O jovem tem o dorso malhado de bolas amarronzadas, sem a garganta branca bem delimitada. Pontos marrons no peito e barriga. Mede cerca de 22 a 23 ccm. Não existe dimorfismo. A diferença entre o macho e a fêmea é notada pelo canto apenas e característica dos machos. . . Eles alimentam-se de minhocas e artrópodes. Reviram folhas caídas em busca de pequenos invertebrados e também se alimenta de pequenos frutos. Aprecia os frutos do tapiá ou tanheiro (Alchornea glandulosa). . . A sua reprodução se dá em agosto e estende-se até dezembro. Constrói um ninho apoiado em galhos ou forquilhas, às vezes em marquise e varandas de casas, usando uma mistura de raíses, barros e folhas na parte externa. Na parte superior fica a tigela funda de material vegetal mais macio. A fêmea choca de 2 a 4 ovos verde-azulados salpicados pardos, Os filhotes deixam o ninho em 17 dias. . . A fêmea retira ou engole os sacos fecais dos filhotes. . . É um dos maiores psitacídeos brasileiros, Medindo cerca de 90cm de comprimento e pesa cerca de 1,5kg. Sua face é cortada por fileiras de penas vermelhas. Na cabeça, nas costas e na barriga possui coloração também avermelhada, com uma faixa verde. Costumam andar em bandos ou em pares. Alimenta-se preferencialmente de sementes com polpas, na copa das árvores e em arbustos. Só no estado do Paraná consomem os frutos de mais de 13 espécies de plantas arbóreas, tanto nativas quanto exóticas. Gostam muito do fruto do buriti e coquinhos. . O ninho dessa arara é feito em ocos de árvores, mas ela também se aproveita de buracos em paredes rochosas para colocar os ovos, os quais são chocados apenas pela fêmea, que fica no ninho.
