prompt: Jon and Gendry talking about Arya

Jon smiles when Gendry appears at his solar door, grateful for someone who doesn’t want to ask him questions about the upcoming battles or thrones.  They sit and have a mug of beer before Jon finally admits to himself that he should probably play at being king for a minute or two.

“And everything’s right in the forge?  No problems?”

Gendry shakes his head.  “No, everything is going well and will be ready.”

He studies him for a moment.  “Then why do you look like you’re about to jump out of your skin?”

He exhales harshly, scrubbing at his face.  “It’s - I mean, that is - I need to ask you for something.”

“After all you’ve done?  Anything.”

“No, you see - “  Gendry stops, obviously wrestling with his words.  “The thing is - I mean - “

“Spit it out, man!” Jon laughs.

“I want your blessing or permission or whatever it is you ask for.”

“For what?”

“Arya.”

“Arya?  Why would you need - “  

Realization dawns over him, and this time it is Jon who struggles to find words.  Gendry wants his blessing to be with Arya?  Little Arya with her dirty face and uneven stitches, who terrorized poor Septa Mordane and spent more time in the mud than in a gown?  Except, of course, she isn’t that little girl anymore.  That may be who Jon sees when he looks at his little sister, but that is not the woman she is now.  And gods be good, when the hells did Arya become a woman?  

“I know I’m a bastard,” Gendry rushes on, clearly trying to get everything out before he expects to be punched or run through or gelded, “and I don’t have anything to offer her except a shop in Flea Bottom that I left to come here.  But I love her.  I’ve loved her since we were kids, and I’ll do right by her.  She wouldn’t stand for anything else.”

The idea of Gendry even attempting to mistreat Arya makes Jon smile.  “No, she’d never let you do that.”

“Aye,” he laughs.  “I know you’re not really her brother, but she loves you like one.  And, quite honestly, you’re not as scary as Lady Sansa or Bran so…Figured it was right to ask you since she’ll care the most what you think.”

“You want to marry her?”

“I want whatever she’s willing to give me.  I learned a long time ago that Arya decides things at her own pace.”

“She does.”  Jon swallows hard before managing, “If she wants you, she can have you.  And you’ll always have a place here if you want it.”

He nods, relief flooding his face.  “I do.  She wants to stay here, and I want to stay with her.”

“My fath - my uncle always said that the most important thing about a man was his honor, and you’re an honorable man.  I’d threaten to kill you if you hurt her, but I suppose a man who loves Arya knows she’d kill you first.”

Gendry smiles as he gets to his feet.  “Thank you.  I’ll leave you to it then.”

When he tells Daenerys later about Gendry’s surprise proposal, his lover looks at him, a look of amusement and pity on her porcelain face.  “Oh, are you joking?  You truly didn’t know?”

“You did?”

“Everyone does.  Missandei caught them kissing behind the forge the other day.”

Jon shakes his head and waves his hand.  “No, stop, I don’t want to know.”

Arya is gonna kill some people and then probably cry over it, if D&D wanna bring any complexity to her character (so this bullet is a ~soft maybe tbh)

idk are we even going to see Essos again? I would guess not but they’re going to have to TALK about it at some point.

have lots of conversations about the nature of leadership and how we’re going to alter/change the transfer of power (basically the point of the entire series)(plus the whole point of tyrion’s character)(also the whole point of the angst over Dany’s barrenness + the convo she had with Tyrion about who her successor was going to be)(DO IT LIKE THE ROMANS JUST PICK SOMEONE RANDOM AND ADOPT THEM)(lol omg what if this is one big trick for Dany to adopt Jon I WOULD DIE)

Deal with The Long Night coming and how the small folk are going to handle that shit in a time-consuming and narratively-satisfying way

Watch Sam start writing A Song of Ice and Fire for a solid few minutes as the ultimate finale scene (THEY’RE SUCH FAN BOYS THEY WON’T BE ABLE TO NOT FRODO THE SHIT OUT OF SAMWELL TARLY)

So yeah like —————- all of this is going on and has to be accomplished in four or five hours and yet?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Jon is supposed to realize he actually wants to be banging Sansa over Dany and he’s going to betray Dany and fight her after all the OTHER fighting he’s done and already is canonically fuckin’ sick and tired of? 

The “best” outcome for that crowd is Jon and Dany agreeing that they’re just star-crossed lovers, ships passing in the night, brought together for some epic Age of Heroes shit but not meant to be married, and Jon fucks off back to Winterfell while Dany fucks off back to Essos/to rule a few kingdoms in the South and they exchange angsty, awkward love letters and bang a few more times during diplomatic exchanges while Jon stays in Winterfell and probably stays a hermit at this point. (Honestly I just want him to have a year-long zen retreat once this is all done just like COMMUNE WITH NATURE DUDE U FUCKIN’ DESERVE IT.)

Much more likely that Jon and Dany both die in the War for the Dawn, all the dragons die, and the remaining Starks raise the new bb!Targ in Winterfell and work towards getting Westeros on some sort of proto-democracy track. Which, again, is THE POINT OF THE SERIES.

So yeah, I’m ready for the tears, because honestly? THEY WILL HAVE BROUGHT IT UPON THEMSELVES.

maybe because some of the plot points were so expensive to shoot? like the loot train sequence, or the dragons rescuing Jon&Co, or the Unsullied taking Casterly Rock? There were a lot of armies moving around and lots of CGI money for the dragons. Just my guess.

Oh gosh yeah good point, I’m sure that’s part of it! 

And I bet those battle scenes took so gd long to shoot too. It probably ate up sooo much production time!

Bless your patience. When I see all of the "there's a hierarchy in this fandom!!!!111!" aneurisms I just frown and think, you mean friendships???? Among people who've known each other for a while??? Why does this cause anger??? No one's getting a prize here???

I think they do mean friendships, even if they don’t realize that that’s what it is, rather than some implicit social structure full of rewards and punishments. And the thing is, if someone is looking to get some sort of increased fandom cachet by interacting with people they consider BNFs, they’re already showing they don’t care about the people they’re interacting with, just what they can get out of it. That’s a shit way to make friends and get fandom support.
