Evacuation Day
On November 25th, 1783, the last of the British troops who served during the American Revolution left Manhattan island. Manhattan, and the rest of the boroughs during this time were under heavy British control due to their strategic location during the war (they split the colonies in half).
This led to the legendary American flag raising. Pretty much the British made a flag pole with the British flag on it very difficult to climb, eventually a young sailor took it down. According to the story, Washington & his troops came along where a feast was held at fraunces tavern where they had 13 toasts.
Anyways, evacuation day for many years was equally as important as the Fourth of July. It stopped being celebrated as fervently during the 20th century, and currently there are efforts for it to make a come back.
