Usopp and Luffy
I wonder if when Usopp and Luffy argue post-Water 7, Luffy has to hold back because he’s afraid Usopp will leave again. Same for Usopp (but I’d think he’d just lock himself in his workshop all day to cool off).
Tumblr media
Usopp has a fiery temper, and Luffy’s bull-headed.
Hence their zodiac signs (Aries and Taurus) and they’re so alike but different.

I've never particularly blamed either side in the Luffy vs Usopp conflict because both have their reasons, but I greatly sympathize with Usopp's pain.
Something I noticed is Usopp's line in Water 7, which depending on the translation, has two different meanings.
"cut off useless friends TO move on" vs "cut off useless friends AND move on"
Tumblr media
The manga implies cutting off the "useless" becomes the requirement for moving on. So unless you discard whatever is weighing you down, progress is impossible.
Tumblr media
While the anime suggests removing whatever/whoever is deemed useless and then as an independent action, moving forward. This makes it feel almost too easy, like they're just cutting things off with little emotional attachment or any real struggle.
The manga feels more accurate to me because the crew had no choice but to leave Merry behind, it was a painful necessity and something they had to do to move forward.
Usopp knew better than anyone that the Merry was alive, she would be aware of the crew leaving her behind. On top of that his own insecurities made it even worse, so I completely understand his actions.

I may be upset, but I still appreciate mom Zoro telling Chopper and (I think) Nami to go to their rooms

Going Merry Holidays 2024 (day 3): Luffy vs Usopp - Tide
This amv was about Luffy vs Usopp-case which was left to the to do -pile for years but now finally is done and dusted!
'The song is called "Tide" by a finnish singer Belle Who (known also as Malla Malmivaara) and pretty much describes the feelings the crew (especially Luffy and Usopp went trough in Water 7 arc).
I wrote a long-ish post about this amv so I try not to repeat too much but I really like this arc even after all these years. It was the first big crisis that almost teared the whole crew apart and really challenged not only Luffy as a captain but also rest of the crew to handle the whole thing not only as persons but also as a team.
The first verse is more from Luffy's point of view whereas the second part is more from Usopp's perspective. I've written bunch of thoughts about Usopp in my Reasons to love Mugiwaras-series (link for Usopp's part here) and I've also written a loads of thoughts about this fight and its backgrounds but shortly summarized: the fight between Luffy and Usopp was mostly about his pride. However it deeply roots on Usopp's insecurities and his feeling of being a burden (especially when he was robbed not long time ago) and of course of letting go of Going Merry (which was a gift from Kaya whom he adored a lot).
Although this fight and whole Water 7 and Enies Lobby held loads of emotional baggage and feels, it's written greatly. Oda-sensei did great and gave not only Usopp but also Robin a place to grow as characters. Usopp finally realized as a Sogeking that his unique sniping skills are something no one else from the crew holds and he therefore has a key to save Robin. Then Robin finally realized she found a family that won't abandon her no matter what and after Enies Lobby she definitely started to bloom because she knew she had a safe place she'd craved ever since she was a child.
So all in all, those two arcs deserve the hype *chef's kiss*

Understanding Usopp's Perspective in Water 7
Tumblr media
I still don't understand why people can't grasp that Usopp was only 17 years old during the Water 7 arc. People love to be "objective" and claim Usopp was wrong for challenging his captain, but Luffy wasn't entirely blameless either.
Usopp was the first to notice how unprepared everyone was for the New World, but the rest of the crew seemed in denial or overconfident. How could Usopp voice his insecurities when everyone else apparently had their act together? It felt like, "Yeah, whatever Usopp, you're just a scaredy cat," when, in reality, he was becoming more attuned to the fact that one of the strongest people he knew was starting to lose to the bad guys.
Critics say, "Usopp didn't know how to take orders from his captain," but that's not true. If Luffy was starting to lose, then how prepared were they for the New World? Usopp knew his own limitations and was unsure how to help, leading him to feel like he was losing control. He likely thought, "If everyone else has their act together, then who am I?" He channeled all that into Merry.
I believe Usopp's innate ability to sense danger started to manifest here. Luffy was overestimating himself—from the incident with Kuzan to punching Charlos.
Tumblr media
Luffy took the crew, his friends, for granted and didn't realize how much he needed them until after Marineford, when Jinbe gave him a reality check. He couldn't empathize with Usopp because he failed to understand the consequences of being unprepared and powerless. Luffy thought his confidence would be enough for everyone, but it just put them all in danger. There was still some "playing pirate" nonsense going on.
Luffy was also 17 and deserves grace, but apparently, Usopp is the outlier who brings the crew down? Yeah, right. The unconscious bias shows. The privilege shows.
Literally just read a fic where the crew can’t stop beating it into Usopp’s f*cking head how much he “sucked” back in Water 7. Smh. What message does that give? Oh, keep telling someone they suck to the point they go and find the highest building to jump off of? Tough love works…to an extent. But without empathy? Yeah. What a crock of sh*t.
Just needed to get that off my chest.

I don’t understand what this “laws of the sea” concept is all about when we can't get to the heart of the matter. Every time someone frames Water 7 and Enies Lobby as if Usopp was the only one who needed to learn a big lesson, as if he were wrong for even existing, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. To me, the laws of the sea shouldn’t apply when it comes to leaving a friend and crewmate to die. (Yes, I don't think ill ever get over that scene).
The main lesson in Water 7 wasn’t about making tough decisions for the betterment of the crew. The real lesson that Luffy should have learned from his fight with Usopp is that leadership isn’t just about strength or decision-making—it’s about understanding the people who follow you.
gif credit
Water 7 was like specifically engineered to hit on every single sensitive spot Usopp has and honestly he almost under-reacted with how nuts the circumstances were for the moment that he snapped:
1. They just came off a fight where Aokiji knocked them around like it was nothing, where he had this realization:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So he’s going in already feeling super inadequate, more than he usually does (which is a lot already).
2. Relatedly, up to this point fixing the Merry was his job because they didn’t have a shipwright yet. Her being unfixable probably felt, to him, like a personal failing because he was the one in charge of fixing her
3. The Merry was most like another crew member to him because he’s the one who worked on her most, AND he was the only one who saw her klabautermann at this point
4. The big elephant in the room here is that Kaya was the one who gave them Merry. So, you know, he’s attached to her most for this reason too
5. There’s also the fact that this probably hit on the very specific trauma of his mother’s death, because she also got sick enough that everyone deemed her unsavable.
6. On top of all that, it also hit on his trauma regarding his dad and abandonment: he doesn’t want to repeat that and feel like he abandoned a crew member who needed him.
7. Speaking of abandonment, seeing a situation where, in his mind, the crew leaves someone behind who is now deemed useless probably touched on a lot of his own fears about his place on his crew and own perceived usefulness
8. He had also just been brutally beaten twice on the same day and is pretty badly injured, compounding both feelings of usefulness and aligning him with the merry in his mind in terms of physical state.
9. He had also just lost the money they needed to fix the Merry, again compounding the feeling that he was useless AND he was responsible for the Merry not being fixable
10. He woke up to the crew, who had already processed the news, telling him about it AND that a decision had been made, which made him feel like it was a him vs them thing
There’s probably more I think but yes, it is completely unsurprising that he fell apart so spectacularly

At this point, any book I read makes me think of Usopp. And this time it results in another Water 7 point I want to make
Tumblr media
I understand that One Piece is a shonen series, so certain themes are expected. But when I reflect on Usopp's struggles during Water 7, it bothers me how people still defend Zoro’s words as if they were absolute. Zoro’s beliefs weren’t entirely safe or right. Water 7 touched heavily on themes of manhood, which many Usopp fans have pointed out, especially regarding his relationship with Franky. But when you dig deeper, Usopp deserves more grace and consideration.
Despite what Sanji and Franky did for him, it wasn’t enough. Usopp didn’t have a father figure to help him build the self-confidence every boy—or anyone—needs. Sons often get their self-confidence from their fathers, and without that, Usopp was left to suppress his emotions and internalize his pain. So when people in the fandom argue that Usopp was wrong and shouldn’t have let his “pride” get in the way, it feels unfair. It goes back to the issue of suppressed emotions, which is incredibly damaging without a positive outlet—a skill Usopp was never taught or able to explore.
I also think Usopp might’ve learned the wrong lesson from Water 7, especially when the fandom considers what was “right” as actually being morally wrong. I came across someone’s interpretation of Usopp’s fight with Luffy, and while I didn’t agree with most of their negativity, I did see their point about the “might is always right” mentality that Zoro seemed to push. This mentality, according to the commenter, stripped Usopp of the little confidence he had left by Water 7, along with the autonomy and moral compass that were truly his own, even if they were chaotic and unconventional.
So it really bothers me when people view Usopp’s stance as disloyalty. In reality, it showed that he wasn’t willing to blindly follow others—he believed everyone deserved an explanation, including himself. In that light, Usopp’s apology after Enies Lobby feels underserved because it doesn’t validate the struggles he went through or extend beyond the surface-level support he received before.

I think we as a people deserve to see Usopp and Buggy in the ring, that would be the true event of the Strawhat x Cross Guild Davy back fight.
Their round would be about who could tell the most outrageous lie that would allow them to trip and fall upwards in life. And never before would we have seen two titans of their field go head to head like this.
