so... my name is lunine (not my real name, just a nickname i got in my 2000s fame dr, and since ioved it so much, i decided to use it as my username ✨️). i’m 19 years old (but mentally i look like a 10 year old child — gojo... i see myself in you 🫵🏼🫵🏼 ). i have ADHD, and because of that, i get way more attached to my drs and s/o's than “normal people” probably do (i have crazyyyy hyperfixations). my pronouns are she/her. idk what is my sexuality (but i'm all, but heterosexual). i have a journal where i love rambling about my s/o's — i adore chattering on about both of them haushauahsuah (i'm cheesy, i know).

i've been a shifter for 4 years (yep, i discovered shifting during the fracotok era — back in 2020. but unlike others, my goal wasn’t harry potter, but boku no hero academia — I WAS OBSESSED WITH DABI AND NEEDED him to eat me 😭😭😭😭). but over the years, I’ve only tried shifting to my dr about 15 times (99% of the time, I just daydreaming and seeing fanfiction).

I LOVE throwing myself into dangerous dr's (especially apocalypse ones). why? because yes. I love adrenaline, okay? I find drs like that way more interesting (just my opinion, guysss). my friends call me crazy for choosing drs like TWD or The Last of Us. but so what???? i’ve always loved the apocalypse vibe. like, it’s so badass, yummyyy. who can judge me? 💋💋💋

Neybappe broke, Mbakimi broke 🥲 we are still alive with our Gimbappe ship. But don't know what will happen to our ship when Kyky will finally find someone in Madrid.. as he can easily make friends and he already has a good relationship with Rodrygo.. 6 - Sophia Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev - Bla bla bla cha cha cha, choreo by Cindy Stuart

Cute but I despise the song. Solid technically but imho not my thing.

5 - Chloe Panetta/Kieran Thrasher - If I Ain’t Got You, choreo by Julie Marcotte

The technical elements are a struggle which is a shame because in that field, Chloe and Kieran are definitely the most classy, for lack of a better word. 

There’s a maturity to their skating, and certain abandon when they’re not struggling with the jumps, and throws, and the twist... Pretty much everything. Chloe was injured at the beginning of the season. And they’ve been skating what ? two seasons together, but ngl I’m not optimistic about their prospects.

4 - Haruna Murakami/Sumitada Moriguchi - Le Corsaire, choreo by Cathy Reed

Classical but nice. The jump requirement for the SP doesn’t allow them to showcase their ace which are stunninng SBS jumps, and puts their other pairs elements in the spotlight. It’s still a work-in-progress but they’re a very new pair.

Also best SBS spins of the field. So fast it’s a wonder.

3 -  Cayla Smith/Andy Deng - Summer of 42, choreo by Alena Lunin

Cayla and Andy have split just after the JGPF as Andy wanted to go to university. 

While the tech content of that pair wasn’t the highest, they had some really nice skating skills and a decent musicality. Summer of 42 is starting to get overplayed imho, but it suited them well.

2 - Anastasia Golubeva/Hector Giotopoulos-Moore - Architects of the Mind, choreo by Galina Pachin and Jonathan Guerreiro

Music is whatever but I like the choreo, it’s all about coiling and snapping, enfurling like a snake, or like an accordeon. And kudos to them because the music is extremely fast paced and they are able to maintain that drive throughout the program. A really solid team and I cannot wait to see them next years among seniors.

1 - Violetta Sierova/Ivan Khobta - Vesna, choreo by Pylyp Zalevskyi

Hands down the best choreo for a short program of the season among the pairs, juniors AND seniors.

There’s just so much to love there, starting with the costumes, with Ivan in traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka, and while the embroidered flowers on Violetta’s dress are in the colour of the national flag.

The music choice also is outstanding. We need more ethno rock/folk, and less Western pop music in figure skating. And that song genuinely slaps. Please if you can have a look at the lyrics, they are beautiful, and in the context of the war, became even more haunting.

And finally the choreo is chock full of little details, lovely transitions, all taken from traditionnal dances, the hops, and turns and the moves.

Violetta and Ivan do need more speed, attack and projection to make that short really sing, so I hope they’re going to keep it for the next season and refine it.

Thinking about how, when I first listened to the Lunineers’ Cleopatra album, “Ophelia” or “Angela” didn’t stick with me. Not “Sleep on the Floor, or “My Eyes,” though they’re all in the same vein of ‘sad song wondering about what could have been’

What stuck with me was “Cleopatra,” and especially because of why I was listening to that album — I listened because someone else liked them. Someone else, across the country, liked the Lumineers. So I listened.

Wholeheartedly in the vein of “analyzing and romanticizing my life like a novel,” I think there’s more weight to hear the but I must admit it, that I would marry you in an instant/damn your wife, I'd be your mistress just to have you around than just what they said. they said more to me, with the late for the love of my life, with the when I die I’ll be on time.

But I read the script/and the costume fit/so I’ll play my part.

I’unno. Maybe I’m overthinking. I’m most likely overthinking and adding weight to something that’s just… that. A song. A sad one, but a song. Even so, I like the weight. I’ll always associate “Cleopatra” with that person, not just for its meaning, and also because they love that artist. I’ll associate every single Lumineers song with them because of it.

Maybe that’s okay, too.

Nightshade

“Do with the Nightshade what you will.”

Temperance’s opalescent eyes remain locked onto these words. They read them over and over again, confusion written into their features. One such bloom is twirled between their thumb and index finger, trying to keep their restlessness at bay.

It doesn’t work. Soon they start pacing around their little apartment like a caged cat, letter in hand, ice in their stomach. There’s an uncomfortable tingling sensation at the back of their neck, and Temperance scratches it hopelessly. Miss Winford had rejected the gift, and moreover, rejected them. They drop the nightshade to the floor. 

The san’layn stops dead in their tracks, staring down at the letter. They don’t understand. Perhaps if they simply read it again, and again - maybe they had missed something? Read it wrong? Temperance frantically searches the handwriting of their Apothecary friend for relief, but they find none. Miss Winford addresses them as formally as ever, but it’s colder now. Icicles hang between the lines.

With a shaky exhale, the dancer sits down at the side of their bed, lips pressed into a thin line. And then, they replay the events of that night. Meeting Woodwhisper. Hide and seek. Contacting Talundriel. Lunine had addressed Miss Winford by her first name, much to her offense, and she had stayed behind the group for minutes. But that didn’t seem like enough to warrant this.

Temperance had missed something, been careless, but no matter how many times they replay their memories, they can’t find it. Before they have a chance to collect themself, the claw of their thumb has punctured the letter. They get to their feet with a gasp, hurrying over to their second hand table. Smooth out the corners. Press the parchment down. Doll hands are careful and loving, trying to save and savour this — what feels like the parting memoir from a friend. They swallow hard and then stop breathing entirely. They don’t have a chair to sit down in, and so they simply stand there, staring at the letter with their canines sinking into their bottom lips.

They can’t accept this.

Some way, somehow, Temperance has to make amends. They’re not ready to let go. They’re not ready to lose a friend. Ever careful, they fold the letter and hide it away in their drawers. A blur of green and blue catches their attention from the corner of the eye. The nightshade, carelessly discarded, beckons them from the cold tile floor. The stem is snapped right at the middle. In a few swift motions, it joins its twins in a teapot filled with water. They have no use for the bloom; they have no idea what it’s uses are. To nurture them is the only thing they can think to do. They won’t be careless with them again. Like they had been with Miss Winford.

Xmas Message For 2019

And here we go, my 19th annual year-end love letter online …Georgi Balinov and I rang in the new year at a giant party in Bangkok, halfway around the world. That foreign location, its beauty and tastes, set the tone for my 2019, a year of seeing the world, while stabilizing my life. Though often in flux or movement, 2019 was a year many things normalized over the year.

In January, almost immediately after arriving stateside, I crossed the pond and saw Michelle Visage perform in the West End with Peter Wish. Afterward, I played with her wigs backstage and walked her towards the queer kids lining up for selfies and autographs. I am very lucky to have Peter and Michelle in my life, kindred spirits both. One reminding me that fame, fortune, ebb, and flow, but that being real is what matters most. The other, a reminder to stay forever young. I visited Berlin yet again and did the usual, working, and playing, hard.

February appeared and I traveled to Philadelphia with Sandra Hansel, Georgi, George Sapio, and Anthony DeFilippis. We toured Lisa Roberts’ house, saw a Dieter Rams exhibit, dined with George Alley. In Lambertville, that Sunday, I bought vinyl and vintage hats. Later that month, I got a swallow tattooed on my hand, a symbol of flight and travel, and Warhol’s knives, blackened into my shin. An Eames exhibit in Oakland was a sweet way to end the month.

In March with my crew, Georgi, Khadyon Reid, Luis Urribarri, Anthony, and George, descended upon Salvador for Carnival. It was insane! I watched Anitta live, and danced in a sea of pushing, fighting, kissing Brazilians for days upon days. I felt unsafe and alive, threatened and excited. It was intense. Back home I got my other hand tattooed, again honoring my love of seeing the world. I traveled to Portland, came back to NYC at the end of the month, finally moving into our apartment, the one we bought 1.5 years before, that I designed, and had renovated head to toe. Finally, we had our dream home. The weekend we moved in, the place was still not ready, but we were sick of living without our things and in other people’s beds. Peg Kendall and Georgi’s mom came, and we worked our asses off unpacking and starting to make the 2800 square foot loft on west 13th street a home. We’d lived in Airbnbs and friends’ places for 19 months and it was tiring not having a home, not having most of our things. My art! My toys! My shoes!. Those months taught me how important a home, a safe place, and the oasis of my collections is to my mental health. From March on I felt more on solid ground and dedicated more energy to my career and friendships as a result.

In April we went to Coachella, seeing Ian and Jose Seronni, JJ and Andrey Lunin, and dancing in the desert of California. Multiple trips to San Francisco, catching glimpse of old friends, scaling my team at work, as I took on more and more responsibility.

In May, George Sapio and I celebrated (me a little early) a shared, fun birthday weekend at Soho Farmhouse. Joined by Matthew Kelleher, Mark Silver, Jaime Tanner, Matt Lynch, and others, we went shooting and feasted on pheasant in the English countryside.June was really busy, insanely so. 

For my 43rd in early June, I had a 30-person dinner party in our new place! We ended up at Club Cumming after, but before friends, new, and old, showered me with a vinyl record, the admission fee I’d set for my party. Lauren Foster, who has shared her home with us, was, appropriately, our first overnight guest. London, again, Berlin, too. Then home for Pride. Willam Ralphie hosted Bingo at eBay, Zach Augustine, David Mason Chlopecki, other loves attended. That weekend danced to both Madonna and Grace Jones on the pier and danced with 15K others at Javitz, where my favorite singer, Cyndi Lauper, belted “I Drove All Night,” her best song, at midnight. I stayed until the sun came up. NYC was electric that weekend. Parties, icons, friends from the world over … the city has an energy you could literally see and taste. I caught a few moments of the parade, overtaking lower Manhattan, and I smiled really big. God, it can feel good being gay! God, the world has improved for gay people (and yes, I know, we still have ways to go, especially for more marginalized LGBTQ groups). But I still took a moment to acknowledge the things that are better, that I have seen in my very gay lifetime. NYC that weekend was the ultimate place to reflect.

July 4th I went to Hamptons, with Ricardo, Brian, Felipe L. Mollica, others, guests of Anthony. Hosted Fab.com reunion, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, and took my team to Korea (where I shared a traditional Korean meal with Jae Hah), China (where I ate bird’s nests, jellyfish, sea snails, saw a Yves Klein show with Adnan Abbasi, and danced to 90s pop in a packed gay club), and Moscow (where I was amazed at how clean the city was and where I went to a traditional sauna and was whipped, naked, with tree leaves in front of dozens of Russian dudes in the nude). While in Russia a protest erupted, literally below the rooftop bar I dined in. Russia seemed freer than I’d expected, way more Western, up until this moment. I ended the weekend at a club at 3 AM, Russian women in high, high heels, dancing on the bar, vodka flowing like water. 2020 saw me traveling to places I romanticized as a child. Russia, one such place. I thoroughly enjoyed the friendships formed in Moscow, the food, and history. I want to return.

August, I was back in San Jose and Portland for work, then off again to Europe for vacation. We started our trip in Croatia, where Georgi and I kayaked around Dbruvnik’s harbor. Croatia’s cliffs and turquoise water did not disappoint, as we boated to islands and swam in caves. Driving south into Montenegro, the architecture reminded me more of Polish, Bulgarian trips, the water, greener. At the Amman we laid out next to The Beckhams, watching David kick a soccer ball with workers of the hotel, and watching Victoria read a book. Georgi and I then ventured to Mykonos, sunning til sunset and dancing til sunrise. A weekend trip upstate with our besties (including a guest appearance by Eric Lee, riding rides at the Colombia County fair, cooking pies, and grilling meats, ended our summer.

In September I went to Berlin and did Folsom and a speaking gig in front of 1K eBay sellers. I went again to Tel Aviv, meeting gay Israeli technology workers and a bevy fo Israeli start-ups. In Jerusalem, I returned to the wonderful Machneyuda with Gilad Ayalon, where they remembered me from my birthday the year before.

October saw us hosting my mother and my niece for a visit. We fell in love with Company XVI, a dance/burlesque/performance art troupe in Brooklyn. I took my mother to see Madonna, a night I will cherish forever. And we saw Dear Evan Hanson. A weekend in Miami with Lauren Foster and K was needed warmth. I took Georgi to see both acts of The Inheritance (so good!).  Then off to Berlin, again, and Paris, where I looked at art and went shopping for fall clothes. Halloween, in NYC, was brilliant and over the top; I went as white Pierrot clown. In Brooklyn, to Honey Dijon, we danced all night. Ralph Rucci, the American couturier reposted our photo on Instagram, calling it high-fashion, however, it was Georgi who won the night as Spock.

November I was in NYC early on, shopping with Thomas Cawson (who hooked me up with pink denim Helmut Lang), eating Christmas cookies, and being interviewed by Buzzfeed, a segment on 90s toys. I imitated a Furby. Then a week in Portland (I glow-in-the-dark-miniature-golfed), and off to Helsinki, catching up with former friends from Fab, One Nordic, Hem. Then to Lapland, with Georgi, George, and Anthony, lapping up wine, winter wonderlands, and dining on reindeer and elk. Dog sledding, snowmobiling, Northen lights! Another childhood desire checked from the list. Dinner with Michelle Case in London closed the month.

In December I went back to Berlin (my second home) and hosted a fundraiser for Single Step in our home. In one night Georgi and I helped raise $50K to help build Bulgaria’s first LGBTI center. It was also an impromptu holiday party: so many old friends together again in one room. And now Georgi and I sit in an airport lounge, awaiting our flight to Baltra, in the Galapagos. Once we land, we’ll board a 7-day cruise on a mega-yacht/small cruise ship. This, I feel, I have been waiting my entire life for.

I often write about how I was lonely as a kid. I was gay, I had a drug-addicted father, I grew up very poor. I oftentimes say music saved my life. But, I don’t write enough about the joy animals gave me too. I had so many pets: newts, turtles, tortoises, tree frogs, geckos, crabs, salamanders, etc. Caring for them, feeding them, gave me peace and allowed me to love. One turtle I had had a cracked shell. He lived in my room for many, many years. I always preferred him, with his defects, to the others. I think I feel the same about people.

As a child, I became obsessed with the Galapagos Islands, and mostly the tortoises. I would read about them in encyclopedias and race to see them at zoos. I always felt connected to turtles. They were my spirit animal. Later in life, I’d bloom, my feathers growing, my pride, alive. I’d no longer consider myself a turtle, my spirit animal changed. I told this story to my colleague Eben Sermon, who runs eBay’s German business: I always wanted to be a turtle. But I ended up a cockatoo. Eben brought this up last week in Berlin and it made me think a bit more about affinities for animals and how I have not had that connection as often as I probably should.

So this week, before we ring in New Years in Rio, I will honor the old me, the kid, the quieter Bradford, the sadder Bradford, by visiting those turtles, finally.

And I’ll marvel at the wonder of nature and evolution, both the evolution of animals and this world, and also the very real and dramatic evolution of my spirit and happiness.

This is no different than xabi leaving us 2 days before the window closed without a backup to pick up the slack (thankfully toni can pretty much cover any position in midfield)

favourite summer makeup products !!

during the summer i like to go for stuff that multi tasks so i have less in my hand luggage and that is also light and glowy so !!! here goes !!

1. pixi glow mist - a great primer that’s light and not sticky, plus it’s 80ml so it won’t hold you up in hand luggage !!

2. nyx mirco brow pencil in taupe - a staple for me now, if nothing else i will always fill in my eyebrows (which is why i do them first in case i have to run out half way through!) user friendly, affordable and a great colour. what’s not to love?

3. cle cosmetics ccc cream in light - this is perfect. it manages to still have coverage (it doesn’t do nothing) but still be light and dewy and it feels like nothing on your face. i ALWAYS get compliments on my skin when i wear this because it’s natural and evening but it still lets your skin breathe. plus spf 45 to protect your face from the summer sun !!

4. nars radiant creamy concealer in chantilly - one of the few concealers that runs light enough for me. medium buildable coverage that’s soft and glowy. no complaints (apart from the hefty price tag!) 

5. becca beach tint in guava - a super pretty pink that’s water thin and blends effortlessly, really quick and easy and you can use whatever excess on your lips for a diffused look! a great 2 in 1! plus it’s water resistant so it’s perfect for the beach or pool (clue’s in the name)

6. rms living luninizer - gorgeous glitter free glow, soft focus and subtle but doesn’t do nothing like some natural highlights. stays the whole day and doesn’t fade into a glitter fart on your face, perfect for those who want to fool everyone into thinking that their skin is just naturally THAT good !! plus its organic. always a bonus

7. nars sun wash diffusing bronzer in seaside - this had my name on it. sheer with no glitter but super buildable and natural? right up my alley. it’s so soft and beautiful, i use a morphe m500 to apply it and it defines in the most subtle way possible. a great combo. it only comes in 4 shades and they’re all pretty similar which sucks but seaside has the perfect undertone for me. VERY user friendly and perfect for beginners (like me)

8. l’oreal brow artist plumper in transparent - there’s not much to say about this (i mean... it’s a brow gel) but i do love it! i’m a fan of feathery brows and this achieves that look for me, sets my brows in place and lasts the whole day. plus it’s affordable. 10s all round

9. urban decay perversion mascara - doesn’t clump but adds volume. super black. doesn’t end up all over my face by the end of the day. no complaints. to me a mascara is a mascara is a mascara but this one is really good, i often skip it if i’m on holiday but i never go away without a tube !!

10. buxom full on lip cream in white russian - again another product that i often give a miss on holiday BUT this is my all time favourite lip gloss. looks beautiful on its own or over any more nude lipstick, lasts for way longer than any gloss i’ve ever tried and it’s super glossy and gorgeous. love love love!

honourable mentions !!

1. colourpop blotted lip in ice cube - such a pretty colour and i love the formula of these! they’re matte and sheer and add just the right amount of colour. get the popsicle stain look sans the popsicle !!

2. no7 perfect light pressed powder in fair - an old love to set down concealer if i feel like i need to (my skin is dry but this is my saving grace) it doesn’t cake up and it’s super fine. it’s smooth and doesn’t completely mattify or make your face look flat

3. lipstick queen glossy pencil in catalina - this is crazy expensive for what it is imo (i bought it in spain last year in a sephora sale) BUT it is really pretty and you can use it on your cheeks too for really subtle colour. they’re often on sale, though, and i recommend picking one up if it’s got a good reduction hahaha !!
