You've Earned It
It's been a while, but here is a new Jim Street imagine, requested by a lovely mutual. I hope you will all like this one.
I'm trying to get a few more Swat ideas in motion at the moment.

Swat Masterlist
Summary: (Y/n) is on maternity leave, but she pops into Swat to visit the team. But when a situation breaks out and they go on lock down, (Y/n)'s water breaks.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A strange smirk danced across (Y/n)'s face when she took the visitor's badge she was handed and clipped it onto her waist. It wasn't often that (Y/n) had to wear this kind of badge when she came into Swat headquarters like this. It almost made her feel like an outsider.
She didn't feel like part of Swat when she was demoted to being a visitor, but then again, (Y/n) could understand that it was for security. They had to log people in and out, no matter who they were, when they came to visit. Just in case there was a security risk or they had a fire and had to evacuate so they knew everyone was out safely.
Her bag tapped against her side and she tightened her hand around the leather handle so her bag stopped trying to slide down her shoulder.
Her shoes clicked against the tiled floor and her eyes scanned around as she slowly headed towards the gym that she hadn't used in quite a few months.
A tender look crossed her face and she briefly tilted her head down when her eyes caught on a familiar figure approaching her.
"Who let you back in the building?" Hondo's deep voice was followed by a laugh that made (Y/n)'s smile change back into a smirk and when she lifted her head, she saw he was aiming right for her. His arms stretched out to reel her in for a hug.
It had been a while since (Y/n) had seen Hondo, granted they had messaged a bit over the last few weeks, but that was different to seeing him in person. Especially when she used to see him every other day for almost twelve or fifteen hours at a time when they worked together.
But it had all changed since (Y/n) got pregnant.
She was one of the few women in Swat and that meant the contracts had to be updated to allow maternity leave to be introduced. (Y/n) had been on amended duties, restricted to living in the base and not allowed to attend any of the raids or calls they went out on. She was their eyes and ears, living in the computer room. Until she had to take early maternity leave.
"Haven't you missed me?" (Y/n) countered, folding her arms over her chest when they finally parted.
She watched Hondo lean on his back foot and place his hands on his hips as he grinned and looked around the gym.
"You know we have, it's not the same here without you. Deak, look who dropped by."
Deacon looked like he had been aiming to walk in a different direction, but the moment his eyes locked on (Y/n), a grin spread across his face and he switched to jog over to them instead. (Y/n) loved the way he looped an arm around her shoulders and reeled her into his side like he hadn't seen her in months rather than a matter of weeks.
"Hey! What're you doing here, how are you?"
"I'm good, got a bit lonely so thought I'd come and brighten the place up for a while."
Everyone had been more understanding than (Y/n) first thought when she and Jim told them that they were expecting their first baby. (Y/n) thought it would change things too much. She was worried that when they got someone to take her spot out in the field while she helped in the computer room, that it would become permanent. (Y/n) worked hard to get her place on the team and she didn't want to lose that because she wanted to have a family.
But the team had been so encouraging and warm and understanding, if anything it seemed to bring them closer together.
And when (Y/n) had to go to hospital last month, the team had been understanding then too. Hondo got Jim's shifts covered so he could be with (Y/n) for a week. She had started to have contractions and they thought she was having the baby early, but the doctors had managed to stop them and get everything back under control.
That meant (Y/n) had to go on early leave so she wouldn't be too stressed or overwhelmed and go into early labour.
But Jim was still working, and (Y/n) didn't like being home alone without him like this. She wanted to be with people, with her family, and she thought it might be good to come here and see the team for a little while.
"Let's go get a drink, I think Street's in the kitchen."
(Y/n) nodded and let them steer her towards the kitchen. Somehow, it felt strange to be back here when she knew she still had months left on leave where she would hardly be visiting at all. Swat was a busy place, visiting was allowed and encouraged but it wasn't always possible with how busy their teams got. (Y/n) knew that better than anybody.
But she also knew that once their baby was born, Jim would want to bring them here to show them off to everyone at least once.
When they headed into the kitchen, (Y/n) slumped her bag down onto the counter so she dind't have to keep lugging it around with her.
Her eyes set on Jim immediately and it made a smile pull at her lips when she looked at him. He had his back to them, one hip cocked out at the side and his head at an angle while he poured himself and Chris a drink.
Heading over to them, (Y/n) kept her steps light and the moment she was close enough, she bound her arms around Jim's waist making him shudder. His body pressed into the counter like he was expecting someone to try and tackle him to the ground. But he soon recognised who was binding themselves to him. Not that many people would come up and hug him, especially at work.
If it was Chris hugging him it was usually because something was wrong or one of them needed comfort. And if it was Luca he slung an arm around Jim's neck and reeled him in for a sideways bear hug. So the only logical person who would be hugging him so fondly and tightly like this would be his wife.
He felt (Y/n)'s face pressing into his back between his shoulder blades and his lips curved into a smile when her hands pressed down into his chest and he could feel her bump moulding up against his lower back near his hips.
"Hey baby, what're you doing here?" He slid a cup across to Chris before he reached his hand down to give (Y/n)'s hand a squeeze.
He stayed pressed up into the counter, sipping on his drink for a moment before (Y/n) finally relented and took a few steps back so he could turn around in her arms. He left his cup on the counter and slung his arm around the back of her shoulders and the other around her waist.
The signature grin lit up Jim's face and he tilted his head down so he could steal a kiss from her lips. She wasn't on shift like he was, (Y/n) was clearly here on a passing visit which meant there were no rules against showing any PDA. None of the team cared if Jim wrapped himself around his wife or if he kissed her, they wouldn't say anything.
"I got lonely." It wasn't fun being home alone when her partner and all their friends were here at work. (Y/n) felt like she was missing out on something. She didn't like being on her own.
She could feel Jim smiling against her skin when he peppered a few kisses along her cheek and down her neck. He knew she would be restless at home, he was surprised she hadn't turned up here before now.
When she turned around, (Y/n) leaned her head back on Jim's shoulder and her back into his chest just a little, not wanting to use him as a leaning post but it was very tempting. She felt his right arm loop around her waist, hand settling on her stomach while he reached over and grabbed his coffee. Both of them watching as Hondo and Deacon set about getting some drinks from the fridge.
"So, what have I missed?" (Y/n) kindly shook her head when Deacon offered one of the juice bottles out to her.
She wasn't thirsty. She didn't feel great today, one of the reasons she had stopped by. She was feeling restless and her headache had been blinding her all morning. Being around the team felt like something that would keep her occupied and take her mind off how uncomfortable she was beginning to feel.
"As if Street hasn't already been keeping you updated." Deacon tilted his head to one side with raised brows that dared them to say he was wrong.
They weren't stupid. They knew Jim would go home and tell (Y/n) all the strange, crazy and hard calls she was missing while she was off work. She wanted to be kept in the loop and like she was still part of the team while she was off.
"Alright, what have I missed today?" She countered while she switched her weight from one leg to the other to see if it would help with the pain in her lower back. It didn't do much.
"Today? Nothing."
A conversation began to flow through the kitchen while (Y/n) started to drum her fingertips on the counter beside her. She didn't feel great. She tried to focus on the feeling of Jim's fingers twitching against her stomach like he always did whenever he was near her.
Her features softened and she leaned further back into Jim when she felt him murmur "You good?" against the shell of her ear.
She managed a nod and hummed back as she pressed her lips against the tip of his jaw.
"Well, how about we-" Whatever Hondo was about to say got abruptly cut off when one of the warning tones started blaring out through the speakers. That wasn't one of their drills, and they didn't have any emergency drills or fire alarm testings scheduled for today.
All of them tilted their heads back as if a reason or explanation would flash across the air above their heads along with the sirens. That wasn't a fire drill. It wasn't an evacuation drill and it wasn't a training exercise.
It was the emergency alarm.
(Y/n) felt both Jim's hands move down to hold her hips as his chest stiffened and pressed up into her back while she gripped the counter tighter. All eyes fell on Hondo who quickly pointed to the kitchen.
"Let's find out what's going on."
All of them followed him from the kitchen, briskly walking down the hall until their eyes locked on Commander Hicks approaching the gym from the stairs. Luca was already near the boxing ring along with Rocker and his team. A light shone in Luca's eyes when he glanced over at (Y/n) who he hadn't known was here. He nodded his chin and smiled briefly at her before their attention went back to Hicks.
"Commander, what's happening?" Hondo's hands fell to his hips as they all gathered around, usure why some people wre rushing upstairs or down the back corridor towards the car park.
"A suspect in our custody was just about to be transported from base. We don't know how, but someone found out he was here, started shooting before the car got out of base."
That didn't sound good. (Y/n) had come in on a day that had gone from boring to chaotic in less than ten minutes.
"Rocker, I want your team outside, get that prisoner back inside and those shooters under control. Everyone else stay inside, this place is on lock down. They knew he was here somehow."
They all knew what that meant. Either someone had seen the suspect arrested and knew where he was being taken, or someone on the inside had alerted others that he was here. Either solution wasn't great but they had to get this situation under control. It wasn't safe for anyone to be going out in this mess unless they really had to.
They couldn't try and evacuate the prisoner from here and transport him if the shooters were still observing from outside. And that meant no one else could leave either in case they became targets.
Rocker darted off to assemble his team and come up with a plan while the rest of them shared confused and rather worried looks. Were they just meant to stay inside and observe? Make sure everyone here was okay and keep the situation under control? Could they not do anything else to help?
Except (Y/n), of course. She wasn't technically meant to be here, she was a visitor and as such she couldn't do anything to help the team. Not that she could do much anyway except for go and try to help in the computer room.
"I take it I'm staying too?" (Y/n) tried to smile and her head tilted at an angle when she caught the commander's eye.
He seemed to do a double take, as if he had either not noticed her presence or forgot she was here ni a visiting capacity rather than a work ethic.
"Oh… yeah, sorry (Y/n). For the time being you're stuck here with us."
She nodded while she felt Jim's hands on her hips and his lips and nose meshing against the back of her head. It wouldn't be safe for (Y/n) to try and make a quick exit back home, not with a shooter somewhere outside. Until everyone else could leave safely, (Y/n)'s best bet was to stay here with her team.
It would make her day interesting rather than going home and sitting on her own feeling bored.
Although (Y/n) did feel like she wanted to sit down, the ache in her lower back was steadily getting more and more uncomfortable. And her stomach felt unusually heavy.
"Let's go get a plan in motion and check any available security cameras."
(Y/n) felt Jim squeeze her hips in a silent request for her to follow along with them. There was no point (Y/n) sitting around and waiting when she could still try and help them. They were all going to be working from within the base right now, (Y/n) could easily tag along even if it was just to observe and stop herself from getting bored.
The pair of them followed along with the rest of the team towards the computer room and (Y/n) prayed the air con would be on in there. She was starting to burn up in here.
When they all blundered through into the computer room, (Y/n) moved over to one side so she would be out the way. She didn't want to be in the middle of the room, not when she wasn't going to have a lot of input and she wasn't technically working either. Nor did she want too many eyes on her when she didn't feel well.
It might be worth her while to go and sit in the kitchen for a while and grab a drink after all.
"Alright?" Jim whispered into the top of her head before he moved to stand beside her.
His arms folded over his chest and he cocked one knee forward while he watched Luca move over to grab an IPad which he connected to the big screen at the back of the room. He was loading up a map so they could work out what to do and where they could put Rocker's team so they would be hidden away in blindspots to give them some advantages.
Hunching forward, (Y/n) laid her arms on the table in front of her and sank her teeth down into her lip. Leaning forward like this made her feel a bit better, but she still felt like she should leave the room.
Her eyes danced around the room, seeing the commander and Hondo trying to come up with a game plan while Deacon helped Luca find some more maps.
She could barely focus or register what anyone was saying, she just felt like blending into the walls and disappearing. It wasn't like anyone was asking for her help anyway, (Y/n) and about five other Swat members were just crammed into the room, silent but observing.
When Jim waltzed over to the screen and started pointing out advantage points and security cameras on the streets, (Y/n) took that as her moment to try and disappear unknowingly.
She pushed up off the counter and carefully tried weaving past the desk, towards the other side of the room. She could go down the back corridor and get to the kitchen. If anyone noticed her going, they would know where she was aiming for.
Her left hand dragged up and down the back of her neck as she stuck close to the wall in case she needed some help with balance and to try and blend in.
She kept glancing her eyes around the room as if she was checking if anyone noticed her trying to make a slow disappearance. She locked eyes with Deacon who looked her up and down and rose a brow, asking a silent question to check she was alright and where she was going.
But he quickly thrust the tablet in his hand down on the desk in favour of reaching out for (Y/n) when she stumbled.
"Woah, you okay?" His voice was quiet, trying in vain not to catch any attention, but when he noticed where (Y/n) was looking, he followed her line of sight.
He had one hand on her back and the other on her arm while (Y/n) held onto his forearm with both hands to steady herself. Her eyes were cast down on the floor and Deacon felt the shudder that passed through her, and when he looked down, he realised what the problem was.
Her waters had broken.
"Uh Street, we have a situation." He gently squeezed (Y/n)'s arm while he looked over his shoulder and locked eyes with Jim. Although Deacon's statement had caught the attention of everyone who stopped what they were talking about to try and see what was going on.
"What? Oh, oh shit." Jim's wide brown eyes deepened and his lips parted but no more words filtered past his lips when he weaved round the table and looked over at his wife.
His hands found her waist and her hand, taking over from Deacon who took a step back once he knew (Y/n) was alright and not about to topple over.
Her head leaned back on Jim's shoulder as a petrified, apologetic expression flooded her face. She hadn't meant for this to happen. If (Y/n) knew the discomfort she had been feeling was because she was going to go into labour she wouldn't of come down to the base to see them. Not if she knew it would end with her waters breaking here, right when they were in the middle of a situation.
But then again, if she had stayed at home, she wouldn't of had Jim here with her from the start. And who knows what time he would of gotten to her after this whole situation was sorted out.
"Deak, what's up?"
"My water broke… I- I'm sorry," (Y/n) darted her eyes down before she looked up at Hondo as if she were about to burst into tears.
A round of "Oh Hell," and "Damn, that changes the plans," chorused through the air while (Y/n) squeezed Jim's hand and leaned back into him a little. She felt his hand slither round from her back to cup the side of her stomach while he leaned his chest down into her back.
His eyes darted around the room, gaging the expressions of the team whilst also waiting for someone to tell him what they were planning to do. If this place was on lockdown, Jim couldn't exactly walk out those doors and get his wife in the car to take her to the hospital.
"How long are we on lockdown?"
"Until the situation outside is contained." The look in Hicks's eyes was wavering, despite his calm, if cold, expression. He understood. He knew this was a serious situation for (Y/n) and Jim and he knew they would want to get out of here and get home and to the hospital as soon as possible.
"What do we do then?" Luca leaned on the desk and looked up at Hicks before glancing over at the couple opposite him. This wasn't an ideal situation, they would have to work something out.
"I need to take her to home-"
"Street, you'll both have to stay here. We can't risk you going out there without that shooter contained. Staying inside is the best bet right now, I'm sorry."
"Then I hope one of you is a midwife." Jim's snappy response caught everyone off guard and no one had a response for that, not even Hicks.
They didn't know how long it was going to take for them to contain the shooter and get their suspect evacuated from here and transported into custody. They didn't know what was going to happen within the base right now and how long lockdown was going to take. Hopefully it wouldn't take long, but Hicks wasn't going to take any risks.
He wasn't allowing anyone to leave the base until they knew for certain that everything was under control. (Y/n) was here as a visitor and that meant her safety was their concern. He wouldn't let her get hurt while she was here under their protection as a visitor and member of the public, not to mention they were all like one big family here.
"Can I sit down?" (Y/n) looked up behind her at Jim who was about to usher her with him to grab a chair when Hicks waved his hand out at them.
"Come on, you can both wait in my office until we can get you safely out of here."
That was a solution, for the time being. But it wasn't a long term solution and (Y/n) prayed they could go home soon. They needed to get ready, to get their maternity bag and the car seat and everything they needed from home. And they had to go get booked into the maternity ward at the hospital when the contractions got close.
They couldn't stay here for long, (Y/n) was in labour and the baby wasn't going to wait forever.
***
(Y/n) closed her eyes and buried her face in the arm of the sofa, smothering a groan. Her back was starting to ache and twinge from how she was sat hunched over, but she didn't know what to do with herself anymore. The contractions were getting worse and they were still at headquarters.
It didn't feel right to be sitting here in Hicks's office, but it was the best place to be right now. It was shut off from the rest of Swat, private and gave them room to move about or sit down, depending on what (Y/n) felt like doing.
She took as many deep breaths as she could manage, but it felt like her lungs were on fire. They were burning like she was breathing in smoke and she could feel her lungs inflating and deflating which was something (Y/n) never normally took notice of. And it was horrid.
"We're down to less than five minutes apart now." Chris looked down at her phone before she looked over at Jim who was sat on the sofa next to his wife.
He had one hand on (Y/n)'s back and the other clutching his knee like he was Bruce Banner doing his best not to turn into the Hulk. He looked over at one of his closest friends who had been timing the contractions for them. Chris was sat on the desk chair she had wheeled over towards the sofa. Her knees spread apart, elbows on her thighs and her phone now being tossed from one hand to the other to distract herself.
They both knew what this meant. If they didn't leave soon, there wouldn't be time to get (Y/n) to the hospital.
"I'll go find Hicks-"
"Don't you go anywhere!" (Y/n) clutched her hand around Jim's wrist before he had chance to lean away from her, let alone try and get up from the sofa.
She wasn't having him disappear around the base, she wasn't having Jim leave her alone for a second, not for anything. Their baby was coming and he had to stay with her, (Y/n) wasn't doing any of this alone.
"I'll go-" Chris didn't have chance to offer before there was a knock at the door and Hondo, Deacon and Luca filed into the room.
All three of them looked around like they weren't sure what they were expecting to find, but Jim's stern expression wasn't on their list. He looked livid. They had been stuck here for hours and time was dwindling away along with their chances of getting (Y/n) safely to a hospital to have this baby.
"Can we go now?" The determination in Jim's voice was like nothing any of them had ever heard before and the way he raised one brow made them all feel like school children about to be told off.
"The man in custody still hasn't been transported yet and Rocker's team haven't found all of the suspects. We can escort you outta here as soon as they've been found."
"By then it's gonna be too late. This is fucking Swat, we have to do something!"
Jim tightened his hand around (Y/n)'s while he slammed his other hand down on his thigh. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. They were supposed to be at home when (Y/n)'s water broke. She was supposed to be safe. Jim was supposed to drive her to the hospital and be there with her when she had the baby, not be here at work under lockdown.
Since the moment he met (Y/n), Jim wanted things to be different. He wanted their relationship to be like how he always dreamed. The opposite of his parent's marriage. He wanted to have kids with her and give his kids a stable upbringing and a loving home. He wanted (Y/n) and their baby to have a safe birth, not something unconventional like this.
"Ooh," (Y/n) closed her eyes and smushed her face into the arm rest again while she tugged on Jim's hand. "T-this baby's coming. Someone's g… gonna have to help me!"
The desperation in (Y/n)'s voice was coupled with tears soaking into the sofa as she groaned in agony. If they wouldn't take her to hospital, then one of them was going to have to do something. She couldn't have this baby by herself and her body was telling her it was time.
A look seemed to pass between them all before Deacon rolled his eyes at the team and crouched down in front of (Y/n).
"Would you be okay with me helping you? I'm not exactly trained, but I've been through this four times already." Deacon rested his hand on (Y/n)'s knee as he waited patiently for her to talk to him.
He was by no means qualified as a midwife and he wasn't an expert on labour and giving birth, but he had four kids. Deacon had been there for every birth and he had seen them all play out. He cut the cords with each child as well so he had some expertise in this area. He would help until they could get some medics down here.
(Y/n) twisted her head so her cheek was meshed into the sofa and she nodded with a pleading look in her eyes. She didn't care who helped her, she would let any of the team coach her through this if they knew what to do. She just needed help.
She went back to clutching Jim's hand and she held it to her chest while she sat up properly and sank back into the sofa. Her head fell onto Jim's shoulder when he shuffled up so he was sat beside her with his left arm around the back of her shoulders. His lips attached to the side of her head while Deacon crouched in front of them to see if (Y/n) was dilated or not.
This was definitely going to change the dynamics when (Y/n) eventually came back to work. The team weren't supposed to be here or be involved in the birth of their baby.
"Okay, this baby is coming now. Luca, we're gonna need towels, hot water, blankets and a medic bag from inventory."
"I'm on it." Luca was out the door in a flash to go and grab what they needed, fist-bumping the air at the thought of having a kid be born at Swat. This was going to be a first.
"Alright… I think you can start pushing whenever you're ready."
She didn't want to. She didn't want to be doing this here. As much as (Y/n) loved the team who were now her family, having one of them delivering her baby felt a little too close for comfort. She was changing the boundaries. Giving Deacon a scarred image burned into his mind for life.
She briefly looked up when she noticed movement. It was Hondo, moving towards the desk at the other side of the room so it didn't look like he was being a spectator. He knew it wasn't nice for (Y/n) to be doing this here and he didn't want to observe or make her feel uncomfortable.
He reached out for the phone on the desk so he could send a call through to the Commander and let him know what was happening. And to tell him they would have to send out for an ambulance.
"I'm scared," (Y/n) could barely find her voice and when she did, her breathing hitched and her voice came out higher than usual but at half the volume. She was barely talking above a whisper.
"You don't have to be scared, I'm right here, we're all here." Jim pressed a kiss to her cheek and squeezed her into his chest. They were going to look after her, she was with some of the safest people in the country. It would be okay.
He looked behind Deacon who was looking around the room for anything he might have to use if they got desperate, and looked over towards Chris. As if they were sharing the same thought, Chris scooted the desk chair around until she was beside the sofa.
When she held her hand out in front of (Y/n), a panicked smile formed on (Y/n)'s lips and she took her friend's hand. Having Chris on one side, and Jim attached to her other side made (Y/n) feel protected and safe.
And she heard Chris whisper a quiet but encouraging "You got this." which made her feel a little better.
"Alright alright I think I got everything we need to have the first kid born in Swat."
Luca sounded like a cheerleader pumping them up for a big game rather than a team member trying to help a friend have a baby. But his excitement was somehow soothing and made a smile light up Jim's face, despite the panic he was feeling surging through his body right now.
Deacon was rather impressed that Luca remembered everything and managed to carry it all up here.
He set down a pile of towels beside the sofa, two blankets, one of which he handed out to Jim so it could be draped over (Y/n)'s lap for modesty. He dumped the medic bag from his shoulder and a bowl of warm water next to Deacon.
(Y/n) tried to push back into the sofa and brace her feet properly on the floor so she wasn't at risk of sliding down into Deacon's lap. The last thing she wanted was to end up hurting him or landing on the floor. And she watched through blurry eyes as he washed his hands thoroughly, found some gloves in the medic bag and got a towel on his lap.
They were really doing this here. In the Commander's office.
"Okay, I think you're crowning."
(Y/n) felt a little better when Jim leaned his chin on her shoulder and she coiled their entwined hands closer to merge their hands against her chest.
This wasn't the way either of them dreamt about having their first child together, but it was comforting to have the team around them. (Y/n) couldn't of done this alone at home or amongst strangers if the team hadn't of been here at the right time.
She tried to smile when she felt Jim attaching his lips to her neck and she leaned to the right to press her side more into his embrace to try and keep herself relaxed as much as possible.
"Okay (Y/n), I need you to do big pushes, let's have this kid." Deacon pushed up on his knees and moved his hands to (Y/n)'s thighs, seeing the familiar sight of a head being born.
"You're doing so well," Jim murmured against her neck as he darted his eyes around the office he hadn't spent more than a minute in at a time.
It was strange to be sat, almost relaxing, in the Commander's office. This was somewhere the whole squad usually felt uncomfortable, where they would come to if they had a problem or if they thought they were going to get reprimanded for something. This wasn't somewhere they would sit and chat and definitely not somewhere (Y/n) imagined she would be having her baby.
The next time she came to Commander Hicks's office in the future, this was going to be the memory that always came to mind.
"I can't believe I'm actually here for this." Chris gave (Y/n)'s hand a tight squeeze and the grin on her face made (Y/n)'s heart skip.
They had already told Chris that she was Godmother to their baby, there was no question about it. Not when she was Jim's best friend and she had always been there for the couple, it was only fitting that she would be their child's auntie and Godmother.
But Chris didn't think she would get the honour of witnessing her godchild's birth. She was expecting to be the first person to receive the phone call to say the baby was born, but this was even better.
(Y/n) pulled her knees up a little higher and leaned forward, feeling grateful when Jim leaned with her. He was like a backboard keeping her up straight and letting her lean her weight onto him so she didn't have to think or bother with holding herself upright.
"And the head's out, take a breath. Then little pushes, okay? You're doing great (Y/n)."
(Y/n) tried to nod and it was a relief to see that Deacon didn't look at all phased or panicked. He looked as calm as if he were leading them on a callout or giving them orders around base. This seemed to be a natural occurrence for Deacon.
Just a little more effort, and she would have a baby in her arms. All the pain would be worth it when she saw their baby and watched them be placed into Jim's arms. All his life since he was ten years old, all Jim ever wanted was a family. He'd grown up for the first decade of his life with bickering, fighting parents and a sense of fear and dread towards his father. After he went into foster care, he felt a gratitude towards his mum that he could never repay, she made him believe she had saved his life and gave him guilt.
All he wanted in the system was to be let out and live with a loving family, he wanted something to call his own.
Now, Jim had that. He was about to have a family of his own that would love him unconditionally and be his and his alone. He would have (Y/n) and a child to shower with love.
"(Y/n), you're doing great, but I need you to keep pushing as swiftly as you can for me, okay?"
(Y/n) opened her eyes and tried to blink back into focus after being lost in her thoughts, but she shuddered when she realised Deacon didn't look as calm as he had done a few moments ago. She tugged on Jim's hand, pulling his arm across her chest while her head tilted to one side and she scrutinised the look on Deacon's face.
His mouth was set into a thin, straight line and his jaw was locked tight like he was trying to keep some secrets at bay. His brows furrowed like his concentration had amplified ten times and he was moving the towel in his arms a bit higher to reach for the baby.
"W-what's wrong?"
A frown pulled on Jim's face in place of a smile and he tightened his left arm around (Y/n)'s waist while his other hand was confiscated and still held into her chest. He let her lean more into his chest while he looked down at Deacon and silently shook his head to imply that he didn't know what was wrong, but he needed to know. Now.
"The cord's around the neck." Deacon diverted his eyes up to look at Jim before he shifted his attention right back to the baby he was delivering.
He didn't want to panic (Y/n) in case she stopped pushing or it slowed down her momentum if she began to panic. But he knew she heard him when her legs tensed and she tried to lean forward like she wanted to see for herself if it was true.
He couldn't risk moving the cord now when there wasn't enough of the umbilical cord exposed and Deacon couldn't pull on the cord when the baby and placenta weren't delivered yet. He could cause a lot of damage trying to move the cord right now, he had to wait.
"Deak…"
"It's okay, as long as you keep pushing we can easily sort this. Trust me, okay?" When (Y/n) nodded, Deacon looked up at Chris. "I'm gonna need an extra set of hands."
Chris squeezed (Y/n)'s hand tightly before she let go and slid off the desk chair so she was crouched down on her knees beside Deacon. She hated the way (Y/n) shook and her arm seemed to stretch out, following her friend because she needed that support. She needed to hold someone's hand.
But they were both surprised when Luca held a firm hand out in front of (Y/n) as he crouched beside the sofa in Chris's place. He didn't mind offering some comfort, and (Y/n) could squeeze or even break his hand if she needed to. They were all here to help her through this.
(Y/n) closed her eyes and leaned forward as much as she could until she felt Jim's arm tightening around her waist like he thought she was about to fall onto the floor. He kept tight hold around her and leaned his chest into her side, moulding around her like a safety blanket as she cried out and started to shake from how badly she was trying to push.
She could feel her feet fidgeting against the floor, anxious to try and push up or move or slide against the floor. She wanted to move, to do anything to relieve the tension and get this over with.
Her breaths came out in small pants and she screamed just as Deacon shifted his arms up and wrapped the towel around the newborn.
"There we go, you've done it."
When she felt Jim's chin settle on her shoulder so he could peer down, (Y/n) tried to look up at him, but he wasn't smiling. His brows were furrowed and he was watching Deacon closely like a hawk with dark eyes and a firmly set jaw.
Jim's stomach tensed and his nose crinkled when he watched Deacon place the small bundle into Chris's waiting arms so he could slide his finger in between the newborn's neck and the blushing pink cord. He gave a small tug and pulled the cord up, unravelling it from the baby's neck as carefully but swiftly as he cold.
They didn't know how long the cord had been like that or if it had been tight or loose. It could of happened during labour, it could have been like that before her water broke, they didn't know.
"Alright, there we go little one." Deacon pressed his fingers to the newborn's lips, checking the airways weren't blocked before he started to rub his fingers over their chest to stimulate the lungs into working. They needed the baby to breathe; everyone on the team seemed to be holding their breaths in nervous anticipation.
The moment a small cry flooded through the air, (Y/n) felt like she was going to faint and she started to gasp for breath. She felt Jim's wet lips smothering the side of her head and she leaned into the touch, giving a small tug on his hand as she grinned and closed her eyes.
"It's a boy." A smile finally flooded Deacon's lips as he found a few things in the medical kit to use as clamps so he could cut the cord.
He could see Chris was almost at the point of shaking as she stared down at the little boy in her arms who was now her Godson. It wasn't often that Deacon had seen Chris cry, much less happy tears like this but the sight as was lovely as it was surprisingly.
She didn't seem like she was very willing to let the newborn go, but she begrudgingly pushed up on her knees and leaned forward so she could place the little boy into (Y/n)'s trembling arms.
(Y/n) could feel a mixture of her and Jim's tears running down her face when he smothered his lips against her cheek. They had a little boy. They'd had their baby. He was here, and he had been delivered by their team.
Jim realised he was starting to get the shakes when his right hand let go of (Y/n)'s and he cupped his hand around the back of their boy's head. He looked oddly small, curled up into (Y/n)'s chest like that, but the way he started to smack and part his lips made a laugh tumble past Jim's lips.
"He's a handsome little guy," Luca ran his hand up and down (Y/n)'s shoulder for a few moments while he sneaked a glance at the bundle in her arms.
(Y/n) traced her thumb over the back of her boy's head before she looked up at Jim and moved her arms towards him. She could see the light sparkling in his eyes at the prospect of holding his boy, his first baby. And tears were freely falling down his face when he unravelled his arm from around her waist so he could take their boy into his own arms.
It was a comforting weight to feel in his arms and leaning against his chest and it somehow made Jim feel like his whole life until this point had been hollow. This is what he had been missing. (Y/n) and their boy had been what Jim had been searching for all this time, and now he'd found them.
"Look at this little guy," Hondo grinned and leaned over the sofa while he patted his hand down on Jim's back. "The first person to be born at Swat, and the first Swat member to ever have a baby here at headquarters."
"The only person, born at Swat." (Y/n) corrected while she let herself slump back into the sofa and succumb to the adrenaline that was making her tremble all over again. "I'm n-not doing this again with you all, sorry."
As much as (Y/n) loved the team and was thankful to them for what they had done, she didn't want to repeat this experience. Any other children she and Jim had would either be born at home or preferably at the hospital, not here at Swat. (Y/n) would be the one and only person to have her baby born here, and be the only Swat member to give birth here as she wasn't repeating this again and she knew Chris wasn't likely to give birth here either.
A round of laughs filled the air and the team leaned over to try and get a better look at the newborn. But when (Y/n) looked down at Deacon, something softened in her eyes.
He stripped the gloves from his hands and washed his hands and arms in the warm water bowl beside him. His expression was slightly dazed, but he didn't look as exasperated or shocked as the rest of them, and he was the one who had just delivered a baby today.
(Y/n) rolled her lips together and gently nudged her elbow into Jim's arm before she glanced her eyes from him down to Deacon. A silent exchange happened between them like they were sending secret messages to one another. But they were on the same wavelength, Jim knew exactly what (Y/n) was silently trying to ask and he nodded.
She gently nudged her trembling knee into Deacon's arm to gain his attention. "Thank you." She was never going to be able to thank him enough for what he had just done for them, but they knew a way to share their gratitude.
"You're very welcome," Deacon suddenly looked tired, like the energy had dwindled out of him with all the excitement flooding the room. As if it was finally settling in and dawning on him what he had just experienced.
"Didn't think you'd get to deliver your Godchild, did you?"
The question was so calm, so normal and said almost in passing that Deacon laughed and nodded, about to make a remark before the words actually settled in his mind. Once they registered, his brows furrowed and his head snapped up to look from (Y/n) to Jim like he didn't quite believe them.
Everyone knew Chris was Godmother, but the couple hadn't made up their minds on who would be Godfather. Deacon had just sealed that choice for them.
"Wh- me, really?"
Jim lifted his arms a bit higher so he could cuddle his baby boy closer to his chest and he kissed his temple delicately. And when he looked over at Deacon, his lips formed a proud smile.
"You've earned it."
“Hey, I got you some ice cream”
You heard the voice of Jim Street next to you as he held the ice cream in front of your face making you smile.
“Thanks” you took the ice cream “What’s the occasion?”
“You were complaining how hot it was today, so I thought about getting you ice cream while we took a call.” He explained smiling.
You let out a dramatic gasp with an open mouth “Officer Street are you telling me that while your team was out there chasing a criminal you went to get ice cream?”
He chuckles at you “No, I meant after”
As you were eating the ice cream “Well it’s ice cream I don’t care if some bad guy was running around the city I have the best thing known to man.”
Street knew your love for ice cream so he knows this would make your day, Deacon and Hondo made their way to you as they heard your statement.
“Don’t let Higgs hear you saying that.” Hondo said as he chuckles.
“He would think you would sell the entire LAPD for ice cream if someone bribed you.” Deacon commented.
You looked at him as you ate “Bold of you to assume I wouldn’t do that.”
The man stood there shocked, that’s when you, Street and Hondo burst into laughter. All through the day after every call one of the guys got you something, you got ice cream, iced coffee, smoothie whatever it was it was cold and you were thankful for that. At the end of the day when your shift ended you were in pain as you were making your way out of the building, the guys were in front of you when Luca turned to look at you.
“What’s wrong with you? You don’t look good.” He tells you.
Everyone turned to look at you.
“I think all the things I got today kind of effected my stomach” you tell them “Next time I complain of the heat just throw me in an ice bath okay” you groan.
They laughed at your comment and Luca gave you a pill to help with the stomachache.
A/N: finally wrote something.
Warnings: mentions of nausea, vomiting, and pregnancy.
“Hey babe, I’ve got to go.”, Luca’s voice, your fiancé who belonged to SWAT’s voice rang out. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay?”
He came in the bedroom, looking at you in bed. You knew you looked terrible—pale as a ghost, sweaty, and wiping the tears from your eyes.
“Yes, I’ll be fine. Go to work. And don’t worry about me.”, you sniffled.
Luca’s face wore concern as he touched the door way. “I’ll always worry about you.”
“Not during a mission. Nope. You know the rules.”
“That was when we first started dating and I wasn’t sure things were going to get serious.”
You rolled your eyes easily, sitting up in bed but instantly feeling so sick that you had to immediately lay back down.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”, you groaned.
Luca came over to the bed, siting on the edge. He sat on his empty side of the bed. You weren’t going to lie—it wasn’t so bad when he left for work some days and you could have the entire bed to yourself and sleep in. But today wasn’t shaping up to be a great day. You had already called your boss, letting them know you wouldn’t be in today. This had been going on for a few mornings but you were sure there was something going around.
He brushed through your hair easily. “I just hate leaving you when you’re feeling bad.”
“I know. But I’m a big girl, I can handle myself.”
Luca rolled his eyes, scoffing playfully. “Fine. Mrs. Independent. But if you need anyone—Annie’s number’s on the fridge.”
“Also have it in my phone.”, you smirked at him, shaking it lightly.
Luca smirked back. “I love you. I’ll see you tonight. Unless it’s an all night job.”
“Okay, honey. Be careful. I love you too.”
He kissed your head, brushing through your hair again. “Get some rest.”
“I’ll try.”
__________________________________________________________________________
Back at SWAT headquarters, Luca was in the locker room. The assignment was already given by Hondo. Most of the team had already finished getting ready minus Deacon.
“Hey Luca. How’s Y/N?”
Luca looked up at him. “Not so great. She had a really rough morning. Woke up—said she felt dizzy, nausea, vomiting. This is like the third day in a row. She couldn’t hardly keep water down, man.”
Deacon’s eyes widened before he stifled a small laugh. “Dude.”
“What?”
“Ever think she could be having morning sickness?”
“Morning sickness?”, Luca repeated.
“Yeah—as in she’s pregnant.”
Luca scoffed playfully before resolving in laughter. “No way man.”
Deacon shrugged his shoulders lightly before smirking at Luca whilst leaning against his locker. “Just saying—Annie and I have been through this four times already.”
Luca rolled his eyes. “Well, we aren’t trying.”
“Don’t have to be.”
“She wants to get married first. I respect that, Deac.”
Deacon smirked easily before patting Luca on the shoulder. “Alright, Luca. Let’s get ready to head out.”
Luca nodded, his smile fading softly. What if Deacon was right? He swallowed hard, thinking about the possibility. He wanted nothing more than to have his own family. But he knew that there were steps you wanted to take first. There had been many women in and out of his life but none of them understood that SWAT came first. You did—and it blew his mind. You understood when he was late coming home—sometimes never coming home until the next morning just as you were getting up and getting ready for work.
You’d never admit to Luca that on the nights he didn’t come home, you barely slept. You worried about him. But you knew this would be part of your life as long as you were with him—and you wanted that to be forever. Luca shook his head, trying to get the thought away. At least just during the mission.
Back at home, you finally trudged your way into the living room. You barely made it to the couch, that queasy feeling never quite leaving. You laid down, a sigh of relief finally escaping you as you turned on the television and began watching one of your favorite reality shows. 90 Day Fiancé. It was almost comical how in love these people seemed to be, giving themselves ninety days to get married in. It was something you could never do.
After being emerged in your show, you heard a knock on the door. You debated not answering it. Whatever it was, it could wait. But you all didn’t live in the best part of LA. But it was up and coming. Another couple of knocks came to the door and you sighed, lifting yourself off the couch painfully slow.
“Coming.”, you barely got out.
Standing up only made you feel worse, that queasy feeling intensifying. It was miserable. Quickly, you opened the door to reveal none other than Annie Kay.
“Annie.”, you smiled even through the sickness.
“Y/N. How are you feeling?”
She took you in a hug and you prayed she wouldn’t squeeze too tight. That might be the thing that sent you over the edge.
“Uh okay—just really nauseous.”
“Oh my gosh—come on, let’s get you to the couch. You look a little green around the gills.”
“I am.”, you sighed as she ushered you over to the couch. “Did Luca send you?”
“Well, not exactly. Deacon had said you weren’t feeling well and I thought I’d run by and check in on you.”
She sat you down before laying her purse in the chair across the couch. “Lay back.”
You didn’t argue with her suggestion considering you felt like you could throw up at any given second.
“How long has this been going on?”
“A couple of days.”
“Have you eaten anything and kept it down?”
“Not exactly.”
Annie’s lips curved in disapproval. “I’ll get a cool washcloth.”
You heard her move through the house, working her way to the bathroom and eventually finding the towel closet. You closed your eyes, praying that you wouldn’t throw up anymore. You were so sore from dry heaving. As you heard Annie approach, you opened your eyes softly.
“Have you thought about going to the hospital?”
“No. Why waste valuable resources on someone who doesn’t need them? I’m sure it’s a virus or a stomach bug or something.”
Annie looked at you disapprovingly as she laid the washcloth on your forehead. “Because it could be something else going on.”
“Annie, you don’t have to do this. Aren’t your kids at home? They need you more than I do.”
“We’re family. We SWAT girlfriends, fiancees, wives have to stick together.”, she smirked. “We’ll always be here for you. Besides my mom is there with the kids right now. It’s fine.”
You smiled softly. Ever since Luca introduced you to Annie, you all had became quick friends. It was a no brainer considering your partners worked together. But it was nice to have someone around who understood how you felt—your worries, your fears, how much you loved the man that made you feel all of these things. Annie understood that a hundred percent and validated your feelings, letting you know they were normal. She recounted memories from when Deacon was a police officer before transitioning to SWAT.
SWAT only intensified her worry but she knew it was his passion—it was something he loved. And Luca was no different—considering he grew up around his father and grandfather. There was no talking him out of trying out for SWAT.
“Thanks. It means a lot—oh crap. Annie, can you grab that small trash can? I think I’m going to be sick.”
Annie jumped off the couch, quickly grabbing the trash can and immediately handing it to you before she pulled your hair back. It was no time before you were back to your same morning routine—dry heaving. You began coughing lightly as Annie looked on sympathetically. She stroked your hair lightly as if she was trying to reassure you. Your eyes were full of tears and you could barely see as you rubbed them, hoping the torture was over.
Sighing, Annie sat the trash can down on the floor. “You didn’t have anything to really throw up.”
“I know.”, you sighed. “I’m sorry you had to see that.”
“Don’t worry, I have four kids. I’m used to a little vomit.”, she smirked playfully before her voice deadpanned, turning slightly more serious. “I really think you need to get checked out.”
“I’m fine.”
“Y/N.”
“Really, Annie—I am. I even feel better now. I’m gonna go try and shower.”
Annie watched from the sidelines as you threw your blanket back and swung your legs over the side of the couch, planting them firmly on the hardwood floor. You felt dizzy and light headed but decided to continue on your stubborn way and you were damn determined to get to the bathroom and take a quick shower regardless.
“Are you sure you feel okay?”
“I’m fine.”, you repeated, being insistent. “Really.”
She backed off easily, realizing quickly that she wasn’t going to win this argument. She knew you were determined, driven in your own way, and slightly stubborn. It made sense why you and Luca were so good for another. You all balanced each other out in some ways. It took so much effort to put one foot in front of the other and you prayed Annie wasn’t noticing your struggle. You could feel her eyes on you but tried to ignore it.
The bedroom began to grow blurry as you cleared the door frame, barely closing the door. You had to steady yourself for a moment before continuing. At least you were alone now and Annie couldn’t see you struggling. Breathing a slight sigh of relief, you continued to the bathroom. Things seemed to go from bad to worse, vision blurring further to the point you could barely make out the shapes of the shower, sink, and toilet. Your body began to sway, eyes closing and everything faded to black.
The mission was getting hot and heavy, the SWAT team coming upon the house with hostages inside. That’s when Cortez radioed Hondo.
“This is Captain Cortez to 20 David.”
“This is 20 David.”
“Is there any way Luca can be pulled out safely without compromising the team or mission?”
“Negative, Captain. Not right now. Is something wrong?”
Cortez sighed before responding. “Annie is on her way to the hospital with Y/N. She passed out at home. Just get him out as soon as you can.”
“I will.”, Hondo promised.
Hondo sighed as he ended the radio conversation, refocusing his attention to the matter at hand. Watching Luca spring into action while having no clue what was going on behind the scenes was gut wrenching. He could only imagine how Luca’s reaction would be when he told him but right now he didn’t have time to think about that. There are things that needed to happen before he could do that. As long as things went smoothly, this would end soon and he could tell Luca about what was going on with you.
The team worked like a well oiled machine, staying in the zone. It wasn’t the first time they had been in a similar situation. Everyone knew their role and the knew it well. Hondo gave gentle orders, they followed. It was that simple. The moment of truth came, the moment they had been waiting for. Chris had a clear shot and was able to subdue the target. So far, things were successful. Hondo hoped they stayed that way. He knew he needed to pull Luca as soon as he could.
Besides his parents, you were the only other person he was so close to. Hondo could tell how much he loved you—how much he cared about you. No other woman had made it this far with Luca so he knew you were special. There was something about you. He could remember when Luca had a little more pep in his step. Hondo knew in that moment there was another woman. After the team teased and prodded at him to gain some information, they didn’t think it would last.
Luca didn’t have a good track record with women or relationships. So when things went the opposite way and Luca brought you to meet the team, they knew things were different. He seemed serious about you. That was even before the proposal. It seemed like yesterday when Luca was acting weird—getting prompted by the team about what was going on. They all feared trouble in paradise. But they were so far off from what was really going on.
He sighed, finally telling them that he planned on proposing to you—that night. He asked them if they thought it was too soon or if you’d say yes. He got a few teasing answers but in all seriousness, everyone agreed that you’d be over the moon. That was one of the best days of your life. After watching the news all day and worrying about Luca, you were finally glad to see him that night. It was supposed to be dinner at a restaurant on the beach and then a walk on the beach.
He might have been late but he had a good excuse. He expected you to be angry but you understood why he was late. In that moment, you proved even further why he should marry you. You were the only woman who understood SWAT came first. It was a sacrifice you were willing to make if that meant being with Luca for the rest of your life.
You could hear all the sounds around you—people talking and moving around you. A familiar voice was one you picked up on—Annie. Slowly, you opened your eyes, everything coming into view. It was a white room, a sterile smell up in your nose. Were you at the hospital?
“Y/N?”, Annie touched your arm gently.
Turning to look at her, she finally came into view after you blinked a couple of times.
“What happened?”
“You passed out in the bathroom. I brought you here immediately. Your blood pressure was low, they did some blood work. The doctor should be in shortly.”
“I’ll get him.”, the nurse spoke up.
“Did you call for Luca?”
“I did. Jessica said she would get Luca out as soon as she could.”
You smirked. “SWAT comes first.”
Annie smirked back. “It’s part of this life, isn’t it?”
“It is. Thank you, Annie.”
“You’re welcome.”
Interrupting the heartfelt conversation, the sound of the curtain sliding back and the doctor entering the room got your all’s attention.
“Miss L/N?”
“Yes?”
“I’m Doctor Owens. I’m treating you today and I’d like to go over a few things with you since you’re awake now.”
You nodded.
He continued. “Is your husband on his way?”
“Fiancé and as soon as he can. He’s a police officer—well, he’s on SWAT.”
“One of LA’s finest.”
You smiled, instantly thinking about him and nodded lightly. Annie smiled at you sympathetically and you felt like she already had an idea of what was going on. You fiddled with the hem of your blanket lightly.
“Your blood pressure was low when you arrived. We did some blood work and determined that your iron levels were also low. Also, you had an abnormal result in your blood work.”, he smiled.
Why was he smiling?
“What’s going on?”, you asked easily.
Annie squeezed your arm reassuringly.
“You’re pregnant. Congratulations.”, the doctor smiled. “Your HCG levels are perfect. Your iron and blood pressure were low from early pregnancy. We just need your consent to give you some iron infusions before you leave. We might keep you overnight, just observe you.”
“Pregnant?”, you repeated, feeling like the wind had been taken out of your sails.
The doctor nodded. “Around four weeks. Still early but everything looks great. I’ll be happy to go over the results once your fiancé arrives.”
You nodded softly, swallowing hard. The doctor disappeared behind the curtain and you instantly began to feel overwhelmed.
“I can’t believe this.”, Annie smiled. “Luca is going to be over the moon—oh, he’ll be so thrilled.”, she smiled.
“Are you sure?”, you laughed nervously and she could tell you were worried.
“I’m sure—he’s always wanted his own family.”
You began to feel a little numb, like you were disassociating slightly. It felt like a dream—but you weren’t sure if it was going to have a happy ending. You could only hope Luca would take the news well. You’d find out soon enough.
TO BE CONTINUED....
“You don’t need to cover up the bruises/hickeys.”
Pairing: Luca x Fem Reader
Summary: You’re a receptionist/you have a desk job at Swat. You’re in a relationship with Luca that you’ve recently gone public with.
Warnings: mentions of hickeys, references to smut!
————————————————————————
When you took the job as a receptionist in Swat the last thing you expected was to fall for a third generation Swat officer. You and Luca hit it off right away and you became good friends with Luca and the rest of the team.
But what the team didn’t know was that you and Luca had been in a secret relationship for around 6 months. Sneaking around in the locker room, making out in the back of the movie theatre, secret weekends away. At first it was nice to have it a secret, something that was only between you and Luca, however keeping that big a secret from the team proved impossible, especially when Luca and Street moved in together. The inevitable happend and Street walked in on you and Luca making out on the couch at Luca’s house one night with hardly any clothes on. Luca threw himself on top of you to hide your half naked body from Street’ s view, but the big grin that quickly grew on Street’s face meant that you and Luca would have to do some serious ass kissing to get Street to keep your secret.
Eventually you and Luca got sick of keeping the secret and on a team night out both you and Luca got drunk and started making out on the dance floor for everyone to see. When the team saw this they were shocked. They knew Luca had a girl on the down low- they just didn’t expect it to be you. Street then got the satisfaction of explaining about he walked in on you and Luca weeks ago and was happy with himself as he was the first of the team to know about the relationship.
Fast forward to today. You’re standing in Luca’s bathroom getting ready for work and trying to use whatever makeup you have on hand to cover the hickeys on your neck. The deep purple bruises are a reminder of the passionate night you had with Luca and although you thought they were a turn on and liked when Luca marked you as his- you didn’t want to deal with the jokes you’d get at work or the dirty looks from the Commander.
Luca walked into the bathroom to brush his teeth and saw what you were doing.
“Um, baby what are you doing?”, Luca questioned.
“What does it look like I’m doing?, I’m trying to cover these bruises for work Mr “I didn’t leave any marks on your neck”, you said with a hint of sarcasm in your voice.
Luca came behind you wrapping his muscular arms around your waist and resting his chin in the crook of your neck. “Look I was too focused on giving my baby a good time than to be worrying about any of that”, he whispered into your ear as a shiver went up your spine.
“You don’t need to cover up the hickeys”, he said looking at you in the mirror.
“You’re mine and I want the world to know that” he said leaving wet kisses on your neck.
“If anyone slags you off at work, you come tell me and I’ll deal with it ok”, Luca said moving away from you and going to brush his teeth and apply his deodorant and finish getting ready for work.
“Luca I’m not gonna go run to my boyfriend just cause someone makes a joke in work”, you laugh.
“I’m a big girl, I can handle myself”, you say, wiping the makeup off you neck, realising it didn’t cover anything anyway.
“Oh don’t I know it”, he smirked, smacking your ass and letting out a chuckle as he left the bathroom.
You had texted Chris, your best friend and the reason you got the job in Swat, telling her about the hickey situation. She found it hilarious and when you got to work you had prepared yourself for the jokes. Chris immediately came up to you to inspect your neck when she saw you.
“Damn girl, you weren’t kidding when you said those were DEEP purple”, she laughed.
“Yeah yeah, come on, let it all out, imma hear all the jokes today anyway”, you rolled your eyes.
Luca walked in behind you carrying two coffees. He handed you yours and he saw the smirk evident on Chris’ face.
“What?”, he asked.
“Jeez man, maybe next time have something to eat first and not eat my best friend”, Chris laughed, attracting the attention of the rest of the team.
They all walked over and took it in turns to look at your neck and instead of making jokes at you, they aimed them at Luca, who by now was a deep shade of red.
You were amused by the whole situation and Luca agreed that maybe next time you should wear the makeup to which you whispered “well maybe, you just need to leave them somewhere nobody else can see”, and with that you kissed his lips and made your way to you desk.
Needless to say that is exactly what Luca did the minute he got you home that night. 😜
Proud Boyfriend
summary: even though you told deacon not to tell anyone, street finds out that you wrote and published a book, meaning the rest of the team quickly finds out as well. when you come to visit deacon at work, you find out that they know, allowing deacon (and the rest of the team) to praise you for all your hard work.
word count: 1.3k
A/N: this was requested by @twilightlover2007, this was so fun to write, i really hope i did the idea justice! enjoy<3
warnings: none, no use of y/n, plus size!reader, fem!reader, race inclusive!reader
After finishing their takedown, Street and Deacon stand at their lockers, packing up their bags to go home. As Street says a quick goodbye to Deacon, he looks down at Deacon’s bag, noticing a book peeking out of it. He smirks, making a quick grab for it, looking over it.
“What’s this, Deac? Didn’t know you were a reader,” he teases as Deacon turns around with wide eyes, noticing what he was holding.
“Nothing. It’s just a book.” Deacon replies, trying to take it back as Street flips the book back over to look at the cover. He raises a brow, looking up at Deacon, a small smile forming on his face.
“Wait, did your girl write this?” Street says in disbelief, as Deacon sighs, shaking his head, a small smile making its way onto his face.
“Yeah, she’s been working on it for a while. Finally got it published. But she didn’t want me to say anything. Said something about it being awkward if anyone hated it, which is ridiculous,” he states. “I read it. It’s amazing,” he adds, nodding his head, his smile growing wider.
Street laughs at your reasoning, shaking his head as he flips the book open, glancing over a few of the pages, Deacon watching proudly as he crosses his arms across his chest, standing taller.
“Look, don’t let her know I told you. And don’t tell anyone else, okay?” Deacon whispers as he hears Hondo, Chris, and Tan’s voices getting closer to the locker room.
“Don’t tell anyone what?” Tan teases, smirking as they walk in, walking up to the two as Deacon grabs the book back, trying to put it in his bag.
Hondo raises his hands in mock surrender, noticing Deacon’s movements as Chris and Tan look over at Street, raising a brow.
Street shrugs, smiling at both of them, shutting his locker. Chris moves into his path to the door, crossing her arms, giving him a look. Street sighs, looking back at Deacon quickly before turning back to Chris.
“Deacon’s girl wrote a book.” he mutters, defeated. Chris scoffs, turning to Deacon, laughing softly.
“Why didn’t you wanna tell us? That’s great!” she says, Tan and Hondo nodding in agreement.
“Yeah, man. I’d be telling everyone I know. I’m kinda surprised you’re not,” Tan tells Deacon, patting him on the back.
“Believe me, if she’d let me, I would tell everyone. She made me promise not to. I’ve seen how hard she worked on it, and you should’ve seen how happy she was when she finished it. I even bought 10 copies when it was published, but I didn’t tell her. I wanna support her, but she’s being really lowkey about it, around people she knows, at least.” he explains, rubbing the back of his neck, smiling softly, finally able to talk about it with someone that will listen to his praise.
“That’s awesome. If I wrote a book, I’d make everyone I know buy a copy.” Tan jokes, opening his locker to grab his bag.
“Who’s writing a book? If it’s an autobiography you better make me look good,” Luca jokes, walking into the room, patting Tan on the back as he walks by.
“Deac’s girl wrote a book,” Street says, crossing his arms over his chest as he turns to Luca.
“What? No way! That’s great, man,” he tells Deacon, wrapping his arms around him for a short hug.
“Yeah, I’m proud of her. She’s always wanted to be a writer. Honestly, I was gonna tell her it was good no matter what, but it’s really well done. I hope she changes her mind so you guys can read it.” Deacon replies, face growing hot, thinking of you.
“Oh, and before we go, I have to show you what we found on our other target. We were able to find his ex-girlfriends address, it looks like that was his old stash house. There’s some stuff we found that forensics wants us to see,” Hondo explains, the team nodding, grabbing their bags before following him to the lab.
As they walk out to the main area of the building, Deacon turns, seeing you walking towards him, a tupperware container in your hand.
“Hey, you said you might have to work late tonight, so I brought you some dinner just in case,” you explain, leaning into his embrace as he wraps an arm around your shoulders, kissing your forehead quickly before you back up.
You’re met with a chorus of hellos from the squad. You smile, waving at them all, saying a quick hi back.
“Hey, I heard about your book, congrats! When do we get to read it?” Luca says, taking a few steps towards you, wrapping you in a tight hug. Your eyes widen as he says this, hugging him back stiffly, giving Deacon a glare over Luca’s shoulder.
Deacon smiles nervously at you, before looking down, fingers moving to pinch the bridge of his nose.
“Sorry, Street saw it in my bag, so he had to tell everyone.” he explains, looking back up at you sheepishly, before glaring at Luca as he lets you go.
“Was I not supposed to say anything? I thought you were excited?” Luca says, a confused expression making its way onto his face, his smile slowly disappearing as he looks between the two of you.
“Yeah, I guess you missed that part of the conversation,” Deacon says to Luca. “I’m sorry, I’m just proud of you, I wish you’d let me tell people,” Deacon says, turning to you. Your eyes soften as you smile softly, your face getting hot.
“He’s right. You should’ve seen his face; he just wants to praise his girl.” Hondo jokes, putting an arm around you, giving you a tight side hug. “If it makes you feel better, we’re proud of you too. We’d love to read it. Someday,” he says, giving you a wink as the rest of the team hums in agreement.
“Yeah. Maybe I’ll let you read it. But don’t expect me to give you a free copy,” you tease, biting the inside of your lip as you fight back a smile.
The team laughs, Street rolling his eyes, teasing you. “Of course. Wouldn’t expect a friends or family discount or anything,” he says, Chris punching his arm, shaking her head, smiling.
You laugh, looking down, feeling your chest swell with pride and excitement. You didn’t know they would want to read your book that bad. You look at Deacon as he smiles at you proudly, arms crossed across his chest, standing tall. He nods his head, a hopeful expression on his face.
“We’re not done with this though. We’re talking about why you had a copy of my book here when you know how Street is,” you tease, pointing a finger at Deacon’s chest as Street scoffs, feigning offense.
Deacon laughs, pulling you into his chest again, hugging you tightly. You put your head on his chest, letting out a long exhale, your smile growing.
“I’m so proud of you, baby.” He whispers in your ear, loud enough for Hondo to hear from beside you.
“We all are. You’ve got yourself a talented woman there, Deac.” he says, looking at Deacon, a smirk on his face.
“I know,” he says, kissing the top of your head, “I know.” he says quieter, loosening his grip on you, looking down at you with his eyes full of admiration.
“Hondo just has to show us something in forensics and then I’ll be ready to go. Do you wanna wait and we can go out and properly celebrate your book?” Deacon asks you. You nod, smiling softly.
“Fine,” you say, faking annoyance, leaning up to kiss him softly. “I’m gonna go say hi to Cortez quickly. Come get me when you’re done.” You tell Deacon, turning to walk to her office as Deacon watches you walk away.
“You did good, Deac.” Tan says, wrapping an arm around his shoulder as they begin walking to the lab.
“Yeah. She doesn’t happen to have a sister or anything, does she?” Street teases, which earns him a shoulder check from Deacon as the rest of the team laughs.
Chapter 2 - Different Shoes
Warnings: Violence, Foul Language, 18+
3.2k+ words
A year ago~
The warmth of the sun on your back makes you groan as you keep your pace, not once letting up on the lead you’ve kept since Sargent Stevens had clicked his stopwatch, signaling for you to start. Now on your last mile of three you pick up your pace, knowing just how much fuel you have left in the tank.
Nothing was going to stop you from reaching that man first and if it meant pushing yourself to the breaking point, then that's what you would do. You even your breathe’s out and focus on putting one foot down after the other, letting your mind take over as you race against the clock and the other recruits just yards behind you.
You round the last corner and give it all you have—there was a reason Street gave you the nickname speedy in high school. Passing the Sargent, you allow yourself to stop and take in a full breath. Laughing, you put your hands on your head and face the Sargent just as the rest of the recruits finish their run. You’re surprisingly happy to find Elijah finishing second, a wide smile on his face as he looks at you.
And he was the one that had questioned you when you suggested running ten miles in the morning.
You pant heavily, inhaling as much air as your lungs allow, and wait for the Sargent to tell you your time. There’s shocked murmurs from the Sargent and a couple of SWAT officers, their eyes wide as they look from you to the pocket watch.
“Well I’ll be damned,” Sargent Stevens mumbles. “Looks like we have a new record here at SWAT gentleman. Officer y/l/n…eighteen minutes and fifty-two seconds…the fastest anyone has ran it.”
Recruits start holloring for joy as they pat you on the back, looks of astonishment written across their faces. You smile as the SWAT officers nod at you in respect and a sense of fulfilment settles over you. You know that you belong, now you just have to prove it in the rest of the categories.
You’re just about to head inside when you notice a car pulling into the car park. The lights flicker as a man opens the door and steps out, and it's as if time itself slows as the sun shines on him.
He was the most beautiful man you had ever seen.
He shuts the door and makes his way towards where you stood at the entrance, his attention wholly fixed on whatever was on his phone. There’s a pair of sunglasses perched across his nose, obstructing your view from what we're no doubt amazing eyes. It’s as he gets closer that you notice how cut and lean he is and it sends a shiver racing down your spine. His tight shirt hugs him perfectly, accenting every ripped muscle. His hair is damn near silver, with darker streaks highlighting it, but it’s the beard and mustache that does it for you. It shapes his face, perfecting every curve and dip, making him even more attractive. You know he’s much older than you, but your heart doesn’t care and it protests as you sidestep and let him through, a mumbled thanks ringing in your ears.
The motivation to get through the next year just hit an all time high thanks to this man.
Present~
You force your eyes to meet his dark ones and the second you do you’re at a total loss for words. How the hell are you supposed to work alongside this specimen of a human?
“Deacon Kay. I don’t think we’ve officially met,” he smiles and you melt at the sight of it. His teeth are perfectly white and the small dimples you can make out just behind his salt and peppered beard threaten to send you to your knees. The amount of times you two had made eye contact from afar was nothing compared to this. His eyes were a deep chocolate and hid emotions you swore you would uncover if it was the last thing you ever did.
Shaking yourself from your thoughts, you take his hand. “Y/n y/l/n, and it’s nice to finally meet you as well…Deacon,” you smile, pushing past the nerves that threaten to topple you. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
A glimmer shines in his eyes and it takes your breath away. “All good things, I hope,” he laughs lowly and the husky sound goes straight to your core.
“Well most of it comes from Luca, so…” you tease and let go of his hand, missing the warmth already. You swore internally at what just one touch from this man could do to you and knew you would be searching for his warmth in everything from now on—that thought scared you.
“Already making me the bad guy, huh?” Deacon groans, but a small smirk etches it way across his face. You clench your jaw as his groan resonates through you and you force no emotions to show on your face as you face Hondo and the rest of the team.
“You know it,” Luca smiles and it calms your racing heart for a fleeting moment.
~~~~
A week later~
You tap Chris’s shoulder twice in confirmation that you’re with her as she yells “give me two”. You round the corner with her and check one side of the room as she checks the other. Trash litters the floor, couches and chairs toppled over in multiple areas.
“Right side clear,” you call, your gun pointed and ready for anything.
“Left side clear,” she calls back before making her way back to you.
You let her lead as you round another corner, but this time you take a shot at a man as he bursts through the closet door, his gun aimed straight at your head. He goes down right as the lights in the complex flicker back on. His groans echo off the walls and you smile as you extend a hand towards him.
Rocker smiles as he takes it, patting you on the shoulder as he reaches his full height. “Damn…gotta say, you’re a damned fast learner y/n,” he chuckles.
“Train with the best, become the best. You should try it sometime,” you wink and he throws his hands up at the obvious dig you threw his way.
“Didn’t know our girl could throw digs like that,” Luca beams as he fists bumps you on the way out of the practice field. “Remind me not to get on your bad side.”
You smirk and take off your helmet before meeting the eyes of the rest of your team members, making a point not to hold Deacon’s gaze for too long. “So how did I do?”
There’s nothing but silence for a couple heartbeats and the longer the seconds tick by the more your insecurities threaten to take over. Hondo breaks it by cracking a smile and then there’s a round of laughter as the team hugs and high fives you. “You should have seen the look on your face,” Hondo chuckles. “Tan about shit himself the first time.”
“I did not,” Tan argues, crossing his arms in defense. “But nothing beats when Street got reprimanded by Mumford.” Laughter fills the air and a sense of comfort takes hold of you.
“I wasn't that bad,” Street rolls his eyes, looking at you as he shakes his head. “Forget about them. They’re nothing but liars.”
You hum. “I’ve known you for enough years to tell when you’re the one lying, Hero,” you wink at Street, using the nickname you made for him back when he refused to use any other nickname besides speedy. A blush creeps up his face as Hondo and Luca laugh in his face at the nickname and you know he’s going to make you regret using it in front of them later, but the sight of his embarrassment is too good for you to care.
You squeeze between Luca and Deacon, conscious of every part of Deacon that brushes up against you. You shiver and head towards the locker room, a proud smile on your face.
The past week has been all about getting you trained with the team—knowing the way they moved and how fluid they entered situations, always planning two steps ahead. You grew up in a military family and had learned more than your average officer, but every situation was different and this team was no different. Hondo was unlike any other leader you had worked under. He made decisions fast and smart, looking at the quickest and safest outcomes. He made sure everyone was on the same page before starting every training session, always making eye contact as he spoke. He made you feel confident with every step you took, because he was.
But it was Deacon, the man who now followed closely behind you and ahead of the group, that made you feel like this was all still surreal. You had trained with every one of your team members, getting to know their decisions and the way they moved, and of course Street had been the easiest to learn, but Deacon? It was as if the two of you had worked together for years.
He made sure you were always right behind him, always in sync with him. His decisions were quick and flawless and you couldn’t help but admire him for it. He was always stern during the training—serious, but more than once you had noted the softer tone he took on when addressing you. A part of you hated that he was being softer on you than the rest just because you were new, but you couldn’t deny the warmth it brought you everytime he did it.
“I have to agree with Rocker. You’re a fast learner,” Deacon says as he catches up with you. “Hondo thinks you’re finally ready for the field, and so do I.”
You look up at him, not stopping your stride, and smile. You tried and failed to keep the butterflies at bay. “I won’t let you guys down,” you reply and break eye contact, hoping he didn’t notice your pupils dilate this close to him or the breathy tone in your voice.
“I know you won’t,” he tells you in that ever reassuring voice of his. He gives you one last look as you enter the locker room before going to both of your respective lockers. Your’s is just on the other side of Chris’s, far enough away from Deacon to get a full breath of air without having to smell his attractive cologne.
You had lost count of the amount of times his cologne had set a fire inside of you that you could not get out of your mind. It was an addiction and you were more than ready to surrender to it.
“So speedy…looks like someone finally gets to join the cool kids,” Street punches your shoulder as he walks past you and to his own locker, a smug smile on his lips. “No more pretending to just be cool.”
You give him a sharp glare, catching Deacon’s clenched jaw just behind Street, but think nothing of it as the rest of the team fills the room. “I don’t remember any mention of your name next to the top spot,” you counter.
The room snickers. “Low blow, y/n,” Hondo laughs. There’s a chaos of beeping that sounds and all of you pull out your phones to check the message. “Robbery in process. Get suited up and meet in the car park.”
Both excitement and nerves run through you as your eyes clash with Street’s and you know he can see every emotion that passes through your eyes. There’s a soft smile that plays on his lips as he takes a couple steps until he’s resting his hands on your shoulders—the weight of his hands grounding you.
“Just like any other job, any other case. You’ve worked a million of them, the only thing different now is that your SWAT”
His words calm the slight fear and you give a short nod, thanking him. Your eyes meet Deacon’s and there’s nothing but calm, steady assurance. You would never get used to seeing those eyes, never wanted to.
“I got your back. We all do,” Street says and your eyes snap to his.
“Then let’s go kick some ass.”
The sirens echo down the street as Black Betty rolls to a hard stop and you jump out after Chris, gun ready. Hondo had received word from Hicks that four shooters were inside with an unknown number of hostages. You stay behind the door as gunshots blast through the windows, hitting the side of the armoured truck and falling to the ground. Hondo yells to stand down, but more shots ring out.
“Chris, Street, and y/n, find a way in, we need eyes in there,” Hondo orders to the three of you. You nod and follow Street and Chris in formation, keeping close their heels as you monitor the alleyway.
“Damn it, it’s locked,” Chris curses, trying the handle. “Blow it.”
Street pulls the charges from his pocket and puts two on the door, standing back as it flashes purple. The hinges burst, sending the door to the floor in a heap of smoke and you follow after them, making sure to keep your steps quiet.
A round of shots ring out and Street curses, his focus wholly on the situation right around on the other side of the wall. “We’re in,” he radios the rest of the team.
You keep your gun trained and follow Street as Chris breaks out and checks the room to her left. There’s light streaming through the door down the hallway and you watch as Street pulls the snake camera from his pack and sneaks it underneath the door.
“Four men and what looks like to be six—no eight hostages,” he radios, keeping his voice low as he looks through the camera on his arm. “Two shooters have their guns pointed at the huddled hostages in the north-west corner. One of the men is drug lord Alajandro Rodruigez.”
You bite your cheek as you think hard, knowing that this situation had to be handled delicately, especially with a man who did not care whether or not bodies were dropped. You can hear Hondo’s voice as he speaks through a microphone, telling the gunmen that the call is for them as a phone rings from somewhere in the room.
“There’s no negotiation here,” Alajandro yells out and you breathe as the gunfire ceases. You lock eyes with Chris and she rolls her neck as she clenches her jaw, reading the dangerous situation just as you are. “I want a way out of here or they all die.”
Screams sound from behind the door and you watch as a man pulls a girl up by the hair, tears streaming down her face as she tries to fight the man. He puts his gun to her temple and her cries only intensify, but you force all emotions down as you focus on the screen on Street’s arm.
“I want a car around back, no cops or she dies,” Alajandro snarls at Hondo through the broken glass at the front, his gun pointed directly at the girl. “You have five minutes.”
“Street, Chris, y/n, fall back to the alleyway,” Deacon radios through and despite the situation, his voice sends shivers down your spine.
Bad timing, really bad timing.
“24-david copy,” Chris replies.
The three of you fall back to the alleyway and you hold back your frustration as you watch from around the corner as the four armed suspects emerge from the door. Their shots ring down the alleyway and you press your back to the next door convenience store so as to not get shot. You take a quick peek in time to see the girl's face and realization washes over you.
You knew you recognized her, but her hair had been different the last time you had gotten a good look at her three years ago.
“Hondo, that’s Amelia Rodriuegez…his cousin. She’s in on it,” you radio, keeping your scope trained on the men as they reach the silver impala.
"You sure? There was no mention of her anywhere on our radar,” he grounds out, his voice stern.
“I’m sure. I worked a case three years ago that involved her and…she’s the brains of the operation, not him,” you spit out, anger tearing through you that you didn’t recognize her sooner.
“She’s right, Hondo,” Hick’s voice comes through. “The DA just informed me she’s been off the grid for the past three years. The case went cold until five days ago when she was spotted with a known associate of hers.”
Rider Mowler, you silently add.
Hondo curses and radios for all units to cut the car off. A smirk fills your face as you run down the alleyway, Street and Chris hot on your heels. Sirens fill the block as multiple cruisers block both ends of the street where the silver impala sits, Black Betty being one of them.
A gun peaks out from the window and you aim, taking the shot before anyone else has the chance to. Blood splashes across the window before the rest of the doors open, and bullets ring out. Street takes down the next suspect that aims his gun out, and you watch as he drops, the life leaving his eyes.
“Come out with your hands out and you don’t have to die like the rest of your crew,” Hondo calls out.
There’s no response and you move your eyes over the hood of the car towards where Hondo and Deacon stand side by side, both of their faces showing anger and years of concentration. “Do it now,” Deacon demands.
Still no answer, but the movement of a gun catches your attention and you watch as Alajandro emerges from the car with his hands held high, dropping the gun to the bloodied street. There’s a sick look in his eyes that makes you nauseous, but it’s the sight of Amelia’s gaze set directly on you as she emerges that truly pushes you over the edge.
“On the ground, Ameila,” you snarl, a cold look in your eye as you march towards the women who cost you countless nights of sleep three years ago.
“Hello, officer y/l/n. Good to see you again,” she gives you a smug smile, showing cracked teeth, but refuses to sink to the ground like her cousin. “Too bad it took the help of SWAT for you to finally catch me. All those poor kids counted on you and yet there was nothing you could do...and by the way, did you like my little performance back there?”
You reach her and slam her hard against the car, forcing her to face the hood. There’s a dark look in your eye as you tighten the cuffs around her until she’s throwing a string of colorful words at you. You push her face harder into the hood and lean down until your mouth is just at her ear and whisper, “I am SWAT, bitch.”

Chris: You know what?
Chris: When I join this friend group I thought you guys would be dealing with my bullshit.

Part 2
Summary: When Jim's mum is out on parole and comes to live with him and (Y/n), she does whatever she can to hurt (Y/n) and come between them. And it puts (Y/n) and her unborn baby at risk.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hm, morning."
A shiver tore down (Y/n)'s spine when she felt an arm loop around her waist and a warm pair of lips attach to the side of her neck. She tilted her head to the left, trying not to move or shudder when the short hairs on Jim's head started to graze against her cheek and caused her nerves to ignite beneath the touch.
Her lips curved into a smile and she paused, her fingers tapping against the counter where she was in the middle of making them each a coffee.
"Morning, want breakfast before you go?" She twisted her head to the right and kissed the top of his head, smiling into his hair when she felt his teeth nipping against her skin.
It was hit and miss whether Jim would have breakfast or not, most of the time he grabbed a protein bar and waited until lunch with the squad at work.
"I'd rather have you." The way his words vibrated into her neck made (Y/n)'s heart flutter and she couldn't help the grin that spread across her lips.
"Oh really?"
(Y/n) forced her hands to work and started pouring the coffee, being mindful not to spill it when she could feel Jim's lips distracting her. And she could feel him smirking into her neck. He knew what effect he had on her and how to turn her to jelly.
She barely had the cups poured before she felt Jim's hands moving down to her stomach. He finally released his head from her neck but only so he could peck the side of her head and stand up straight behind her. (Y/n) tilted her head down, rolling her lips together as she watched his hands move to roll up her top.
"What're you doing?"
"Let me look at you."
She let go of the mugs, biting the inside of her cheek when Jim spun her round so her hips were backed up against the counter and she was facing him. Her hands moved to grip the counter, keeping herself steady as a fond look danced across her face when she looked up at her husband.
"You act like you haven't seen me in weeks." The tender edge to her voice was clear while she danced her fingertips along the back of his neck.
She could see where his eyes were drifting to. He had rolled her shirt up so it rested just beneath her bra, leaving her small bump on show. He was fascinated. Every day he was looking to try and see if he could notice the small changes and to see if he could see her bump growing and changing each day.
Jim's childhood had been far from great. Fighting parents, his dad who abused the both of them and his mum who always struck back until the day she decided to fend him off with a gun. And then foster homes for the next seven years until he could finally live on his own.
He wasn't used to having a family until he worked in Swat, and he wasn't prepared for the amount of love he would receive and feel for (Y/n) when they got together. Having a family was something Jim always wanted, but it was something he had been nervous about.
Jim didn't know how good of a dad he was going to be until that pregnancy test came back positive and he could feel the changes already. He had prime examples of what not to do and he used Deacon as a role model for how he was going to make this work. The love and excitement Jim felt already was enough to show him he was going to be okay at this.
"I wanna look at my girls." He responded with a shrug and a tick of his head that almost made him look boyish.
(Y/n) reached her hands up to cradle the back of his neck and she brought him down for a kiss, soaking up the sound he made when her nails scratched the short hairs at the back of his neck. She could feel his thumbs stroking across her hipbones which made her squirm and shudder in front of him, and when he bit her lip he elicited a gasp that had him smiling against her mouth.
Her hands moved down to his shoulders when he finally released her lips and trailed his way down her neck.
She heard hum murmur 'morning girlie' against her stomach and his hands kept moving back and forth over the sides of her hips. His lips tickled her stomach but the butterflies he elicited beneath his touch had (Y/n) swaying on her feet.
"She should start moving soon." (Y/n) continued to run her hands over Jim's shoulders and the smile that danced over his face made her heart leap in her chest.
She was sure he murmured 'can't wait' against her lips when he leaned up to steal another kiss.
(Y/n) knew anytime now she should start feeling the baby move and kick and she knew once that happened, Jim wouldn't be separated from her stomach. He wanted to be there for everything, he wanted to be at all the scans and feel every movement and he was already thrilled at the thought of when (Y/n) was going to give birth. He didn't want to miss a thing.
"Good morning."
"Morning mum." Jim nuzzled his temple against (Y/n)'s neck so he could just about see his mum as she walked past them in the kitchen. He grinned when he felt (Y/n) squeeze his shoulders and he sighed and tore himself away from her. He gave her hips a lasting squeeze before he grabbed the hem of her shirt and pulled it back down to cover her bump.
"Want some breakfast, Jimmy?"
"No, I'm good. Guess I need to get ready." He pecked (Y/n)'s temple and pressed up close until their abdomens were touching so he could grab the travel cup from behind her that she had filled for him.
He wasn't hungry in the mornings and he wasn't bothered about breakfast, he just had to get ready to go to work.
(Y/n) ran her hand up and down his shoulder, following him with her eyes as he moved near the fridge to kiss his mum's temple before she sat down at the kitchen table.
The look Karen shot (Y/n)'s way made her shiver but she forced herself to smile. She wouldn't let her mother in law get to her, at least not while Jim was home. When he was at work, Karen seemed to unleash her spiteful side. She would make snappy comments at (Y/n), move things, changes the dates on the calendar, she would do anything she could to upset or annoy (Y/n).
But when Jim was home, Karen was the picture of the calm, sweet mother who wanted nothing more than to get along with her son and his wife.
(Y/n) hated it. She hated how rude and spiteful Karen could be, and she hated that Karen was living with them, but what other choice did they have?
She needed to have a place sorted out or else she wouldn't have been released from prison and with Jim's reasoning, (Y/n) didn't feel like she could say no. Karen had guilt tripped Jim just like she always did, she made him feel guilty, she told him that he was the reason she was in prison in the first place. She had shot her husband to protect them both and that was the way Jim had always seem things.
He wanted nothing more than for his mum to be released and they had a spare room, which his mum was always pointing out. They had the space, she wanted to be close to her son and she didn't want to be alone after all those years locked up. There was no way Jim could refuse her without breaking her heart and that was the last thing he wanted to do.
"Oh Jimmy, are you taking me to my interview tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? No, you said it was Friday." Jim leaned around the fridge to catch a look at the calendar on the wall.
His mum had a job, but it a long bus ride to get to and from work so Jim had found a few places closer to home that were willing to hire someone with a record.
"No, it's tomorrow at one. Can you take me sweetie?" Her smile was sincere, but it was the way she glanced over at (Y/n) that had the younger woman pushing back into the counter.
The smile faded from (Y/n)'s lips and she looped her arms over her bump, taking a deep breath to remain calm. She knew what tomorrow was. (Y/n) had her scan tomorrow and Jim had an extended lunch break tomorrow specifically so he could go to the scan with her. Hondo was happy and proud of Jim for being so involved and excited about starting a family and he said they would try and arrange Jim's shifts around (Y/n)'s appointments.
"Mum, we have the scan tomorrow, can't you get the bus?"
Jim tossed the travel mug between his hands and sank his teeth down into his lower lip enough to draw blood. He didn't want to upset his mum or make her panic, but he wanted to be at the scan, he couldn't miss that. And it wasn't a long bus ride to get to the diner in town where her interview was being held.
"Jimmy, you know how nervous interviews make me… it's not the first scan, (Y/n) will be fine without you."
With a deep breath, (Y/n) bypassed Jim and moved to the fridge to get a yoghurt. She wasn't getting involved in this, but she would make sure her silence was clear and disagreeable.
That wasn't fair.
Karen knew (Y/n) hated hospitals. Whenever Jim used to visit his mum in prison, he was forever talking about (Y/n) and their life together, how she made him feel like a better person and helped push him to get into Swat and get on the right track. Jim talked about her a lot and when he told his mum they were having a baby, he had mentioned once or twice that (Y/n) didn't do well with hospitals.
He went to the scans because he was desperate to be involved with his baby but also because he wanted to support (Y/n). He knew she had had bad experiences in hospitals and they made her nervous so he wanted to be at all her appointments to try and make it easier for her.
Jim spared a look over at his wife. He could see how hard she was gripping the fridge so she didn't start to shake and the way her eyes danced around the room gave away her unease which made him sigh.
"I can't take you, but I can pick you up afterwards."
"Oh, okay." The disappointment in Karen's voice was clear and it made (Y/n) feel sick.
Her mother in law wasn't going to make things easy for her now. Whenever Jim was at work and Karen was on a day off, (Y/n)'s day got worse. (Y/n) worked from home which had always been a comfort, right until Karen moved in with them two weeks ago. The first week she had been on her best behaviour, mostly because Jim had been home quite a lot.
Now he was back to his usual work pattern, (Y/n) was left alone with Karen who was becoming spiteful and insufferable.
"I gotta go, I'll see you both tonight."
(Y/n)'s chest fluttered when Jim held her chin between his finger and thumb so he could tilt her head up in his direction. His lips quirked up to one side and he brushed his thumb along her chin before he captured her in a quick but searing kiss.
"Love you," He spoke into her mouth, pulling her lower lip between his teeth before he was turning away and heading down the hall to grab his things.
The moment the front door closed, (Y/n) pulled her arms into her sides like she wanted to wear a suit of armour for protection. Her eyes followed Karen as she got up, lips pursed, nose crinkled and shoulders squared like she was getting ready for a fight.
Part of (Y/n) had thought in the beginning that Karen would be happy about having a grandchild. She thought Karen would be pleased for Jim because he was happy and settled. It didn't dawn on (Y/n) that Karen would become jealous. She was no longer the only person in Jim's life. Karen had been replaced. She couldn't have Jim all to herself, he was no longer the little boy she had left when she got taken to prison.
She had missed out on almost two decades of his life and as much as (Y/n) could sympathise, she couldn't condone Karen trying to keep Jim to herself and control him like she was.
"I guess you got what you wanted then."
Her harsh words made (Y/n) flinch and sigh. She didn't know whether to reach out for her mother in law or stay huddled up near the counter.
"Karen, I-"
"No, I get it. You think because you're having a baby that you've got him wrapped around your finger. Well you don't."
Both (Y/n)'s arms pressed into her stomach and she swallowed a gasp when Karen roughly barged her shoulder into (Y/n)'s chest on her way past her.
Why did she have to be like that? Why did she have to be so crude and snarky and possessive over Jim? (Y/n) always thought when she got married that she would have a great relationship with her in-laws. And when Jim told her about his mum, (Y/n) wanted to get to know her. She wanted to know the woman who had gone to prison to protect him, but that wasn't the same woman who was walking away from her right now.
This woman was bitter and manipulative, and maybe that was because she had to toughen up when she went to prison. Maybe she really did kill her husband to protect Jim, but she was using that as an excuse to control Jim and his life and worm everything to her advantage. And she knew (Y/n) wouldn't stand for it, which made (Y/n) an obstacle in her path.
God, (Y/n) hoped the worst Karen would do would just be to spit insults at her. She could endure this for a few more weeks, it wouldn't be for long.
Jim had agreed that his mum could stay with them for a few months, but she had to go when they had the baby, preferably just before they had the baby. The house was going to be lively when they had their daughter and they would be busy.
(Y/n) couldn't be looking after her baby and dealing with Karen and her vindictive nature. And she and Jim wanted to be a family and have their home to themselves when they had the baby.
Just a little while longer, and then Karen would be living on her own.
***
"Karen?" (Y/n) rapped her knuckles on the door and gingerly leaned around to peek into the spare room. Her hands stayed clinging to the door and she bit down on her lip, trying to pluck up as much courage as she had within her to both have this conversation and stay calm.
"Yeah?" The older woman looked less than interested in a conversation with her daughter in law.
She rose a brow and nudged her glasses further up her nose while she twisted on the bed so she was looking in (Y/n)'s direction.
"Have you seen my notebook? The blue one, I use for work?"
The flicker that danced over Karen's eyes and had her lips twitching made (Y/n) press further into the door. She knew it. She felt so stupid for even asking when she knew deep down that her book wasn't anywhere to be found, because of her mother in law.
(Y/n) worked from home, she kept all of her notes in two separate notepads which were always either in her and Jim's bedroom or tucked under her arm. (Y/n) needed her blue notebook with the sparrows drawn on the cover, it was all her dates and details and facts that she had to type up and send across to her boss this week.
The last time she saw her notebook was yesterday when she had been writing in the living room. Now the book was gone, and (Y/n) knew exactly who had moved it. Jim had been at work all day yesterday and he had gone again this morning. There was no way he would of moved it when he came home and went straight for a shower before climbing into bed. He didn't go in the living room.
"No, I don't think so. Why, is it important?"
She knew it was. Karen knew it was important, if (Y/n) didn't have those notes she would have to start from scratch and it would delay her and cause her to be reprimanded by her boss.
"It- it's my work, I need that book." Her voice was unusually quiet and she could feel defeat clawing at her throat.
"Oh, well I haven't seen it."
Nodding, (Y/n) turned on her heels and walked down the hall. She wasn't standing here arguing. She was going to search the house from top to bottom and if that made her look like an idiot or stressed her out then so be it, because she needed that notepad.
The living room had already been searched. (Y/n) had moved every book and magazine, looked beneath the sofa and the cushions and the bookcase. She looked everywhere she could think of.
She made her way into the kitchen and scanned over the few papers on the table, again. She looked in the little wooden crate on the windowsil that was for important letters and bills. She looked in the messy drawer and the cupboards.
Sweat rolled down the back of her neck and adrenaline sparked in her stomach that was churning and rotating awfully. She felt like she was going to be sick. What was she going to do if she couldn't find her notes? She was going to have to work late into the night to redo everything. (Y/n) would have to rewrite her notes and then type up her essay and her notes and then she would have to edit and make sure everything was ready to send off.
Grabbing a few wrappers from the counter, (Y/n) scrunched them up in her hands and started to tidy up. She may as well tidy the house as she tore it apart looking for what she needed, something (Y/n) wasn't so sure she was going to find.
She flicked open the bin, about to toss a few bits in until something caught her eye.
A sparrow.
A flash of blue.
(Y/n) leaned down, dragging her fingers through the bin with a wince, trying not to touch last night's dinner or the cereal from this morning.
She choked on a sob that had her lips curdling like sour milk when her fingers curled around her notepad and she wrenched it out of the bin.
The book was lathered in sauce from last night. Splotches of milk painted the cover and the pages were crinkled, cracking and sticking together.
(Y/n) couldn't stop the tears falling down her face or the way her chest shuddered and jumped when she looked through the pages. All her work. All those hours, those notes, the tentative, neat handwriting. Stained. Destroyed. Ruined.
Karen had put her work in the bin. She had dumped it in the bin and threw the leftovers on top to try and hide it and keep (Y/n) from realising where all her hard work had gone.
Why did she have to do this?
"Hey baby, what're you doing?" Jim leaned against the doorway to the nursery, glancing his eyes around the room. The walls were still pale magnolia from when they bought the place and moved in last year. They hadn't decided what colour to paint the nursery yet, all they knew was that they didn't want this pale, bland colour when the baby was born.
(Y/n) was five and a half months along now so anytime soon, Jim would get ready to paint the nursery and he would start setting up the crib and units soon too.
His arms folded over his chest and his head leaned against the door while he looked down at his wife.
She was knelt on the floor, a few onesies and bibs and little trinkets surrounding her.
A fond look swarmed through Jim's eyes, right until his wife turned around. The smile faded from his lips and the warmth in his eyes turned ice cold the moment he noticed the tears streaking down (Y/n)'s face. Her eyes were overwhelmed with tears, the colours blurring together and meshing around her pupils that were as wide as saucers.
He noticed the puffy look beneath her eyes and the way her lower lip kept wobbling as she tried to draw in a proper breath.
"Hey, hey what's the matter?"
He moved before he could stop himself and he slumped down to his knees beside her, trying not to kneel on any of the clothes scattered around. What had happened while he had been at work? They had been to their scan last week and everything had been fine with the baby, so he hoped she wasn't upset or panicking about the baby.
He reached out for her hands and gently pulled them onto his lap, smoothing his thumbs over the back of her hands while he waited for her to explain so he could help.
"I'm not doing this anymore Jim." (Y/n) pulled her hands away from his touch so she could run her fingertips up and down her face. It didn't matter how many times she tried to swipe away the tears, more drenched her face and had her breath bubbling and catching in her throat.
"What, doing what? Baby what's happened?" He tried to reach out for her again but (Y/n) moved faster.
"Look."
Something twinged in (Y/n)'s chest like her heart had physically been slashed when she looked across the floor. She scrunched up the blanket in her hands and roughly tossed it at Jim, sending him leaning backwards when it hit him in the chest.
Jim's stomach pulled inwards and his lips parted when he looked down at the blanket.
It was the one (Y/n)'s grandma had knitted when she was little. The blanket was a worn shade of white with a deep blue ribbon stitched around the edging. (Y/n) had had this since she was little and she had started adding a few flowers and embroidery stitches to update it ready for when she had her baby to pass it onto.
It was ruined.
The bottom corner had either been cut or pulled and the wool was unspooling. Half the blanket had been pulled so the woven stitches were undone, leaving a tangled mess of wool attached to what was left of the blanket.
"What happened?" Jim swallowed harshly as he held up the blanket and looked it over.
It would take a skilled knitter to fix this and even if someone could fix the blanket, there would be telltale signs and stitches that showed it had been wrecked and patched back together.
This was important to (Y/n). She didn't have a lot to remember her grandma by and their baby would never know her. (Y/n) wanted to give their child something that would remind them of someone they would never know, and now it was damaged, possibly beyond repair. "I- I found it in the drawer like this."
"Maybe… maybe it got caught in the drawer-"
"It's been cut! She's cut it. Jim, you- you know what this meant to me." (Y/n) swallowed harshly, wiping her hand beneath her eyes as she took the blanket back from Jim.
She wanted to throw it across the room, unravel it completely and toss it in the bin, but she couldn't. Her touch was unnaturally gentle as she folded what was left of the blanket and ravelled the loose wool around the blanket to stop it from unravelling further.
"And where's the stuff I bought?" (Y/n) motioned around to the clothing she had set out on the floor around them and Jim took a moment to look at it all.
There was the onesies Jim had picked out. A few items Deacon had given them last week when he and Annie went through their old baby clothes they didn't need for their girls anymore. And a few things from the others at Swat who had either donated their kids old things or like Chris, had gotten a few things to surprise Jim with.
But nothing (Y/n) had bought was here.
The few teddies she had picked out. The jumpsuits and mini dresses and tights she couldn't resist from town. The bibs and socks and little things to stock up on, everything (Y/n) bought, wasn't here.
"I- I don't know, maybe I tidied them in the chest of drawers-"
"Jim, everything I got is gone. The stuff you bought, that's all here. The things Deacon donated to us, that's here. Can't you see what she's doing to me?"
Jim ran his hand up and down his face, trying to take a deep breath but he found he could barely breathe at all.
This wasn't right. This couldn't be happening. It was just a mistake.
There was no way his mum would be this spiteful and vindictive. She wouldn't toss away the things that were bought for her first- and only- grandchild. She wouldn't cut up something so important to (Y/n) and unravel it like this to hurt her. She wouldn't wreck and mess with everything to wind (Y/n) up, Karen wasn't like that.
She was his mum. She loved him, she did everything for him, she had spent years in prison because and for Jim and now she was out. She wouldn't do anything to jeopardise what she and Jim and (Y/n) had here.
"No, mum wouldn't do this."
"No, no Jimmy I'm not doing this anymore, okay? You go to work but I work from home, I'm the one dealing with your mum's tantrums and her fits of rage. She doesn't like me, she scares me Jimmy and now she's doing this to me. What if it gets worse?"
(Y/n) couldn't do this anymore.
She had spent a month living with Karen and it was too long, too frightening. She had gone too far. First she had been rude when Jim's back was turned, then she started being horrid whenever she passed (Y/n). She had thrown (Y/n)'s notebook in the bin.
Karen watched as (Y/n) screamed and cried and sat on the living room floor for hours rewriting her notes and trying to salvage what she could from her notepad. Now Karen had gone as far as to throw things away that were for their baby, and she had destroyed something that was so important to (Y/n).
This couldn't keep happening. (Y/n) couldn't carry on like this, she wasn't staying home when Karen was here. She wasn't going to keep living like this with a cruel mother in law who was out to upset her.
(Y/n) was pregnant, she couldn't be stressed and panicked and she couldn't stay with Karen when she her temper was flaring. What if Karen lashed out at her? What if she went from verbally aggressive to being physical? What would (Y/n) do then?
"I'll talk to her."
With a broken smile and a shake of her head, (Y/n) moved her hand to Jim's shoulder and got up from their position kneeling on the floor.
"Thanks." The sarcasm dripping from her tone made Jim shiver and his expression dropped completely. He watched her leave the room, doing her level best to control her breathing and calm herself down before she made herself sick.
Part of (Y/n) didn't expect Jim to go and talk to his mum straight away. She thought he would take a few minutes to calm down, maybe look around the nursery and try to prove (Y/n) wrong and find all the clothes she couldn't find. But she heard him storm out of the nursery and when she looked over her shoulder, he was aiming for the spare room where his mum was since she wasn't at work today.
(Y/n) couldn't help herself.
She took a few seconds to calm herself down and clear the tears from her face before she backtracked and shuffled along the hall. She stayed close to the wall and a few feet away from the door. She didn't want to watch, but she wanted to know what Karen would try to say to defend herself.
She wished she hadn't listened.
Jim seemed to start off strong. He walked in there with the intention of telling his mum that whatever went on while he was at work needed to stop. But Karen's words were like a knife cutting right through (Y/n)'s stomach. She moved both hands down to cradle her stomach as she coiled in on herself.
"Jimmy she's pregnant, all those hormone changes and she's always so temperamental these days. She doesn't want me here, this is her way to get rid of me but I don't wanna leave you, baby. I'm finally out, finally able to be with my little boy again."
"I know, mum. I just… I need you both to get along, you're both my family and this is upsetting (Y/n). Try and be nice to her-"
"She needs to accept that I'm staying. We're meant to be together after all the lost time, Jimmy. (Y/n)'s just emotional."
"I guess."
Moving her hand to her mouth, (Y/n) swallowed down whatever cry was desperate to claw at her throat. She wasn't doing this anymore.
If Jim couldn't have her back and stand up for her, then she wasn't going to stay here. She didn't feel safe in her own home and that wasn't fair. (Y/n) had a right to feel safe where she lived and right now she didn't. She didn't want Karen living with them in the first place, but she didn't really have a choice.
If he wasn't going to help her and Karen was going to target her, then (Y/n) wasn't staying here with them.
Karen could have what she wanted. She could have Jim to herself until he worked out what he wanted to do and who he wanted to prioritise.
They were both his family but Jim was picking Karen over (Y/n), he was believing her over his wife and (Y/n) couldn't stay and be victimised any longer.
Staying wasn't an option.
***
"She doesn't wanna talk to you."
"Chris please. Five minutes, please?"
The pleading look in Jim's eyes won Chris over, although she still looked disappointed and angry.
Her lips rolled together, her eyes narrowed and she placed her hand on her hip before slowly opening the front door to let him inside. She didn't want to let him in, but he was here, again, and he was begging her. He had called and called (Y/n) and Chris but neither of them answered and this was the fifth day and he thought he was going to go insane.
He hadn't seen his wife in five days, that was almost a week. The longest he had gone without her was three days when Swat had been low on staff and everyone had been on a big assignment. This was different.
This was (Y/n) staying with Chris because she didn't feel safe in her own home and Jim wanted to do whatever he could to change that. He wanted his wife home where she belonged, not here with her best friend to get away from him.
Jim squeezed Chris's shoulder and bypassed her to get into the living room where he could see his wife.
He bounded up to her before she got the chance to see who it was and before (Y/n) could try and get up, Jim was already plonked down on the sofa next to her. He reached out and clamped his hand down on her wrist, his touch comforting but desperate at the same time as he leaned forward until there was barely an inch of space between them.
His knees bumped into (Y/n)'s thigh and he was close enough that (Y/n) could feel each rapid breath fanning against her cheek.
She didn't want to look at him. She didn't want to turn and see those puppy dog eyes that could win him whatever he wanted. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction. But when Jim tilted his head down and attached his lips to her shoulder, (Y/n) shivered.
She felt his hand let go of her wrist and slide round to cradle her lower back and when his other hand moved to squeeze her thigh, (Y/n) finally looked down at him. He was glued up against her side, his chest pressing into her arm, his fingers twitching against her skin like he feared she was a figment of his imagination and would fade away any moment.
"Baby…"
"Why're you here?" (Y/n) couldn't hide the pain from her voice and she couldn't stop her eyes from welling up with tears when Jim flinched against her. He squeezed her thigh tighter, shifting his hand up higher, testing the waters to see if she would throw away his touch or not.
"You shouldn't be here, you should be at home-"
"Not while she's there." (Y/n) didn't want to stay with Chris, she didn't want to impose on her friend, but Chris had more than welcomed her to stay.
She was the one who told (Y/n) she couldn't go home until Jim realised just what his mother was doing. The whole team knew how crazed Karen was becoming and they understood that (Y/n) was being targeted, she wasn't losing her mind or imagining anything or overreacting. Chris told (Y/n) to stay with her as long as she needed until things settled down and Karen was sorted out.
"Baby, come home. I've talked to mum, properly, I swear, it's sorted now."
(Y/n) wanted to believe him, she really did. She wanted to let herself sink into his touch and the way his lips were feathering across her neck, feeling her in without having to do much at all. But if Jim was just saying this to get her to come home, (Y/n) couldn't do that. She had to know that he was taking her seriously and he would listen if anything else happened.
"You didn't listen to me, Jim. She called me hormonal, and you agreed." Tears welled up in her eyes as she gripped his chin and tilted his head away from her neck so they were face to face. "I can't come home if you won't take me seriously."
"I'm looking at flats."
"What?"
His words sent shivers running up and down (Y/n)'s spine and she couldn't help but lean away from him. What on Earth did that mean? Was he truly believing his mum over her? Was this it? Had Karen well and truly got in the way of their marriage like she strived to do?
"Mum staying with us was- is, temporary. I'm trying to find her a place of her own, somewhere nearby. Then she's still close to home, but we have our own space again, just you, me and our girl."
His mum living with them had never been a permanent thing. Jim only agreed because his mum needed a place secured or else they wouldn't approve her for parole. She had to have that security and Jim couldn't let her rot inside a day longer. But he had always had the intention of helping his mum find her own place.
It wasn't healthy for her to be living with them and be so attached to Jim and he and (Y/n) needed their own space now they were extending their family. He was trying to get his mum a place of her own as soon as he could so they could all have a better, healthier relationship together.
When he shifted his hand up from (Y/n)'s thigh to trace her bump, (Y/n) couldn't help the tear that slid down her face.
He could feel her resolve melting away when he started to trace designs across her stomach with his fingertip.
Five days had started to feel like five weeks away from (Y/n) and all the team knew something had been up. Chris was the only one who knew the details, but all of them saw how tightly strung up Jim had been. He felt like he had been having withdrawel symptoms when he came home to an empty bed and he couldn't have his arms around (Y/n) or his hand on her stomach.
"Come home." Jim didn't take his hand away from her stomach, but the way his nose twitched and his lips drew to one side told (Y/n) he was one minute away from crying.
She saw a tear slither down his cheek when she nodded and that was all Jim needed to practically push her back into the sofa and steal a starved kiss from her.
She could feel his teeth grazing her lower lip and the way he smiled into the kiss as he took all the breath from her lungs, leaving her starving and lightheaded. He wanted both his girls to come home, he missed them more than any words could say and he wouldn't let this happen again.
He would listen next time.
***
A quiet, lulling hum filled the nursery as (Y/n) moved towards the window. She could faintly hear the music channel playing on the tv downstairs and it was loud enough for her to know what song was playing and to hum along to the music.
Her head ticked from side to side as she looked up at the window frame with pursed lips and narrowed eyes.
They had decided on a pale shade of lilac for the nursery with a bleached white ceiling. The colour looked beautiful and when the sunlight hit the walls just right, (Y/n) could almost see sparkles twinkling off the walls. They had finished the second coat over the weekend while Jim was off and now (Y/n) was just adding a few more details.
They still had another three and a bit months left until their girl would be here, but Deacon had told them it was better to plan ahead and be prepared. According to him, the last few months would go by in a flash and they didn't want to be rushing about trying to sort everything at the last minute.
Grabbing the chair from the corner of the room, (Y/n) dragged it across and took her time climbing up.
Her fingers scrunched around the dusty white curtains that had a mixture of burnt orange, beige and bright pink flowers painted across them. She unclipped one end of the curtain pole and started feeding the curtain rings on.
Once these were up, the only things left to do in the nursery was to put up some shelves, assemble the crib and sort the changing table. Then they would be well and truly prepared.
"What have you said to Jimmy?"
A gasp tumbled past (Y/n)'s lips and she wobbled, quickly regaining her balance before she toppled off the chair.
She fed the last ring onto the pole before she glanced behind her over her shoulder.
Karen didn't look happy.
The elder woman stormed into the nursery she had barely looked at since they started decorating it. If (Y/n) had thought before that Karen wasn't interested in her grandchild, she well and truly understood now. She could see the way it started to gnaw at Jim when they had been getting things ready and Karen could barely manage a smile. Whereas everyone down at Swat was more than delighted and listened intently if Jim ever talked about the baby.
"Excuse me?" (Y/n) took a deep breath to steady herself for the upcoming argument and she pressed her hand to the wall to climb down off the chair.
She had no idea what Karen was going on about and she was sure whatever it was, Karen was blowing it out of proportion. But she just had to do this now, when Jimmy was still at work. He would be coming home around about now, why couldn't she just wait until he got back so they didn't have to argue any more?
She had promised Jim she wouldn't argue or upset (Y/n) or fight with her. (Y/n) knew she wouldn't stick to it.
"He's looking at flats. He's trying to find a flat for me, he wants me to move out before the baby comes. What have you said to him? Why are you trying to get rid of me, he's my son I've sacrificed everything for Jimmy so I can be with him now. Why do you have to get in the way?"
"Karen calm down-"
"Calm down? When you're taking my son from me?!"
(Y/n) coiled her arms to her chest and took a strangled breath when Karen grabbed the nearest object and threw it her way. Thank God it happened to be one of the teddies Chris had given them, but seeing what she had thrown only riled Karen up even more.
She reached out for one of the coat hangers on top of the chest of drawers and launched it so hard and fast (Y/n) barely had time to move.
She bit back a scream when the plastic hanger collided with the edge of the windowsil and snapped on impact.
What the Hell was she doing?
"He's my husband, I'm not taking him from you. But you… you can't think that it's normal to live with us forever? We're having a baby, things are gonna change." (Y/n) held her hands out in front of her as if trying to act peaceful as going to make a difference when her mother in law was on the warpath.
"You little hustler. You're turning my son against me and I won't have it." Karen's voice heightened until she was at the point of screaming and (Y/n) winced at her pitch and tone.
She sidestepped and slumped into the wall when Karen tossed a paintbrush her way and when she threw the paint tray to the floor, (Y/n) cowered back.
She was aiming things at her. If Karen got hold of the screwdriver set or something heavy, she could aim it just right and cause (Y/n) some real damage.
"You and that bloody baby are destroying him."
Would Karen go as far as to hurt the baby? (Y/n)'s hand moved down to her stomach at the thought and she winced, feeling the baby give out a strong kick. She had no idea if Karen would try and come over to hit her or push or slap her or toss something directly at her, but she didn't want to find out.
She was scared. Karen had killed her husband. She had been so riled up and defensive over Jim, wanting to protect him that she had shot her husband in cold blood. Of course she had her reasons, she was a battered wife protecting her only son. But now, Karen was thinking of (Y/n) and the baby as a threat. A threat to Jim.
(Y/n) needed Jim to come home. She needed to go get her phone and call him to find out if he was on his way home or not. She couldn't stay here and argue with Karen who was only getting angrier by the second. Being here with her wasn't safe for (Y/n) or her unborn baby.
"You need to stop."
She kept one hand on her stomach and held the other out towards Karen, both to try and calm her down and to keep a good distance between them both.
Pushing forward, (Y/n) quickened her steps in haste and cowered down when Karen screamed. She bolted past her, giving Karen a nudge to get her out of the doorway so (Y/n) could fly past her.
Her phone was downstairs. She had to call someone. She had to get hold of Jim or Chris or even Hondo at this point, just someone that would help and not think she was overreacting or being silly. She had to keep as much distance between her and Karen as possible.
"Where are you going? You can't do this to me and Jimmy, he's my son! You hear me, he's mine."
(Y/n) couldn't help the scream that slipped past her lips when she felt a hand smashing against her shoulder. She wasn't sure whether Karen tried to punch her or grab at her, but either way it threw her off balance and had her falling into the wall that stopped her from going down on her knees.
She flung her arm out behind her, managing to scratch her nails along Karen's arm and push her back. She had to get away from her. She had to get downstairs and either get her phone or get out the house. Karen was trying to attack her.
"Get the Hell away from me!"
"Does your girl know you've invited us all round?" A wide grin spread across Luca's face as he leaned forward and grabbed Jim by the shoulders, giving him a little shake.
He pushed down on Jim, nudging the shorter man forward while Luca practically jumped up and down behind him like an excited child. It had been a while since the whole team gathered together to hang out after work, and this was the first time they would see Jim's new home.
Luca had spent almost five months living with Jim and (Y/n) two years ago in their old apartment. They had been gracious enough to put up with him for that long and let him stay and he had loved being around two of his closest friends.
"Nope, she wants to see you all though." Jim fished his keys out his pocket while Luca continued to shake him back and forth.
He could hear Chris laughing somewhere behind them and Hondo and Deacon were close by.
They had all agreed to come over for a few drinks, and Hondo and Deacon were more than willing to help Jim set up the crib he had been having trouble with over the weekend. They knew what they were doing, Hondo was good at fixing things and Deacon had four kids, he had done this before. Luca was the only one who wouldn't be so good with sorting out the furniture so he would stick to sorting the music. Chris knew what she was doing, but she was here to see (Y/n) more than to do any DIY.
"Course she does, she's missed us." Hondo grinned and shimmied his back pack higher on his shoulder as Jim finally reached the front door. They watched him make a big effort to wave his hands in front of the house, showing off with a cheesy grin before he unlocked the door.
Jim had never heard a scream quite like the one that hit his ears when he walked over the threshold.
It was so perfectly timed to when he walked inside that he thought for a moment that someone was playing some sort of prank on him. Like he had stepped on a trip wire and a fake scream sounded through a megaphone.
But he knew it was real.
He knew that scream was real, and he knew exactly who it belonged to.
The clouting thud that followed had Jim shivering and backing into Luca who in turn took a step back over the threshold. None of them knew what they had walked into. Had they interrupted a break in? Had some sort of accident happened? Had they done something by walking in at this exact time?
"No!"
"Oh Jesus- someone call 911!" Luca flapped an arm behind him, hitting any of his team that he could to make them listen while his other hand fisted Jim's shirt as if to make sure he hadn't vanished or fallen down with shock.
Jim bolted forward, feeling the team close behind him but he didn't care. He wrenched out of Luca's grip and took double strides until he was five paces up the stairs.
(Y/n) had fallen.
His left arm bashed into the bannister while his right knee bent out and punctured into the wall, wedging himself in place on the stairs so he could find his balance without falling down.
His hands were quick to find her neck, his thumbs smoothing over her jaw as he tried to be as gentle as he could to tilt her head away from the bannister. Her temple had been pressing down on the wooden beam until Jim turned her so she was facing him.
"Baby? Baby, oh come on, open your eyes for me." Words flurried past his lips before he could realise what he was saying.
His fingers pressed down into her neck and he winced, hoping he wasn't hurting her when he realised the grip he had but he couldn't let go. His whole body was shaking as he looked over his wife.
She was laid in the middle of the stairs, crumpled at an odd angle. Arms bent and stuck near her waist, legs curled awkwardly with one foot pressed against the opposite wall and the other hanging off a lower step. But she wasn't moving. She wasn't opening her eyes like Jim was telling her to. She wasn't even moving her head or acknowledging him.
"She's not waking up." Panic entwined in with Jim's words and he glanced over his shoulder, tears already streaming down his face as he begged any of his team to help him. To do something to make this better, to help his wife.
But when Jim glanced up, he wished he hadn't. He wished he never bothered lifting his head because the sight he was faced with made his stomach churn and had him gagging.
Karen.
His mum. Stood at the top of the stairs, one hand stretched out for the bannister to stabilise herself while her other hand was pressed against her mouth to cover her shock. She had tears streaming down her face and Jim realised she was shaking her head like she was trying to tell him she didn't do this. She hadn't wanted any of this to happen. But the guilt was written across her face.
The look in her watering eyes, the shock that was making her tremble back and forth like a lead. The way she was backing away from the stairs with little gasps and croaks.
She had pushed her.
When Jim heard Hondo's voice, it sounded faint and distant like his leader was calling from across the street instead of the bottom of the stairs.
Hondo's hand found Jim's shoulder and he quickly and expertly climbed over Jim and (Y/n), stepping over the entwined couple on the stairs with Luca hot on his heels. The pair of them bolted up the stairs towards Karen, both so they could stop her from trying to wander away and restrain her in case she tried to lash out at any of them.
"Do something." Jim's voice was oddly low but the desperation was clear. He spat the words with venom and he leaned into Deacon until the older man could see the fright blowing up his brown orbs.
Deacon rested his hand on Jim's shoulder and knelt beside him, leaning around to try and reach out for (Y/n). He pressed his hand to her neck to check her pulse before he gently peeled back her eyelid, but her eyes had rolled to the back of her head. Only allowing them to see the whites of her eyes with prominent veins crawling across them.
"Chris we need that ambulance." He glanced at the bottom of the stairs towards Chris. She had one hand tangled in her hair, a determined look on her face and tears in her eyes. Deacon couldn't remember the last time he'd seen Chris cry. "We can't leave her here like this, we need to get her down in the recovery position. Okay?"
He didn't want to wait for an ambulance with (Y/n) in this position, she was crumpled up like a piece of paper. It was going to hurt and if she had any internal injuries, lying like this was going to make them worse.
Deacon moved to try and hold her legs but Jim was moving off a different schedule.
He was already easing (Y/n)'s head onto his shoulder and curving her arms around her waist to keep them out the way so he could lift her up. Biting his lip, Deacon helped ease (Y/n)'s legs over Jim's arm and kept a hand on Jim's back to support him standing up on the stairs.
They walked backwards, slowly easing down the stairs until they were safely in the hallway and Deacon held the back of (Y/n)'s head and her waist to help lower her down.
"Airways are clear and open, breathing is good. Pulse is high… I can't tell if she's broken anything." Deacon tilted (Y/n)'s head down just in case she got a nosebleed or she started to throw up.
He tried to check her over but he couldn't see any obvious breaks or feel any dislocations. That didn't mean her ribs weren't broken or that she didn't have any internal injuries. They needed the paramedics here. Now.
"Two minutes," Chris gripped Jim's shoulder and gave him a little shake. She had dispatch on the line. They were already relocating an ambulance and a squad car down to them. This was an emergency and they would have help soon. Chris would ring Captain Cortez and tell her the situation, they would get hold of Karen's parole officer and sort this out for Jim so he could go with (Y/n).
"What have I done?"
"Street, you couldn't-"
"S-she told me. She told me she wasn't safe here, and I- I didn't- I never… God, what have I done?"
She told him she didn't feel safe with his mum. She told him everything his mum had done and he didn't believe her. He wanted to see the best in his mum, he wanted the family he hadn't had since he was eleven. He wanted a proper, loving, caring mum in his life, not one that sent him letters from behind a secured facility. He wanted his mum to get along with his wife and be involved in her granddaughter's life.
This wasn't how it was supposed to work. This wasn't the family Jim had tried to build. He hadn't kept his family safe. He hadn't listened to (Y/n) and now both his girls were in danger.
Why didn't he listen?
“I don’t think Y/n’s hearing aids are working that well.” Deacon said being worried.
“What makes you think they are not working?” Hondo asked.
“Cuz sometimes after we ask them for something, they act like it was the first time I ask them that.”
They were both heading to you to see if you got any new info on the case. As they made their way they could hear the rest of the team arguing, Tan and Luca vs Street while you just stood there looking at them with dead eyes then turned to the Ipad in your hand.
“I honestly think that would be a waste of time and they could get away before we close in on them.” Street defended.
“Hey hey hey what’s going on in here?” Hondo asked.
“Just deciding on our new approach.” Tan replied.
“So what we got so far?” Deacon asked.
They all turned to look at you, your eyes were still locked on the Ipad in your hand, having no idea what’s going on around you. They waited for a whole minute just in case you were pulling on the files.
“Y/n?” Hondo called you.
He called you again but still no respond. Deacon shared a look with Hondo. Street touched your arm and that’s when you turned your head to look at him and noticed the whole team was already looking at you.
You smiled then put your hand behind your ear and turn on your hearing aid “What?”
They all looked shocked at you.
“Did you turn off your hearing aid?” Tan asked.
You nodded. Jim chuckled because he knows this, you did this all the time at home.
“Why?” it was Luca’s turn.
“Oh” you let out a small laugh “Whenever I know there’s going to be some dumb argument, I just turn it off so the stupidness doesn’t affect me.”
“Yeah, that explains so much.” Deacon commented.
A/n: This was requested by an anonymous. I've actually had this idea in mind for weeks I just didn't know for who to write it. Thank you!
Unexpected (Part 2)
Rating: 18+ MINORS DNI
Warnings: mentions of sex, pregnancy, nausea, vomiting, medical issues.
Once things settled down and the hostages were rescued safely with only minor injuries and mental anguish, Hondo decided it was time to pull Luca. The team could finish up without him, it would be alright. Luca was working with Tan and Street. Hondo sighed, getting himself together. The adrenaline was still rushing through all of their veins. He walked over to the group.
“Luca, can we talk for a minute?”
The color drained from Luca’s face, his classic smile fading from his lips. Hondo noticed him swallow hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Yeah, boss. What’s up?”
Deep down inside, every bad scenario was running through Luca’s head. Was it you? Was it his parents?
Hondo’s eyes panned over to Tan and Street before they panned back to Luca. Everyone was wearing a worried look.
“It’s Y/N. Annie was on her way to the hospital with her. She passed out at home. I was waiting until things calmed down to pull you out as soon as I could.”
Luca’s blue eyes instantly filled with concern before he shook his head, attempting to pass by Hondo. “I gotta get out of here, man. Like now.”
“Listen, listen—I know, Luca.”, Hondo grabbed his shoulders, trying to center him.
Luca was fighting back tears—he couldn’t show his emotions. That’s not how this worked. He was taught to be tough—even as a child.
“Just be safe about it, man. She needs you.”, Hondo eyed Luca.
Luca couldn’t meet Hondo’s eyes. He only stared past him, however, Hondo could see the tears pooling in Luca’s deep blue eyes. He hated breaking bad news to his teammates. It seemed like only yesterday when Annie had her stroke and he had to tell Deacon. It was the worst part of being the team leader.
“I know.”, Luca breathed, voice barely above a whisper.
He rubbed his hand over his face. “What happened to her?”
Hondo shook his head. “Captain Cortez didn’t give me any other details.”
“I gotta get down there. I need to see her.”
“I know. One of us can go with you—if you want.”, Hondo added.
Luca nodded. “Okay.”
Hondo nodded, finally feeling better about Luca leaving. It was decided that Deacon would accompany Luca since Annie was at the hospital anyway. Hondo told them both to be careful and to keep the team updated on your condition. Luca didn’t even take time to change out of all his tactical gear. He just cared about seeing you—making sure you were okay. Deacon noticed him shifting in the seat nervously.
Luca felt like a cat on a hot tin roof. His face scrunched nervously and Deacon could tell he was spiraling.
“You okay, man?”
Luca looked over at Deacon. “Honestly…..no.”, he sighed.
Deacon nodded. “It’s okay not to be okay. I was beside myself when Annie was sick.”
Luca nodded. “I’m just thinking of everything that could be wrong with her.”
“It could be something minor.”
Luca scoffed. “Knowing my luck—no way. I mean she’s the best thing to ever happen to me, Deac. She understands me.”
Deacon kept driving, determined to get Luca there as fast as he could. “I know.”
Deacon didn’t check his phone after texting Annie that he was on his way with Luca. Traffic was horrible as per usual in LA. Deacon was a good driver, used to dealing with the congested highway.
“I could have driven.”, Luca grumbled, crossing his arms and shifting in the seat for the thousandth time.
“Sorry boss’s orders.”, Deacon shrugged playfully, a soft smirk crossing his lips.
Luca slumped over against the door, his anxiety getting the best of him. He thought he would handle stress better than this. And to be honest, he was a little angry at himself for getting so worked up. But this wasn’t just anything—this was you, the love of his life. He had never felt this way about another woman. He was going to marry you. And soon, especially after this. If everything was alright with you. His mind was racing with possibilities, going through any and every scenario.
Deacon knew what he was doing. He had done the exact thing when Annie was sick. He knew Luca felt guilty about leaving you and going to work. Deacon weaved in and out of traffic in an attempt to get to the hospital faster. Luca huffed and puffed, silently cursing the traffic and hitting the dashboard of his truck.
After what felt like a hundred years, they finally pulled up to the emergency room entrance. Luca hardly gave Deacon time to shift his truck into the park before he was jumping out. Deacon threw his hands up, making sure he was parked at least halfway decent before jumping out of Luca’s truck with the keys and running to catch up to Luca.
Luca cleared the automatic doors, instantly going to the registration desk.
“Can I help you sir?”
“My fiancee is here.”, Luca threw his hands down on the desk, tapping them nervously.
“Your name?”
“Dominique Luca. I should be on her paperwork.”
“What’s her name?”
Luca gave them your name. He wished in that moment you shared his. He wished he could call himself your husband.
“She’s in room three. I’ll take you both back there.”
Luca nodded as he looked back at Deacon.
“Want me to follow?”
“Yeah, man. It’s fine.”
Deacon nodded, imagining that Luca needed the emotional support. The registrar opened the door and met Luca on the other side before the door to the main emergency room opened. Nurses were running around like crazy, the desk right in the middle of the room. The registrar talked quickly to a nurse and she nodded, looking at him. Luca forgot he had left his SWAT stuff on.
“Officer Luca?”, the nurse asked, holding her clipboard.
Luca nodded.
“Your fiancée is in room three. The doctor will be in shortly to give you an update.”
“Great. Thanks.”
“No problem, follow me.”, she smiled softly and part of Luca wondered why she was smiling when his entire world felt like it was falling apart.
Part of him felt angry but he decided to hold it together. Deacon was behind him as they snaked their way through the emergency department to room three. The nurse grabbed the blue curtain, pulling it back.
“I have a visitor.”, she sing-songed.
Luca held his breath. Were you awake? All these questions were running through his head and he was finally going to get his answers. There were a lot of sounds in the emergency room from young children crying, people moaning in pain, and all the alarms going off constantly. But it was like everything went silent as he waited for the nurse to move back to reveal you. His mouth pursed open, trying to find the right words to say.
You were lying there with your eyes open, a small smile on your face. “Hey babe.”
Annie was beside you at the head of your bed, holding your hand. Annie was a great friend and you were very thankful for your SWAT family. Annie smiled, realizing Luca and Deacon had arrived. She let go of your hand and moved to give Luca room but he wasn’t waiting. He rushed over to you, tears forming in his ocean-blue eyes.
“Hey, baby. Are you feeling okay?”, he immediately asked, taking you in his arms.
Your heart monitor was beeping in the background but neither of you was paying attention to anything but one another. He kissed your head, brushing through your hair before you both smiled at one another.
“I’m so sorry for leaving you this morning.”
“Stop that.”, you whispered lightly. “Don’t beat yourself up. It’s not your fault.”
“It is—I should have stayed home with you. You needed me.”
“Luca.”
“Baby, I would have never forgiven myself if something happened to you.”
“But I’m gonna be okay.”
You smiled softly as you touched noses before sharing a small, soft kiss. Luca thought for a moment that he would never get this opportunity again. Your lips felt like heaven and he was so relieved.
“So everything is going to be okay?”
“Well—mostly.”
“Mostly?”, Luca questioned, concern evident in his voice.
“Sit down, babe.”, you rubbed his muscular arm gently.
This was it. Luca felt his heart plummet into his stomach. This was the moment you were going to tell him—you were going to give him the bad news. Luca swallowed hard, his legs beginning to feel like jello. He was never this easily rattled. But this was you. It was a whole different ball game, it was okay to be vulnerable. A lesson you had taught him. Annie helped by scooting a chair closer to the edge of the bed so he could sit down beside you. If only he knew what she did.
Luca took a seat, immediately grabbing your hand. Just as he did, the doctor pulled the curtain back, getting everyone’s attention.
“Officer Luca?”
Luca looked up at him, and the doctor immediately extended his hand. Luca took it, shaking his hand firmly. “Glad you could join us. I’ve already talked to your fiancee’ but she wanted you present as well.”
“Sorry—my job is a little demanding.”, Luca laughed nervously.
Luca’s blue eyes panned over to you, still managing to give you a soft smile as he squeezed your hand. His heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest.
“We’ll be outside.”, Deacon breathed softly, grabbing Annie’s hand and exiting the room as quietly as they both could.
“Alright, well. First of all, her iron level and blood pressure were low upon arrival to the emergency room which aided in her passing out at home. We have already given her an iron infusion along with some fluids but are admitting her overnight for observation. She will possibly need another infusion next week depending on the results of her blood work. On to other news,”, he smiled softly.
Luca was confused while he was smiling.
“Both of these were results of another finding.”
“And that is?”, Luca questioned bravely.
He needed answers.
“Congratulations Officer Luca. Your fiancée is pregnant. HCG levels are perfect for an estimated four weeks pregnant.”
Luca’s eyes widened before he turned to you. Did he really just hear what he thought he heard? It was the sentence he had waited forever to hear.
“Pregnant?”, Luca repeated.
You smirked softly. “Pregnant.”, you whispered.
“What? Babe!”, he exclaimed, a relaxed feeling finally washing over him as his lips curved into a smile and his blue eyes softened before he immediately took you into his arms.
You giggled lightly, wrapping your arms around him. It felt nice to be in his arms and you closed your eyes, taking in this feeling. You always did—just in case there was a day he didn’t get to come home. You hated to even think about the possibility but you knew that was part of what you signed up for. You always prayed for his safety along with his teammates. He pulled back to look at you, tears in his eyes.
“I’m really gonna be a dad?”
You nodded before both of you laughed easily.
“Congratulations to both of you. We will let you know as soon as we get you a room upstairs.”, the doctor smiled before leaving.
Luca turned back to look at you. “I can’t believe it—but I thought you wanted to get married first.”
You shrugged easily. “Life sometimes throws curveballs.”
Luca smiled, rubbing your cheek softly. “I never thought this moment was ever going to happen for me. I thought I was always going to be stuck as Uncle Luca.”
You both laughed before you began to speak. “You’re an amazing uncle, so I just know you’re going to be an amazing dad.”
Luca smiled brightly at the compliment. “I’m so happy.”
“Me too.”, you began. “But I’m not gonna lie I was a little anxious to tell you.”
“Me?”
You nodded again. “It’s just nerve-wracking. I mean I didn’t know if you wanted this right now.”
Luca sighed, shifting in the chair lightly. “I get it. I know you wanted to get married first. I mean—I know we weren’t being safe like we should but we weren’t exactly trying either.”
You giggled at the use of his terminology. “True.”
“Deacon and I even had this conversation this morning—and I thought there was no way in this world you were pregnant.”
“Me either, honestly.”
“But I’m thrilled. I can’t wait to be a dad—I can’t wait for you to start getting a little bump.”, Luca touched your flat stomach.
You placed your hand over his.
“Maybe we should move our wedding up.”, you smirked.
“Sounds good. You tell me a date and we will make it happen, babe.”
You all shared another kiss before you began grinning widely.
“Maybe we should let Deacon and Annie back in.”
“Yeah, maybe.”, Luca laughed.
Luca let go of your hand just long enough to walk to the curtain and open it, telling Annie and Deacon they could come in. They followed him back inside the small curtained room. You could only hope that your and Luca’s relationship could be like Deacon and Annie’s—maybe even better. So far, he had exceeded every expectation. Deacon smirked at Luca and you were unsure if Annie had clued him in.
“So Luca, was I right? Is there a chance we will have a fourth-generation SWAT member?”
Luca smirked back, elbowing Deacon playfully. “Maybe.”
You and Annie looked at one another, laughing while not being surprised by their horseplay.
“Yeah, you were right Deac. I’m gonna be a dad.”
There were obvious tears pooling in his blue eyes and Deacon couldn’t help but smile as he pulled Luca in for a hug, patting his back. Annie couldn’t help but give a soft smile before her eyes panned over to you. You couldn’t help but notice the tears beginning to pool in your own eyes watching how excited Luca was. This was better than anything you could have imagined.
“Well, guess it’s my turn to be an uncle now.”, Deacon smirked.
"How long until we can tell the rest of the team?", Annie chimed in.
You looked at Luca and he looked back at you, softly caressing his thumb over your hand.
"What do you think, babe?"
You giggled softly before noticing Hondo, Chris, Jim, and Tan walking through the emergency room through the small slit in the curtain. "I'm thinking soon."
______________________________________________________________
To say you had butterflies in your stomach was an understatement. You felt violently nauseous at the thought of taking another pregnancy test only to be met with disappointment and anger when it turned out to be negative. You and Luca had been trying to get pregnant for the last 3 years and it just wasn’t happening. You had PCOS and the idea of never being able to carry your own children or giving your husband the family you’ve both dreamt of terrified you.
You pulled yourself off the sofa just as Luca pulled out of the driveway to head to work. You had been feeling a bit off lately. You’d been feeling more tired and nauseous than normal. You didn’t tell Luca this as you didn’t want to get his hopes up if in case it turned out to be your PCOS flaring up. You trudged your way to the bathroom. You opened the cabinet under the sink, rummaging around for the pregnancy tests you had bought two days ago, but kept putting off taking them. You knew you were setting yourself up for heartache.
You peed in a cup and dipped the first test into the cup. You sat the test down on the bathroom counter and set a timer on your phone. You anxiously paced around the bathroom till the timer went off. When the alarm blared from your phone you felt all the breath escape your lungs. Your legs felt like jelly and your hands were shaking. You turned over the test and it felt like all the blood drained from your body. There it was. That second pink line that you had so desperately wanted to appear. There it was. You were pregnant. You peed in the cup again and took the other test in the box. This time it was a digital one. Again you set the timer on your phone and waited. Those 3 minutes felt like 3 hours. Your vision was blurred from the amount of tears that were escaping your eyes and cascading down your flushed cheeks. The timer went off and sure enough you hadn’t gone mad. “pregnant 2-3 weeks” it read. You didn’t know what to do. You stood for what must’ve been 30 mins just staring at the tests in fear the result would change, but it didn’t. You couldn’t wait to tell Luca but you were afraid. What if you miscarried after you told him, it was so early in the pregnancy that anything could happen. You decided to phone your doctor and book in for an appointment to discuss your prenatal care. You had decided not to tell Luca until you were a bit further on in the pregnancy. Hiding it from his wasn’t easy though. He questioned why suddenly your favourite pizza made you sick, why you couldn’t stand the smell of his favourite cologne anymore as it made you gag and why on numerous occasions he had woken up to find you missing from bed only for him to come downstairs and find you making some weird concoction of foods that almost always involved pickles, Hot Cheetos, and mustard. You’d just about managed to convince him that your PCOS was wreaking havoc on your hormones and that’s why you were acting so strange – he didn’t question it so as to not upset you, but he also didn’t entirely believe you either.
You went to your 12 week scan alone. You wanted to be sure everything was ok before telling Luca. Your baby was perfectly healthy and thriving, as were you apart from the vomiting, fatigue and heartburn, but it was all worth it for your little miracle. You had ordered a onesie that said “4th Generation Swat on the way” on the front and read “Baby Luca” on the back. You couldn’t wait to see Luca’s reaction when he opened the box. You had also got Luca a t-shirt with the word dad on the front of it and a mug with your sonograph picture on it. You wrapped everything in tissue paper and neatly placed them in a box. You placed the box on the coffee table in anticipation of Luca’s arrival home from work. You had fixed yourself up as you wanted to record his reaction not only to keep the memory but also you were sure the team would want to see his reaction. You threw on the only pain of denim jeans that still fit. You paired your jeans with a white half zip and a baseball cap as you hadn’t got a chance to shower yet due to the fact your head was in the toilet bowl most of the day.
You set your phone up on a book shelf, where Luca wouldn’t see it and sat on the sofa. You waited nervously for his reaction. As soon as he pulled into the driveway, the butterflies in your stomach erupted. Luca walked through the door and smiled at you.
“Hey babe, how was work?”, you asked, trying to act normal and not ruin the surprise.
“Good”, he smiled and you could see the exhaustion in his face. He was about to go upstairs and shower when you called him.
“Babe”, you called, a hint of excitement in your voice.
“Yeah, everything ok”, he asked as her turned around and stood in front of you, picking up on the change in your tone.
“Yeah, I’m ok, would you sit beside me for a sec, I wanna give you something”, you said hardly able to contain yourself as the corners of your mouth turned up in a half smile.
“Sure”, he said hesitantly, giving you a questioning look and he slowly sat beside you on the couch. You reached out in front of you, picked up the box and placed it on his lap.
“What’s todays date?”, he asked nervously, “I haven’t forgotten an anniversary or something, have I” he said with a nervous laugh.
“No babe, you haven’t”, you laughed, “just open it”, you said shoving the box closer to him, growing impatient now.
Luca carefully undid the light blue bow on the box and lifted off the lid. He peeled back the tissue paper and carefully lifted out the t-shirt you had bought for him. He looked at the t-shirt and then you, a smile growing on his face. He didn’t say a word but kept looking through the box. Next he pulled out the onesie, unwrapping it. He looked at the onesie in disbelief. He started to well up, pulling you in for a tight hug. “is it true”, he asked sniffling.
“Yes baby, you’re gonna be a dad”, you said choking back tears.”
“I can’t believe it”, Luca smiled, beaming from ear to ear, proud as punch.
He pulled out the mug from the bottom of the box and smiled. “I can’t wait to bring this to work with me so I can look at our little bean everyday”, he said, wiping his thumb over the picture lovingly.
“When can we tell the team, how far along are you, when did you find out”, he bombarded you with questions.
“I found out a couple of weeks ago, but I didn’t tell you as I wanted to be sure first” you said, hoping he wouldn’t be mad at you’d that you waited so long to tell him.
“I understand”, he said, placing a kiss on your forehead.
I have another scan in a few weeks to find out the gender”, you explained.
“let me know when it is and I’ll get the day off work, I want to come with you”, he stated.
“Sure thing”, you smiled. “What do you say I come drive you to work tomorrow and we can tell the team together, because I know you’re gonna let it slip”, you saying laughing at his reaction as he tried to act like he was offended.
“Oh I can’t wait”, he said jumping off the sofa.
You got off the sofa to go and fetch your phone, replaying the video to see his reaction. You cropped the video so it just showed the important parts as you knew the team would ask to see it.
That night Luca couldn’t fall asleep. He kept thinking about your future and the fact that he was finally going to be a dad after all the years of trying. Eventually he drifted off to sleep, his arms protectively around your wait, hands rubbing your stomach. You smiled leaning back into his toned chest, listening to his rhythm of his heartbeat to fall asleep. You couldn’t wait to finally have your little family and neither could Luca.
