Helsinki Ch R2: Jan Choinski def. Joao Fonseca 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Fonseca might have dominated the first set, thus the bagel, but J. Choinski adapted well as he put the ball in during most occasions, forcing the former to hit erroneous extra shots. This way, the Brit had some physical edge, nailing the rhythm thanks to his baseline play, controlling the flow as soon as he anticipated the ball well. As a result, J. Choinski generated more break points with 6 compared to J. Fonseca's 5, converting 67% of his break points throughout the match.
Furthermore, J. Choinski turned out to have sharper service games throughout the match. Scoring 6 aces than J. Fonseca's 1, the Brit won 67% of his first serve points, 8% more than J. Fonseca, which helped him navigating the chaos. However, even if the former double-faulted twice, he still had the slight edge in his second serves by winning 1% more second serve points with 51% compared to J. Fonseca's 50%.
J. Choinski was eventually eliminated in the quarterfinals, where fifth seed Luca Nardi won 6-4, 6-3 in a straightforward manner. The Italian will face Denis Yevseyev, who knocked out third seed and home hope Otto Virtanen 6-4, 7-5 thanks to his powerful showing. This might bring the most chaotic flow possible in terms of their aggression, with both their service game consistency and offensives being tested in this match. Who knows what this match could bring to close the singles night with!

The third set then became a one-way traffic as J. Choinski went after J. Fonseca's groundstrokes, where the latter mostly erred under pressure. It all started from his preceding forehand to J. Fonseca securing his break point before its conversion to 2-1 after 2 consecutive holds. This was also the case after J. Choinski's massive service game hold to 3-1, where J. Fonseca's forehand error created his other break point before its conversion to 5-2. Consequently, J. Choinski earned his chance to serve for the match, which he succeeded (6-2) even if he conceded 2 points to secure his spot in the quarterfinals.

However, even if J. Fonseca tried his best to sustain his range, J. Choinski made this ordeal slightly more physical, thus the latter steadily shifted the moment in his favor. The Brazilian had a fair start with his forehand winner setting up his one-point lead, but J. Choinski still led 2-1 by the end of the service game. This huge hold properly questioned J. Fonseca's range, whose third-shot errors caused the latter to be broken to 3-1.
Subsequently, even if J. Fonseca fired a cross-court forehand winner in hopes to break back while setting his one-point lead, J. Choinski responded with a massive hold to 4-1. Since then, the Brit became more aggressive, scoring a forehand return winner to set a 2-point lead before another shot winner contributed somewhere else before breaking again to 5-1. As a result, J. Choinski had the opportunity to serve for the second-set breadstick, which he succeeded (6-1) to force the deciding set.

The second-round action in the Helsinki Challenger the other day continued with Joao Fonseca, who previously nailed his first-round match against lucky loser Jelle Sels 6-2, 6-3 in an almost flawless performance, taking on Jan Choinski, who defeated qualifier Sandro Kopp 6-2, 6-1 in another solid performance. This was a notable rematch from the first round of Estoril (250), where the latter dug deep to win the said match in three sets, but this chaos would only require either of them to put the ball in play, specifically as things got more physical in this match.
J. Fonseca kicked off the match with a forehand down-the-line winner as he capitalized on J. Choinski's previous errors before breaking early to 1-0, consolidating to 2-0 right after. Somehow, his fourth-shot forehand winners created his latest break point somewhere in the next game before he doubled his break advantage to 3-0. Subsequently, the Brazilian strengthened his position with a service game hold to 4-0.
Somehow, J. Fonseca continued his dominance as he found the court, noticeably firing another fourth-shot winner to triple his break lead (5-0), thus earning him the opportunity to serve for the first-set bagel. Without any further hesitation, he fired a backhand pass to create his set point after minimizing the deficit when J. Choinski struck back, ultimately taking the first set 6-0 to assert his dominance in this match.
