Okay so now that I'm back home (no pun intended), here is my contribution to @stood-onthecliffside's love letters event!

In short, the prompt of 'home' really reminded me of a written piece I wrote up when I changed psychologists in 2022. I have put the written piece below (because it's quite long) but have also made a playlist which you can listen to here that compliments it for the event.

Home is a four letter word. So is jail.

Too often, they are one in the same. For prisoners, both physical and within their own mind, the walls around them feel like a tomb. A child raised in chaos may not see much difference between a prison riot and the shouting matches within their own house. Likewise, the disinterest, disdain or overall lack of respect and grace society shows both groups while still expecting their loyalty and respect makes them more alike than anyone would like to admit. It is no wonder we live with an oxymoron in which most released prisoners are re-incarcerated and many of the children who wish to leave home most stay the longest. Society says that actions speak louder than words, but when the great escape and happiness feels like a pipe dream compared to all you've ever known and no clear course to change that, home can be a loaded term.

Forgiveness is an eleven letter word. So is passiveness.

Too often they are confused with each other. Growing up, I was taught that “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” and that Harley Quinn and the Joker were a love story. It seemed to be this all encompassing force that overcame all. And at the centre of that? The idea of the home; the physical representation of love held up by the foundation of respect and forgiveness. And yet for so many years, I felt I never received either. Worse yet, that the lack of either was my fault for not speaking up or acknowledging the habit. For forgiveness meant allowance of a clean slate and not using past discretion that had been 'dealt with' against others, right? To love was to not keep records, to and forgiveness is a pillar of love, so how could it not?

Change is a six letter word. So is choice.

Too often people think the two are conflated; that if change is not happening that is because they have no choice. Or worse yet, that someone never had the choice to change. I've spent so much of my 20s being the first and giving my power away to those who are the second. Time has made me realise that we control both. By making choices we make change and by making changes, new choices will come to us. Furthermore, love changes over time and is not an all encompassing force, it is a choice we make over and over. So when push came to shove, I made the biggest change of my life; I chose to love myself over and over again and never let anyone disrespect me again.

Apprehension is a twelve letter word. So is convalescent.

Too often people thought that you cannot have both. That to have apprehensions was a sign that you were venturing down the wrong path. During the early days of my estrangement from family, I became 'worse' in every way to the point my loved ones feared how much longer I'd be around. Their fear spread and interventions were being had about how they were wrong to encourage me to leave and they should be sending me home; so much so that I almost agreed with them. Years later, when I could finally talk about what happened, my psychiatrist sent me several studies showing that it's common for people to fall apart when they first left toxic environments, and in fact was a sign they finally felt safe enough to start the grief and healing process. Knowing I was a swiftie, he paraphrased her quote that being fearless is not the absence of fears, but to have them and move forward anyway. He noted that healing was much the same; you never really stop missing people and times, you just keep moving forward and doing the best you can, even if you have to do it alone.

Independence is a twelve letter word. So is relationship.

Too often I thought that I could not have both. Before my mid 20s, most of my relationships consisted of others taking too much and me letting them. Those that didn't were held at arms length to avoid the 'gotcha' moment where they could do the same. If love is always selfless, independence is always selfish, and in my case, was deliberately so. I felt that relationships were compromise. and compromise was the death of independence, and with it, my hopes and dreams. I was proudly an independent woman and had accepted that relationships just weren't for me. But the more time passed, and the more my loved ones and their loved ones uplifted each other and myself, the more I realised that they were kind, patient, trusting, proud rather than envious, did not keep score and perhaps most importantly, never were self-seeking in ways that cut down the other's needs; even when I was not so towards myself. And so simultaneously slowly, yet all at once, I realised that at least some of the ideals I had been taught all along weren't wrong, just simply happened with the wrong people. My family had tried their best with the misguided extremes they were taught, but it wasn't enough. Balance is required and though it still feels fake, you really can have it all with the right people. I'm still not as good as I'd like at being in any kind of relationships. But when I look at the smiles of my loved ones, I realise that I've finally made the great escape right to where I wanted to go; home.

A short teaser/taste of my Deltarune AU known as LoveLetter. This AU mostly focuses on events following Spamton's fall from grace and how they affect the life of a lonely White Addison lady who developed a deep parasocial love for him during his BIG SHOT years.

This particular document is important to the overall theme and events since all Addisons are required to sign it. Spamton just happens to be the first one to destroy it since he loses his identification as an Addison after making his fateful "communion" with an unknown entity, thus elevating him to a type of Darkner no longer bound by the Addison Code of Conduct.

This unusual transformation in his internal "code" left many Addisons wondering just how he was able to do it, and this burning question is just one of many that the heroine, Thetalan L. Addison (aka Theta), seeks to answer.

For anyone curious, here is the full seal used as a stamp. I made this as a parody of California's state seal. It took me many hours to complete because I'm not used to drawing buildings, but I'm overall happy with it.

Idteel, the official signing the document, is another character of this AU. I will upload art of him eventually.

honestly it’s . literally just fluff 😭 it’s my loveletter to loverboy/loserboy cult!sugu because i do think he is Canon . i love manipulative cult!sugu but i think he would be a soft lamb / guard dog with his partner. and i ALSO adore any concept where his s/o is Just Some Guy removed from sorcery (while still being able to see curses and stuff since… well….. geto is the way that he is.) and that’s the case for this au!! :3

the ’plot’ is basically just that reader works at a preschool, and has to participate in some open house event thingie!! or something along those lines…. the point is that they’re welcome to bring a plus one, and despite not wanting to engage with non-sorcerers at all, geto insists you let him come :3c he wants to support you !!!!!!!

I HAVE A FANCOMIC CONUNDRUM

Hey, Voyagers!

I'm Omni, your favorite Robot-American, TTRPG Creator & Artist buddy... aaaand Im in a bind.

So, for those of you in the know, Ive been really enjoying making fancomic works lately, and its been very rewarding (Check out my Helldivers 2 Fancomic "Gentry Dolaan Aint No Fascist" if youre interested in what I've been cooking!). So much so, that I am also working on a Space Marine Fancomic/Webcomic (working title: "BROTHERS: a Tale of Treachery and Doom"), and I'm really excited about it. Ive been doing tons of art and planning for it behind the scenes, and it's a story I think will be really fun to tell and read! I've been a huge fan of the Warhammer setting since I was young, and Narrative campaigns like The Taros Campaign, Siege of Vraks & The Badab War sit on my bookshelves next to my copies of some Horus Heresy books & my Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus. Its definitely a loveletter to this hobby and setting I've loved for so long...

...BUT...

Games Workshop (the owners of the "WARHAMMER 40,000" IP and the creators of the Tabletop Miniature game) is a terrible company. For a very abbreviated list of their bullshit... - Games Workshop can be overly litigious towards fan creators (a few years back, they went on an absolute spree of issuing cease-and-desist/takedown notices on tons of fanworks in preparation of the launch of their WARHMMER+ streaming service, primarily to prevent competition to their in house animations. It's either directly destroyed or had a crazy chilling effect on many amazing fan projects, such as Bruva Alfabusa's amazing "If The Emperor Had a Text-To-Speech Device" which has been discontinued, or gorgeous animations like THE EXODITE or ASTARTES, both of which were bought up, taken off of youtube and forced onto their premium Warhammer + service behind a paywall. The creator of ASTARTES has already suffered a great deal at the hands of hackers stealing their youtube channel, and since their purchase by GW and move to Warhammer plus has been dead silent, and the EXODITE suffered immensely during its production. And with a new Warhammer TV series in development, and the success of SPACE MARINE 2, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that kind of aggressive legal gatekeeping behavior again soon...) - They abusively price & market their products (they have the single highest priced miniatures in the entire wargaming hobby, frequently rely on FOMO events and bundling [even for rules and important items the community HAS to buy], relentlessly overprice in several regions across the world, and intentionally price gouge their books and rules, all while taking down any free access to any of those rules at the first given opportunity. There is no reason a single, unassembled and unpainted, mono-pose 32mm miniature should be priced at $45 dollars. That's insane.) - They have done so much damage to the Wargaming Hobby Community in their time (They are basically the EA of the Wargaming hobby. They drive medium sized wargames out of the market under walls of money, advertisement and litigation, create walled content gardens that discourage players from leaving them, have set terrible standards in the larger hobby like a lack of free-to-download rules & denial of third-party miniatures at their tournaments, and have gone so far as to literally not even call their hobby wargaming but the "WARHAMMER Hobby", so players dont accidentally stumble across the rest of the industry. Its BAND-AID bandage levels of market crushing brand power, and they abuse it constantly to the detriment of the entire hobby. Again, its basically the same level of industry damage as Activision or EA have done to the videogaming world). ... so yeah, again, I LOVE the setting & the world, and I've had a long standing relationship with the wargame property itself, but GW has a deathgrip on the franchise. Truth is, I dont want to steer more people towards them, or lose all the work I put into this webcomic project because GW's legal team is feeling a little overly litigious in advance of some new Netflix show or videogame or edition release.

HOWEVER, I have other options. Games Workshop doesn't corner the market on Space Marines with big pauldrons and dramatic flair. I COULD just set "Brothers" in a more creator friendly IP... like ONE PAGE RULES's GRIMDARK FUTURE setting, and without too much effort. While there would be some differences, it would still be the same tale of stoic battle brothers contending with isolation, dogma, and struggling with the concessions needed to survive in a hostile place. Hell, their super-human gene-sculpted super soldiers are literally called BROTHERS, so it's... kinda serendipitous, to be real with you. The folks at OPR are much smaller company and have infinitely better business practices. They market their products in a much more responsible and ethical manner, sell both 3d-printable miniature files and pre-printed miniatures themselves, their games are all miniature agnostic and well designed, and frankly, they actually give a damn about their fan creators. They even run Fan Creator Competitions (I just joined a Writing Jam they hosted a few months back! It was a blast), and give free miniatures and huge discounts to the winners. Generally speaking, they are the kind of tiny company I actually could see myself patronizing and supporting, amybe even working with at some point, and they are far closer to the way I'd prefer to see the wargaming industry develop in the future (I am NOT sponsored by OPR, by the way. Just wanted to make that clear. I wouldn't turn it down, not gonna lie, but as of time of this post, I've no support from either GW or OPR) And I know Im not the only one who's been making these calculations when working on their fan works. Bruva Alfabusa has moved on to working with friendly IPs, like their awesome World of Darkness series "Hunter: the Parenting" series, while the Exodite's creator has completely pivoted into working on their own grimdark IP, "PROJECT MORNINGSTAR", which is well worth a look, btw. The issue I face is that while I vastly prefer supporting OPR's GRIMDARK FUTURE and them as a company, I originally started this project as a 40K fanwork. And I know that, for all its many flaws, Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 brand name carries a lot of recognition and fandom power, and it's setting has a lot of personal meaning to me. OPR is growing and it's got a really passionate fandom, but its only a fraction the size of GW's juggernaut, and while I'm not creatively tied to either setting atm, I'd be a liar to not at least acknowledge and respect the sheer fandom gravity of the Warhammer 40,000 IP. And fancomics can live and die on the size and relative energy of their fanbases.

So that's my Conundrum.

Do I continue along the path I was already on and make this fancomic a WARHAMMER 40,000 story, facing the fact I'd basically be advertising for a company I hate and risking that if I ever managed to garner a big enough fanbase the GW legal might just pop in and shut me down, all in exchange for brand recognition? Or do I take a chance on my personal principles, set it in OPR's GRIMDARK FUTURE, tell the same story I was already excited to tell and support a company and a game that I actually think is worth talking about, but risk the smaller community and less passionate fanbase not being enough to get the fancomic off the launchpad in the first place?

I'm genuinely soul searching here, Voyagers. And I want your opinion.

The truth is, I know which way I want to go, but what do you think? If youre a creator / fan / artist / player / hobbyist of WARHAMMER 40,000, WARHAMMER, ONE PAGE RULES GAMES, GRIMDARK FUTURE, WARGAMING, FANCOMICS, FANWORKS, SCIENCE FICTION, or even just read your way through all of this and wanted to give me your opinion (thank you, by the way, that's incredibly kind of you) what do you think? 1 - How many works do you have on AO3?

oh god, 128! but this is an underestimate, because i've anon'd some older fics/fandoms hehehe. i've been 'round ao3 since 2012!

2 - What's your total AO3 word count?

498,649... now this is actually accurate. 300k of that is from 2020 until now. basically the pandemic got me on a writing kick.

3 - What fandoms do you write for?

SO MANY. 19 according to ao3, but right now? baldurs gate & redacted audios >:3 there is another halsin fic in the works...

4 - What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

oh god. okay. you'll get some older fics here: 1. got me on my best (bad) behaviour 2. Call me scent o' mental, but I'm crazy about you (teen wolf....) 3. all bark, no bite 4. devils and ghosts (frank castle / karen page!! love this one heh) 5. sweeter than honey (ofc halsin makes it ahaha)

5 - Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

YES. there are only a few exceptions, when I've written something that touches close to home / a sensitive topic.

6 - What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

hmm...bittersweet endings were my wheelhouse for a long time. OKAY. let's do this one: too little, too late. caroline forbes and klaus mikaelson, set at the end of the originals. yeah.

7 -What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

....nowadays, I mostly write happier endings sadhfjk lets go with: bioluminescence, which follows on from the events of blood moon (@/barbwrites) and takes marco on a roadtrip to see luminescent algae up close and personal. (it's a loveletter to a summer I spent in california during a really difficult period of my life, and this fic means a lot to me <3)

8 - Do you get hate on fics?

I've not gotten hate, but I've definitely had some interesting comments over the years, for a variety of reasons, usually to do with the person's personal views. (one story had the main character smoking pot to calm their anxiety, and someone was not happy with that)

9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

YEP. Smut with feelings is my FAVOURITE thing. I prefer sensual descriptions, because it is all about feelings and sensations with me. as an ace writer, I also like kink and monster fuckery heheheh.

10 - Do you write crossovers?

Not at all ahahahaha. Have I ever written a crossover? I don't think so. I love AUs though, and pacific rim AUs are one of my favourite concepts in fandom.

11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes, and it was teen wolf, and honestly not one of my best. it was a hatchet job, they took random paragraphs and spliced it / wrote around it? someone flagged it to me in a comment, and it was taken down. all in all, a very weird experience.

12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but gosh, that'd be cool! <- stealing from lexi, agreed, would be awesome <3

13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?

YES. It was FUN. It was a series of conversations between an estranged father and son, Colm and Milo Greer, with the incredibly talented @frenchiefitzhere (also tagging you for this meme!!). it's still one of my favourite things: An Honest Man Like Yourself

14 - What's your all time favorite ship?

ALL TIME FAVOURITE? How dare you. I love all my ships afjkdsfg Shakarian is pretty high up there. Kastle (karen page/ frank castle). All the werewolves from redacted. <3

15 - What's a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

ahhhh. okay. 'wander. wonder.' my poly longfic. don't hate me, but honestly, I've just not got the space for a longfic at the moment. never say never, but I've caught up with the chapters I had worked up, everything else is a vague outline. <3

16 - What are your writing strengths?

oof. I want to say character. most of the fun for me when writing is getting inside a characters head and figuring out their voice >:3

17 - What are your writing weaknesses?

Structuring longer, multi-chaptered stories - basically figuring out the pacing of it. I'm working on an original project, and I love it, but the first series of major edits will be breaking up my alternating POV sections into proper chapter breaks and letting myself linger more in moments instead of pushing forward (habits of a oneshot writer fdsds)

18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've been meaning to have my estonian friend critique my estonian, but I'm pretty positive the 'bond' I referred to is actually the money kind, and not the emotional attachment I'd been hoping to refer to hfjdkssfdg. I do as much research as I can, but it's best to run it past someone who speaks the language!

hehehehe naruto. yep. I was a naruto kid. first posted online in 2007......

20 - Favorite fic you've written?

WHAT A QUESTION. honestly, I love what I have been writing the last three years. I've really let myself just write what I want to read, and it's been great. i'm going to cheat, and say the original project I'm working on that I won't let anyone see heheheh. <3 it's got werewolves, kink and explicit consent, and spun out a whole verse for me to play with (and a fun MMF sidestory that I also need to finish...)
