GPF Torino 22 - Loena Hendrickx
Elements:
3F (!!) | 2A | CCoS4 | 3Lz<3T< (looked clean live, much worse under review) | StSq4 (!!!) | FCS 4 | LS4 (really great spin, but could lose a level under review due to vertical ice coverage)
Program: Sí, Mamá, Mi Gente
Gosh, Loena really just laid that down didn't she ? Every element was completely unquestionable. She was so on top of her blades, and her musicality and pop was just *chefs kiss*. She was on FIRE and left no question that she is THAT girl.
However, it was obvious she came here to do a job. Her energy, choreography, power, speed and depth of edge didn't suffer at all, however her facials and "performance" was not nearly up to her standards. After the review, her face leaving the ice made sense because she could tell she underrotated her combo, but it was still a stellar program despite.
Score: 74.24 (they definitely did call the combo due to that tech score, but this high of a score does show exactly what kind of quality program she gave otherwise. Should be at least a 78 if not into the 80s without the combo) into 2nd.

Also, can we appreciate how split the judges were in terms of her PCS scores? And honestly for once, I think it’s valid since there are only 3 categories instead of 6 now. Because first off, this was some great skating, and her musicality, attention to detail and power were great. But, it wasn’t fully clean and she was very focused and not in the performance compared to her usual energy today.

Alright so. That End of Dragons first opinion post. [takes a deep breath]
I'll make it as spoiler free as possible but obviously I'll be talking a liiiitttle bit about the maps.
TL;DR for anyone who doesn't care about the details under the cut:
I loved pretty much every moment of it. Probably the highest quality expansion we've had so far. Do I like it better than Heart of Thorns? The answer is a very clear I don't know. Ask me in 6 months or so. Hope that helps.
Alright here we go:
I did a similar post when we finished Path of Fire back then, and it was a bit of a comparison fest between PoF and HoT, and.. I wish I could *not* make this post that way too, but.. in the end I'll have to compare the expansions. It is how it is.
I'll try to keep it short (You all know I can't.) Let's part this into different sections.
And let's start with the story:
As I said before, this is probably the highest quality content we've gotten for the game so far and that goes especially for the story. The story was exciting and emotional, the pacing was pretty good and every single instance felt polished and fun. I already said it some days ago, but one of these instances was probably my favourite instance ever in the game. The newly introduced cast was really strong and immediately made you care about them - and our already established characters got some interesting screen time and character development too. As much as I love the feeling of dread and urgency that HoT's (admittedly not flawless) story had - and I don't think anything in this game can ever replicate that special atmosphere for me - gotta give that point to EoD here. Y'all also know I'm biased for certain plot points they brought up during EoD.
The maps!
I've only 100% completed the first two maps so far and done about 60/70% of the other two.. and clearly haven't seen all the little details that you can discover beyond the "tracked" map completion. Buuuut... I can already tell you very certainly that neither Tangled Depths nor Verdant Brink have been dethroned. That being said I absolutely adore especially New Kaineng City. While not quite as strong, the closest I got to that Ley Line Confluence discovery "oooooh...." effect was definitely on that map, during night time. The jumping puzzle there is also quite lovely! It was a nice tour through a rather eerie section of the map.
I think Dragon's End isn't quite as strong as the other three maps, but.. it serves its purpose as a large scale meta map. That being said, Dragon's Stand has the same purpose and is still more interesting to explore. That's fine though. Pretty sure I like all four maps better than any of the PoF maps (not including LS4). Maybe Desolation would make the cut above Dragon's End.
The Soundtrack............
Ooooh boy y'all know I could make a 10k words essay just on that point alone so I'll try to keep it as short as possible.
1. Like the story, incredibly polished high quality content. I've watched the composing livestream and it's incredible how much attention to detail, work, and also respect for the Korean culture has gone into the music. I don't even think I have to mention how this OST knocks the PoF one straight out of the stratosphere.
2. Can't wait until the full 8 hours (not just the official 2 hours of songs) are up on the internet because at least one of my favs seems to be missing from the officially released soundtrack.
3. Re: that ask from the HoT OST conoisseur from some days ago.. It's still the HoT OST for me. Not by much, really, because again the quality is absolutely impeccable, but there's that little something in the atmosphere of the HoT songs that still stands out. That said, there are absolutely quite a handful of songs in EoD I'd rate above some songs from HoT. There really isn't much in between those two soundtracks. If the final battle songs have to go at each other tho? Mordremoth does the race for me (the instanced fight that is. EoD's final battle song easily wipes the floor with the Mouth of Mordremoth theme). Either way both are incredible, but HoT makes the cut overall, with IBS as a very close follow-up to EoD.
General gameplay, metas
I love that really weird decision to finally give us actual ingame information on break bars and combo fields after YEARS. No really, love it. Especially liked that the story at some point forced you to use combo fields, something that has seemingly never mattered before. As an otherwise useless druid (but with a bunch of combo fields and cc!) that was pretty cool.
As for the metas, I can't really judge them so well yet. I've participated (partly..?) in the Kaineng one, as well as the big Echovald boss, and the infamous Dragon's End meta. I did like all of them a lot, but it's hard to tell how they'll fare in the long run. None of these is what 2015-2017 Tarir was to me, but uh.. ..that was special, let's not bring that up now.
OVERALL......
EoD feels like they took the exciting parts of HoT and the polish of PoF and made one ultimate expansion out of it. Especially during the story I had so many "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" moments (that's not a word but you get the feeling I'm sure).
I've been having a blast every single moment spent with the expansion so far.
#uuuuuuuuuuh that's all i can think of right now probably forgot half of the stuff thats important#budgie plays gw2

1 & 6 for Laighe for the angst asks!
You’re enabling me SO HEAVILY by giving me Laighe rn u don’t even know bro let’s do this!!!
1. What’s one experience your character had that made them very afraid?
When she reached the Maguuma Jungle and saw the wreckage of the Pact. An entire fleet, much larger than the one to take down Zhaitan, decimated. And partially from the inside out by her own brothers and sisters. She was shaken and lost for several hours before she could really get started on a rescue attempt.
6. Have they ever committed a crime, or something they felt was wrong? What was it?
While she’s never committed any legal crimes, there are things she’s done which her gut told her was the wrong choice and that uncertainty still haunts her nightmares. Those include (heads up for HoT and LS4 spoilers here): Killing Trahearne, killing Kralkatorrik, and placing a dragon that’s hardly an adolescent on the front lines to carry the weight of the world’s magical stability.
#writing: laighe#thanks so much for the ask!#laighe is who I want to talk about most but I feel like I'm focusing on her too much lol#which is why I'm tickled that I got an ask for her when I figured y'all were likely getting tired of her sad story#Anonymous

Got 6 humans now! (5 in game)
First is Tyir! His in-game name is Itiyr but I'm not fond of it so I'm gonna see if I can rename him with a proper lastname eventually. He's one of my human commanders and he's a very good hero lad. Anxious but trying his best with a good heart. His model is a tad bit more baby-faces than I intended.
This is Yashir Shahd! He's Tyir's boyfriend and loyal partner since Seraph/Vigil years. He's of Elonian descent with his mother having fled from Elona (and dying when he was young). He drew up as a street kid so despite being a warrior, he acts a bit thiefy and steals gold from bosses he hates and bread he finds good. Very cautious but loyal.
Kou Harumitsu
He's a Canthan Engineer who I've set as Yao's friend since Jade Brotherhood times. While he doesn't work exclusively for Xunlai Jade, he's got a permit to work with their tech and works as an engineer in New Kaineng. The clothes he's wearing there are combat garb and not ones he wears for work. His past is unclear but he handpicked his own name because he liked how three different names/nicknames sounded and decided to combine them into a full name for himself. (Kou, Haru, Mitsu) He also has a pet raven that follows him everywhere.
Hal Hutcherson
They grew up in the slums of Divinity's Reach before being taken in by a friendly innkeeper and engineer duo of best friends. Given the opportunity to live without having to worry about food or being picked on by bigger kids, they learned engineering and found particular interest in gyros, eventually joining the Pact as an engineer. They also got adopted by the engineer who mentored them! Also inseparable from their best friend/adopted sister and the two's personality quirks have rubbed off on each other over the years.
Melly Danzeisen
Best friend and adopted sister of Hal. She was raised by a family friend while her parents worked outside of the city, and as such doesn't have the greatest relationship with her parents due to being distant from them. Also disliked her birth name and goes by her favorite nickname. Growing up with Hal, Melly had a frequent interest in being the rowdy kid, often getting into fistfights for bets and picking up how to use a knife to fight. While she doesn't go about having brawls in the streets anymore, she's vowed to use her weapons to protect her best friend. Despite being a thief jobclass, she had Hal teach her the basics of working on machinery in order to also join the Pact as an engineer and work together with them.

(Left to right: Melly, Elliam, and Hal in my chibi style) Left Pic has the three Pact Engineers during PoF/LS4. Right pic is of Elliam during base game events/HoT
Last one's an OC who doesn't exist in-game because I'm not satisfied with the model faces available for him.
Elliam (no last name decided as of now)
Elliam's the dearheart of one of my twin commanders, Caertryn. He joined the Vigil when the Pact was about to be formed, inspired by the feats of the Commanders. He ends up managing to date one of them and the two are still happily together despite everything Tyria's been through. While he started out as a recruit during the progress onto Orr/Zhaitan, by the time PoF and LS4 roll around, he's the captain of his own engineering crew which includes Melly and Hal.
I'm kinda surprised I have so many human OCs now. I've been so heavily focused on Sylvari haha.

My main did not take it well.
No one knew they were together so he had to hold in his emotions while everyone was there. Asked them to leave him be for a moment so he could privately mourn the Marshal's death. He pretty much immediately broke down once they left. Canach (who he formed a brotherly bond with during the jungle ad a fellow sylvari) discovered him but kept his secret and never asked for an explanation. And he just kinda carried this weight without telling anyone for yhe next few years. Absolutely shattered him. Stopped visiting the Grove as it hurt to see the statue.
There's more factors at play here but he loses his memories at the end of LS4 and when he wakes up, he's lost all his memories after Zhaitan's death/celebration. Which is about a good 6-7 years of memories right there. He realizes he's lost his memories bc 1) he doesn't recognize most of the people he's with and 2) the number of journals he has doesn't add up to the timespan gone by (he picked up daily journalling as a habit from Trahearne but mostly dropped it after his death).
As of now with post-EOD, he's reshaped his identity as the Commander so he's more stable now but he's definitely still extremely hurt from it. When he picks up hints that Yao kinda fancies him (more starstruck than anything but still a crush), he feels bad but has to turn them down which they do take amicably thankfully. Yao's become a good friend of his now and they offer a listening ear to his thoughts and musings often. He's come to terms with the fact that he's unable to move on.
There's way more details at play here and it's way more elaborate than how I explained it but that's the simple gist I can break it down into without ending up with a 10 page essay lmao
Wanna hear. If your Commander was in love/very close to Trahearne how did they react to having to kill him? What did they do after? How did they cope?

Contributor Spotlight #18: Roksiel
Today, we’re delighted to introduce our 18th contributor spotlight, featuring another one of our artists: @roksiel. This Romanian artist has been producing fan works for @GuildWars2 since starting the game over two years ago, even having been featured in one of the official community showcases.
With a favorite god of Grenth, it’s no surprise that their favorite class is the necromancer, and that their favorite NPC is the dry-humored Canach. Their favorite maps were the ones in LS3 (Ember Bay, specifically), so we hope the new ones in LS4 (out yesterday) also are to their liking!
They’ve been great to work with for the zine, and the mod team has really enjoyed their attention to detail & beautiful compositions.
They’re available for commission as well: contact them on Tumblr at @roksiel, Twitter, or DeviantArt.

What If GM Built a Chevrolet Blazer SS With a Corvette Engine?
The Chevrolet Blazer is a talented, well-rounded crossover. The Camaro of SUVs, as we’ve dubbed it, has sporty looks and an aggressive demeanor—especially in sleek RS guise. We recently spent some time in the 2020 Blazer RS and came away impressed with its fresh interior and competence on the road, but we also think there’s room for a little bit more.
On the road, the Blazer RS felt like a willing partner and it was capable enough to handle whatever I threw at it—within reason, of course. I even thought it could handle a swoopy mountain pass if it really had to. Even though it doesn’t have the outright power to demolish SUV lap records, we think the hypothetical Blazer SS could be the X3M fighter Chevrolet never knew it wanted to build.
Thanks to the 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque provided by its 3.6-liter V-6, the Blazer RS with AWD already sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and runs the quarter-mile in 14.7 seconds at 95.5 mph. That’s not bad for a 4,274-pound crossover. In our testing, it stopped from 60 mph in 126 feet, and its best figure eight lap was a respectable 27.1 seconds at 0.65 g average.
We’d like to see improvements in all of those areas for our hypothetical Blazer SS. It doesn’t even need to be its own special model, and we think something from the Chevy parts bin would work perfectly. Hear us out: A transversely mounted version of the LT1 V-8 from the outgoing C7 Corvette and current sixth-gen Camaro paired to Chevy’s latest nine-speed front-drive transaxle sounds like the perfect way to motivate a performance-oriented Blazer SS. Paddle shifters, absent from current Blazers, would be a must.
Channeling all of that power would require Chevrolet’s best front-drive-based all-wheel drive system, hardened to handle the torque. We’d like to hope Chevrolet would spring for a fancier system like the electronically controlled center diff in the Subaru WRX STI or an on-demand twin-clutch rear axle like a Ford Focus RS, capable of torque vectoring and creating a rear torque bias.
Realistically, though, Chevrolet doesn’t have any such system in its arsenal and would need to spend substantial money to develop one. An on-demand coupling is probably the most likely as it would improve fuel economy, but we think a vehicle like this ought to have full-time all-wheel drive, so we’d prefer a helical center differential at minimum with a fixed front-rear torque split.
This will help the Blazer feel more characterful, and when combined with brake-based torque vectoring (limited-slip differentials are also expensive) will help give it much better traction out of corners. We also wouldn’t mind seeing slightly wider front and rear track widths to give better overall grip, and maybe a few tweaks to the body—like quad exhausts and an even more aggressive front end.
Pair all of that with some other performance goodies like bigger brakes, uprated suspension components, lighter wheels, and stickier tires and you’ve got yourself a real performance machine. All of this would help dial out some of the understeer the Blazer suffers from when you’re really pushing it, and the power from the V-8 would make it significantly quicker than the RS in a straight line.
Even though this idea is born entirely of a hypothetical conversation I was having with fellow editors Alex Nishimoto and Zach Gale, Nishimoto pointed out there is some historical precedent here. Remember the Chevrolet Impala SS? In 2006, Chevy took an LS-series V-8 (a 5.3-liter version dubbed the LS4) and stuck it sideways under the hood of its front-wheel-drive family sedan. Even though it wasn’t an SUV, the concept of taking an ordinary family car and dropping in a V-8 (flipped 90 degrees) is something Chevrolet has clearly explored before. The all-aluminum LS4 made 303 hp and 323 lb-ft of torque, and turned the sedate-looking Impala (along with its Monte Carlo SS and Pontiac Grand Prix GXP platform mates) into a real sleeper. According to our colleagues at Hot Rod, the LS4 used a unique low-profile accessory system with a flattened water pump to accomodate the unusual transverse application. It also featured a relocated starter, unique intake manifold, GM’s “Metric” bellhousing pattern, and a slightly shorter crankshaft.
Performance SUVs aren’t some ridiculous fantasy, either. Even since the original X5 M sparked the birth of the segment more than a decade ago, performance SUVs have been coming thick and fast. Mercedes Benz currently offers the GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS with high-powered AMG engines—there are six different variants in total. The Germans currently have a stranglehold on the segment, though.
Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes all make some of the fastest SUVs in the world. Outside of the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus (both of which hail from companies owned by Volkswagen), those four brands have little in the way of competition. But America’s appetite for the big people carriers doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
Ford offers semi-sporty ST versions of both the Explorer and Edge SUVs, too. However, it must be said they’re not full-on, hardcore performance machines and generally aren’t compared to the Germans when it comes to outright performance. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk gets closer, and the upcoming Dodge Durango Hellcat may as well, and with all of that in mind, a hardcore, pumped-up SUV from Chevy seems to make more sense than ever before.
Whether Chevy will execute this idea of ours is entirely up to them, but we’d love to see something faster, meaner, and more exciting from the Blazer. With its sedan offerings shrinking, the Bowtie brand could really benefit from something fast and practical in the lineup.
