[ summer bishil / cis woman / 28 ] ❛ from over the ocean far lucía mendoza has come from the curse of atlantis to sail upon the fortuna. LUCÍA is known as the icarian on board, fitting considering they are quite sharp & audacious. Supposedly that’s why the captain chose HER to be her gunner. ❜
( tw: death, kidnapping, indentured servitude implication )
i. aditi kanwar is meant for a gilded life, but fate deals her a wretched hand instead. kidnapped from a port city in hindustan by portuguese merchants, she goes into the hands of the spanish, and from there to a spanish landowner in veracruz. they strip of her name and her beliefs, her language and her identity; they baptize her maria elena juárez and think they are doing her a favor.
ii. with the landowner’s death some years later comes her emancipation, and she marries a mexican fisherman who treats her as if she holds all the stars in the sky. they have one daughter, lucía violeta, and they are content. maria elena never talks much about her life before lucía and her father, but lucía has gleaned this: her mother was the daughter of mughal nobility, and too much was stolen from her. piracy, in a way, is orchestrating revenge for her mother against her captors.
iii. wealth is most often in the hands of those with power and privilege, and lucía’s family has neither. she feels this is unjust — they could have more, they could be rich, but the ruling spaniards of new spain will not let them. how dare they decide some are lesser than others? perhaps if she’d stayed, she would have joined a rebellion, but fate leads her to the sea instead.
iv. when both her parents die within a few years of each other ( her mother from illness and her father from drink and grief ), lucía goes to live with her aunt. she doesn’t stay for long — she’s more a servant there than an adopted daughter — but she doesn’t marry to be free of them, either. she meets a sailor at the docks of veracruz, a young, idealistic captain-in-the-making. she’s half in love with him, more in love with the sea, and enamored with the idea of escape; just days before her eighteenth birthday, she leaves everything she knows behind to join him. she learns he’s a pirate once they’re far from shore, but it matters little to her.
v. as the years pass, her lover becomes captain of his own vessel: the chalchiuhtlicue, named for the aztec goddess of the waters & patroness of navigation. the two and their crew wreck havoc on merchant ships from the old world, pilfering their goods and treasures for their own. when they pull into port, she’ll sometimes give to those who have less; had she chosen differently that day on the cusp of adulthood, that could’ve been her with a stagnant life and too many mouths to feed.
vi. she’s a quick study, taking well to sailing and even better to a pistol and cutlass. she makes up for her petite stature and build with agility and aim, and has learned to man a cannon with ease after years at sea. she picks up other languages, as well — aside from her mother tongue, spanish, she learns portuguese, french, and english from the mixed crew. lovely, little lucy, their navigator calls her, and lucía laughs at that. she might be a beauty, a pretty little thing, but there’s nothing lovely about her. she’s as cutthroat as her blade; the world can be merciless and the world is unfair, so she’ll make sure to strike first.
vii. an irreparable argument between her and her captain lover causes her to leave for the curse of atlantis. the separation had been coming for the past few months, and the end result is explosive. but when one chapter ends, another begins; his ship isn’t the only one. in fact, she doesn’t need him at all — only the sea, the promise of treasure, and another crew.
viii. the gleam of treasure is a temptress indeed, and lucía always looks towards bigger and better. captain biyu encompasses exactly that, with her formidable reputation and quest for something beyond their wildest dreams. with a handful of others from the atlantis crew, she’s quick to join fortuna as a gunner. ( say what you will about her loyalty, but no one can deny she’s a bold sailor, an excellent shot, and a storm in a woman. )
stats.
personality & etc
languages spoken: spanish, nahuatl, portuguese, english, french
she’s clever, but dauntless, too; she’s not one to shy away from an unknown route or the clashing of swords. her audacity had led her to foolish decisions in her youth, but she’s sharper now. shrewder. test her and you’ll find her ruthless, for if the world gave you nothing, shouldn’t you go out and take what you want for yourself?
selfish & looks out for herself first and foremost, will not hesitate to save her own ass before anyone else’s. however, if you do have her loyalty & trust, you will have someone willing to go through hell and back for you. she might not die for you, but she’ll certainly kill for you.
the sea is where she feels freest, unburdened by the shackles of societal roles and preconceived notions. she’s here for the adventure, too — the promise of discovering the unknown, of not living quietly.
vivacious and bold, has no problem striking up conversations with strangers. comes off as gregarious and open with a certain charm about her, and isn’t much for sugarcoating. says what she wants, when she wants.
highkey anti-monarchy, anti-authority, and anti-establishment.
free-spirited, chaotic neutral
here for a good time not a long time
despite her devil-may-care attitude, she’s driven, tenacious, and isn’t afraid of hard work or getting her hands dirty.
previously a gunner on atlantis, still a gunner on fortuna — it’s her niche. she’d like to be captain or have a higher position one day, but rn she’s not here for the responsibility.
plots
ride or dies

I can't help it. I have to add some because Marco is my son.
Some of this is from a Caps Lock-invested chat with Slushee so whoops
Ever since Marco starts visiting the Rivera family, a certain female cousin of Miguel's is showing signs of infatuations towards Marco. But the thing is Marco just doesn't get it. You have Rosa Rivera, the family's fusion of Mamá Imelda and Tía Victoria with a hint of Tío Berto's sass and tendency to roast in a 13-year-old body crushing on a painfully oblivious boy who is too invested in his art and hanging out with his new best friend to even notice her advances.
Although Marco doesn't notice this (until nearly a year later after a text from Miguel and this "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" moment back in his own room at three a.m. on a weekend), Miguel and Abel are in the background wondering whatever sin had they done in the past to be punished by seeing her acting all "icky and gross", as quoted by Benny and Manny who are convinced by Abel that she has "the pink bug".
He once defined love to Rosa like how Schroeder from Peanuts defined love to Lucy in "Play It Again, Charlie Brown".
No, seriously. Marco Veracruz is THAT BAD with girls (and boys who seem to admire him as well). He once greeted the girls at the plaza with the classic De La Cruz charm (a smile and a wink) but didn't notice the way they were swooning at him.
Marco loves, loves, LOVES "Loving Vincent" and other art movies or movies with unique visuals. He bought nine copies of the DVD (plus a DVD player for each DVD) for each dead member of the Rivera family and for Ernesto ("He may be a horrible person but if it weren't for him, would I be here?").
Ever since his "disgraceful" stunt, whenever he is asked to play a song, unless Miguel or anyone in the Rivera family plays along with him, he will play like a pro but also extremely robotic and stiff. And never with a smile.
Despite being awkward at first, he later feels comfortable enough to open up and talk about his problems to the Rivera family. He especially loves talking to Enrique, once even accidentally calling him "Papá" after a heartfelt talk one summer night.
He loves and hates spicy food at the same time. Thus he always has milk wherever he goes.
But since Miguel later grows a foot taller than him, Miguel ALWAYS teases him about how none of that milk went to his bones.
Marco sees Miguel as not only as a best friend but also a brother he never knew needed until their performance in camp (as seen in Sonance). Miguel entering his life is a start of a new book in Marco Veracruz's life: a life filled with the things and people that he loves to the moon and back.
Marco for the headcanon meme?
Headcanon A: [realistic] He really enjoys drawing; he has a whole collection of blank sheet music with little doodles of the things he sees on the road. When he’s enrolled in school for the first time–the autumn after his “disgraceful” music program stunt–he falls in love with his art class and, with a little goading from his maestra and Miguel, he starts pursuing it seriously. He makes friends in his class, and for the first time, he sees a possible life course that doesn’t involve music at all.
Headcanon B: [hilarious] The first time Marco plays futbol is a disaster. He trips over the ball, winds up with a mouthful of grass, and ends up breaking his nose when he tries to headbutt the ball like he’d seen on TV. And yet, when he gets to Urgent Care, he can’t stop telling the nurse taking care of his nose how he’d helped his team get a goal. No, he didn’t get the goal himself, he sucked. But he sucked so bad that it distracted the other team.
Headcanon C: [heart-crushing] Marco’s essentially his family’s main source of income. The Veracruz family has always been a family of performers, and initially Marco ran the same route the other young Veracruzes did–a cute kid in a little charro suit strumming out one of the easier De la Cruz songs. But he had an undeniable charm and easy stage presence from his first time on stage, and his parents saw an opportunity to nurture that and essentially make a second Ernesto de la Cruz.
By the time he was eight, he was the headliner for the Veracruz family Ernesto de la Cruz tribute concerts; by the time he was 10, he was a national sensation, noted for his surprisingly mature interviews and dedication to his craft. His whole life is dedicated to performing and doing his best in every performance to uphold the family name and keep them living the lifestyle they’ve become accustomed to. To say it’s a lot of stress on him is an understatement.
The year following Miguel’s announcement that Ernesto de la Cruz is a fraud is the worst year in Marco’s life. The news about de la Cruz himself doesn’t phase him–several of his cousins are De la Cruz scholars and this sort of thing’s been whispered about for ages–but he wasn’t expecting the aftermath to be so devastating. He wasn’t expecting shows to get cancelled, and he wasn’t expecting everyone to call him a fraud. He works hard, he plays better than just about anyone, and people are saying he’s a fake? People leave awful comments on his social media pages. He gets tagged in every article tearing down De la Cruz. While Brigida does her best to hide the worst letters he gets, he still knows what they say.
Liar.
Cheater.
Fake.
As if he chose this life. As if he wanted to be seen by his parents as just something shiny to put on whatever stage they could. As if he wanted to have the drawings he’s made tossed aside for another guitar lesson and the people who could have been his friends shooed away because “There’s no time for playing right now, mijo, you have to practice.”
The responsibility he’s been shouldering since he was eight years old–to perform well and make his family happy by upholding the De la Cruz legacy–is crumbling, and he feels like he’s crumbling right along with it. So, really, is it that out of line for him to hate that Rivera kid?
Headcanon D: [unrealistic, but I DO WHAT I WANT] In the unlikely event that Marco winds up cursed and in the land of the dead with the Riveras, he adores Imelda. His whole life’s full of stern women, so that aspect of her is comfortably familiar, but the unabashed love she shows her family is what he finds so wonderful about her. (He feels the same way about Elena when he visits, and after seeing her granddaughter shower the De la Cruz boy with love last Dia de Muertos, Imelda figures it’s for the best she treats him like she would a Rivera–though she notes that he is much better behaved and polite than most Riveras *cough*Miguel*cough*.)
