Moonstones Are Not Durable: An Essay by Me
I have read so many fics in which Tim proposes with a ring with moonstones on it — or even THE moonstone ring — and I just need to say something about it. I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but I regret to inform the Chenford fandom that a moonstone would make a terrible engagement ring.
But what about the symbolism?? you say. I know! It's disappointing! But hear my words.
There's a reason diamonds are popular for engagement rings. Yes, there's the massive marketing campaign by De Beers, that's true. But it's also because they're hard as fuck, meaning they do not scratch easily when you're using your hands for daily tasks, like reaching into pockets, picking things up, writing, typing, etc. On what is called the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, diamonds are rated 10/10, well above any other stone.
A moonstone, on the other hand, rates a 6 or 6.5. Anything below a 7 or 8 is not recommended for an engagement ring, due to how constantly it would be exposed to wear and tear.
You could definitely make the argument that, since Lucy wouldn't be able to wear her engagement ring at work, that's essentially 12 hours a day her ring would not be exposed to danger. But for a ring worn daily that's supposed to symbolize everlasting commitment and whatnot, I would think it's best to get something that's not going to get scratched to shit sooner rather than later. It would make more sense to get her a ring with a harder gemstone.
I can definitely see Lucy wanting a less traditional gemstone, like an emerald (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) or a sapphire (9). Maybe a diamond! No idea. But I'm sorry: not a moonstone.
This post is brought to you by four years of being immersed in subreddits dedicated to weddings and engagement rings and the dozens of posts I saw on them advising against moonstone engagement rings. (Also, my persistent need to be pedantic.)
#chenford#lucy's moonstone ring#the more you know#absolutely no shade to anyone who has written a fic with a moonstone engagement ring#i still love you and your writing#i am just a pedant who wanted to speak my truth#trigger warning: pedantry#my posts

chenford prompts/ideas
I hope it's okay to just throw prompts out like this. I'm still very new to this fandom but very invested in Chenford (being caught up with a show is the worst, why do I fall in love with these types of ships until I know how it ends?), so much so I dusted out an old tumblr account and posted a ramble on ao3. I'm down bad for these clueless fictional idiots. * What if Armstrong didn't take Caleb's deal in 2x11? As in, he arrests Caleb instead of going with him. It wouldn't change them finding Lucy, I don't think, but could give some very nice (and by that I mean angsty af) interactions between Caleb and the others. Namely Tim, of course. * Tim is the one who goes to the prison with Nolan, so he's the one who goes with Nolan to the house to confront Caleb. Does Caleb still die in the same way? Does he live? Does Tim have to sit and watch the video feed for those agonising seconds while he waits for the rest of the team to touch down, after realising Lucy isn't in the barrel in the house? * What if Tim didn't give Lucy the 'Bradford special' back in 1x09, and she still gets shot? Any excuse for feral/protective Tim, especially since he'd be even more feral after Isabel's shooting. * What if, to help Jackson, Lucy offers to switch places and become's Stanton's rookie for that last month. What's the worst that could happen? * Lucy is exposed in 1x20 instead of Tim. * Lucy has serious thoughts about breaking the door down in 1x20 when Tim is attacked * Both Tim and Lucy are exposed in 1x20 and have to quarantine together * Not so much Chenford, though obviously Chenford, but just people supporting Lucy after Jackson's death. Give Lucy all the hugs please. * One of those 5 times fics but revolving around Lucy's moonstone ring. * Lucy gets greenlit instead of Nolan * Tim helping Lucy to wash her hair after she'd been injured in some way. Not sexual, not necessarily platonic, just helping. Either as friends or established lovers, post break-up or pre. Even a fully clothed over the basin 'don't expect me to dry it too, Boot' because he felt guilty. I just love a good bit of non-sexual TLC sometimes. * Honestly, same as above but with Jackson. So definitely platonic but just something sweet and soft. Lucy needs TLC, okay? I have feelings about this. * Overprotective (not necessarily 'I have feelings for her' but, ya know, we love a clueless Tim) Tim looking out for Lucy (in that weird way of his) with some of the more asshole officers/civilians they meet through her training/time as P2. Especially if she pisses off an asshole cop (akin to Stanton. If not Stanton. We hate Stanton) for some mundane reason, and Tim has to have her back when it escalates. * Lucy accidentally pisses off a very high ranking criminal. Cue everyone protecting Lucy even though she doesn't need protecting. * Tim and Lucy chat after the Stanton confrontation. * Lucy's ill or mildly injured but pushes through/stays in work. Tim keeps pushing her and she makes a mistake and/or gets hurt. Angela, Bishop, Harper, or Grey talk with him, and make him realise he has to know when to stop pushing sometimes. * Lucy's had a particularly bad day with some shitty criminals/civilians/officers. Tim thinks he gets it but he can't, not really, so his brand of tough love isn't working as he wants it to. Lopez/Harper/Bishop and/or even Lucy try to get him to understand he'll never understand what it's like to be a woman (and one of colour) on patrol. * Lopez/Harper/Bishop etc take Lucy out after said bad day. Tim can be there with Nolan if he wants. Jackson too. Jackson gets it more but everyone needs to hear how difficult it can be. Mainly ladies supporting ladies. * And if anyone wants to take a proper shot at the long-form disjointed ramble fic I did, or take ideas from it, please do. Basically post-break up, Lucy's in a bad place and Tim goes to comfort her and I have a lot of feelings about Jackson being gone and Lucy not having the support network she should with Tim and Tamara leaving her - ao3 ramble here
That should be it for now, at least while I keep working through episodes properly (also, ugh, watching these early episodes with Nolan/Lucy stuff is just...ick after binging all the Chenford stuff first ^_^). Thank you to anyone who takes these, you're a very talented fandom with some gorgeous writers! I'm working my way through Chenford fics on ao3, but if any of these have been done before please spread the love and share some links/reccs <3

Six(ish) Sentence Saturday (or Monday...)
Honestly, I just liked how this segment came together, so I thought I'd share.
Lucy’s eyes widened, and she gasped as she looked at her oval moonstone ring. That was another item that she could neither wear nor discard. There were too many memories tied to that ring. It was her favorite ring long before she ever met Caleb Wright. Then, after the ring was instrumental in her discovery and rescue, it was a reminder that she was a survivor. But she hadn’t been able to wear it ever since Tim left because the ring was also a reminder of who saved her and helped her recover from her trauma and always had her back.
Until he didn’t.
Until he couldn’t.
Until he was gone.
I hope to finish up this chapter tonight. Maybe I'll even have time to get it edited and posted. It's another long one. Sorry if that doesn't appeal to you. It's how I roll lately.
Also, as an FYI, after receiving a decent amount of hateful/rude comments and asks, I've turned off my asks. I'm still happy to get prompts and other various asks if you can be kind - just send them as a message instead of an ask. Thanks.

Tim allowed himself a quick laugh, tightening his grip around Lucy’s waist, and imagining the sparkle of her moonstone ring on the fingers gently combing through the hairs on the back of his head. She leaned closer to him, her cheek resting just above the collar of his dress shirt, and he pushed away the thoughts, dark and intrusive, of what his life would be like if he hadn’t found that ring. If she hadn’t thought to drop it for him. If the trust between them wasn’t so strong, so unshakeable, that it kept her believing he’d come for her, even as her own breath slowly started to poison her and the sun sank low over the endless, barren desert, leaving him chasing the shadows of his own fear.

chenford fic as well. fairytale au.
I swear your other prompt is on the way I just hated what I wrote for it and had to start fresh. Stand by and enjoy this little story that was inspired by a concept @singswan-springswan brought up like a year ago and it never really left my head:
“You sacrificed yourself.” The beast’s voice is surprisingly human, and Lucy wondered what he looked like without shadows shrouding his features. “Why?”
“Nolan’s my friend,” Lucy told him, breathing deeply. Trying to ease her pounding heart. “And he has a son, and the woman he’s courting— she’s lost enough already.”
“So you volunteered to face the monster for him.”
“Well, I’m part of the guard, too.” Lucy took another deep breath, memories flickering through her head— hot sun, sand underfoot. The last moment before the barrel was latched shut and she was completely, totally trapped. “Besides, I’ve faced monsters before. You’re actually kind of tame in comparison.”
“Is that so?” Either Lucy was crazy, or the beast actually sounded… amused? What did I get myself into?
~~~
It was her. Even if he hadn’t had the memory of her dark wavy hair imprinted in his brain, he recognized her scent. The flowery perfume with a hint of vanilla, the same sword oil that he’d used when he was part of the guard a long, long time ago. And fear, but not as strong as when he’d found her in that barrel.
That had been the craziest thing he’d ever done. He’d known the consequences if he’d been caught by the villagers and the guardsmen hunting for her. But she’d been right there. He’d seen the ring she left behind as a sign, and smelled both her scent and the scent of her kidnapper.
He couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. Not even when he was under a curse.
So he’d dug, bloodying and breaking his claws, and he’d pulled her out. Brought her back, stayed with her, and when he finally heard people approaching, ran for it.
It was only afterwards that he realized he still had the ring— moonstone in a silver band. He wondered if he should give it back to her.
Right now, he had bigger issues. “You’re a member of the guard,” he said, studying her intently. “Does that mean you’re here to kill me? I know there are plenty who’d like to, if they believed I existed.”
“No,” she said, and he believed her. “I’m here to pay Nolan’s debt, not fight. As long as you aren’t planning to eat me.”
She was brave— cocky, almost, saying that without a quiver in her voice. He almost grinned. “I don’t eat humans.”
“Then I won’t try to kill you.”
“Good enough.”
Hear me out: Lucy didn’t wear the moonstone ring in either date with Tim, because she didn’t need it for protection or safety. Tim was there with her, so Lucy knew she was protected and she knew she’d be safe with him.
Married chenford talk about their relationship
Married chenford talk about their relationship
Chenford + Ashley was an distraction for my feelings for you!
This is fluffy, fluff and more fluffiness. And there’s a surprise at the end 🥰
And we'll build this love from the ground up Now 'til forever it's all of me, all of you
“Hey.” Says Tim climbing into bed. “How do you feel?” Lucy shrugs and places a hand on her stomach. She’s just starting to show and she is still having morning sickness. All day.
“I just wish it would go away.” She says. She leans her head on his shoulder and he kisses the top of her head softly.
“Did you ever think we would be here?” She asks quietly. Tim turns to look at her a questioning look on his face.
“What do you mean?” Tim asks her curiously. Lucy sighs and lifts her head up and turns to face him.
“Us. Married. Having our first baby. Thriving in our careers.” Lucy says playing with the blanket. “Did you ever picture it this way?”
Tim thinks about that for a moment because once upon a time he pictured this life with Isabel before it fell apart. But then Lucy crashed into his life and wormed her way into his heart and his whole world changed.
He never thought he would actually have this after Isabel. He just thought it was some pipe dream.
“Honestly?” He says turning to look at Lucy. “I didn’t think I would ever have this. I thought after Isabel it wouldn’t be possible.” Lucy smiles at him and he reaches for his hand. He squeezes it and then brings it up to his lips so he can kiss it.
“What changed?” Lucy asks him. He leans forward and gives her a small kiss.
“You.” He says softly. “You changed everything for me Lucy.”
She smiles at him again and cuddles closer to him but she doesn’t say anything she just looks at him waiting for him to continue.
“I know we had a rocky start. I know I was a hard ass. I know I made you.. frustrated.” He says.
“You were definitely a pain in my ass.” Lucy says teasingly. “You still are.”
Tim rolls his eyes at her. “And you are a menace.” He says kissing her nose. “Anyway. Despite our rocky start you still managed to help me. You got me out of a dark place.”
“I didn’t—” She starts but Tim shakes his head.
“You did baby. Despite how annoyed I was when you came to Isabel’s apartment. It opened my eyes a little.”
“I’m glad.” She whispers. He kisses her again and then pulls back.
“And then when you didn’t put in the report what I said at the quarantine house.” Tim says.
“I was trying to protect you Tim. I just didn’t.. but I was also terrified you were going to die. I-I even then you were important.”
“I know.” Says Tim. “I know. I was a jerk.” Lucy reaches out to cup his face.
“It’s okay.” She says. “I understand where you were coming from.”
“Yeah.” He whispers. He lowers his hand to her stomach and then closes his eyes for a moment before opening them.
“Caleb.” He says. “Caleb took you. And I felt like I—” He says and he moves his hand to where he knows her tattoo is.
“I felt like the ground was going to swallow me up.” He admits. “I wasn’t okay until you were.. saved.” Lucy closes her eyes now and runs her fingers through his hair.
“I love you.” She says quietly. He smiles and then goes down and kisses her belly softly and breathes her in. Thanking the heavens she was here with him, carrying their first baby. If she hasn’t left her ring out…
“I love you too.” He whispers into her skin. “I’m so glad you are here.” She pulls him back up and then looks at him waiting for him to continue.
“And then the aftermath of Caleb, god Lucy.” He reaches over and grabs her moonstone ring and holds it in between his fingers.
“You brought me back to life.” She says. “And that day when you gave me the ring back.. it felt like I started living again.”
“I’m glad.” He mumbles. There is a long silence and then Lucy talks this time. Her voice low and a little sad.
“You helped me after Jackson.” She says. “You being there really helped me, more than you will ever know.”
Tim smiles sadly at the memory and tugs Lucy closer. “Jackson would be so proud of you Luce. And happy for you. Maybe not about me.” Tim says and Lucy chuckles.
“I don’t think he would be surprised.” She says. “The way you looked at me at Angela’s non-wedding..”
Tim smirks. “You looked beautiful. I mean it Luce. I really wanted that dance.” He says.
“You didn’t look too bad yourself Bradford.” She says.
Tim smiles at her. “You helped me with my dad and the house. I will forever be grateful for that.” He says. “It was nice having you there. Even if you called me an idiot.”
“I’m glad I was there.” Says Lucy. “You know I still need to bug Genny for stories when you were younger. I have a few but..”
Tim just shakes his head at her. “What going to tell our kid all my embarrassing stories?” He asks her teasingly.
She gives him a smirk. “I already have been.” She says.
“Well good thing your aunt Amy loves me because I have a few embarrassing stories of you.” He retorts back.
“Like the double date?” She asks. He blanches at just the mere mention of that night.
“More like Gerald.” He says. She shakes her head and throws one leg over his leg to pull him closer.
“That night was interesting.” She says.
“I’m surprised Ashley didn’t break up with me then.” He says. “I spent the whole night focused on you.”
“I did too.” Says Lucy. “And I was with Chris for almost a year after that?” Tim grimaces at her ex boyfriend’s name.
“To be fair, I didn’t realize how I felt about you yet.” She says. “Did you?”
Tim shakes his head. “No.” He says softly. “I didn’t. I think they was something but I didn’t know what.”
Lucy nods in understanding. “And then you said you—did you want to marry Ashley?” She asks a little shyly looking away from him.
Tim turns her back towards him. “No baby. I mean at the time.. in that moment but no I didn’t actually want to marry her.”
“At all? You didn’t picture blonde haired, blue eyed babies running around you.” Lucy asks.
Tim sighs and runs his fingers through his hair. “I don’t know Luce. I mean she told me she didn’t even want to get married or have kids. And after that I just knew. I just knew our relationship wasn’t going anywhere.”
“Then why did you stay with her? Why did you “propose to her?” Lucy asks. “I know it was a joke but—”
“Because after that she was just a distraction Lucy. Because after the kiss in your apartment.. I just knew.”
“Oh.” Says Lucy softly. “I-I didn’t. I thought after we danced at Nyla’s wedding things had changed.”
Tim sighs. “It was stupid. But for the record baby, I meant every word I said at the wedding. Just because I was an idiot and did that stupid prank doesn’t mean I didn’t mean every word. You deserved, you deserve to be recognized.”
“I know you meant it Tim.” Lucy says quietly. “I was being annoying that day. I kept pushing you.”
“It’s okay.” Tim sighs. “You cared about me. Lucy nods and lays her head on his chest.
“The kiss.” She says. “That’s when you realized your feelings for me?” He shrugs his shoulders and combs his fingers through her hair.
“More or less. It was more like a wake up call for me.” He admits. “But then the airplane kiss happened and then you said it was basic biology.”
“I’m sorry.” She says closing her eyes. “I was confused.”
“I was too.” Tim says and she opens her eyes to look at him, he’s looking at her with such love and adoration. And she really hopes their baby gets his eyes, because staring into his eyes makes her feel safe and loved. “I didn’t know what to do after that. And then Chris. And UC school. It was all a lot.”
“I know.” Says Lucy. “Can I tell you something?”
“Of course.” He says. She swallows and looks up at him again. She feels safe and secure in her relationship with Tim now. But back then…
“I was heartbroken when you told me to move on.” She says softly. “Watching you walk away killed me.”
Tim let’s out a big breath. “I was looking out for you.” He says. “I was Luce. You meant the world to me. I didn’t want to get in the way.”
She nods and closes her eyes again. “I get it.” She says. “We both were in relationships and we almost..”
“But we didn’t.” He says repeating his words from that night. “We didn’t.”
“No matter how much we wanted to. I’m glad we didn’t. I like how we got together much better.” Lucy asks.
He smiles and kisses her. “Me too. It worked out so much better.” He says. She nods in agreement.
“And then.. Ashley broke up with you.” She says.
“Yep. And you took my radio hostage.” He says smiling.
“And you stole the idea from me. And led me on a wild goose chase to find my radio.” She says and she leans on her elbows so she can look at him.
“To propose to you.” He says. “I think mine had a better outcome.” He plays with her fingers.
“Oh it did.” She agrees. “Even if I was pissed at you the whole day.”
Tim let’s put a chuckle. “Worth it.” He says bringing her ring finger up to kiss it. “And you didn’t leave with another man.”
She smiles. “It was worth it. All the bumps, all the heartache.” She says. “It led us here.”
He puts his hand on her belly again. “It led us to our happily ever after.”
“It did.” She agrees and there’s a long silence before she speaks again. “I actually have something for you.”
He looks at her curiously and she climbs out of bed and goes to their closet and digs through it. She pulls out a small bag, and comes back over and hands it to him.
He looks up at her. “What is this?” He asks. She smiles and motions for him to open it.
“Open it and you will see.” She says. He sighs but he takes the tissue paper out and reaches it and pulls out a tiny pink onesie. He looks up at her and she bites her lip.
“There’s more.” She whispers her eyes filling with tears as he clutches the onesie. He feels like his heart is about to burst open. He reaches in again and pulls out a bear with a pink shirt on it and on the back says Bradford.
“Lucy.” He says clutching the bear in his hands. Are— we— are we having a girl?” He asks and she nods.
“I found out a week ago. I wanted to do something special and I was just waiting to get that shirt in.” She says her voice shaky.
Tim pulls her in and brings her down so she is on top of him and he squeezes her. “My girls.” He whispers. “My girls.”
Lucy let’s out a sob laugh and hugs him tightly too and peppers him with kisses.
“Your girls love you very much.” She says. Tim hugs her as close as possible and then she rolls off looking at him.
“You are going to be such a good dad.” She says softly. “Our little girl is so lucky to have you as a dad.”
He leans over to kiss her on the cheek. “And so so lucky to have you as a mom.” He says against her cheek.
He then goes down to her belly where their daughter grows and sleeps. “I love you baby girl.” He whispers. “Goodnight.”
Lucy pulls him back and kisses him softly. “Goodnight.” She whispers and he watches as she slowly closes her eyes. He does the same pulling Lucy close. And this is all he needs right now. Just him and his girls.
Love Me In Small Doses – Chapter 16: The Moonstone
“Why?” Celina asks, unsure. “No offense, but it’s just a ring. I’m sure Lucy is sad, but what’s with the whole wellness check?” Nolan starts with, “It’s the ring that Tim—” “The ring saved her life,” he interrupts sharply.
What if like, what if Lucy stops wearing that moonstone ring?
She's going to stop wearing the necklace Tim got her I'm sure, but if she doesn't it's going to break my heart even more.
But what will really get me is that moonstone ring, I'm sure it reminds her of Tim, and wearing it hurts.
It’s finally here! Tim and Lucy are finally going to see each other for the first time in forever in the next chapter of my story, Worth the Wait.
A few minutes later, as Aly and Lily were explaining every last piece of artwork on that particular segment of the wall with excruciating detail, Tim’s ears heard something that he never thought he’d hear again. Laughter. But not just any laughter. The joyful, melodic, and sometimes even boisterous laughter of Lucy Chen. He immediately recognized it, even though it had been over seven years since he’d heard it in person. He looked to his right and saw just a few feet away from him the woman he never thought he would see again, at least not outside of his dreams.
His hands dropped to his sides as he turned his whole body toward her in complete shock.
“Lucy?” Tim said, his voice an octave higher than normal as his mouth hung open with his eyes as wide as saucers.
“Tim?” Lucy said breathlessly, as though the sight of him had knocked the wind out of her.
They stared at each other for a moment. Tim allowed his eyes to roam down from Lucy’s face to examine the rest of her. He felt like his mind was transported back in time to nine years ago. She was wearing, as far as he could tell, the same gorgeous green dress she had worn to Angela’s almost-wedding, and she didn’t look like she had aged a single day. She still wore her hair long and wavy, just like he remembered it. Time had done nothing to dim her beauty. His breath caught at the sight of her moonstone ring on her right hand that had led him to her in the desert so many years ago. To his surprise, he did not see a wedding ring on her left hand; there was just a stripe of untanned skin there.
Lucy felt her body warm under his intense gaze until her cheeks were a rosy pink color, but she couldn’t deny that she was checking him out in just the same way. The last seven years had surely treated him well. There were little streaks of gray hair around his temples, and his smile lines seemed a little deeper, but being away from the LAPD didn’t seem to alter his exercise routine at all as his muscles still bulged against his shirt the way they always did. Damn. That man could wear a suit better than anyone else she knew. Just like Tim, her eyes also went to his left hand where she noticed he didn’t wear any ring.
As Tim and Lucy were frozen staring at each other, Lily, Aly, and Sam exchanged victorious smiles and all-knowing nods.
“We were right!” Sam said, standing behind Lucy by a step and looking at Aly and Lily triumphantly. “That’s exactly how she says his name in her sleep! Like she just finished exercising, and she’s out of breath.” He paused for half a beat. “Well sometimes she screams it, too…” he continued.
“Sam!” Lucy said, her face quickly flushing to a beet red color. She grabbed him by the shoulder. “How do you know about…”
“You talk in your sleep a lot, Mom. And Tamara says…”
“Okay. Okay. Enough,” she interrupted him. “You’ve said more than enough,” she said patting him on the back as she cleared her throat. Lucy dared to glance over at Tim whose shock had morphed into several different micro-expressions, including confusion, surprise, and smugness, until it settled into a slightly amused expression with his lips pulled in tight, trying not to smile.
“Excuse me. I just… I… I’ll be back in a bit,” Lucy whispered as she glanced back at Sam and then Tim and the two girls that must be his daughters. Then she turned and started walking to escape to the nearest bathroom, planning to text Tamara to find Sam and watch after him. After everything that had happened to her over the last week with memories of Tim surrounding her and then Sam’s confession that she dreamt about Tim… it… it was just too much. She needed to escape for a minute to compose herself.
He gave a small shake of the head, raising his hand from her waist to her neck, and he brushed his lips against her forehead again, steadying himself with her warmth, her fragrance, and her proximity. She was here. She was here. She was here, and she was safe and they were surrounded by support and love, and that was all that mattered.
