It's called ignorance. As many other typical students of american colleges of 80s and 90s, Konietzko and Di Martino disrespected those movies and series, Animated and not only that, about Romance and Love Stories, cause they were so "old" and "superficial", and Indeed their favourite anime show is Neon Genesis Evangelion, when there aren't love stories (or they are twisted, tragical and between adult people without hope or other things). So, they never knew how a romantic scene is built, and their writers and directors worked with their sources.

You know, I'm a KatAang fan, but I understand why many people loved Zutara, cause many scenes with Katara and Zuko, Well, they were typicals of some love stories and similar. So, Konietzko and Di Martino can Say nothing about It, cause the scenes worked in that meaning, proof that they worked badly. And they never developmented the romances that they wanted, cause they never knew how It works, just like they never knew how to build an End or how working a plot without plot holes!

Maybe, a Better knowledge about Classical Movies, Litetature, Animation and Comics of all culture and genres, not Just Sci-Fi, and maybe the simple acceptance that their show was changed and they couldn't work continuing to want a Sci-Fi that didn't exist, could help them.

But they couldn't. Their hybris was their fault. And they never understood their limitations and flaws.

The creators be like: let's add as many cinematographic techniques to make this scene as romantic as possible
