OCs as types of suffering

Good morning! I was tagged by @gwynbleidd and @katsigian in the past couple days to complete this uquiz as my OCs. thanks for tagging me 🫡🧡 I decided to take it as my silly little family from my silly little world because my world is all I'm thinking about lately as far as OC stuff goes….. and honestly I feel like these results gave me even more insight to how my characters operate and how they complement each other. Especially Kilian's result i think shows me a side to his already existing sadness that I hadn't considered enough before; i think a lot about his anger but not as much about his sadness, so this is exciting to explore. I do think the persuasion check should be dependent on your relationship to Gale, I don't see why a 16-18 couldn't have been the point (although a 3 is so funny in that way, I agree).

I think it's good to examine when an ick or even an outright trigger is because of some narrative failing versus when it's just something we're experiencing. For me, it's really about going, okay, what is the intent here? The dialogue doesn't suggest that Tav wants a conquest or the hot twin discount, but more, hey, you are beautiful and very sensual and this would be a nice time for both of us. Of course with video games we run into the issue of a narrative that is meant to be taken by the player and ultimately how much can we control or sway a player that wants to do harm? Is doing harm here, if the player's intent is dub con and laughing at discomfort (vs encouraging an experience in a genuine caring way), transferring to potential irl harm? And with this the answer is, I really don't know.

I've definitely seen some interpretations of this that go straight to calling Gale a cuck and that weirds me out, feels similarly to how disrespectful I find a particular kind of sexualization of Astarion. There's so much religious trauma and abuse and autonomy struggle in this game for everyone. It's good to do hornyposting- lord knows I'm horny on main- but I wish we had space to just... experience these things alongside these characters. For Gale, being like, no it is hot to think of you getting pleasured actually, that's maybe a big step and it's not about being a cuckold, it's about finding pleasure in your partner's pleasure versus feeling threatened that your partner can experience pleasure outside of you, or more ideally for this narrative, not carrying the pressure and baggage of being Chosen into new experiences (and this isn't some condemnation of monogamy or single sexual partner preferences at all, just how I think we can realistically engage with this story because Gale doesn't disapprove or tell you no - this game has a an extra tool against dub con and it's that we see when someone in our party thinks "oh fuck no" or "hell yeah" via those approvals).

I wish there had been the ability to check in with Gale between this conversation/persuasion role and getting into the room, as well as after. Aftercare is best practice and I think would be very appropriate to characterization for a relationship with Gale. This is one of the pitfalls of having such an expansive DnD game without the ability to have a DM to check in with/guide you.

And this is for anyone who is newer to these kinds of conversations/experiences- digital or otherwise- or still young in their fandom or even literary analysis journey. We live in a social media age that gameifies being Correct or winning discourse. sometimes there's a very brutal kind of purity we find ourselves trying to live up to but I think that fiction lets us explore things in a way we can't always do irl and as long as we're able to talk about these things respectfully, we're making ourselves better people, better community members, and engaging with art and storytelling in a way that makes us better artists/storytellers.

I have so many thoughts about Gale being overwhelmed but not disapproving or against this. Gale is very comfortable saying no to this Tav at least. And even in Act III has disapproved of a choice or two.

The way he responds when you ask about Halsin, to me, felt wounded more than it felt I am strictly monogamous on principle, and of course I say this as someone who has thought a lot about the reality of being a (one of, one of many) chosen of Mystra and her lover, when you know that your mentor(s) and perhaps some of your peers have had that experience with her as well.

I wouldn't take away from anyone who is wholly uncomfortable with this story and would never talk to the twins with Gale at all but I like that the game leaves space for some choices to be personal and wounded and I like that Gale is a very horny, sexual person who has emotional hang ups but is still open and exploring in spaces where sharing doesn't mean emotional intimacy.

I don't think he's going for a future with a polycule but sex is a part of trauma and recontextualizing or reengaging with our sexuality as we heal isn't something you see a lot of rep for in media- most storytelling focuses on hypersexualization as a coping skill or being intensely sex adverse- and there's space here for that. A Gale who steps further from self loathing and deeper into a secure commitment with Tav could very well have a real good weekend at the Grove a year or few down the line, iykwim.

Now, that's the end of the Avie propaganda, but I want to take a moment to talk about our opponent, Rusty! Not only because I've voted for him every round, which I have, or because of his beautiful turkey leg and curled ear, which they are.

Rusty's owner has made a very important post about adopting cats in need, cats who are overlooked, cats who are less likely to be given loving homes. I agree wholeheartedly with Rusty's parent here, and I don't want to detract from that sentiment with simple propaganda.

Her full name is Avalon but that's too regal for her so she's just Avie. Yes submitter named her. She's an unrepentant food thief that makes the most (adorable) indignant sounds when they remove her from the source of temptation, purrs loud enough to be heard from across the room, and is so SO very tiny with tiny legs and the smallest little dainty paws. But her most important feature... is the tongue. She forgets it out so often. Asleep? Tongue. Grooming and something made a noise? Tongue. Just casually staring? Tongue's peekin' out a lil bit. Submitter loves her so much. And SHE loves YOU. Guaranteed. This is a lap cat. If you come visit, park it anywhere and she is on your lap to say hello.

RUSTY

Rusty used to be a stray and then he had An Accident and now he has three legs (he had been living at a vet's office for a month when submitter adopted him). But he's doing great! Submitter taught him how to climb stairs and built him some steps out of cardboard boxes so he can get on their bed whenever he wants. They think he could be anywhere from 6 to 12 years old, it's hard to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. To their pleasant surprise, he does not mind wearing a harness at all, which is good because he still loves the outdoors. He often gets his ear turned inside out while bathing and weirdly prefers dry food over wet.

when i first got Rusty he could not go up stairs... but he could go down, so he would get stuck at the bottom of them and meow for help. Of course he also hated being picked up and carried up the stairs.

but now he just goes ZOOP up the stairs doing audible damage to my carpet the whole way, which is so valid of him because i hate carpet on stairs

@loveofdetail Today is the day of hilarious sentences that make sense in context of FR and sound horrifying outside of it. Someone in a discord I am in wrote about a dragon: ‘He is wearing my friend’s skin’. And it totally makes sense in FR context in a FR chatroom, but IRL it would probably scare the hell out of any random passerby who had the misfortune overhearing that.

i can’t evaluate The Light at the End as one thing; i LOVE the high chaos version, and yet in low chaos it’s soooooo boring

oh absolutely, hc light at the end whips ass... but imo from like, an environmental perspective (not just level design!), death to the empress hits harder for me. it feels realer! the addition of civilians into the last level of the game means a lot imo. and the fact it’s bookending the beginning of the game, using the same maps, yet it’s completely different... the same ambient music and sound effects used in the first game/at the beginning of dh2... ugh... i just love it

Current obsession: well, @sigilmint has been doing little tours of Dunwall/Karnaca for me to see stuff I missed or didn't know about or just plain didn't remember, so my ever-present Dishonored obsession has been at the fore lately. When I finish the third season of the Witcher I'm gonna spiral about that too, I'm sure. In real life I'm obsessing over a renovation project I'm trying very hard to make happen. That one's less fun.
