Montemar Ch F: Fabio Fognini [1] def. Lukas Neumayer 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
L. Neumayer tried his best to match F. Fognini's rhythm when he also found his lines, but it was insufficient as the latter drew first blood in the third set by breaking early with some forehand winners paving the way to it. While the former tried to take advantage of the latter's tightness, he could not maintain the pace, where an erratic service game caused the Italian first seed's break for the match. As a result, F. Fognini generated 13 break points, converting 13 of them than L. Neumayer's 12 chances to break and converting 5 of them.
Besides, despite the slight dip in the second set, F. Fognini also appeared more solid on serve. Scoring 2 aces than L. Neumayer's 1, F. Fognini had the slight edge on his first serves by winning 60% of his first serve points, 1% more than L. Neumayer, which helped him control the majority of the flow. However, his 7 double faults added the risk to his second serves, but the Italian first seed was still able to win 47% of his second serves points, 8% more than L. Neumayer, who double-faulted 5 times but frequently erred his follow-up midway, mostly third-shot errors.
With this title, F. Fognini returned to the Top 100 for the first time as he went back to 89 live by the end of the tournament, subsequently withdrawing from the Maia Challenger for his well-deserved rest, confirming his spot in the 2025 Australian Open main draw as a direct entrant. L. Neumayer's season turned out to also end here, where his 2025 Australian Open qualification berth was pretty much confirmed with this run. Way to end this season with a bang!

Donnerstag, 2.8.

F. Fognini then had a dominant start to the third set, kicking things off with a forehand down-the-line winner to set up his lead before breaking early to 1-0 moments after his forehand winner created his latest break point, strengthening his position with a service game hold to 2-0. Somehow, L. Neumayer's forehand error caused the first seed's double-break lead to 3-0 before he consolidated to 4-0.
Afterward, F. Fognini forced the deuce in the fifth game with a forehand winner, but L. Neumayer put his name on the board with a service game hold to 4-1. An erratic service game from the Austrian 2 games later then generated the Italian's initial match points on return, which were saved (including the latest one with a forehand pass) before the Austrian massively held to 5-2. While this meant F. Fognini should have served for the title, another erroneous service game was culminated with L. Neumayer's forehand winner to break back 5-3, but the latter was unable to follow it up as another service game slip caused the Italian first seed to break for the match 6-3, winning him the title and securing him the Top 100 return.

Compared to the first set, the second set was a complete contrast as F. Fognini slightly dipped for some reason. L. Neumayer found his forehand in the fourth game, whose winner paved the way before he broke to 3-1 thanks to a forehand return winner as he punished F. Fognini's erratic service game, where he double-faulted 2 consecutive times to start. Without any further hesitation, the unseeded Austrian consolidated his lead to 4-1.
F. Fognini still kept in touch with a service game hold to 4-2. However, the Italian first seed's erratic service game two games later, which was marked by his +1 forehand errors to start things off, was culminated with a failed drop shot to create L. Neumayer's set point, which ended up being converted (6-2) to force the deciding set.

The penultimate week's Challenger finals then continued with the Montemar Challenger, where first seed and wild card Fabio Fognini, who survived the scenic route after defeating qualifier Inaki Montes-de la Torrw 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-0 in a physical battle boiling down to their endurance, faced Lukas Neumayer, who also survived a rollercoaster as he knocked out wild card Pol Martin Tiffon 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 despite having a chance to serve for the match in the tenth game of the second set. As chaotic as this match appeared to be, other than their balance of power, point construction also came into play in some cases.
Somehow, the match started with L. Neumayer's backhand down-the-line winner catching the line to minimize the gap in the second game, but F. Fognini became more aggressive, with a timely forehand pass securing his early break to 2-0. However, the Austrian immediately broke back (2-1) thanks to a timely smash, and F. Fognini almost doubled his break when he had another forehand down-the-line, but L. Neumayer held that game to 3-2.
Somehow, a forehand error from L. Neumayer caused F. Fognini's break of serve to 4-2 before the former caused a deuce with a successful drop shot, but even if another down-the-line winner caused another deuce, the Italian first seed's forehand got outhit, where he got broken back to 4-3. F. Fognini then started the next game with another down-the-line winner before he broke back again to 5-3, where he earned an opportunity to serve for the first set, which he succeeded (6-3) to stand out in this first set.

Tulln Ch F: Jan Choinski def. Lukas Neumayer 6-4, 6-1 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Choinski had a service game slip midway through the first set, but he capitalized on L. Neumayer's sloppy follow-up toward the end of the first set, where one of his double faults paved the way to his working pass that allowed him to break for the set. From there, the Brit appeared firmer, asking the necessary questions to the Austrian's forehand until he went out of balance at the end. As a result, J. Choinski converted 100% of his 4 break points compared to L. Neumayer's 33% break point conversion rate out of his 3 break points.
Besides, it was a decent serving day for J. Choinski throughout this match. Even if both players only scored an ace, the Brit had the better serving percentage by winning 71% of his first serve points, 6% more than L. Neumayer, which helped him escape trouble in numerous occasions. However, the Austrian's 3 double faults faded his second serve winning percentage to 33%, 22% lower than J. Choinski, which made it even more attack-prone at worst.
This marked J. Choinski's third career Challenger title after winning the Campinas Challenger 2022 and the Meerbusch Challenger 2023, putting himself back in the Top 200 and staying in form after his US Open qualification, with hopes for more boosts to close this season with. In the meantime, it might not to be for L. Neumayer, but there is still plenty of time.

The second set suddenly became a one-way traffic as J. Choinski appeared firmer from his groundstrokes. After holding his serves to 1-0, he blew L. Neumayer's game points before his intuitive volleys created his break point. This was immediately converted through a delicate drop shot (2-0), with a consolidation right after even if the Brit was 0-30 down in the next game.
Somehow, J. Choinski continued this dominant showing by doubling the break (4-0) as he exposed L. Neumayer's more vulnerable forehands, which cracked under pressure. The former then held his serves to 5-0 and L. Neumayer was still on the board with a service game hold to 5-1, where J. Choinski earned his opportunity to serve for the match, which he did as he delivered the second-set breadstick (6-1) to secure his first Challenger title of the year.

Several hours later, this week's Challenger finals continued with the Tulln Challenger, that featured Jan Choinski, who just qualified for the 2024 US Open (d. Maxime Cressy in Q3, l. Roberto Carballes Baena in 5 sets back in R1), continued his positive form as he notably stunned first seed Vit Kopriva and came back from a set and a break down in the third set to knock out qualifier Marvin Moeller back in the first two rounds before defeating in-form alternate Jakub Nicod 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. He then took on Lukas Neumayer, who stunned second seed Jerome Kym 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4 in a classic encounter before knocking out Rudolf Molleker 6-4, 6-3 in a rather straightforward manner in the previous round. Somehow, this match turned out to have some competitive beginnings, but the one who stood firmer at the end of the first set continued their form even brilliantly as the match progressed.
L. Neumayer had a decent start by pressing J. Choinski's forehand to create his initial break point in the fourth game, but the latter imposed a similar thing to save the break point before scoring a massive hold to 2-2. After the unseeded Brit held his serves to 3-2, he fumbled one of L. Neumayer's game point with a fourth-shot backhand down-the-line winner before the Austrian's forehands became more susceptible to error, thus the said errors created J. Choinski's break point before a forehand down-the-line winner confirmed the break (4-2).
However, the moment did not last long because L. Neumayer took advantage of J. Choinski's other errors midway, passing from his forehand side to secure his break-back to 4-3, surviving the latter's forehand winner before levelling the play to 4-4. Nonetheless, J. Choinski came back from 0-30 down to hold his serves to 5-4, which played a crucial role as L. Neumayer's balance started to be questioned, peaking at the Austrian's double fault that created J. Choinski's set point before its conversion thanks to his working pass, thus the Brit broke for the first set 6-4 to put himself ahead in this match.

Mauthausen Ch R1: Lukas Neumayer def. Gabriel Diallo [3] 4-6, 7-5, 4-2 ret. Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
G. Diallo tried to adapt his game into the red clay, where he built his rally tolerance as he constructed his points. Some turned out to produce some notable winners, but it was insufficient for him to close things out as L. Neumayer started redirecting. With such pace, it might have taken a while for him to get the hang out of the rhythm, but the physicality necessary affected his abdomen, thus his immediate retirement in the third set. Somehow, even bar the retirement, both G. Diallo and L. Neumayer utilized their aggression to generate 7 break points, with the latter breaking thrice thanks to his baseline efforts.
Furthermore, even before the retirement, L. Neumayer still had a more consistent service game despite the slight differences. Even though G. Diallo fired 3 aces, some of which got himself out of some troubles, L. Neumayer still won 6% more points from his first serves with 76%, making it appeared exceptional. On the other hand, despite double-faulting 5 times, the Austrian still won 4% more points than G. Diallo, whose second serves looked slightly more vulnerable at 51%, thus it appeared risky even before the back injury that might have affected his serve.
In the second round, L. Neumayer will face alternate Dimitar Kuzmanov, who defeated qualifier Mohamed Safwat 6-3, 6-2 earlier in the first round. A test of aggression definitely awaits, alongside their balance considering how often they struck each other from the baseline with their depths. Could be an intriguing encounter in one sense or another.
