starter for: @walid-the-engineer
location: Flower Tower
Micaiah had found themselves spending more and more time in the mysterious building at the center of the Island. Sometimes to make good on their promise to Jupiter to hopefully find her family. Which, so far they hadn't had any luck with, but they'd keep trying. Someone else they tried to check up on was Ify and Adanna - the two children he and Jupiter had found in that Halloween Store back in Lubbock, Texas. So far, no luck. The area still seemed as dead as ever, with nothing moving whenever Micaiah decided to check it out. It worried them. But they had left supplies at the store, at least. Other than that, there was nothing they could do.
However, the reason they were here right now was for their mandatory shifts. Every resident on Panopticon had to do them on occasion. Micaiah did not partcicularly mind, though the whole thing had taken some adjusting. But they'd accepted it. At least partially.
Just as they were making their way into the Flower Tower, they ran into someone. "Oh, sorry-" They apologized automatically, having to steady themselves on the doorframe in order to not lose their balance. They cast a glance at the person they'd almost run over, recognizing them rather quickly.
"Oh, Walid. Hello. I've actually been looking for you." Everyone on Panopticon kind of knew each other. But, despite Walid being a long-time resident, Micaiah couldn't say that they really... spoke much. Maybe it was just their lack of common interests. Walid seemed to be quite interested in the technological area, meanwhile Micaiah spent most of their times in the gardens. It seemed almost natural that there wouldn't be much contact between them, aside from the usual pleasantries. However, with how often Micaiah would be busy with the fower tower, that was probably just about to change.
"I hope I'm not bothering you, in case you're currently coming home from your shift, but... you know a lot about the tower, right? I would like to hear more about it. How it works."

Lemelson-MIT awards 2024-25 InvenTeam grants to eight high school teams
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/lemelson-mit-awards-2024-25-inventeam-grants-to-eight-high-school-teams/
Lemelson-MIT awards 2024-25 InvenTeam grants to eight high school teams
The Lemelson-MIT Program has announced the 2024-25 InvenTeams — eight teams of high school students, teachers, and mentors from across the country. Each team will each receive $7,500 in grant funding and year-long support to build a technological invention to solve a problem of their own choosing. The students’ inventions are inspired by real-world problems they identified in their local communities.
The InvenTeams were selected by a respected panel consisting of university professors, inventors, entrepreneurs, industry professionals, and college students. Some panel members were former InvenTeam members now working in industry. The InvenTeams are focusing on problems facing their local communities, with a goal that their inventions will have a positive impact on beneficiaries and, ultimately, improve the lives of others beyond their communities.
This year’s teams are:
Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center (Battle Creek, Michigan)
Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
Colegio Rosa-Bell (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico)
Edison High School (Edison, New Jersey)
Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science (Worcester, Massachusetts)
Nitro High School (Nitro, West Virginia)
Southcrest Christian School (Lubbock, Texas)
Ygnacio Valley High School (Concord, California)
InvenTeams are comprised of students, teachers and community mentors who pursue year-long invention projects involving creative thinking, problem-solving, and hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The InvenTeams’ prototype inventions will be showcased at a technical review within their home communities in February 2025, and then again as a final prototype at EurekaFest — an invention celebration taking place June 9-11, 2025, at MIT.
“The InvenTeams are focusing on solving problems that impact their local communities,” says Leigh Estabrooks, Lemelson-MIT’s invention education officer. “Teams are focusing their technological solutions — their inventions — on health and well-being, environmental issues, and safety concerns. These high school students are not just problem-solvers of tomorrow, they are problem solvers today helping to make our world healthier, greener, and safer.”
This year the Lemelson-MIT Program and the InvenTeams grants initiative celebrate a series of firsts in the annual high school invention grant program. For the first time, a team from their home city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, will participate, representing the Cambridge community’s innovative spirit on a national stage. Additionally, the program welcomes the first team from Puerto Rico, highlighting the expanding reach of the InvenTeams grants initiative. The pioneering teams exemplify the diversity and creativity that fuel invention.
The InvenTeams grants initiative, now in its 21st year, has enabled 18 teams of high school students to be awarded U.S. patents for their projects. Intellectual property education is combined with invention education offerings as part of the Lemelson-MIT Program’s deliberate efforts to remedy historic inequities among those who develop inventions, protect their intellectual property, and commercialize their creations. The ongoing efforts empower students from all backgrounds, equipping them with invaluable problem-solving skills that will serve them well throughout their academic journeys, professional pursuits, and personal lives. The program has worked with over 4,000 students across 304 different InvenTeams nationwide and has included:
partnering with intellectual property (IP) law firms to provide pro bono legal support;
collaborating with industry-leading companies that provide technical guidance and mentoring;
providing professional development for teachers on invention education and IP;
assisting teams with identifying resources within their communities’ innovation ecosystems to support ongoing invention efforts; and
publishing case studies and research to inform the work of invention educators and policy makers to build support for engaging students in efforts to invent solutions to real-world problems, thus fueling the innovation economy in the U.S.
The Lemelson-MIT Program is a national leader in efforts to prepare the next generation of inventors and entrepreneurs, focusing on the expansion of opportunities for people to learn ways inventors find and solve problems that matter to improve lives. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion aims to remedy historic inequities among those who develop inventions, protect their intellectual property, and commercialize their creations.
Jerome H. Lemelson, one of U.S. history’s most prolific inventors, and his wife Dorothy founded the Lemelson-MIT Program in 1994. It is funded by The Lemelson Foundation and administered by the MIT School of Engineering. For more information, contact Leigh Estabrooks.

'Holy Cow': Watch Storm Chasers React in Awe as Tornado Touches Down in Texas
Storm chasers were recently left stunned by an awe-inspiring weather event in Texas that would have sent many running for cover.
Storm chaser Laura Hedien documented a tornado that touched down Sunday afternoon in the tiny city of Silverton, located roughly halfway between Lubbock and Amarillo. She recorded a video of a massive thunderstorm swirling in a crop field and a tornado touching down in open farmland.
See more:
Hedien and the other witnesses were amazed by the tornado's strength and size.
“I have not seen something like this,” someone can be heard saying in the video.
The tornado was captured in a 38-second clip by Hedien but remained in the area for about 20 minutes, according to one of the storm chasers. It didn't take long for the National Weather Service in Lubbock to issue a tornado warning for the area, announcing on X that it would be in effect until 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
By that time, the tornado had mostly dissipated, vanishing northwest of Caprock Canyons State Park, over 20 miles east of where it initially touched down, as reported by the weather service office in Lubbock.
Storm chasers were clearly mesmerized by the sight of the tornado, with several making remarks about its sheer size and location.
"Look at where we are right now," one man can be heard saying.
Another called the tornado "gorgeous," marveling at its shape and size, while others shouted "God bless America" and "Holy cow."
Another expressed hope that "no one was out there." Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the tornado.
Tornado Activity Peaks with Increased Sightings in 2024
Texas has experienced a surge in tornadoes this year, with 13 more than the previous year, totaling 89 so far in 2024, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.
As thunderstorms, a key ingredient for tornado formation, continue to be forecasted this summer, it's crucial to know how to stay safe. A specific combination of thunderstorm winds—upward and downward currents—can create a tornado, according to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research's Center for Science Education.
“The rotating air moves horizontally across the ground and can be tilted vertically by the force of the rising, rotating air. This allows a tornado to form,” explains the center.

Here are some tips from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal to keep you and your loved ones safe if you encounter a tornado near your home or on the road this summer:
Seek Shelter and Protect Your Body:
Take shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of the building, as far as possible from exterior walls and windows—preferably in a basement if available.
If you're on the road, pull your vehicle to the side immediately, get out, and lay flat in a nearby ditch, covering your neck and head if no other protection is possible.
Find a Safe Place:
Find shelter from high winds and debris if you're in an area with a tornado warning, even if it doesn't appear to be headed in your direction.
Seek shelter if a tornado is in proximity, regardless of your elevation.
Even if you're on the banks of a river or lake, find a safe place inside.

Texodus Part I
The DMV is an institution designed to maximize human misery, I think.
Before leaving the state, I really needed to sell my car; I loved my Civic - it was a wonderful car and it is REALLY hard to beat a hybrid with an average of 38mpg that got closer to 42 when doing long-haul highway driving - but it was about 13 years old and a compact is, shall we say, not ideal when your new home is a mile up a 1-lane gravel road. Under such circumstances, you want considerable clearance from the ground (because the largest ruts are only slightly too small to bury a body in) and 4-wheel drive (because it is a gravel road in the mountains where snow and ice happen and you need all the traction you can get). My Civic, having been designed and purchased on the assumption it would never need to do anything particularly adventurous, did not have either of these things.
I actually knew where the car title was (miracle; my ADHD means that ordinarily, if asked where an important piece of paper is which I have not needed to lay hands on in more than a year, the answer is 'uh...') up until the day I intended to sell it.
When I ran a few errands and then realized that I did not have it in my possession.
After panicking and retracing my steps and some desperate prayer, I had not managed to find it, but CarMax lets you reschedule appointments so I pushed it out to the next day and went to the DMV on the theory they could give me a replacement.
The only DMV that does titles is 30 minutes north under perfect conditions, but at this point I optimistically think I will only have to endure it once. So I drive up, wait in line for an hour... and am told there is a lien. There is not a lien. The car is 13 years old. It has been paid off for a WHILE. I had the title.
But there is still a lien in the system, because apparently to get that removed I would have had to take the title to the tax office, and if I did not know that at 37, I most assuredly did not know it in my 20s.
So I drive to my bank, which has a branch fairly close to the DMV... and they have no record of the lien either. After about 40 minutes, they tell me there might be a hard copy in Lubbock and someone will look, but I should probably just go home and they'll call if they find anything.
The next day they tell me they can give me a release of lien and I can pick it up at the branch near my house. I drive over, grab it, drive to the DMV again, wait in line for closer to 2 hours...
And the woman at the window has that sour, pinched, mean expression that says 'I have the power to ruin your day and will derive a tiny little ember of satisfaction from using it.' Ah, I thought. This is the everyday sadist Ryan Dowd warned me about. My day is about to be ruined because this person is going to choose violence.
She says she needs a business card.
What.
A business card for the lien officer who signed off on it.
I stared at her and, when she made it clear she was serious, left the building before I could start screaming.
Because honestly, if I was willing to commit the felony of forging a lien release in the first place, I would have just gone to VistaPrint and forged the business card too.
After rage-crying in my car for probably 5 minutes, I left, because mom was throwing a bit of a goodbye bash and my cousins were going to be there and that was something that would definitely improve my day even if what I most desperately wanted was a nap.
My cousins, because they are angels, listened to my tale of woe with righteous indignation and said they would go with me the next day, and this apparently broke the bureaucratic nightmare curse because the title turned up when I went back into my apartment to collapse for the evening.
I sold my car at the earliest available appointment the following day before anything else could go wrong, but I did not at any point actually get the lien removed officially (apparently they'd have to mail me a replacement title in a week, and I was leaving the state in 2 days at that point, although the tax office was much more pleasant and better-run and not staffed by sadists) or acquire a replacement title, in spite of spending at least 6 hours on the project.
But I did sell my car. Huzzah.

Efficient Waste Management Solutions: The Benefits of Dumpster Rentals in Lubbock, TX
Lubbock, Texas, a city known for its vibrant community and bustling activities, also experiences the need for effective waste management. Whether you're undertaking a home renovation, organizing a community event, or managing a construction project, proper disposal of waste is crucial. In this article, we will explore the advantages of utilizing dumpster rental services in Lubbock, TX, and how it can contribute to a cleaner and more organized environment.
Convenience and Time Efficiency:
One of the primary benefits of opting for dumpster rentals is the convenience they offer. Instead of making numerous trips to a local landfill or waste disposal facility, a rented dumpster provides a centralized location for all your waste. This not only saves time but also reduces the hassle of multiple trips, allowing you to focus more on the task at hand.
Cost-Effective Waste Disposal:
Dumpster rentals in Lubbock, TX, can be a cost-effective solution for managing waste. The flat-rate pricing often includes delivery, pick-up, and disposal fees, making it a predictable and budget-friendly option. By choosing the right-sized dumpster for your needs, you can avoid additional costs associated with multiple trips or overloading smaller containers.
Environmental Responsibility:
Proper waste disposal is not just about convenience; it's also a crucial aspect of environmental responsibility. Reputable dumpster rental services in Lubbock ensure that waste is disposed of in compliance with local regulations and environmental standards. This commitment to responsible waste management helps reduce the environmental impact and promotes sustainable practices within the community.
Flexible Sizing Options:
Dumpster rental services typically offer a range of sizes to accommodate various project needs. Whether you're cleaning out a small garage, demolishing a building, or managing a large-scale construction project, you can choose a dumpster size that aligns with the volume of waste generated. This flexibility ensures that you only pay for the space you need.
Enhanced Safety on Your Project Site:
A cluttered and disorganized project site can pose safety hazards for workers and anyone in the vicinity. By having a designated dumpster on-site, you can maintain a cleaner and safer work environment. This not only minimizes the risk of accidents but also enhances overall efficiency and productivity.
Community-Friendly Practices:
Dumpster rentals contribute to a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing community. Whether you're a homeowner, business owner, or event organizer, incorporating proper waste management practices through dumpster rentals reflects positively on the community. It shows a commitment to maintaining a clean and attractive environment for everyone.
Conclusion:
Dumpster rentals in Lubbock, TX, offer a practical and efficient solution for managing waste across various projects. From the convenience and cost-effectiveness to environmental responsibility and enhanced safety, the benefits are substantial. When embarking on your next project in Lubbock, consider the advantages of partnering with a reliable dumpster rental service to streamline your waste management process and contribute to a cleaner, more organized community.

When Choey Eun Young Cho was in grad school at Ohio State University, she started collecting bananas. She bought bunch after bunch, day after day, and let the bananas pile up in her apartment, until she was eventually surrounded by them and their sickly sweet stench.
Doing so was a way of sitting with the discomfort of what the banana signified, in a derogatory sense. She had recently returned to the United States from Korea (she got her undergrad degrees from the University of Nebraska Omaha), and was feeling freshly stung with culture shock.
In the group exhibition Notes from Another Place at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, Cho’s bananas appear as bright LED icons, simplified contour line drawings of light, collapsing sign and the signified.
Nothing in this exhibition, however, is an easy read. Curated by Boryana Rusenova-Ina and Sam van Strien, the show is as slippery and abstract as language itself.
Rusenova-Ina’s two paintings here recall the formation of language through the body as the locus of both utterance and scrawl. In the center of each canvas, she paints a mouth in the process of pronouncing a certain sound, indicated by its letters: “h” in one, “y” in the other. Even for someone accustomed to reading lips, it would be hard to “see” what the mouths are “saying.” Around them is evidence of another form of language learning, which is equally indiscernible: early-childhood pre-writing scribbles that have been faithfully copied by Rusenova-Ina in charcoal and acrylic.
The curatorial conceit of the exhibition considers ideas of dislocation and alienation, of feeling “out of place.” For the Dutch-born van Strien, that feeling comes from the disorienting experience of the city of London, with its imposing steel and glass architecture projecting the power of unknowable systems held within — finance, government, capital. In his works, the facades of such buildings are, too, faithfully copied — as collages of the individual panes of glass on a skyscraper, or photo-engraved plates of corporate plazas — yet in the process they become mutable and warped.
The “feeling” of dislocation comes to the fore in Joonhong Min’s work, where an overwrought architecture takes over bodies situated in dizzying panels of overly patterned Escher-like checkerboard forms in monochromatic sets of reds, teals, and greens. These panels, for the artist, recall the isolation of pandemic-time online space — an experience of social and physical disconnection that all of us, even those who have never found themselves in “another place,” can relate to.
Hannah Parrett’s work, in cyan, turquoise, and mint hues that never veer fully toward blue or green, pops against LHUCA’s architecturally mandated firehouse-red main gallery wall. Here the color positively vibrates. Parrett’s paintings, like their colors, defy easy categorization or identification: they are paintings and assemblages and also carvings and soft sculpture. Their unnamable shapes flap and double over; with dowels stuck in them, they’re piercing yet homely, almost inviting you to hang your coat on them in a kind of slapstick moment of confusion.
Unnamable forms and ineffable structures, like moments of anomia, recur and stutter throughout the show. Paintings by Cho contain illegible insignia that appear to have been half erased, like a moment of déjà vu just about to vanish into an uneasy feeling. The buildings in Van Strien’s photoengraved plates seem filmy and gauzelike, as behind a veil of incomprehension. Their prints appear like ghosts on the other side of the gallery.
Notes from Another Place is an unusually international, well-traveled show to find in Lubbock, Texas. Both born in Korea, Cho is based in Seoul and Min is in London. Van Strien was born in Delft, lived in the UK, and is now based in Durham, North Carolina. Parrett was born and raised in rural South Dakota and now lives in Cincinnati. Rusenova-Ina is from Bulgaria, attended university in Scotland and Ohio, and is now a professor of painting at Texas Tech, here in Lubbock.
The exhibition brings together these five artists to reflect “on the politics, aesthetics, and experience of belonging.” Right now, the question of who belongs where is a loaded gun. The movements of these artists from city to city come mostly unhindered — matters of choice or opportunity — but for many people around the world, moving to “another place” is a matter of survival.
Matters of language, of power, of culture, of learning new ways while holding on to what’s gone — these are what diasporic populations everywhere must contend with. In Notes from Another Place, these are attempts to give form to such ineffable experiences of dislocation, of finding oneself, somewhere else.
So, ask yourself, where are you right now? And what right do you have to be here, now?
Notes from Another Place is on view at LHUCA, Lubbock through November 25, 2023.

Dental anxiety is a common issue among children, causing fear and stress before and during dental visits. As a parent, witnessing your child's anxiety can be distressing. However, it is essential to address dental anxiety in children to ensure they receive the oral care they need for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Dentists in Lubbock TX understand the challenges associated with dental anxiety in young patients and are dedicated to providing a stress-free and comfortable experience. In this blog, we will explore effective strategies to address dental anxiety in children and create a positive environment for dental visits with dentists in Lubbock TX.
1. Choose a Pediatric Dentist in Lubbock TX
Selecting a pediatric dentist in Lubbock TX is the first step in addressing dental anxiety in children. Pediatric dentists specialize in caring for young patients and creating a child-friendly environment. Their training and experience enable them to handle dental anxiety with patience and compassion.
2. Start Early: Introduce the Dentist Positively
Introduce the concept of the dentist to your child at an early age. Use positive language to describe the dentist as a friendly and caring professional who helps keep their teeth healthy and strong. Reading children's books about dental visits and watching videos can help familiarize them with the dental environment.
3. Role-Play Dental Visits at Home
Role-playing dental visits at home can help ease dental anxiety. Pretend to be the dentist, and let your child play the patient. Use a toothbrush to "examine" their teeth gently. This activity can make the idea of visiting the dentist feel less intimidating.
4. Communication and Reassurance
Clear communication and reassurance are essential in addressing dental anxiety. Talk to your child about their feelings and concerns regarding the dentist. Offer reassurance that you will be there with them during the visit and that everything will be okay.
5. Visit the Dental Office in Advance
If possible, visit the dental office in advance with your child. This visit allows them to see the dental environment, meet the dental team, and become familiar with the setting before their actual appointment. Many dentists in Lubbock TX offer pre-visit tours for young patients.
6. Use Positive Reinforcement
Positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool in addressing dental anxiety. Praise your child for their bravery and cooperation during dental visits. Consider offering a small reward after their appointment as a positive incentive.
7. Child-Friendly Distractions
Child-friendly distractions, such as toys, books, or videos, can help redirect your child's focus during the dental visit. Many dentists in Lubbock TX have kid-friendly waiting areas equipped with entertainment options for young patients.
8. Child-Centered Approach
Dentists in Lubbock TX adopt a child-centered approach to dental care, ensuring that children feel comfortable and involved in the process. Allowing children to ask questions and express their preferences during the visit can empower them and reduce anxiety.
9. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and mild sedative used to help children relax during dental procedures. Dentists in Lubbock TX may offer nitrous oxide for anxious patients to create a more comfortable experience.
10. Distraction Techniques During Procedures
During dental procedures, distraction techniques can help alleviate anxiety. Some dentists in Lubbock TX use interactive distractions, such as telling stories or playing music, to divert the child's attention from the procedure.
11. Slow and Gradual Approach
For children with severe dental anxiety, a slow and gradual approach may be necessary. Dentists in Lubbock TX understand the importance of taking small steps to build trust and confidence with the child.
12. Encouraging a Positive Mindset
Promote a positive mindset towards dental visits by focusing on the benefits of oral health and the importance of regular dental care. Emphasize that dentists in Lubbock TX are here to help and support their oral health journey.
Conclusion
Addressing dental anxiety in children is crucial for their oral health and overall well-being. With the support and expertise of dentists in Lubbock TX, dental visits can become stress-free and even enjoyable experiences for young patients. By choosing a pediatric dentist, introducing the dentist positively, using role-playing, and maintaining open communication, parents can help alleviate dental anxiety in their children. Visiting the dental office in advance, offering positive reinforcement, and incorporating child-friendly distractions during visits can further contribute to a positive dental experience. Dentists in Lubbock TX adopt child-centered approaches, use sedation techniques like nitrous oxide, and implement distraction techniques to ensure a comfortable and anxiety-free dental experience. Lubbock housing market shows signs of cooling, experts say
The Lubbock, Texas housing market may be loosening up soon after several years of being tight. This news comes from KCBD and is a sign of hope for the local area's real estate industry! However, when it comes to Lubbock's housing market, realtors face a complicated situation. Thankfully though, compared to the tightness experienced earlier this year and last summer, buyers now have an easier time obtaining a house in certain respects. We may have entered a new era in the housing market and are approaching normalcy. “We still are just on the side of a seller’s market but heading more into a balanced market,” Donna Sue Clements, president-elect of the Lubbock Association of Realtors, said. Rising interest rates could be a contributing factor to the precarious balancing act many businesses now face. Homebuyers may not have the same buying power, and sellers might be making less than expected in return. The housing market in the Lubbock area is experiencing a high demand, with an inventory of 1.9 months - meaning that homes are selling faster than they can be listed! “(That means) if we don’t allow any other houses to be listed and we go through -- we’ve got 1.9 months to sell the inventory that we have,” Clements said. “And then we would run out of houses to sell.” However, the figure is still restricted. Furthermore, the rapid construction of new buildings has contributed significantly to the recent spike in inventory. “I always tell people, today is the cheapest time to build or buy,” Keith Toogood, president of the West Texas Home Builders Association and area builder, said. In recent weeks, Lubbock has been graced with the presence of two noteworthy companies. Investing in new construction and boosting the existing housing stock is an effective way to ease our current real estate woes. Of course, constructing a house requires more resources than buying one already built; however, it's worth it for those that can afford it. “If you look up at five years from now or two years from now, prices are going to be higher than they are today,” Toogood said. “Prices will historically increase, but so will value.” Consequently, home builders and realtors remain hopeful that the trajectory towards normalcy will continue in its current direction. “We are prepared for that,” said Clements, “we’ve got the availability.”
