fandom ask: N, U and Y 🍑
Thank you!!! 💜
N. Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
More F/F and NB/F ships in Baldur's Gate 3 plz ty. More Shadowheart fic in general. More trans women in fic. I'm doing my best when I can, and I've got a few mutuals fighting the good fight as well, but we're fighting against a vampiric tide.
U. Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
Shadowheart is cheating, so we can just assume she's looming over this list lmao. Some of these are "fandoms" in a loose sense lol.
Tavore Paran from Steven Erikson's Malazan series of books. This is the definition of a "grower" character. She is cold, demands a lot of her people, and the events of the books require her to be even colder and more distant from literally everyone except for her lover. She's one of the few lesbian characters in that series that I can think of off the top of my head. Her arc in the final few books is so good it makes me want to chew glass. That scene at the very, very end? Genuine tears. The only thing that moved me like that in Malazan was Beak.
Lupe dy Cazaril from Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion series of books. He is genuinely one of the capital-K Kindest characters I've ever read in fiction. A broken man who returns from wartime slavery to find purpose in his life, being a genuine and warm person to everyone he meets that deserves it. A really satisfying character arc, and he's not really much of a fighter when we meet him which is always a great fantasy character pivot for a male protagonist.
April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation. She's sarcastic as fuck, a pretty full and fairly well-rounded character for a TV comedy, and extremely weird. I have like 800k words about her on AO3 lmao. Tons of thoughts about her that literally fill multiple books.
Y. What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
I answered here but you asking this reminded me that I'm not really in any of the From Software games' fandoms despite loving those.

💗 Five Comfort Characters, Five Tags 💗
tagged by @fortune-maiden and then I promptly forgot. Sorry! But then I remembered! So I thought I'd do it now and thank you for tagging me! I've numbered them for convenience but they really aren't ranked.
1. Jowd (Ghost Trick) I know, I know, if you know me, you were probably expecting me to say Alma and yes, FFVI/GT AU Alma absolutely is! Or maybe Cabanela and yeah, I do love my glow stick man (snap snap). But canon Alma is only what we know through the people around her, and Cabanela is wonderful and fantastic and I DO love him, so I'm putting Jowd in there because sometimes I think a liiittle too much like him. It's very comforting to see how much he is adored by everyone around him--really, I'm nominating my OT3 here if I'm honest.
2. Kloe (Trails in the Sky) She just tries so hard, y'all. So, so hard, and her determination to overcome her weaknesses is really inspiring to me. Plus, I love the way her friendship with Estelle makes them both more well-rounded people. (But, again, there were SO many people from Trails I could have put here with equal justification. Estelle, Tita, Olivier, Mueller, Tio, Randy, KeA... wait, I'm kind of just copying my tagger. Well, that's how great they are!! Trails has some excellent characters.)
3. Lucca (Chrono Trigger) - We're going back in time for this one. Picture me, 13 years old, unsure what I had going for me besides my know-it-all-ness and a blithe disregard for social norms...and then here's Lucca, who is celebrated in-game for these things! It was, shall we say, a revelation. I've come and gone through many fandoms through the years, but Lucca has remained a constant source of joy.
4. Terra (Final Fantasy VI) I played CT and FFVI at basically the same time in my life and I instantly loved Terra for her endearing "weird girl" quirks, her confusion over her place in the world, and, ultimately, the way she chooses to care rather than to isolate herself even when things were the hardest for her. The first time I dyed my hair anything but a "normal" color, it was green in honor of her!
5. Lupe dy Cazaril (The Curse of Chalion) This book is a major comfort tale for me despite my rather irritable disconnect with the canon romance for the main character. (-.-) But, I love Caz for his unshakeable loyalty and his determination to choose empathy and honor over repeating the unspeakable cruelties he lived through. Caz reminds me that cycles can be broken and things can change, I think.
Honorable Mention: Princess Arjumand (To Say Nothing of the Dog) She's a horrible wonderful cat and to say I enjoy what she puts the main cast through would be an understatement XD. And yet I would let her sleep on my chest any day.
Thanks again for the tag! Not tagging anyone but feel free to try this yourself if you enjoy such things!

Things I like to learn from a few of my favourite fictional characters...
Merry Brandybuck: Organise your adventures. Do the thing even when you’re terrified. Be proud of your skills. Love, even when you’re feeling awkward. Find the joy even in the darkest times. Be an absolute fricking determinator when it is required.
Aziraphale: There is nothing wrong with some earthly pleasures and comforts. See the good in people who won’t see it in themselves. Get away from people who treat you badly. Be willing to learn and change. Waistcoats are great.
Ista dy Chalion: You are not too middle-aged to grow, to travel, to change your life, or to feel and act on desire. Don’t let people patronise you because of your mental health history. The Gods worth worshipping like it when you snark at them. Compassion and being no-nonsense are not mutually incompatible.
Geralt of Rivia: Keep trying to do the right thing and make the world a tiny bit less bleak, even when you can’t feel hopeful about it, even when things just seem relentlessly awful. Horses are great. Know how to distinguish monsters from those just trying to live their lives. Have a healthy disrespect for authority. Learn to trust, even when it’s hard.
Lady Sybil Vimes: A lot can be achieved by knowing things and talking gently and occasionally a good song. Know the value of your loved ones even when they don’t get it themselves. Animals don’t have to be cuddly and safe to be worth welfare and conservation efforts.
Anthony J. Crowley: Protect your loved ones. Rebel. Be patient with those who are trapped, even if it’s hard. Be curious. Call out injustice. Be kinder than anyone thinks you’re supposed to be. Swagger a bit. Ducks are great. So are snakes. Also waistcoats. Hazel-rah: Respect and learn from the skills of your friends. When in a leadership position, learn to delegate. Know your own limits. Be willing to find the middle ground. Listen to marginalised people. Have a picnic outside.
Cheery Littlebottom: Be yourself. If no one’s done what you’ve done yet, carve a path for yourself and others. Don’t feel you have to be the most confident or extroverted person ever to be brave. Use your brain; you have a good one and you’re allowed to be smart. Be willing to let go of your own prejudices.
Jaskier: If in doubt, have a music practice or write another song. :-) Enjoy performing. See and honour those whose personhood is denied by others. Love easily. Be very loyal to those who deserve it. Don’t feel obliged to match moods with the person you’re closest to. Massage someone you love, and put nice smelling things in their bath.
Lupe dy Cazaril: Absolutely *do* let your disability stop you from doing things; it doesn’t make you less amazing. Be kind, help others as much as you can, but also let yourself be looked after sometimes. Drink gallons of Respect Women Juice. Be foolish in all the best ways. Be snarky. Also be desperately sincere and genuine. People will just have to cope with the combination. ;-) Be cunning *and* good, and encourage both traits in others.
Frodo Baggins: Be willing to work with (and befriend!) people who have different ethical approaches to activism than your own - but hold still to your own. Learn from experience. Be compassionate but not naive. Appreciate your metamour(s). If all you can do is keep going, that is heroism too. Value love and loyalty.

Quote
"Any man can be kind when he is comfortable. I'd always thought kindness a trivial virtue, therefore. But when we were hungry, thirsty, sick, frightened, with our deaths shouting at us, in the heart of horror, you were still as unfailingly courteous as a gentleman at his ease before his own hearth." "Events may be horrible or inescapable. Men always have a choice -- if not whether, then how, they may endure." "Yes, but... I hadn't known that before I saw it. That was when I began to believe it was possible to survive. And I don't mean just my body."

“My Lord, you cannot sit there with a sword stuck through you!”
“Well,” said Cazaril reasonably, “I surely cannot move...”
I wonder intensely whether Caz was always inclined to dry, understatement-based, slightly morbid humor, or did a decade and a half of war, including several bouts of torture, a nine-month siege to starvation, and a year and a half as a galley slave just grind it into him?

'Mercy from the Father and the Mother, mercy from the Sister and the Brother, Mercy from the Bastard, five times mercy, High Ones, we beseech you.'… Mercy, High Ones. Not justice, please, not justice. We would all be fools to pray for justice.

P and U for the Fandom ask
Thanks for the ask!
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
I do love AUs. I have a whole bunch in my drafts, but here’s just one I’ve been thinking about. It’s a His Dark Materials AU. I don’t know if I’ll ever write, but what I’ve come up with so far is that Wanda is from a world where daemons don’t exist. She’s running from someone and accidentally runs through a window into another world. The world she finds is a futuristic one where people do have daemons. She tries to make her way in the world, figuring that this is better than any option she had in her world. She struggles because people are suspicious of her lack of a daemon. She eventually meets Vision, who is a synthezoid who also lacks a daemon. They help each other and bond over others disliking them for something they can’t control.
U - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
I challenged myself not to use Marvel.
Lupe dy Cazaril (The Curse of Chalion) -- I really wish there were more of a fandom for this book because Caz is one of my favorite characters of all time.
Remus Lupin (Harry Potter)
Aragorn (Lord of the Rings)
Kate Beckett (Castle)
Qui-Gon Jinn (in The Jedi Apprentice series specifically)

Get to know me?
Rules: Tag nine people you want to get to know better. I was tagged by @rivendellrose
Relationship status: Married to a funny dude. Also I have three cats and a daughter.
Favorite Color: Oh god, I have to pick one? Um. I’m always drawn to fuchsia, the true hot vivid version, but honestly, I’m just a chromaphile. All of the colors, please.
Lipstick or Chapstick: Neither. My lips are bare, baby!
Last Song I listened to: Light it Up by Major Lazer (for the fun music and amazing fucking animation by Method Studios)
Last Movie I watched: We’re watching The Expanse again on tv, does that count? Also (on our tv) we watched Valerian, City of a Thousand Planets (better than the previews made it out to be, but still silly); the second Jack Reacher movie (totally silly, but good for background entertainment); and somewhere in there we re-watched Moana.
Top 3 TV Shows: Ah, this one’s hard because I don’t watch a lot of tv shows. The Expanse, Star Trek (all of them), Justified.
Top 3 Characters: Wow, what’s with the hard questions? Lupe dy Cazaril from Curse of Chalion, Sam Vimes from Discworld, Peter Wimsey. I might have a type.
Top 3 Bands/Artist: Gah, here we’re smack up against my inability to remember names. Beethoven, Adele, Squirrel Nut Zipper
Books I’m currently reading: I’ve been trying to read in the genres I write; it’s been a little rocky. Many of the books I’ve read recently are … not good. Let’s go with Layer Your Novel by CS Lakin, Only You Can Save Mankind by Terry Pratchett, Iron and Velvet by Alexis Hall.
Tagging: I don’t really tag people, but I’d love to hear your answers!

Yes, it’s ridiculous crossover time again
“I... Huh.” It takes a lot to silence Ista dy Chalion these days, but it seems the six strangers standing sudden and bewildered in the banquet hall of the Zangre three marks after midnight are a more than sufficient cause.
Cazaril is impressed she managed even that. His own mouth cannot utter a syllable.
He hears Betriz and Lord Illvyn arrive behind them. Betriz takes his hand, and squeezes it twice. Illvyn mutters something to Ista; but of course Illvyn can’t see the full weirdness of what’s before him.
“Um,” says one of the strangers. “Do you think we might have gone wrong somewhere?” He is wearing some kind of elaborately embroidered doublet and long britches in blue and gold. There’s a musical instrument strapped to his back - a lute, or an oud, something along those lines.
The blue of his doublet, however, is drowned by the light shining around him. He’s a walking banner of azure, the Daughter’s stamp imprinted on him so dazzingly Cazaril has to fight off the urge to run forward and embrace him as a brother.
Talking of the Brother... the cloud-pale girl with corn-gold hair is burning fiery red with the Son’s light. The tall woman beside her with the warm brown skin and the tumble of red curls is radiating the green of the Mother. The other woman, dark and beautiful with an intense glare in her odd purple eyes, is almost blindingly lit by the white of the Bastard.
The other man... roils. He is black and white in both form and quality, black clothes, the rest of him white and grey, even his hair. The Father of Winter’s black and grey in a cloud about him, but with an older touch of his step-son sparking in the edges. He looks about him with grim curiosity, and catches Cazaril’s eye. Ah, now there’s a glance Cazaril has seen in his own mirror. He gives the man a rueful smile, one recovering cynic to another.
Perhaps the Daughter is blessing Cazaril with additional insight; he is intensely certain, suddenly, that neither this man nor any of the other strangers are aware that they are Gods-touched. Cazaril winces in sympathy.
“Were you aware,” says the dark woman to Ista, “that you have a white light coming off you? It’s giving me a headache.”
“So have you,” says Ista. “And I already have one. What have you all been doing for the Gods to take such an interest?”
There is a confused murmur, and then a chaotic puddle of conversation as each of the strangers apparently sees each other’s Gods-lights for the first time.
Cazaril starts to laugh. Then stops, abruptly, as Ista speaks again.
“And which of you,” she says, as all eyes turn to the sixth stranger, “has the demon-possessed horse?”

if people take my recommendations on this mess of a site, I’m going to liveblog the heck out of my umpteenth reread of The Curse of Chalion, bc few books/series deserve more recognition than the Vorkosigan Saga’s underappreciated fantasy second cousin.
Realtalk: my favorite Caz moment might honestly be at the start when the public bath attendant asks if the scars on his back mean he’s a deserter and he firmly denies it, and three minutes later he’s literally thrown out because he forgot that the only other crime that earns this many lashes is child rape. So he’s just standing naked in the street like, “wait, no, I was kidnapped by pirates...”
