Reflections from Europe
I heard a quote once saying that “the core of man’s soul comes from new experiences” and I think it’s true. I’ve never felt more alive than when I’m traveling. Seeing and experiencing new things outside the realm of everyday life is so important, especially with our stressful lifestyles. I noticed that Europeans seemed to live more fully, taking life at a slower and more intentional pace than is the usual here in the America. Having a seemingly simpler life, not an easy one but a simple one, I feel that we often over complicate things. hiking up Mt. Vesuvius or exploring various other sites brought me so much peace. Something about the journey up the volcano or the mountains in general made me feel closer to God with every step. I have taken nature for granted, but this helped me to reconnect with it and was very renewing for my soul. I could see beauty everywhere I turned, with the diversity and originality of people’s homes and shops, all portraying their stories, not conforming to one uniform style. It was beyond words. I took so many pictures but none can do justice to the beauty everywhere. I wished I could freeze an image in time and refer back to it whenever the dust of Lubbock gets to be too much. The mountains and hills were breathtaking, and whenever we were able to hike I savored every minute. There’s something about being above everything else and looking down— seeing how small and insignificant we really are. It sounds demoralizing, but to me it’s really reassuring. God’s power can be seen so evidently in his creations to the point where just existing in it automatically puts you at ease. I already miss the views so much, but I am beyond thankful to get to experiance the wonder of places that many live, many will never visit, and many wish to be. The nature was my favorite part; I loved looking around and appreciating the shores, mountains, and country sides. We don���t have a lot to look at in Lubbock, but it has honestly made me appreciate this trip so much more.
Sometimes you have to get away in order to appreciate the simple things. This trip was so influential in shaping how I see the world and the people in it. I’ve traveled out of the country several times but never really let the experience set in and let it affect my daily life. That’s why I enjoyed journaling, and I’m going continue doing it because I enjoy being able to look back and remember the experiences I’ve had. At least for me It isn’t enough to just live in the moment, sometimes you need reminders of the stories and memories that each site, hotel, or street holds. We took thousands of steps on grounds where so many people before of us had walked and where so many stories that shaped our world today took place. I remember learning in school about these things we now were able to physically see and experience in person. Therefore, it was special to piece together the lessons we learned, with the actual historical sites and art pieces.
Of course this trip was also super fun because I got to connect with my class more ways then I would while just at school. So many memories were made, and I got closer with a lot of people. I am glad that we got to go this year, because now we have the opportunity to build off of these memories with classmates going forward into our senior year, as opposed to the current seniors, who won’t have much longer together as a class. I also reflected a lot in my life and how high school will soon come to an end. I decided to just live and enjoy even in the hard moments because you never know the value of a moment till it’s gone.
This is a trip I feel like every person deserves to take. We are so fortunate to have gotten to do it at such a young age.

Micaiah had found themselves spending more and more time in the mysterious building at the center of the Island. Sometimes to make good on their promise to Jupiter to hopefully find her family. Which, so far they hadn't had any luck with, but they'd keep trying. Someone else they tried to check up on was Ify and Adanna - the two children he and Jupiter had found in that Halloween Store back in Lubbock, Texas. So far, no luck. The area still seemed as dead as ever, with nothing moving whenever Micaiah decided to check it out. It worried them. But they had left supplies at the store, at least. Other than that, there was nothing they could do.
However, the reason they were here right now was for their mandatory shifts. Every resident on Panopticon had to do them on occasion. Micaiah did not partcicularly mind, though the whole thing had taken some adjusting. But they'd accepted it. At least partially.
Just as they were making their way into the Flower Tower, they ran into someone. "Oh, sorry-" They apologized automatically, having to steady themselves on the doorframe in order to not lose their balance. They cast a glance at the person they'd almost run over, recognizing them rather quickly.
"Oh, Walid. Hello. I've actually been looking for you." Everyone on Panopticon kind of knew each other. But, despite Walid being a long-time resident, Micaiah couldn't say that they really... spoke much. Maybe it was just their lack of common interests. Walid seemed to be quite interested in the technological area, meanwhile Micaiah spent most of their times in the gardens. It seemed almost natural that there wouldn't be much contact between them, aside from the usual pleasantries. However, with how often Micaiah would be busy with the fower tower, that was probably just about to change.
"I hope I'm not bothering you, in case you're currently coming home from your shift, but... you know a lot about the tower, right? I would like to hear more about it. How it works."

Taking Aim
One of the first lectures I give in every course I teach is the importance of determining your target market, and then building all of your marketing activities around it. You can have more than one target, but you should never try to be all things to all people. Make your choice(s) wisely, because once you do, it is hard to change them.
But sometimes your target market finds you.
I have seen this play out here in Canyon America, where the Pondaseta Pizza Company (owned by Pondaseta Brewery of Amarillo) and The Lumberyard Canyon opened only days apart. I have become a regular at Pondaseta because I love their beers, as well as their pizzas. And while I poked at The Lumberyard a few days ago, mentioning how I walked out, I decided to give them a second chance this last Saturday night.
Earlier that same day, Youngest Daughter and I had lunch at Pondaseta, so I was able to compare the two only hours apart. Little did I realize that in so doing I was laying the foundation for this blog.

Both places are family-friendly, and I witnessed many parents with their kiddos in tow. But that’s where the similarity ends. Pondaseta skews older, and The Lumberyard is apparently where the college kids have found their new home. Neither restaurant has made a concerted effort to reach these demos; we all just found our place on our own.
In spite of the menu being meat-heavy at The Lumberyard, I was able to customize what turned out to be an amazing veggie taco. There’s no table service, so you order as soon as you enter, then find a table. Since I was flying solo, I sat at the bar, book in hand. My ringside seat allowed me to witness WT students coming back to the bar repeatedly for more buckets of bottled beer. That was when I realized why so many students were there: Cheap beer, and lots of it.

Unfortunately, the self-serve Beer Wall was still down, and for the third day. I have no idea if they have fixed it yet, but this was to be their signature attraction. So important is this that they had only stocked a small selection of bottled beers. That’s not a good look. It would be like going to a burger joint and their grill is broken, so here are some sliders we stuck in the microwave.
Their food menu is pretty much standard pub fare, and not terribly high priced. That’s another attraction for the families as well as college students. Inside, there’s a dizzying array of colored lights, metal signs, and neon. It’s clear they took their cues from Cook’s Garage in Lubbock, the main difference being that Cook’s has many dozens of vintage neon signs, whereas The Lumberyard’s signs are primarily stock modern signs intended as decor, as well as beer signs provided by wholesalers. It takes a ton of money, though, to amass a top-tier collection of vintage signs, and if you want to see museum-quality signage, make the trip down to Lubbock.
Meanwhile over at Pondaseta, they’re busy pouring beer and making pizzas in the 100-year-old train depot they renovated during the last 21 months. It is not an understatement that the building shakes when the trains go by (which is about every 5-8 minutes). There are two bars and dining areas, and while there are several big screen TVs in the main east area, there is no sports bar feel like at The Lumberyard.
Also, there are no buckets of beer, only $8 pints. Pizzas will run $18-$25. Our lunch, which included two BYO pizzas, two beers, tax, and tip, cost me $64. My taco at The Lumberyard was $8.
There you go. Price is more than likely the filtering mechanism here, and customers figure it out pretty fast. I could make a smug geezer comment about younger folks not being very discriminating in their beer tastes, but I am betting it’s more about the money. Give it time. To quote out of context comedian Steve Martin,” I remember when I had my first beer,” and it wasn’t anything special or exotic.
At this point, you might argue that the menu and pricing at each place is implicit target marketing. You would have a point. But beyond these elements, I don’t see any other marketing activities directed to the people who have already decided where they will patronize.
I must also comment on their overall digital marketing, because…well…that’s what I teach. It is at this point that Pondaseta stands head and shoulders above The Lumberyard. Pondaseta works their Insta and Facebook accounts to the hilt, posting stories as well as static posts every day. I never have to wonder what’s going on any individual day, because they let everyone know that Monday is Trivia Night, this Thursday is a special beer release party, and that they just expanded their hours to include lunch seven days a week. Bear in mind that with the opening of the Canyon location, they are managing their socials for two places with different events, menus, and activities. That’s a lot of work.
The Lumberyard does use Facebook to create events, but I don’t see much of anything else. Occasional posts let fans know about who is appearing in their music venue, but it seems less coordinated than at Pondaseta. And when it comes to websites, once again Pondaseta has it dialed in. Both are guilty of not having 100% updated content (these things can be hard to coordinate with third-party providers), but The Lumberyard site has broken elements when viewed in Firefox and Chrome. Trust me. I checked it out in three browsers. Their site worked flawlessly only in Safari.
In the last two years I have put my undergrad Digital Marketing students on the Pondaseta Canyon location. They had to develop a year-long digital campaign. Afterward, I shared these with Pondaseta. I’m not sure if my students had any influence in their current digital efforts, but a prof can dream, right? They’re doing it exceedingly well.
I’ll return to The Lumberyard, mostly to see how that Beer Wall is coming along, and maybe for another taco. But I’ll be spending a lot more of my time at Pondaseta. I have found my people, my tribe. I can be old with others on the same path. While I don’t mind eating and imbibing among college students, I think it’s good for you to have your place as well.
And in the end, we have helped both of these new establishments determine who their target market is. Sometimes things just work out this way.

William Voss, BJU Class of 1956.
William John Voss was born to the late Donovan Rudolph Voss and Mary Thelma Hearn on November 13, 1934, in Pike County, Missouri. Affectionately, his mother and grandmother called him Billy John. In 1938, Billy John attended Excelsior School near Bowling Green, MO, for the first three years, which was a one room school house serving 1st through 8th grade (with no air conditioning, no heat, no lights, no indoor plumbing, as emphatically noted by ""Papa""). In 1942, the family moved to Pueblo, Colorado, where Bill attended local schools.
Bill graduated from Centennial High School in 1952, and attended Pueblo Junior College graduating in 1954. He received his Bachelor of Science from Bob Jones University in 1956, majoring in Biology and Education. On June 1, 1957, at Park Hill Baptist Church in Pueblo, he married Helen Kae Murphy, who preceded him in death on December 24, 2004.
Continuing his education, Bill attended Southern Illinois University and the University of Hawaii studying Entomology. He received his Masters of Science in Biology from Texas Tech University. While pursuing his degree, Bill worked for the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu, and then taught high school in Lubbock. He researched various types of arthropods including insects, specifically fleas and arachnids (mites and ticks) with an emphasis on mites in reptiles. He followed in the footsteps of his beloved professor, Dr. Russell W. Stradtmann from Texas Tech, and was a few hours shy of his PhD in Entomology. Bill served for 40 years as the Curator of Science with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, later becoming Curator Emeritus. Bill studied and kept various kinds of plants & animals all his life.
Serving as an Elder at Northwest Bible Church in Fort Worth, Bill assisted in a church plant located in west Fort Worth. He continued serving as Elder for 30 years at Redeemer Bible Church while teaching all ages of Bible Study, Sunday School, and Awanas. He enjoyed supporting, visiting, and hosting missionaries from all around the world and served on many missions committees.
While Bill lived in Missouri, Colorado, Maryland, South Carolina, Illinois, Hawaii, and Texas, he also traveled extensively. He visited almost every Canadian province, Mexican state, and US state except the Dakotas. Bill traveled worldwide visiting Japan, China, Taiwan, Macao, the Philippines, New Zealand, Antarctica, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, France, and Israel. He received the US Service Medal for serving in the Antarctic.
Rewarding activities for Bill were digging up dinosaurs, making Thanksgiving dinner out of buffalo meat, and hosting the Russian Astronauts and Neil Armstrong during the Soviet Space Exhibition. He enjoyed serving as the Naturalist for the annual 8th Grade Big Bend Trip with Fort Worth Country Day School for over 32 yrs, heading and directing the Science Club at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History for over 40 years, as well as leading numerous collecting field trips to build the natural science collection for the Museum.
William John Voss passed away in his home on November 13, 2024, with his family near. He is survived by his brother Gordon L Voss and his wife Judy, his son Cary Russell William Voss and his wife Kimberly, daughter Mary Katheryn Barbur and her husband John, daughter Keely Sue Kisor, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He celebrated his 90th birthday at Redeemer Bible Church with family and friends just days before his passing.
His place of interment will be at the Vandalia Cemetery in Missouri alongside his high school sweetheart and wife of 47 years. He will be forever revered as Billy John, William John, Bill, Uncle Bill, Dr. Voss, ""Bill Voss the Science Boss,"" Papa, and Papa Bill, among other monikers.
A memorial service will be held on January 4, 2025, 11:00 a.m. CST, at Redeemer Bible Church, 100 Verna Trail N, White Settlement, Texas, 76108.
