scott for an au i am working on,, watcher’s nest cafe. if you’re interested (some details under the cut)

- has been working at the watcher’s nest (cafe) for the past four years

- was a fashion/textiles student. now works at the cafe full time

- co-workers with jimmy and pearl, was also co-workers with grian too, but he quit

- is part-siren, though he’s never used his voice to charm someone out of something since he was ten - there’s no need to use it when he can steal something just as easily without it ;)

- has an old pocket watch, something which many people have questioned him over, seeing as said watch is broken and stuck at a particular time. he keeps it in his pocket anyway

Last post for today but I’ve started watching Sherlock Holmes (1984, Granada Holmes) and I need to scream about it!!!

I am still in season 1 but so far it is an absolutely fantastic adaptation and ADORE how Jeremy Brett plays Holmes. The intensity. But also the warmth and the humor. He is captivating. I am having an existential crisis two to three times per episode; he is such a fucking great Holmes! (Also, I just have to add, the man is sexy as hell in the role. Hot damn.)

I need to watch more and I need to learn more about the Behind the Scenes and the actors and especially Jeremy Brett.

Meanwhile, I am still reading my way through the Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle and I friggin’ love Holmes and Watson together. They are truly special.

I am having so many THOUGHTS and I am so HAPPY.

it's nothing that Shane did alone, per se. but basically, Watcher hyped up this big announcement that they had (w a countdown even, which—hindsight?? oof) and it ended up being that they were leaving YouTube (a la Dropout, but without the money, the decades-long support from fans, the cultural status, the portfolio diversity, and a mega-rich owner to bail them out if things went bad) and starting their OWN streaming service/platform. it's like, $82CAD a year, and maybe $8.27CAD a month (or $60USD/year or $5.99/month). that's what they're asking their fans to pay. and in a global cost of living crisis where rent has easily surpassed income by a margin that fills me with existential dread just thinking about lmao

but post-backlash, they updated their pinned post on YouTube and said that they would release the first episode of each series on YouTube (AND keep their backlog of work up, for free—how generous), but the rest of the episodes, and any new shows moving forward, will be on their streaming service exclusively.

the gist of the move is for better "production quality" which is ridiculous. it's almost as if they have no idea what made them special in the first place. and, IMO, its just (wheeze). that's it. that's all they needed. i'd watch Ryan and Shane sit in a basement and bicker back and forth about cryptids or DB Cooper any day over this.

and i fully get supporting your favourite creators, but this move was just. not it :/ not when they don't have a fraction of the backlog to justify such an insanely high subscription price when people can barely afford to live.

Honestly I wouldn't be mad if Watcher decided to instead post 1 episode per season and various bonus content exclusively to a paid service like Patreon, and uncensored versions of their videos to Nebula. If they want more creative freedom (which they should have, btw) there are other ways to go about it than making a subscription service solely for your channel and making 95% of your new content exclusive to it. Other creators already follow a similar model of having good and interesting bonus content that draws people into paid services. GMM with Rhett and Link comes to mind, since they have the Mythical Society, where the main draws are Good Mythical Evening and the exclusive merch that you can get by being a member. This is a model that doesn't alienate your audience and can be incredibly profitable if you make it worth the cost and advertise it well.

I just want to thank everyone here in Tumblr for trending Watcher and introducing me into their channel. I love all these guys, I love watching Dish Granted, Ghost Files, Puppet History. I love the one offs. I'm too scared to watch Are You Scared but I love Too Many Spirits. I just love it.

I don't think I ever had such strong feelings of gratitude for a Youtube channel before but these guys have it. And all of Tumblr has it for making me realize that there is this awesome channel out there in the wild!
