Their Importance: Cassidy being m-spec is important because male m-spec characters are few and far between. Cassidy wasn't introduced explicitly m-spec and was only confirmed to be in early s3. In s2 it was implied that he had sex with another male character. It is unclear whether they planned to have Cassidy be m-spec from the beginning or only did so after fan encouragement. 

Cassidy is shown to be addicted to many different substances from the first episode of the show. It is implied he started taking drugs to numb himself to the boredom that comes with being immortal, and to the loss of his loved ones as they aged and died. Characters with addictions are shown to be rejected or treated as children for their addiction, but Cassidy isn't rejected or infantilised because of his addiction. Joe Gilgun, who plays Cassidy, has also talked about his drug abuse in a number of interviews.

Issues: Throughout the series, there are scenes of graphic drug use, which could make this a difficult show for people in recovery to watch. During s2, on an episode of Talking Preacher, the showrunners acted coy when asked about Cassidy's sexuality and treated it as a joke.  

During the airing of season 3, a male love interest was introduced for Cass. The love interest is an unsavoury character in all respects, but so are most of the characters on Preacher. Additionally, the Preacher social media accounts referred to Cassidy’s relationship with his love interest as a “bromance” despite an onscreen kiss and implied sexual activity between the two. Cassidy himself refers to the relationship as simply a friendship. Also, the love interest meets a grizzly end by the end of the season. 

The Preacher comic books are far more homophobic, racist, etc than the show, and Cassidy is shown to drug and rape another character, although the show seems to be omitting that storyline. The show touches on heavy topics, such as abuse, and has graphic scenes of violence and gore. It should be watched with care.
