The Endless Space Sketch related (dedicated to Storyboard – Moonshot Edition sketchbook) • Six missions landed men on the Moon, beginning with Apollo 11 in July 1969, during which Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. Apollo 13was intended to land, however it was restricted to a flyby due to a malfunction aboard the spacecraft. All nine crewed missions returned safely to the Earth. Twelve astronauts walked on the lunar surface, and six of those drove the #LunarRovingVehicles. • I know ... nobody knows about the rest of them just the Apollo 11. Daily Waypoint | N 28° 31′ 23.88″ W 80° 40′ 54.84″ Lunar Roving Vehicle—The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) is a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the American Apollo program (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972. They are popularly known as "Moon buggies". Built by Boeing, each LRV weighed 463 lbs, could carry two astronauts, equipment and lunar samples, and had a designed top speed of 8 mph. They were transported to the Moon folded up in the Lunar Module's Quadrant 1 Bay. After being unpacked, they were driven an average distance of 19 mile on each of the three missions, without major incident. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the visitor center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida. The center is north-northwest of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean, midway between Miami and Jacksonville on Florida's Space Coast, due east of Orlando. It features exhibits and displays, historic spacecraft and memorabilia, shows, IMAX theaters, and a range of bus tours of the spaceport. "Space Shuttle Atlantis" exhibit is home to the real Space Shuttle Atlantis orbiter and the Shuttle Launch Experience, a simulated ride into space. The center also provides astronaut training experiences, including a multi-axial chair and Mars Base simulator. The visitor complex also has daily presentations from a veteran NASA astronaut. A bus tour, included with admission, encompasses the separate Apollo/Saturn V Center. https://www.fmgphoto.com/Feature-Special-Galleries/n-W7xDfN/Kennedy-Space-Center/i-7jQ8jN9/A https://followingmygps.com/kennedy-space-center/ #KennedySpaceCenter #KSC #CapeCanaveral #Florida #NASA #lunarrovingvehicle #Apollo #SaturnV #spaceexploration #space #apolloprogram #apollosaturnvcenter #discoveramerica #travelpics #travellife #travelinspiration #travelblog #travelphotography #fmgphoto #followingmygps #travelphotography #traveller #photography #travelamerica #lifestyle #LifeWellLived #travelmagazine #roadtripping #exploring #roadtrip (at Kennedy Space Center, NASA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDHBxLKsRDu/?igshid=ukfhtl34m8dz

#TBT: Apollo 17 Lands on Lunar Surface – Dec. 11, 1972 by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center Via Flickr: This week in 1972, Apollo 17 landed on the lunar surface and became the third and final mission to employ the Lunar Roving Vehicle -– a lightweight, electric vehicle designed to operate in the low-gravity vacuum of the Moon. It allowed Apollo astronauts to extend the range of their moonwalks. Here, astronaut Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 commander, makes a short checkout of the Lunar Roving Vehicle during the early part of the first Apollo 17 moonwalk at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. Today, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center is playing a vital role in the Artemis program by developing the Space Launch System, the backbone of NASA’s exploration plans and the only rocket capable of sending humans to the Moon and Mars. The NASA History Program is responsible for generating, disseminating, and preserving NASA’s remarkable history and providing a comprehensive understanding of the institutional, cultural, social, political, economic, technological, and scientific aspects of NASA’s activities in aeronautics and space. Although only a handful of people ever got to use one in action, the #LunarRovingVehicle was one of the most remarkable “cars” ever made. Use on the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions in the early 1970s, development of the #LRV had been contemplated for a long time - as far back as the early 50s, men like the Fred Whipple, Willy Ley, Mieczysław Bekker, and the controversial Wernher von Braun postulated the need for a transportation device on the Moon once humans reached it. People’s faith in the abilities of science to advance humanity, in a world where many elderly people could very easily remember a time without electricity, telephones, or airplanes, was quite strong - and #science delivered, offering vaccines, jets, modern medicine, and ... the Moon. But the real plans for a working LRV didn’t get underway until June, 1969 - just days before the July 20th, 1969 landing of astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the #lunar surface. Boeing was awarded the contract to develop the vehicle - which had to work reliably in no atmosphere and low gravity and which had to be compact enough to store in a spacecraft - which it estimated would cost $19M in 1969 dollars. In the end, it cost about twice that. General Motors Defense Research Laboratories, led by Ferenc Pavlics, a Hungarian immigrant, developed the wheels, suspension, and motors - which were electrically driven. Non-rechargeable Zinc-Potassium batteries drove the 32” spun-aluminum wheels, and the rover had a range of 57 miles - they were not particularly fast (they never went faster than 11.2 mph), but exploration, not speed, was the purpose. It used a tubular aluminum frame that made it foldable for transport, but rigid once unfolded, capable of taking about a 1000-lb. payload (#astronauts included). The first Rover arrived on the moon on July 30, 1971, and the last was left behind on December 14, 1972. The journey to the #Moon was one way for the Rovers, an they're still up there. The engineering mockup, seen here, is preserved at the @museumofflight.  #ig_autoshow #astronomypictureoftheday #Apollo15 #LunarRover #MoonBuggy #EVs #electriccars #exploring_shotz #exploration (at The Museum of Flight)
