what are some features of others that attract them from the outset? (for Felix Fae and Felix Pardus, if there's any differences?)

There are some subtle differences! Animal Crossing Felix is a bit more self-aware about what's considered attractive in the animal kingdom; Things like good feathers, a healthy coat, and etc.! These things are discussed verbally at length, about People. This also skews gender dynamics a bit iirc; many, many, many species have larger females and other atypical stuff! So there's more going on, but he's also more personality oriented. I'd like to think that he's drawn to sweeter men/people, so antagonistic bad guys have to work harder and be more direct, aka more physical, to turn him on. He'd be a lot more willing to say, comment that someone like sephiroth or bowser is hot, but there would also be no slowburn, as he's also willing to like. hit them with a shovel or spell or something. He's in a fighting tournament.

Meanwhile? In trainer verse, I think it's easier for him to develop rival-like ships; whether it's an antagonist, or actual rival. He's also still in the school system as essentially a college student, so like. soft rivalry. some Drayton style bullshit, the smarm. Dynamically speaking, his ship partners are probably echoing power struggles, even if mildly. Mayor Felix has admiring neighbors that flirt outright that he could have anytime, but the pokemon world is full of tension like that- even if it's just playful tension. So, he's probably even more into smugness, or people that're likely to wanna take care of him. More smug bastards.

Overall though, he likes nice muscles, thick thighs/ass, and a decently sized cock. He does like pretty men quite a lot- just a bit of well grooming.

A SEMI-REASONABLE 40 CHARACTER SMASH ROSTER

An exercise in indulgence and egoism, and posted as the same.

THE RULES:

1. Characters shall be semi-reasonable! Beatoriche I love you but this needs to be a roster composed of characters who could conceivably actually make it into Smash. They should be from video games, and ideally ones people care about.

2. Characters shall be gender balanced! I separated my picks into four categories: GUYS, GIRLS, and CREATURES AND CHARACTERS, TYPICALLY PLAYER, OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER (like Pikachu or the Animal Crossing Villager). the number of GUYS shall be EQUAL TO OR LESSER THAN the number of GIRLS. I set this restriction on myself and so should you.

3. Characters shall be 40 of them! but you could tell that from the title.

GUYS

MARIO - You have to have this guy. also like it's been like 20+ years since Sunshine can we not give him something other than FLUDD?

DONKEY KONG, LUIGI, NESS, BOWSER, FOX, WARIO - You also have to have these guys. I cut Captain Falcon, as we already had Fox as a Smash original character.

LINK - Someday we will be able to put Link in the CHARACTERS OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER list, but not yet.

KING DEDEDE - Sakurai made this so his faves get a little extra attention. I claim that same right.

SNAKE - Updated for MGSV, naturally.

SONIC (Palette Swap: SHADOW) - I really really don't care about these guys. I kind of actively hate them actually. but they deserve to be here, even if all their moves are the same (turning into a ball and the ball flies at you).

CLOUD - The iconic Final Fantasy pretty boy. Would I prefer Lightning? yeah. but this is the semi-realistic roster.

PHOENIX WRIGHT - I know, preaching to the crowd here. This guy is a tumblr darling behind only his boyfriend Miles Edgeworth. But they've put him in fighting games before! And he totally has a moveset, right? Presenting his badge as a jab, shooting OBJECTION and TAKE THAT! (HOLD IT! is a grab!), submitting paperwork and random items hoping and praying that they'll be accepted as evidence...

Barely missed the cut: Sans Undertale, Sekiro, Shulk, Solaire, Paper Mario, Sora.

GIRLS

SAMUS - You have to have this girl.

PEACH/DAISY - Ideally Daisy would get Luigified (this is the very technical term for when a Smash character starts out as a clone and then gets differentiated) as the Mario Sports Game Representation. But that probably wouldn't happen. Peach is fine. kind of

ZELDA (Breath of the Wild/Tears Of The Kingdom) - The opposite of the Smash Ultimate dynamic. Smash Lscholar Link is old-school Link; Zelda is newer Zelda. Like in Hyrule Warriors she fights using runes on her magic ipad/wii u pad/nintendo switch game console. Bombs, Ice Block, Ultrahand - and the ability to Recall all of them, sending them flying backwards along their trajectories when the attack is reinput. An evil zoner but let's be honest: she already is. Maybe she has a "take a picture" that can stun?

ISABELLE, ROSALINA - both need reworks. Isabelle in particular has the potential to be a Kirby for new players - but hitting with her is so hard that most try her for a round and play Toon Link instead.

BAYONETTA - No notes.

HORNET (Hollow Knight: Silksong) - Clear moveset, fan favorite, zero questions.

D.VA (Overwatch and, fine, Overwatch 2) - The single most popular Overwatch character by far, and a much needed female heavyweight character. Would translate pretty well to Smash as a pushy zippy tank-type.

EDELGARD VON HRESVELG (Fire Emblem: Three Houses/Three Hopes) - big smashy axe, avowed militant atheist, Vriska, Fire Emblem rep. Smash Lsclr's Ike. Slow but dangerous, with surprising range, much like Byleth; unlike Byleth she is an actual character. also her axe twirl has to be a taunt. Also she's canonically bisexual. which would make her the second bisexual smash character after Snake, and the third in my heart after Cloud Strife (Byleth isn't real).

REIMU HAKUREI (Touhou) - Iconic rep from possibly the single most important indie game series.

CHUN LI (STREET FIGHTER) - Honestly surprised they put Ryu in Smash. I feel like if you asked anybody to name a Street Fighter character Chun Li would be first?

UNDYNE (Undertale) - Fine. Susie (Deltarune) is also acceptable.

VI or JINX or SOME LEAGUE OF LEGENDS GIRL (LoL) - as with Sonic I don't care for these but they have undeniably earned their places. Arcane was better than it should have been and I really hope Mel Medarda survives into s2.

SABER (Fate/Stay Night) - It's Saber! I know this seems like a meme pick but I really do think she deserves to be here.

Barely missed the cut: Karlach or Shadowheart, The Silent, Arle Nadja, Vriska

CREATURES AND CHARACTERS, TYPICALLY PLAYER, OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER (like Pikachu or the Animal Crossing Villager)

PIKACHU - You have to have this thing. Brand recognition on par with Santa Claus or Jesus. A creature for sure, even if its tail indicates biological gender.

KIRBY - This is technically a Guy but in practice this is a creature. also I have one less Guy than Girl so I could put him there, but I chose not to.

YOSHI/BIRDO - Put a trans woman in Smash. She's just a Yoshi reskin and that's fine.

MARTH/LUCINA - The other Fire Emblem rep. Why does Awakening get like three characters? may have to make Marth a bit less floaty to make this work but they really should consolidate these two.

POKEMON TRAINER (Charizard, Ivysaur, Squirtle) - good on nintendo for making it possible to play pokemon trainer as a guy or girl.

POKEMON TRAINER 2 (Gengar, Gardevoir, Lucario) - We have so many pokemon and here's three more. swap out one of your choice for Jigglypuff or Mewtwo or Mimikyu or Greninja or whatever, as long as your substitution isn't from Kanto. This pokemon trainer is a bit more of a tryhard, and wears darker clothing. also their pokemon are category balanced: one is a guy, one is a girl, and one is a creature.

INKLING - Kind of a creature and definitely not of either cardinal gender. these kids squids are nonbinary. A good addition to smash; may they goop and bloop for many games to come.

Wii FIT TRAINER - Mix in Wii Sports and Ring Fit and whatever else.

ANIMAL CROSSING VILLAGER/MINECRAFT STEVE AND ALEX/PACMAN AND MS PACMAN - CHARACTERS OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER

NOAH AND MIO XENOBLADE (XENOBLADE 3) - Like Pyra and Mythra but less gross. Mio has faster short range chakram attacks and mobility; Noah has slower harder-hitting moves.

THE ASSASSIN (Assassin's Creed) - Snake represents Solid, Naked, and Venom; why can't The Assassin be Altair, Ezio, and whoever else?

omg if you ever post any headcanons or fic about that band AU i would love to see 👀 i have so many ideas that i never do anything with because i'm not much of a writer but i too could talk about idiavil and my other twst ships for hours so i totally get that lol. here's another bonus idiavil HC for you: idia feels really embarrassed about saying affectionate things face to face so he sends vil cute texts disguised as game notifications. things like "congratulations! you've reached max affection with idia! ❤". he also sends vil love letters with roses attached... in animal crossing. and then he secretly hopes vil never finds the time to open up his game and read them because he thinks he might die of embarrassment, but unfortunately for him, vil does read them and he sends a letter back every single time.

and okay so. iirc i made a kingdom hearts reference in that post but just mentioned xenoblade in the tags because it's so much less popular/recognizable. but i was originally going to make a reference to xenoblade chronicles 1. i love the whole series and if you like lengthy JRPGs with unique combat and wild stories then you'd probably love it too! but i feel like idia would love XC1 in particular because a major theme of that game's story is that it's about fighting for the freedom to choose your own future. it's about spending your life feeling like you're powerless to change anything, and then allowing yourself to see that that isn't true--that if you keep looking forward and choose not to give up, you can create a world where you can shape your own destiny. you can go the distance. i think it's a story that would really resonate with idia. now, do i think he would see these themes as being applicable to his own life in a realistic way? absolutely not lol, at least not before the events of book 6, but he'd love the fantasy of it. he'd also relate to shulk--the main protagonist of the game--partly for spoilery reasons and partly because shulk is a fucking nerd who resents having to go outside and would rather spend all day in his research lab working with machines. and now i've rambled on about a game you haven't played lol, but if it isn't obvious by now i highly recommend it! and kingdom hearts is my favorite game series of all time so i highly recommend it as well. fun fact: idia's voice actor, kouki uchiyama, also voices roxas in the japanese version of KH!

It really all depends, but you know that, on a basic level, I'm a sucker for blond anime boys for some reason. If they're the type to just smile mysteriously instead of answering a question about themselves, so much the better.

But I think my favorite characters in general are the ones who are determined to do what they think is right regardless of how painful or self-destructive it might be to do so, or how futile it might be overall (Hikigaya Hachiman, Lightning Farron, Siffrin). As you can see, I also really like characters who have to learn how to be vulnerable and learn how to (let themselves) express their feelings, especially with people they come to consider family.

I LOVE when characters are cheerful and never fully lose their optimism but have to acknowledge that they have been wrong wrong wrong and hurting people who they care about and let their friends help pick them up and learn and grow (Rex, and, in a way, Luke fon Fabre). But I also really love when characters just let themselves descend into their worst tendencies, acknowledging their own flaws while refusing to change them, just becoming a poisonous wreck incapable of forming meaningful comnections in favor of idolizing the self (Isamu Nitta, Albedo Piazzolla).

Of course, I also adore supremely cheerful characters whose lives are so fucking tough and to whom the world is almost nightmarish and who absolutely refuse to let that stop them from being happy and kind and helpful and naive (Marona, Sora). I love when characters who dont deserve that nightmare world decide to take revenge on it and then find the people they love and calm down and find peace and forgiveness in their hearts (Roxas, Axel, Walnut, Godot). But I also love when characters who wanted so desperately to do good end up so broken that they decide to become the villain (Big Boss, Lusamine, Guzma, Egil, Sprout).

Of course, I also adore characters who INSIST that they are evil but only if you frame it the right way (Laharl, Rozalin). I mean, characters who know they're evil but have a pathos about them get me too (Sigma, Metallia). But I think better than even those is when a nightmarishly powerful, truly deadful, overhwelmingly evil character decides to allow themself to change and be changed and become better people (Killia, Lambda).

But shoutouts to idealists who fall and never comfortably fit into villainy (Jin), idiots with ahoges who Blue Screen over something truly devastating happening to them only to decide their own new identities and throw off the reigns of the patrons who had for so long been manipulating them (Yumihiko Ichiyanagi, Shulk), and the characters who the developers didn't even realize they were queercoding (or maybe they did) who let us read so much pining into them it hurts (Reyn, Neku Sakuraba).

Also I love love love love LOVE when a character will sacrifice themself to protect someone, even if it's fucking STUPID of them and all they need to do is TRUST PEOPLE (Simon Blackquill), and characters who trust the protagonist but who the protagonist just can't trust implicitly (Klavier Gavin), and those very protagonists (Apollo Justice), and, yeah, I love a lot of characters and types.

I just love complexity and messiness and idealism in the face of despair (Makoto Naegi) and despair in the face of hope (Nagito Komaeda). I love bastards who know they're bastards, I love good people who fought long and hard to be good people and who will never acknowledge it (Solid Snake), I love good brothers (Gladion), I love cute friends (Hau), I love happiness and joy and I love sadness and despair. I love a lot. I have a lot of love.

Like, quick elaboration of what I mean by Xenoblade 2 copium. Also, obviously this doesn't apply to ppl who aren't stupid and defensive about criticism over a video game. But when I say that the copium is "misconstrue all criticism to be bigotry." I mean, like, you realize you can just say "honestly doesn't bother me" if you have to say anything. No need to make shit up.

And, like, the example with the character designs, it's like, I've heard shit like "ain't it sexist how everyone complains about Pyra's design but not Zeke's?" As if Zeke didn't actually have an acceptable character design. Or ppl responding to the criticism that 2's character designs prioritize sex appeal to straight men over literally anything else and then going "let women express themselves, sexist :/" As if there's any real bodily autonomy for a fictional fucking character. Or ppl going "Dahlia's design is gross" and then responding with "she was drawn by a woman therefore she can't be an instance of the artist jacking off to anime tits." Which, is a deeply stupid argument. Like, there's this weirdness where you can imply 2 is sexist and then copium ppl go "no u."

And then a lot of other criticisms go in a similar direction. Rex is a bad protagonist because his narrative arc isn't satisfying. There are a lot of reasons for that, such as him lacking a compelling reason to be part of the plot, his character motivations being really static, him embodying a really generic archetype of protagonist without having a particularly compelling spin on it, the fact that the plot keeps driving him into a wall before making something up on the fly to bail him out (which becomes an issue starting around Chapter 4), the fact that he's used to undercut multiple far more interesting character arcs because he's such a nice guy that Pneuma's and Nia's deeply rooted traumas or the imperialistic tension of Mor Ardain simply vanish instead of being properly explored, the fact that he probably shouldn't have been written to be a kid considering that some of the most important parts of his character are his *adult* love interests and the fact that he has a highly dangerous job that he's super experienced at doing, the fact that the English voice direction and acting just undercuts every dramatic moment involving the character, and a million other things that aren't on the top of my head. Criticize any of these things and you'll be met with deflections. Like "oh Shulk's not very good quit being a Xenoblade 1 purist" or "let men feel things the protagonist is allowed to fail sometimes" and other stuff that's more of a stock response than a real argument.

Fandom arguments devolving into stock arguments is pretty common as a whole. Just kinda dumb how often the arguments around 2 devolve into stock arguments that specifically misconstrue real-world issues.

Personal I’m not a fan of Pig, Goat, Banana Cricket either, because what Phantomstrider said, it was trying to ape the Ren and Stimpy style of like how gross this is. Especially how ugly the show is. But I do know that user. He’s a good friend to me since he has talked a lot about birds. Even when talk Nintendo, he always likes talking about the birds in Pokémon and Animal Crossing, and for Star Fox all he likes is Falco Lombardi who is also my brother’s favorite character besides Shulk. A. Ships that you currently like a lot.

Recently a friend got me into Xenoblade Chronicles and so I've been rotating a Reyn/Shulk/Alvis love triangle in my brain...I just think that little white-haired twink was born to be a total homewrecker, idk lol! I played the sequel first and while I don't hate the canon straight ship (really! I actually think it's pretty decent) I also really liked some of the yuri bait scenes between Pyra and Nia...to the point that I am Picturing an AU in which Nia becomes Pyra's driver instead of Rex (however I am not so obsessed with the game that I could write it myself). Otherwise I haven't had a ton of ships on the brain lately (but Valjean/Javert will always have my heart)

K. What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Ange Ushiromiya...she's just like me fr. Outstanding arc. Outstanding character. Basically the core of Umineko's themes despite not showing up until episode 4. She's everything. Close second goes to Reimu Hakurei for being a Grouchy McGrouchypants who everyone nevertheless cares for deeply. She didn't find a family, the family found her (despite her best efforts).

N. Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

We need more BL. We always need more BL. If the cast is entirely female then genderbend your ship and now you have BL. XC2's biggest flaw is its lack of viable BL in its party. XC1's biggest flaw is Fiora existing and impeding my Reyn/Shulk/Alvis love triangle (not to be a 2000s anime fan about it but to be a 2000s anime fan about it).

W. A trope you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

Honestly nothing really comes to mind here? I believe tropes are what you make of them and I think I have more issues with people's Takes on tropes than I do with tropes themselves ("enemies to lovers is weird and abusive" and its cousin "enemies to lovers is weird and abusive if straight" being some of my least favorites). X. A trope you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

Look if you're shipping enemies to lovers there's probably some level of narrative foiling going on there that is just so thematically and psychologically rich that it is going to drive me feral (yes this is about Valjean/Javert)

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I grew up with the first Xenoblade funnily enough. I am a big fan of large 100 hour JRPG epics, and this was my first exposure to one that I experienced not too long after moving to Florida when I was around 10 to 11 years old. It was probably my first mature video game or really first mature piece of media in general that I got really invested into. I can probably attribute it partially to my love of the Persona franchise, a similar set of long mature JRPGs. That being said, I am well aware of the sequel's reputation. When the game first came out, the first thing people took to was the character designs. Even to this day, I think it is reasonable to conclude that Pyra is the most well known character from Xenoblade, even surpassing Shulk, the protagonist of the first game (both even got into Super Smash Bros!), and this almost entirely ironic, as most of the criticism this game gets is pointed towards her chest size. No real way of avoiding saying that huh. I wanted to tell that story because when the game first came out, I had the console to play it and obviously the first game meant a lot to me, but even in my young 12 year old brain I was too embarrassed to ask my mom for the game, as even know among the first thing you see when you google about xenoblade are people poking fun at the 'mature' character designs. Nonetheless these memories all came rushing back to me upon seeing the module being about 'objectification - xenoblade chronicles 2'. That being said, thank god this is about objectification with regards to nature, so hopefully no discussions about Pyra will be had. As for actually talking about the topic at hand, I do think it is interesting to think about this quote from the article provided in class; "no species has destroyed the habitat of so many other species" in regards to humans. It makes me wonder that, I don't think humans are any more unethical or opportunistic than other animals, so I think the only factor that could affect this is that simply humans are the most intelligent. This makes me think though, are intelligent beings eventually doomed to do harm? Obviously not all, but does having the opportunity ultimately lead to destruction in many cases? Partially related, but many serial killers tend to be very smart people. I think that intelligence could create a natural barrier between you and other beings.
