𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ MARK as Then Because She Goes.

The song is specifically a dreamy, romantic anthem for someone who wants to confess their love. The rhythm and the lyrics perfectly symbolizes Mark as someone who is in love with music. His feelings are so strong and complex that he finds it easier to fill a paper with his thougths and then write a song about it. He would definately do this, if he feels overwhelmed about his thougths inside his head.

For Mark I would also say She's American and Oh Caroline.

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ RENJUN as Fallingforyou.

The song is about a person falling for someone, sharing the persepective of beautiful, harmonic feelings. I think when Renjun loves someone, the happening itself has a soft atmosphere around it, giving the person all he has just to love his partner truthfully and wholely. Renjun would take a moment when he realizes he had fallen in love, soaking in his feelings about his partner and wondering what beautiful things he can do with his other half.

For Renjun I would also say So Far.

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ JENO as Somebody Else.

Somebody else lyrically deals with the after-effects of a breakup, and overswing over the idea of the former lover’s new relationship. The song describes being caught between the various emotional phases one experiences after the end of a relationship. Jeno loves dearly, his feelings strong towards someone he loves. He has a hard time letting go his partner, acceptting they had found a new person to call home.Despite the jealousy, deep inside he would feel solace of seeing that his former lover is not lonely.

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ HAECHAN as Be My Mistake.

The song mainly focuses on an insignificant hookup during a relationship, or even after one. This reflects on being young and careless, not knowing what we want in real life. Haechan appears to be a bold person, his personality eager with experiences and wants. Haechan being a young free mind, could often get him into not thinking through things, feeling the aftermath of the mistakes he had done. But mistakes often wake people up to realize what they already have. He could make mistakes in life, but in the end, he is that kind of person who appreaciates what he already has.

For Haechan I would also say The Sound and Oh Caroline.

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ JAEMIN as About You.

About you is strongly based on the sensations when you are deeply in love. Jaemin's feelings for someone is treasured, his memories documented often in pictures as being a photographer. But as the song tells, the singer describes how he still remembers why he loves his partner. Jaemin would be like this too, going through hardship in a relationship but nevertheless stating the obvious, he is in love. Even if life would get in a way, he wouldn't forget his partner, and why he loves them. Rectracing situations and memories of what made him happy, the things he misses in life.

For Jaemin I would also say All I Need To Hear or You.

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ CHENLE as A Change Of Heart and Robbers.

For Chenle I chose two songs. A Change of heart shows the reality about falling out of love, along with Robbers, which shows the toxicity side and how destructive it can be. I think Chenle as being an idol would be too distracting for him to really pay attention to a relationship. Doesn't matter how much he doesn't want to admit, it robs him and his partner from actually having the feeling of love towards each other,realizing that they have much more to experience in life.

𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ JISUNG as Me & You Together Song.

The song is tender, an act of being young and in love. Jisung being the naive and youngster he is, he would fall in love with the idea of being in a domestric bliss with his partner. The song features the dreams and fantasies one has to another, the feelings not reciprocated. I think Jisung has suffered in this in the past, or will in the future. I think the upbeat rythm fits Jisung, the 1990s and early 2000s vibe naturally drawn to him. The song has a nostalgic feeling to it, and I think this song is what it would be like remembering back to Jisung after a breakup.

*Ellie's POV* When I woke up, Matt's side of the bed felt cold and empty. Maybe he was already awake, but it was so quiet you could've heard a pin drop. I shot out of bed and looked around my apartment but he was actually gone. He didn’t leave a single trace of himself here. My body fell onto my couch as the silence drowned me, this hurt more than I expected. I fought tears as I went back into my room to grab my phone and saw I had a text from him.

I’m sorry I left this morning and didn’t wake you. I don’t think I could handle saying goodbye to you again. I still want to be your friend, but I need some time. Take care of yourself, Matthews.

I sadly smiled as I re-read his text. He probably wanted to be left alone so I deleted the paragraph I wrote. I checked my other texts and saw I had one from Noah. Seeing his name on my phone again was giving me some serious deja vu.

I’ll be landing around 6 tonight if that’s okay? Of course…do you want me to pick you up?

No I’ll get an Uber… I saw the 1975 are in town tonight so I got us tickets. Show starts at 8 so be ready when I get there :) Trying to schmooze me already? … is it working? I’m not admitting anything, Sebastian. I’ll take that as a yes ;)

I rolled my eyes, he hasn’t changed a bit when it came to pursing me. I looked at the clock and it was 10:30…did I really sleep in that late? While I waited for Noah to get here I decided to deep clean my house and change my bedding since it hadn’t been done in a couple weeks. I threw my headphones on and put Bad Omens entire discography on shuffle while I cleaned. The entire time I hummed along to the lyrics…I had to smile, I missed their music so much. Depriving myself of their music was torture.

The clock read 3:30 by the time I was done so I headed into my bathroom to shower and get ready. My head still couldn’t wrap around the idea of Noah being here in a matter of hours, it felt surreal. I was worried it would be awkward since we haven’t spent more than five minutes alone together in a year. At least we were doing something tonight that would take the tension off of us for a while.

I got out of the shower and did my usual going out make up: a classic black wing and red lipstick. After I blow dried my hair I threw it into some rollers to give it volume. The carpet in my closet almost had a hole in it as I paced around deciding what to wear. The 1975 always reminded me of my early twenties where tumblr was all the rage so I grabbed a simple little black dress and paired it with an oversized denim jacket and black high top converse. 

How as it only 5:30? Shit this was dragging. I poured myself a glass of wine while I waited for Noah to get here to help ease my nerves. I blasted The 1975 to pump myself up, getting me really excited for the concert. I had been so wrapped up in work and my life that I forgot they were coming to town.  

Just getting out of the Uber, how do I get up? 

Buzz 1634, it’s also my apartment number :) 

My heart started to thunder in my chest as I waited for him to get here. My hands were also shaking and becoming clammy as I polished off my glass of wine. I ran to my deck and opened the door to get some fresh air, taking deep breaths until I heard a knock on the door. 

He’s here. 

My footsteps felt heavy and slow as I walked to the door. Fallingforyou started to play in the background, how fitting. My breath hitched as I unlocked the door and was met with Noah’s beautiful face. Fuck I missed this and him.

“Wow...” he stopped and looked me up and down. I watched his every move until our eyes met, causing a pulse between my hips. 

“Thanks for the compliment.” I joked to lighten the tension. I moved out of the way and he walked past me with his luggage. “How was your flight?”

“Quick.” He replied, his eyes scanning my apartment this time. I guess this was his first time here. “Folio was right, your apartment is fucking sick.”

“Thank you.” I swallowed. “Make yourself at home.”

“Do you mind if I shower and get ready?” 

“Not at all. You can use the bathroom in my room or if you’re okay with bath toys you can use the guest bathroom.” I suggested as I pointed down the hall. I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate for me to suggest mine but he was so tall I thought it would be a better option. 

“I’ll use yours.” He says, licking his lips. I shifted my weight to my other foot as I watched him walk towards my bedroom. Fuck he was making me so nervous. He turned around and gave me a final look before closing the door.

Tonight was gonna be interesting.

In the speech Matty did for the award show he went to recently he said that the music industry is a place where pimps, and thieves run free, and it made me think of the Robbers music video. In the music video they are thieves robbing a store, but also in the movie, true romance, that robbers is based on the whole plot is that the main character has to save a prostitute from her pimp. This also makes me think of the colored music video for sex where at the end after all their fun and shenanigans the girl gets arrested and is taken away, could this all be connected back to the fact that Taylor got signed to a record label much sooner than the band did, so she was technically “arrested”, something that the boys have stated many times they couldn’t get. Could this be why Taylor could no longer party or hangout with the boys if they ever did. Also in that music video the boy looks up at a Christmas tree and laughs and I always thought that was weird, which i know could just be him laughing at the irony of it being hot and Christmas where they are, but that also places the music video in the time of Christmas which reminds me of When We are Together when he says “Our first kiss was Christmas in the Walmart toy department”, and the fact that Taylor grew up on a Christmas tree farm. Another part of this is that the boy and the girl in the music video are both wearing homemade necklaces made of chord, one of which has a key on it (this connects to a vault track off of Red called “Run”), and recently matty has been wearing a long necklace that is made of chord and he keeps it hidden under his shirt and I haven’t seen a necklace like that anywhere but in that music video. I think that the thing that Matty and Taylor are trying to do is much more that just expose they’re relationship, I think that they have been trying to free Taylor from the music industry for a long time and that could have been their plan all along, I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Wow! Thanks for your analysis of all of this! That was a joy to read! I really loved the part about comparing the girl getting arrested to getting signed earlier. That's super interesting to me! Especially when we follow the thread of "thieves" to the 'I Can See You' music video, where we see a thief (all dressed in black) on a mission to break Taylor out of a vault. This thief has to pass through a neon box in order to reach her…

By the way - 'I Can See You' is just littered with Matty/The 1975 imagery, in my opinion - I made a little video to highlight what I mean, it also seems to parallel Fallingforyou, amongst others...

But, yes! The inexplicable Christmas Tree! That immediately reminded me of Taylor, too. Also interesting that The 1975 should choose an American actress/setting for the plot of this video. When "Slut!" first came out, it reminded me of this plotline, so I made a little fan video matching the scenes up with the lyrics:

It also reminded me of a female answer to the song 'Sex', right? Here you have the guy all torn up over this girl who is almost squandering their chemistry. In "Slut!" it's almost like we get our answer. She's suffering just as much as he is, but she's the one with the "boyfriend, anyway", and she'll have to endure the insults or the "reputation", not him - but that it might be worth it for once… Now might be a good time to remind that the original version of 'Sex' also included this lyric: "Gonna fuck me anyday", (as can be heard in the 2009 video of Matty busking the song with George!)

Speaking of 'Robbers', did you know Dakata Battcher (the lead guy in the 'Sex' music video) was supposed to play the lead in the 'Robbers' music video, as well? Matty ultimately took over the role. But that begs the question… is 'Robbers' possibly a continuation of 'Sex'?

And if we're gonna talk about 'Robbers', we might as well talk about its "sister video", 'I Knew You Were Trouble'! Because, well, we've got yet another connection not just to 'Red', but keys on chains:

Also, that shirt… it looks familiar! A lot like this one Taylor wore on her trip to London in 2009, as seen in her video entitled, "Whisper hello, I miss you quite terribly.":

But back to 'I Knew You Were Trouble'… did you know Taylor premiered the song as a single on October 8th, 2012, a song notable for lyrics:

"And the saddest fear comes creeping in, that you never loved me, or her, or anyone, or anything"

A few days later, on October 13th, 2012, Matty would tweet this cryptic message:

"listen darlin. i do love you. so terribly much"

Young Matty also shares a similar style to the romantic lead in IKYWT, plus he was a rave kid (he talked about it in his interview with Zane Lowe):

Of course, electronic music is a huge part of the rave scene, so it's interesting that Taylor became one of the first mainstream artists to incorporate dubstep into pop music with 'I Knew You Were Trouble'. Interestingly… the friendship bracelets Taylor's fans now trade at all the Eras shows? Also a long-established tradition in rave culture! (Greater YOYOK implications, perhaps?) And of course, here's the desert rave depicted in the IKYWT music video:

Anyway, I get it, it's all just a series of coincidences. So here's another fun one - Taylor wrote This Love a few days after Matty's cryptic tweet, on October 17th, 2012 - a song whose motif may or may not be purposefully threaded into the lyrics of the following songs:

As per your last point, that's exactly the same conclusion that I came to, as well! I don't want to get too into that theory right now (or maybe ever lol), but what I will say is… well, I'll actually just link you to one of my old tweets because you'll see exactly why I don't want to re-type what it says given the very unfortunate (and unrelated) series of very current events.

My third eye just opened: I was rereading some interviews from the beginning of bfiafl era and in one of them Matty said that he wrote about you with drive like I do in mind and he said that the song has that same whimsy and naïveté of a dlid song. And I realised that yes, he did say that to him it felt like a continuation of robbers, THE dlid song, but that same naïveté could be found in fallingforyou, which is not a dlid song, but since it was one of their first songs as the 1975 it was probably written in that transition period of dlid-1975 and now I find that quite emotional. What I mean is that I feel like robbers-fallingforyou-about you tell a story of naïveté (sorry for repeating this word a third time) and first love that I find particularly endearing. I added fallingforyou to the mix, I know that Matty never said that three songs are connected, but what he said about thinking about dlid when writing about you made me think about how fallingforyou is the most naïve song of theirs (sex comes as a close second tho, and again it’s a dlid song)

Yeah I get what you mean. I think a lot about lyrics like “my bike and your enormous house” and “when I’m closer to your height.” Etc. I feel like a lot of ST has undertones of youthful romanticism. Which sort of makes a comeback on BFIAFL. I think maybe the boys can’t help themselves it’s part of their aesthetic. Like matty says, the 1975 does love a bit of drama.

Iwaizumi is in a predicament.

When a bored Oikawa called him to ask if he wanted to go see a movie this afternoon, he agreed. When Oikawa had asked if it was alright if he invited some other people, Iwaizumi agreed to this as well and assumed that it would just be Hanamaki and Matsukawa.

What Oikawa had failed to mention is that, in addition to inviting his teammates, he had also invited you. 

And this is how Iwaizumi ended up sitting beside you in the dark theater.

See, over the course of your three years at Aoba Johsai, you managed to become friends with the third-years on the school’s volleyball team. But, lately, the way Iwaizumi looked at you started to change. 

A few weeks ago, on a random Monday, the ace thought you looked particularly cute. Immediately, Iwaizumi commenced panicking over the fact that he thought you, his friend, were cute. This led to a downward spiral and Iwaizumi eventually came to the conclusion that he had developed a crush on you. And this realization resulted in him acting bashfully whenever you are in the vicinity, which Oikawa has unfortunately picked up on. 

As he sits shoulder-to-shoulder with you, he cannot help, but glance over at you every few minutes and each time he sees how entranced you are by the film. Your eyebrows are scrunched together, and your soft-looking lips are slightly parted. Iwaizumi begins to wonder how your lips would feel against his. How it would feel like to leave a trail of kisses across your jaw down to your neck…

As soon as this thought enters his head, Iwaizumi can sense his face growing red and he is grateful that the room’s dim lighting would prevent you from noticing this if you happened to look over at him. 

After the movie finishes, you all head outside and the sun is shining brightly, a stark contrast to where you have all been sitting for the past two hours.

“Hey, a new cafe opened up a few streets over,” you remark as your group loiters at the entrance of the cinema. “Do you guys want to check it out?”

“Sorry, I can’t. I have plans,” Oikawa responds without hesitation as his eyes briefly flicker between you and Iwaizumi.

“I thought you didn’t have any plans for today?” you point out with a narrowed look.

“Well…” Oikawa trails off, seemingly at a loss for words. Then he suddenly snaps his fingers and proclaims, “It turns out that my sister needs someone to babysit Takeru in like an hour, so I volunteered.”

You shrug at the captain’s excuse before turning to face the others. “Are the rest of you free?”

“Actually, Matsu and Makki are helping me babysit,” Oikawa blurts out, throwing his arms over the shoulders of his fellow third-years.

“All three of you are babysitting one kid?” Iwaizumi inquires, his knowing glare directed at his childhood friend. 

“Yes?” Makki says, but his response sounds more like a question than a definitive answer. 

“Kids…”  Matsukawa chimes in, though he looks somewhat confused. “Just one can be a handful.”

“I know that Iwaizumi doesn’t have any plans, Y/N. Why don’t you go together?!

You cast your gaze over at the wing spiker and quirk an eyebrow at him, as if silently asking if he is fine with this.

“Y-yeah, I’m free to go with you, Y/N,” Iwaizumi affirms, trying to come off as calm and collected as possible. It seems like forever since he last hung out with you one-on-one, and the prospect of spending some alone time with you excites him. 

“Alright! You two have fun on your date!” Oikawa loudly exclaims with a roguish smirk. Before Iwaizumi can chastise the setter for his comment, he quickly scurries away, while simultaneously dragging Hanamaki and Matsukawa with him.

Iwaizumi watches the receding figures of his so-called friends, and he cannot believe they would do this to him. Well, that’s not true. A plot like this is obviously something Oikawa would scheme. And Makki and Matsu occasionally enjoy witnessing Iwa lose his cool. But this doesn’t prevent Iwaizumi from feeling betrayed right now.

How can they call this a date in front of you and then ditch him? Don’t they understand how awkward they’ve made this moment for him?

Fortunately, your light laughter pulls Iwaizumi back to reality and he gawks at your reaction.

“So, are you ready for our date?” you say with a playful gleam in your eye, which causes his heart rate to rapidly increase. 

Your friend doesn’t know how to reply to this, so he ends up shyly answering your question with a question, “Is it a date?”

“Do you want it to be a date?”

Iwaizumi can assert with certainty that he wasn’t expecting the words coming out of your mouth to be accompanied by a scarlet blush and it gives him a glimmer of hope. He has been so scared to confess to you these past few weeks, but it seems that perhaps his feelings for you are reciprocated. 

Therefore, despite still being a little nervous about doing so, he finds the courage to firmly state: “Yes.”

you really don’t mean to develop a crush or to become infatuated. as almost eveything in college does, it simply just happened. 

the universe decided its course and dragged you into this mess but you can’t really complain because now you’re at a the 1975 concert with your best friend.

“jaemin, i’m doing to pass out blessed tonight,” you laugh over the loud beats of the drums and the strum of the bass. 

the concert is messy and chaotic, but a dream all at once. it’s much too crowded in here and the girl next to you keeps ramping her elbow in your arm as she tries to film the band with her ridiculously low quality phone camera.

he can’t hear you over the music and his eyes are fixated on the band before you two.

still, the moment takes your breath away and you can’t help but feel your heart beat in time with the music. is the thundering in your chest coming from the song or from your heartbeats?

he turns to you because it’s your song—correction, your song with jaemin. it’s song that brought you together for the first time as you just so happened to find that someone that loved the 1975 just as much as you did when he accidentally blasted somebody else in the middle of a multivariable calculus lecture because he didn’t realize his airpods had run out of battery already.

his lips curve into that attractive smile that you know so well (and maybe have already permanently etched in your long term memory).

fuck. you really thought you couldn’t possibly be more screwed, but somehow, he makes your feelings intensify with a single look.

he’s in the music you listen to while studying for multivariable calculus and in the fond memories of laughter on your couch when you force him to watch another season of superstore and he willingly complies because you asked him to.

the moonlight gently filters into the car through the windows. there’s a faint glow on his face and you’ve been wearing this ridiculously stupid smile on your face for the entire time.

you knit your brows together before shaking your head. “no, we can’t forget the song that earned you the most embarrassment in class and brought us together.” your tone is teasing as you recall the fond memory.

(the tips of his ears were burning red with embarrassment after he struggled to mute his laptop while everyone in the lecture hall were shooting him stares. unknown to you at the time but jaemin was never good at being shameless in class despite coming across as shameless to all his friends outside of lectures.

“to be honest, you chose the best song to play. somebody else is my all-time favourite song by the 1975. i mean, if you’re going to rebel in class, you might as well do it in style right?” you speak while packing up the rest of your stationary so you can go to your next class.

“yeah, if only the professor could have the same good taste.”

you emit a laugh and then he grins at you. you swear, you would have never thought the boy who sits next to you in lectures would ever end up being this cute to you.)

I'm in love with you is the most IN YOUR FACE love song, but could it be argued that this could simply be a case of lovebombing in some scenarios? (I'M NOT SAYING MATTY IS A LOVE-BOMBER! I mean purely from a lyrical perspective 🤗) i think personally that more subtle songs in their discography like All I need to hear (more subtle in the way that they're not repeatedly saying "hey but guess what? I love you. Did I tell you that I love you yet? Hey-" etc haha) or Fallingforyou or even Heart out could be considered more romantic? And then obviously you have the addiction-esque songs like It's not living or...medicine (I'm praying I'm correct haha) where they *can* be applied to relationships BUT what does that say foelr the relationship itself? Is the relationship healthy, or is it an illusion, toxic, where the people involved are only viewing the positive sides of the relationship and pretending the bad sides don't exist, therefore creating an addictive habitat for this toxic mirage of love to like...fester and slowly get worse and worse and more addictive? Anyway I'm rambling sorry I'll shut up I've thought about this a lot in the past and I'm also like slightly tipsy i think so this might not even make sense 😅

No I think you’re absolutely right. I mean there is a reason that matty returns to this metaphor of love as addiction/ addiction as love. And it’s an interesting trope in romantic writing in general but the way that the 1975 almost turn it into a pop song clearly works right. To the point where nobody even notices it’s not a love song hahaha.

I think maybe About You is their most romantic? I have a soft spot for WWAT. Sure it’s clever and ironic at the end with the whole “gaslighting” thing but that almost makes it better cuz it’s more realistic. Cuz relationships in real life are kinda petty and argumentative. And I imagine if you date matty you gotta get used to the whole getting canceled thing hahahha. But as many of my mutuals have argued, and as matty tends to say onstage, that song may be applies more to his friendships. So maybe my final choice would be About You? Weird.
