The Adventures of Lucy and the Magic Paintbrush
A Rainy Day Display
It was a rainy Tuesday morning, and Lucy sat by her bedroom window watching droplets race down the glass. Her little dog, Pip, was curled up on her lap, snuggled in tight. Lucy sighed. “Another boring day,” she murmured. Just as she was about to turn away, something shiny caught her eye. There, at the edge of the garden, poking out of the muddy ground, was a curious object that sparkled like a star.
Lucy’s heart skipped a beat. What could it be? She dashed outside, Pip scampering along behind her, his paws making funny little splashes in the puddles. Lucy bent down and gently tugged the object free. It was a paintbrush – not just any paintbrush, but one with a handle that shimmered with every colour of the rainbow.
The Whispering Brush
Lucy held the paintbrush tightly. It felt warm in her hand, as though it were alive. “You’re special, aren’t you?” she whispered. To her astonishment, the brush whispered back! “I am the Magic Paintbrush,” it said softly, “and I can bring your paintings to life.”
Lucy’s eyes widened. “You mean if I paint something, it will become real?” The brush seemed to nod. Excitement bubbled up inside her. She couldn’t believe her luck! Pip barked happily, wagging his tail as if he, too, knew something magical was about to happen.
Painting a Friend
Lucy hurried back inside, dripping with rainwater but too excited to care. She grabbed a piece of paper and her watercolours, her heart pounding with excitement. “What should I paint first?” she wondered aloud. She thought for a moment and then decided. “I’ll paint a friend for Pip!”
Carefully, she painted a small, fluffy cat with orange fur and bright green eyes. As soon as she finished, the Magic Paintbrush glowed. Suddenly, there was a flash of light, and the little cat hopped right off the paper! Pip barked with joy and wagged his tail furiously. The cat stretched and purred, rubbing against Lucy’s leg. “I’ll call you Ginger,” she said, giggling.
A World of Imagination
The possibilities were endless now. Lucy’s mind whirled with ideas. What else could she paint? She decided to create a world where everything was wonderful and fun. With careful strokes of the Magic Paintbrush, Lucy painted a meadow filled with colourful flowers, a sparkling river, and a bright yellow sun. As soon as the brush glowed, the scene came to life right in her bedroom! The room was suddenly filled with the scent of fresh flowers, and she could hear birds singing sweetly.
Lucy, Pip, and Ginger ran through the meadow, laughing and playing. They splashed in the river and lay on the soft grass, watching the clouds float by. Lucy felt like the happiest girl in the whole world.
The Problem with Too Much Magic
But Lucy was so excited that she forgot to think carefully about what she painted. Soon, things started to get a little out of hand. She painted a huge chocolate cake that was so big it filled half the room! Then she painted a friendly lion who loved to roar – but his roars were so loud that the windows shook. “Oops!” Lucy cried. “Maybe too much magic isn’t such a good idea.”
She looked at Pip and Ginger, who nodded wisely. The lion gave a friendly purr and padded back into the paper with a smile. The giant cake melted away, leaving behind just a small, delicious slice for Lucy to eat.
Keeping the Magic Safe
Lucy decided she needed to use the Magic Paintbrush carefully from now on. She thought about all the fun she had and how wonderful it was to bring her ideas to life. But she also knew that too much of anything, even magic, could cause trouble.
She placed the Magic Paintbrush in a special box on her shelf and smiled. “I’ll save you for the right moment,” she said. Pip barked in agreement, and Ginger purred contentedly. Lucy knew there were many more adventures ahead – and the Magic Paintbrush would be ready when she needed it most

an (incomplete) fancast of North and South characters (based on who I pictured as I read it)
Margaret Hale - Amber Anderson
Tumblr media
She’s got the regal looks, the height and mannerisms. I’ve seen people say she was too icy as Jane Fairfax, which is probably true, but on the other hand, that makes her perfect to play Margaret :)
John Thornton - Cosmo Jarvis
Tumblr media
Am I prepared to defend this choice? … no, but it suddenly came to me in a flash of inspiration. Not very conventionally attractive, but there’s something There that makes him compelling. Also, he deserves to appear in a better period drama than Persuasion.
Mr Hale - Simon Ludders
Tumblr media
He has that Sad Overwhelmed Dad energy.
Mrs Thornton - Helen Norton
Tumblr media
Heh, it rhymes. I mainly thought of her because of her role as Mrs Parker in Miss Scarlet, a similarly strong-willed and, frankly, scary lady who’ll do anything for her son.
Fanny Thornton - Lucy-Rose Leonard
Tumblr media
This is mostly because she played Fanny in The Artful Dodger, which I’d seen right before reading N&S, and my brain conflated the two.
Mr Bell - Damien Garvey
Tumblr media
That’s a huggable old man right there.
… and that’s all I’ve got so far 😅 I was going to look for people to fill all the other roles, but I don’t know a lot of actors and I didn’t want the fun little project to turn into a chore, so I’ll just post these and add more as I think of them.

How do the memories and magic of children disrupt and upRoot the histories we tell ourselves? How do children navigate spaces of oppression and liberation? How do they find joy and hope in places that were not created for them to exist? They live.
