Although he was acclaimed as a travel writer, Jonathan Raban, who has died aged 80, disliked the term. He agreed with his fellow writer Bruce Chatwin, who famously turned down the Thomas Cook award, that the term was too limiting. He said he found it an “open form”, which was perfect for him because “I write between genres anyway”. When asked why, unlike Chatwin, he accepted the Cook award twice, he said: “I was hungry for prizes.”
He was also hungry to travel, to get away from his roots. The leaving of Britain formed a crucial part of much of his writing, even as he sailed around the island in Coasting (1986). The heart of his work was set on water; his writing mirrors the movement of the sea, its calm with turmoil always lurking beneath, taking you along with it, hiding and revealing. He mixes literary sources and knowledge with the people and places encountered on his journey; he’s less exotic than Chatwin, less caustic than Paul Theroux, but all of it comes in service to his real journey, within himself, escaping into travel. “Wherever I was, I felt like an outsider,” he said, and it is a feeling that permeates his writing, though he was drawn to America, a land of immigrants: the freedom of adjusting to this new world, and its contrasts with his old, became a major theme.
What he was escaping was the English world into which he was born, in Hempton, Norfolk. He was three when he first met his father, the Rev Canon J Peter CP Raban, an army captain returning from the second world war. He grew up in various parish postings, and his father came to represent “the Conservative party, the army, the church, the public school system in person”. It was his mother, Monica (nee Sandison), who “taught me to read, which was my one proficiency”.
He despised boarding school, to which he was sent at five, and eventually studied English at Hull University, where he organised a library committee in order to meet Philip Larkin, notoriously adept at avoiding students. They discussed novels and jazz, but never poetry. He married a fellow student, Bridget Johnson, in 1964. After graduating he taught English and American literature at Aberystwyth, then at East Anglia; he was captivated by American writers, particularly Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud and Philip Roth, and published a study of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn.
In 1969, he moved to London as a freelance writer, on the recommendation of Malcolm Bradbury, falling into the last hurrah of the Grub Street era, reviewing while living in the basement of the house shared by the poet Robert Lowell and the writer Lady Caroline Blackwood, after his marriage ended. His experience of Larkin and Lowell led to another book of literary criticism, The Society of the Poem. He joined the circle that emerged around the New Review magazine, in Soho’s Pillars of Hercules pub, and in 1974 published Soft City, a mix of personal memoir and London observation that became an early example of “psychogeography”.
His first travel book, Arabia Through the Looking Glass (1979), took a modern orientalist view of the area reminiscent of Charles Doughty’s Travels in Arabia Deserta and other classic travel writing on the Middle East. Old Glory (1981) was his first book set in the US, taking a skiff down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans. It recalls his study of Huckleberry Finn, blending the approaching age of Ronald Reagan into his inward experiences with America’s own eccentricities, and was a success on both sides of the Atlantic. Jan Morris called it “the best book of travel ever written by an Englishman about the United States”.
His first novel, Foreign Land (1985), follows an eccentric expat Englishman, George Grey, who leaves the Caribbean to return home, much to the consternation of his daughter, and sail a just-bought boat around Britain. Raban recapitulated the story himself in Coasting, in which he sails around the country, which, as the Falklands war erupts, seems an increasingly insular island nation. The book marks the perfecting of his classic English voice, that of the friendly faux-bumbler whose self-deprecation is itself a form of humble-brag, which has served British humour from Arthur Marshall to Bill Bryson; it made him a neutral sort of observer to Americans he met.
After publishing a memoir, For Love & Money: A Writing Life, he moved to the US, his journey across the Atlantic in a container ship told in Hunting Mister Heartbreak: A Discovery of America (1990), and, crucially, a poignant leaving scene that reflects the end of his second marriage, to the London art dealer Caroline Cuthbert.
He settled in Seattle, where in 1992 he married his third wife, Jean Lenihan; their daughter, Julia, was born in 1993. He continued travelling – Bad Land: An American Romance was set in Montana, dealing with the difficult dreams of immigrants to the beautiful but harsh Big Sky country. But his next book was perhaps his finest. Passage to Juneau (1996) is nominally another boat trip, on Alaska’s Inside Passage, a man leaving his wife and daughter for his travel. But midway through the trip, he returns to England, where his father is dying and his family has gathered. It is a travelogue of the writer’s mid-life implosion; he returns to finish his journey only to be greeted by his wife announcing she and his daughter are leaving him.
He remained in Seattle to concentrate on the joint care of his daughter. His 2003 novel, Waxwings, takes its butterfly title from Nabokov’s Pale Fire: “I was the shadow of the waxwing slain / By the false azure of the window pane.” Drawing on Bad Land, it is the story of an expat Hungarian-British man, in the dot.com boomtown that is Seattle, with an American wife, and an illegal Chinese immigrant worker who begins reconstructing his house. Raban was a distant relative of Evelyn Waugh, and the book recalls Waugh’s Men at Arms, where the social whirl does not stop for the newly launched war. My Holy War (2006), about the 9/11 attack and the US invasion of Iraq, was almost a companion piece.
In 2006 he published his third novel, Surveillance, in which a journalist tracks down a reclusive writer who has been kept hidden by his publisher lest he destroy the credibility of his Holocaust memoir. Its prime concern is the many-faceted ambiguity of liberty in the war on terror. “The world changed,” he said. “It didn’t change with 9/11. It changed with the Patriot Act, with the homeland security measures and the war on terror.”
His 2010 collection, Driving Home, is an eccentric mix of literary criticism, tales of great sea voyages, the state of the US in the 21st century and the mix of people he meets along the way, even as he remained in Seattle. A 2011 essay in the New York Times, The Getaway Car, detailed a drive down the Pacific coast to take Julia, now 18, to university at Stanford, outside San Francisco. Later that year, Raban suffered a massive stroke, which left one side of his body paralysed and confined him to a wheelchair. He continued writing, primarily for the New York Review of Books. It seemed an ironic fate for a writer who saw his journeys as “a means of escape, freedom and solitude, I could be happy … in a way I couldn’t be at home”. Yet he had always travelled through literature, and through his writing. And now he had a different sort of freedom in his daughter, which perhaps allowed him to address his own escape in his last book, to be published this autumn, a memoir titled Father and Son.
Julia survives him.
Jonathan Raban, writer, born 14 June 1942; died 17 January 2023

I have never met a pleasant person from Connecticut I’m going to be real. There must be something in the air. Your whole state looks like an anti-communist propaganda movie set for Soviet Russia. If someone showed me a picture of a parking lot building and said this is a Whole Foods in Connecticut I would believe them. Grey ass buildings that look like the phrase “business casual” and are more Lowell MA than Lowell MA. Nothing but the color BROWN for fucking miles. Get out of here. Connecticut more like Connect to a different state than MA because I don’t want to be within breathing distance of the Forbidden Land

Chapter 1.2 Notes:
Whatever it’s Norein-sensei but I ain’t writing that weeb shit (/j) also ig Miss Norein works but eh
oh so everyone thinks flynn’s sunny side is his true self can’t wait to be proven wrong /j i have a secret love for the hc of flynn internally being tired of being nice and wanting to go apeshit
like how the narration tries to emphasise they’d never truly break up. iconic
the chapter is kinda mid so far
wow! knights are cruel! everyone hates knights *thinks about flynn* you may have one knight
man hanks is such a chad for being there for the lower quarter just gotta say
omg i love how oppressive the knights are in this ln *baby thumbs up* truly something not explored in the main game for obvious reasons but man they really really loved flynn as their treasure of the lower quarter for that huh
i do wonder if yuri’s grey mentality is inadvertently caused by the dark wings’s existence ([redacted] figure) telling him its ok to be gay and do crime (i have actually no idea)
ah yes flynn typical lawful good saying crimes are bad don’t do murder (you’ll never guess what happens next!)
ah yes yuri ‘has to be contrary to flynn’ lowell type of guy. bro is the type to say ‘grenade launchers are part of the game, if you don’t like it don’t play’ to flynn’s ‘wow! great game guys! good luck next round :)’ after decimating the opponent.

February 2nd, 1981
Grandma died last night. It was her birthday. After the telephone call from Uncle Lewie I was in a state of great turmoil trying to think of how I could not go back for the funeral. Just an emotional mess that I need not subject myself to. Wendy encouraged me not to go. Late yesterday afternoon Allan and I had just left the apartment to go to J's. I heard the phone ringing from the hallway. It was Freddie, crying. Telling me that Grandma had been asking for me all day. I should come home now. I told her I would call her later. I then took a black beauty and spent the next several hours getting drunk and getting sucked off in the basement of J's. One man after another. Finally, Allan and I left and came back to the Village and we both snorted more speed and Allan went home and I went back to Ty's. Jerry was there, with a date. I was as flippant as I could be to him. I got cruised by several men, but by now my senses were somewhat dulled. I finally picked up a moderately good-looking guy and went back to his apartment and we slept in each others arms. This morning I hated to get out of the warmth of the apartment and him. I walked home in drizzly grey rain and when I got there the telephone was ringing. It was Freddie. Grandma died at midnight. Later my Uncle Lowell called. Then my mother called. By now I know I have to go. It has little to do with physically tending to my grandmother's burial. It has more to do with a responsibility to these people who, after all, are my family. Some duty to share sorrow. So, tomorrow I fly back at 7:00 AM. My mother will be there. It's the first time I've seen her in two years.
And I know in some final way, this trip home to participate in the burial of my grandmother is the closing chapter of my relationship to the entire family.

WhatPeelWouldPlay Albums Of The Year 2017
2017 has been the best year for music of the century, but you have to look in the hidden corners, or this list, to know that. Laura Marling didn’t make the top 30. Tom Rosenthal, with the epic album, Fenn, that was on repeat for months, beat Sufjan’s live album of his classic album to number 1, after a tightly fought back to back on New Years Eve. Don’t listen to anyone who says folk is dying. Its sibling, alt-folk, is all over this list. Number 100 in the list would be in the Top 10 any other year of this century so peel your ears over this list.

Essay #2 The Merrimack Repertory Theatre
Upon visiting the Merrimack Repertory Theatre, I was immediately overwhelmed with the line just to enter the theatre. At the top of the stairs I was greeted by the person in the ticket booth and handed my paper of access to watch The Royale written by Miami native, Marco Ramirez. As I searched for my seat high up in the balconies, I discovered the small and skinny aisles to be a little difficult to maneuver in being the size I am. However, it made me realize the authority this theatre had for attracting many residents of Lowell and cities beyond; it explains the large quantities of seating available throughout the theatre. The vibrant stage was dead center in the theatre and was warmed with lights of all colors. The cast could be seen moving throughout the sides of the small stage and the show began shortly after.
I was leaned back in my seat, knees rubbing uncomfortably against the seat in front of me, and I was met with two shirtless men in grey vintage boxing shorts acting out a boxing match on the stage. The character, Jay “The Sport” Jackson won the match and made his opponent, Fish, his boxing partner shortly after the match. Throughout the play, I was very much aware of the different language and vocabulary represented in the play. I automatically assumed the setting of the play was in the early 1900’s because the clothing, vocabulary, and social differences were evident.
Marco Ramirez’s The Royale was based on the true and historical story of the world’s first African American heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson’s match with James Jeffries. Though the play was twisted in the likings of Marco Ramirez’s imagination, it did not fail to address the true and historical issues of racism, segregation, and real life events that had taken place at the time of the setting of the play. When the audience was revealed in the beginning of the play that Jay Jackson was not allowed to compete with other fighters who were not black, was very real and emotional. That kind of inequality and unfairness, even in professional sports, was alive and practiced back then. Segregation within the professional athletic leagues was very common and historically speaking, athletes like Jack Johnson, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, and Earl Lloyd improved and began the movement of equality in men’s professional athletic leagues. The Royale does a good job interpreting the thought process that could’ve been going through as the first African American boxer to play in a heavyweight championship match. Though the story and background of Jay Jackson’s character is different than that of who the man he is based off of, Marco Ramirez allows the audience to get a glimpse of the things that could’ve been going on at the time. In the play, Jay’s sister visits him and warns him of the many threats she and her family have received because of their relation to an African American boxer who wants to create history. Threats and actions that followed them were very common in the African American community at the time.
As the play continues, I notice how the matches are set up. I find Ramirez’s artistic techniques to be very impressive and unique when portraying the thoughts of the boxers during their matches. The audience, including myself, get a fascinating view into their mindsets when they box, which allows a more emotional connection to the characters of the play. I also appreciate the breaking of the fourth wall during the play. Some people may read it as unintentional, but it is obvious to me that it is very much intentional. Whenever the characters broke the fourth wall, it was Ramirez’s intention to develop a sort of close and personal connection between the audience and the characters. In conclusion, it is assumed Ramirez wants the audience to develop the connection to his characters in the play to relate to them, or even to cast themselves into their mindsets at the time to truly feel an understanding of their struggles and current situations.
The play reached the point in which Jay Jackson discovered a group of people have attempted to enter the match while carrying weapons. This triggers him immediately because he is baffled by the idea of someone attempting to harm in solely for the reason of him being an African American boxer choosing to fight against a white boxer in a heavyweight match. However, it is soon revealed that this wasn’t the first attempt from someone, or some people. According to Jay’s manager, Max, and his coach, Wynton, there have been multiple attempts at past matches. I remember having a very intense and uncomfortable feeling for Jay Jackson, primarily because Ramirez wrote the play in a way so the audience develops a very close connection to the main characters. I thought about what it was like being known from county to county, state to state, coast to coast, as the first African American to accomplish the one thing which Jay Jackson did in the play, as well as Jack Johnson did in real life, and that was competing against a white man in a very segregated sport at the time. The feeling must have been very scary, nerve-wracking, and rebellious to some sorts.
Towards the end of the play, Ramirez’s artistic value towards the play was shown when Jay Jackson’s subconscious replaced his opponent with his sister, mentally speaking of course, and it resulted in Jay winning the fight and solving his deepest issues. I appreciated this viewpoint from the stage and the characters because it was dramatic, attention grabbing, and it created a final connection to the characters in the play. I think for Jay Jackson to have subconsciously fought his sister was moving, not only for his character, but for the audience as well.
As the lights dimmed to a complete blackout, the show was complete and the cast came out to begin their curtain call. The Merrimack Repertory Theatre had completed yet another successful night in the vibrant city of Lowell. I left with a clearer understanding of how dangerous and courageous it was to live one’s life knowing people wanted to end it for you, only because one stood up for what one believed in. I also left with a new place in mind to watch plays and musicals, also known as the Merrimack Repertory Theatre.
