I get why we all disliked his character by the end of season 2 (good writing, acting, and character development), but fans who are still so angry with Nathan and SO against him having a redemption arc here in season 3 perplex me so much. Realizing your fuck-ups and bettering yourself by finding the positives in the people and life around you and in turn helping those people to do the same are surface level themes of the show, and instead of engaging with that you’re going to roll your eyes and say the show should just abandon Nathan by the wayside? Another frequent theme is the ways we mask our insecurities and how often those defenses are actually damaging to ourselves and the people around us. Which, again, is prominent in So Many characters, but you just choose not to care when it's about Nathan? You watched Jamie's and Rebecca's (also well-written) whole turnaround stories but don't think Nathan deserves or could have the same thing, huh?

thought about what you said some time ago about lex and his Teeny Tiny Issue(s) regarding his feelings and it made me wonder if Ollie has ever seen past whatever sense or visage of Holding Yourself Together he constantly tries to uphold and how much he seems to be persistent on holding it up like it would kill him to do it again.

like. just a scenario with the two of them alone where lex lets himself be vulnerable for a moment and bears his heart down for a moment and ollie sees how much its covered in claw marks that are there from how much he had to restraint himself from showing vulnerability and any emotions that could've gotten him killed. just trying to hold it all in for so long where it was impossible to know if some of these were there for the sake of survival or because it's all he really knew how to do with these at this point. hoarding it all in, letting it boil aside and praying to anything, anyone that it won't kill him. and it won't kill him, oh goodness no. but it will make him feel like he *is* when the emotional hell boils over, and the fallout of everything he repressed will inevitably burst and not even his own heart will be able to hold it in anymore.

and ollie sees it all slowly boil over from the side, and it's scary. lex, for as much as ollie knows, was the only adult that truly matters. someone who acknowledged that ollie was subjected to growing up *fast* without much force because whatever disgraceful 'parents' the kid previously had didn't bat so much as an eye at the idea of "leaving a child to grow up on their own" and thought of it as bad. let the kid be on their own! surely it won't cause some emotional issues in the long run, no way.

so ollie sees it happening, and asks if lex is okay. if he feels *fine* or if he wants to at least say what bothers him. because the kid cares! who wouldn't! but for lex? little wittle lexicon, doing so much as confiding in the people most important to him? tsk tsk tsk, in your dreams, maybe.

so lex just lies through his teeth and says that he's fine. everything is under control, everything is fine and dandy, and whatever cathartic inferno thats slowly eating away at him is just nonexistent, so longer as he pretends that it does. but deep down, he isn't sure what to say to the kid. because for all the faith and all the appreciation he has for the poor bulb', there is just so much and so *little* that ollie can do in this situation that could lessen the emotional burden that lex has on his back. he would never burden the kid with something such as this, even if she would take a critical fire blast to the face for him. it hurts to know that ollie cares, because lex will quite literally *never* care for himself.

anyways yeah they've been on my mind lately. sorry for the ramble.

Ollie is just a kid. Lex doesn't want to put his hurt and pain anywhere near her (and he's got a million and one excuses for it). But Ollie is hurting too, and it would mean the world to her if the two of them could mutually confide in each other.

If the dark future has taught Lex anything, it's that "unnecessary" feelings get in the way of survival. To be soft and open and vulnerable is a death sentence. It's a hurdle that Lex has to pass if he ever wants to have deep and meaningful relationships (and something he isn't fully aware of having, given his amnesia). And Ollie is determined to drag him over it, kicking and screaming. That old man will be emotionally vulnerable if Ollie has any say in the matter. And the thing is, it did work... For a time.

But then, you know, Dusknoir happened. And then that hurdle turned into an obstacle course.

Ollie saw it happening in real time. Lex finally opened up a little bit, only for that newfound softness to be trampled over. Dusknoir's betrayal was more than just that--it was also a setback. Not only did Lex's willingness to be vulnerable get him hurt, but Ollie too. She's just a kid with a whole life ahead of her, she's more important than Lex... At least, that's what he thinks.

Lex closes himself off again. He can't stop and think about how he feels anymore. It's painful for Ollie to see, for her dad closest friend to turn into this shell of his former self. She can't stand to see Lex tear himself apart all for her sake, she loves him too much to allow that. But what can she do?

It all boils over eventually, but Lex isn't the first to pop. Ollie just wants her dad friend back. She's already lost so much. Lex doesn't think his presence means that much but it does and Ollie wants to smack him upside the head with it.

It doesn't help when Lex is reminded of his original mission with Grovyle (and its consequences). He doesn't need to be convinced to sacrifice himself. And then for him to disappear without so much as a warning to Ollie? It's too much. Tears mixed with despair and outrage, begging and demanding him to not leave.

Then she's alone again. Months on end of a horrid emptiness. The world feels just a bit quieter.

...Then one day Lex comes back. As if nothing happened. And it all comes back to her like a rush of ice cold water and shes running to him while crying and yelling and there's this terrible mix of joy and rage in her heart as she collides with him and oh thank the skies above that it's real and not a dream but how dare you leave me how dare you how dare you how dare you--

She's clinging onto him like her life depends on it, scared that he'll disappear again if she lets go or looks away, and she makes him promise that he won't leave again. Of course he says yes.

And when Lex sees Ollie jolting awake at night, plagued by nightmares and tearfully curling up closer to him, he thinks that maybe he ought to change something. If his disappearance could cause this, then...he needed to rethink things. He doesn't want to hurt her any more than he already has.
