apparently Nicolas has been carrying around Alex Antonitsch's grandchild in the Player's Lounge a lot this week during Kitzbühel. The two didn't know each other, but the little one was immediately "enamoured" with Nicolas and made him carry her everywhere 😂

J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran then continued their solid showing from the first set as they held their serves to 1-0, starting the next game with a forehand winner before trying to outhit R. Stepanov/T. Whiting to break early to 2-0, followed by a consolidation to 3-0 afterward even though they survived a volley winner. Somehow, the latter started putting themselves on the board by holding their serves to 3-1.
It took several more games before R. Stepanov/T. Whiting nailed an exciting net exchange with their final volley securing their 1-point lead before they held their serves to 4-2. To add, they also survived a match point made due to their +1 backhand error before holding their serves to 5-3, which meant that J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran had to serve for the match. The latter successfully did it, taking the second set 6-3 to secure their spot in tomorrow's semifinals.

At the Sevilla Challenger tournament, he was followed into the toilet by Federico Delbonis, who informed officials of his opponent's unauthorized shower break, resulting in the elimination from the competition.
"This has nothing to do with the tournament or its incredible organization throughout the week."
The second set had lasted one hour and 21 minutes on a hot afternoon in Spain before the toilet break. A video taken at the time of the incident on the clay court shows Delbonis waiting for his opponent before an official approaches the umpire with some information.
The umpire then declares a default, giving Delbonis the match. Alboran returns to the court and is seen discussing the decision with his opponent and the umpire before Delbonis leaves.

Sealing the day while catching up with the crazy backlog due to rain was the doubles match between Javier Barranco Cosano/Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who stunned first seeds Orlando Luz/Marcelo Zormann 7-6(4), 7-6(4) earlier as N. Moreno de Alboran's singles quarterfinal match concluded, and Roy Stepanov/Tennyson Whiting, who advanced due to wild cards Cezar Cretu/Dan Alexandru Tomescu's withdrawal. This match turned out to be an exciting one, with several exchanges of breaks before the tie-breaker likely determined the flow.
To start, after 2 smooth consecutive holds, J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran scored a working backhand lob before a failed smash somewhere from R. Stepanov/T. Whiting, as well as a double fault, did not help, except for the former pair to break 2-1. However, the latter pair's swift and anticipative returns allowed them to break back to 2-2, and they maintained the level of play with a service game hold to 3-2.
It took two more games before J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran started the next game with a working smash 2 points into that game while capitalizing on R. Stepanov/T. Whiting's previous double fault that secured the earlier lead, with another failed smash becoming a concern before breaking to 4-3 only to be broken back (4-4) due to an erratic service game moments after the latter pair's more successful smash. After two service game holds, the tie-breaker then became inevitable.
R. Stepanov/T. Whiting's earlier double fault then set up J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran's 1-point lead before an unreturned serve secured their earlier service game hold to 2-0. With some swift returns, the latter maintained the lead while the former's double faults midway also did not help. To top it off, J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran took the first set 7-6(0) by serving an unreturned serve, completing the tie-bagel to set themselves ahead in this match.

Rome (Italy) Ch QF: Vilius Gaubas def. Nicolas Moreno de Alboran [2] 6-3, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Gaubas appeared more confident in his groundstrokes as he tried to bring Moreno de Alboran off-balance, aiming after most of the latter's forehands in the critical moments. This way, in addition of adding more pace to his shots, also contributed to most of Gaubas' break points at 7, converting 2 of them within both sets, and even though Moreno de Alboran had a break point somewhere, most of the flow were in Gaubas' racquet.
Besides, Gaubas also appeared solid in his service games. Scoring one more ace than Moreno de Alboran (4 to 3), Gaubas had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 82%, 9% more than the American second seed as he avoided most troubles within both sets. However, second serves became Moreno de Alboran's most vulnerable point as he won 13% fewer points than Gaubas despite the latter double-faulting thrice, signifying the paying off risks throughout the match.
Unfortunately, unless Tristan Boyer wins the Savannah Challenger title, this could be it for Moreno de Alboran's USTA Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge this year. On the other hand, for Gaubas, who turned out to reach his maiden Challenger semifinal (after last week's quarterfinal in Oeiras 3), he will face eighth seed Hugo Dellien, who simultaneously defeated Billy Harris 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 after a slow start in the first set as he steadied things up starting afresh in the second set. Should be an interesting match that will test most of their aggressive plays!

Even though both players had their fair chances earlier in the set, four consecutive holds managed to be scored before Moreno de Alboran's forehand errors became prevalent. This way, the latter's +1 forehand error opened the path for Gaubas to create his break point in a similar way (due to the second seed's forehand error), but it was still saved before he came up with a cross-court forehand winner to secure his second one. This was proven to be successful as Moreno de Alboran got pressed, thus the Lithuanian broke to 3-2 as a consequence of Moreno de Alboran's preceding forehand error.
Since then, Gaubas had not looked back and trusted his groundstrokes more, surviving a double fault to began the next game before consolidating his lead to 4-2. He then earned his chance to serve for the match in the tenth game after several consecutive holds, where despite surviving a match point save due to an unforced error, he still managed to take the second set 6-4, securing his spot in the semifinals to close the day.

Meanwhile, in Rome (Italy)'s neighboring court...
The match between Vilius Gaubas, who previously stunned Matteo Martineau 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round, and second seed Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who stayed alive in his Roland Garros/French Open main draw wild card quest (USTA path) as he defeated Franco Agamenone 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a rollercoaster match. Although this match could have been expected as a fruitful encounter, this turned out to be slightly straightforward for numerous reasons.
Right in the second game, Gaubas already struck Moreno de Alboran's baseline game as he fired his forehand down-the-line finish for an equalizing point before breaking 2 games later thanks to his other forehand winner (2-0). This was followed by a service game consolidation from the unseeded Lithuanian despite having to survive several deficits beforehand (3-0), and he had not looked back since as he controlled the flow.
It took several games later before Gaubas earned his chance to serve for the first set, where even though his set point was previously saved due to a double fault, he successfully put himself ahead in this match once again as his forehands went after Moreno de Alboran's more vulnerable shots. This way, Gaubas managed to take the first set 6-3 to set himself a set away, technically, from the semifinals.

Rome (Italy) Ch R2: Nicolas Moreno de Alboran [2] def. Franco Agamenone 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Agamenone had an aggressive start to the first set as he tried to overpower Moreno de Alboran as evident in him breaking for the first set, but it was not the case as the latter started to appear more aggressive, even became flawless in the third set as his instinctive volleys and point construction helped him to navigate Agamenone's baseline approaches. This assisted him in generating 4 more break points than the Italian (13 to 9), converting 38% of his break points, 3 of which came from the third set with 2 coming from the second set.
Besides, Moreno de Alboran appeared more consistent in his serves despite both players having their own second serve chaos. In this case, the American second seed served 4 aces, most of which to avoid further troubles as he had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 75%, 15% more than Agamenone as the match progressed. On the other hand, the latter double-faulted three times than Moreno de Alboran's 2, thus fading his second serve winning percentage 3% below Moreno de Alboran at 37% that made his second serves more vulnerable.
To strengthen his case in the last week of the USTA Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge this year, Moreno de Alboran will face a talented youngster in Vilius Gaubas, who defeated Matteo Martineau 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a classic second-round encounter. Should be an intriguing test of their aggression and balance of power, and it all could come down to the pressure points to determine who proceeds to the next round. A fun one to close the day with, even!

The third set became a one-way affair as Moreno de Alboran maintained his aggression in the third set, appearing almost flawless as Agamenone ran out of answers as the set progressed. In this case, the former started the third game with a successful drop shot, which won him the point after he won the backhand down-the-line pass for the preceding equalizer before an unforced error resulted in Moreno de Alboran's break of serve to 3-1. This was followed by the second set's hold of serve to 4-1.
Somehow, Moreno de Alboran continued this form as he passed his backhand in response to Agamenone's drop shot to secure his one-point lead before another intuitive volley prevented Agamenone's possible other pass, thus securing his 2-point lead before doubling the break to 5-1. This allowed Moreno de Alboran to serve for the match, which he eventually did to secure the third-set breadstick to 6-1, as well as securing his spot in the quarterfinals.
