The Curtain Falls - A Lupin III Comic
So I started a super ambitious comic project called "The Curtain Falls", about Lupin in his 60s and dealing with the fact that nothing lasts forever. It's essentially my version of how his adventures end. It follows how each member of the gang retires, a car chase(!!!), and some really heartfelt moments; a bit similar to Part 6 Episode 0. I started writing and thumbnailing it in 2020 and I'm working on the final art now, page by page. The whole comic will be 50 pages + some extras and I'm going to be printing it when it's all done. Right now I'm posting pages as they're completed + sketches to my Patreon and Ko-fi, any support is much appreciated. It's a really time consuming comic since I'm doing lots of sprawling backgrounds and cars. I've learned and grown a lot while working on it and I'm super proud of how far I've come with it, so I wanted to gush about it a bit here.

PART 6! I want to watch part 6 so badly! I loved part 5 but I can't find a place to watch part 6 freely. You have got to tell me if it's better than part 5!
Fret not, for I have a Link! :D
My personal opinion is that Arc 2 of Part 6 (the arc about Tomoe) is REALLY GOOD, somewhere between as good and better than Part 5 (I haven't watched Part 5 in a while, and the fandom seems to have conflicted opinions about it, so idk what you thought of it). The plot of the arc is compelling, there is a lot of interesting one-shot side characters, everyone gets their time to shine, the filler episodes are really fun and are relevant to the plot, and there is SO MUCH DOMESTICITY between the gang, like SO MUCH MARRIED JIGLUP OH MY GODS, really the writers understood the assignment and gave it their all.
Arc 1 however (the one with Sherlock Holmes) is pretty disappointing in my opinion. Holmes & co are given way too much screentime, pushing the titular character and his gang to the background, the plot is rushed, the filler eps vary wildly in quality (The Imperial City Dreams Of Thieves is amazing, but imo you can outright skip The Killers In The Diner and Darwin's Bird. Just... they do not exist. I do not see them.) and... there doesn't seem to be any chemistry between Lupin's gang????? It all kinda felt to me like the writers had just read a summary of Lupin III and the character archetypes, and written some very generic episodes based on that vague knowledge. I'd give some positive points for Moran, but I'm biased.
I'd say watch the whole thing to make your own opinion, maybe you'll like the first arc, idk. But if you end up disliking it, don't give up on the whole season, and skip to Ep. 13: An Invitation From The Past. From Arc 1 I'd also recommend watching the filler episodes 5, 6, 8 and 9.
Also, technically part of Part 6, PLEASE watch Ep 0 - The Times (Jidai) if you haven't already. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch it.
This is not an invitation to debate the quality of Part 6, I am just giving my personal opinion because I was asked, it only engages me, I'm not trying to pass a universal judgement.

Lupin part 6 / episode 0 spoilers!!! After staring at these screenshots for several hours I feel like could write an essay on Lupin’s facial expressions but, in summary: Lupin loves Jigen and jiglup is real 🥲
The last expression is of course an artistic liberty as you don’t actually see Lupin’s face when he says “And maybe that’s why I’ve been able to stay true to myself.” I really struggled to do my imagination justice in this case. I hope it comes across as wistful/fond/ grateful.
Come yell at me about Lupin on Twitter:

I have so many thoughts and feels about Episode 0 -The Times-, but for now I wanna focus on one particular moment, because of how it finally made sense of one half of Lupin and Jigen's relationship that had me scratching my head for years.
After Lupin and Jigen get stupid drunk together in the hideout, the air starts to get a bit tense as Jigen moves to the balcony for some fresh air. Jigen is hanging with Fujiko questioning his own relationship with Lupin, and Goemon questions Lupin whether he'd care if Jigen were to leave the gang for good. At first, Lupin puts on an aloof façade, trying to make himself seem unaffected, but then he drops his guard and admits that Jigen is the only person in his life who has accepted him for who he is since the very beginning, no matter what changes he has gone through, allowing him to stay true to himself.
For a long time, I've come to understand that Jigen sees Lupin as the chaotic element he needs in his life to bring him back down from his obstinate attitude once in a while, but I hadn't quite wrapped my head around how this dynamic worked the other way around. That inebriated confession from Lupin spelled out the answer: Even someone as wild and erratic as Lupin needs a pillar of stability. For as much of a curmudgeon Jigen can sometimes be, his steadfastness is what makes him such a loyal ally to Lupin. Living your life in constant swerves with no one to fully trust, as thrilling as it may sound to someone like Lupin, will get maddening to the point of complete emotional detachment before long, so having someone like Jigen who'll always have his back, even among all the chaos and duplicity, is possibly the greatest blessing Lupin can count in his own life.
The truth really is at the bottom of a glass, isn't it?

Jigen right back at you!!

AYYYY LOOK
I'm obsessed with their character arc: SEE SHADOW DOG POST FOR DETAILS
I am constantly going insane rotating them in my brain like a fork in a microwave: MANY THOUGHTS HEAD FULL
They work better as part of a dynamic: Actually unlike everyone else on the show he ONLY works as part of a dynamic. Lupin, Fujiko, Goemon, and even Zenigata can have solo adventures that are interesting but who cares about solo Jigen? No one, that's who
What's wrong with them (affectionate): self-explanatory
What's wrong with them (derogatory): Not as much as with Lupin mostly just when he decides to crank the misogyny up to 12

There's a manga and/or anime franchise about Lupin the Third, in Lupin's universe.
Throughout the franchise, there's a bunch of references to past content and meta stuff. Taken one by one they're just easter eggs, but when you put them all together, it's highly probable that there is some sort of intradiegetic biopic-ish series about Lupin III, in Lupin's universe.
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure: Lupin is reading a manga by Monkey Punch, implying that MP exists in his universe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lupin III VS Detective Conan: Kogoro Mouri thought Lupin III was a comic book character and is surprised to learn that he is real
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Princess of the Breeze: a news article about Lupin mentions "TV first series", "TV 2nd series", and "[ep 2]"
Tumblr media
Green VS Red: there is a poster of the movie "The Castle of Cagliostro", and Yasuo is seen listening to Fire Treasure from the OST
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Characters are heard singing or whistling the opening theme on multiple occasions: a banker in Part 2 ep 143 “The Miami Bank Raid Anniversary” (8:44), and Lupin himself in "The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure" (4:43) and in Part 2 ep 99 “The Scattered Magnum” (06:35), among others
Lupin's phone ringtone in "Swallowtail Tattoo" is the opening theme (30:50)
Goemon plays his music theme on the flute in "Episode 0 - First Contact" (39:40). Granted, Goemon's not the kind of nerd who would do that, but that movie is a story told by Lupin and possibly entirely made up, and he's the kind of nerd who would describe Goemon playing his own theme.
Zenigata's phone ringtone in "Angel Tactics" is his own theme (41:18); he and a couple of ICPO officers are also listening to the full song with lyrics version of Zenigata March on the radio in "The Columbus Files" (1:17:10)
And last but not least:
Part 6 ep 17 “Win or Lose in 0.1 Seconds” : Linfeng's large collection of Lupin III figurines (they could be custom made; but they could also be mass-produced)
Tumblr media
and "Dragon of Doom" (01:16) : plushies of the whole gang in a claw crane machine, which are definitely mass-produced.
Tumblr media
In conclusion:
"We heard that you liked Lupin III, so we put Lupin III in your Lupin III so you can Lupin III while you Lupin III !"

Apparently this link is only good in the US (a pox on all region-locking), but if you haven't yet seen Kiyoshi Kobayashi's final outing/sendoff as Jigen, TMS has temporarily put it up on YouTube.
