Imagine if Sonic Team made a game similar to the storybook games, but where Sonic enters a classic movie instead. Which movies would you like to see used? Let's say one public domain movie and one copyrighted movie.
Something I drew many many years ago, we'll say around 2009 or 2010, was the idea that Sonic would enter a western.
Tumblr media
It was based on two things:
I think Sonic in cowboy boots is a fun mental image
A lasso could be more fun than a sword.
I didn't have any specific western in mind or even any specific storybook in mind, I was just spitballing based on vibes alone. But Sonic the Hedgehog as "The Man with No Name" could be interesting.
Like right away I imagine Sonic is getting suspicious why he keeps getting transported into all these stories so he refuses to give his name in this one, and thus he earns that title and tries to feel his way around and figure out what's going on.
Unfortunately I am not well versed in public domain movies, outside of the usual suspects: Night of the Living Dead, House on Haunted Hill, Carnival of Souls, etc. I know there's a lot of silent-era (and early "talkies") comedy that's public domain now, too. But I dunno how well Sonic would fit there.
For a moment I realized those old classic Popeye cartoons are public domain, including the one where he fights Sinbad, but we already had Sinbad in Secret Rings. Which is a shame, because Sinbad goes on a lot of adventures and it would adapt into a game easily.
The movie itself isn't public domain, but Sonic in Clash of the Titans would be fun. That's my brain making a leap because The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad had special effects by Ray Harryhausen, who also handled Clash of the Titans. Sonic helping Perseus and fighting greek gods would be kind of cool. His friend roster would slot in well there, too.

Can I request Second Wind - Sonic Mvt from Sonic Frontiers' The Final Horizon update?
Absolutely! How are we today, friends?
This track is wonderful and right in my wheelhouse. The intro is beautiful--I love the glittering piano and bells combination, underscored by the swelling cello lines. It's too bad that doesn't repeat later! The fingerstyle rock bass in the background is one of the driving forces of this piece, pushing rhythm when the percussion is sparse or non-existent. There are some nice lines towards the end of the loop as well! The acoustic guitar in the background during the mid section with the drum beat is such a nice touch. It feels very "Sonic" in this context--maybe not exactly the bombastic rock we're used to hearing to represent him, but this groove and vibe fits his style in this game perfectly. The key modulation is a nice touch without being too distracting as well. And the piano--the melody star of this track--has some great moments, with some angular, quick lines as a solo, as well as solid, memorable melodies.
Thanks for requesting! Requests are open!

The trend is well passed dying down but I thought I’d share my favorite Sonic Iceberg! It has a great mix of classic and modern topics and it all seems to be real, as well as not dwelling on joke topics like a lot of Icebergs tend to do. Credit to Lozicle for this amazing chart!

Evil Tom Preston breaks down why Dobson is such a shit ally and his fundamentally misunderstanding of the things he likes to rant about, specifically Dobson’s “The Problem With Apu” comic where he attributed Apu to blackface. It’s a hell of a good read and I want to thank @lozicle for bringing it to my attention.
Also, thanks for being a fan of the blog, Evil Tom. Really enjoy your work.

Asks (past few months)
Sorry, I’ve been completely burnt out most of this year. Between my exhausting day job hours and general art block/depression, I haven’t been as active as I wish to be.Apologize for not getting to these sooner. I didn’t get to your question in this one, I’ll be answering more in another group post as well as private responses (hard to keep up with 15,000+ followers!)
Thanks for understanding!
atlamilliageorama said: Any word on the prints of the FFXV models? I'm really interested in one of Gladio!
A: I actually haven’t heard from him yet. We both have busy lives, but I will keep such posted if I hear anything else!
italiangamer97 said: Say... if you ever get to making low-poly models of Freedom Planet characters, I'd think it would be interesting to see them in a style similar to Sonic The Fighters or perhaps even Sonic Rush. But would DS-ish models count as low-poly, or would that depend? Hrm... I'm half-tempted to commission you for one, but I'm not sure how to go about it...
A: I’ve never heard of Freedom Planet til now, but I’ll look it up! And yes original DS games would definitely count as low poly! And sorry, I’m not taking anymore commissions at this time, I will certainly make an announcement when I do!
gettingintimate said: I love your art! I'm knew to 3D, but what are your "rules" for keeping things low-poly, and keeping your textures looking PS1 era?
A: There are no “rules”, just ~suggestions and guidelines~ 1: Does the geometry aid in the silhouette? 2: Does a detail need to be modeled if I can easily be textured if it does not aid the silhouette?   Just some the things that I think about when modeling. And I am planning a Low Poly Video tutorial, should be ready in a few weeks!
the-mnj-crew said: Hello, I am writing to see about making a commission...I'm a Mass Dartmouth Student studying Game art and animation with a goal to make a N64/PS1 Style Game Called The Golden Gears...I was wondering if you could model the main character Flathead...Id be willing to provide model sheets if needed.
A: Sorry, I’m not taking on any commissions at this time. I’m completely burnt out/art block. I will announce when I take them again. Thanks for understanding!
automata-enthusiast said: Can you lay out your general process for modeling a humanoid given a drawn reference? I've been looking for a good tutorial on the style of modeling you do (PS1/N64 inspired) and have yet to find anything decent.
A: You are in luck: I’m making a low poly tutorial video detailing my process! It should be ready in a few weeks! Please be patient!
storm-of-lightning said: A bit of criticism for the Bayonetta model,. The feet look a little to long. Maybe shorten them a bit. It looks strange to me, but you change it only if you feel like it
A: I was not aiming for exact 1 to 1 likeness of the in character, but more-so how she *might* have appeared 20 years ago, and for that I often change/toy around with proportions. But thank you for your critique, I’ll keep such in mind going forward!
quasahi said: Hey! Do you have perhaps a little reference picture of hair unwrapping? I can not for the life of me figure out how to unwrap low poly "clay" hair
A: I’m making a low poly tutorial video detailing my process! Heads hands, body, hair etc, I will be going over how I do all of the above! Please be patient and thans for asking!
lozicle said: Hello, I was just wondering if you are open to commissions at the moment.
A: Sorry, completely burnt out/art block at the moment. I’ll announce when I’m open for commissions again. Thanks for understanding!
the-mnj-crew said: Do you still do low poly commissions? For N64 style models?
A: Not at this time, burnt out and in a serious art block. Sorry
duchessvonkibble said: Omg! Your models are perf it wasn't as hard to find somebody that makes low poly models as commissions as I thought! Ummm so can I commission something from you pretty please :3 I really don't know how it works do i give you my email address? Please respond doe~~~
A: Sorry, I’m not taking commissions at this time. I’m seriously burnt out plus a serious art block. Sorry!
aura547 said: Have you ever tried to recreate older game models (N64 mario, ps1 crash, etc.) just for fun?
A: I have, but I find more fun to do things I did not exist back then, as there is more challenge in figuring out how newer characters might have looked back then. I did do Lara Croft from Tomb Raider (2013) and a many of the Smash Bros characters!
Thanks for understanding everyone!

The one on the left is a yet to be collected commission (I'm looking at you @lozicle 😋) The big fella on the right is currently for sale, the cost of my son's looming birthday have forced me to knock the price down to hasten the sale. What do you think the odds are that Sonic will be able to curl into a ball to roll down hills in Frontiers?
I would instinctively say no, because Sonic's ability to roll has been something they've historically misunderstood, but we have the rumored "SpinCycle" ability, so I guess rolling could play a much bigger role in this game, sure.
I still don't expect it to feel right.

How about Theme of Starfall Islands from Sonic Frontiers?
Good evening, all! Excited to get into this soundtrack...time to break out the orchestra!
The mood of the open zones in this whole soundtrack is so tangible, so palpable, and this track showcases it well. The piano and strings together with the epic percussion and dash of synths portray this broad landscape trapped under a cyber lock very well. As the piece moves forward, it gains a motion without needing heavy or fast percussion, with the repeated piano line creating a churn of motion. The cello solo toward the middle of the piece is gorgeous--haunting and lonely, even as it stretches to the higher part of its range. I love the repetition in the piece too, it really lets you get lost in it, like bobbing in ocean waves. And then it all strips down for the piano, before gaining that "cinematic trailer" feel toward the end. I would love to play this in an orchestra! (If I played strings that is...an arrangement for wind ensemble though? How cool would that be?)
