LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Authorities in a northern Indian town imposed an indefinite curfew and ordered police to shoot violators after clashes over the construction of a Muslim seminary and a mosque left at least five people dead and more than 150 injured, officials said Friday.
The violence Thursday also led authorities to shut down internet services and schools in Haldwani, Uttarakhand state government official Chief Radha Raturi said.
The situation was brought under control with nearly 4,000 police officers rushing to the area, said police officer A.P. Anshuman. He said police were ordered to shoot protesters violating the curfew.
On Thursday, thousands of protesters tried to block government officials and police who arrived to demolish the seminary and mosque following a court order that the structures were being built on government land without local authorization, Anshuman said.
As violence escalated, police fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters using petrol bombs and stones to attack a police station and set several vehicles on fire, Anshuman said.
State police chief Abhinav Kumar said five people died in the violence. He did not give details but said no fresh violence was reported on Friday.
Government administrator Vandana Singh Chauhan over 150 police officers were injured and several people were hospitalized.
Anshuman did not say whether police fire killed the protesters. He also didn't identify the religion of the victims.
Haldwani is about 270 kilometers (170 miles) northeast of New Delhi.
Muslim groups and rights organizations have accused India’s Hindu-nationalist government of demolishing their homes and businesses in the past. Officials have defended their actions, saying they are only targeting illegal buildings, but critics call it a growing pattern of “bulldozer justice” aimed at punishing activists from minority group.
In a report released this week, Amnesty International condemned several instances of bulldozers razing Muslims’ homes, businesses and places of worship, which it said was often done under the guise of illegal encroachment and without adequate notice.
“The unlawful demolition of Muslim properties by the Indian authorities, peddled as ‘bulldozer justice’ by political leaders and media, is cruel and appalling. Such displacement and dispossession is deeply unjust, unlawful and discriminatory,” said Agnès Callamard, the rights group’s secretary general.
The group’s researchers found that between April and June 2022, authorities in five states used demolitions as punishment following incidents of communal violence or protests, and documented at least 128 demolitions during this period.
Critics and opponents have long accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of looking the other way and sometimes enabling hate speech against Muslims, who comprise 14% of India’s 1.4 billion people.
Modi’s Bhartiya Janata Party denies the accusations.

"January 22, 2024 is not merely a date in the calendar but heralds the advent of a new era," Modi said, speaking outside the temple to the Hindu deity Ram, built on grounds where a mosque stood for centuries before it was torn down in 1992 by Hindu zealots incited by members of his party.
That demolition triggered the worst religious riots since independence – killing 2,000 people, most of them Muslims – and shook the foundations of India's officially secular political order.
Tens of thousands of chanting and dancing devotees waving flags, honking horns and beating drums have converged on the northern town of Ayodhya, with roads clogged, trains packed full and the rest marching in on foot.
Few members of Ayodhya's Muslim community were seen joining the jubilant street party.
But for Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the opening of the Ram Mandir temple is a landmark moment in a decades-long campaign to align the country's governance with its majority faith.
"The Lord has made me an instrument to represent all the people of India", Modi said when he launched an 11-day ritual fast ahead of the "auspicious" opening.
Tycoons, cricketers and actors
Excitement has reached a fever pitch, with thousands of Hindu believers dancing in packed streets as giant loudspeakers blast out religious tunes.
Vijay Kumar, 18, took four days to reach the town after walking and hitchhiking 600 kilometres (370 miles).
"We just wanted to be here," Kumar said. "We just wish to see the temple before we leave."
About 2,500 musicians are expected to perform on over 100 stages for the crowds of pilgrims, desperate to see the elaborate temple, built at an estimated $240 million that the project's backers say was sourced from public donations.
The 140 kilometres (87 miles) between the town and Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow is a seemingly endless stream of billboards of blue-skinned Ram with bow and arrow – as well as of Modi and the region's chief minister, the saffron-robed Hindu monk Yogi Adityanath.
Bukesh Rajiybng, 54, travelled for three days in a jam-packed train to attend the celebration.
"It's a moment we have all dreamed of for decades," he said. "I think the people and Ram will definitely bless Modi for this."
Other attendees jetted in to the newly built international airport and will stay at a crop of hotels built to cater to the millions of pilgrims expected to visit each year.
Among the celebrity guests at the opening are Indian tycoons, former national cricket captain Virat Kohli and Bollywood titan Amitabh Bachchan.
'Death and destruction'
Modi and the BJP have sought to bring the Hindu faith to the forefront of public life since sweeping to power a decade ago.
Party luminaries regularly condemn earlier eras of Islamic rule over parts of India as a time of "slavery" when their own religion was oppressed, with Ayodhya a key plank in their narrative.
Devout Hindus believe Ram, one of the most revered Hindu gods, was born in the town more than 7,000 years ago, but that the Babri mosque was built over his birthplace by a 16th-century Muslim emperor.
The BJP played an instrumental role in public campaigning that eventually led to the mosque's demolition.
The destruction presaged the rise of the BJP and Modi as unstoppable electoral juggernauts, displacing the secularist Congress party that had governed India almost without interruption since independence from Britain.
Modi's consecration of the temple alongside Hindu priests will again project him as a defender of the faith ahead of a general election expected to begin in April.
The BJP is heavily favoured to win a third successive landslide victory, in part because of Modi's appeals to Hindu nationalism, and opposition parties are boycotting the temple ceremony, saying the event will be a thinly veiled campaign rally.
Many of India's 200 million Muslims, already anxious in a climate of increased sectarian tensions, have watched the clamour around the temple with trepidation.
Mohammed Shahid, 52, speaking to AFP last month in Ayodhya, recounted how his father was burned alive by a mob.
"For me, the temple symbolises nothing but death and destruction", he said.

"Mother-Daughter's Death More In News...": Mayawati Slams UP Government
"The 'bulldozer politics' of the BJP government is taking the lives of innocent poor people which is very tragic," Mayawati
Tumblr media
Lucknow: Taking a dig at the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, BSP chief Mayawati said the death of a mother-daughter duo during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur Dehat had garnered more attention than the recent UP Global Investors Summit-2023.
"The 'bulldozer politics' of the BJP government is taking the lives of innocent poor people which is very tragic. The government should change its anti-people approach," she said in a tweet in Hindi.
Bulldozers used for demolishing illegal buildings have been in hot discussion in the state, inviting the sobriquet of "bulldozer Baba" for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
A 45-year-old woman and her 20-year-old daughter died in a fire during an anti-encroachment drive in a village in the Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, police said.
Mayawati said the tragic incident was in the news than the 'much-publicized' global investors summit organized by the state government recently.
She asked, "How will the people benefit from such a situation?" Police have booked 39 people, including a sub-divisional magistrate, four revenue officials, a police station head, and several other cops, on murder and additional charges in the incident.

Unsung Contributions Through Inclusivity and Secularism During 200 Years of Urdu Media
Book: Ghair Muslim Sahafiyon Ki Khidmaat
Author: Suhail Anjum
Review: Wasim Ahmad Alimi
Publisher: Nomani Printing Press, Lucknow
Pages: Approximately 368
Tumblr media
Sohail Anjum’s latest literary contribution, Urdu Sahafat Ke Frogh Mein Ghair Muslim Sahafiyon Ki Khidmaat, is a monumental exploration of an overlooked yet profoundly significant subject: the contributions of non-Muslim journalists in the evolution and growth of Urdu journalism. Published with the support of the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad Memorial Committee, this book is a valuable addition to the rich historiography of Urdu journalism and is an ode to its inclusive and secular ethos. The book carries a foreword by Dr. As'ad Farooqui, whose scholarly perspective sets the tone for the narrative. With the intention of promoting the culture of buying Urdu books, I managed to own a copy of the same by ordering it online, making payment and receiving it by post to my office address. Sohail Anjum is no new to me, I have often read his columns in Daily Urdu Inquilab editions of Delhi and Patna, and his review writing was a part of my translation of Dr Anwarul Haq’s Novel in Urdu. Sohail Anjum was born and brought up in historical district, Sant Kabir Nagar of Up having the degree of master’s from the prestigious AMU. He is currently associated with Voice of America, Urdu Services.
Dr Asad Faruqui ‘s specialization is in medical journalism in India and hence he adds a valuable point in this account by “This is obvious that all the communities of India have contributed to the promotion of Urdu. According to my personal study between 1855 and 1900, nearly 24 Medical Journals were published, out of which a significant number were edited by Non-Muslim Journalists who played a pivotal role in shaping the medical discourse of the time.” (Preface, pg No.21)
The book opens with a historical overview of Urdu journalism, tracing its origins back to Jam-e-Jahan Numa, the first Urdu newspaper published in 1822. Anjum elaborates on the unique cultural and political context that nurtured the growth of Urdu journalism, from its beginnings as a vehicle for disseminating information to its later role as an instrument of socio-political change. Sohail Anjum at the end of this chapter, discusses the religious journalism as well in which he says that the narrative of religious journalism was first introduced by Britishers to promote missionaries in India, and papers like Barhmanichal Magazine was only the reaction of it.
Sohail Anjum expertly weaves the narrative of Urdu journalism’s role in India’s freedom struggle and its post-independence challenges. He sheds light on the ethical and intellectual standards that shaped this profession, emphasizing the diversity and inclusivity of voices that contributed to its legacy. Anjum’s narrative underscores how Urdu journalism became a symbol of unity and a platform for dialogue in a multicultural society.
The heart of the book lies in its exploration of the contributions made by non-Muslim journalists, who embraced Urdu as their medium of expression and activism. Anjum offers a nuanced portrayal of these individuals, presenting them not merely as journalists but as visionaries and patriots. There are more than 60 figures of Urdu Journalisms who have been identified by Anjum to help him establish his point of Non-Muslim Urdu Media persons from Hari Hardatt, Munshi Nawal Kishore, Master Ramchandra, Lala Deenanath, Lala Lajpat Roy, Munshi Daya Narayan Nigam, Sardar Deewan Singh Maftoon, Jamna Das Akhtar, Fikr Tonsi to Balraj Menra and PP Maseeh. To understand the style and the way of biographical historiography in this book I am translating the shortest sketch from the and the smart readers like you will get the sense of other heroes without going into deep:
“Pandit Mukund Ram
Pandit Mukund Ram was born in Kashmir in 1828 and passed away in 1897. Among the newspapers that gained significant prominence in Lahore during the 19th century, two stood out: Paisa Akhbar and Akhbar-e-Aam. The latter was founded by Pandit Mukund Ram himself. Before venturing into journalism, he worked as a scribe at the Koh-i-Noor, a weekly newspaper edited by Munshi Harsukh Rai, in 1847. However, Mukund Ram harbored a deep desire to establish his own printing press. This ambition led him to set up a press under the name Mitra Vilas, through which he began publishing Hindi books. His two sons, Gopi Nath and Govind Sahay, assisted him in this endeavor.
Amidst these ventures, Mukund Ram developed an interest in publishing newspapers. In 1870, he launched Huma-e-Punjab. However, a year later, in 1871, he started Akhbar-e-Aam, which went on to achieve significant popularity. This newspaper played a crucial role in elevating the standards of Urdu journalism. Pandit Mukund Ram also published a Hindi newspaper titled Mitra Vilas, which gained considerable acclaim and was published for nearly two decades. Additionally, he founded an English newspaper, People's Journal, although it was Akhbar-e-Aam that brought him enduring fame.In 1861, he also launched a monthly magazine titled Baghawat-e-Hind from Agra.” (pg No.311)
The profiles of pioneering figures such as Hari Hardat and Munshi Sadasukh Lal, to whom the book is dedicated, are particularly striking. Anjum recounts how these individuals navigated a complex socio-political landscape, using Urdu to champion the causes of equality, justice, and reform. The book highlights their unwavering commitment to the language and its ethos, which often came at a personal cost. Indeed, Urdu Journalism has a rich history in India not only in terms of language but also in uniting the people in the name of national interest and calling them together to fight against the tyrant Britishers. I personally tried to sketch the forgotten story of Molvi Baqar, the first Indian martyred journalist in my short story titled as ‘Akhond’(The highly literate) in which I have portrayed Baqar’s journalistic contributions through Delhi Urdu Akhbar and his martyrdom by the Britishers. Interestingly, the story has been narrated by his Bonafide son Shamshul Olema, Maulana Mohammad Hussain Azad.
The section titled “The Galaxy of Non-Muslim Journalists” is a treasure trove of information. It profiles stalwarts like Shanti Narayan Bhatnagar, whose work in Swarajya exemplifies courage and resilience. By documenting their lives and contributions, Anjum brings to light the secular spirit that has been a cornerstone of Urdu journalism.
One of the strengths of Anjum’s writing is its ability to balance scholarly rigor with accessibility. While the book is deeply rooted in research, it is written in a style that appeals to a wide audience, from academics to general readers. The narrative is enriched with archival material, historical anecdotes, and critical insights, making it a comprehensive resource for students and researchers of Urdu literature and journalism.
Anjum also explores the stylistic evolution of Urdu journalism, analyzing its literary richness and its role in shaping public opinion. He discusses how non-Muslim journalists contributed to this stylistic evolution, bringing their unique perspectives and sensibilities to the craft.
In today’s world, where divisions often overshadow shared histories, Anjum’s book serves as a powerful reminder of the inclusive and unifying spirit of Urdu journalism. It challenges the reader to reflect on the secular and collective efforts that have defined the language’s legacy.
The book’s relevance extends beyond the realm of journalism. It is a testament to the cultural synthesis that has shaped India’s history and underscores the role of Urdu as a language that transcends religious and cultural boundaries.
Urdu Sahafat Ke Frogh Mein Ghair Muslim Sahafiyon Ki Khidmaat is more than just a historical account; it is a celebration of a shared cultural and intellectual legacy. Sohail Anjum has crafted a narrative that is both enlightening and inspiring, shedding light on the often-overlooked contributions of non-Muslim journalists to Urdu journalism.
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Urdu, the dynamics of Indian journalism, or the broader themes of cultural dialogue and inclusivity. Anjum’s work is a timely reminder of the values that have sustained Urdu journalism for over two centuries, offering valuable lessons for the present and future.

[ad_1] Paromita Das GG News Bureau New Delhi, 27thNovember. In a development that has reignited a long-standing controversy, the Allahabad High Court on November 25 directed the Union Home Ministry (MHA) to take decisive action on a plea seeking the cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharatiya citizenship over allegations of dual British citizenship. The court has instructed the MHA to address the matter and provide its response by December 19, the next hearing date. The public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by S. Vignesh Shishir, a Karnataka-based BJP worker, who also requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the allegations. The Lucknow bench of Justices A.R. Masoodi and Subhash Vidyarthi underscored the urgency of the issue, asking the additional solicitor general to clarify the ministry’s stance and report on actions taken thus far. The Allegations: A Recurring Point of Debate The claims of dual citizenship against Rahul Gandhi are not new. These allegations primarily stem from documents purportedly showing that Gandhi had declared himself a British citizen in filings associated with a company in the UK. Such accusations have been a political weapon used by his opponents, particularly within the BJP, to question his eligibility to serve as a Member of Parliament and as a leader of the opposition. The petitioner in the current case, Shishir, had previously filed and withdrawn a similar petition in July, opting to pursue remedies under the Citizenship Act. He later submitted two fresh representations to the MHA, which were acknowledged but remain under review. This case ties into a related petition filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in the Delhi High Court, where he has sought a CBI investigation and a status report from the MHA on Gandhi’s citizenship status. Swamy has been one of the most vocal proponents of these allegations, adding to the political dimensions of the case. Legal Context and the Court’s Focus The Allahabad High Court made it clear that the current proceedings focus on ensuring due process regarding the petitioner’s representations. While the court refrained from commenting on the merit of the allegations, it stressed the need for clarity on the actions taken by the MHA. Deputy Solicitor General of India informed the court that the MHA had received the representations and that the matter was under consideration. However, the court emphasized the importance of resolving the issue promptly, given the public interest involved. Implications of the Case Political Fallout The case is likely to fuel political tensions, particularly as the country gears up for critical state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP may use the controversy to question Rahul Gandhi’s credentials and leadership within the Congress. Legal Precedent If the court finds merit in the petition, it could set a significant precedent regarding the eligibility of public officials with alleged foreign citizenships. It would also provide clarity on the application of the Citizenship Act in cases of dual citizenship claims. Reputational Impact For Rahul Gandhi, the case poses a reputational challenge. While he has consistently denied the allegations, prolonged legal scrutiny could overshadow his political activities and deflect attention from Congress’s election campaigns. Due Process or Political Vendetta? The renewed focus on Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship raises questions about the interplay between legal due process and political motivations. On one hand, the allegations, if substantiated, would constitute a serious breach of Bharatiya laws, warranting thorough investigation. On the other hand, the timing and persistence of these claims suggest they could be part of a broader strategy to undermine Gandhi’s political standing. The judiciary’s role in such cases is crucial. By ensuring that the matter is handled transparently and expeditiously, the court can prevent the misuse of legal processes for political gains.
It is equally important for the MHA to provide a clear and evidence-based response to avoid prolonged uncertainty. Conclusion: A Case with Far-Reaching Consequences As the December 19 deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the MHA’s response to the court’s directive. The outcome of this case has the potential to shape the political narrative in the months leading up to the general elections. For Rahul Gandhi, the case represents yet another challenge in his tumultuous political career. Whether it becomes a turning point or just another footnote will depend on the legal proceedings ahead. For the BJP, it is an opportunity to keep the Congress leader on the defensive. Ultimately, this case underscores the need for a balanced approach that upholds the rule of law while safeguarding democratic integrity.   The post Rahul Gandhi’s Citizenship Under Scrutiny: Allahabad High Court Seeks MHA Response appeared first on Global Governance News- Asia's First Bilingual News portal for Global News and Updates. LUCKNOW, India (AP) — An Indian state has approved an unprecedented uniform code for marriage, divorce, adoption and inheritance for Hindus, Muslims and other religious communities under new legislation that also requires couples that live together to register with the government or face punishment.
Northern Uttarakhand state lawmakers passed the legislation on Wednesday and its approval by the state governor and the Indian president is seen as a formality before it becomes law in the state. Muslim leaders and others oppose the Uniform Civil Code initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu Nationalist party saying it interferes with their own laws and customs on such issues.
India, the world’s most populous nation with more than 1.4 billion people, is comprised of around 80% Hindus and about 14% Muslims. Muslims accuse Modi’s right-wing nationalist party of pursuing a Hindu agenda that discriminates against them and directly imposes laws interfering with their faith.
“This is a nefarious political design to drive a wedge in the society on religious lines,” said Yashpal Arya, an opposition Congress party lawmaker.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the top elected official in Uttarakhand state, said: “The new legislation is not against any religion or community, but will bring uniformity in the society."
Other states ruled by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party are expected to introduce similar legislation. If the BJP wins national elections expected in April or May, it may bring such legislation at the federal level.
The new law bans polygamy and sets a uniform age for marriage for men and women — 21 and 18, respectively — across all religions and also includes a uniform process for divorce.
Hindus, Muslims, Christians and other minority groups in India currently follow their own laws and customs for marriage, divorce, adoption and inheritance.
Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen, said the legislation is merely a Hindu code that applies to all.
"I have a right to practice my religion and culture. This bill forces me to follow a different religion and culture. In our religion, inheritance and marriage are part of religious practice," he said on X, formerly Twitter.
S.Q.R. Ilyas, the spokesperson for the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said: “The bill is unnecessary, and goes against the principle of diversity. Its primary target appears to be Muslims, especially since even (some Indigenous tribes) have been exempted."
A significant feature of the bill is the introduction of stringent measures that require the registration of live-in relationships. Couples failing to register their live-in status with district officials could face up to six months in prison or a fine of 25,000 rupees ($305) or both, said Manoj Singh Tamta, a state government official. He said the bill explicitly states that children born out of such relationships will be considered legitimate offspring of the couple, inheriting all legal rights available to those born within a traditional marriage.
Sanjay Agnihotri, a consultant with a non-government organization that works in micro-financing, said he and his girlfriend belong to different castes and their families oppose the idea of them marrying. They relocated to another city and started living as partners without formalizing their relationship through marriage.
"However, the new legislation mandates us to register our relationship, which could potentially subject us to unwarranted police scrutiny,” said Agnihotri.
Uttarakhand became the first Indian state after it won independence from British colonialists in 1947 to adopt legislation on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religion, a key part of the BJP's agenda for decades.
