I've seen u mention Lucinda as an example of a trans brobecks song a few times :O I'm interested in your interpretation
Ooo thanks for asking!! It's not super deep but here it is! I think the song is meant to be about the singer being trapped in a relationship with this girl who won't leave him alone, named Lucinda. My interpretation is centered around changing "let me be, Lucinda" into "let me be Lucinda" -- note the comma --, so the song becomes about a trans woman named Lucinda who isn't being supported/allowed to come out.
A lot of the verses are about not changing and being unhappy with the way things are now, so it fits pretty well in my opinion! ex. "seasons change, but I'm not changing" and "I'm alive, but this ain't living." Some parts of it I also see as the narrator characterizing Lucinda as separate from themself, like "let me sleep, Lucinda" = kept up at night by gender thoughts, and "but she's not burning" = no matter what, Lucinda is still there inside of the narrator -- along with the previous line, "I still burn," others/the narrator themself are trying to "get Lucinda out" of them by hurting them, like "burn her out", but it's not working. "All I want/is to be/alone" might mean they only feel comfortable being themself alone -- perhaps wanting time to dress as a woman, as most of the other trans Brobecks songs involve crossdressing. Even "I'm a fool, but she's not foolin'" kinda works -- the narrator feels silly for wanting to be a woman, but thinks that everyone can see through them and knows they're trans.

Track 2 from The Brobecks first album The 4th Of JuLive (recorded live July 4th 2003 obvs) this album was lost to time for awhile until just recently when a previous member found an old burned cdr of the album and sent me the files. woo. this is also the only other version of Lucinda aside from the New Years Live performance of it

* lucinda is a song i literally could not find anywhere. it’s not on the bandcamp, so we know mike sang it, and it’s not on youtube. sorryyyy :(
** these three songs weren’t available to play on the bandcamp?? so like idk what versions of the songs they were.
also there are 10/10 more live shows that they have played, i just got really tired of scrolling through the endless pages of results for searching up ‘the brobecks live’ on youtube. so if ya wanna see more, you can.
ok so quick edit haha i went back to put the full version of city lights onto this post because i found it months after making this, and i fucked the post up. it’s not drastic, but the song sleeping pills won’t show up, and heartbreak or death isn’t linked for some reason. im SO SORRY!!! you can find these songs on youtube by looking up their title & ‘the brobecks’ (obviously)!! enjoy them they’re really good songs :)

Mike Gross wrote such unbelievably queer songs for The Brobecks... Lucinda, Jacqui.... or maybe it's just me lmao, though there's also the more obvious crossdressing ones
#which was sort of a whole band thing tho on some level#i said this#the brobecks#mike gross#whisperhawk#michael gross

obsessed with so many old Brobecks songs probably being written with transphobic intent, but in such a way that I can easily headcanon them as “trans songs” today
