Hi! For posterity, I’d like to say that I’m a cringe little baby boy who hasn’t really used ffn for anything but LOZ fix’s, which are a whole different story. I’d like to check out some of the older works, but I’d like to be sure of what I’m reading. If you don’t mind, could you tell me about a couple of common ship nicknames in this fandom or ones that I should definitely know about? Role reversal? 🤔

Here's the first page of my rambles for a role reversal!

Wildflower eyes. He hasn’t forgotten them.

Wild and free-spirited, as fluid as a summer breeze, unbreakable and colorful, but frankly more green than anything. Her eyes—gods he missed them. Those ferocious emerald eyes had always watched him so curiously. Darker. Richer. Even more full of life than the grass they were sitting on.

The aftermath of the final battle lay in the remnants of blackened earth and monstrous hoof prints, but Link’s eyes haven’t wavered from the new wound that’s forming on his heroine’s forearm. She’s unusually quiet as she works; her practiced hands tending to the injury with the setting sun casting shadows behind her like a halo. With the grass stains on her tunic and the dirt on her face, with her hair cut short and face aged by another year, Link thinks she’s even prettier now than before the Calamity.

It’ll be another scar, he thinks, adding to her never-ending collection of wounds splayed out along her skin like stars in the night sky. By this thought, he tears his eyes away to look at the setting sun. It’s been forever since he’s seen it—has seen anything. Trees. Soaring birds. The colors of dusk. Anything that wasn’t malice or shackles or pain, but more than anything else, he’s so happy to see her again.

In the lush green grass of Central Hyrule, the heroine and prince sit side by side, overlooking the field where everything that they’ve been fighting for finally came to an end. Where Zelda sent her final blow into the beast of Ganon as Link sealed him away, relying on the strength that flourished within him when he finally saw her and that sword on her back. After all this time, Link kept searching through the darkness for her, watching her as she ventured across the entirety of Hyrule. It was unbearably challenging, but he did it anyway and it was worth it when Zelda’s eyes locked onto his across the field of charred grass, chest heaving from the struggle of victory, and with a hundred years and a thousand heartbreaks between them, tears fell from her cheeks and her voice trembled.

“I heard you,” she said, and started running towards him.

They clashed somewhere in the middle, the Master Sword dropping from her hand with a soft thud as her arms wrapped around his neck and his around her waist. He held onto her tightly, nose nuzzling into her hair and neck and breathing her in for the first time in a century.

Hylian Shadow - A Four Swords Role Reversal AU

Link got sick as a toddler and so his mother took him from healer to healer. But they all said he'd die.

Then she meets an evil witch that offers her a deal with a demon. It's her life in exchange for making Link powerful so he'd survive.

That deal is executed and Link is made into a Dark, thus being "powerful" enough to survive and is banned to the dark world. Meanwhile, to ensure balance, an equally young Shadow Link is turned Hylian and tossed into Hyrule, effectively switching their fates.

Young Shadow is seen as an orphan and since the orphanages are overflowing, he is sent to live in the streets, unable to remember anything from his true heritage since he's young. He's then taken in by a gang of street kids that raise him, teaching him fighting, stealing and surviving.

Slowly the orphanages clear out and the kids are picked up by knights and guards, held there separated from their makeshift family, punished for their "troublesome" past and behavior.

Shadow earns his name as "Shadow" not just because he's great at telling stories by throwing shadow puppets on the wall but also because he always, always manages to break out and slip away, as ungraspable as his namesake.

The only adult he cares about is a woman named Skirrsa, who works in a scrubby downtown pub and sometimes manages to sneak him a warm meal. While Shadow can't read, she is the one at least to teach him to count and calculate, becoming a mother figure to him.

So when the pub threatens to bankrupt and Skirrsa is in the threat of losing her job and thus her room in it where she lives, basically is in risk of losing her entire existence, Shadow starts to break into the castle to steal valuables and sell them in hope of giving her the money to help her stay afloat. He goes to the castle because he doesn't steal from people who can't afford to lose something.

It goes well a few times until he's caught by the knights and dragged to the princess, Zelda. 

She takes one good look at him and decides to declare his charges of stealing as void if he leaves what he took behind in the castle.

It then starts a sort of funky rythm, almost like a game. Shadow breaks in, steals, escapes and if he's found he'll insist to be brought to the princess who will for some reason always declare him innocent if he leaves the stuff behind.

It's a challenge he keeps doing until one day he asks why she keeps pardoning him. Her answer is quite literally that his escapades are fun and the highlight of her otherwise very boring days. Considering her excuse is boredom and not pity, he accepts it since he refuses to be pitied.

But this also makes him realize that even rich people can be very lonely, therefore he sneaks in once a week to only visit her.

Meanwhile slowly his efforts pay up and Skirrsa can even buy the pub, renovate it and bring it to new glory, even giving Shadow a room to stay in.

Everything looks up...until one day, Shadow sneaks in, only to see the princess and a bunch of other girls sneak out, only escorted by two knights, and thus he follows them discreetly.

They lead him to the Four Sword sanctuary, where they notice they've been followed by a "dark presence".

Considering himself caught, Shadow shows himself, immediately being chided by the princess for being such a risk to security, what if someone followed him while the maidens while less alarmed immediately mistrust him for the darkness he slightly still carries within...the only hint of who he really was born as.

Shadow tries to defend himself against their accusations of planning evil when suddenly the maidens start to disappear.

Then, when it's only Shadow, the two knights and the princess, Dark Link appears and takes the princess before blasting at the Four Sword before anyone can attempt to draw it. The unleashed magic turns against him and tears him into four pieces which have to flee and leave a now unconscious princess behind.

Immediately Shadow runs to her side but the knights stop him, picking the witnessed accusations of the maidens up and accuse Shadow of treason, claiming he led Dark there.

Even as Shadow tries to defend himself, he's arrested, one knight dragging him along while the other carries the princess to the castle.

The case is made public and Shadow is branded a traitor to the crown to be executed by sunset. 

When the execution is to be made, Skirrsa steps up and pleads that Shadow is innocent, that he's a good, kind soul and would never do such. Unfortunately the case is already seen as closed.

But then Zelda finally awakens and points out an ancient law that allows someone who is accused of treason to have a period of six months to prove themselves if a person close to them steps up to be held meanwhile and to be executed after six months in their stead of they haven't returned to prove their innocence.

Skirrsa offers herself as this exchange and Shadow is sent off to the impossible task to collect all the shards of the sword, reforge it, free the maidens and save Hyrule to prove he didn't betray it.

And so Shadow travels, the impossible task in such little time hanging heavily over his head. He fights for his life and Skirrsa's and collects the shards best he can. 

He defeats monsters and learns to use magic items, freeing Erune's village from the spell the adults were put under, turning them into toys for the children to play with, the children spared.

After he tries to travel to death mountain (by now two months have passed), but is attacked and knocked out. 

When he awakens, he's in the Lost Woods. Dark Vio stands over him and lists off why they're similar, offering Shadow power to revenge himself, save Skirrsa and most of all finally be cherished and cared for. Admittingly that makes the poor orphan melt and forget about his task. He's greeted with open arms as Hyrule is taken over, only Castle Town remaining somehow resistant.

They easily slot him into their by now established family and soon grow close.

Close enough in fact that Vio tells Shadow why they're doing all this. Ganon and Vaati promised them to turn them Hylian once Hyrule has been taken over. And that they'd be reunited with their biological family because unlike Shadow, Link knew he was Hylian once, his blonde hair making him an outsider in the dark world and long for family and the life he was supposed to have.

Also, they're planning to ensure that there would be a proper social system to ensure orphans like Shadow never would have to steal to survive.

Meanwhile Dark Green watches and takes care of the captured Zelda, who slowly realizes who the true heroes of Hyrule should have been. And as she starts talking proper morals into him, the duo having long debates over various topics kinships start to form.

One day Shadow is even allowed to visit her after he told the Darks how he used to visit her every week.

Zelda immediately apologizes sincerely for the mistake the biased court made but also reminds him that by now less than one month remains, otherwise Skirrsa would be killed in Shadow's place.

Severely alarmed, Shadow tells this to the Darks, who promise to bring it up to their Lords. In fact, they take Shadow with them when they go to their Lords, letting him wait outside as they go to plead their case.

Their Lords however refuse to hasten their plans of the take over of Castle Town for the sake of the life of one meagre Hylian and warn the Darks not to get attached. Instead they even order the Darks to kill Shadow, seeing him as a weakness in their goal that might cause them to hesitate, holding their wish to become Hylian again over their head.

Hearing this, Shadow feels betrayed and so he leaves to pick his journey back up to collect the sword pieces and ensure Skirrsa's survival himself.

He leaves before he can hear the Dark's outright refusal and how they get punished to death for it, later to be revived by the Dark Mirror.

And while the now hurt Shadow works to reach the goal, the Darks come back to life severely weakened, the Lord's obviously having realized their potential for treason.

Too right, because they finally understood that while Ganon and Vaati claim to have a perfect system, theirs likely will be even worse. Also, it's obvious now that none of the Lords had ever planned to return them to be Hylian.

They try to apologize and clear the situation up but Shadow's trust in them is shattered, harsh street life having taught him to trust nobody even as it hurts to push them away.

And so the least they can do is discretely aid Shadow by freeing the maidens and Zelda, subtly guiding him the way to the missing pieces.

At last the Four Sword is reforged and the magic keeping the four apart painfully becomes undone while Shadow and Zelda head to face Vaati and Ganon.

The by now severely instabile, weakened and darkness drained Dark Link watches, too many different voices in their head telling them what to do. Seeing as Shadow and Zelda loose ground against the two Lord's, they realize they must eliminate one of them so the duo can win.

And so they shatter the Dark Mirror, killing Vaati and slowly dying themselves without the darkness to sustain them.

At last, Zelda and Shadow manage to defeat the surprised and now alone Ganon, sealing him away before running to Dark Link's side. A tearful goodbye is managed before they fade away.

Hyrule is saved.

Shadow and Zelda return to castle town in the morning of the dawn of the first day of the seventh month.

...and thus Shadow can only hold the cooling corpse of his mother figure and cry.

He is pardoned but too late and so Shadow gives Zelda the Four Sword to put it back and settles on another journey, this one to find a witch powerful enough to switch his fate with that of Link or to collect the Triforce to make the same wish upon it...hoping to rewrite fate into as it always should have been, seeing himself as a failure and finished with life...the true heroes those who died so he could live.

Before you start reading I want to recommend @fatefulfaerie​ 's oneshot Eternal Love (on Tumblr). It has inspired this piece (and maybe some sequels to it). Its tragedy moved me in the wee hours of the morning to belt out what it below (as is typical of my creative habits). Of course, you can read this as a stand alone, too.

Nothing could keep out the frostbite of his scorn. Regardless of the meager defenses presented to her in a jail cell, the stone wasn’t as cold as her heart.

Just whisper. Oh please, just let yourself whisper it to your conscious. Let the friction of the lie on your tongue be the only warmth you find.

Her ankles grated against the cobbles of her isolation.

“He’ll know,” a sob echoed. Denial made her throat tighten and choke.

Sobs. She was sobbing.

“I know. I remember. It’s not supposed to be this way,” she reasoned.

And yet it was. She was a stranger to the person she knew more intimately than any other; yet she had scarcely spoken a word to this man most beloved in her heart.

“I miss you,” she broke. Mirrors can be shattered more than once.

Had the goddesses really lied to them? Had they laid her in another life with him only to estrange them from one another? She would rather take on eternity.

“It’s not supposed to be this way.”

The groan of rusted hinges invaded the sparse privacy availed to her.

What next?

The sharp paces of formal boots stopped at her enclosure.

“What has you so convinced that this is a flawed condition? Why have you such a relentless notion of my… obligation to you?”

Oh, how grief can grow. But could she really profess to have lost him when she’s never held any claim to him in this life?

…Yes. That was a very real ripping sensation in her chest, wasn’t it?

A hoarse rasp: “If you had known paradise, could you so easily settle with a betrayal of hell… A hell of betrayal?”

She hadn’t turned. Couldn’t bear to see him see her but not see her.

“You mustn't speak in riddles if you possess any hope of elevating your current disposition. I do you a great favor to consider tolerating your presence after what you’ve done.”

Zelda curled. A rat squeaked. The soles of her feet chafed against the scratchy straw littered across the floor. She was living a level less than some livestock. All in the midst of cold unfamiliarity from her oldest friend.

“What do you want to know?” she whispered.

The toe of his boot scuffed the floor in tandem with an exasperated release of his lungs.

“Why? Why would you do something like that? You’ve thrown your whole life away. For what? A kiss? And an unrequited one at that! My sympathies do not stretch far for you… and yet… I cannot help but be frustrated at this whole situation.”

“I didn’t know you were a prince.”

She heard a rustle of clothing as he most likely expressed his discontent with her absurdity.

“So? Do you randomly kiss any man you fancy that happens to make eye contact with you? In the woods no less? To my knowledge, that is not a very wise relational policy.”

His speech was so much more refined in comparison to before, and it came in ample quantities as well. She wasn’t the same as her past self… and it appeared he certainly wasn’t either.

“I thought you knew me.”

He sighed, sounding a strange, different kind of upset.

“How could I? I barely know your name.”

“Don’t you think it’s possible that greater things than knowledge act in the balances of our thoughts?”

“Didn’t I tell you not to be vague?”

“Apologies. I only wish to preserve your meager faith in my sanity.”

“I already think you’re senseless; you needn’t worry,” he breathed.

Would he believe anything she said?... Did it matter?

“I do know you, though not in this life. You and I… We had a before. We…”

I must see his eyes when I tell him. Even if it hurts. She rotated her figure toward him, draped in rags and covered in dirt. He had been gripping the bars of her cell before she noticed and he stepped back, smoothing his vest. He looked up again only to be met with her resigned sorrow of longing for a stranger. His brow pinched.

“You and I are... soulmates.”

She whispered the word.

“We were married in our life before. There must have been something about our love that made the goddesses want to see it grace the world again… Or something about it that made them want to rip us apart. Reincarnation, we had been told. I was to be with you in this life as well.”

Unbidden, the vivid memory of his ephemeral touch rose like an undead. Calloused, thin fingers dragging along her skin. The electricity of his gaze. The encompassing nature of his attention.

”Or so we thought. Such a thing has no guarantee I suppose. I almost wish my shoulders hadn’t been weighted with this knowledge of you.” She gazed wistfully at the crisp waters of his eyes so sadly he almost stepped forward again. “Almost.”

“Why now? Why didn’t you find me at any other time?”

“That night I kissed you was the same as the one I remembered everything. I was overwhelmed and rash. And now I’m in jail. Fate may be cruel, but it knows what its doing.”

Regally, he bent to rest on the balls of his feet, one knee to the ground, one elbow on his other. Those eyes ancient to her soul peered guardedly through the slats of her cage. “I don’t remember you, though. How am I supposed to believe you?”

A single tear cut through the grime on her cheeks. “I don’t know. Maybe one day it will come to you as it did to me… Maybe.”

It was an incredibly disheartening thing to place doubt on a matter like this.

Link stared at her for an endless moment in time before his composure slackened and he ran a hand through his bangs, styling coming out of its set. He exhaled, backing up to the door once standing.

“I...will come see you in two days. I have to think.”

The hinges groaned back into place.

“I’ll wait, love,” she sighed.

Desired LOZ AUs

AU in which Link and Zelda seal the mighty evil, not because they were out of options, but because they hoped their descendants would figure out how to free Ganondorf from Calamity when they couldn’t.

AU in which the Hero from 10,000 years ago was Gerudo!Link. Bonus points if Gerudo!Link wants to save the Gerudo King enslaved by Demise. Gender doesn’t matter because Link is honestly a gender neutral name.

AU in which the BotW chosen hero isn’t found early and made Zelda’s Knight and it isn’t Silent Knight Link who steps up as the Hylian Champion but Feral Hero Link.
