Winter Solstice Author Edition out now!
Welp, I did another thing. 🙂 Winter Solstice was my second book, published in 2011 by Lyrical Press, now part of Kensington Press. It was a fun story to write and I was thrilled to have two books published by Lyrical Press, but Winter Solstice, unlike Secrets of the Lotus, was never published as a paperback. So I’ve never had it at my store, so it really feels new! I was super hesitant to…

REVIEW
Warrior’s Hope by Rebecca Zanetti
Dark Protectors #16
Growing up knowing you are the key to a prophecy and that your choices impact an entire realm – or more – making decisions about what direction to take and what man to choose is a big choice to make. Hope’s story and who she ends up with has been awaited through the reading of several books. She has spent time with Libby, Paxton, and dream-time with Drake of the Kurjan Nation. She feels her “time” has arrived and is ready to take that final step to keep her realm safe, believes she knows what that step is, and then…wonders if she is right or got things wrong.
I was looking forward to finding out how this segment of the story and the prophecy was handled and did find out although I had a bit of letdown. I am not sure if it was Hope being so “young” and seeming rather immature or that one character became even darker than he had leaned previously, or something else. I had a feeling, after the last book, that I knew which man Hope would end up with but still wanted to find out for sure.
This book provides the answer of which man, Drake or Paxton, Hope will be mated to, gives a hint of the work she and her mate will face in the future, if there are more books that they show up in. And my guess is that there will be more books as there were plenty of loose ends left to tie up if the author chooses to stay with this series. What loose ends? Well, enhanced women have a blood issue, the Kurjan Nation has a lot of repair work to be done by their new king and queen, and there are issues I wonder about like the Seven and what they will do now…and then all of the OTHER realms and beings and such.
The author mentioned 21 books written in this world though this is book 16 in the Dark Protectors Series. The books don’t have to be read in order but this book would benefit from knowing the backstory of Hope, Paxton, and Drake.
Did I enjoy this book? Not as much as I thought I would
Will I read more by this author? If the synopsis appeals – yes
Rating: 3 overall
Enjoyment: 2-3
5 because it needed to be written
Averaged to: 3
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Lyrical Press for the ARC – this is my honest review.
BLURB
An explosive love triangle comes to its passionate conclusion and decides the fate of battling nations in award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors . . . As the only female vampire ever born, and the heir to two powerful immortal families, Hope Kayrs-Kyllwood has always felt the weight of fate and destiny. Now her heart is torn between two men and two different futures. It’s a choice between duty and love, peace and war, with the fate of everyone she loves hanging in the balance. As the leader of the Kurjan nation, Drake has always known that mating Hope is the best path to avoiding war. He’s counting on her to know the same. . . . Paxton has been Hope’s best friend and protector since they were children. He would kill and die for her without a second thought. In fact, he’s always known that would be his path . . . With deadly factions at her heels, Hope must decide whom to trust and where her loyalty lies—before the choice is taken away from her . . .

It's Fine Press Friday!
A Classic Representation
The Greek Portrait is an anthology of English verse translations of eminent Greek poets, from Homer to Meleager, with the corresponding Greek text presented alongside. Numerous translators provided the translations, taking on the arduous task of translating essential works from the Classical Period, including epic, lyric, and dramatic poetry.
This 1934 edition was designed by British fine-press publisher Francis Meynell (1891-1975) and printed in an edition of 425 copies by Dutch book and type designer Jan van Krimpen (1892-1958) at the Press of Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem for Meynell's Nonesuch Press in London. The text was edited by English poet and critic George Rostrevor Hamilton (1888-1967) and printed on Pannekoek paper in Fleischman Greek and van Krimpen's Lutetia types.
The illustrations are by Mariette Lydis (1887-1970), an Austrian-Argentine painter known for her portraits, illustrations, and erotic engravings. She was a self-taught artist who began her career at a young age and had a history of creating what was considered controversial artwork during her lifetime. She gained recognition for creating lithographic depictions that celebrated lesbian and bisexual relationships. However, some critics of her work described the illustrations as "perverse.” We find these prints to be quite lovely, however.

"Everybody's On the Run":
You can't fight the feeling And all is the same And the pouring rain, y'know, y'know Is coming out of the ceiling Falling from above Falling in and out of love A broken heart is still beating In and out of time Hold your body next to mine, y'know, y'know But you can't stop the bleeding Sing to yourself and hold on 'Cause everybody's on the run Everybody's on the run [Chorus] You've been drifting and stealing Trying to walk in my shoes But they don't belong to you, you know they don't But you can't find the meaning Sing to yourself and hold on 'Cause everybody's on the run Everybody's on the run

"(Stranded On) The Wrong Beach":
Falling, I see you on the way down I'll meet you on the rebound Or somewhere in between Calling out across the airwaves Faces that you can't save Are calling out for me And oh me, oh my! Say so long, baby, bye-bye Pour me one for the road It's a long journey, baby Where it's going to take me Just depends on the weight of my load, oh no Depends on the weight of my load Sail on, I'll see you in the next one 'Cause everybody's been and gone There's no one here but me [Chorus repeats] Dry land sinking in the quicksand Stranded on the wrong beach Come and rescue me

Typography Tuesday
This week we present some type and wood-engraved initials from an edition of Alfred Lord Tennyson's Lyric Poems by the Vale Press, printed in London at the Ballantyne Press in an edition of 320 copies in 1900. British artist, illustrator, printer, and book and type designer Charles Ricketts (1866-1931) founded the Vale Press in 1896 and designed three typefaces for the press. The most commonly used typeface was Vale Type, which is used here. Ricketts also used over 100 ornamental initials which he designed and engraved, several of which are shown here. To make the initials, Ricketts would draw the designs in ink, and then would paste a number of designs onto a single sheet. These were then photographed onto a woodblock, engraved by Ricketts, and finally separated when they were electrotyped.
The Art Nouveau-style border design in the first image was designed by Ricketts and engraved in wood by Charles Edward Keats, who began working for Ricketts in 1899. As Ricketts did not own the requisite printing equipment for his enterprise, he established a relationship with the venerable Edinburgh-founded Ballantyne Press, and this edition was printed by Charles John Holmes, who worked for Ballantyne and became the manager for Vale.
This copy of Lyric Poems is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff.
