Okay I just have thoughts. I don’t know what these thoughts are, but they’re there.

Zhang Linghe as Gong Ziyu, especially in the beginning, was everything I’ve never seen him as — soft, almost delicate. How he was shot and framed in those early episodes still makes me feral (tbh everything about this show makes me feral and that’s the cinematography whore in me)

And then even after he starts maturing and levelling up! There’s still this sense of gentleness in the way he is visualised and portrayed. Guh. Love it.

But then contrast him as Qi Xiao Xuan

He’s dressed is lighter colours as compared to Gong Ziyu and he’s definitely more “in the light” but how he is shot and framed is much more masculine? In the essence that he feels more “aggressive”? If that makes any sense.

I’m still in the earlier episodes of Tiger and Crane but I’m having a bit of whiplash with how he is on this show as compared to MJTY. It’s fascinating.

I’ve been keeping an eye on him since his debut on Maiden Holmes (and wow has it just been three years since he debut? Bruh is doing good!) and to see him get more roles and gain more prominence makes me very happy. I don’t know, just feel like it would be nice to see him in more roles that see him in a softer way? I think it’d also be great to see him team up with Jin Jing again? But I think that’s just me haha

if you can ignore the fact that this photo of shen yi and du cheng gives off massive "bring your son to work day" vibes, i can tell you something interesting about their rank in the renmin jingcha, 人民警察, the people's police—because in fic we're always like "captain this" and "officer that," and of course none of these words are quite right.

officer shen is 二级警司, superintendent second class. not sure what exactly he superintends. xiaoxuan, i guess. did he come in at this rank, or work long enough somewhere else before beijiang branch to get promoted? there's a fanfiction gap here, people.

cheng-dui is supervisor first class, or 一级警督. presumably he does supervise, at least he seems to be in a managerial position at the precinct, because he gets to hold the whiteboard marker and bark orders at everyone else. probably he has to sign off on all their timesheets every friday. and order the birthday cakes.

meanwhile zhang-ju, in addition to being bureau chief, is a commissioner third class, or 三级警监, only one rank above du cheng. she still yells at him like she's the general secretary of the ccp tho. for more fascinating people's police facts, you can…consult the wikipedia article, because i barely know bupkis. s2 any day now!
