Part 2
Summary: When Jim's mum is out on parole and comes to live with him and (Y/n), she does whatever she can to hurt (Y/n) and come between them. And it puts (Y/n) and her unborn baby at risk.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hm, morning."
A shiver tore down (Y/n)'s spine when she felt an arm loop around her waist and a warm pair of lips attach to the side of her neck. She tilted her head to the left, trying not to move or shudder when the short hairs on Jim's head started to graze against her cheek and caused her nerves to ignite beneath the touch.
Her lips curved into a smile and she paused, her fingers tapping against the counter where she was in the middle of making them each a coffee.
"Morning, want breakfast before you go?" She twisted her head to the right and kissed the top of his head, smiling into his hair when she felt his teeth nipping against her skin.
It was hit and miss whether Jim would have breakfast or not, most of the time he grabbed a protein bar and waited until lunch with the squad at work.
"I'd rather have you." The way his words vibrated into her neck made (Y/n)'s heart flutter and she couldn't help the grin that spread across her lips.
"Oh really?"
(Y/n) forced her hands to work and started pouring the coffee, being mindful not to spill it when she could feel Jim's lips distracting her. And she could feel him smirking into her neck. He knew what effect he had on her and how to turn her to jelly.
She barely had the cups poured before she felt Jim's hands moving down to her stomach. He finally released his head from her neck but only so he could peck the side of her head and stand up straight behind her. (Y/n) tilted her head down, rolling her lips together as she watched his hands move to roll up her top.
"What're you doing?"
"Let me look at you."
She let go of the mugs, biting the inside of her cheek when Jim spun her round so her hips were backed up against the counter and she was facing him. Her hands moved to grip the counter, keeping herself steady as a fond look danced across her face when she looked up at her husband.
"You act like you haven't seen me in weeks." The tender edge to her voice was clear while she danced her fingertips along the back of his neck.
She could see where his eyes were drifting to. He had rolled her shirt up so it rested just beneath her bra, leaving her small bump on show. He was fascinated. Every day he was looking to try and see if he could notice the small changes and to see if he could see her bump growing and changing each day.
Jim's childhood had been far from great. Fighting parents, his dad who abused the both of them and his mum who always struck back until the day she decided to fend him off with a gun. And then foster homes for the next seven years until he could finally live on his own.
He wasn't used to having a family until he worked in Swat, and he wasn't prepared for the amount of love he would receive and feel for (Y/n) when they got together. Having a family was something Jim always wanted, but it was something he had been nervous about.
Jim didn't know how good of a dad he was going to be until that pregnancy test came back positive and he could feel the changes already. He had prime examples of what not to do and he used Deacon as a role model for how he was going to make this work. The love and excitement Jim felt already was enough to show him he was going to be okay at this.
"I wanna look at my girls." He responded with a shrug and a tick of his head that almost made him look boyish.
(Y/n) reached her hands up to cradle the back of his neck and she brought him down for a kiss, soaking up the sound he made when her nails scratched the short hairs at the back of his neck. She could feel his thumbs stroking across her hipbones which made her squirm and shudder in front of him, and when he bit her lip he elicited a gasp that had him smiling against her mouth.
Her hands moved down to his shoulders when he finally released her lips and trailed his way down her neck.
She heard hum murmur 'morning girlie' against her stomach and his hands kept moving back and forth over the sides of her hips. His lips tickled her stomach but the butterflies he elicited beneath his touch had (Y/n) swaying on her feet.
"She should start moving soon." (Y/n) continued to run her hands over Jim's shoulders and the smile that danced over his face made her heart leap in her chest.
She was sure he murmured 'can't wait' against her lips when he leaned up to steal another kiss.
(Y/n) knew anytime now she should start feeling the baby move and kick and she knew once that happened, Jim wouldn't be separated from her stomach. He wanted to be there for everything, he wanted to be at all the scans and feel every movement and he was already thrilled at the thought of when (Y/n) was going to give birth. He didn't want to miss a thing.
"Good morning."
"Morning mum." Jim nuzzled his temple against (Y/n)'s neck so he could just about see his mum as she walked past them in the kitchen. He grinned when he felt (Y/n) squeeze his shoulders and he sighed and tore himself away from her. He gave her hips a lasting squeeze before he grabbed the hem of her shirt and pulled it back down to cover her bump.
"Want some breakfast, Jimmy?"
"No, I'm good. Guess I need to get ready." He pecked (Y/n)'s temple and pressed up close until their abdomens were touching so he could grab the travel cup from behind her that she had filled for him.
He wasn't hungry in the mornings and he wasn't bothered about breakfast, he just had to get ready to go to work.
(Y/n) ran her hand up and down his shoulder, following him with her eyes as he moved near the fridge to kiss his mum's temple before she sat down at the kitchen table.
The look Karen shot (Y/n)'s way made her shiver but she forced herself to smile. She wouldn't let her mother in law get to her, at least not while Jim was home. When he was at work, Karen seemed to unleash her spiteful side. She would make snappy comments at (Y/n), move things, changes the dates on the calendar, she would do anything she could to upset or annoy (Y/n).
But when Jim was home, Karen was the picture of the calm, sweet mother who wanted nothing more than to get along with her son and his wife.
(Y/n) hated it. She hated how rude and spiteful Karen could be, and she hated that Karen was living with them, but what other choice did they have?
She needed to have a place sorted out or else she wouldn't have been released from prison and with Jim's reasoning, (Y/n) didn't feel like she could say no. Karen had guilt tripped Jim just like she always did, she made him feel guilty, she told him that he was the reason she was in prison in the first place. She had shot her husband to protect them both and that was the way Jim had always seem things.
He wanted nothing more than for his mum to be released and they had a spare room, which his mum was always pointing out. They had the space, she wanted to be close to her son and she didn't want to be alone after all those years locked up. There was no way Jim could refuse her without breaking her heart and that was the last thing he wanted to do.
"Oh Jimmy, are you taking me to my interview tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? No, you said it was Friday." Jim leaned around the fridge to catch a look at the calendar on the wall.
His mum had a job, but it a long bus ride to get to and from work so Jim had found a few places closer to home that were willing to hire someone with a record.
"No, it's tomorrow at one. Can you take me sweetie?" Her smile was sincere, but it was the way she glanced over at (Y/n) that had the younger woman pushing back into the counter.
The smile faded from (Y/n)'s lips and she looped her arms over her bump, taking a deep breath to remain calm. She knew what tomorrow was. (Y/n) had her scan tomorrow and Jim had an extended lunch break tomorrow specifically so he could go to the scan with her. Hondo was happy and proud of Jim for being so involved and excited about starting a family and he said they would try and arrange Jim's shifts around (Y/n)'s appointments.
"Mum, we have the scan tomorrow, can't you get the bus?"
Jim tossed the travel mug between his hands and sank his teeth down into his lower lip enough to draw blood. He didn't want to upset his mum or make her panic, but he wanted to be at the scan, he couldn't miss that. And it wasn't a long bus ride to get to the diner in town where her interview was being held.
"Jimmy, you know how nervous interviews make me… it's not the first scan, (Y/n) will be fine without you."
With a deep breath, (Y/n) bypassed Jim and moved to the fridge to get a yoghurt. She wasn't getting involved in this, but she would make sure her silence was clear and disagreeable.
That wasn't fair.
Karen knew (Y/n) hated hospitals. Whenever Jim used to visit his mum in prison, he was forever talking about (Y/n) and their life together, how she made him feel like a better person and helped push him to get into Swat and get on the right track. Jim talked about her a lot and when he told his mum they were having a baby, he had mentioned once or twice that (Y/n) didn't do well with hospitals.
He went to the scans because he was desperate to be involved with his baby but also because he wanted to support (Y/n). He knew she had had bad experiences in hospitals and they made her nervous so he wanted to be at all her appointments to try and make it easier for her.
Jim spared a look over at his wife. He could see how hard she was gripping the fridge so she didn't start to shake and the way her eyes danced around the room gave away her unease which made him sigh.
"I can't take you, but I can pick you up afterwards."
"Oh, okay." The disappointment in Karen's voice was clear and it made (Y/n) feel sick.
Her mother in law wasn't going to make things easy for her now. Whenever Jim was at work and Karen was on a day off, (Y/n)'s day got worse. (Y/n) worked from home which had always been a comfort, right until Karen moved in with them two weeks ago. The first week she had been on her best behaviour, mostly because Jim had been home quite a lot.
Now he was back to his usual work pattern, (Y/n) was left alone with Karen who was becoming spiteful and insufferable.
"I gotta go, I'll see you both tonight."
(Y/n)'s chest fluttered when Jim held her chin between his finger and thumb so he could tilt her head up in his direction. His lips quirked up to one side and he brushed his thumb along her chin before he captured her in a quick but searing kiss.
"Love you," He spoke into her mouth, pulling her lower lip between his teeth before he was turning away and heading down the hall to grab his things.
The moment the front door closed, (Y/n) pulled her arms into her sides like she wanted to wear a suit of armour for protection. Her eyes followed Karen as she got up, lips pursed, nose crinkled and shoulders squared like she was getting ready for a fight.
Part of (Y/n) had thought in the beginning that Karen would be happy about having a grandchild. She thought Karen would be pleased for Jim because he was happy and settled. It didn't dawn on (Y/n) that Karen would become jealous. She was no longer the only person in Jim's life. Karen had been replaced. She couldn't have Jim all to herself, he was no longer the little boy she had left when she got taken to prison.
She had missed out on almost two decades of his life and as much as (Y/n) could sympathise, she couldn't condone Karen trying to keep Jim to herself and control him like she was.
"I guess you got what you wanted then."
Her harsh words made (Y/n) flinch and sigh. She didn't know whether to reach out for her mother in law or stay huddled up near the counter.
"Karen, I-"
"No, I get it. You think because you're having a baby that you've got him wrapped around your finger. Well you don't."
Both (Y/n)'s arms pressed into her stomach and she swallowed a gasp when Karen roughly barged her shoulder into (Y/n)'s chest on her way past her.
Why did she have to be like that? Why did she have to be so crude and snarky and possessive over Jim? (Y/n) always thought when she got married that she would have a great relationship with her in-laws. And when Jim told her about his mum, (Y/n) wanted to get to know her. She wanted to know the woman who had gone to prison to protect him, but that wasn't the same woman who was walking away from her right now.
This woman was bitter and manipulative, and maybe that was because she had to toughen up when she went to prison. Maybe she really did kill her husband to protect Jim, but she was using that as an excuse to control Jim and his life and worm everything to her advantage. And she knew (Y/n) wouldn't stand for it, which made (Y/n) an obstacle in her path.
God, (Y/n) hoped the worst Karen would do would just be to spit insults at her. She could endure this for a few more weeks, it wouldn't be for long.
Jim had agreed that his mum could stay with them for a few months, but she had to go when they had the baby, preferably just before they had the baby. The house was going to be lively when they had their daughter and they would be busy.
(Y/n) couldn't be looking after her baby and dealing with Karen and her vindictive nature. And she and Jim wanted to be a family and have their home to themselves when they had the baby.
Just a little while longer, and then Karen would be living on her own.
***
"Karen?" (Y/n) rapped her knuckles on the door and gingerly leaned around to peek into the spare room. Her hands stayed clinging to the door and she bit down on her lip, trying to pluck up as much courage as she had within her to both have this conversation and stay calm.
"Yeah?" The older woman looked less than interested in a conversation with her daughter in law.
She rose a brow and nudged her glasses further up her nose while she twisted on the bed so she was looking in (Y/n)'s direction.
"Have you seen my notebook? The blue one, I use for work?"
The flicker that danced over Karen's eyes and had her lips twitching made (Y/n) press further into the door. She knew it. She felt so stupid for even asking when she knew deep down that her book wasn't anywhere to be found, because of her mother in law.
(Y/n) worked from home, she kept all of her notes in two separate notepads which were always either in her and Jim's bedroom or tucked under her arm. (Y/n) needed her blue notebook with the sparrows drawn on the cover, it was all her dates and details and facts that she had to type up and send across to her boss this week.
The last time she saw her notebook was yesterday when she had been writing in the living room. Now the book was gone, and (Y/n) knew exactly who had moved it. Jim had been at work all day yesterday and he had gone again this morning. There was no way he would of moved it when he came home and went straight for a shower before climbing into bed. He didn't go in the living room.
"No, I don't think so. Why, is it important?"
She knew it was. Karen knew it was important, if (Y/n) didn't have those notes she would have to start from scratch and it would delay her and cause her to be reprimanded by her boss.
"It- it's my work, I need that book." Her voice was unusually quiet and she could feel defeat clawing at her throat.
"Oh, well I haven't seen it."
Nodding, (Y/n) turned on her heels and walked down the hall. She wasn't standing here arguing. She was going to search the house from top to bottom and if that made her look like an idiot or stressed her out then so be it, because she needed that notepad.
The living room had already been searched. (Y/n) had moved every book and magazine, looked beneath the sofa and the cushions and the bookcase. She looked everywhere she could think of.
She made her way into the kitchen and scanned over the few papers on the table, again. She looked in the little wooden crate on the windowsil that was for important letters and bills. She looked in the messy drawer and the cupboards.
Sweat rolled down the back of her neck and adrenaline sparked in her stomach that was churning and rotating awfully. She felt like she was going to be sick. What was she going to do if she couldn't find her notes? She was going to have to work late into the night to redo everything. (Y/n) would have to rewrite her notes and then type up her essay and her notes and then she would have to edit and make sure everything was ready to send off.
Grabbing a few wrappers from the counter, (Y/n) scrunched them up in her hands and started to tidy up. She may as well tidy the house as she tore it apart looking for what she needed, something (Y/n) wasn't so sure she was going to find.
She flicked open the bin, about to toss a few bits in until something caught her eye.
A sparrow.
A flash of blue.
(Y/n) leaned down, dragging her fingers through the bin with a wince, trying not to touch last night's dinner or the cereal from this morning.
She choked on a sob that had her lips curdling like sour milk when her fingers curled around her notepad and she wrenched it out of the bin.
The book was lathered in sauce from last night. Splotches of milk painted the cover and the pages were crinkled, cracking and sticking together.
(Y/n) couldn't stop the tears falling down her face or the way her chest shuddered and jumped when she looked through the pages. All her work. All those hours, those notes, the tentative, neat handwriting. Stained. Destroyed. Ruined.
Karen had put her work in the bin. She had dumped it in the bin and threw the leftovers on top to try and hide it and keep (Y/n) from realising where all her hard work had gone.
Why did she have to do this?
"Hey baby, what're you doing?" Jim leaned against the doorway to the nursery, glancing his eyes around the room. The walls were still pale magnolia from when they bought the place and moved in last year. They hadn't decided what colour to paint the nursery yet, all they knew was that they didn't want this pale, bland colour when the baby was born.
(Y/n) was five and a half months along now so anytime soon, Jim would get ready to paint the nursery and he would start setting up the crib and units soon too.
His arms folded over his chest and his head leaned against the door while he looked down at his wife.
She was knelt on the floor, a few onesies and bibs and little trinkets surrounding her.
A fond look swarmed through Jim's eyes, right until his wife turned around. The smile faded from his lips and the warmth in his eyes turned ice cold the moment he noticed the tears streaking down (Y/n)'s face. Her eyes were overwhelmed with tears, the colours blurring together and meshing around her pupils that were as wide as saucers.
He noticed the puffy look beneath her eyes and the way her lower lip kept wobbling as she tried to draw in a proper breath.
"Hey, hey what's the matter?"
He moved before he could stop himself and he slumped down to his knees beside her, trying not to kneel on any of the clothes scattered around. What had happened while he had been at work? They had been to their scan last week and everything had been fine with the baby, so he hoped she wasn't upset or panicking about the baby.
He reached out for her hands and gently pulled them onto his lap, smoothing his thumbs over the back of her hands while he waited for her to explain so he could help.
"I'm not doing this anymore Jim." (Y/n) pulled her hands away from his touch so she could run her fingertips up and down her face. It didn't matter how many times she tried to swipe away the tears, more drenched her face and had her breath bubbling and catching in her throat.
"What, doing what? Baby what's happened?" He tried to reach out for her again but (Y/n) moved faster.
"Look."
Something twinged in (Y/n)'s chest like her heart had physically been slashed when she looked across the floor. She scrunched up the blanket in her hands and roughly tossed it at Jim, sending him leaning backwards when it hit him in the chest.
Jim's stomach pulled inwards and his lips parted when he looked down at the blanket.
It was the one (Y/n)'s grandma had knitted when she was little. The blanket was a worn shade of white with a deep blue ribbon stitched around the edging. (Y/n) had had this since she was little and she had started adding a few flowers and embroidery stitches to update it ready for when she had her baby to pass it onto.
It was ruined.
The bottom corner had either been cut or pulled and the wool was unspooling. Half the blanket had been pulled so the woven stitches were undone, leaving a tangled mess of wool attached to what was left of the blanket.
"What happened?" Jim swallowed harshly as he held up the blanket and looked it over.
It would take a skilled knitter to fix this and even if someone could fix the blanket, there would be telltale signs and stitches that showed it had been wrecked and patched back together.
This was important to (Y/n). She didn't have a lot to remember her grandma by and their baby would never know her. (Y/n) wanted to give their child something that would remind them of someone they would never know, and now it was damaged, possibly beyond repair. "I- I found it in the drawer like this."
"Maybe… maybe it got caught in the drawer-"
"It's been cut! She's cut it. Jim, you- you know what this meant to me." (Y/n) swallowed harshly, wiping her hand beneath her eyes as she took the blanket back from Jim.
She wanted to throw it across the room, unravel it completely and toss it in the bin, but she couldn't. Her touch was unnaturally gentle as she folded what was left of the blanket and ravelled the loose wool around the blanket to stop it from unravelling further.
"And where's the stuff I bought?" (Y/n) motioned around to the clothing she had set out on the floor around them and Jim took a moment to look at it all.
There was the onesies Jim had picked out. A few items Deacon had given them last week when he and Annie went through their old baby clothes they didn't need for their girls anymore. And a few things from the others at Swat who had either donated their kids old things or like Chris, had gotten a few things to surprise Jim with.
But nothing (Y/n) had bought was here.
The few teddies she had picked out. The jumpsuits and mini dresses and tights she couldn't resist from town. The bibs and socks and little things to stock up on, everything (Y/n) bought, wasn't here.
"I- I don't know, maybe I tidied them in the chest of drawers-"
"Jim, everything I got is gone. The stuff you bought, that's all here. The things Deacon donated to us, that's here. Can't you see what she's doing to me?"
Jim ran his hand up and down his face, trying to take a deep breath but he found he could barely breathe at all.
This wasn't right. This couldn't be happening. It was just a mistake.
There was no way his mum would be this spiteful and vindictive. She wouldn't toss away the things that were bought for her first- and only- grandchild. She wouldn't cut up something so important to (Y/n) and unravel it like this to hurt her. She wouldn't wreck and mess with everything to wind (Y/n) up, Karen wasn't like that.
She was his mum. She loved him, she did everything for him, she had spent years in prison because and for Jim and now she was out. She wouldn't do anything to jeopardise what she and Jim and (Y/n) had here.
"No, mum wouldn't do this."
"No, no Jimmy I'm not doing this anymore, okay? You go to work but I work from home, I'm the one dealing with your mum's tantrums and her fits of rage. She doesn't like me, she scares me Jimmy and now she's doing this to me. What if it gets worse?"
(Y/n) couldn't do this anymore.
She had spent a month living with Karen and it was too long, too frightening. She had gone too far. First she had been rude when Jim's back was turned, then she started being horrid whenever she passed (Y/n). She had thrown (Y/n)'s notebook in the bin.
Karen watched as (Y/n) screamed and cried and sat on the living room floor for hours rewriting her notes and trying to salvage what she could from her notepad. Now Karen had gone as far as to throw things away that were for their baby, and she had destroyed something that was so important to (Y/n).
This couldn't keep happening. (Y/n) couldn't carry on like this, she wasn't staying home when Karen was here. She wasn't going to keep living like this with a cruel mother in law who was out to upset her.
(Y/n) was pregnant, she couldn't be stressed and panicked and she couldn't stay with Karen when she her temper was flaring. What if Karen lashed out at her? What if she went from verbally aggressive to being physical? What would (Y/n) do then?
"I'll talk to her."
With a broken smile and a shake of her head, (Y/n) moved her hand to Jim's shoulder and got up from their position kneeling on the floor.
"Thanks." The sarcasm dripping from her tone made Jim shiver and his expression dropped completely. He watched her leave the room, doing her level best to control her breathing and calm herself down before she made herself sick.
Part of (Y/n) didn't expect Jim to go and talk to his mum straight away. She thought he would take a few minutes to calm down, maybe look around the nursery and try to prove (Y/n) wrong and find all the clothes she couldn't find. But she heard him storm out of the nursery and when she looked over her shoulder, he was aiming for the spare room where his mum was since she wasn't at work today.
(Y/n) couldn't help herself.
She took a few seconds to calm herself down and clear the tears from her face before she backtracked and shuffled along the hall. She stayed close to the wall and a few feet away from the door. She didn't want to watch, but she wanted to know what Karen would try to say to defend herself.
She wished she hadn't listened.
Jim seemed to start off strong. He walked in there with the intention of telling his mum that whatever went on while he was at work needed to stop. But Karen's words were like a knife cutting right through (Y/n)'s stomach. She moved both hands down to cradle her stomach as she coiled in on herself.
"Jimmy she's pregnant, all those hormone changes and she's always so temperamental these days. She doesn't want me here, this is her way to get rid of me but I don't wanna leave you, baby. I'm finally out, finally able to be with my little boy again."
"I know, mum. I just… I need you both to get along, you're both my family and this is upsetting (Y/n). Try and be nice to her-"
"She needs to accept that I'm staying. We're meant to be together after all the lost time, Jimmy. (Y/n)'s just emotional."
"I guess."
Moving her hand to her mouth, (Y/n) swallowed down whatever cry was desperate to claw at her throat. She wasn't doing this anymore.
If Jim couldn't have her back and stand up for her, then she wasn't going to stay here. She didn't feel safe in her own home and that wasn't fair. (Y/n) had a right to feel safe where she lived and right now she didn't. She didn't want Karen living with them in the first place, but she didn't really have a choice.
If he wasn't going to help her and Karen was going to target her, then (Y/n) wasn't staying here with them.
Karen could have what she wanted. She could have Jim to herself until he worked out what he wanted to do and who he wanted to prioritise.
They were both his family but Jim was picking Karen over (Y/n), he was believing her over his wife and (Y/n) couldn't stay and be victimised any longer.
Staying wasn't an option.
***
"She doesn't wanna talk to you."
"Chris please. Five minutes, please?"
The pleading look in Jim's eyes won Chris over, although she still looked disappointed and angry.
Her lips rolled together, her eyes narrowed and she placed her hand on her hip before slowly opening the front door to let him inside. She didn't want to let him in, but he was here, again, and he was begging her. He had called and called (Y/n) and Chris but neither of them answered and this was the fifth day and he thought he was going to go insane.
He hadn't seen his wife in five days, that was almost a week. The longest he had gone without her was three days when Swat had been low on staff and everyone had been on a big assignment. This was different.
This was (Y/n) staying with Chris because she didn't feel safe in her own home and Jim wanted to do whatever he could to change that. He wanted his wife home where she belonged, not here with her best friend to get away from him.
Jim squeezed Chris's shoulder and bypassed her to get into the living room where he could see his wife.
He bounded up to her before she got the chance to see who it was and before (Y/n) could try and get up, Jim was already plonked down on the sofa next to her. He reached out and clamped his hand down on her wrist, his touch comforting but desperate at the same time as he leaned forward until there was barely an inch of space between them.
His knees bumped into (Y/n)'s thigh and he was close enough that (Y/n) could feel each rapid breath fanning against her cheek.
She didn't want to look at him. She didn't want to turn and see those puppy dog eyes that could win him whatever he wanted. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction. But when Jim tilted his head down and attached his lips to her shoulder, (Y/n) shivered.
She felt his hand let go of her wrist and slide round to cradle her lower back and when his other hand moved to squeeze her thigh, (Y/n) finally looked down at him. He was glued up against her side, his chest pressing into her arm, his fingers twitching against her skin like he feared she was a figment of his imagination and would fade away any moment.
"Baby…"
"Why're you here?" (Y/n) couldn't hide the pain from her voice and she couldn't stop her eyes from welling up with tears when Jim flinched against her. He squeezed her thigh tighter, shifting his hand up higher, testing the waters to see if she would throw away his touch or not.
"You shouldn't be here, you should be at home-"
"Not while she's there." (Y/n) didn't want to stay with Chris, she didn't want to impose on her friend, but Chris had more than welcomed her to stay.
She was the one who told (Y/n) she couldn't go home until Jim realised just what his mother was doing. The whole team knew how crazed Karen was becoming and they understood that (Y/n) was being targeted, she wasn't losing her mind or imagining anything or overreacting. Chris told (Y/n) to stay with her as long as she needed until things settled down and Karen was sorted out.
"Baby, come home. I've talked to mum, properly, I swear, it's sorted now."
(Y/n) wanted to believe him, she really did. She wanted to let herself sink into his touch and the way his lips were feathering across her neck, feeling her in without having to do much at all. But if Jim was just saying this to get her to come home, (Y/n) couldn't do that. She had to know that he was taking her seriously and he would listen if anything else happened.
"You didn't listen to me, Jim. She called me hormonal, and you agreed." Tears welled up in her eyes as she gripped his chin and tilted his head away from her neck so they were face to face. "I can't come home if you won't take me seriously."
"I'm looking at flats."
"What?"
His words sent shivers running up and down (Y/n)'s spine and she couldn't help but lean away from him. What on Earth did that mean? Was he truly believing his mum over her? Was this it? Had Karen well and truly got in the way of their marriage like she strived to do?
"Mum staying with us was- is, temporary. I'm trying to find her a place of her own, somewhere nearby. Then she's still close to home, but we have our own space again, just you, me and our girl."
His mum living with them had never been a permanent thing. Jim only agreed because his mum needed a place secured or else they wouldn't approve her for parole. She had to have that security and Jim couldn't let her rot inside a day longer. But he had always had the intention of helping his mum find her own place.
It wasn't healthy for her to be living with them and be so attached to Jim and he and (Y/n) needed their own space now they were extending their family. He was trying to get his mum a place of her own as soon as he could so they could all have a better, healthier relationship together.
When he shifted his hand up from (Y/n)'s thigh to trace her bump, (Y/n) couldn't help the tear that slid down her face.
He could feel her resolve melting away when he started to trace designs across her stomach with his fingertip.
Five days had started to feel like five weeks away from (Y/n) and all the team knew something had been up. Chris was the only one who knew the details, but all of them saw how tightly strung up Jim had been. He felt like he had been having withdrawel symptoms when he came home to an empty bed and he couldn't have his arms around (Y/n) or his hand on her stomach.
"Come home." Jim didn't take his hand away from her stomach, but the way his nose twitched and his lips drew to one side told (Y/n) he was one minute away from crying.
She saw a tear slither down his cheek when she nodded and that was all Jim needed to practically push her back into the sofa and steal a starved kiss from her.
She could feel his teeth grazing her lower lip and the way he smiled into the kiss as he took all the breath from her lungs, leaving her starving and lightheaded. He wanted both his girls to come home, he missed them more than any words could say and he wouldn't let this happen again.
He would listen next time.
***
A quiet, lulling hum filled the nursery as (Y/n) moved towards the window. She could faintly hear the music channel playing on the tv downstairs and it was loud enough for her to know what song was playing and to hum along to the music.
Her head ticked from side to side as she looked up at the window frame with pursed lips and narrowed eyes.
They had decided on a pale shade of lilac for the nursery with a bleached white ceiling. The colour looked beautiful and when the sunlight hit the walls just right, (Y/n) could almost see sparkles twinkling off the walls. They had finished the second coat over the weekend while Jim was off and now (Y/n) was just adding a few more details.
They still had another three and a bit months left until their girl would be here, but Deacon had told them it was better to plan ahead and be prepared. According to him, the last few months would go by in a flash and they didn't want to be rushing about trying to sort everything at the last minute.
Grabbing the chair from the corner of the room, (Y/n) dragged it across and took her time climbing up.
Her fingers scrunched around the dusty white curtains that had a mixture of burnt orange, beige and bright pink flowers painted across them. She unclipped one end of the curtain pole and started feeding the curtain rings on.
Once these were up, the only things left to do in the nursery was to put up some shelves, assemble the crib and sort the changing table. Then they would be well and truly prepared.
"What have you said to Jimmy?"
A gasp tumbled past (Y/n)'s lips and she wobbled, quickly regaining her balance before she toppled off the chair.
She fed the last ring onto the pole before she glanced behind her over her shoulder.
Karen didn't look happy.
The elder woman stormed into the nursery she had barely looked at since they started decorating it. If (Y/n) had thought before that Karen wasn't interested in her grandchild, she well and truly understood now. She could see the way it started to gnaw at Jim when they had been getting things ready and Karen could barely manage a smile. Whereas everyone down at Swat was more than delighted and listened intently if Jim ever talked about the baby.
"Excuse me?" (Y/n) took a deep breath to steady herself for the upcoming argument and she pressed her hand to the wall to climb down off the chair.
She had no idea what Karen was going on about and she was sure whatever it was, Karen was blowing it out of proportion. But she just had to do this now, when Jimmy was still at work. He would be coming home around about now, why couldn't she just wait until he got back so they didn't have to argue any more?
She had promised Jim she wouldn't argue or upset (Y/n) or fight with her. (Y/n) knew she wouldn't stick to it.
"He's looking at flats. He's trying to find a flat for me, he wants me to move out before the baby comes. What have you said to him? Why are you trying to get rid of me, he's my son I've sacrificed everything for Jimmy so I can be with him now. Why do you have to get in the way?"
"Karen calm down-"
"Calm down? When you're taking my son from me?!"
(Y/n) coiled her arms to her chest and took a strangled breath when Karen grabbed the nearest object and threw it her way. Thank God it happened to be one of the teddies Chris had given them, but seeing what she had thrown only riled Karen up even more.
She reached out for one of the coat hangers on top of the chest of drawers and launched it so hard and fast (Y/n) barely had time to move.
She bit back a scream when the plastic hanger collided with the edge of the windowsil and snapped on impact.
What the Hell was she doing?
"He's my husband, I'm not taking him from you. But you… you can't think that it's normal to live with us forever? We're having a baby, things are gonna change." (Y/n) held her hands out in front of her as if trying to act peaceful as going to make a difference when her mother in law was on the warpath.
"You little hustler. You're turning my son against me and I won't have it." Karen's voice heightened until she was at the point of screaming and (Y/n) winced at her pitch and tone.
She sidestepped and slumped into the wall when Karen tossed a paintbrush her way and when she threw the paint tray to the floor, (Y/n) cowered back.
She was aiming things at her. If Karen got hold of the screwdriver set or something heavy, she could aim it just right and cause (Y/n) some real damage.
"You and that bloody baby are destroying him."
Would Karen go as far as to hurt the baby? (Y/n)'s hand moved down to her stomach at the thought and she winced, feeling the baby give out a strong kick. She had no idea if Karen would try and come over to hit her or push or slap her or toss something directly at her, but she didn't want to find out.
She was scared. Karen had killed her husband. She had been so riled up and defensive over Jim, wanting to protect him that she had shot her husband in cold blood. Of course she had her reasons, she was a battered wife protecting her only son. But now, Karen was thinking of (Y/n) and the baby as a threat. A threat to Jim.
(Y/n) needed Jim to come home. She needed to go get her phone and call him to find out if he was on his way home or not. She couldn't stay here and argue with Karen who was only getting angrier by the second. Being here with her wasn't safe for (Y/n) or her unborn baby.
"You need to stop."
She kept one hand on her stomach and held the other out towards Karen, both to try and calm her down and to keep a good distance between them both.
Pushing forward, (Y/n) quickened her steps in haste and cowered down when Karen screamed. She bolted past her, giving Karen a nudge to get her out of the doorway so (Y/n) could fly past her.
Her phone was downstairs. She had to call someone. She had to get hold of Jim or Chris or even Hondo at this point, just someone that would help and not think she was overreacting or being silly. She had to keep as much distance between her and Karen as possible.
"Where are you going? You can't do this to me and Jimmy, he's my son! You hear me, he's mine."
(Y/n) couldn't help the scream that slipped past her lips when she felt a hand smashing against her shoulder. She wasn't sure whether Karen tried to punch her or grab at her, but either way it threw her off balance and had her falling into the wall that stopped her from going down on her knees.
She flung her arm out behind her, managing to scratch her nails along Karen's arm and push her back. She had to get away from her. She had to get downstairs and either get her phone or get out the house. Karen was trying to attack her.
"Get the Hell away from me!"
"Does your girl know you've invited us all round?" A wide grin spread across Luca's face as he leaned forward and grabbed Jim by the shoulders, giving him a little shake.
He pushed down on Jim, nudging the shorter man forward while Luca practically jumped up and down behind him like an excited child. It had been a while since the whole team gathered together to hang out after work, and this was the first time they would see Jim's new home.
Luca had spent almost five months living with Jim and (Y/n) two years ago in their old apartment. They had been gracious enough to put up with him for that long and let him stay and he had loved being around two of his closest friends.
"Nope, she wants to see you all though." Jim fished his keys out his pocket while Luca continued to shake him back and forth.
He could hear Chris laughing somewhere behind them and Hondo and Deacon were close by.
They had all agreed to come over for a few drinks, and Hondo and Deacon were more than willing to help Jim set up the crib he had been having trouble with over the weekend. They knew what they were doing, Hondo was good at fixing things and Deacon had four kids, he had done this before. Luca was the only one who wouldn't be so good with sorting out the furniture so he would stick to sorting the music. Chris knew what she was doing, but she was here to see (Y/n) more than to do any DIY.
"Course she does, she's missed us." Hondo grinned and shimmied his back pack higher on his shoulder as Jim finally reached the front door. They watched him make a big effort to wave his hands in front of the house, showing off with a cheesy grin before he unlocked the door.
Jim had never heard a scream quite like the one that hit his ears when he walked over the threshold.
It was so perfectly timed to when he walked inside that he thought for a moment that someone was playing some sort of prank on him. Like he had stepped on a trip wire and a fake scream sounded through a megaphone.
But he knew it was real.
He knew that scream was real, and he knew exactly who it belonged to.
The clouting thud that followed had Jim shivering and backing into Luca who in turn took a step back over the threshold. None of them knew what they had walked into. Had they interrupted a break in? Had some sort of accident happened? Had they done something by walking in at this exact time?
"No!"
"Oh Jesus- someone call 911!" Luca flapped an arm behind him, hitting any of his team that he could to make them listen while his other hand fisted Jim's shirt as if to make sure he hadn't vanished or fallen down with shock.
Jim bolted forward, feeling the team close behind him but he didn't care. He wrenched out of Luca's grip and took double strides until he was five paces up the stairs.
(Y/n) had fallen.
His left arm bashed into the bannister while his right knee bent out and punctured into the wall, wedging himself in place on the stairs so he could find his balance without falling down.
His hands were quick to find her neck, his thumbs smoothing over her jaw as he tried to be as gentle as he could to tilt her head away from the bannister. Her temple had been pressing down on the wooden beam until Jim turned her so she was facing him.
"Baby? Baby, oh come on, open your eyes for me." Words flurried past his lips before he could realise what he was saying.
His fingers pressed down into her neck and he winced, hoping he wasn't hurting her when he realised the grip he had but he couldn't let go. His whole body was shaking as he looked over his wife.
She was laid in the middle of the stairs, crumpled at an odd angle. Arms bent and stuck near her waist, legs curled awkwardly with one foot pressed against the opposite wall and the other hanging off a lower step. But she wasn't moving. She wasn't opening her eyes like Jim was telling her to. She wasn't even moving her head or acknowledging him.
"She's not waking up." Panic entwined in with Jim's words and he glanced over his shoulder, tears already streaming down his face as he begged any of his team to help him. To do something to make this better, to help his wife.
But when Jim glanced up, he wished he hadn't. He wished he never bothered lifting his head because the sight he was faced with made his stomach churn and had him gagging.
Karen.
His mum. Stood at the top of the stairs, one hand stretched out for the bannister to stabilise herself while her other hand was pressed against her mouth to cover her shock. She had tears streaming down her face and Jim realised she was shaking her head like she was trying to tell him she didn't do this. She hadn't wanted any of this to happen. But the guilt was written across her face.
The look in her watering eyes, the shock that was making her tremble back and forth like a lead. The way she was backing away from the stairs with little gasps and croaks.
She had pushed her.
When Jim heard Hondo's voice, it sounded faint and distant like his leader was calling from across the street instead of the bottom of the stairs.
Hondo's hand found Jim's shoulder and he quickly and expertly climbed over Jim and (Y/n), stepping over the entwined couple on the stairs with Luca hot on his heels. The pair of them bolted up the stairs towards Karen, both so they could stop her from trying to wander away and restrain her in case she tried to lash out at any of them.
"Do something." Jim's voice was oddly low but the desperation was clear. He spat the words with venom and he leaned into Deacon until the older man could see the fright blowing up his brown orbs.
Deacon rested his hand on Jim's shoulder and knelt beside him, leaning around to try and reach out for (Y/n). He pressed his hand to her neck to check her pulse before he gently peeled back her eyelid, but her eyes had rolled to the back of her head. Only allowing them to see the whites of her eyes with prominent veins crawling across them.
"Chris we need that ambulance." He glanced at the bottom of the stairs towards Chris. She had one hand tangled in her hair, a determined look on her face and tears in her eyes. Deacon couldn't remember the last time he'd seen Chris cry. "We can't leave her here like this, we need to get her down in the recovery position. Okay?"
He didn't want to wait for an ambulance with (Y/n) in this position, she was crumpled up like a piece of paper. It was going to hurt and if she had any internal injuries, lying like this was going to make them worse.
Deacon moved to try and hold her legs but Jim was moving off a different schedule.
He was already easing (Y/n)'s head onto his shoulder and curving her arms around her waist to keep them out the way so he could lift her up. Biting his lip, Deacon helped ease (Y/n)'s legs over Jim's arm and kept a hand on Jim's back to support him standing up on the stairs.
They walked backwards, slowly easing down the stairs until they were safely in the hallway and Deacon held the back of (Y/n)'s head and her waist to help lower her down.
"Airways are clear and open, breathing is good. Pulse is high… I can't tell if she's broken anything." Deacon tilted (Y/n)'s head down just in case she got a nosebleed or she started to throw up.
He tried to check her over but he couldn't see any obvious breaks or feel any dislocations. That didn't mean her ribs weren't broken or that she didn't have any internal injuries. They needed the paramedics here. Now.
"Two minutes," Chris gripped Jim's shoulder and gave him a little shake. She had dispatch on the line. They were already relocating an ambulance and a squad car down to them. This was an emergency and they would have help soon. Chris would ring Captain Cortez and tell her the situation, they would get hold of Karen's parole officer and sort this out for Jim so he could go with (Y/n).
"What have I done?"
"Street, you couldn't-"
"S-she told me. She told me she wasn't safe here, and I- I didn't- I never… God, what have I done?"
She told him she didn't feel safe with his mum. She told him everything his mum had done and he didn't believe her. He wanted to see the best in his mum, he wanted the family he hadn't had since he was eleven. He wanted a proper, loving, caring mum in his life, not one that sent him letters from behind a secured facility. He wanted his mum to get along with his wife and be involved in her granddaughter's life.
This wasn't how it was supposed to work. This wasn't the family Jim had tried to build. He hadn't kept his family safe. He hadn't listened to (Y/n) and now both his girls were in danger.
Why didn't he listen?
“Hey, I got you some ice cream”
You heard the voice of Jim Street next to you as he held the ice cream in front of your face making you smile.
“Thanks” you took the ice cream “What’s the occasion?”
“You were complaining how hot it was today, so I thought about getting you ice cream while we took a call.” He explained smiling.
You let out a dramatic gasp with an open mouth “Officer Street are you telling me that while your team was out there chasing a criminal you went to get ice cream?”
He chuckles at you “No, I meant after”
As you were eating the ice cream “Well it’s ice cream I don’t care if some bad guy was running around the city I have the best thing known to man.”
Street knew your love for ice cream so he knows this would make your day, Deacon and Hondo made their way to you as they heard your statement.
“Don’t let Higgs hear you saying that.” Hondo said as he chuckles.
“He would think you would sell the entire LAPD for ice cream if someone bribed you.” Deacon commented.
You looked at him as you ate “Bold of you to assume I wouldn’t do that.”
The man stood there shocked, that’s when you, Street and Hondo burst into laughter. All through the day after every call one of the guys got you something, you got ice cream, iced coffee, smoothie whatever it was it was cold and you were thankful for that. At the end of the day when your shift ended you were in pain as you were making your way out of the building, the guys were in front of you when Luca turned to look at you.
“What’s wrong with you? You don’t look good.” He tells you.
Everyone turned to look at you.
“I think all the things I got today kind of effected my stomach” you tell them “Next time I complain of the heat just throw me in an ice bath okay” you groan.
They laughed at your comment and Luca gave you a pill to help with the stomachache.
A/N: finally wrote something.
Unexpected (Part 2)
Rating: 18+ MINORS DNI
Warnings: mentions of sex, pregnancy, nausea, vomiting, medical issues.
Once things settled down and the hostages were rescued safely with only minor injuries and mental anguish, Hondo decided it was time to pull Luca. The team could finish up without him, it would be alright. Luca was working with Tan and Street. Hondo sighed, getting himself together. The adrenaline was still rushing through all of their veins. He walked over to the group.
“Luca, can we talk for a minute?”
The color drained from Luca’s face, his classic smile fading from his lips. Hondo noticed him swallow hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Yeah, boss. What’s up?”
Deep down inside, every bad scenario was running through Luca’s head. Was it you? Was it his parents?
Hondo’s eyes panned over to Tan and Street before they panned back to Luca. Everyone was wearing a worried look.
“It’s Y/N. Annie was on her way to the hospital with her. She passed out at home. I was waiting until things calmed down to pull you out as soon as I could.”
Luca’s blue eyes instantly filled with concern before he shook his head, attempting to pass by Hondo. “I gotta get out of here, man. Like now.”
“Listen, listen—I know, Luca.”, Hondo grabbed his shoulders, trying to center him.
Luca was fighting back tears—he couldn’t show his emotions. That’s not how this worked. He was taught to be tough—even as a child.
“Just be safe about it, man. She needs you.”, Hondo eyed Luca.
Luca couldn’t meet Hondo’s eyes. He only stared past him, however, Hondo could see the tears pooling in Luca’s deep blue eyes. He hated breaking bad news to his teammates. It seemed like only yesterday when Annie had her stroke and he had to tell Deacon. It was the worst part of being the team leader.
“I know.”, Luca breathed, voice barely above a whisper.
He rubbed his hand over his face. “What happened to her?”
Hondo shook his head. “Captain Cortez didn’t give me any other details.”
“I gotta get down there. I need to see her.”
“I know. One of us can go with you—if you want.”, Hondo added.
Luca nodded. “Okay.”
Hondo nodded, finally feeling better about Luca leaving. It was decided that Deacon would accompany Luca since Annie was at the hospital anyway. Hondo told them both to be careful and to keep the team updated on your condition. Luca didn’t even take time to change out of all his tactical gear. He just cared about seeing you—making sure you were okay. Deacon noticed him shifting in the seat nervously.
Luca felt like a cat on a hot tin roof. His face scrunched nervously and Deacon could tell he was spiraling.
“You okay, man?”
Luca looked over at Deacon. “Honestly…..no.”, he sighed.
Deacon nodded. “It’s okay not to be okay. I was beside myself when Annie was sick.”
Luca nodded. “I’m just thinking of everything that could be wrong with her.”
“It could be something minor.”
Luca scoffed. “Knowing my luck—no way. I mean she’s the best thing to ever happen to me, Deac. She understands me.”
Deacon kept driving, determined to get Luca there as fast as he could. “I know.”
Deacon didn’t check his phone after texting Annie that he was on his way with Luca. Traffic was horrible as per usual in LA. Deacon was a good driver, used to dealing with the congested highway.
“I could have driven.”, Luca grumbled, crossing his arms and shifting in the seat for the thousandth time.
“Sorry boss’s orders.”, Deacon shrugged playfully, a soft smirk crossing his lips.
Luca slumped over against the door, his anxiety getting the best of him. He thought he would handle stress better than this. And to be honest, he was a little angry at himself for getting so worked up. But this wasn’t just anything—this was you, the love of his life. He had never felt this way about another woman. He was going to marry you. And soon, especially after this. If everything was alright with you. His mind was racing with possibilities, going through any and every scenario.
Deacon knew what he was doing. He had done the exact thing when Annie was sick. He knew Luca felt guilty about leaving you and going to work. Deacon weaved in and out of traffic in an attempt to get to the hospital faster. Luca huffed and puffed, silently cursing the traffic and hitting the dashboard of his truck.
After what felt like a hundred years, they finally pulled up to the emergency room entrance. Luca hardly gave Deacon time to shift his truck into the park before he was jumping out. Deacon threw his hands up, making sure he was parked at least halfway decent before jumping out of Luca’s truck with the keys and running to catch up to Luca.
Luca cleared the automatic doors, instantly going to the registration desk.
“Can I help you sir?”
“My fiancee is here.”, Luca threw his hands down on the desk, tapping them nervously.
“Your name?”
“Dominique Luca. I should be on her paperwork.”
“What’s her name?”
Luca gave them your name. He wished in that moment you shared his. He wished he could call himself your husband.
“She’s in room three. I’ll take you both back there.”
Luca nodded as he looked back at Deacon.
“Want me to follow?”
“Yeah, man. It’s fine.”
Deacon nodded, imagining that Luca needed the emotional support. The registrar opened the door and met Luca on the other side before the door to the main emergency room opened. Nurses were running around like crazy, the desk right in the middle of the room. The registrar talked quickly to a nurse and she nodded, looking at him. Luca forgot he had left his SWAT stuff on.
“Officer Luca?”, the nurse asked, holding her clipboard.
Luca nodded.
“Your fiancée is in room three. The doctor will be in shortly to give you an update.”
“Great. Thanks.”
“No problem, follow me.”, she smiled softly and part of Luca wondered why she was smiling when his entire world felt like it was falling apart.
Part of him felt angry but he decided to hold it together. Deacon was behind him as they snaked their way through the emergency department to room three. The nurse grabbed the blue curtain, pulling it back.
“I have a visitor.”, she sing-songed.
Luca held his breath. Were you awake? All these questions were running through his head and he was finally going to get his answers. There were a lot of sounds in the emergency room from young children crying, people moaning in pain, and all the alarms going off constantly. But it was like everything went silent as he waited for the nurse to move back to reveal you. His mouth pursed open, trying to find the right words to say.
You were lying there with your eyes open, a small smile on your face. “Hey babe.”
Annie was beside you at the head of your bed, holding your hand. Annie was a great friend and you were very thankful for your SWAT family. Annie smiled, realizing Luca and Deacon had arrived. She let go of your hand and moved to give Luca room but he wasn’t waiting. He rushed over to you, tears forming in his ocean-blue eyes.
“Hey, baby. Are you feeling okay?”, he immediately asked, taking you in his arms.
Your heart monitor was beeping in the background but neither of you was paying attention to anything but one another. He kissed your head, brushing through your hair before you both smiled at one another.
“I’m so sorry for leaving you this morning.”
“Stop that.”, you whispered lightly. “Don’t beat yourself up. It’s not your fault.”
“It is—I should have stayed home with you. You needed me.”
“Luca.”
“Baby, I would have never forgiven myself if something happened to you.”
“But I’m gonna be okay.”
You smiled softly as you touched noses before sharing a small, soft kiss. Luca thought for a moment that he would never get this opportunity again. Your lips felt like heaven and he was so relieved.
“So everything is going to be okay?”
“Well—mostly.”
“Mostly?”, Luca questioned, concern evident in his voice.
“Sit down, babe.”, you rubbed his muscular arm gently.
This was it. Luca felt his heart plummet into his stomach. This was the moment you were going to tell him—you were going to give him the bad news. Luca swallowed hard, his legs beginning to feel like jello. He was never this easily rattled. But this was you. It was a whole different ball game, it was okay to be vulnerable. A lesson you had taught him. Annie helped by scooting a chair closer to the edge of the bed so he could sit down beside you. If only he knew what she did.
Luca took a seat, immediately grabbing your hand. Just as he did, the doctor pulled the curtain back, getting everyone’s attention.
“Officer Luca?”
Luca looked up at him, and the doctor immediately extended his hand. Luca took it, shaking his hand firmly. “Glad you could join us. I’ve already talked to your fiancee’ but she wanted you present as well.”
“Sorry—my job is a little demanding.”, Luca laughed nervously.
Luca’s blue eyes panned over to you, still managing to give you a soft smile as he squeezed your hand. His heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest.
“We’ll be outside.”, Deacon breathed softly, grabbing Annie’s hand and exiting the room as quietly as they both could.
“Alright, well. First of all, her iron level and blood pressure were low upon arrival to the emergency room which aided in her passing out at home. We have already given her an iron infusion along with some fluids but are admitting her overnight for observation. She will possibly need another infusion next week depending on the results of her blood work. On to other news,”, he smiled softly.
Luca was confused while he was smiling.
“Both of these were results of another finding.”
“And that is?”, Luca questioned bravely.
He needed answers.
“Congratulations Officer Luca. Your fiancée is pregnant. HCG levels are perfect for an estimated four weeks pregnant.”
Luca’s eyes widened before he turned to you. Did he really just hear what he thought he heard? It was the sentence he had waited forever to hear.
“Pregnant?”, Luca repeated.
You smirked softly. “Pregnant.”, you whispered.
“What? Babe!”, he exclaimed, a relaxed feeling finally washing over him as his lips curved into a smile and his blue eyes softened before he immediately took you into his arms.
You giggled lightly, wrapping your arms around him. It felt nice to be in his arms and you closed your eyes, taking in this feeling. You always did—just in case there was a day he didn’t get to come home. You hated to even think about the possibility but you knew that was part of what you signed up for. You always prayed for his safety along with his teammates. He pulled back to look at you, tears in his eyes.
“I’m really gonna be a dad?”
You nodded before both of you laughed easily.
“Congratulations to both of you. We will let you know as soon as we get you a room upstairs.”, the doctor smiled before leaving.
Luca turned back to look at you. “I can’t believe it—but I thought you wanted to get married first.”
You shrugged easily. “Life sometimes throws curveballs.”
Luca smiled, rubbing your cheek softly. “I never thought this moment was ever going to happen for me. I thought I was always going to be stuck as Uncle Luca.”
You both laughed before you began to speak. “You’re an amazing uncle, so I just know you’re going to be an amazing dad.”
Luca smiled brightly at the compliment. “I’m so happy.”
“Me too.”, you began. “But I’m not gonna lie I was a little anxious to tell you.”
“Me?”
You nodded again. “It’s just nerve-wracking. I mean I didn’t know if you wanted this right now.”
Luca sighed, shifting in the chair lightly. “I get it. I know you wanted to get married first. I mean—I know we weren’t being safe like we should but we weren’t exactly trying either.”
You giggled at the use of his terminology. “True.”
“Deacon and I even had this conversation this morning—and I thought there was no way in this world you were pregnant.”
“Me either, honestly.”
“But I’m thrilled. I can’t wait to be a dad—I can’t wait for you to start getting a little bump.”, Luca touched your flat stomach.
You placed your hand over his.
“Maybe we should move our wedding up.”, you smirked.
“Sounds good. You tell me a date and we will make it happen, babe.”
You all shared another kiss before you began grinning widely.
“Maybe we should let Deacon and Annie back in.”
“Yeah, maybe.”, Luca laughed.
Luca let go of your hand just long enough to walk to the curtain and open it, telling Annie and Deacon they could come in. They followed him back inside the small curtained room. You could only hope that your and Luca’s relationship could be like Deacon and Annie’s—maybe even better. So far, he had exceeded every expectation. Deacon smirked at Luca and you were unsure if Annie had clued him in.
“So Luca, was I right? Is there a chance we will have a fourth-generation SWAT member?”
Luca smirked back, elbowing Deacon playfully. “Maybe.”
You and Annie looked at one another, laughing while not being surprised by their horseplay.
“Yeah, you were right Deac. I’m gonna be a dad.”
There were obvious tears pooling in his blue eyes and Deacon couldn’t help but smile as he pulled Luca in for a hug, patting his back. Annie couldn’t help but give a soft smile before her eyes panned over to you. You couldn’t help but notice the tears beginning to pool in your own eyes watching how excited Luca was. This was better than anything you could have imagined.
“Well, guess it’s my turn to be an uncle now.”, Deacon smirked.
"How long until we can tell the rest of the team?", Annie chimed in.
You looked at Luca and he looked back at you, softly caressing his thumb over your hand.
"What do you think, babe?"
You giggled softly before noticing Hondo, Chris, Jim, and Tan walking through the emergency room through the small slit in the curtain. "I'm thinking soon."
Proud Boyfriend
summary: even though you told deacon not to tell anyone, street finds out that you wrote and published a book, meaning the rest of the team quickly finds out as well. when you come to visit deacon at work, you find out that they know, allowing deacon (and the rest of the team) to praise you for all your hard work.
word count: 1.3k
A/N: this was requested by @twilightlover2007, this was so fun to write, i really hope i did the idea justice! enjoy<3
After finishing their takedown, Street and Deacon stand at their lockers, packing up their bags to go home. As Street says a quick goodbye to Deacon, he looks down at Deacon’s bag, noticing a book peeking out of it. He smirks, making a quick grab for it, looking over it.
“What’s this, Deac? Didn’t know you were a reader,” he teases as Deacon turns around with wide eyes, noticing what he was holding.
“Nothing. It’s just a book.” Deacon replies, trying to take it back as Street flips the book back over to look at the cover. He raises a brow, looking up at Deacon, a small smile forming on his face.
“Wait, did your girl write this?” Street says in disbelief, as Deacon sighs, shaking his head, a small smile making its way onto his face.
“Yeah, she’s been working on it for a while. Finally got it published. But she didn’t want me to say anything. Said something about it being awkward if anyone hated it, which is ridiculous,” he states. “I read it. It’s amazing,” he adds, nodding his head, his smile growing wider.
Street laughs at your reasoning, shaking his head as he flips the book open, glancing over a few of the pages, Deacon watching proudly as he crosses his arms across his chest, standing taller.
“Look, don’t let her know I told you. And don’t tell anyone else, okay?” Deacon whispers as he hears Hondo, Chris, and Tan’s voices getting closer to the locker room.
“Don’t tell anyone what?” Tan teases, smirking as they walk in, walking up to the two as Deacon grabs the book back, trying to put it in his bag.
Hondo raises his hands in mock surrender, noticing Deacon’s movements as Chris and Tan look over at Street, raising a brow.
Street shrugs, smiling at both of them, shutting his locker. Chris moves into his path to the door, crossing her arms, giving him a look. Street sighs, looking back at Deacon quickly before turning back to Chris.
“Deacon’s girl wrote a book.” he mutters, defeated. Chris scoffs, turning to Deacon, laughing softly.
“Why didn’t you wanna tell us? That’s great!” she says, Tan and Hondo nodding in agreement.
“Yeah, man. I’d be telling everyone I know. I’m kinda surprised you’re not,” Tan tells Deacon, patting him on the back.
“Believe me, if she’d let me, I would tell everyone. She made me promise not to. I’ve seen how hard she worked on it, and you should’ve seen how happy she was when she finished it. I even bought 10 copies when it was published, but I didn’t tell her. I wanna support her, but she’s being really lowkey about it, around people she knows, at least.” he explains, rubbing the back of his neck, smiling softly, finally able to talk about it with someone that will listen to his praise.
“That’s awesome. If I wrote a book, I’d make everyone I know buy a copy.” Tan jokes, opening his locker to grab his bag.
“Who’s writing a book? If it’s an autobiography you better make me look good,” Luca jokes, walking into the room, patting Tan on the back as he walks by.
“Deac’s girl wrote a book,” Street says, crossing his arms over his chest as he turns to Luca.
“What? No way! That’s great, man,” he tells Deacon, wrapping his arms around him for a short hug.
“Yeah, I’m proud of her. She’s always wanted to be a writer. Honestly, I was gonna tell her it was good no matter what, but it’s really well done. I hope she changes her mind so you guys can read it.” Deacon replies, face growing hot, thinking of you.
“Oh, and before we go, I have to show you what we found on our other target. We were able to find his ex-girlfriends address, it looks like that was his old stash house. There’s some stuff we found that forensics wants us to see,” Hondo explains, the team nodding, grabbing their bags before following him to the lab.
As they walk out to the main area of the building, Deacon turns, seeing you walking towards him, a tupperware container in your hand.
“Hey, you said you might have to work late tonight, so I brought you some dinner just in case,” you explain, leaning into his embrace as he wraps an arm around your shoulders, kissing your forehead quickly before you back up.
You’re met with a chorus of hellos from the squad. You smile, waving at them all, saying a quick hi back.
“Hey, I heard about your book, congrats! When do we get to read it?” Luca says, taking a few steps towards you, wrapping you in a tight hug. Your eyes widen as he says this, hugging him back stiffly, giving Deacon a glare over Luca’s shoulder.
Deacon smiles nervously at you, before looking down, fingers moving to pinch the bridge of his nose.
“Sorry, Street saw it in my bag, so he had to tell everyone.” he explains, looking back up at you sheepishly, before glaring at Luca as he lets you go.
“Was I not supposed to say anything? I thought you were excited?” Luca says, a confused expression making its way onto his face, his smile slowly disappearing as he looks between the two of you.
“Yeah, I guess you missed that part of the conversation,” Deacon says to Luca. “I’m sorry, I’m just proud of you, I wish you’d let me tell people,” Deacon says, turning to you. Your eyes soften as you smile softly, your face getting hot.
“He’s right. You should’ve seen his face; he just wants to praise his girl.” Hondo jokes, putting an arm around you, giving you a tight side hug. “If it makes you feel better, we’re proud of you too. We’d love to read it. Someday,” he says, giving you a wink as the rest of the team hums in agreement.
“Yeah. Maybe I’ll let you read it. But don’t expect me to give you a free copy,” you tease, biting the inside of your lip as you fight back a smile.
The team laughs, Street rolling his eyes, teasing you. “Of course. Wouldn’t expect a friends or family discount or anything,” he says, Chris punching his arm, shaking her head, smiling.
You laugh, looking down, feeling your chest swell with pride and excitement. You didn’t know they would want to read your book that bad. You look at Deacon as he smiles at you proudly, arms crossed across his chest, standing tall. He nods his head, a hopeful expression on his face.
“We’re not done with this though. We’re talking about why you had a copy of my book here when you know how Street is,” you tease, pointing a finger at Deacon’s chest as Street scoffs, feigning offense.
Deacon laughs, pulling you into his chest again, hugging you tightly. You put your head on his chest, letting out a long exhale, your smile growing.
“I’m so proud of you, baby.” He whispers in your ear, loud enough for Hondo to hear from beside you.
“We all are. You’ve got yourself a talented woman there, Deac.” he says, looking at Deacon, a smirk on his face.
“I know,” he says, kissing the top of your head, “I know.” he says quieter, loosening his grip on you, looking down at you with his eyes full of admiration.
“Hondo just has to show us something in forensics and then I’ll be ready to go. Do you wanna wait and we can go out and properly celebrate your book?” Deacon asks you. You nod, smiling softly.
“Fine,” you say, faking annoyance, leaning up to kiss him softly. “I’m gonna go say hi to Cortez quickly. Come get me when you’re done.” You tell Deacon, turning to walk to her office as Deacon watches you walk away.
“You did good, Deac.” Tan says, wrapping an arm around his shoulder as they begin walking to the lab.
“Yeah. She doesn’t happen to have a sister or anything, does she?” Street teases, which earns him a shoulder check from Deacon as the rest of the team laughs.
Hero
For you, @spnshortcake !
You pulled your husband’s body close to yours by his belt. He cradled your face in his hands, giving you a deep, loving kiss.
“Be safe today, baby.” You said to him once he pulled away.
He responded with a smile, “Everyone goes home, darling.”
You and Deacon were both preparing to leave for work, standing between your vehicles parked in your garage. He opened your car door for you to get in. Once you were buckled, he leaned in and kissed you again. “I’ll see you tonight?”
“I will be right here, waiting on my prince charming.” You winked at him as he shut your door and you parted ways.
Deacon walked into the station with his duffel bag on his shoulder. He greeted his team mates and made himself a cup of coffee before meeting in the debrief room prior to their shift starting. Once the team was seated around the table, Hicks stepped into the room and began a rundown of what to expect for the day. Right before the meeting wrapped up, Hicks’ cell phone rang. He answered it and quickly told the team to suit up as all their pagers went off simultaneously.
“There’s a hostage situation at a bank downtown.” Hicks announced.
A few minutes later, the team was in Black Betty, heading towards their call.
“Hostage situation, one confirmed fatality, a few other injured is what we know so far.” Hondo said as he began reading the notes that came across his work phone to give his guys a rundown of what they were heading into.
Hondo made it to the bottom of the notes and saw the address of the bank they were going to. “Deacon?”
“Oh my god.” Deacon interrupted. He had beat Hondo to the bank’s address in the notes. He immediately pulled out his personal cell phone and tried to call you, only to be greeted by your voicemail.
Hondo knew you hadn’t answered as he watched his teammates face turn pale and tears well up in his eyes.
“She is okay, brother. We are going to take care of her, but I need to know you are safe to go in here with us.” He leaned forward, meeting Deacon eye to eye.
Deacon looked at him and nodded, wiping his eyes. “She knows what to do, she’s trained with us before; we’ve taught her what to do…” He spoke words, yearning for his heart to believe what his mouth was saying. “I’m good, Hondo. It’s my job to protect her.”
S.W.A.T. arrived on scene to law enforcement still getting a perimeter set up outside of the bank. The team lined up at the front and back entrance of the building, preparing to enter once given the go ahead.
Deacon was sure his heart rate was 180. He was scared as hell on what he might walk into. He knew you had been faced with losing him multiple times – how many calls had involved him getting shot at and he was unable to communicate with you until hours later? It was a part of the territory that came with being a SWAT wife. Even though he had put himself in your shoes before, or at least tried to, he had never actually been in your shoes and it made him nauseated at the thought of losing you. He made a brief mental note to love on you extra once you were safe in his arms.
Deacon lined up behind Hondo, preparing to enter the building.
Once they entered, Deacon took lead. One masked man laid on the floor in front of the teller’s desk, dead. There was no one behind the teller’s desk. A second body was found in the hallway leading to a back area of the bank. Deacon was initially unable to determine if the second person was a suspect or an employee, but soon noticed a firearm laying several feet away from him and decided that the dead man was likely a suspect.
The rest of the bank was cleared except for the conference room. It was the last hallway and room to be cleared. The team approached the door. Deacon took his stance on the side of the door.
“LAPD,” Deacon announced, his voice deep and loud.
“David?!” A weak voice came from the other side of the door.
As soon as Deacon heard your voice, he immediately opened the door, gun aimed, his teammates behind him.
20 David entered the room to find you kneeling on the ground with your knee in the groin of one of the bank tellers who had gotten shot. Your knee was holding pressure to gun-shot wound to keep him from bleeding out of his femoral artery, where he had been struck. Your 9mm was pointed right back at the SWAT team. Other bank employees were also cowered in the corner of the room to your left.
As soon as you saw your husband and his team, you lowered your weapon and began sobbing.
“The shooters are dead,” you said through sobs and hyperventilating, “We need EMS for him.” You nodded your head towards your coworker whose life was in your… knee.
“Oh my god,” Hondo said as he looked around the room.
“Oh, baby…” Deacon said simultaneously. If you didn’t know better, you’d say your husband was also on the verge of tears as well.
The team began getting the other bank employees out of the building. Deacon kneeled in front of you and cradled your face.
“You did that?” he asked, nodding his head towards the door behind him, referencing the two dead gunman in the front of the bank.
You nodded with tears still streaming down your face. Deacon glanced down at the gun beside you and immediately recognized that it was your personal firearm.
“Why didn’t you tell me you carried in here?” He kept his voice low to avoid any unwarranted questions. You both knew you would soon face plenty of those.
“Because, I didn’t want you to ever be in trouble for knowing and not saying anything about it if… something like this were to happen.” You knew that anything you did could fall back on your husband if he was aware of it – another part of the SWAT wife territory. The last thing you wanted to do was to get him into trouble.
“Are you hurt?”
You shook your head.
“What happened?”
You sharply inhaled as you told your story for the first of many times that day.
You were in your office at the bank when you heard loud voices followed by screams followed by instructions to “shut the fuck up!” Your heart sank when your mind processed what was happening but you didn’t have much time because very soon after, you heard a gunshot followed by more screaming. You pulled your firearm out of the holster underneath of your shirt, aimed it, and immediately met a gunman in the hallway. When you saw his weapon being raised towards you, you didn’t hesitate to pull your trigger.
The man was dead before he hit the ground.
You quietly made your way to the front of the bank. You peeked around the corner to see a second gunman pacing back and forth with the bank employees on the ground. His back was towards you and you took the shot the second that you had it. He was also dead moments later.
You paused and looked around for a third gunman. When you didn’t see one after several moments, you stepped out into the front of the bank to find the teller shot. No one else was injured that you noticed.
You had two male customers drag the injured employee to the conference room after you instructed everyone else to make their way there. It was a central room in the building. You didn’t know what was waiting on the outside of the bank for all of you if you decided to leave so you didn’t want to send anyone out. You knew you could sit inside of the room with your gun to neutralize any further threats that may find you.
It was fourteen minutes from the time you shut and locked the door, knelt down with your knee in your coworker’s groin, steadied yourself and pointed your firearm at the door. However, it felt like eternity. You couldn’t express the relief that you felt when your husband was the first person you saw to walk through the door. It had felt like an eternity.
Deacon kissed your forehead moments before paramedics entered the room.
Security footage confirmed your story. Ever since you and David began dating, he always told you that everyone goes home when you told him to be safe. It was a theory you had adopted as well. That was why you decided to begin carrying your firearm inside of the bank with you every day at work. You knew if it was ever discovered, it would cost you your job, but what was the alternative? Losing your life? Jobs could be replaced. You or your husband could not be.
And your suspicion of the following repercussions were correct – you were let go from the bank for carrying inside against policy. But, as you walked out of the interrogation room, hand in hand with Deacon, you didn’t care. All that mattered was that you got to be with your husband.
The rest of the day was long and you didn’t walk out of your investigation until the early hours of the morning. You were walking hand in hand out of SWAT’s headquarters with Deacon. You had been able to shower at the station and Deacon had spare clothes you put on, but you were ready to get home, take a shower with your own things and slip into bed with your prince charming.
The day had been so exhausting that you didn’t have much energy left for any conversation with Deacon and he recognized that. He didn’t pressure you to talk as you arrived home, showered, and prepared for bed together. He climbed into bed beside you and pulled you into his arms. Even as you drifted off to sleep, you were intoxicated by your husband’s scent – his skin, his beard oil, his body wash, and the spritz of cologne he put on every night before bed simply because he knew that you loved it. You were so grateful for the safety of David’s arms.
The following morning, you woke up still entangled in your husband.
“Good morning, beautiful.” David said softly once he saw your eyes flutter open.
“Mmm,” you nuzzled into your husband’s neck. “Good morning, baby.”
He kissed your forehead. “What would you like to do today?”
“Is spending the day wrapped up in you an option?”
“It most definitely is if that’s what you want.” He rubbed your arm with his thumb. “Are you hungry?”
“Is my name Mrs. Kay?”
Deacon chuckled. “Let’s go get some food, then we’ll come home and snuggle until you get tired of me.”
“Never.”
Deacon took you to your favorite coffee shop for breakfast. He chose a booth for the two of you and sat down on one side before pulling you into the seat next to him. He turned so he could pull you close to him and keep his arm around you.
He was never one for much PDA so this took you slightly off guard, but you had no complaints. You were so thankful for Deacon after the previous day’s events. He peppered your cheek with kisses while you waiting on your food.
“You know…” Deacon started talking after your plates were placed in front of you. You turned so that you were facing your husband while sitting next to him. “I know that you face the fear of something happening to me every single day I go to work,” he brushed a piece of hair behind your ear. “But I have never truly understood what that fear felt like – until yesterday.”
You gave Deacon a small smile. He caressed your face with his hand, softly rubbing your cheek with his thumb.
“Baby, I don’t know how you endure that every day you watch me leave.”
You reached up and held Deacon’s wrist and leaned into his hand.
“Lots of prayer…” you started, “and it comes with the territory.” You winked at him.
“You know you’re a hero, right?” Deacon asked.
You scoffed, “Not hardly.”
“Baby, because of you all of your coworkers lived and went home yesterday.”
“I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you about taking the gun to work with me.”
Deacon chuckled. It was typical of you to disregard compliments that shined any light on you – it made you uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Kay, I am going to spend the rest of our lives never letting you forget how much I love you and how much you mean to me.”
He leaned in and kissed you. He managed to keep the kiss PG, but you felt every ounce of passion that filled the kiss.
You spent breakfast with your husband feeding each other pancakes and bacon, giggling and stealing quick kisses from each other.
“Will you go home with me?” Deacon asked flirtatiously as you finished your last sip of chocolate milk.
“Mmmm,” you smirked at him, “Going home with a good lookin’ man? Sounds like a fun time to me.”
“God, I love you,” he kissed you again.
You slid out of the booth, hanging onto your husband as you walked to the cash register together. Deacon paid for your food and drove you home together. When you got home, he opened your car door, helped you out, led you inside, and started your favorite movie before pulling you into his lap on your couch. You spent the day, snuggled up with your Sergeant.
Open your mouth and speak|Poly!20squad|
S.W.A.T x oc
I noticed that there is barely any poly! 20squad book, so why not write my own. Please feel free to message me if you have any requests.
Also please enjoy, and tell me what you think.
The neon lights of the city painted the pavement with a rainbow of shadows as the group of friends laughed their way down the crowded street. Music spilled from the bars and clubs, a mishmash of beats and voices that filled the air with an electric pulse. Jenny's heart raced with excitement, her eyes sparkling with the promise of a night to remember.
"Guys, let's go to the rooftop!" she exclaimed, tugging her friends along by the arms. They stumbled into an elevator, the laughter bouncing off the metal walls. The doors slid open to reveal a hidden gem of a bar, the city's lights glittering like a sea of diamonds before them. The cool breeze whispered sweet nothings into their ears, carrying the faint scent of distant oceans.
Jenny felt a buzz of excitement as they stepped out into the open space. The city looked so different from up here; the usual chaos muted into a serene mosaic of lights and shadows. Her friends gathered around a table, the conversation a delightful tapestry of giggles and gossip. The bartender slid over a round of drinks, the clinking of ice a soothing rhythm beneath the throb of the music.
But as the night grew later and the drinks stronger, Jenny's thoughts began to drift. She pulled her phone from her clutch, the screen lighting up like a beacon in the dark. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the string of unanswered messages from her lover, the unread count growing like a number on a broken slot machine. The texts grew more frantic, more pleading. "Baby, where are you? The guys are worried." Her fingers hovered over the screen, the urge to respond warring with the thrill of her newfound freedom.
The chill of the night air couldn't dampen the warmth of the whiskey as it slid down her throat. She looked around at her friends, their faces a blur of happiness and carelessness. How could they not see her slipping away? The weight of their indifference pressed down on her, a heavy blanket that smothered her voice. She'd been with Hondo, Deacon, Street, Chris, Tan, and Luca for three years—a secret garden of love that no one else could understand. But now it felt like a cage, the bars of their busy lives keeping her in, keeping her from living.
Her thumb hovered over the phone screen, the blue light casting a ghostly pallor on her cheeks. Each message was a shout from the void, a desperate attempt to reconnect with the people she'd chosen to let in. Yet here she was, feeling ignored and unwanted despite having so many lovers. It wasn't supposed to be this way. They were supposed to be a team, a family. But she was the one always left behind, the one they forgot to check on when the missions called or life took them away.
The whiskey burned a path down her throat, warming her from the inside out. Jenny knew better than to react like this. They were pretty overprotective of her, especially Hondo. He was the worst. So strict with her safety that it often felt like she was a precious china doll, too fragile to be allowed out of the house. But she was tired of being coddled and of being the one they had to keep safe.
"Hey, girl, are you ready to go?" Rachel's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Rachel's eyes were bright with excitement; her cheeks flushed from the cold and the drinks. She leaned over the table, her breath smelling faintly of mint and whiskey.
Jenny's hand tightened around her phone. "Actually, I think I'm going to crash at your place tonight," she said, her voice shakier than she intended. Rachel raised an eyebrow, surprise flickering across her features.
"What's up with you?" Rachel asked, her voice cutting through the din of the bar. "You okay?"
Jenny forced a smile, her heart racing. "Yeah, I just... I don't know. I think I've had a bit too much." She held up her nearly empty glass as if it were evidence of her overindulgence. "You know my pace is on the other side of town; I don't feel safe driving all the way back." It was a lame excuse, but Rachel seemed to buy it. The truth was, she didn't want to go home to face the music or to deal with the fallout of her night out.
The walk to Rachel's apartment was a blur of streetlights and the occasional distant siren. Jenny's mind swam with the weight of the unanswered calls and messages. She knew Hondo would be furious, his voice a thunderstorm of worry and accusations. Deacon would be disappointed, his silent treatment a knife that twisted in her gut. And the others? Well, she couldn't even guess what they'd say.
Morning sunlight peeked through Rachel's blinds when Jenny finally opened her eyes, a harsh reminder of the time she'd wasted. It was already 10 AM, and she had to be at work in an hour. Rachel's apartment smelled faintly of stale beer and takeout, a stark contrast to the crisp scent of the night before. The headache was a merciless drummer, pounding out a relentless rhythm in her skull.
Her stomach churned as she rolled out of bed, the reality of the situation crashing down like a hangover-induced wave. She was an assistant for Hicks, Hondo's boss, and she'd spent the night out partying instead of keeping her head down and staying safe. She'd never been good at following rules, especially not Hondo's. The thought of facing them today made her palms sweat.
"Hey girl, I got some outfits for you to wear," Rachel called from the other room. "I know you've got work in like an hour." Rachel emerged with a grin, arms laden with clothes. The sight of Rachel's kindness brought a fresh wave of guilt. Rachel had always been the wild one, the friend who knew how to have fun without the burden of a secret life weighing her down. Rachel didn't know about the missions, the late nights, or the danger that was a constant shadow in Jenny's life. Rachel knew her as just Jenny, not as the girl who had to be protected at all costs.
Jenny took the offered outfit with a grateful smile, trying not to let her thoughts show. "Thanks, Rach," she murmured, disappearing into the bathroom to change. The shower was a brief reprieve from her troubles, the water washing away the stickiness of the night. As she dressed, the fabric of Rachel's clothes clung to her like a second skin, a costume to play the part of a carefree woman without a secret in the world. She applied her makeup with shaky hands, the reflection in the mirror not quite matching the person she saw in her mind's eye.
The outfit did indeed show off all her curves, the tight dress hugging her in all the right places. She twisted this way and that, checking herself over. It was a stark contrast to the sensible pants and blouses she usually wore to work, but somehow it made her feel alive, like she had something to prove. With a deep breath, she stepped out of the bathroom, feeling Rachel's eyes on her. Rachel's mouth dropped open in shock, followed by a squeal of delight.
"Girl, you look hotter than a jalapeño in a sauna!" Rachel exclaimed, throwing her hands up in the air. "You're going to turn heads at work!"
Jenny rolled her eyes, a genuine smile tugging at her lips despite the impending dread of facing her lovers. "Thanks, Rach. I'll be sure to keep it professional."
The outfit did indeed show off all her curves, the dress a daring dance of fabric that clung to her like a second skin. She took one last look in the mirror, the stranger in the reflection giving her a nod of approval. With a deep breath, she hugged Rachel goodbye, the warmth of her friend's embrace giving her a semblance of strength. The door clicked shut behind her, and she was alone in the hallway, the cocoon of Rachel's apartment no longer shielding her from reality.
The city streets were bustling with life as she descended the stairs, the smell of fresh coffee and baked goods from the nearby bakery teasing her senses. The heels of her boots clicked against the sidewalk with a confidence she didn't quite feel, but she pushed onward, her mind racing with the potential conversations she'd have to navigate at work. The wind played with her hair, the cool air kissing her cheeks as she walked. She felt the eyes of passersby on her, and for a brief moment, she reveled in the anonymity of being just another woman heading to work on a Friday morning.
Her phone buzzed again in her pocket, a silent reminder of the unanswered messages. She pulled it out and stared at the screen, her thumb hovering over the call button. The digital clock at the corner of her screen taunted her, each second that ticked by a countdown to the inevitable. She had to tell them. They had to know she was okay. With a sigh, she swiped to answer and held the phone to her ear.
"Hello?" Hondo's voice was tight, the worry clear even over the phone line. "Hi," Jenny said softly, the weight of the night's events heavy on her chest. "I'm okay. I just needed some... space."
The silence that followed was deafening, the city's noise a stark contrast to the quiet in her ear. "Space?" he repeated, his tone a mix of confusion and anger. "What does that even mean, Jenny?" "I went out with Rachel," she said, her voice a whisper. "I just needed to... have some fun. You guys are always so busy, I thought you wouldn't even notice."
Hondo's sigh was a hurricane through the phone. "We're worried about you, that's all. You know we care." Jenny bit her lip, the guilt weighing her down. "I know. I'm sorry. I just... felt like I was losing myself in all of this." "Look," he said, his voice softer, "we're here for you. You're important to us. We need to talk about this."
Her stomach twisted into a pretzel at the thought of their conversation. "Everyone's on edge right now, and pretty pissed off, so be prepared."
The drive to work was a blur of traffic lights and honking horns, her thoughts racing faster than the cars around her. She parked in her usual spot, her hands shaking as she turned off the engine. The sun's glare through the windshield made her eyes water, as if it knew she had something to hide. She took a deep breath, the leather of the seat cool against her back. With a determined nod to herself, she stepped out into the bustling parking lot.
The moment she walked through the glass doors of the office, the cool air of Hicks's displeasure was palpable. His voice boomed down the hallway. "Jenny, I've been waiting for you! I need those files printed out, stat!" She quickened her pace, the click of her heels echoing off the marble floor. She didn't dare look around, knowing that the eyes of her colleagues were on her, whispering about her late arrival.
Her heart hammered in her chest as she reached her desk, the stack of files waiting like an accusation. She logged into her computer, her fingers fumbling over the keyboard. The screen was a blur of words and numbers, each one a reminder of the world she was hiding from her lovers. With a deep breath, she started the printer and watched as the pages began to spit out, one by one.
Suddenly, she felt eyes on her again. "Darling," she heard Luca's voice, and she turned around to find herself enveloped in his arms. He hugged her tightly, his embrace warm and comforting despite the chilly office air. She leaned into him, the scent of his cologne familiar and grounding. He kissed the top of her head, his voice a gentle rumble in her ear. "Baby, you had us scared. Where were you?"
Jenny's body went rigid, the weight of his concern heavy on her shoulders. "I'm sorry," she mumbled, her voice muffled against his chest. "I just needed some time."
Luca's arms tightened around her, his warmth a stark contrast to the chilly office air. "You know we'd drop everything for you, right?" He whispered, his breath tickling her ear. "You don't need to sneak around like this."
Jenny pulled back, a flicker of irritation crossing her features. "I wasn't sneaking around," she said, looking down at her desk. She felt his hand under her chin, lifting her gaze to meet his. His eyes searched hers, a blend of worry and love.
"You didn't tell us where you were going, baby," Luca said, his voice a gentle rumble. "We were worried. The job can wait, you know that."
Jenny nodded, a lump forming in her throat. She knew they cared, but she couldn't shake the feeling of being smothered by their concern. "I just needed a break," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the office's murmur.
"A break from what?" Luca's question hung in the air, the words a gentle challenge that made her heart ache. She didn't want to hurt them; she didn't want to make them feel like they were doing something wrong. But she also didn't want to live in their shadow, their fear dictating her every move.
"From the hovering," Jenny said, her voice a little stronger now. "From not letting me do things for myself. You guys ignore me sometimes, too wrapped up in your own worlds to remember that I have a life outside of this... mess." She waved her hand around the office, the files and computers a stark reminder of the mundane life they had to keep hidden from everyone else.
Luca's grip tightened, his eyes searching hers with an intensity that made her stomach flutter. "You're right," he said, his voice thick with regret. "We've been too caught up in our own shit. We don't want to stifle you, baby. We just want you safe."
Jenny nodded, her eyes misting. "I know," she whispered. "But sometimes it feels like you guys are smothering me."
Luca's thumb brushed her cheek, wiping away a tear that had escaped. "We'll try to be better," he promised. "We just want you to be happy."
Jenny nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. She knew they had good intentions, but their overprotectiveness had become a prison of love. "I know," she said, leaning into his touch. "I just... I need to feel like I'm part of the team, not just the one you all have to keep safe."
Luca's smile softened, understanding flickering in his gaze. "You are part of the team," he assured her, his thumb still brushing away tears. "But we also care about you too much to let you get hurt."
"Okay," she said, taking a shaky breath, "but the others are pretty mad."
Luca chuckled, the sound a low rumble that was as comforting as it was alarming. "I saw Tan and Street taking it out on the boxing bag early this morning."
Jenny's stomach twisted at the thought of them being mad, but she knew she had to face them. "What do I do?" she asked, her voice small and shaky.
"You just be you," Luca said with a wink. "They'll get over it. Besides, you've got me in your corner." He gave her a gentle squeeze before letting go, his hands lingering on her shoulders. "Now, let's get to work. We've got a meeting with Hicks in five."
Jenny took a deep breath and followed him into the conference room, her heart feeling heavier with each step. The room was filled with the usual suspects, all of them looking up as they entered. Hicks was at the head of the table, his expression stern as he talked about the latest mission. The moment he saw her, his eyes narrowed. She took her usual seat, her cheeks flaming under the weight of their stares. The air was thick with tension, the scent of coffee and stale cologne mixing with the anticipation of their next move.
Hondo's eyes bore into her, his jaw clenched tight. Deacon sat with his arms crossed, his eyes dark and unreadable. Street and Chris exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of anger and confusion. Only Tan's gaze held a hint of something softer, a flicker of concern that made her stomach clench. They'd all been worried; that much was clear. But she hadn't meant to cause a scene; she'd just wanted to feel alive.
Hicks had finished talking and had to step outside and take a call.
The door clicked shut behind Hicks, the sound echoing through the tension-filled silence. For a moment, no one moved, no one spoke. Then, as if a dam had broken, Hondo was on his feet, striding towards her. His hand cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing away a lingering tear. "What the hell were you thinking?" he demanded, his voice low and fierce.
Jenny took a deep breath, her heart hammering. "I just... I needed time to think," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know it was selfish, but I couldn't take it anymore."
Deacon leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving hers. "Take what?" he asked, his voice as cold as the steel in his gaze.
Jenny took a deep breath, the weight of the unspoken words between them a physical pressure on her chest. "Take a night to myself," she said, her voice shaky. "To not be the one you guys have to protect all the time. To not be the weak link."
Deacon's handsome face tightened, his eyes flashing. "You're not a weak link," he said, his voice firm. "You're the glue that holds us together."
The others gathered around, their expressions a mix of anger and concern. "You don't have to deal with this alone," Street said, his voice gentle but firm.
Chris nodded, his eyes searching hers. "Why didn't you tell us?" she asked, his voice tinged with hurt. "We're here for you, you know that."
Jenny looked around the room, the love in their eyes unmistakable. "I didn't want to burden you," she said, her voice barely audible. "You guys have so much to deal with already."
"Is that so?" Hondo said, his voice low and measured. He pulled her into a hug, his arms a steel band around her waist. "You're not a burden, Jenny," he murmured into her hair. "You're our family."
Deacon's hand squeezed her shoulder, his gaze never leaving hers. "You're the heart of this team," he said, his voice a little softer. "We need you."
Tan remained silent, his eyes searching hers. Jenny stepped towards him, reaching out to grab his arm. "Tan," she whispered, her voice trembling. She needed his understanding more than anything. He was the one who had always been there for her, the one who knew her better than she knew herself.
Without warning, he grabbed her chin, tilting her face up to meet his gaze. His eyes searched hers, the depth of his concern etched into every line and curve. Then, his mouth was on hers, a kiss that was as fierce as it was gentle. Jenny moaned, caught off guard, her body responding despite the turmoil of emotions. It was a declaration, a promise that no matter what, she was loved.
Her hand came up to rest against his chest, feeling the steady thump of his heart beneath her palm. His thumb traced the line of her jaw, the sensation sending a shiver down her spine. He broke the kiss, his forehead resting against hers, their breath mingling in the space between. "We're sorry," he whispered. "We'll do better."
Jenny nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I just needed to feel like I was in control of my life," she said, her voice trembling.
"You are," Hondo said, his hand tightening around her shoulder. "You always are, baby. We just need to communicate better." His breath was warm against her neck, his words a soothing balm to the turmoil inside her.
Her eyes searched the room, finding each of her lovers' gazes. They all had their own ways of showing affection, their own ways of saying sorry. Street offered a tentative smile, his eyes filled with regret. Chris reached out, his hand finding hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. And Deacon, ever the stoic one, nodded in silent understanding.
Hondo's arms tightened around her from behind, his head resting on her shoulder. His voice was stern, a firmness that made her knees buckle. "But never that again, understand?"
Jenny nodded, feeling the warmth of his breath against her neck. "Yes, sir," she said, her voice filled with a hint of defiance that she couldn't quite suppress. The room went quiet for a moment, and then, like a dam breaking, everyone started to chuckle.
"What?" she asked, her voice small and confused.
Deacon's expression was serious, the belt in his hand speaking volumes. "You're important to us, Jen," he began, his voice a gentle rumble. "But that doesn't mean we don't need to keep you in line."
Her eyes went wide, a mix of fear and anticipation. "What are you doing?" she whispered, her breath hitching in her chest.
"What does it look like?" Hondo's voice was low, the command in his tone unmistakable. He bent her over the conference room table, his hand firmly on the small of her back, keeping her in place. She could feel the heat of his body, the unyielding presence that sent a thrill of excitement down her spine.
"Guys, what if somebody sees us?" She whispered, her heart racing as she glanced over her shoulder at the closed door. The sound of their footsteps had long since faded into the background, leaving them in a cocoon of secrecy.
Street's grin was wicked, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Then let them see," he said, his hand coming down with a firm smack on her upturned bottom. The sound echoed through the empty office, making her jump. She felt a blush spread from her cheeks to her neck, her ass stinging with a heat that seemed to radiate through her entire
Swat Masterlist
Summary: No one at Swat knows that Luca is dating the Commander's daughter. That is, until she turns up to base and suddenly collapses.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A smile worked its way onto Luca's face when he started to wake up, but he kept his eyes shut, wanting to bask in the moment a little longer. He could practically feel the morning sun beating down against his eyelids as it broke through the thin curtains.
His arm lifted a little so he could drag his rough, worn fingertips up and down the back of (Y/n)'s shoulder. His touch light enough to feel like feathers tickling across her skin.
He felt (Y/n)'s lips press into his chest, silently letting him know that she was awake too. It felt strange to wake up before his alarm and without being rudely awoken by an alert from Swat asking the team to come in early. It was rare these days to get a full nights sleep and have a lay in like this.
His left arm felt heavy when he tried to move it and slump his arm over his eyes, further blocking out the light in an attempt to stay relaxed in bed for a little while longer.
But his lips curved into a grin and a flutter of adrenaline sparked through his stomach and livened him up when he felt (Y/n) move.
Wet, hollow kisses pressed up his sternum in a slow trail that had him holding back shivers and doing his best to stay motionless. The feeling of (Y/n)'s lips pressing to his neck made him take in a deep breath but when she grazed her teeth along his skin, his lips curved higher and his hand curled around her shoulder, giving a tight squeeze.
"Morning."
"Morning," Luca slid his arm from covering his eyes so it was slumped behind his head on the pillow. Allowing him to open his eyes, adjust to the light and stare down at the girl laid on top of him.
(Y/n) had her chest pressing against his side and both arms were now folded neatly over Luca's chest with her chin perched on her arms so she could stare up at him with that sweet smile that could get away with murder in Luca's eyes.
Her eyes danced around the room for a moment before settling back on Luca. They didn't always stay at his place, it was usually (Y/n)'s apartment they frequented because Street was staying with Luca. And when no one on the team knew that Luca was dating the Commander's daughter, it was easier to stay at (Y/n)'s place. She didn't have a roommate or a member of the team hanging around to see them.
She moved her arms a little so she could tilt her chin down and attach her lips to Luca's chest, trying not to grin against him when she felt his hand tighten on her shoulder.
Her eyes shot up to look at him and a gasp burst past her lips when his arm slid down from her shoulder to bind tightly around her waist. His palm pressed flat on her lower back and he pushed up so he could flip them over. He rolled her onto her back, muffling her quiet laugh as he moved to hover between her thighs. Luca's hands planted down on the pillow either side of her head, caging her in beneath him while his teeth flashed in a cheesy grin verging on a smirk.
She brought her hands up to cup his face, smoothing her thumbs down over the creases beneath his eyes as he leaned down to press a kiss to her lips.
His hands shifted to hold her sides when he balanced his weight between his knees and his arms that pinned down into the mattress to stop his weight from crushing (Y/n) beneath him. He tilted his head to the left, kissing her cheek first before he made a slow descent down her neck.
His fingers scrunched up in her shirt, about to try his luck with taking it off until he looked down.
"Isn't that mine?" He muttered with a sideways grin. He recognised that pale grey shirt and the fact that he could scrunch it up in one fist and the shirt still looked two sizes two big on his girlfriend gave away the fact it wasn't hers.
He looked back up and the grin she flashed him made his heart jump, especially when her smile was obscured by her teeth puncturing into her lower lip.
"Maybe."
While he took a moment to admire the view in front of him, (Y/n) took her chance to scrape her nails agonisingly slow over his skin, starting from his abdomen and she worked her way up until her hands were curved around his neck. Her fingers tickled the small hairs at the back of his neck and she sat up to meet him in the middle, moulding her chest against his before she pulled his lips down to hers.
(Y/n) could feel the fever behind his kiss and the way his fingertips dug bruisingly into her hips when she pushed her chest up against him just to irritate him and goad him further.
Her lips curved into a smile against his kiss and when she pulled back, (Y/n) sucked Luca's lower lip between her teeth and gave a small tug until she could feel the growl deep within his chest, rumbling through into her own.
"Baby," Luca's groan was deep and the word was a warning. He didn't have a lot of time before he was going to have to get ready for Swat, and she was teasing.
Her fingertips slid away from the back of his neck so she could drape her arms around his neck and tickle her fingers across his shoulders instead. Her plump lips left Luca's and moved towards his jaw and when she could feel his lips forming into a grin, she started to kiss down his neck.
He could feel her teeth grazing against the junction between his neck and shoulder, about to bite down and leave a mark. With a deep breath, Luca pushed forward causing (Y/n) to fall back into the pillows with him on top of her. And the shock did the trick in preventing her from leaving a dark bruise on his skin.
"Don't be marking me up, Street's already been begging to meet my girl and your dad will kill me if Street lets slip."
Luca had done a good job at deflecting any of the team's questions so far when they asked who he was so happy to be texting or where he was heading off to after work. And Street knew he had a girlfriend, it wasn't hard to figure out when Luca spent half his time somewhere else and came back with bright smiles and smelling of perfume.
The first person who had to be told was (Y/n)'s dad, the person they had been trying to hide their relationship from in the first place.
In the beginning it was easier not to tell anyone. (Y/n) knew her dad would interrogate Luca and give him warnings if he knew, therefore none of the team could know in case they told Hicks. But the longer they stayed together, the less willing they were to tell Hicks in case he took the news badly. He didn't want anyone at Swat looking at his daughter, let alone trying to date her.
"Hmm, okay." She murmured softly before snagging his lips in another kiss which stole all of his senses.
Luca let himself lean against her a bit more, but he tried to keep some of his weight pushed back on his legs and his elbows so he didn't crush (Y/n) beneath him. But he could still feel every crevace of her moulded up against him.
And as always, he leaned slightly to the left so he wouldn't touch the small oval plaster patch on the right side of her abdomen.
Her Dexcom.
A small sensor just beneath the skin that took continuous readings of (Y/n)'s glucose levels so she didn't have to prick her finger and check her levels through her blood anymore. Being diabetic had a lot of ups and downs, but her Dexcom was a lot easier than finger pricks for blood readings every day.
It didn't hurt but Luca never wanted to lean too close or press on it just in case he did one day hurt her or damage it.
He was a big guy, it wouldn't take much for Luca to crush (Y/n) beneath his body weight and he would hate to lean on her Dexcom and move it by accident. It had sensors beneath the skin, Luca could only imagine moving that without proper care or attention would cause (Y/n) some pain and grief.
Wet, panting kisses were peppered along her neck and down the middle of her throat so every time she gasped or swallowed, Luca could feel each movement. He let go of her hips and moved his fingertips across her sides and over the dips and curves of her body, trying to wind her up because he knew how ticklish she could be.
He paused his administrations when one of their phones on the bedside table pinged.
"Damn." Luca leaned down and buried his face in the crook of (Y/n)'s neck, feeling her shudder against him when he sank his teeth down into the soft flesh and tugged.
He felt (Y/n) hiss into his hair when his teeth released from her neck and it made him grin. His thumb traced across her jaw and he pressed a sloppy kiss to her cheek before he reached across and grabbed his phone. His eyes squinted at the brightness and he flicked through the notifications before he realised it hadn't been his phone that had gone off.
Switching out for (Y/n)'s phone, he looked at the newest notification before setting her phone back down again. His left hand stayed on her hip, his thumb tracing over her hipbone while his right hand rummaged around in his top drawer for something.
Once his fingers found the bag of sweets tucked beneath loose change and multiple chargers, Luca tossed them down on the pillow next to (Y/n).
He relished the way (Y/n)'s eyes widened and followed his movements to see what he had gotten from the drawer.
"Your sugar's dropping. Eat a few of those, babe." With a lasting kiss to her lips, Luca grinned against her mouth and gave her a squeeze before he slowly shifted to kneel between her thighs. He sank back on his heels and stretched his arms above his head while (Y/n) popped two jelly babies into her mouth.
Her Dexcom was connected to her phone, it sent alerts and notifications to tell her if her levels were okay, too low or too high. It gave recommendations on what was the best things to eat or drink and suggested eating dinner or getting a snack. It was great because (Y/n) didn't always know her levels were dropping until she started to feel the effects. The app let her know with some advanced warning.
It was also good for letting her know during the night. Sometimes (Y/n) didn't always wake up if she was having a hypo during the night. But with the notifications, it woke her and with Luca being a light sleeper, if he heard the notification he would wake up and help.
They had been together for long enough now that Luca had a stash of sweets in his car, glucose sachets in his backpack he took around with him. And he had put some in his bedside drawer on the off chance they stayed here rather than at (Y/n)'s place. Jelly babies happened to be his weakness and he knew they were good to boost (Y/n)'s levels if she ever needed them.
"Are these a midnight snack?" There was a little bit of hope in (Y/n)'s voice. Hope that these weren't just in Luca's drawer because he could get peckish during the night, but because he wanted them here in case she stayed over.
The soft look that flooded his eyes made (Y/n)'s stomach flip as she reached into the packet for another sweet.
Her eyes followed Luca as he dropped his arms from stretching above his head and cupped her chin so he could lean forward and kiss the powdered sugar from her lips.
"Street's been staying out recently, and I knew if you stayed the night, we might need some sugar close at hand."
"You planned ahead." (Y/n) wasn't sure if it was a question or a statement, but the tenderness in her voice pulled at Luca's heartstrings and had his smile broadening. He kissed her again, softer this time and nudged his nose against hers.
"I wanted to be prepared, there's a pack in the car too."
At the risk of sounding corny, (Y/n) mumbled a quiet but loving "You're sweet," as her hands moved to cup his face, bringing him in for a lasting kiss before he climbed off the bed. He needed to get ready for work.
Luca pulled a shirt over his head and turned to look back at (Y/n) when he heard her moving to get up off the bed. The smile on his face began to fade when he watched (Y/n) wobble on unsteady feet, and when her eyes started to roll, Luca pushed forward.
He looped his arms around her waist, letting her slump forward into his chest just as her knees began to cave.
"Wow, hey you okay?" He pecked her temple and moved one hand to tilt her head back so she was looking up at him. His eyes narrowed, watching the way her eyes took a few seconds to come back into focus and her hands felt like they were shaking when she reached out for his arms.
She managed a small smile and nodded her head when the dizziness began to fade and the spots in front of her eyes faded back to full vision again.
"I'm good, j-just the sugar, probably."
Luca hummed in that quiet way that told her he wasn't inclined to believe her, but he wouldn't press the matter. He turned her and helped her sit back down on the side of the bed as his eyes looked her up and down just to reassure himself that she was alright.
Her levels had dipped, she probably just needed to wait for them to even back out again.
***
A grin spread across (Y/n)'s lips when she walked past the gym and clocked her eyes onto a familiar set of blond hair spiked up at the front. She could feel her visitor's badge tapping away on the waistband of her jeans and she began to tap her finger against the badge, stopping it from making such a noise.
Her eyes stayed focused on Luca who was staring down at the tablet in his hands, clearly going through some notes or files for a new case.
It took a few seconds for him to finally lift his eyes and look ahead of him. He knew this place like the back of his hand, he was used to roaming around without needing to look where he was going.
When he lifted his eyes, they seemed to light up the moment they latched onto (Y/n). He scoured around the gym, making sure no one was nearby as he and (Y/n) went to cross paths. He was aiming for the computer room, although Luca wasn't sure where (Y/n) was going or why she was here.
When they came close, Luca moved the tablet into his right hand so he could reach his other hand out. He wormed his arm in front of (Y/n) and gave her hip a tight squeeze as they passed, and he took the opportunity to press a kiss to her temple since no one was around.
He didn't like having to let go of her, but they couldn't afford for anyone to see their interaction and catch onto what was happening between them.
(Y/n) smiled to herself and tilted her head down when Luca passed her. She kept her pace and aimed for the stairs at the back of the base. She was here to see her dad, they were heading out for lunch together.
Shifting her hand up, (Y/n) rubbed at her temple to try and rid herself of the headache beginning to form behind her eyes. She hadn't felt amazing since her low sugar level this morning, but her levels had evened out since then.
Her head was pounding and she wasn't sure if she was going to have much of an apetite once she and her dad went out, but (Y/n) knew she would have to eat something. Skipping meals wasn't an option for her, it screwed with her diabetes. Regular meals, controlled carbohydrates and sugar intake all helped to keep her stable.
She continued to rub at her temple but a gasp tumbled past her lips and she came to an abrupt stop when she turned towards the stairs and almost barelled into someone.
"(Y/n), hey. What're you doing here?"
A forced smile wormed onto her lips and she looped her arms around Deacon, pulling him in for a hug. It had been a while since she had seen almost anyone from Swat, excluding Luca of course. She always managed to have some banter with Deacon and have a good joke around.
"Meeting dad, for lunch. How are you?" It took a moment to get the words out properly and in the correct order, and she was sure Deacon sensed that she wasn't feeling her best right now.
Her nose crinkled when she felt her blood pulsing through her head like a boombox and she could of groaned when she felt how warm it was in here. She felt like she was burning up, God they had the heating on a lot round here.
"I'm good, we miss you round here, you know." He patted his hand on (Y/n)'s arm, but his smile started to fade.
Deacon moved his hands to his hips and tilted his head to one side when (Y/n) leaned back into the wall just beside the stairs. She didn't look too good. (Y/n) ran her hand around the back of her neck while she pressed her lips together. Her mouth felt dry. How long had it been since she'd had a drink? Was that why she had a headache, because she needed a drink?
"I- I uh, I need to find dad." She did her best to smile, but she knew it didn't fool him.
Her hand trailed along the wall as she turned towards the stairs and tried to get herself to move. Whatever Deacon said went in one ear and out the other as (Y/n) forced her numb legs to lift and move up the stairs. But three steps up had her feeling like someone had pressed a pause button on her.
"Oh, God." Deacon surged forward and reached out for (Y/n) when her body landed on the stairs with a thud that echoed in his ears and made him cringe.
His hands grasped her waist and he carefully reeled her up off the stairs, taking a few steps back to ease her down to the floor. He couldn't have her laid passed out on the stairs like that, she could hurt herself.
"(Y/n)? (Y/n), are you with me?"
His hands moved to lay her on her back as he crouched down beside her and gently cupped her neck. He tilted her head to the side and felt her pulse whilst also making sure she was still breathing properly.
"Deak?"
Deacon tilted ihs head back at the sound of Hondo's voice, seeing the Sargent stood at the top of the stairs. "Go get Hicks."
"Deak, hey Deak what happened?"
Panic struck a chord in Luca's chest and sent twinges rolling throughout his nervous system like he was about to have a heart attack. He dumped the tablet down on the bench at his side before he jogged over towards the stairs. What was he doing? Why was (Y/n) passed out on the floor?
"This is (Y/n), Hick's daughter. She didn't look too good and she passed out, Hondo's gone to get him."
Luca resisted the urge to say he knew who she was. Of course he knew, he'd been seeing her for the last few months, but none of the team needed to know that yet. He crouched down beside (Y/n), watching intently as Deacon tried to lift her eyelid and see if she was conscious, but her eyes had rolled tot he back of her head.
Before he could think better of it, he moved round for the bag that had slid off (Y/n)'s arm in the struggle. He unzipped her bag and fumbled around until he found her phone. He had to know if her levels had dropped and if this was anything to do with her diabetes or not.
"Uh, Luca, what are you doing?" Deacon kept his hands on (Y/n)'s neck, still trying to rouse her. But he rose a brow when he watched his friend find (Y/n)'s phone. Deacon doubted calling anyone or checking her phone was going to make much of a difference right now.
"Checking her sugar levels… Dexcom?"
When Deacon just gave him an uncertain look, Luca reached down for (Y/n)'s shirt and pulled it up to expose her abdomen. He pointed to the square Dexcom stuck to the left side of her abdomen which caused Deacon to raise a brow. He didn't know (Y/n) was diabetic, but then again, it wasn't something she would broadcast to everyone at Swat.
Which begged the question, how did Luca know about it?
"She's a diabetic, and her levels are really low." Luca opened the app and set the phone down near (Y/n)'s shoulder so Deacon could see just how low her glucose levels had dropped to.
"Alright, what happened?" Hicks voice boomed through the air and his boots clammered against the stairs as he rushed down to the commotion.
He nodded when Deacon pushed up and stepped back so that Hicks could take his place beside (Y/n). He brushed his thumb across the side of her jaw and tried to bring her back around but it was clear she wasn't about to wake up anytime soon.
"(Y/n), honey can you hear me?" He clicked his tongue when he didn't gain a response, but when he realised (Y/n)'s Dexcom app was open on her phone, his eyes snapped over to Luca. "How'd you know about that?"
"I saw the Dexcom last time she was here, figured she had to have the app too."
He shrugged his shoulders and leaned back on his heels while he started to run his hands up and down his thighs. He didn't like this. (Y/n) hadn't been feeling great this morning and now she had passed out, and Luca knew it wasn't because she had skipped a meal because he saw her have breakfast. The jelly babies this morning should have boosted her levels and eating should have kept them up to a normal state.
And he really didn't like the fact that this happened here, at work, where Luca couldn't try and hold her or move her or bring her round himself. He couldn't do anything without seeming inappropriate or letting slip how much she meant to him.
When his hands continued to glide up and down his trousers, a sudden thought hit him and he looked down.
Glucose powder sachets. Luca had them in the car and in his backpack, and these were an old pair of trousers. He slid his hand into his pocket, feeling his heart go haywire with five extra beats when he felt the familiar silver foil packet between his fingers. He had a sachet on him. That would help to boost her system.
He slowly reached out for her bag and set it on his lap, pretending to rummage through and slid the sachet between his fingers.
"Will this help?" He sheepishly handed the sachet over to Hicks who had a visible wave of relief wash over him.
"Yeah, give it here. Someone call an ambulance, I want her taken to hospital with levels this low. Here we go, sweetheart."
Hicks ripped the sachet and carefully pulled (Y/n)'s jaw down so he could rub the powder on the inside of her cheek. It was a quick way to get glucose into her system by adding powder onto her cheeks so her saliva would break it down. They had to get her levels to rise quickly and it had been a long time since Hicks had needed to help (Y/n) through a hypo like this.
He wanted her to get checked out by a doctor, it wasn't normal for (Y/n) to go into hypos and he had to know if there was a reason for this. And if she didn't pick up soon, she would need to be hospitalised to get her levels back up to where they should be.
***
"Dad, I'm fine-"
"You are not fine now sit back down." The stern tone in her dad's voice made (Y/n) bow her head and although she huffed and crossed her arms over her chest, she gave in.
She sat back down on the bed and when her dad pointed at her legs and clicked his fingers, she grumbled but swung them back onto the bed. She crossed her legs beneath her and moved her hands to fiddle with the few rings on her fingers, twisting them round out of nervous habit.
Her eyes glanced up at her dad, watching the way he began to roll his cuffs up towards his elbows before his hands clamped down on his hips. He wasn't about to let (Y/n) try and discharge herself. They were waiting for the doctor and they weren't leaving until (Y/n) had been checked out and cleared.
"Do you know how long its been since I had to administer glucose to you, since I had to call an ambulance for you?" His tone softened a little with each word, but Hicks still didn't sound his usual self. His voice was gruff and his expression was dark.
He'd had enough scares in the past with (Y/n)'s health, and after losing her mother, Hicks couldn't bear the thought of anything else happening to anyone in his family. He wanted confirmation that she was alright or they weren't going anywhere.
"I'm sorry." Reaching out, (Y/n) took one of his hands in hers and gave a little shake to try and make him smile.
"I don't want you to be sorry, you haven't done anything wrong, I just- I just want to know that you're okay."
(Y/n) smiled and squeezed his hand before a knock at the door broke them out of their little moment together. She could feel a wave of relief washing over her when the nurse came in. They had been waiting for discharge papers.
She had come around in the ambulance on the way here and she'd had bloods taken, an IV on and insulin on tap when she needed it. She felt better and her levels had risen back to normal and were being monitored. (Y/n) didn't want to waste anymore of anyone's time, she just wanted to go back home. She felt much better even though she did feel horrid about the fact that Hondo's team were all in the waiting room to make sure she was okay.
They had better, more important things to do than hang around here after the small scare (Y/n) had given them.
"Can I go now?" (Y/n) winced and looked down when her dad squeezed her hand and gave her a certain look.
"Is she okay?"
The smile on the nurse's face was comforting and she began tapping her fingers against the papers in her hand which (Y/n) prayed were discharge papers. She shouldn't have been admitted in the first place, she should have stayed in the emergency room and then gone home once her levels evened out.
"We did a few tests when you arrived, and the results have come back… am I okay to tell you, or would you prefer to talk in private?"
A frown pulled on (Y/n)'s face and she suddenly found herself gripping her dad's hand tighter. Was that a bad thing? Was she about to be given bad news that she might want to hear alone? What kind of tests had they done that would give strange results like this?
"I'm her dad, you can talk in front of me, right?" Hicks looked from the nurse back to (Y/n) who quickly nodded. If this was bad news then she didn't want to hear it alone.
"Okay, well you had some blood screened when you came in, and after looking at the hormone levels we did a few more tests. You're pregnant, congratulations."
(Y/n) felt her stomach twisting itself into knots and she shivered when her dad tightened his hand around hers until she could barely feel her fingers anymore.
That was technically good news, that wasn't anything bad or horrible or life-threatening. (Y/n) wasn't sure what she had been expecting, but she thought it would be something bad with the way the nurse spoke at first. That was good news. She was going to have a baby. Hicks was going to be a grandad. (Y/n) and Luca were about to have a baby together.
Oh.
Now she was going to have to tell her dad about her and Luca. Her dad had found out about the baby before Luca, that wasn't exactly the right way to go about things.
"I'll let you have a moment for it to sink in, then we can get you discharged and signed on for antenatal appointments."
The amount of information, thoughts and panicked reasonings running through (Y/n)'s mind made her dizzy. And when the nurse left the room, (Y/n) finally let go of her dad's hand so she could look up at him and gage his expression. He looked gaunt and pale and in shock.
He clamped one hand down on his hip while his other hand rubbed at the back of his neck and loosened his collar that now felt like it was constricting his breathing. His daughter was going to have a baby. She was clearly seeing someone or knew someone and he didn't have any idea.
"I didn't know you were getting serious with anyone." His voice was quiet and the way he rose a brow was like he was asking (Y/n) to tell him this was a misunderstanding.
He thought things would go differently. He thought (Y/n) would find someone, introduce them and they would all get along and do things as a family before she settled down. He thought he would walk her down the aisle before he saw her start a family of his own, but then again, Hicks knew he was traditional. She didn't have to get married, but he would of liked some warning first before this kind of news.
"Do I know him?"
(Y/n) rolled her lips together and bit down on her lower lip. She tried to look up at her dad but the panic was written across her face and it made him take a sharp breath when he looked down at her.
"Oh… oh, sweetheart, please don't tell me it's someone on my team?" The gritty tone to his voice made (Y/n) shake and she nodded her head.
She cringed when her dad sighed and tipped his head back. His hands moved to smother his face and he groaned, muttering something incoherent into his palms. Someone under his command had gotten with his daughter and got her pregnant. He didn't want (Y/n) involved with anyone in Swat.
She had enough trouble worrying about him and the work he did without having to worry about another loved one getting hurt on the job. Hicks loved the job, but he had seen how it worried his own wife a lot of the time.
"It's Luca." (Y/n) swung her legs round to get up but she saw the fire burning in her dad's eyes when he listened to her.
"Luca?!"
Out of all the people on his team, Hicks wouldn't have pegged Luca as the kind to do something like this. Luca was devoted to the job and he had a lot of respect. He thought Luca would have been someone who would have come outright to him and explained that he was seeing his daughter, rather than going behind Hicks's back like this.
He thought Luca might have had some decency to stay away from (Y/n). Hicks told everyone not to even look at his daughter, let alone think about dating her.
"I was gonna tell you, I swear…"
(Y/n) cringed and turned to try and fiddle with the IV line strapped to her left hand when her dad silently walked out of the room. She knew the team were waiting outside. She knew they were still here and she didn't want her dad to argue with Luca or start a fight.
A rather dirty look crossed Hicks's face and he swiped his hand along his chin and the back of his neck as he locked his sights on Luca. He made a beeline for the younger man who was sat forward in his chair, hands clasped between his thighs and both feet tapping madly against the floor.
"A word?"
A shiver tore down Luca's spine but he nodded all the same. He pushed up to his feet, running his hands up and down his thighs as he followed the commander away from the rest of the team who were looking at him with confusion and unease lighting up their eyes.
He knew. Luca could feel it. His stomach was tingling with adrenaline and he just instinctively knew that the game was up. Hicks knew he had been seeing his daughter. (Y/n) must have said something and Luca couldn't blame her, but this wasn't how either of them wanted him to find out.
He began pulling his sleeves down and fiddled with them, hooking the sleeves over his hands in an anxious habit. But he held his shoulders straight and stood tall to try and keep himself professional and respectful.
"I would of thought a third generation would of had the decency to tell me he's dating my daughter. Especially when I thought I'd made it clear I didn't want anyone involved with her."
That stung. Luca visibly winced and coiled his arms towards his chest. He was third generation and he was extremely proud of that, but he couldn't help who he fell in love with. All he could help was how Hicks had found out and how they should have told him sooner.
"I'm sorry for not telling you, I really am, we didn't want to cause problems. But I'm not sorry for being with (Y/n)… sir, I really love your daughter."
Luca couldn't help but steal a glance behind him.
He found Street grinning because now he finally knew who his friend had been seeing behind closed doors, and he also knew that this was a big mess up. Street would no longer be the one who people could pick on or make fun of for what he did because Luca would be scrutinised- all in joking manner- for this one.
And he could see Deacon and Chris rolling their lips together, trying their best not to smile or laugh. But the way their heads were inclined together said it all; they were already gossiping about this.
"Hm, you do?" Hicks placed his hands on his hips and bent one knee forward and for a moment, he looked like he was thawing out a little. "Well that's good to hear, Luca. Because not only have I just found out you're dating my daughter, but now you've got her pregnant, too."
A grin formed on Luca's lips which parted, clearly about to laugh until he realised his commander wasn't smiling.
This wasn't a joke.
Hicks wasn't messing with him or trying to wind him up or get a reaction out of him as payback for not telling him sooner. This was real.
Luca couldn't control the smile breaking out on his face again, he tried to pinch himself and bind his arms around his chest, but it did nothing to hide his growing pleasure. He couldn't help but smile because this is what he'd always wanted. Luca loved (Y/n), he loved every bone in her body and he'd always wanted a family of his own and kids someday. Now he was going to have a baby, with (Y/n).
"She- really- oh my God."
"Yeah, really-" Hicks shook his head with a sigh when Luca was already rushing past him and making a beeline for (Y/n)'s room. If that didn't prove to him that Luca loved her, he didn't know what would.
(Y/n) reached her hands out for the bed, about to sit back down quickly until she realised it wasn't her dad coming back into the room. She let her shoulders drop and let go of the IV line she had taken out the back of her hand.
Her eyes followed Luca as he shut the door behind him and hurried over to her. His hands were messing with his sleeves and batting about at his sides and he had his usual black baseball cap sat backwards on his head.
But it was the smile toying about on his lips which made (Y/n)'s stomach ignite with adrenaline and made her breaths catch in her throat.
"Is it true? He's not trying to mess with me or something?"
(Y/n) took a step closer to him as she nodded, unable to look anywhere but at the radiant grin on his face. "I'm pregnant."
She loved the way he practically threw his arms up in the air and jumped on the spot like a child who'd just opened the best Christmas present. Before (Y/n) could say another word, Luca's arms were bound around her waist and he lifted her off her feet.
She gasped, looping her arms around the back of his neck, burrowing her face into the crook of his neck as she giggled against his skin. She could feel his hands squeezing her sides, trying not to hurt her but he couldn't stop the excitement that was radiating through him.
"Oh, this is great, babe." His lips pressed to her cheek and when (Y/n) leaned back, he stole a searing kiss from her lips before he gently set her back down to her feet. Their temples pressed together and (Y/n) ran her hand up and down the back of Luca's neck, feeling tears welling up in her eyes.
"We're having a baby."

“I don’t think Y/n’s hearing aids are working that well.” Deacon said being worried.
“What makes you think they are not working?” Hondo asked.
“Cuz sometimes after we ask them for something, they act like it was the first time I ask them that.”
They were both heading to you to see if you got any new info on the case. As they made their way they could hear the rest of the team arguing, Tan and Luca vs Street while you just stood there looking at them with dead eyes then turned to the Ipad in your hand.
“I honestly think that would be a waste of time and they could get away before we close in on them.” Street defended.
“Hey hey hey what’s going on in here?” Hondo asked.
“Just deciding on our new approach.” Tan replied.
“So what we got so far?” Deacon asked.
They all turned to look at you, your eyes were still locked on the Ipad in your hand, having no idea what’s going on around you. They waited for a whole minute just in case you were pulling on the files.
“Y/n?” Hondo called you.
He called you again but still no respond. Deacon shared a look with Hondo. Street touched your arm and that’s when you turned your head to look at him and noticed the whole team was already looking at you.
You smiled then put your hand behind your ear and turn on your hearing aid “What?”
They all looked shocked at you.
“Did you turn off your hearing aid?” Tan asked.
You nodded. Jim chuckled because he knows this, you did this all the time at home.
“Why?” it was Luca’s turn.
“Oh” you let out a small laugh “Whenever I know there’s going to be some dumb argument, I just turn it off so the stupidness doesn’t affect me.”
“Yeah, that explains so much.” Deacon commented.
A/n: This was requested by an anonymous. I've actually had this idea in mind for weeks I just didn't know for who to write it. Thank you!

Unexpected

Warnings: mentions of nausea, vomiting, and pregnancy.
“Hey babe, I’ve got to go.”, Luca’s voice, your fiancé who belonged to SWAT’s voice rang out. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay?”
He came in the bedroom, looking at you in bed. You knew you looked terrible—pale as a ghost, sweaty, and wiping the tears from your eyes.
“Yes, I’ll be fine. Go to work. And don’t worry about me.”, you sniffled.
Luca’s face wore concern as he touched the door way. “I’ll always worry about you.”
“Not during a mission. Nope. You know the rules.”
“That was when we first started dating and I wasn’t sure things were going to get serious.”
You rolled your eyes easily, sitting up in bed but instantly feeling so sick that you had to immediately lay back down.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”, you groaned.
Luca came over to the bed, siting on the edge. He sat on his empty side of the bed. You weren’t going to lie—it wasn’t so bad when he left for work some days and you could have the entire bed to yourself and sleep in. But today wasn’t shaping up to be a great day. You had already called your boss, letting them know you wouldn’t be in today. This had been going on for a few mornings but you were sure there was something going around.
He brushed through your hair easily. “I just hate leaving you when you’re feeling bad.”
“I know. But I’m a big girl, I can handle myself.”
Luca rolled his eyes, scoffing playfully. “Fine. Mrs. Independent. But if you need anyone—Annie’s number’s on the fridge.”
“Also have it in my phone.”, you smirked at him, shaking it lightly.
Luca smirked back. “I love you. I’ll see you tonight. Unless it’s an all night job.”
“Okay, honey. Be careful. I love you too.”
He kissed your head, brushing through your hair again. “Get some rest.”
“I’ll try.”
__________________________________________________________________________
Back at SWAT headquarters, Luca was in the locker room. The assignment was already given by Hondo. Most of the team had already finished getting ready minus Deacon.
“Hey Luca. How’s Y/N?”
Luca looked up at him. “Not so great. She had a really rough morning. Woke up—said she felt dizzy, nausea, vomiting. This is like the third day in a row. She couldn’t hardly keep water down, man.”
Deacon’s eyes widened before he stifled a small laugh. “Dude.”
“What?”
“Ever think she could be having morning sickness?”
“Morning sickness?”, Luca repeated.
“Yeah—as in she’s pregnant.”
Luca scoffed playfully before resolving in laughter. “No way man.”
Deacon shrugged his shoulders lightly before smirking at Luca whilst leaning against his locker. “Just saying—Annie and I have been through this four times already.”
Luca rolled his eyes. “Well, we aren’t trying.”
“Don’t have to be.”
“She wants to get married first. I respect that, Deac.”
Deacon smirked easily before patting Luca on the shoulder. “Alright, Luca. Let’s get ready to head out.”
Luca nodded, his smile fading softly. What if Deacon was right? He swallowed hard, thinking about the possibility. He wanted nothing more than to have his own family. But he knew that there were steps you wanted to take first. There had been many women in and out of his life but none of them understood that SWAT came first. You did—and it blew his mind. You understood when he was late coming home—sometimes never coming home until the next morning just as you were getting up and getting ready for work.
You’d never admit to Luca that on the nights he didn’t come home, you barely slept. You worried about him. But you knew this would be part of your life as long as you were with him—and you wanted that to be forever. Luca shook his head, trying to get the thought away. At least just during the mission.
Back at home, you finally trudged your way into the living room. You barely made it to the couch, that queasy feeling never quite leaving. You laid down, a sigh of relief finally escaping you as you turned on the television and began watching one of your favorite reality shows. 90 Day Fiancé. It was almost comical how in love these people seemed to be, giving themselves ninety days to get married in. It was something you could never do.
After being emerged in your show, you heard a knock on the door. You debated not answering it. Whatever it was, it could wait. But you all didn’t live in the best part of LA. But it was up and coming. Another couple of knocks came to the door and you sighed, lifting yourself off the couch painfully slow.
“Coming.”, you barely got out.
Standing up only made you feel worse, that queasy feeling intensifying. It was miserable. Quickly, you opened the door to reveal none other than Annie Kay.
“Annie.”, you smiled even through the sickness.
“Y/N. How are you feeling?”
She took you in a hug and you prayed she wouldn’t squeeze too tight. That might be the thing that sent you over the edge.
“Uh okay—just really nauseous.”
“Oh my gosh—come on, let’s get you to the couch. You look a little green around the gills.”
“I am.”, you sighed as she ushered you over to the couch. “Did Luca send you?”
“Well, not exactly. Deacon had said you weren’t feeling well and I thought I’d run by and check in on you.”
She sat you down before laying her purse in the chair across the couch. “Lay back.”
You didn’t argue with her suggestion considering you felt like you could throw up at any given second.
“How long has this been going on?”
“A couple of days.”
“Have you eaten anything and kept it down?”
“Not exactly.”
Annie’s lips curved in disapproval. “I’ll get a cool washcloth.”
You heard her move through the house, working her way to the bathroom and eventually finding the towel closet. You closed your eyes, praying that you wouldn’t throw up anymore. You were so sore from dry heaving. As you heard Annie approach, you opened your eyes softly.
“Have you thought about going to the hospital?”
“No. Why waste valuable resources on someone who doesn’t need them? I’m sure it’s a virus or a stomach bug or something.”
Annie looked at you disapprovingly as she laid the washcloth on your forehead. “Because it could be something else going on.”
“Annie, you don’t have to do this. Aren’t your kids at home? They need you more than I do.”
“We’re family. We SWAT girlfriends, fiancees, wives have to stick together.”, she smirked. “We’ll always be here for you. Besides my mom is there with the kids right now. It’s fine.”
You smiled softly. Ever since Luca introduced you to Annie, you all had became quick friends. It was a no brainer considering your partners worked together. But it was nice to have someone around who understood how you felt—your worries, your fears, how much you loved the man that made you feel all of these things. Annie understood that a hundred percent and validated your feelings, letting you know they were normal. She recounted memories from when Deacon was a police officer before transitioning to SWAT.
SWAT only intensified her worry but she knew it was his passion—it was something he loved. And Luca was no different—considering he grew up around his father and grandfather. There was no talking him out of trying out for SWAT.
“Thanks. It means a lot—oh crap. Annie, can you grab that small trash can? I think I’m going to be sick.”
Annie jumped off the couch, quickly grabbing the trash can and immediately handing it to you before she pulled your hair back. It was no time before you were back to your same morning routine—dry heaving. You began coughing lightly as Annie looked on sympathetically. She stroked your hair lightly as if she was trying to reassure you. Your eyes were full of tears and you could barely see as you rubbed them, hoping the torture was over.
Sighing, Annie sat the trash can down on the floor. “You didn’t have anything to really throw up.”
“I know.”, you sighed. “I’m sorry you had to see that.”
“Don’t worry, I have four kids. I’m used to a little vomit.”, she smirked playfully before her voice deadpanned, turning slightly more serious. “I really think you need to get checked out.”
“I’m fine.”
“Y/N.”
“Really, Annie—I am. I even feel better now. I’m gonna go try and shower.”
Annie watched from the sidelines as you threw your blanket back and swung your legs over the side of the couch, planting them firmly on the hardwood floor. You felt dizzy and light headed but decided to continue on your stubborn way and you were damn determined to get to the bathroom and take a quick shower regardless.
“Are you sure you feel okay?”
“I’m fine.”, you repeated, being insistent. “Really.”
She backed off easily, realizing quickly that she wasn’t going to win this argument. She knew you were determined, driven in your own way, and slightly stubborn. It made sense why you and Luca were so good for another. You all balanced each other out in some ways. It took so much effort to put one foot in front of the other and you prayed Annie wasn’t noticing your struggle. You could feel her eyes on you but tried to ignore it.
The bedroom began to grow blurry as you cleared the door frame, barely closing the door. You had to steady yourself for a moment before continuing. At least you were alone now and Annie couldn’t see you struggling. Breathing a slight sigh of relief, you continued to the bathroom. Things seemed to go from bad to worse, vision blurring further to the point you could barely make out the shapes of the shower, sink, and toilet. Your body began to sway, eyes closing and everything faded to black.
The mission was getting hot and heavy, the SWAT team coming upon the house with hostages inside. That’s when Cortez radioed Hondo.
“This is Captain Cortez to 20 David.”
“This is 20 David.”
“Is there any way Luca can be pulled out safely without compromising the team or mission?”
“Negative, Captain. Not right now. Is something wrong?”
Cortez sighed before responding. “Annie is on her way to the hospital with Y/N. She passed out at home. Just get him out as soon as you can.”
“I will.”, Hondo promised.
Hondo sighed as he ended the radio conversation, refocusing his attention to the matter at hand. Watching Luca spring into action while having no clue what was going on behind the scenes was gut wrenching. He could only imagine how Luca’s reaction would be when he told him but right now he didn’t have time to think about that. There are things that needed to happen before he could do that. As long as things went smoothly, this would end soon and he could tell Luca about what was going on with you.
The team worked like a well oiled machine, staying in the zone. It wasn’t the first time they had been in a similar situation. Everyone knew their role and the knew it well. Hondo gave gentle orders, they followed. It was that simple. The moment of truth came, the moment they had been waiting for. Chris had a clear shot and was able to subdue the target. So far, things were successful. Hondo hoped they stayed that way. He knew he needed to pull Luca as soon as he could.
Besides his parents, you were the only other person he was so close to. Hondo could tell how much he loved you—how much he cared about you. No other woman had made it this far with Luca so he knew you were special. There was something about you. He could remember when Luca had a little more pep in his step. Hondo knew in that moment there was another woman. After the team teased and prodded at him to gain some information, they didn’t think it would last.
Luca didn’t have a good track record with women or relationships. So when things went the opposite way and Luca brought you to meet the team, they knew things were different. He seemed serious about you. That was even before the proposal. It seemed like yesterday when Luca was acting weird—getting prompted by the team about what was going on. They all feared trouble in paradise. But they were so far off from what was really going on.
He sighed, finally telling them that he planned on proposing to you—that night. He asked them if they thought it was too soon or if you’d say yes. He got a few teasing answers but in all seriousness, everyone agreed that you’d be over the moon. That was one of the best days of your life. After watching the news all day and worrying about Luca, you were finally glad to see him that night. It was supposed to be dinner at a restaurant on the beach and then a walk on the beach.
He might have been late but he had a good excuse. He expected you to be angry but you understood why he was late. In that moment, you proved even further why he should marry you. You were the only woman who understood SWAT came first. It was a sacrifice you were willing to make if that meant being with Luca for the rest of your life.
You could hear all the sounds around you—people talking and moving around you. A familiar voice was one you picked up on—Annie. Slowly, you opened your eyes, everything coming into view. It was a white room, a sterile smell up in your nose. Were you at the hospital?
“Y/N?”, Annie touched your arm gently.
Turning to look at her, she finally came into view after you blinked a couple of times.
“What happened?”
“You passed out in the bathroom. I brought you here immediately. Your blood pressure was low, they did some blood work. The doctor should be in shortly.”
“I’ll get him.”, the nurse spoke up.
“Did you call for Luca?”
“I did. Jessica said she would get Luca out as soon as she could.”
You smirked. “SWAT comes first.”
Annie smirked back. “It’s part of this life, isn’t it?”
“It is. Thank you, Annie.”
“You’re welcome.”
Interrupting the heartfelt conversation, the sound of the curtain sliding back and the doctor entering the room got your all’s attention.
“Miss L/N?”
“Yes?”
“I’m Doctor Owens. I’m treating you today and I’d like to go over a few things with you since you’re awake now.”
You nodded.
He continued. “Is your husband on his way?”
“Fiancé and as soon as he can. He’s a police officer—well, he’s on SWAT.”
“One of LA’s finest.”
You smiled, instantly thinking about him and nodded lightly. Annie smiled at you sympathetically and you felt like she already had an idea of what was going on. You fiddled with the hem of your blanket lightly.
“Your blood pressure was low when you arrived. We did some blood work and determined that your iron levels were also low. Also, you had an abnormal result in your blood work.”, he smiled.
Why was he smiling?
“What’s going on?”, you asked easily.
Annie squeezed your arm reassuringly.
“You’re pregnant. Congratulations.”, the doctor smiled. “Your HCG levels are perfect. Your iron and blood pressure were low from early pregnancy. We just need your consent to give you some iron infusions before you leave. We might keep you overnight, just observe you.”
“Pregnant?”, you repeated, feeling like the wind had been taken out of your sails.
The doctor nodded. “Around four weeks. Still early but everything looks great. I’ll be happy to go over the results once your fiancé arrives.”
You nodded softly, swallowing hard. The doctor disappeared behind the curtain and you instantly began to feel overwhelmed.
“I can’t believe this.”, Annie smiled. “Luca is going to be over the moon—oh, he’ll be so thrilled.”, she smiled.
“Are you sure?”, you laughed nervously and she could tell you were worried.
“I’m sure—he’s always wanted his own family.”
You began to feel a little numb, like you were disassociating slightly. It felt like a dream—but you weren’t sure if it was going to have a happy ending. You could only hope Luca would take the news well. You’d find out soon enough.
