‘Love Me Do’ is the first song on the second side of The Beatles debut album Please Please Me. It was released as their debut single in October 1962 , with ‘P.S I love you’ as the B side. It was the also the first single with the bands line up we all know; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Previous recording sessions had included the early Beatles drummer Pete Best - until he was ousted by George Martin, the bands producer - and a professional session drummer to replace Ringo Starr called Andy White. Ringo Starr (n.d) was upset when he heard that George Martin had concerns about him too:

“I was devastated that George Martin had his doubts about me. I came down ready to roll and heard, 'We've got a professional drummer.' He has apologised several times since, has old George, but it was devastating – I hated the bugger for years; I still don't let him off the hook!”

Thankfully, Martin realised Ringo was not only a great drummer but had great rapport with the rest of the band. Three versions of the song were actually released with three different drummers and can be heard on The Beatles recordings; Anthology 1 (with Pete Best), Please Please Me and The Beatles Hits E.P (with Andy White) and Past Masters (with Ringo Starr) The single was released with Starr on drums, but the album version was with Andy White.

The bare bones of the song was written by Paul McCartney when he was only 16 years old and was supposedly about his then girlfriend Iris Caldwell, as well as taking influence from Elvis Presley's 1956 song ‘Love Me Tender’. John Lennon later helped fill out the song to include the bridge ‘Someone to love, somebody new' although John always maintained it was Paul’s song they are both credited as songwriters on the track. I chose the line ‘Love, love me do’ because it’s so honest and simple, it’s a plea to be loved. Love is something I think we all crave even though we don’t always want to admit it.

Love Me Do by The Beatles

“Love Me Do” is the Beatles debut song. This was the song that really started their rise to fame. When the single was originally released in October of 1962, it reached number 17. However, when it was released to the U.S. in 1964, it became a number 1 hit. The song was primarily written by Paul McCartney and co written by John Lennon. This song is still one of the Beatles very popular songs to this day.
