People on this site will be complaining about not enough jazz and then post white cis girl gringo pop. So ya like jazz? Well you're giving me an excuse to infodump about music again.

Kamasi Washington. He just released a super intense new album, his sax solos are strong and brilliant, but his slower atmospheric compositions are also poweful. The symbolism in the video to Truth, about the transcendant continuity of hybrid migrant cultures, made me cry several times. His lyrics are always full of black history while taking a fighting stance towards the future. Really, so many hours of music and it's all deep and fresh and in the moment.

Tigran Hamasyan. This guy started in prog rock, then decided it was not complex enough and created a form of jazz that is just mind bogling. If you thought a piano solo doesn't rock, get a load of this guy. This is what I call rhythm. And he also connects it with Georgian harmonies for a beautiful atmosphere.

So ya like jazz hop. Like chillout lowfi, but actually reaching deep and unfolding complex melodies without ever losing the cool vibes. Adding spoken words that are both poetry and common people from the community comming to big realizations. I'm talking about Alfa Mist here. It sounds like electronic oldschool hiphop beats but it's actually all played acoustic. Go dig the studio sessions.

I'm not even going to get into Nduduzo Makhathini, Seun Kuti, Yusef Dayes, Shaolin Afronauts, Yussef Kamaal... Jazz ain't old, these artists are all active right now, constantly bringing new twists to the genre. Stop telling other people to open their minds, open your own mind first. Having no opinion doesn't make you a better person. Stop preaching, start living.

24. Did you DNF anything? Why?

i DNF things ALLLLLLL the time bc i read so much on libby and i don't believe in wasting my own time, but that usually involves reading like one chapter and going "ok i dont think this is my thing." but i really did give these violent delights by chloe gong the old college try. and i Did not finish it god bless. as a book written by a 19 year old, it's tremendous, but as something i (a grownup) want to spend time reading, it falls short of what i want 😪

10. What was your favorite new release of the year?

I LOVED:

witch king by martha wells - (see art) - extremely fun fantasy about resistance to empire and what comes after.

mammoths at the gates by nghi vo - yet another nghi vo BANGER, an excellent entry into the singing hills cycle which is of course about what storytelling is and does

beyond ridiculous: making gay theatre with charles busch in 1980s new york by kenneth elliott - nonfiction account of ridiculous theater, a lowfi, high camp, tacky-on-purpose theater movement in um. well in 1980s gay new york. extremely inspiring artistically and also just a super juicy and loving account of the ins and outs of a gay friend group

some desperate glory by emily tesh - harsh but nuanced, fucked-up-funny sci fi about time loops, all possibilities, and getting deprogrammed from fascism

red rabbit by alex grecian - witchy western horror about a widowed school teacher, a white cowboy, a black cowboy, a young mexican dreamboat, a shitty old witch hunter, and his mysterious young ward - plus one or two other things they pick up along the way - making their way to burden county, oklahoma, to claim a bounty on a witch... (* i don't know if alex grecian knows this but the cowboys are lovers) (if you're at all an audiobook person, i HIGHLY recommend the audiobook - the guy who reads it does excellent voices)

yellowface by rf kuang - i feel like everyone and their mother knows about yellowface by this point but if you haven't heard about yellowface, it's a VICIOUSLY funny read-in-one-sitting satire of the publishing industry. GREAT read if you've ever been involved in any part of the industry lol

i read a lot of backlist this year so those are the main new releases for me 🫡

I think it's amazing that Tumblr gives so many opportunities to not only be introduced to amazing artists like yourself, but to actually be IN THE PRESENCE of them is just amazing!

Around 2012 I was introduced to Marina and the diamonds on Tumblr, now MARINA, and I've been a lifelong fan ever since having vinyl for her, gotten tattoos for her, and still listen to her new music.

Around 2018 I was introduced and actually was able to speak to a band called Younger Hunger who is the same genre as you. And it was an incredible experience to have a band I still listen to be so open to speaking with their fans because they were SO NEW! I was able to be on the ground floor to a now popular 443k+ followers a month on Spotify band!

And now being introduced to you! You are absolutely the genre that I am in love with! The kind of stoner rock, indie lowfi music that is so nice and relaxing and nostalgic! I heard your bedroom pop song and I've now had it on repeat! It's amazing music! Both my fiance and I both love it and we are so excited to keep hearing more!!

I just am honored to be in the presence again of a new artist that I can absolutely tell is going to be another younger hunger, another Marina and the diamonds/MARINA, but you're going to be Lady Charles! It's amazing to meet you! I'm so amazed by your music and your talent! Your courage and your grace! It's an honor to have found you! I so look forward to hearing more!

Is there another artist or album that gives off the same feel/vibes as edIT's Crying Over Pros for No Reason? I have been searching for a out 10 years to find something to scratch the itch left by this album, but always come up empty. Is there anything with a similar glitchhop/lowfi/chill vibe like this? It's a very unique style that nothing else seems to match, including other releases by edIT.
