I value my art in terms of what it gives back to me after I create it. Because it is one of the richest sources of knowledge, inspiration and criticism for me, I value it above all else. In turn, I value and love myself because of my experience I have with my art. So in short, my art has created me just as much as I have created it and together, we move forward and innovate one another with the utmost intention, purpose, consciousness and mystery. I understand my art as innately valuable because of its active productivity in being my primary teacher—a self generative, self sufficient, self reliant embodiment of personal evolution. #luciendanteart Series: NA Title: Queer Fear Medium: monotype print of mohair, oil paint, chalk pastel, printmaking paper Dimensions: H-22.5” x W-15” Period: December, 2018 Place: CCA Graduate Studio, SF • It’s surprising to me when people see artworks of mine and call them “she” as I’m usually making self portraits or self inspired portraits of other beings. I think I see myself in a way that others don’t see, and that’s where a lot of my Queerness lays. Although this piece looks fairly happy and whimsical, as I looked at it further I noticed the fence and the fiery red bursting forth behind the body. It made me think of visible queerness as both power and fear. Although I didn’t get the job I got three beautiful drawings out of it. The triptych consists of “Birth” “Life” and “Death” and each embodies its own unique symbolism to convey my feelings regarding those three general happenings. This is the most abundant of them all. #luciendanteart Series: Intuitive Reflections Title: Mother And Child Medium: ink brush, paper Dimensions: H-12” x W-8.5” Year: 2018 • This is a rendering of Mother Mary and Baby Jesus. It’s almost deconstructed to the point where the main purpose and power of the scene is the gesture of the cradling act itself. The ethereal, apparition-like quality speaks to the way art history has transformed two arguably real individuals into an archetype or gestural iconography. I wonder if that gestural significance and transformation of religious figures is the reason for their long term success, rather than constantly trying to capture Jesus and Mary as real human beings. #luciendanteart Series: Cosmic Surrealism Title: Big Problems Medium: oil pastel, parchment paper Dimensions: H-11” x W-8.5” Year: 2018 • “Big Problems” is a slightly misleading title, especially for such a gorgeous artwork! I really love this one. Rather than problems in the negative sense, everything in this drawing, especially and primarily the body, is depicted with its own identity that is seemingly separate from itself and its surroundings. These distinctions depict our tendency to compartmentalize ourselves and our lives. My lips, my teeth, my dick, my feet—are all part of the same unit. But people tend to isolate things which causes an inherent sense of separation within ourselves as well as everything we experience. The main goal of life is to understand and absorb the consciousness of life as a unified being. In order to do that we must first start with ourselves, our bodies and our immediate surroundings. Living with an understanding of unity and dependency is living with compassion and a true sense of reality. I think aesthetic plastic surgery would stop being such a trend if we understood compartmentalism which is vital to understanding commodification and so on and so forth. #luciendanteart Series: Cosmic Surrealism Title: Learning To Be Bold Medium: oil pastel, parchment paper Dimensions: H-11” x W-8.5” Year: 2018 • “Learning To Be Bold” is about the journey of a conscious loving life full of creativity and a sense of purpose, which very much defines my life. “Learning” is an important word in the title however, which refers to the nature of life which is represented and enacted through process. Once we feel as though we’ve been exempted from process, we need to re-evaluate and get that feeling back. For it is through process that we gain mobility and progress, which allows for wisdom, presence and that sense of purpose and belonging that human beings absolutely need. #luciendanteart Series: Cosmic Surrealism Title: Confused / In Love Medium: oil pastel, parchment paper Dimensions: H-11” x W-8.5” Year: 2018 • Although I’m not entirely sure what “Confused / In Love” is about, it seems to be about the ever evolving flux of my relationship and I’m assuming other’s as well. Being in a relationship where you are deeply in love while trying to navigate two different lives is an extremely rewarding and at times difficult reality. There are four primary components to this drawing which helped me title it—those being the golden hand over the face, the large lips, the eye and lastly the general environment of the head which is created by various forms and colors. The lips represent physical love and sexual attachment. The hand represents Will Force and self reflection. The eye represents wisdom, turmoil, spirituality, spiritual connections and the paranoia that comes with loving something so much that you begin to fear losing it. The general head represents the present moment of being and the beauty and courage of experiencing all of the previous three things in the context of an intimate progression, evolution and flux. Very intuitively drawn, it feels perfect to me. Like all the lines converge at the right points and the colors create the right perceptions of space and quality. The things that are successful about this piece are the things that are at the core of Cosmic Surrealism so I’m really happy with this one for those reasons. I remember buying this beautiful drawing book of hand pressed cotton paper and wanting to experiment with a calligraphy pen. I was in this phase of drawing where I would create figures with either one line or multiple line shapes. #luciendanteart Series: Gender Painting Title: The Fly : Self Portrait Medium: watercolor paint, watercolor paper Dimensions: H-16” x W-24” Year: 2016 • “The Fly” is a painting I made during the gender identity crisis I experienced after graduating undergrad in the Summer of 2016. It was really traumatic feeling like you all of a sudden don’t know who you are or if your body is the right body for your mind. What I Eventually realized is that I’m my own human being and my body and my mind are who I am. It’s important to experience crisis in our lives rather than try to cover them up. I delved so deeply into that crisis and it taught me some of the most important things I’ve learned about myself. Be brave with everything, especially with who you are.
