a/n: basically, uh, my bestie and i saw a lovejoy concert this week and we've had mutual wilbur brainrot. thankfully, i'm an english major with just enough self confidence to write us some fics. enjoy.

summary: traveling made you sick, and close quarters mean everyones sick too.

It’s not like you had meant to get sick. Traveling always introduced you to germs, and staying in a tour bus meant close quarters with the rest of the band. Thankfully, you’d all gotten a small break over the weekend of travel and slept a lot as the tour progressed from Washington state to Utah. 

You’d almost banned Will from kisses, but that man had the best puppy dog eyes known to man.  But now, as the bus rolled into Salt Lake City, he was suffering the consequences of his actions in the form of a mild cold. He had a massive headache, but apart from a little rasp in his throat, his vocal chords weren’t under too much extra stress. 

It did take a bit of extra convincing to get Will out of the bunks and into sound check, but a few forehead kisses did the trick as you offered him a few ibuprofen and a bottle of water. 

“I feel bad, Will. Maybe kisses should have been banned.” You said quietly, watching the tower of a man crawl out of his bottom bunk. “Absolutely not, love. That’s the whole point of bringing you on tour.” He pulled you into a hug. “Can’t kiss over the phone.” He smooshed his lips into the top of your head, the action barely resembling a kiss. 

“Alright, well, don’t let me distract you any longer. You’ve got a whole load of people waiting on you.” 

“Yes ma’am.” He saluted as he moved around the bus, getting ready for sound check and the concert that would insue.

“Salt Lake City, how are we doing tonight?” Wilbur asked the crowed. The venue was packed, almost more that the other dozen places you’d been on tour so far. And the energy buzzed in the room, the audience screaming their heads off after the first song. 

“Salt Lake, I have a favor to ask of you. My beautiful girlfriend, whose hiding off stage-” Will gestured towards you and the crowd screamed. “- got me and Ash sick this weekend. So I am extremely unwell.” The room erupted in laughter and cheering. 

“As a side effect of this, my voice is very raspy. It’s great for me because my love thinks it’s sexy, but it’s not so great for singing. So I need you all to fucking scream to these songs.” The room vibrated with the volume of the cheers. You could see his grin from behind the curtains as he carefully began the chords to Model Busses.

Post-concert Will was your favorite Will, not that you love him any less normally. But after every gig he just buzzed with adrenaline when he got off stage. Tonight was no different. As soon as he got off stage he scooped you up in a hug and smashed his lips on yours. You indulged him for a moment, holding him tight despite the shirt clinging to his body with sweat. As soon as he pulled away, you spoke.

“You, mister, did not play my song!” You berated him as you helped him pull of the denim jacket he insisted on wearing. He laughed quietly, voice rougher han before he went on stage. “You promised you’d do it’s all futile acoustic tonight!”

“And you, my love, are being mean to a sick man.”

“Sick as a consequence of his own actions. Only one of us here can’t keep his lips to himself.” You fluffed his sweaty stuck hair off of his forehead before pulling him into a kiss. 

“Seems like a mutual problem to me, my dear.” He tried to pull you into another hug, the sweat on his skin cooling. You quickly pushed your hand to his chest. 

“Oh buddy, if anything else is happening between us tonight, you’re gonna need to shower first.”

“Well I thought you loved me, sweat and all.”

“I only love boys who play my favorite song at their concert. Like they promised.”

“That’s low, love. Really low.” 

“Yeah, we’ll talk about it  when you don’t stink.”

so you know that lovejoy anvil cat studio 4 vinyl of all the acoustic versions of are you alright? there were 3500 of them out there.

i really wanted one.

so yesterday i set out to find it. woke up at 6 am and went to my first record store option (closest, about 45 min away)

waited in the line of 25-ish people in front of me for an hour, was jamming out to cmwyl the entire time lmao

they start letting people in three or so at a time, the line gets shorter so i can look in the window of the store to try and find where it is in there.

now there’s 8 people in front of us in line. im shaking. super excited of course. my mom turns to me and shows me the ‘sold out’ sign on the store’s website.

i still had hope lmao

we get inside and of course its not there. someone else was there looking for it too (i feel so bad) and so store #1 was off the list.

apparently every store around us had only been given 1 record. 1!!!

however, we did not give up here.

we started heading even further away from home, another 45 mins to store #2. im sweating and bouncing my leg as fast as i can get rid of the nerves. im keeping the same website my mom had open (same store, different location) and its the only store (in my area, in that store) that still has one available. refreshed the page so if that goddamn green checkmark goes away we can just turn around.

we get to the store, i hop out the car and burst through the door, ask the guy at the register “can you help me find anvil cat by lovejoy???”

“im sorry, someone already has it in their hands”

i missed it by minutes.

15 minutes go by of me just wandering around the store, waiting for the very slim chance that they just decide they dont want it anymore and put it back (crazy idea) but instead i witness them putting the record down on the counter to purchase.

it was less than 20 feet way from me!!

right there!!

so i go back to the car and start crying. haven’t had food for water at all, all of it felt like an emotional roller coaster.

and then my dad buys one off of ebay.

Cause For Concern - Lovejoy [Acoustic Cover]

Okay in all honesty, I would rate Are You Alright? as a 6.5/10. It’s decent, but nothing really... sticks out as special? Like, don’t get me wrong, it’s good, but the lyrics aren’t anything remarkable, the instrumentation is pretty similar throughout the album, (except for Sex Sells - though I get that it can be hard to get that variation in only four songs,) the songs all follow the same traditional formula, and the mixing is odd. (Especially the bass, you can barely hear.) It’s not bad by any metric, but it’s pretty obviously a first album. It doesn’t experiment that much, which is fair. They were playing it safe.

Pebble Brain, though. I’d give at least an 8/10. There’s a large variation in different styles, and they experiment with form in You’ll Understand and The Fall. The instrumentation really shines in this - Ash’s bass is a Godsend and they seem to know that, leaning into it a lot in most of the songs. And the guitar work is much more impressive too, especially at the end of You’ll Understand and It’s All Futile. Lyrically... definitely an improvement. They actually express some opinions and touch on some deeper subjects. Also, they’re just wonderfully crafted. Emphasis on certain sounds, odd words that don’t often come up in conversation, and nice rhymes.

And I haven’t seen anyone mention this ever about Lovejoy, but their melodies are really refreshing. Upbeat, catchy, and simple, but still melodically interesting and not too repetitive! They don’t drill it in too much, just enough for it to get stuck in your head. Trumpets and guitar really work together for them in this - they definitely pick the right instruments for their melodies. And their harmonies are nice too; they have just a nice amount of edge and crunch. They’ve always played wonderfully with rhythms as well. Instead of one basic rhythm, they switch time, (like into half-time,) syncopate, and have a lot of points where they break to hammer in one chord, (drawing a blank on the term right now - like they do in One Day.) It really goes somewhere, which is a challenge, in composition. Their songs don’t ever feel ‘vertically developed,’ even the end of It’s All Futile where there’s many instruments layered. There’s always a horizontal drive to it, it always has a direction, all development flows from that motion. A lot of this comes from their skill with rhythms, and especially the bass, but also in melody-writing, having three or four different melodies leading into one another.

Even with more depressing, deep, angry lyrics, they manage to sound crisp and refreshing. That’s the best way I can think to describe their tone. Refreshing and crisp. Like summer.

Honestly, I’d say their weakest point is vocals, (other than mixing which I won't talk about because I don't know shit about it.) Wilbur’s voice has definitely improved even since Are You Alright? but it’s still kind of weak and breathy. And almost like he’s straining, in some songs? Perfume is definitely one of the better ones, where it seems to fit his range. The breathiness is fine in acoustic songs, but with Lovejoy’s full, loud instrumentation, it falls a little flat. He’s definitely letting loose a bit more, though, like in The Fall and Concrete. It’s nice to hear, and I bet it’ll get even better in the future.

Other than that, I think they could play with expectations a little more, in terms of form, harmony, etc. They have a direction, yes, but they rarely subvert it. Look at what happened when they went a different direction than expected in The Fall - it was amazing. But that’s a skill that comes with time and experience; they’ll get there eventually.

Overall. Poggers album.
