In Limbo has the pace and tone of a sitcom, but it packs an emotional punch
(!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)
The snappy banter between Charlie (Ryan Corr) and Nate (Bob Morley) in the opening scenes of this comedy-drama introduces much of what you need to know about their long-time friendship. But, as with many aspects of this cleverly calibrated series, it’s also deliberately deceptive.
The scenes establish a connection between the men, illustrating a friendship that dates back to their childhood. There’s an instinctive understanding between them despite their readily discernible differences. Charlie is uneasy and uncertain, rehearsing his delivery of a eulogy for a funeral. Nate breezes in offering advice on everything from Charlie’s outfit to the desirable tone and content of his speech, as well as his chances of picking up at a funeral. He’s quick-witted, confident and funny, as vibrant as his wardrobe of shirts, and he seems to be operating at an entirely different frequency from his best pal. Everything about Charlie suggests a heaviness, a man carrying a weighty burden, and we gradually come to see him as someone who’s closed in on himself and refuses to discuss the reasons why.
Created and co-written by Lucas Taylor (Harrow, Secrets & Lies), In Limbo indicates its area of interest early: it’s about men and mental health, and one of the key points that it aims to make is that problems, and an unwillingness to discuss them, can afflict all sorts of men.
It emerges that Charlie’s marriage has collapsed, his wife, Beth (Jane Harber), has left him and he’s determinedly dodging her concerned calls and visits. And that Nate has his own issues, in spite of his upbeat manner. In Limbo is clear in its view that appearances can’t be trusted and that cheery assurances along the lines of “All good, mate” can mask deep-seated difficulties.
Over its six episodes, the series, written with crisp wit by Taylor and Tamara Asmar, develops a range of stories alongside its portrait of the core characters. A lively community grows around Charlie and Nate as we’re introduced to their families, friends and workmates, and it becomes clear that the series’ title applies to a number of characters.
What also becomes clear is that, despite its sunny Brisbane setting and light and airy tone, In Limbo is interested in dealing with a range of darker issues: depression, addiction and domestic violence. As well, it explores the shock, regret, guilt and grief that can follow a sudden death. Yet, as with the opening sequence, this is deceptive, because while In Limbo has the pace and tone of a sitcom, it can also pack a potent emotional punch. It’s a serious study wrapped in bright and shiny packaging.
Overseeing the first two episodes and managing to nail a tone that’s tricky to achieve, set-up director Trent O’Donnell (No Activity, The Letdown, Hacks, Ghosts) again displays his precision timing and gift for comedy. While economically establishing the ensemble, he keeps things fast and funny but captures the glances and gestures that are revealing of character without requiring expository dialogue. Taking over from episode three, David Stubbs (Daffodils, Girl vs Boy) seamlessly maintains those qualities.
While the series’ central concern is men, it maintains that focus without reducing the female characters to props. They’re as well-written and cast as their male counterparts. Emma Harvie delivers a nuanced performance as Nate’s wife, Freya, and Shabana Azeez is a charismatic livewire as her younger sister. And Georgina Naidu is a hoot as their mother, who flies in from London in a perfumed cloud of self-absorption. The relationship between Nate’s parents (Lena Cruz and Russell Dykstra) is also beautifully drawn, presenting a couple who’ve come to a quiet understanding of each other. Even the youngest cast member, Kamillia Rihani as Nate and Freya’s daughter, is impressive.
As they do in the opening scenes, Corr (Holding the Man, Wakefield, Ladies in Black) and Morley (The 100, Love Me) shine throughout the series, their sensitive, potent performances providing a strong foundation for the community built around them.
They do the bantering bloke stuff beautifully, portraying pals who can happily argue about which character each of them represents from Top Gun – who’s Maverick and who’s Goose? – and debating the all-time best Christmas movie: Die Hard or Gremlins?
They also underline the series’ assertion that men need to talk more – to each other, to their partners, to family and friends, and possibly also to health professionals – about their doubts and fears and difficulties, and not just about their pop-culture preferences.
In Limbo premieres on ABC, Wednesday, May 24, 9pm and iview.

hiiii show your dh ocs!! (if you want to ofc)
YES YES YES!!!!! (thank youuuuu)
They're on ToyHouse too (just Octave is hidden and Nelly you have to be logged or idk cuz I have some things to change)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm about to kill myself I was almost done with the post and then lost everything
Aldina's story contains spoilers from the last book, The Veiled Terror!
(also this is set in the AU where Jindosh lives because the denial is real, and they almost all met him at some point too omg my love for this man is showing a lot)
I have a lot to say about some of them, so left to right =>
Sybill Howlet (SH)
I'm obsessed with Sherlock Holmes too and this was a way for me to combined two things I like, even her name is a ref to Sherlock!
She's from Dunwall, she was living in the streets with her sister but they lost each other a long time ago. The Bottle Street Gang was her family (Slackjaw went to father figure to friend over time). Then, one day, Archibald (Vinz's dad (see later)) found her and got impressed by her thinking and mind, and decided to take her out of the streets and help her use her full potential. Soon enough, the Outsider took great interest into her, and started to visit her dreams and help her find little secrets about everyone. He never gave her his mark.
When the Coup occurred, she left Dunwall a few weeks, only to come back and finish her current cases then leave once again but for Karnaca this time. That's when she heard about Billie's actions and omg what a queen. The Bank Job? such a masterpiece, outstanding, amazing. She loved following her trail around the city, trying to understand what she was looking for. She met Jindosh because of this, cuz she wanted to talk to him about the break-in. She enjoys quite a lot to annoys him (and just to roast people).
Aldina/Al
Her parents were nobles/friends with Luca, but she always despised him a lot actually. She prefers women company, and that's how she found out she was lesbian. The only man she never really hated was Jindosh, because she likes the Clockwork Soldiers. Her biggest inspiration was the witches, tho. She loved going to the Conservatory and spend time with Breanna, she wanted SO MUCH to meet Delilah, to be part of the Coven, to join them!!!! it was her biggest dream. But then, what?? Corvo comes and the witches are now gone.
Old men are so BORING.
Later, when the Outsider was no more, her parents died because of the nightmares. Then, she wondered alone on the streets, and kind of managed to fix a Clockwork Sentinel because the main program and such were still in good condition. That is how and when Jindosh met her for the first time. He took her to his mansion, thinking she could be of some use, and taught her some things too. Al' likes to creep behind the walls and scares the staff by singing lullabies and sea shanties.
Everything was fine, until Corvo came back. She wanted SO BADLY to kill him, to rip off his skin, to boil him alive, for what he's done to her, to the witches, to Delilah, to her first found family, to her broken dreams. She wanted so badly to do it, then found out Jindosh cared about him. She's making a very lot of efforts to accept the fact that the man who destroyed her hopes and dreams is now part of her new family, and eventually she'll come to terms with it... many years later.
Thanks to the Void stones in her arm, she can use a little magic, but it's very complicated. Jindosh likes to call her "little mouse", and she's friend with rats. Also she steals Jindosh's stuff a lot and likes to spend time with Alex'.
Vincent/Vinz MacIntosh
Archibald MacIntosh is a private detective from Morley, after a failed attempt at the Academy. He married a tailor, who died cuz of the plague, and likes to paint too. He worked with the City Watch for some time.
As for Vinz, he got inspired by his father, but decided to become a journalist instead (not like it was less dangerous, moreover he's working with one if not the most dangerous gang in Karnaca, needless to say it worries his father a lot). Anyway, Vinz came to Karnaca a few years before the Coup, and he's more than happy to be part of this major history event. Because of his father's past and everything he was taught, he recognized Corvo quite easily, and tried his best to convince him NOT TO KILL JINDOSH. Because, yeah, Vinz is a HUGE fan of Jindosh's works.
The silvergraph? omg THIS IS SO COOL to illustrate the news or just have portraits of people! The audiograph? perfect to record things and testimonies! The Clockwork Soldiers? They're not really worse than the Tallboys back then, and they could be useful too!! for, like, THE FUCKING BLOODFLIES??? people of Karnaca have more chances to get killed by the bloodflies than the Clockwork Soldiers. It's not like Jindosh was kidnapping children to torture them and eat their organs??? He's killing INTRUDERS in his very OWN HOUSE. How are thieves treated at Dunwall Tower, I wonder?????
Anyway, Vinz likes to draw and to listen to Jindosh ranting about his inventions, trying his best to understand.
(Archibald doesn't have a clean ref but he's not really important anyway)
And then, I don't have much about them.
Nelly
She's a maid at the Clockwork Mansion, and quickly became friend with Aldina. The two of them like to prank the others and going out. I think, at some point, Nelly will leave the place and do something else. It's not like she has a bad treatment - Jindosh barely knows about her, mostly thanks to Aldina (also she's the maid I make appear when I need someone in the mansion) - it's just she wants to do something else. Going on a trip maybe. I have to think about it. Btw, she's from Serkonos, and knows many things about Corvo because he's such a legend there, everyone knows about him. She probably likes to cook.
Caleb
He's a grumpy old man from Tyvia, but he lived most of his younger years in Baleton. He went to prison, but soon entered the navy when the choice's been given to him. They weren't expecting him to last this long. Now, he's pretty strong, and would like to have a fight with the Royal Protector to test his limits. Caleb likes poetry and the sea.
Octave Hearly
He's also from Morley. Octave is into cartoon and cinema, mostly. When he heard about Jindosh's work on the silvergraph and the "moving images", his heart skipped a beat and he decided to join him and work with him on all this.

⛵💬❌📜
⛵ Is there a place you’d like to visit in game? Level-wise I would have loved the scrapped Dunwall clocktower/parliment map. Every time I see it in the game I want to go there and climb. For settings, it would have been fun to see a city in Morley or Tyvia, but I don't really have a preference. I'd have likely enjoyed any new locations and getting a deeper look into how life is in the Isles. 💬 Favorite character or NPC line? This took me so long to decide. I love all the little quips from the protagonists in 2 and DOTO. Billie especially is hilarious, her deposit comment at Michaels Bank is great. The Outsider has some great speeches in 1 too. So many NPCs have great character building in the small number of lines they get. If I had to pick right now, probably this from the Daud DLC: "When Billie Lurk was eight she wanted to be the captain of a ship. From the moment she met you, all she wanted was to be a killer." I've been thinking a lot about her since finishing DOTO again. ❌ Any unpopular opinions? I'm not entirely up to date on popular opinions, but I guess I don't think DH2 is necessarily "worse" because it is designed to allow multiple playstyles. DH1's rigidity in what you can and can't do can be good, but I think both have their ups and downs. Oh, also I think Martin is fine but I don't really "get" his hype? He's got some stuff going on but so does half the cast so him being such a favourite was surprising to me.
📜 Is there anything you wished you could have seen from the series, or anything you think it could have done better? I would have loved more focus on Emily and Luca's similarities in her route. She has something of an arc but the game could honestly commit so much more. Perhaps also seeing evidence of Delilah make more efforts to rule well before giving in and going straight to forcing a perfect world (though if the Abbey knew about her magic early I doubt that would go well). I also hoped, before DH2 came out, that we would get both protagonists available through the whole game, rather than being separate playthroughs. This didn't happen but I like to think about an alternate DH2 where it did and we got to see more family interaction. We might even have gotten better links between their two playthroughs and themes?

The writing team included the writers who also gave us two other movies I like: City Slickers and Fever Pitch. Parenthood accomplishes in general what the movie Rain Man did for my wife and me. It reminded us of our autistic daughter And made us laugh at stuff that frustrated us in “real life.“ Similarly Parenthood touches upon a lot of hotspots in the parenting experience and helps us laugh at them. Their is a fine Ensemble cast. I particularly like KianU Reeves as Tod, who seems like an inappropriate boyfriend for the daughter but who proves to be valuable in mentoring their disaffected son. There are many memorable situations but one line my wife and I often quote even after all these years occurs when the other son Larry is pushed out of a still moving vehicle by people he owes money to. His father, played straight by Jason Robards, asked who they were. Tod replies that they were just some friends. The memorable line by Robards’ character is, “Friends. Friends slow down; they even stop.” The movie is full of good one-liners, as well as more in-depth sources of humor. You must ...

At the heart of Stephenson’s complaint is the contention that Payne had the “Frisco” script in both 2013 and again in late 2019, right before Payne approached Hemingson about collaborating on a project. That contention seems to be backed up by emails involving several Hollywood agencies and producers. On Aug. 28, 2013, Verve founder Bryan Besser sent an email to a number of people including Stephenson that said, “Quick update: We gave FRISCO to Alexander Payne’s producing partner Jim Burke whom we took to lunch yesterday. Our opinion is that in an ideal world this is the best way into Searchlight.” Four months later, UTA’s Geoff Morley seemed to indicate that Payne had read “Frisco,” writing: “I spoke to Alexander Payne’s exec Jim Burke directly a while back and he said that Payne did like it but was not interested in prod or directing it.”
WOW! Yeah I don’t think there’s a way to explain this away.

At the beginning I was wondering why I love so much Lucas Jade Zumann as Gilbert Blythe, but then I realized that with his dark, curly hair, poor flirting skills and constant jaw clenching he reminds me of my one (1) love of my life Bellamy Blake played by Bob Morley.
What a coincidence.
