This new crime show declared itself to be the first English-language “police procedural” drama produced and set on the French Riviera since the 197-s although its thunder was rather stolen by Britbox’s Murder In Province, which was made later but aired first. Set on Côte d’Azur, this one focuses on the unlikely crime-fighting partnership between idealistic cop Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas, Gloria) and ex-mafia con artist Harry King (Jamie Bamber, Battlestar Galactica) who solve a murder case each week, while Lucie hunts for the criminals who framed her police hero dad.

We rather approve of all these cosy crime series set in exotic locations - or just ones with great weather, really. The Mallorca Files (BBC UKTV, Wednesday), for example, or this new one that is said to be the first English-language procedural to be produced in Cannes in more than 50 years. (Riviera presumably doesn’t count as it’s not a procedural.) Lucie Lucas is the local detective who teams up with a former con artist and Englishman played by Jamie Bamber. The show is created by Chris Murray, known for his work on Midsomer Murders, Agatha Raisin and the rebooted Van Der Valk.

There’s something for everyone in this Riviera detective show: great hair, chiselled jaws, luxury locations, sexual tension. And it’s this last element between its lead characters, detective Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) and slightly shady Harry King (Jamie Bamber) that’s most dominant. Bamber’s con-artist grifts will put some viewers in mind of Pierce Brosnan in Remington Steele. Appropriately enough, as Bamber (in a tux in a casino) looks like he’s auditioning for James Bond.

But as she investigates the death of a celebrated street artist known as the Jester, she and Harry keep crossing paths - and when Harry reveals he may be able to help Camille clear her father, the former chief of police, from alleged corruption charges, the two strike a mutually beneficial deal... Camille being a policewoman is a problem for Harry because he’s got something to hide,’ says Jamie. ‘But they each have something that the other needs. Gradually they get more dependent on each other, and become the od couple that works together solving crimes!’

Congratulations! We found it! the Worst Smell In The World!

It’s that waxy-sweet, old-fashioned scent that makes me think “old lady’s purse” or “cheap old men’s flavored pipe tobacco” or “interior of a jitney cab with tinted glass windows and one of those Little Trees air fresheners and dice hanging over the dashboard” or “seedy dive bar.”

It’s the base of a lot of perfumes, old and new; Zibeline and Narcisse Noir land here, and so do Auphorie Miyako and Capsule Troupe and Jo Malone Leather and Artemisia. Kenzo Flower is saturated with it.

No two perfumes describe it with the same notes, but it’s unmistakable.

Luca Turin calls it “debonair” and thinks of Fred Astaire, but I just find it dismal.

Launched in 1923, Royal Bain de Champagne is the ur-form of this smell, on a pedestal by itself with no distractions.

Fuck this smell in particular.

His pied-a-terre in Paris is elegant, but simple. Not precisely to his tastes. But it's a temporary home, with a gorgeous views and a soft bed. Just moments upon his return, his dark eyes keep at the plushness of the bed. How there is a chance, minimal as it is, that he would not slip into the silk sheets alone. Lex all but jumps out of his own skin, slicking back his hair with urgent purpose. He's toiled with the questions - what if Lucas came? What if he did not? And the answer comes with the look of him, in a different light. A smile, attempting to be debonair to hide the fluttering in his gut. "You made it." He exhales, in nervous disbelief. Stepping backwards, he waits until Lucas steps into his flat. Nerves and excitement caught in a vicious cycle, as he approaches the Englishman from behind. "You are maddening, do you know that?" Except it was a different kind of maddening from their prior interactions, with his hands twitching at his sides just to touch him.

lucas can hardly believe the shift in atmosphere, heart pounding hard against his ribcage. the blond suspects he should've recognised his attraction wrapped up as contempt, but in spite of his efforts to feel a sense of pride in who he was, there were still such huge parts of his soul that attempted to hide it, even from himself. his gaze remains focused on his american colleague, unable to find any traces of artificiality in his gaze, his actions or tone. biting into his bottom lip, there's no question about what he's going to do. he raises from the chair he'd taken solace for the past...hour or so, stands tall and begins his anxiety provoking journey towards the other's apartment for their time here. licking at his lips, he offers the door a firm knock, all too eager to see the other man again, despite it being mere minutes since he'd seen him last. a ball of nerves pull at his abdomen, a mixture that he cannot begin to untangle right now.

Picture Cannes and you’ll probably imagine an azure ocean, the annual film festival or multimillionaires sunbathing on superyachts - but Acorn TV’s six-part romantic crime drama Cannes Confidential is hoping to make it synonymous with screwball comedy and a ‘will they, won’t the? central pairing.

Detective Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) is having a challenging day when she collides with debonair art collector Harry King (Beyond Paradise’s Jamie Bamber) on the Boulevard de la Croisette, wrecking her beloved classic car in the process. Already irritated by the smooth-talking stranger, Camille’s day goes from bad to worse as she and her colleague Léa Robert (Tamara Marthe) investigate the murder of a street artist known as the Jester, only to find themselves crossing paths with Harry...

He pops us everywhere within the town, infuriating her,’ reveals Bamber. ‘They get off on the wrong foot, and the bickering and badinage, an that energy between two people with sexual chemistry finding each other intolerable was what drew me in.’ It soon becomes clear that there’s much more to Harry than he’s willing to let on to anyone, but as Camille comes close to finding out what he’s really up to, he proposes a mutually-beneficial alliance between the two of them.

PIVOTAL PACT

‘When Harry finds out she’s a policewoman, it’s a problem for him because he’s got something to hide,’ says Bamber, 50. ‘But he also happens to know a lot of the characters involved in the supposed wrongful imprisonment of her dad, the former chief of police, so they each have something that the other needs.

‘They have a quick agreement, a sort of poisoned chalice that they each take a sip from, and from that moment, they become more dependent on each other.’

Bamber likens the show to ‘the love child of Moonlighting, The Persuaders! and Miami Vice’ with its compelling blend of a feuding odd couple at its centre and solving crimes in scenic locations, but Cannes Confidential has a few more twists up its sleeve... ‘Léa, Camille’s police partner has designs on her as well,’ explains Bamber. ‘So you’ve got this odd love triangle at the heart of the show, each angle of the triangle antagonising the other.’

For avowed Francophile Bamber, who speaks fluent French, the lure of filming on location in and around Cannes proved impossible to resist - as was the opportunity to deploy his skills for the show’s French-language version. ‘The language was a big deal, because you’ve got a mostly French cast who are working in English and they were real troopers,’ says Bamber. ‘But they shoe was on the other foot when we dubbed into French - I was allowed to dub my own part, but that was when the French actors really came to the fore!’

Navigating a language barrier wasn’t the only difficulty that Bamber faced during filming for the series last summer - the scorching Mediterranean temperatures left him literally hot under the collar. ‘The most challenging thing I had to deal with was wearing a three-piece suit in the sunshine for three months, and trying not to ruin it with perspiration!’ he laughs. ‘My dresser, did amazing work with portable fans, whipping one shirt off and drying it while I wore the other, because I was wringing wet a lot of the time.’
