Ben the Magnificent, by the numbers
(This is really just me making a handy rewatch guide) 1x04 4 (Ben, Lila, Kristen, Kristen) 1x08 1 (Lila) 1x09 1 (Andy) 1x12 1 (Lila, Lila is the one who hugs him and drags him over by the hand) 1x13 1 (Laura) 2x04 1 (Laura) 3x03 2 (Lila, twice) (Laura is the one who talks to Ben in 3x10) 4x02 1 (Laura) 4x11 2 (Lila, Ellie pretending to be Laura) 4x14 1 (All four Ls) 14 total utterances of "Ben the Magnificent", plus Lila's "you're not very magnificent lately" makes 15. 8 of them (over half) are from season 1. Lila racks up 6 of them (a little less than half), and Laura 3 (around 20%). So, it turns out that Ben's relationship with the girls isn't fully equal. Lila and Laura have a particular affinity for him. I wonder if there's a connection to my impression that Lila and Laura are the ones who tend to drive the nonstop chatter during the overlapping talking moments, whereas Lynn and Lexis tend to have more beats and non-spoken reactions (i.e. facial expressions) in their contributions to the flow. Of course, there's an element of actor improv tendency to those cases. But, it does bear out in the scripted lines that Laura is always pretty mouthy and forward with her opinions while Lila is the smooth talking liar. They are the two who coordinate on the "we put a kid from school in the toilet" joke in 3x03. Lexis and Lynn are more measured in what they say, more often asking questions or making observations than stating opinions. Interesting that it is then Lexis and Lynn who have the more spiritually-related arcs in the show. This split is then reinforced by the plausibility of Ellie-pretending-to-be-Laura spinning the future of Ben having encouraged Laura to go into cosmology.

just wanted to say that actually some of the faults of season 7 of 911 truly highlight how different tonally 911 and 911 Lone Star are and how when Tim Minear came back from Lone Star, he didn't properly adapt. The way I explain it would be 911 is more focused on the emergencies and using the emergencies to further the character's story. There will be calls related to the general arc of the characters in each episode. Each episode has a theme that both emergencies and the character arcs abide by, for example 2x04 Stuck or 4x10 Parenthood. The emergencies are used to fuel on going character plot lines that will then extend outwards through the episode.
Meanwhile Lone Star is more character driven with the emergencies happening in the background. What is happening in the emergencies doesn't necessarily relate to the characters arcs for the episode, and you are far more likely to get an episode dealing with one big emergency or a character's individual plot line rather than a thematic tie in integrating them both
In season 7 there was a noticeable lack of emergencies and the ones we did have rarely tied into a characters personal arc for the episode (the exception is Maddie's story in 7x07). Instead the emergency calls were for the most part used as comedic relief as a break from the drama. Episodes 8-10 didn't have a single real emergency call in the way we have seen it in the show. 7x06 had one in flash back, and 7x03 was just the crew ship. That is about half the season that didn't really have the 118 responding to regular emergencies we have become accustom to in the show, creating a completely different tone and flow for the show.
Additionally, this season pulled several lone star plot lines that in my opinion didn't work as well for a variety of reasons.
Off the top of my head we have:
Bobby and Athena's house burning down in revenge arson (7x09)-TK and Carlos's condo burning down in revenge arson (2x12)
Bobby going off on his own and accidentally ended up dealing with a cartel (7x08) - Owen going off on his own and dealing with a cartel (3x03)
Athena taking her gun and going to the house of the man she believes killed Bobby and threatening to shoot him(7x10)- Carlos taking his gun going to the house of the man he believed killed his father and threatening to shoot him (4x18)
Bobby's heart attack (7x09) -Paul's heart attack (3x09) (ok this one might be a stretch)
The firehouse is taken over as a season finale by a previously disliked captain because of the actions of the current captain (7x10 911 2x14 LS)
Some of those may be stretches but my point being is they all felt too familiar as a plot point because they had been done similarly on Lone Star prior.
This doesn't mean that Tim Minear is bad show runner by any means, it just means he hasn't readapted to the overall structure of the stories we get in 911 and that 911 and 911 Lone Star despite being set in the same universe and one being a spin off of the other are fundamentally different shows with very different structures.
This also doesn't mean that one show is better than the other or has a more successful structure, it just means they are fundamentally different shows and changing the the flow of a show several seasons in will always feel a bit jarring.

Hi Anne!
For Nice Ask Day, I want to ask you; what is your personal favorite head-canon for 911 LS. Could be about the show as a whole, a personal characteristic, specifically Tarlos, anything!
I spend the majority of my free time thinking about this show, yet for some reason when someone asks me for a headcanon, I forget everything I've ever thought about the show and the characters 😂
One I've been thinking about recently, so it comes to mind more readily, is about breakup era. I've seen some people assume that Carlos tried to text/call TK for a while after they broke up, but I adamantly don't think he did. Carlos is such an avoider of conflict and difficult conversations and he made it clear from season 1 that he didn't want to chase TK. When they fight in 2x04, Carlos just waits for TK to come back to him and make up. I think he acted similarly when the break up happened. I also think this makes a lot of sense with how TK acted. I'm certain that once TK's anger cleared a little bit, he immediately regretted ending things. If Carlos had been texting and calling and trying to get TK back, I just don't think TK would have ignored him for long. But if Carlos never reached out, I can absolutely see TK being afraid that he ruined things and that Carlos hated him and being terrified of reaching out himself because being rejected by Carlos would absolutely destroy him.
This makes me wonder how Carlos would act now in a similar situation. I don't see TK running or ending things at this point, but if when they fight in the future, will Carlos still fall into these patterns? To a certain extent, he probably will have a tendency to continue his avoidance because that's just his personality, but I'd like to think he's working on it/growing a bit in that area. I think I would really like to see Carlos showing some growth in this way on the show!

I hope the lack of Carlos/Gabriel interaction is by design and that, if we don’t get an acknowledgment of the gap before the wedding, that we get a really good episode focused on that in the future.
No, I lied. I want both. Give me the moment and the episode.
LS has a pretty terrible record of giving Carlos things to do in season finales, so I'm in expect-the-worst-hope-for-the-best mode with the wedding episodes. I hope he'll get something to do other than wear a nice tux and marry TK but I'm not expecting him to have his own storyline in the last two episodes.
There's a chance that we will get a scene between Carlos and his parents, because his relationship with them has been the other significant story arc he's had outside his relationship with TK. Having them show their love and support on his wedding day would certainly bring a nice sense of closure to a storyline that has run over the past three seasons.
But I think that the relationship between Carlos and Gabriel, or the difficulties in their relationship go beyond the lack of support Carlos got when he came out. Carlos didn't feel Gabriel approved of his career choice, he says his fear of being a parent is because he doesn't have a great relationship with Gabriel. Carlos knows that Gabriel loves him and supports his relationship with TK, and they are in a much better place than where they were when we first met Gabriel back in 2x04 but there's a lot left to be explored and hopefully resolved between them.
I think it's pretty realistic that not everything is resolved and tied up in a neat bow just in time for the fairytale wedding, and it gives plenty of scope to explore in the future. The writers introduced the kids question because they are planning ahead. No doubt, the question of whether or not The Boys have children will rear it's head again in future seasons and I'm hopeful that means they intend to explore Carlos's fears and his relationship with his father then.
I want to see a moment between Carlos and his parents during the wedding episodes but I don't think the whole thing can, or should, be resolved then. It's something that needs more time to develop, but they only way to do that is for Gabriel to have scenes with Carlos instead of Owen.

hello d! nice ask week question for you - as a new member of the fandom, how did you come across 911ls? also, what inspired you to start writing fic? what's your favourite thing about writing fic and the thing you find most challenging? 💜
Hi Lola! Thank you for the question 💗 Sorry for answering this so late!
How did you come across 911 LS: Answered here 😀
What inspired you to start writing fic: Well first off the last time I had written fanfic was when I was like 15 writing about (redacted) 🤫 It was only a couple fics and definitely nothing good 😂 thankfully I had the sense to delete them from existence all those years ago 😅 I’ve written other things since then but not fanfic. Hence why I was so nervous to share my first bits of Tarlos writing. Now as for starting to write Tarlos: My inspiration was just the show and TK and Carlos themselves. Their story is just so beautiful, and I really connected with aspects of each of their characters. And then just reading fic again in general is inspiring me. So many talented people crafting their own stories and it just makes me eager to join the fun and contribute. I have a need to put them in even more situations 😂 I’ve been finding inspiration pretty easily at the moment. The way my brain works, I hear a lyric or see a random picture, anything as simple as that and I’m brimming with ideas. My number one thing I found inspiration in is literally just words. I’ll be reading a fic and someone uses the word ‘savour’ or ‘speechless’ and bam I’m thinking and I have to exit the fic tab and go start writing before I lose my idea. A few WIPs started from something as random as that. As an example the colleagues AU I’m working on all started from twos things: Someone [that may or may not be you and Rae] using the word ‘professional’ in their fic, which of course made me think of TK saying the words ‘what we did this morning was very unprofessional’ in that 2x04 scene. I went hmm professional? = work = colleagues = hookup in the office and so forth 😂 I now have 2 separate office based WIPs in the works because some of the scenes I’m writing aren’t working with the current plot so they’ve been shifted into a new doc haha. But I’m serious. Other writers are the reason I’m even attempting fic again no rules in breakable heaven by @strandnreyes and un(professional) services by yourself and @rmd-writes got my brain ticking and really gave me a kick up the butt to actually try write anything even half as good as those💗💗💗
What’s your favourite thing about writing fic: The strories you get to explore. Getting to have fun with the characters we know and love. Being able to expand on scenes and missing moments in canon, and weave my own intricate story whilst still making it feel faithful to them. Thinking up an AU and put them in whatever environment I feel like, I am really loving it atm. When I actually have the time to write anyway, because I certainly have not this week 😅
What you find the most challenging about writing fic: Sort of mentioned above because it’s a favourite and also challenging. But when crafting my own story, specifically an AU, trying to make them feel authentic to the characters we see on the show. Whilst also being fully fleshed characters in their own right in the little universe I’ve created. It’s got me like ‘would he say that? would he think that? would he do that?’ even in this made up scenario. And if there’s one thing I’m gonna do, it’s overthink 😂

Didn't LS Season 2 have The Reyes interacting with both TK and Carlos? Should've been the place to drop the hint by Carlos' parents saying "Have you told your boyfriend the truth?"
I've been thinking about this specific message for a bit today and yeah, let's address something. I'm sure we all understand the "goal" with introducing Carlos's parents was to show the audience what unconditional love and acceptance looks like from parent to child, and how you can't *always* assume to know what someone else is feeling - communication is key. But. If the secret marriage was meant to be a plot point from the start (which I *do* believe, I just think Tim got distracted, lazy, what have you), the first episode with the Reyes fam (2x04) could have had them hearing their son was public with a bf, from TK "by accident" (because he has no clue what Carlos has been saying) and looking like 🤨 but also 😶, so then the assumption could be that they're not quite on board with their son's life, right? and the fight between Tarlos is the same, ie "You never told them we were together???" And then Carlos says the same kinda stuff about trying to not "rub their noses in it" and how he struggled with feeling accepted by them after coming out. So you'd have roughly the same story line, with one tweak, and while the audience believes the awkwardness was due to homophobia on the parents part, cut to s4 and...ooooh. A serious boyfriend was a surprise because Carlos is still (legally) committed to someone else - a woman! And TK appeared to know nothing about it!

T.K (accidentally) met mis padres! What an incredible pleasure and humbling experience it was to work alongside Benito Martinez and Roxana Brusso. I have watched these two actors over the years excel at their craft without ever suspecting I would also be acting with them one day. — Also, super shoutout to @sanaahamri for directing last night’s EP and bringing her A+ Game. Collaborating with you was a sincere pleasure 👑

i know owen isnt everyone's fav character but i kinda hope they stick with the '"i'm invincible" mindset. i remember when aos had some characters in the same mindset in s5 and it lead to some really interesting character choices and behaviors. this mixed w owen's severe survivor's guilt he disclosed in the crossover could be v interesting
