Does the Environment matter?
Many of the environmental issues that we face as a species are global in nature but I think it's important for us to work on many of these factors at home.
There are several industries that are fundamentally damaging to the environment and I do not think it's fair or reasonable to simply ban those industries in the UK only to import the goods those industries produce from other nations.
Companies and Consumers need to face up to the costs and the impacts of these types of products.
Carbon offsetting and carbon credits are a poor substitute for being genuinely environmentally conscious. Being environmentally neutral or environmentally positive should be something that is rewarded and not a simple PR stunt.
I'd like to see more low-carbon or carbon-free energy sources and working in partnership with other nations who have a wealth of circumstances the UK simply doesn't have when it comes to these resources. We need a strong grid to provide energy globally, we need a global standard for high-voltage energy transmission. For every square meter of solar cells installed on UK houses, those same cells installed in the tropics would produce more energy more reliably.
Our insistence on self-sufficiency is ultimately an environmental disaster in its own right, we'll need to produce several times the amount of solar cells or wind turbines simply due to a poor choice of installation location.
On a more local level whenever there's a resource we dig out of the ground or we bury something in it in the hopes of sufficiently dealing with waste there are knock-on effects that need to be considered, mining disrupts groundwater as does landfill, each impacting on the ways in which I water ways run, similarly sewage and water treatment impact our ability to enjoy green spaces and beaches.
In the days of the Industrial Revolution it was mandated that your water intake must be downstream of wastewater outlets, this encouraged companies to maintain waterways as polluting the water directly impacted them, with modern water and sewage systems this has been outsourced to water utility companies who have recently seen it as more profitable to take the fines rather than being environmentally conscious.
I'd like to see more done for the environment as it does impact us all and I'd like to see it done in a way that's fair and equitable and avoids simply trading around the blame and lying to consumers about the ethics and environmental impacts of the things they consume.
There may be times when the only thing that will do a job is one that's environmentally unfriendly in some manner this shouldn't be a problem so long as for everything else everyone does the best that they can. And we make strides to undo the damage we've already done.

Effortless Management of Your Drainage Assets with Kingspan’s SmartServ Pro Asset Management Tool
NEWS FEATURES FIRE & SECURITY SUBMISSIONS RESOURCES
Managing below-ground drainage products across a company’s estate can be a huge challenge for facility management teams.
Ensuring that a company’s collective separators, pump stations and sewage treatment plants are all working safely and correctly is difficult when they aren’t always easily accessible and may be widely distributed across remote geographical locations.
Nonetheless, this level of oversight is a requirement for all UK businesses under current EN 858-2 legislation, in order to protect the environment and public health from local pollution events.
Kingspan’s brilliant new SmartServ Pro system now offers facilities teams an all-encompassing solution to the problem of visibility, at a relatively low-cost (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj7An5CTa54&feature=youtu.be).
The system provides instant access to real-time performance data for each individual drainage product and gives early warning of any issues.
The benefits this brings include not just easy monitoring, legal compliance and optimum asset performance, but also significant time and cost-savings for a company.
How can SmartServ Pro help FMs save time and money?
Once installed, SmartServ Pro sends alerts to users about the need for servicing and emptying/tankering of an asset as and when required, rather than simply when a maintenance contract requires it.
This intelligent monitoring solution delivers significant time savings, and avoids the disruption and costs associated with unnecessary tankering. It also ensures a management plan is in place – all of which can be outsourced to the Kingspan Service team if required.
Predictive maintenance support is provided through an online platform and this also gives immediately notification of a drop in performance of any individual asset along with details of the problem (ie. which component is failing) in order to give teams the all information they need to action a repair.
Furthermore, SmartServ Pro acts as an asset register for a company, providing detailed, easy to access data which can be exported/shared as needed.
James Curran, Kingspan’s Business Development Director, advises: “Separators, pump stations and sewage treatment plants are not fit-and-forget products; they need regular servicing and maintenance.
“Many businesses choose to service them based on historic precedent rather than need – in other words when it’s been done in the past. That’s unnecessary, potentially costly and it’s very wasteful. Added to which, you could be fined for not complying to EN 858-2 guidelines or prosecuted for polluting the local environment.
“Kingspan’s SmartServ Pro solves all these issues. It’s a big step forward from previous asset management solutions – even those which currently use sensor technology and end-user text alerts. And users can be confident that the system is built on tried and trusted technology and software, backed by Kingspan know-how.”

The major factors that are driving the growth of zero liquid discharge system market is the growing need for freshwater. Only 3% of the total water present on earth is drinkable leaving the rest water as of no use. This freshwater is available from different water sources such as rivers lake, ponds and so on. However, with the increase in urbanization and industrialization tremendous stress has been put on these sources. These industries need a large amount of water for carrying out various operations such as air preheating, paint jobs, fabricating, processing, washing, diluting, and cooling due to which most of the water is supplied there.

Moreover, the rapid urbanization is going on more and more people are moving into cities for jobs and finding better livelihood which is putting immense pressure in local freshwater sources. Government and municipalities across the globe are moving toward wastewater treatment to purify the wastewater collected from sewage and then providing industries with that treated water leaving the local water sources to be used by citizens. This wastewater treatment can relieve the water sources for the upcoming few years. Hence, contributing to increasing growth of zero liquid discharge system market.
Growing population is also a major factor which makes it hard for the government to provide required freshwater for people. The regulatory authorities across the globe are imposing strict regulations on the disposal of industrial and municipal wastewater due to the effect of harmful wastewater. Moreover, freshwater availability in most of the countries in Africa are usually affected by low availability of freshwater due to which demand of zero liquid discharge system is growing in that region. The zero liquid discharge systems are designed to minimize the capital investment and cost of operating. Additionally, it requires less manpower for carrying out operations due to which the demand for zero liquid discharge system is boosting.

New Post has been published on https://engineer.city/transformative-tech-for-wastewater/
Transformative tech for wastewater
New technology developed in the USA that could revolutionise the way the world’s wastewater can be processed is being tested by experts at Scottish Water.
A six month trial of Microvi’s MicroNiche Engineering (MNE) technology is taking place at Scottish Water’s Waste Water Development Centre at Bo’ness. The technology uses specific bacteria that eat pollutants in the wastewater. It creates an environment for these bacteria known as biocatalysts – to make them work more efficiently. Good bacteria beat bad bacteria
It is designed to intensify the population of the bacteria, which are put in a special capsule to encourage them to work much faster. The process is designed to speed up the rate at which the good bacteria out-compete the bad bacteria.
The technology was also developed to drastically reduce the amount of sludge — the residual, semi-solid material produced as a by-product during sewage treatment — created in the water treatment process. This happens due to the biocatalyst creating an environment where bacteria reproduction is limited.
Reducing the amount of sludge produced cuts the energy requirements to manage bio-solids and requires less space for the treatment process. This can save not only energy but also time and costs. It means using fewer chemicals in the treatment process too.
In previous testing in the USA the sludge produced using Microvi was shown to be only a around a tenth of typical levels.
The trial at Bo’ness will test the limits and conditions in which the biocatalysts can operate and see if this technique has the potential to transform how wastewater is treated.
George Ponton, head of Research and Innovation at Scottish Water, said: “We are excited to see the outcome of the trials of this potentially innovative wastewater process. If this process works it would transform the way wastewater is treated.
“To meet the future demand of an ever-growing population it is essential that we find ways to increase the capacity and efficiency of our existing assets. Microvi offers the potential to meet growth requirements faster and at lower cost than many current conventional plant extensions.”
Microvi’s technology was designed and developed in the USA and is already used in parts of North America and Australia.
The team at the centre will carry out rigorous testing of the new process, after which Scottish Water will look at the findings to determine if the process would be useful and cost effective at any of Scotland’s wastewater treatment plants.
Dr Fatemeh Shirazi, CEO and CTO of California-based Microvi, said: “We are delighted to work closely with Scottish Water at its pioneering test and development centre. As we have seen at other demonstration projects in the UK, the Microvi MNE technology is positioned to deliver a paradigm shift in the way we treat wastewater while protecting health and preserving the environment.
“It is an exciting time for the industry as we find new ways to respond to new challenges in an ever-expanding world.”
The test centre, the only facility of its kind in the UK, is situated next to Bo’ness Waste Water Treatment Works, making it a unique and dynamic research hub for wastewater technologies. Users can test new processes, technologies and equipment under live conditions in a safe and operational scale environment to enhance the marketability of their products without risk to Scottish Water operations.
The centre provides three individual feeds of wastewater from different stages in the treatment process. All discharges from testing areas enter back into the normal treatment process, offering a flexible and low-risk testing environment. There is also the provision for testing of new screening innovations at the inlet to the Treatment Works. Operated by the utility’s commercial subsidiary, Scottish Water Horizons, users can also benefit from UKAS accredited sampling and analysis services.
