A Daughter of Towers
Tumblr media
Summary: A lot of things at once for poor little Lyanna.
Warnings: N/A !
PART 4 OMG!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the whispers of Lyanna’s marriage began to swirl around the court, the days following the tense meeting in Alicent’s chambers felt heavy with unspoken concerns. Despite the protests of her brothers, Alicent continued to press the matter in private, meeting with Lord Otto Hightower to discuss potential matches, while keeping Lyanna largely unaware of the conversations happening around her. Though she was young, the weight of her family’s expectations hung over her like a storm cloud, something she could feel, even if no one had yet spoken directly to her about the path they wished her to take.
Lyanna, however, was no stranger to the concept of duty. She had been raised in a court where power, marriage, and alliances were as valuable as gold. She watched her brothers and her sister play their roles, each navigating the labyrinth of court politics in their own way. Yet, as much as she loved her family, she also felt a growing sense of unease about her future.
Her bond with Stormfyre, her dragon, only grew stronger with time. By now, the once tempestuous young dragon had become more formidable, its massive wings casting long shadows across the fields as it soared above the Red Keep. Riding Stormfyre had become her refuge, a way to escape the suffocating air of the court. High in the sky, with the wind in her hair and the ground far below, she could never forget, even if for a moment, that she was a Targaryen, a daughter of duty and blood.
At fifteen, Lyanna had blossomed into a striking young woman, her silver hair cascading down her back, her violet eyes sharp with intelligence. She had learned much from her family—Aemond had trained her in swordsmanship, Helaena had taught her to look beyond the surface of things, and Aegon, despite his vices, had shown her how to move through the court without being swallowed by it. But despite her growing knowledge and skill, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the choices she wanted to make might not be her own.
One afternoon, as she sat with her sister in the gardens, braiding Helaena’s hair while listening to her soft murmurs about her insect collection, a quiet unease began to stir inside her. Helaena, always perceptive in her own way, noticed.
“You’re worried about something,” Helaena said, her voice as soft as the breeze that rustled through the trees.
Lyanna hesitated. “There are rumors. About a match for me. Mother hasn’t said anything directly, but I hear whispers in the hallways.”
Helaena’s fingers danced delicately over a small caterpillar as she glanced at Lyanna, her voice a soft whisper, barely louder than the wind through the garden.
“The men of this kingdom see you as a prize to be won,” she murmured, her eyes flickering with a faraway look, “but you are born of fire and blood. A choice awaits you, Lya. If you wish to prove you are more than a broodmare… you must decide which flame to ignite.”
Her words lingered, heavy with meaning, before she drifted back into her quiet world, leaving Lyanna to unravel their significance.
“I know, Hela...” Lyanna sighed, her voice tinged with frustration.
Their conversation was interrupted by a page, summoning Lyanna to the council chamber. As she rose to leave, Helaena caught her hand, squeezing it gently. “Don’t let them decide for you. You’re stronger than they think.”
Later that day, Lyanna found herself walking the halls of the Red Keep, her heart pounding in her chest. She had always known that one day she would be married off—such was the fate of highborn women in Westeros—but the thought of being wed to someone like a Lannister, far from the lands she loved, filled her with dread. Her brothers had always promised they would protect her, but even they couldn't hold off the inevitable forever.
When she entered the council chamber, she found her mother waiting for her. Alicent stood by the window, looking out over the city. Her expression was unreadable, but there was a tension in her posture that Lyanna recognized all too well.
“Mother,” Lyanna greeted her, stepping forward cautiously.
Alicent turned, offering her daughter a small, tight smile. “Sweetheart, I’ve been meaning to speak with you.”
The conversation that followed was laced with formality and the undertone of duty. Alicent spoke of the importance of alliances, the necessity of securing their family’s future in uncertain times. She mentioned the Lannisters again, a subtle suggestion of a possible match that would benefit House Targaryen in both wealth and power. Lyanna listened, her face impassive, but inside she felt a growing sense of frustration.
“I know my duty, Mother,” Lyanna said finally, her voice steady. “But I also know that I am not just a pawn to be traded for gold.”
Alicent’s eyes narrowed slightly. “It is not just gold, Lyanna. It is power. The power to protect this family, to protect Aemond and Helaena.”
“And what of my protection?” Lyanna asked quietly, her hands clenched at her sides. “Do I not have a say in my own future?”
For a moment, Alicent was silent, her expression softening. She stepped closer, reaching out to touch Lyanna’s face gently. “I want what’s best for you, Lya. But sometimes, what’s best for the family must come first.”
Lyanna nodded, though her heart ached. She understood her mother’s position, but it didn’t make the prospect any easier to swallow.
That evening, as she sat in her chambers, lost in thought, her brothers came to visit her. Aegon, already tipsy from the day’s feasting, sprawled across a chair while Aemond stood near the window, his ever-watchful gaze fixed on his sister. The moment they arrived, Lyanna knew they had heard about the conversation with Alicent.
“Sooo,” Aegon drawled, his voice slurring slightly, “Mother’s still pushing for the Lannister match, isn’t she?”
Lyanna nodded, her expression weary. “She thinks it’s what’s best for the family.”
Aemond’s face darkened, his one good eye flashing with anger. “It’s not what’s best for you. The Lannisters are only after the prestige of having a Targaryen bride. They don’t care about you.”
Aegon snorted, raising his goblet. “Of course they don’t. Lions always go for the prize that shines the brightest.”
Lyanna looked between her brothers, feeling a surge of gratitude for their protectiveness. They had always been there for her, even when they disagreed on everything else. Aegon, despite his faults, would never let anyone hurt her. And Aemond… Aemond, who had always taken his role as her protector more seriously than anyone, would rather see the world burn than let her be forced into a marriage she didn’t want.
“I don’t want to marry a Lannister,” she admitted softly. “But I also don’t want to disappoint Mother.”
Aegon rolled his eyes. “Mother will survive. And so will the family, whether you marry a lion or not.”

The dark colour of the crown prince’s armour seemed to both absorb and reflect the sunlight.
Arthur stood in silence after Rhaegar marched up the winding stairs to reunite with the Lady Lyanna. Many minutes passed, and he sat waiting outside the tower with Ser Oswell, half-listening to the prince's muffled conversation while the other knight sharpened his sword in silence with a whetstone. Lord Commander Gerold practiced his swings with deadly grace, whirling and parrying imaginary foes.
The Dornish sun was treacherous. He wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, glancing down at milkglass-bladed Dawn resting in resplendence at his hip. A part of him wanted to use it, to cut down the Usurper and defend his prince to the death if needed, but Rhaegar forbade it, assigning him here.
He must see the plan through. He must.
Arthur tapped at his armoured leg with his fingertips, awaiting news of the war. Ravens came to the tower of joy oft enough, he supposed, but information of the usurper’s rebellion was not as detailed as the Dayne would have liked. Whatever knowledge came through, though, Rhaegar made sure that Lyanna knew much and more. He always made sure to ease any worry she had.
It had been longer than Arthur expected when he finally saw the familiar black armour and ruby-crusted dragon sigil pause in front of him. He craned his head, purple staring into an even darker shade, and saw the raw determination boiling underneath Rhaegar's gaze. He must have been half-weary, yet his outward disposition was so calm and composed. How much of it was a show?
“Have you heard more, my prince?” Arthur found himself asking.
“My cousin moves on us faster than expected. The time has come for me to meet him and put an end to this nonsense.” Arthur followed him to his black destrier, as dark as his own armour. Rhaegar stared at his helm tied to his horse’s side, running long fingertips over the red-painted dragon heads at the top.
“What would you have me do, Rhaegar?”
“I still need you, Ser Oswell, and Ser Gerold here, dear friend.” Those were not the words he truly wanted to hear, but he must obey the king. “I must go alone to meet our army. I need you to continue guarding Lyanna and the babe.”
“And what did she say?”
Rhaegar smiled. “Only that if I do not return, she would ride off herself and hunt for me.”
“A hard ride with a belly as large as hers, surely.” Ser Arthur had felt the babe himself, the strong kicks shifting her stomach, hitting his palms. She seemed as strong as ever, though, and he found himself growing accustomed to the fiery young she-wolf.
“It’s Lyanna,” the prince laughed, clasping Arthur on the back. “I must listen. If I don’t, I fear she really will do it.”
Arthur gave a bow. “Of course.”
In one swift movement, Rhaegar was atop his horse, donning his helm. Indigo rested on Arthur again as he rose his visor.
“Arthur, my friend,” his iron-toned voice was muffled only slightly, “the babe is close. Should I fail to return before he is born, head to King’s Landing with Lya. Bring her home to me.”
You will return here. Arthur decided not to tempt fate, and bowed again. “Your wish is my will, my prince.”
The corners of Rhaegar’s eyes crinkled before he stared forward and rode off, kicking up sand and dust in his wake.

Dragon’s Cloak Ch. 7
Ok! Don’t expect this pace moving forward, but I felt like posting this chapter because it makes me happy and was ready (enough). Hope you enjoy!
Moving through the castle without notice felt easier to her than most things that her new life demanded of her. She felt almost free, flitting through the corridors like a shadow. And when she made it through the doors of Maegor’s Holdfast she let out a breath, enjoying the cool air on her skin. She was to meet Brandon at the stables, and they were in her sights. She picked up the pace, grinning at the thought of her rebellion, of getting outside of the gates and getting to be Lyanna again, just for one night.
But just as she crossed the threshold to the stables, she slammed into a familiar, broad and muscled chest.
“Arthur,” she took a step back.
“Lyanna?” Arthur studied her. “Why are you dressed like that?”
“I—“ Lyanna looked down at her clothing and then up behind him where Rhaegar was leaving the stable.
Rhaegar’s face brightened at the sight of her, and then darkened in confusing at her attire. Lyanna flushed with guilt.
“Lyanna,” Rhaegar’s voice was soft. “Are you visiting Flurry again in the middle of the night?”
It was the prefect alibi and Lyanna was about to agree with him when Brandon entered the ring of light, dressed in plain clothing, out of breath.
“Lya,” Brandon panted. “The distraction was easy enough. Jaime is—”
Lyanna threw her brother a dark look, and he looked past her to where Arthur and Rhaegar were standing.
“Your Grace!” Brandon smiled falsely. “Uh, what are you doing in the stables in the middle of the night?”
“I could ask you the same question,” Rhaegar’s eyes were shadowed as he assessed the two siblings. “If I didn’t know any better, I would think you were trying to steal my wife away from the castle.”
“Of course not, Your Grace,” Brandon said. “We were only on a nightly stroll. She told me that the castle has certain charms after dark. The red stones look more like purple.”
Seven hells Brandon should be better liar for all the trouble he got into. The more Brandon spoke, the higher Rhaegar’s eyebrows rose on his forehead, and the lower Lyanna’s heart sank. If she had been caught by one of Aerys’ men, she would be spitting mad. But Rhaegar was her husband. And things were beginning to thaw slightly between them. She didn’t want to lie to him and give him cause to put more distance between them.
“Rhaegar,” she stepped towards him. “We were escaping.”
“I see.” Rhaegar was now completely focused on her, and Lyanna felt embarrassed under the intensity of his gaze.
“But only for a night,” she said, hastily. “I’m not leaving you or leaving my duty, but well, things have been difficult, and I only wanted a night away from the court, where I didn’t need to be a princess anymore.”
“And you were taking her,” Rhaegar said to Brandon.
“It’s not his fault,” Lyanna said. “I practically begged him to take me. He knew it was a bad idea. We both did. I was only feeling desperate. I can be very persuasive. Please don’t blame Brandon.”
“It’s a good thing you ran into me,” Rhaegar crossed his arms over his chest. “So, I could stop you from doing something so irresponsible.”
Lyanna hung her head, dreadfully disappointed that her escape was ruined. Still, Rhaegar looked stern but not wrathful. At least didn’t fear that her husband would hurt her. But she did desperately want to escape the Red Keep.
“If you want to escape for the night, you cannot simply walk out the front gates of the keep. There are escape routes that princes and princess have used since the Red Keep was built.”
Rhaegar stepped forward and tugged her cap affectionately. “Can I show you?” he asked.

Note
I saw a few people already trashing rhaegar in the RHAELYA OFFICIAL ART (I can't believe I can say that after 9 years of being here fighting for my life) and is like MOTHERFUKCER is not enough that you are not able to read between lines to identify that their relationship was willing and consensual that you also are not able to see that the picture is calm but fun, with lyanna being playful jumping from branch to branch, FEELING SAFE IN RHAEGAR'S PRESENCE, and he is observing her from the shadows, representing his careful and aloof nature. Nothing creepy. LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT THE WINTER ROSES flourishing on Lya's feet. And the weirdwood/heart tree ... It's is said that the remain weirdwood on the south is on the isle of faces 🤔...
Anon, I really feel you 🫂
But let me tell you, this official art is so powerful I still can't believe it's real. I can't stop smiling and being all hyped up about it. Rhaelya antis are being sore losers and having a meltdown now.
First, they especially commissioned Justin Sweet to draw it. He had to make time in his busy schedule!
Tumblr media
And both Rhaegar and Lyanna are so carefree in each other's presence. She's “dancing” in front of the heart three, he's sitting on a branch observing her. I think it represents so well both of their personalities. Lyanna is bold and “willful”, Rhaegar has a melancholy to him. This is even highlighted by the composition and the light in the painting.
You're so right when you say she feels safe in his presence! Her body language says it all. Plus the winter roses on her feet... roses that happen to a symbol of their romance! They're clearly having a moment of intimacy on this art.
[I'm curious as well about the heart three! I wish we were told where in Westeros the art features.]
This art is also the COVER of the 2024 ASOIAF calendar. That's pretty big for rhaelya! Let's take into consideration their story is still supposed to be a mystery in ASOIAF.
It makes me all the more hyped for TWOF and the Harrenhal play this year.
Thank you so much for the ask. All the best for you, anon ♥️
