Week July 13 - 19
Highlights:
On Monday we had the last quarter moon in Aries
The 17th which is a Friday has a big opportunity for healing with Chiron rx sextiling Eros.
Wow this is super late I don't even know what to say but if you knew what was happening in my life you would understand. TBH I shouldn't even make this about my life cause I am sure with these damn transits all of our lives are going THROUGH IT. By now you guys would probably have felt the energy of either Chiron's retrograde or Ceres's retrograde. We are having dreams of trauma we thought we overcame just pop back up in our lives from no where. We are feeling the utmost need to be nurtured and make a loving home or safe space. We are feeling moody as fuck. I mean, what an end to Cancer season. It's only going to be more emotional and dramatic come Leo season. Though it's just mess central this week (we are all going to feel moody and shitty together) some of the lunar transits are helping us with healing, shedding what we don't need and making way for the new lunar cycle to commence.
Notes: Times are set to UTC. Since this is late I did not write recommendations for the 13th and 14th.

LAST QUARTER MOON IN ARIES Venus in Gemini trine Juno in Libra ☾♈ Moon Squares Sun in Cancer and Jupiter rx, Pluto rx and Saturn rx in Capricorn ☾♈ Moon Opposite Juno and Sappho in Libra ☾ VOC 15:54 - 17:34 ☾♉ Moon enters Taurus
Energy: You might have noticed that the last quarter moon on Monday was intense yet productive. With the last quarter moon, we are forced to reflect on the lunar cycle beginning with the Cancer new moon solar eclipse that occurred right after the Summer Solstice and how our lives have progressed during this chapter. It's a time to wrap up loose ends and take stock in what we've learned. With the final quarter moon in Aries we may feel that additional push to get things done. The moon was also squaring Jupiter rx, Pluto rx and Saturn rx highlighting inner tensions with inner growth, inner power and responsibilities we need to attend to. It could have been a stressful day if we weren't prioritizing any important tasks that we have been neglecting. With the moon opposite Juno and Sappho in Libra, we could have noticed that new desires and attractions could have come into our lives triggered by events, people or any external influence. Though this day has passed (sorry for posting late again), the last quarter phase will influence this week as the lunar phase wanes into it's crescent.

Sun in Cancer opposite Jupiter rx in Capricorn Venus in Gemini trine Juno in Libra (Last Day) ☾♉ Moon Conjunct Uranus in Taurus ☾♉ Moon Sextiles Mercury in Cancer and Ceres rx in Pisces
Energy: There is great opportunity for inner expansion, epiphanies and growth to happen today with the sun opposite Jupiter rx in Capricorn. With Chiron rx and Ceres rx this transit's theme can feel intense as we may feel inclined to address any sources of unchecked emotions, hidden trauma and pain which could be brought up from the depths of our soul from this Sun and Jupiter rx opposition. Healing can come with ease with the Moon conjunct Uranus in Taurus that can help bring inner change and shifts to our personal lives. With the moon sextiling Mercury in Cancer and Ceres rx in Pisces we will have the push to reflect on our inner emotional and mental landscapes and understand where we may feel emotionally neglected or in need of care. It may have felt like an emotionally heavy day which is good to take some time away and do some self care. With Venus trining Juno though we may have missed the energy of this beneficial trine, it would have been a great time to channel what you needed to heal or feel whole in your life.

Sun in Cancer opposite Pluto rx in Capricorn ☾♉ Moon Trines Jupiter rx and Pluto rx in Capricorn ☾♉Moon Sextiles Sun in Cancer along with Neptune rx in Pisces
Energy: Today's energy has the potential to be intense with the Sun opposite Pluto rx. This transit has the potential to bring about extreme change that could result in crises with self-esteem, ego death or a breakdown in character caused by external events. This could be caused by a self-destructive character trait or by someone who is manipulative, dominating and controlling. With pluto's retrograde it could feel karmic and like it's a time to let go in order to be reborn again. It could also bring up memories of the past that you could be holding on to that has wounds or negative habits that have sprung from it and will force you to confront those emotions so that you can shed them away and move on. Things like this will more likely happen if you are stubbornly resisting change or have been engaging in some habit that is destructive to yourself and others. Though this may all sound intense there will be a boost of inner power with the moon trining Jupiter rx and Pluto rx in Capricorn. With the moon sextiling Neptune rx in Pisces we can feel the push to work on our source of faith and spirituality which could be brought to our attention during the course of these events. With the moon sextiling the Sun in Cancer we will feel the incentive to work on any projects that need to be wrapped up or shed and clean away what we no longer need in this cycle.
Recommendations: Cleansing the home, shadow work and clearing out old beliefs you no longer need. Energy work to help raise your magic and energy from within. Reflecting on your magical and spiritual path and seeing what beliefs may no longer serve you. ____________________________________

Venus in Gemini squares Ceres rx in Pisces ☾♉ Moon Trines Saturn rx in Capricorn ☾ VOC 3:21 - 5:19 ☾♊ Moon enters Gemini ☾♊ Moon Conjunct Eros in Gemini ☾♊ Moon Trines Sappho in Libra ☾♊ Moon Sextiles Mars and Chiron rx in Aries
Energy: Tomorrow may feel a bit moody as the overall theme will be influenced by Venus in Gemini squaring Ceres rx in Pisces. We may feel low self esteem, lack of love and a need to care for ourselves. Though this transit may feel unpleasant it's a good time to reflect on what's wrong, what you need in order to feel valued and feel loved and secure in life. It's a good time to do divination to explore your inner world and journal.
The moon will trine Saturn rx in Capricorn making this an excellent window of time to wrap up any projects and tend to responsibilities. You may get a boost of good work ethic especially when it comes to tending to tasks that will help you work on your inner foundations and long term stability. It will do a brief void of course then enter Gemini shifting the mood to a more social and curious nature. It will conjunct Eros which can help us connect to our desires and understand that source of drive from within. Additionally it will be amplified by the fiery sextile with Mars which can be like gasoline to fire with our energy to do things and get stuff done. It's an excellent time to take action. Additionally the moon will trine Sappho in Libra which means there is luck and benefits if you try to strive towards your genuine interests that help you feel more true to yourself. Lastly with the moon sextile Chiron rx in Aries there is opportunity for healing repressed emotions and trauma. It's a good time to make amends with the past and address any emotional wounds we may still be carrying. This can be useful with the Venus and Ceres retrograde square.
Recommendations: An excellent time to get work done and wrap up projects today. Also though the energy may feel moody there is opportunity for healing so the negative emotions that come up could be good indicators or signs to where you need to focus that energy towards. Lastly you can also do healing by focusing on the things in life that make you feel alive and authentic. The Moon and Sappho trine along with the moon conjuncting Eros can reconnect you to a part of yourself that makes you feel whole and true. ____________________________________

Chiron rx in Aries sextiles Eros in Gemini ☾♊ Moon Conjunct Venus in Gemini ☾♊ Moon Squares Ceres rx and Neptune rx in Pisces ☾♊ Moon Trines Juno in Libra ☾ VOC 21:14 - 2:24
Energy: There will be a big push for finding solutions and healing within with Chiron rx in Aries sextiling Eros in Gemini. We will feel the push and desire to examine emotions that we've been suppressing that has been linked to trauma and try to overcome that pain. It will be a very contemplative yet proactive day. The moon will join with Venus in Gemini which can bring a mood of pleasantness, pleasure and harmony. Feelings of how we may feel loved and valued may come up and highlight the themes of inner healing. The moon will also square Ceres in retrograde which can bring about a harsh window of time where areas in our life where we feel a lack of nurture may come up and we will feel pressured to do something about it. With the moon squaring Neptune in Pisces we may find our spirituality coming into question and how we connect with our faith and creativity. The moon squaring Neptune in Retrograde could help bring up how we may find inspiration and faith to overcome pain and trauma as Chiron rx and Ceres rx may bring up these themes for us to heal. Lastly the moon will trine Juno in Libra which is a beneficial window of time for us to connect with anything we value or need to commit to. This is always a pleasant window of time where a romantic interest or lovely opportunity may pop it's head open. If you see the door opening, then don't ignore it's potential!
Recommendations: It's a good day for shadow work and divination with the chiron rx and Eros sextile. We may feel called to do some intense inner healing. With the moon squaring Neptune rx we may feel called to work on our craft and examining the root of it. With the moon trining Juno in Libra and conjunct Venus it's a good time for love and romance magic especially self love magic in these times.

☾♋ Moon enters Cancer ☾♋ Moon Opposite Saturn rx in Capricorn
Energy: Today is another touchy and moody day in a string of moody days as the moon enters Cancer. It's a good time to tend to yourself, your home and to do some kitchen magic to make yourself feel more nurtured and tend to your emotions. However today will have a window of binding time where the moon will be opposite Saturn rx in Capricorn. This will bring a sense of burden to you where you will feel like previous tasks or things you've been neglecting or procrastinating on may come back to haunt you. Past work you've agreed to working on could be knocking on your door among the hundreds of other things you have to get to. Or you may feel like external events are forcing you to review all that you've built up or worked on in the past and how well of a job you've done and if you felt you haven't been doing a good job or have been slacking or binded by this whole lock down and pandemic you could feel weighed down during this moment. It's a good time to gain perspective and see what you need to do to make ends meet. It's a good time to use magic to attract opportunities to help with these tasks and roll up your sleeves and get to work.
Recommendations: You may feel a bit weighed down by this day but magically it's a great day to do some bath magic to nurture yourself, kitchen magic, tend to the home and your emotions. With the opposition it's a great time to channel Saturn for help. Though you may feel burdened, using that energy can help you get the work ethic and skills you need to overcome your obstacles.

Mercury in Cancer squares Sappho in Libra Neptune rx in Pisces sextiles Vesta in Cancer
☾♋ Moon Conjunct Mercury in Cancer ☾♋ Moon Opposite Pluto rx and Jupiter rx in Capricorn ☾♋ Moon Squares Chiron rx and Mars in Aries and Juno and Sappho in Libra ☾♋ Moon Trines Ceres rx in Pisces ☾♋ Moon Sextiles Uranus in Taurus
Energy: We may feel called to re-align our devotions and goals with our magical paths and spirituality today as Neptune rx in Pisces sextiles Vesta in Cancer giving us that incentive. As the moon is in it's waning phase we may clear out beliefs that no longer serve us and reconnect to our core goals and devotions and understand how our faith has been influenced by that. Additionally Mercury will square Sappho bringing about tension and reflection in areas of life that reflect our genuine interests and help us to feel authentic and our whole selves and how we may incorporate more of that into our daily mindset. If you have been denying yourself this access because you feel that it's unattainable or like stepping off a beaten path then these overall themes may question you to figure a way how.
The moon will be doing a lot today as it wraps up it's cycle in Cancer season before we enter Leo season. Overall we will feel the need to reflect on this Cancer season's lunar cycle and how our lives have shifted under the eclipses and wrap up any unfinished business or healing that needs to be done before moving on. Though the moon will progress through several degrees, all of these aspects with other planets are within orb of each other, so the chapters will overlap into a bigger theme. First the moon will conjunct Mercury in Cancer and opposite Pluto rx in Capricorn. It will be an emotionally cathartic window of time where we may feel ease with expressing our feelings and having a clear understanding of them where as Pluto rx can bring external events that can trigger deeper insight to our souls and connection with our inner power, deep subconscious emotions and shadow selves. Facing our shadow in this time and examining those feelings can bring helpful insight that can help us heal later. Next the moon will square Sappho bringing an emotional period of reflection upon the things that deeply resonate with us and make us feel authentic and genuine and how we can reconnect with those areas of ourselves. Often we can even deny these aspects of ourselves to fit into conventional society or expectations others have but it's important to be true and authentic to yourself and this aspect will force us to reflect on how we can keep this genuine connection strong. If it is a matter of trauma holding your back or fear of rejection or any fear that is holding you from being your true self, the moon will next square Chiron rx in Aries and be opposite Jupiter rx in Capricorn. This window of time can feel a bit harsh like you will be forced to reflect on previous trauma and buried emotional pain that could be holding you back yet there is a potential for inner expasion and truths to be uncovered which could help you understand yourself on a deeper level and that honesty can be invaluable moving forward on our journey of self healing during Chiron and Ceres's retrogrades. There is a chance for positive change with the moon sextiling Uranus in Taurus giving us the push to break habits, change our living space and personal lives. Whether that is to let go of painful feelings or allow opportunities for us to live our fullest potential in, this window of time will encourage us to make a change. Lastly the moon will square Mars in Aries, Juno in Libra and trine Ceres rx in Pisces bringing up frustrating feelings regarding our commitments and if we are devoting our energy towards things that reflect our values and that resonate with us. The Mars square can bring up frustrations like we are bound by current circumstance and can cause us to act rashly but it's a good time for reflection and shedding especially since the moon is waning and about to enter a new moon phase where we can set our intentions for the next cycle. With the moon trining Ceres rx it's an opportunity to put magic or action towards curating a reality that makes us feel safe and nurtured. The mars square can bring up exciting and passionate ideas surrounding this along with the Juno square which can highlight where we would truly desire putting our energy towards. Channeling those built up energies into a spell using the Ceres rx trine can put out a lot of energy towards manifesting that reality you may crave. (A lot of people I know during this time are craving making a dream home and I am having friends message me about their witch community ideas so this is a good window of time).
Recommendations: It's a good time to reflect and shed away what you no longer need as this moon wanes into a new moon. There is a lot of healing to be done, a lot of shedding to be done and a lot of changes that can take place. As the moon enters it's new moon phase it's a good time to reflect on what you do want to manifest and focus on for the next lunar cycle.

what i learned from unlearning everything that i know
lessons from middle school, aurora, and beyond.
at the age of fifteen, my mom forced my brother and me to leave our home in hayward, ca upon discovering that my dad had been using meth again and wasting all of his money on catfishes on the internet.
my mom and dad had been separated for longer than my brother and I were aware of, but my mom finally had the courage to really leave him in july of 2011. she loved him her entire life, but she was done taking care of someone that wasn’t taking care of her. she was done taking care of someone who didn’t love her enough to take care of himself. she was done.
while this seems incredibly simple, leaving hayward prompted what would turn into a 7 year identity crisis.
as an outcast at every school i transferred to, i found a community on this website with my best friends from middle school and random strangers who loved harry potter and other fandoms as ridiculously as we did. true commitment to friendship would transcend from anonymous messages on tumblr to mutual follows on twitter. and here we are: in the age of twitter.
upon switching up different meds, after over a decade of looking for mental and emotional stability, i found out that i have bipolar-1, which still doesn’t make that much sense to me, but i’m beginning to understand it more than i did before.
i’m grateful to have been obsessed with star wars when i first saw revenge of the sith on opening night because of my tita and her husband’s work perks. i loved padme and she was my first crush but also my first example of a strong girl in mainstream film in addition to mulan (bruh i used my mulan costume for like 3 years and never gave a single HECK). i would then beg my dad to take me to blockbuster to watch the original trilogy, where i met carrie fisher/princess leia, who would radically transform how i saw the world and myself.
i grew up with my tita and tito. they took care of me when they were in college, and they’re still taking care of me now. i want to be able to take care of their kids and love them as much as they loved me growing up. i love them with all that i am and all that i can give.
i studied politics because i wanted to make sure that my younger cousins and my baby brother would have a better world to grow up in than i did. it seems that my undiagnosed mental illness of nearly 14 years has been exacerbated by the political climate we live in today in 2018.
i learned so much about life by learning about my own history, and i hope that everyone has this opportunity in their lifetime. it feels great, and the only one who seems to really get it is ariana grande.
so here are 14 things i learned from being mentally ill and emo while being passionate about wanting to make the world a better and more habitable place.
1. don’t trust the feds: a lot of 2nd amendment boys actually don’t trust the government as much as people think, and the 2A comes from settlers’ distrust in colonial Britain. the problems we see today are because the GOP has lured these same people and their kids (and their kids) into their corner by advocating for organizations like the NRA; gun control has reached the Supreme Court, but the 2nd amendment took precedent (i believe). gun control must come from the state and local governments, but political participation in these arenas are very low, especially for younger voters. i, as someone who has been involuntarily hospitalized despite voluntarily seeking medical help, am not allowed to buy a gun in the state of california for 5 years. and honestly, i really don’t care because i don’t want to need a gun anyway, but the poor and the middle class in the south feels that they need guns.
2. stay woke: deray said this nearly everyday after michael brown was shot by darren wilson in ferguson, missouri. michael brown was my wake up call to reassess my complacency in the status quo and my participation in reinforcing anti-blackness. in the bay area, the n word was used so casually in places like union city/hayward that we became so desensitized to it. it’s still used casually, but non-black people like myself have no agency in saying it because we’re not black. it’s as simple as that. i began noticing how my family reacted to what would turn into the Black Lives Matter movement, and for the first time, i felt that i could no longer trust my relatives if they were complicit in the murders of black youth simply because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. i couldn’t even talk to them without crying because of how upset i got from the anti-blackness i would hear. i began to isolate myself and found community on twitter.
3. our youth is a reflection of how good things were and how good things can become if we learn to build community: in addition to the community i found on tumblr through avatar, harry potter, and the beatles, i found community with all the losers who had xbox’s instead of ps3′s. we would hang out and play search and destroy (which i still cannot succeed in after all this time smh agjhgarhdfhre) or 1v1 each other on rust. my nerd friends would let my brother and I play with them regardless of how much we sucked, and they hyped me up even when my KDR was trash. these friendships would then transcend from mw2, halo 3, and into runescape. my brother is now really good at overwatch, and the friends i made in middle school are also really good at overwatch. the difference now is that they’re making money off of it, and i’m just like, “let’s get this bread, nerds!” thank you for being there for me even though i sucked at everything i tried doing. i was reminded of this when i watched “mid90s” by Jonah Hill. our youth was such a pure period of time, but it was also the time we lost ourselves through imposing harmful social norms onto each other, such as the idea that a girl cannot be “just friends” with a boy. but - here’s the kicker - i’m queer, and i don’t really like cis-het men hahahahahahahahaha but whatever.
4. becoming american made me forget who i am: our immigrant parents teach us that the only way is to assimilate into white America, which is essentially what happened to black and brown people following the civil rights movement. the notion of egalitarianism/equality has been nothing but harmful for all of us nonetheless, fueling debates on affirmative action and pitting black people against asian people. one of my best friends from elementary school is in prison for trying to make a living with the resources and skills made available to him. he was apprehended in thousand oaks. he is a black man, and we grew up in the same environment, but his life has been so different since we were in elementary school. the concept of equality/egalitarianism stemming from civil war gains (13th-15th amendments) has manifested into the racial inequality we see today; in other words, the idea that white americans and POC are equal has been harmful because this has never been true and continues to be untrue. my filipino friends and i would get bullied by white latinos for not speaking english in america, which is why i learned to hate myself and my culture. i love myself and my culture, and i am fighting so that i can return home to the philippines someday.
5. our bodies are different, and that’s okay: can y’all believe that i got bullied for not having boobs in the 3rd grade? this is what happens when young girls are sexualized so early. boys participate in this, and they turn out to be shitty boyfriends later on. girls will be girls. girls just wanna be treated like human beings instead of sexual objects. i don’t think this needs to be explained further.
6. america is a settler-colonial state turned global power, and that is problematic: this country began with the murders and deaths of indigenous people because of imperalistic pursuits. it was built on the backs of slave labor from africa. it was reinforced by colonialism through the conquering of countries such as the philippines. we’re socialized to believe that there’s no place like america and that america is such a good place to be in, but that is only true for white Americans and POC who have integrated into white American suburbs.
7. know history, know self: - jose rizal
8. if my life wasn’t funny, it would just be true, and that is unacceptable - carrie f. fisher
9. at times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of - carrie f. fisher
10. rebellions are built on hope - princess/general leia organa + jyn erso
11. we have nothing to lose but our chains - assata shakur
12. keep ya head up - tupac shakur
13. everything i’m not made me everything i am - kanye west
14. i remember you was conflicted
misusing your influence
sometimes i did the same
abusing my power full of resentment
resentment that turned into a deep depression
found myself screaming in the hotel room
i didn’t wanna self destruct
the evils of lucy was all around me
so i went running for answers
until i came home
but that didn’t stop survivor’s guilt
going back and forth trying to convince myself the stripes i earned
or maybe how a-1 my foundation was
but while my loved ones was fighting the continuous war back in the city
i was entering a new one
a war that was based on apartheid and discrimination
made me wanna go back to the city and tell the homies what i learned
the word was respect
just because you wore a different gang color than mine’s
doesn’t mean i can’t respect you as a black man
forgetting all the pain and hurt we caused each other in these streets
if i respect you, we unify and stop the enemy from killing us
but i don’t know, i’m no mortal man
- kendrick lamar

Crickets From Democrats and Media About Chicago Gun Violence
Democrats Drag Out Their Soapbox Every Time Some POS White Boy Shoots A Gun, But Blacks and Minorities You Get Crickets From The Hypocrite Left
After another school shooting it's not shocking to read the left tweeting out their typical 'something must be done about guns' diatribe bullshit. What you won't hear from these hypocrite POS's is the least bit of outrage about the mass murder happening in Chicago every single day. For all their liberal gun bluster, Chicago has proven that there is only one solution. To combat senseless gun violence, an armed law abiding citizen is the only way to protect law-abiding citizens from criminals. I doubt that the POS 17-year-old would have walked into Santa Fe High if he knew someone was inside ready to shoot back. For all the leftist talk, the liberal loony toons never propose anything that would actually have stopped the school shootings in Santa Fe, or Parkland, or the Texas Church shooting or....... The sad truth is everything a lefty gun control lover could propose has been done tried by previous Chicago Mayors and that includes their latest Loony Toon Liberal Mayor. Here's a short list of current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's brilliant fails: He’s fired and hired multiple police superintendents He’s tried (unsuccessfully) to eliminate gun stores within city limits He’s tried (unsuccessfully) to keep shooting ranges out of his town. He fought concealed carry He's outlawed citizens wearing bullet proof vests or any gun protection for that matter. He’s tried paying gang bangers with tax dollars in hopes they would stop banging... His mom? In September 2016, Rahm Emanuel announced the city would spend $36 million in youth mentoring efforts, policing strategies and gun legislation as his plan to fight and prevent crime. In 2017 there were 3,566 shootings. Yes that was down from the 4,369 shootings in 2016. Except you would need to overlook the fact that 2017 ranked #2 all time and had almost 600 more shootings than in 2015. So if you want to claim success... Good luck! Number of REPORTED shootings in Chicago 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2,518 2,186 2,581 2,981 4,369 3,566 Rahm Emanuel's latest scheme to end the shooting gallery is almost as ridiculous as Chicago voters year after year electing yet another corrupt and/or inept Democrat to run America's third largest city. Rahm's big idea to cut down on the approximately 600 homicides committed within the city each year? Punish banks who make loans to weapons manufacturers. But as usual, the Democrats never think their "Big Idea" through. Chicago's financial situation is in shambles, and they are close to $40 Billion dollars in debt. That kind of shortfall equates to 1970's NYC financial ruin level. I'm just spitballing here but I don't think it's a great idea to spit in the face of the only institution that is preventing Chicago from becoming the next Detroit. Crickets Where is all the over the top hyperbole from David Hogg, Rosie, Alyssa Milano, CNN, MSNBC, The Big Three fake News Networks, The DNC, The DCCC, and Democrats in general... Hell, where is Obama speaking out about Chicago gun violence? After-all it's his hometown and home of the future Obama library (LOL Maybe). Where is Joe Biden who claims that 'America has Stormy Daniels (prostituted) the Second Amendment.' Where is Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer spewing their typical 'jump the shark' statements when it comes to Chicagoans having to sleep on the floor to avoid being shot through a window? They sure spout off every time some retarded POS white boy shoots up a school. Hell, now according to the latest liberal reporting those inbreed morons no longer even need to use an AR-15 to have the left hyperventilate about their so-called "Common sense gun control" i.e. Repealing the Second Amendment. The Santa Fe School shooting introduced America to two new liberal loony toon phrases "AR-15 Like" and the incredibly asinine USA today created phrase ‘less-lethal' than an AR-15. As long as the left can get AR-15 in their gun control story all's good in Liberal La-La-Land. But somehow the Democrats and MSM seem to never address the thousands of shootings taking place each year in dozens of generational run Democratic, gun controlled cities like Chicago, Detroit or Baltimore? Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation but year in and year out the Windy City's streets are basically a shooting gallery that have law-abiding citizens running for their lives. 22 in 2018 The Democrats latest love has been spewing their "22 school shootings in 2018." Yes, it's nothing but BS when you consider the fake news media and the Democrats who thought it up are counting a BB gun incident among those 22 school shootings. But while liberals are using months as their parameter, in Chicago they count their shooting in minutes. Operation: Hotel Update
Transmission_Initiated Transmission ID: 00008 TFNation_2017 Operation: Hotel Update
We are so grateful to all of our supporters for what has been an incredible 18 months! It has been heartening for us to see the ever-growing support of the entire TFNation family - attendees, traders, guests, volunteers and crew from all walks of TF fandom, coming together to share their passion.
One of the results of this union has been a markedly increased demand for this years’ convention-rate rooms at the Hilton Metropole. Due to this demand, the remaining allocation has become limited and, naturally, we have received a lot of questions regarding the remaining rooms. We therefore want to take this opportunity to answer some of these points, provide some information and keep everyone up to date. So let's begin with...
1. ARE ALL OF THE DISCOUNTED ROOMS SOLD OUT?
No. Although some room dates/types have sold out, there are some still free to book. At the time of posting, the following options are still available.
Wednesday 9th – Single Deluxe, Twin Deluxe, Queen Family
Thursday 10th - No rooms available at our discounted rate
Friday 11th –Single Deluxe, Queen Deluxe (extremely limited), Queen Executive Rooms
Saturday 12th – Single Deluxe
Sunday 13th - No rooms available at our discounted rate
Monday 14th – Twin Deluxe, Queen Family
Tuesday 15th – Twin Deluxe, Queen Family
2. WILL TFNATION RECEIVE ANY OTHER DISCOUNTED ROOMS?
We have already liaised with the hotel and it is very unlikely that we will be afforded any more rooms at the convention-rate, as they have to cater for multiple events within the Hilton complex, as well as demand from “Quiltcon” which expects over 25,000 visitors that weekend. With this in mind, we encourage you to make look into alternatives now, if you are unable to secure your first choice room.
3. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR ROOM CHOICES ARE UNAVAILABLE
There are multiple ways you can book alternative accommodation, so stay calm, and start planning your hotel options now. Remember, this is where you will sleep AFTER enjoying all the convention's events. While staying outside of the main hotel may add extra time when returning to your room, it will not impact the jokes in the bar, the workshops we will announce shortly, the panels, the guests or your friends who you will no doubt meet that weekend.
Below, we will list the options you can take now, to assist your search. We advise you to take prompt action as holding out for your preferred room to become available again may only further reduce your options.
4. BOOK WHAT YOU CAN
As noted above; there are some Hilton options left. If you can book one or two nights at the discount rate, you may have more flexibility, financially, to book other nights either at the Hilton or elsewhere.
5. FIND A ROOMMATE
We will shortly open a thread on our Facebook page for people looking for roommates. If there is a spare bed in your room, please consider assisting a fellow fan. We will be monitoring the group to ensure the process runs fair.
6. THE HILTON WEBSITE
Although the convention rate rooms are selling quickly, the Hilton, like most hotels, reserves a portion of rooms for public sale.
Please check out their site at http://bit.ly/1RMUtdF for standard room rates. If you already have some nights booked at the Hilton, booking a further night, directly, will allow you to remain at the venue for longer. After purchase, we advise you to phone the hotel and enquire if they can “stitch” the two bookings together. NOTE: this does not mean the Hilton can amend prices.
7. THIRD PARTY HILTON ROOM WEBSITES
Third party websites also sell some of the publicly available rooms at the Hilton. While some bookings will be cheaper than the Hilton's own website, payment dates and breakfast options may vary - always read the terms. We suggest you try the following:
Hotels.com
Trivago.com
laterooms.com
8. OTHER HOTELS
Shortly, will update our website to provide you with a FULL list of alternative accommodation in the area as there are several options within walking distance, or a short commute. To assist folks looking now, we suggest four of the most popular alternative hotels are worth checking out;
Hotel Ibis Styles Birmingham Airport NEC
Hotel Novotel Birmingham Airport
Hotel Ibis Budget Birmingham Airport
Hotel Ibis Birmingham Airport
All four options can be researched by going to their official group page at http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/united-kingdom/index.shtml
9. WHAT NOT TO DO
In previous years, a small number of people have called the Hilton directly and have been less than polite to reception staff. This serves little purpose but to damage TFNation's relationship with the Hilton and may, in fact, impact future years' allocations. We strongly urge our attendees not to do this - reception staff do not have the authority to give you additional discounted rooms, or change booked rates, and do not deserve to be treated badly during their day job.
In addition, we know our core team is quite visible and friendly, but messaging them directly to resolve your issues will only cause you extra delays. The TFNation crew will be looking at queries received through the main TFN Facebook page, Twitter, email, and prioritising them as they come in, to ensure attendees are treated fairly – thank you for your understanding here.
Finally, please do not attempt to book rooms at full rate, only to request a switch to the convention rate nearer the date. It does not work... especially when people write on our page about their intent to try it.
10. THE ALLOCATION PROCESS EXPLAINED
We have received a lot of questions along the lines of “why doesn’t the hotel give us all of the rooms – surely it is better for them to sell them all?”. We want to address this point, rather than try do dodge it.
Throughout the year, regular rooms at the Hilton can sell for anywhere between £100.00 and £300.00 per night, depending on how busy the NEC is that weekend. (Try a few searches on the website – you’ll see what we mean!) Now consider how cheap the TFNation rate is in comparison to this.
When putting the two figures side by side, it is quite easy to see that the Hilton sells our attendees rooms at a massive discount. And Transformers conventions at the Hilton have usually shared the weekend with at least two other events, which also receive discounted rates. All of a sudden, those numbers become super important. To keep their business viable that weekend, the Hilton therefore has to maintain a percentage of rooms to sell at the public rates – effectively, to pay for the loss they make in catering for a hoard of happy robot fans.
This is why, as much as we would love to, we can’t guarantee you all 790 rooms. Some go to a couple of other events; some go to special NEC affiliate events; and some go to the general public to help to pay for us lot. This is common practice at all hotel convention venues.
Some attendees may not be aware, but previous TF events at the Hilton (and the Holiday Inn, for you veterans) have sold out of their discounted rooms, with many attendees sourcing alternate accommodation. If you have not been in this position before, it is natural to be a little nervous. It is, however, important to remember that nothing has gone wrong - the truth is that a large amount of our TF community have booked straight away and taken up many of the options available. With the options listed above (and more to come) we hope we can make your convention booking process as easy as possible.
We hope this update has been helpful and we thank you for your understanding. We know booking hotel rooms can be a stressful time. Whether or not you get your first choice room, we hope as many of you as possible will join us at the convention.
Further transmissions to follow.

Richmond Day 3
Josh’s Perspective for the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar:
The Civil War Museum at Tredegar is a fantastic museum that shows the most violent conflict ever to take place on American soil. I had been to other Civil War sites before, such as Gettysburg and Appomattox, but this may have been my favorite. After we purchased tickets, I was amazed to see a collage wallpaper of my favorite Civil War heroes, such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. There are also blown-up newspaper clippings from the 1860s on the wall. The first artifacts that we saw were from John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry. As a white abolitionist, John Brown believed he had a moral and religious obligation to bring slavery down. He was joined by slaves in this revolt. Though he got executed in 1859, his last speech was wise because he knew of the violence to come. “I John Brown am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with Blood…”
The permanent exhibition that followed did not shy away from presenting the cause of the Civil War - slavery. As evidenced by the rhetoric of men like Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens (see the Cornerstone Speech), the Confederates were fighting to save their institutional form of slavery. The museum did not claim that the North was free from racism, but glorifying the Southern cause is something that the institution did not do. I enjoyed the chronological nature of the museum. It allowed me to understand events better than I ever had and gave insight into things that I had never heard of before. There was a short film about the bread riots that took place in Southern cities like Richmond, as well as the destruction that came in New York after a new draft policy was unveiled. During the New York City Draft Riots, protestors killed African-Americans and even set the “Colored Orphan Asylum” ablaze. In the last few display cases, we saw artifacts that belonged to Stonewall Jackson, who was notably shot by one of his men. The museum presented an honest narrative of how Jefferson Davis ran away from Richmond when the Union was closing in on the city. General William T. Sherman’s actions in taking the major city of Atlanta were also featured. Overall, I thought this museum was fantastic. It asked thought-provoking questions throughout and let visitors know that though progress was made when the Union was victorious, institutional hate and violence would be on the rise after the untimely death of President Abraham Lincoln.
The museum is relatively new since it opened in its current form in 2019. We talked to two of the staff members at the ticketing and gift shop desk, and they informed us that there have not been many protests from either side of the political spectrum. There is the occasional phone call from a Confederate sympathizer questioning the museum's content, but those are few and far between. The interesting placement of the museum, as well as the outbreak of COVID-19, has significantly limited the number of protests. I cannot voice enough praise for this museum. It is a trip that is worth taking for all Americans.
Tomi’s Perspective for the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar:
Right off the James River and canal walk, “in its own secluded place” as one of the associates said, is the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar. You can see that the museum is a combination of new and old structure as soon as you drive up. Tredegar was one of the Confederacy’s largest iron works until the end of the Civil War. The museum not only has incredible history inside, but on the outside as well since it was a major historic preservation project that used as much of the original brick from the 19th century iron works. The museum greets you with steel and wood beams, with decorative rocks all around the floor. Before you head into the main gallery of the museum there is a small piece to the exhibition for you to see. We think that it was to give an introduction to the new museum and the true stories the American Civil War Museum was going to tell, not the Lost Cause entrenched Museum of the Confederacy of the past. “PRESERVE THE UNION/PRESERVE SLAVERY”, “AMERICA TORN ASUNDER”, “A thorny debate over slavery threatened America’s democratic experiment.” Those are just a few quotes from the 1860 introduction. These quotes show that any visitor that may be hoping to find an exhibition about the Lost Cause may be in the wrong place. It also serves as a wonderful introduction to the timeline format the museum uses in their permanent exhibit.
Once you walk into the gallery, it is dim, but you can see and hear the exhibits you will see later. It is surely made to be a place for contemplation, but not pride for the Union or Confederacy. Going from 1861 to 1865 the museum is filled with artifacts from soldiers from both the Union and Confederacy, the enslaved people, women, children, and prisoners of war. It sung untold stories of African American nurses like Ann Bradford Stokes, who were pivotal in the health of Union soldiers. The museum had something for everyone to enjoy. Not all exhibits were the usual plaque and artifact, but they invited you to have interactions. Touchscreens for a timeline to dive deeper into the geographic locations for battles and people were at the beginning of each “year” you went through. They were easy to use for all ages. One of my favorite interactive exhibits was the magnifying glass component where you could literally get a closer look at Prisoner of War trinkets they created while they were imprisoned. Those trinkets were made out of bone, wood, and other odd materials they could find while jailed. The museum offers something that everyone can enjoy.
After going through the main exhibit, there were plaques and artifacts about the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, along with Reconstruction policies. As Josh explained, each controversial or heavy exhibit had a question at the end for you to ponder. My favorite question that was posed and really made me think, was after the 13th Amendment piece. With a figure dressed in a KKK robe ensemble and images of sharecropping surrounding it, the question “Did slavery really end?” was presented before us. The response from us both was emotional and allowed us to really dive deep into a painful time in American history.
Upstairs were two other galleries that had rotating exhibits and another exhibit that was in the works for visitors to comment on with Post-It’s. “Greenback America” is an interactive experience that shows the transformation of American currency during the Civil War that shaped our economy as we know it today. Next, there was “Southern Ambitions” that told the story of the “what if the Confederacy had won?” through the lenses of the big ideas they wanted to accomplish. From a new railroad to compete with the Union’s Transcontinental Railroad to making alliances with some of the world’s most powerful countries, the Confederacy had some big plans. This exhibit was also in Spanish, so it was accessible to even more visitors to enjoy.
Outside of the museum was my absolute favorite statue we had seen in Richmond. This past year, I took an immersive course about Abraham Lincoln that increased my interest in him and the Civil War. He and Tad, his son, are sitting on a bench in front of a wall that states “TO BIND UP THE NATION'S WOUNDS.” It is a powerful piece knowing the tragic and early ends both of the men had. Though Abraham Lincoln has some problematic pieces to his history, like his first ideas of colonization, he changed and became an advocate for all people of the United States. Just like any person in history, he was not perfect. To study him and see the challenges and changes he went through as a person to come to his beliefs for equality for all is one that all of us can find inspiration in.
Day 3 Continued:
After having a delicious lunch at Capitol Waffle Shop, we took a break from Civil War history to the Black History Museum of Richmond. Housed in the first armory for an African American militia, the reimagined space takes on history of the community that surrounds them and across the nation. Walking in, you are greeted by a statue of a Tuskegee Airman from the Petersburg area. The lovely staff gave us a great introduction to the museum and the four exhibitions they had on display. The first is very small and is within the lobby area. It is a recreated lunch counter of Woolworth’s where many sit-ins across the South took place. It is just a reminder of the grassroots efforts that created change alongside the larger protests and actions. The first floor is the permanent exhibit that takes you through the history of African Americans through the lenses of four pivotal events in American history: Emancipation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights Movement. It was an expansive exhibit with touchscreens and photos. As museum goers, the amount of technology the museum used was not our favorite, but the information they had was essential. The next exhibit was about African American Jazz Musicians in Virginia. This was more our speed with photos and plaques lining the walls for us to read. There was even an interactive trivia piece to keep you engaged the entire time. Finally, there were paintings upstairs paying tribute to street art in Richmond. The new museum is a wonderful addition to the museum landscape in the heart of Richmond, Virginia.
Surrounded by loud noises of construction and the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center sits a comparably modest building known as the White House of the Confederacy. Owned by the same organization that operates the Tredegar museum, this building was the executive residence of Jefferson and Varina Davis between 1861-1865. It became known as the White House of the Confederacy after the Lost Cause narrative became infectious to many things in the South. Interestingly enough, the building was used as a school in the City of Richmond system before being remodeled into a museum. During our tour through the mansion, we saw many artifacts that were period pieces and others that were original to the Davis home. Our tour guide did not seem to be afraid of being honest about Jefferson Davis. He was the leader of a breakaway state, so visitors need to know that. We can recommend this historic home to anyone that would like to see an authentic, interpretive house museum. Even though the Confederacy is gone, it is important to see a place in which the Lost Cause was ingrained for such a long time.

Rating the US Amendments
It has been 47 years since congress passed a constitutional amendment. The 27th was ratified only 26 years ago but congress passed with the Bill of Rights. I personally think we are long overdue for some constitutional amendments but seeing as US politics today is a lot like bear excrement that probably isn’t happening anytime soon. In the meantime here is my opinion and rating of the existing 27 amendments in descending order. The 27th Amendment. 9/10. This is probably the coolest amendment given its record setting ratification period of over 200 years. It is kind of a no brains idea and I think it is laughable that the 13 original state legislatures were like “nah I could be a senator some day I don’t want this shit holding me back.” The 26th Amendment. 4/10. I guess the voting age has got to be somewhere but it is only arbitrarily 18 because that was the arbitrary age that you got drafted at during Vietnam. Anyway I wish they had arbitrarily chosen 17 instead because at least 17 is prime. The 25th Amendment. 7/10. Took them too many words to get the point across if you ask me. A necessary amendment but I think we should look back at mid 1960s and the sudden wiliness to pull back the presidents power a little bit we can all agree that there was a lot more to do here. The 24th Amendment. 10/10. One of the best amendments. A nice compromise of today’s political landscape. Republicans hate taxes and Democrats hate it when you make it hard for poor people to vote. Absolutely the only standing amendment that would have a snowballs chance in hell at ratification in 2018.
The 23rd Amendment. 5/10. Wow we were really close to a solid amendment here then we went and blew it with 6 words “but in no event more than” yeah so we going to limit DC’s voting power because Tom from Wyoming isn’t over represented enough? Also if we don’t pass an amendment giving DC citizens actual representatives before I am 50 I’m starting a revolution for taxation without representation. The 22nd Amendment. 3/10. I think term limits are a good thing. I think that the 2 terms is 1 too many. I think there should be an election the year after the midterms to extend the presidency by 2 more years for a maximum of 6 years served. Some would say this creates a longer lame duck period but who cares as it is today the president is just running for office that year anyway. The 21st Amendment. 2/10. Should have decriminalized all drugs. The 20th Amendment. 3/10. First of all we know you mean eastern time but have some dignity and specify it. Secondly I take significant issue with how we are supposed to choose a president if something happens to our elects. Lastly, limiting the ratification period of an amendment is lame. The 19th Amendment. 10/10. If only they had stopped at the word State or added “or any other reason” to the end of the sentence I would give this an 11/10. The 18th Amendment. 2/10. Gets some credit for always being an easy question on the AP US history exam. Doesn’t matter anymore and also was trash to begin with. The 17th Amendment. 9/10. Wow, can you imagine what today’s lobbyist would do if we had not gotten this through before 1980? It actually terrifies me when I think about how most of our federal laws came before this. I understand at the time it was different but boy are we not in the same world we were in 1787 The 16th Amendment. 6/10. Income tax is one way of doing it. The 15th Amendment. 10/10. Okay welcome to the ones you actually know. This one is like the 19th, they came so close to writing a perfect law but they missed it.
The 14th Amendment. 6/10. Wow is the 14th amendment a mixed bag. I really wish they had thought this one through a little bit more especially since it has evolved to be the corner stone of a shit ton of constitutional debate and supreme court rulings. Let’s break this one down by Section. Section 1 4/10. Welcome to the infamous equal protection clause everybody. Woo-boy. This section really starts off quite wonderfully. I wish they had defined some of their terms. Liberty, due process of law, and equal protection are all too vague. Unfortunately, we have a bunch of idiots that interrupt this as “it is okay to stuff children in cages.” So, I don’t know, maybe a clarifying statement that makes it obvious that you can’t stuff children in cages. Section 2 7/10. Indigenous people should count. Section 3 4/10. Meh. Section 4 6/10. For some reason I feel like section 4 covers the necessary basis and we can let them be elected and scrap section 3. Maybe I’m too easy on the rebel scum. Section 5 5/10. Seems obvious. The 13th Amendment. 10/10. We should do a better job enforcing it. The 12th Amendment. 6/10. Fine but we all know the original way was more fun. The 11th Amendment. 3/10. Fun fact a few months ago the New Jersey Senate post ratified this amendment. It is still pending ratification in the general assembly. I think this amendment is bad because well I’m a federalist piece of trash that Jefferson would hate. The 10th Amendment. 5/10. It is really difficult to believe that every ounce of power in the pages and pages of federal laws and executive orders is granted to the federal government by the constitution. Everyone basically points at this amendment when it is convenient for their political leanings and ignores it when its not. I’d be okay with a return to enforcement but only if like a lot of really important things are added to the constitution first. The 9th Amendment. 10/10. A truly great amendment. Could use an update to modern language but all around wonderful. The 8th Amendment. 2/10. What is excessive? What is cruel and unusual? Why is execution still a thing? Hod did we end up with mass incarceration? The answer to all of this and more whenever our government figures out the 8th Amendment is greatly in need of a refresh.
The 7th Amendment. 7/10. Needs updating like pretty much all the bill of rights but overall one of the least outdated parts. I think it would be really funny if every-time somebody got a parking ticket over 20 dollars we insisted on a jury trial. Then we would just have a collective citizens agreement to jury nullify any parking tickets from street cleaning days in Pittsburgh. That would be great. The 6th Amendment. 9/10. I am sure there is likely something wrong with this amendment but I’m not smart enough to understand what that is. I like it although I don’t think we enforce it so... we should do that? The 5th Amendment. 3/10. Screw the military getting their own trials that is dog shit. You defend our freedoms you should be tried under the freedoms we enjoy. I also think they need to be explicit about who has the authority to quantify just compensation for private property taken for public use. The 4th Amendment. 7/10. It is good. Could be enforced better. Unreasonable should be defied. The 3rd Amendment. 8/10. I don’t think this could ever even come up today but I love it so much. The 2nd Amendment. 0/10. Why is the amendment so different than all the others? How do the comas in the original vs the ratified copy change the meaning? I really don’t see how this can be interrupted to be anything other than one of the following 3: I have absolute rights to arms including nuclear warheads. I have absolute rights to revolutionary era weapons including canons but no specific rights to anything invented after the ratification of this amendment. Or I have no specific rights at all to any weapons unless I am in a regulated militia. Very few people seem to be arguing any of these points making this the single worse amendment of the whole Constitution. The 1st Amendment. 10/10. Has really stood the test of time. This is a good one.
