ramble-y post incoming:
tldr: is the inukag to izanori pipeline real, and am i falling headfirst into it? yes, yes i am.
[This post does contain spoilers for Kanata Kara and Inuyasha.]
recently (and by that i mean two days ago) i decided i wanted to start a shojo manga that wasn't too long, something I could read in between lectures. i checked some of my saved manga on the website i use, and found one that i had saved purely because i'd been enthralled by the cover art, which looked like this:
Tumblr media
(i mean, look at them!!)
...that, and it was 14 volumes, so I thought i could finish it within a week or two, reading a few chapters every day.
i was wrong. i'm on volume ten and it's been a day and a half.
i haven't finished and I'm making this post (partly because i've been rambling about it in ballistic keysmash-consistent twitter posts) to say that Kanata Kara is good. very, very good. damn that one-star review on the site i'm using, because that shit has to be an accidental click. I love the world-building, the diverse cast of characters, and the art is magnificent. I think my favorite thing of all has to be the themes represented so far in the manga, perpetuated by our titular characters noriko and izark. I may make a future post about that when i finish the manga, but there is one thing i noticed while reading that struck me as really interesting: the dynamic between izark and noriko, and the characters themselves, remind me a lot of inuyasha and kagome.
now i'm gonna preface this by saying i'm not trying to say that these are the same dynamics or something, because they aren't - I just want to point out parallels i thought were really interesting, as someone who loves both relationships in their respective mangas. i also want to establish that Kanata Kara predates Inuyasha by three to five years*- so what I really should be saying is that inuyasha and kagome remind me of izark and noriko, but you get the picture. you could argue a number of things with this in mind, but i'm not here to discuss any of that. this isn't meant to be some sort of dumb gotcha; both series are good in their own ways, and some of the similarities i'm highlighting can be attributed to similar tropes being at play!
*(sources vary, some say 1993, others say 1995)
izark/inuyasha
Tumblr media Tumblr media
demons - inuyasha is half inu-youkai, whereas izark is the sky demon from a prophecy that makes up much of the manga's internal and external conflict for him. an interesting contrast i found was that while inuyasha's half-demon features are present for the majority of the manga and his human side shows up only a handful of times, it's the exact opposite for izark, whose "human" appearance reigns for the majority of the manga.
both characters were shunned by their respective communities (and humanity at large, though inuyasha had his mother for some time, and izark's mother tried to kill him). when both parents died, they began living on the fringes of society, never interacting with anyone and, according to them, "preferring to be alone."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
both share moments where their demon sides take over and they are unable to control themselves - unless, of course, their loved one is present to help them. otherwise, both are trapped in a violent, bloodthirsty state of mind that makes them lose parts of their identity each time transformation is undergone. both try to avoid this part of them out of fear of losing themselves, but when occasions rise where they are in those forms, their respective loved ones pull them out of it/help them ground themselves.
powerful fighters willing to quite literally put everything on the line for their respective loved ones - i'm talking half-dead-dragging their-bodies-across-the floor and thinking "well, at least she's okay."
one interesting difference to me is how izark and inuyasha approach their humanity. izark is constantly shown in his "human" form and is only in his demon form a handful of times, and the exact opposite is true for inuyasha. izark's earlier (brief) plan of doing away with noriko is spurned from his desire to avoid the tragic fate tied with his demonic form, whereas inuyasha's earlier actions are motivated by his desire to become a full demon. izark relates his demon side to inevitability, to the idea that he might just become the monster everyone prophesied him to be; inuyasha (in the beginning) views his humanity with scorn and associates it with weakness. he wants to embrace the possibility of achieving full demon status, and why? is it just because he wants power? in my opinion, no - I think it's a way of finding a place; being free to go where he wants. inuyasha is already powerful in his own right, and even when he's given the opportunity to claim a formidable weapon like his father's sword, he says he has no interest in it (until, of course, kagome mentions he could try to claim it just to spite sesshomaru, and only then is his interest peaked.) inuyasha seeks freedom by assimilating into a full demon identity, izark seeks freedom from that full demon identity, and only then will he feel in control of his life.
kagome/noriko
Tumblr media Tumblr media
both from modern era japan and get isekaied into another world - kagome's instance is time-travel, though - noriko is transported to a whole other world with different culture, geography, and language (noriko having to learn the language of the people there and taking part in their customs is one of my favorite things about the manga!!)
the beacon of light in their respective groups/found family, bringing everyone together
key players in a "Prophecy of Doom" - kagome's "destiny" is to continue the cycle of the shikon jewel; noriko's "destiny" is to awaken the Sky Demon (izark). both girls, and their loved ones, change their futures.
damsels? maybe, but never in distress:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and, of course, the most prominent parallel for me: their acceptance of their lovers and the ripple effect that love has on their lovers' relationships and life:
"i'm not leaving you no matter what happens, no matter who you are - I will stay by your side":
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"you changed my life for the better":
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"i've opened up and become more vulnerable":
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are a ton of other examples i could use for this bullet, since it has a pretty broad spectrum of events that could fall under it, but these are my favorites.
i also want to draw attention to the way noriko deals with feeling powerless - both she and kagome are surrounded by powerful, experienced individuals, but unlike noriko, kagome has a reign on her archery and spiritual skills pretty early on in the manga, so she contributes in battles one way or another. one of noriko's longest internal conflicts is that she feels guilty that she can't do anything to help and that people are getting hurt on her behalf:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i absolutely love the advice given to her, and how it ties into the themes of the manga. noriko feels like she isn't helping, but even a simple thank you helps - even if it's just thanking one person for a single deed, everyone is intricately tied, and that goodwill spreads. it grows. it becomes a part of everyone. you don't have to be a fighter to spread good.
conclusion: the parallels are neat and READ KANATA KARA!

I Have More to Say About Kacchako That I Need to Let Out:
In one of the MHA Smash volumes they have some panels that take place around the time Bakugo was kidnapped by the League of Villains. The LoV force Bakugo to play the board game, Life to show them his deepest, dark desires. Turns out his “inner desires” were to have the most normal, domestic life. Something that amusingly contrasts his number 1 hero dream.
You can find the panels here. https://todomitoukei.tumblr.com/post/190826151761/horikoshi-not-having-put-this-in-the-main
Even though it’s parody and shouldn’t be taken for anything canonical, this is fanfiction and I can do whatever I want. Anyway, thanks to this panel it really helps give me a road map to what I want to do for the ages of the Kacchako kids. I specifically made Ryosei and Hanahoshi twins since their names are both star themed and binary stars are a thing.
Kacchako Timeline:
Age 24 to 25:
Katsuki and Ochako are dating and eventually move in together to help financially support each other. Katsuki needs all the help he can get after *MHA Epilogue Spoilers*.
Age 28:
They will get married on July 7th. (Basing it on the fact that Ochako loves looking at the night sky and July 7th is the date for Tanabata, the Star Festival. It’s also Present Mic’s birthday and Ochako is his favorite student, so that’s a bonus.)
Have a kid April 8th the year after (conceived on July 15th because it’s funny and came into the world 5 days early).
Age 35:
They are finally financially stable enough to own a house.
Conceived fraternal twins December 27th.
Age 36:
Twins born 8 days late on October 10th.
Anyway, that's my headcanon, Kacchako timeline so far based on the panel scenes I mentioned. Hopefully, I'll be able to update the timeline more accurately to the canon material once the extra 60 pages come out in the final, canon volume. Though, I'm not holding my breath on it because the extra pages could just as likely kill any ideas I had Kacchako related in the first place. Oh well, I knew what I was getting into when I let the Kacchako crumbs consume me. Now that I figured the age range between these kids, I can now go deeper into their personalities. I’m just really attached to these fan kids and wanted to do more for their bios then just experiment with quirks.
Zuyoboru (手伸)–
Name Meaning: “Hand extending”
Age: 14
Birthday: April 8th
Pronouns: He/Him
Personality: Zuyoboru, on first impression comes off as very affable and easygoing. Deep down, he fears that none of the connections he makes are genuine and feels lonely at times. He often questions if he’s really a good person or if he’s only nice to make it easier to deal with his quirk. With how his quirk works, he sometimes tries too hard to get people to like him. That way, he only needs to rely on his own blood to help track others if they need to be found. He often has the vibe of a space cadet even in intense situations. However, when it really matters, he puts on a serious, no-nonsense persona that is determined to get a job done asap.
Ryochi (凌地)–
Name Meaning: “Surpassing the earth”
Age: 6
Birthday: October 10th
Pronouns: He/Him
Personality: If Ryochi could be described with one word it would be exhausting. He’s got the competitive nature of Katsuki but he is a lot more reckless than Katsuki ever was. Given his quirk is tied to natural disasters, it is only natural for him to forgo strategy and embrace the chaos. He can be boastful at times, such as pointing out he’s so fast he won the race of existence against his sister when they were born, much to her annoyance. He honestly doesn’t even care about being a hero, he doesn’t need labels like “hero” to do the right thing. He just loves the thrill of fighting and adventure. (think like the lyrics “It Doesn’t Matter” from the first Sonic Adventure game)
He tries to not let others pointing out how villainous/dangerous his quirk is get to him. He knows his heart and he couldn’t care less about another’s analysis of his character. Actions speak louder than words after all.
Ayase (花星)–
Name Meaning: “Blossoming star” (just a poetic way to say supernova)
Age: 6
Birthday: October 10th
Pronouns: She/Her
Personality: Unlike her twin brother, Ayase actually tries to think of plans before springing into action. However, she can be a bit ditzy at times. She tends to stay in her head too long that the plethora of ideas she could do overwhelm her and Ryochi is already doing something before she figures out what to do. It’s as if her ideas were like the night sky and the perfect one is in the constellations. Unfortunately, she was always bad at finding the constellations in the millions of stars. As much potential her quirk has in fighting, her favorite way to use is to simply make people happy with the beauty of them. Since tiny stars don’t hurt people on impact, she likes seeing the happy faces of see her lights burst around them and making them feel special cause every deserves to feel special. In a way, she’s more of an artist than a hero. Even so, she chooses to be a hero because she wants to be a light in darkness for as many people as she can like her mother was and is. Just don’t make her mad though because play with fire and you will get burned. Things get under her skin quicker compared to Zuyoboru or even Ryochi, much to her dismay. Though since she hates expressing that anger, she does her best to hold it in because the last thing she wants is to be seen as the angry sibling. Though, she can only hold that pressure in for so long until she bursts like a supernova, usually on Ryochi, who deserves it most of the time. I suppose this is a spinoff sequel to this post.

Do you think that there seems to be a disconnect between charachters introduced before and after the soul eater anime ended? Like everyone loves Giriko, but does anybody care about Gopher, or the moon clowns? Or even thee death scythes that were shoved in at the end?
(Spoilers for Soul Eater and Fire Force. Content warnings for mentions of rape and grooming.)
Me. I care about those characters!
…Sort of.
Maybe.
...I care about those characters about as much as I do about any other characters.
Except the Moon Whaler hunters. I appreciate what someone else (Soul Eater Post?) wrote about how that arc is to parallel the hunt for Crona and whether Maka has it in her to potentially have to kill them. But it is such a needless side adventure and so late in the story to start exploring just how different this world is than our own--and a side adventure that leaves a bad taste in my mouth not only given the controversies around whale hunting but also because it is one of the few things explained in Fire Force and once again makes the world building less interesting.
And maybe I’m not that interested in Gen, or, rather, the version of Gen in the manga. Having a tech expert in the cast should be entertaining--but it's a little late to start doing the worldbuilding now about the tech in this world. It comes across like it is obligatory: the anime already had Buttataki in the same role, I guess the manga now needs its version, too.
And we include Gen just for a weird “H-beam is like 'ecchi'” pun is dull. The better option would have been for the H-beam to be his weapon partner (and a friend and I have already worked on such a character)--more unconventional weapons would have been a more entertaining bit of worldbuilding. But if the manga could not bother to lend more personality to the final Death Scythes we meet in the manga, what hope would this H-beam ever have?
The first anime concluded on March 30, 2009. I don’t know which chapter came out right before that final episode, but by March 21, 2009, Volume 14 was published, collecting Chapters 53 to 57. I’m guessing by this point manga characters introduced before the anime ended and who didn’t appear in the first anime included Tezca and Enrique--who are probably the last characters ever in the manga who had any meaningful impact on the story, Tezca more so, not only because of his interactions with Justin in the manga but also because he has such a broad, loud, memorable personality and design. Compared to Gopher (who I will defend in a moment), the Moon Clowns (who I can’t really defend--more on that in a moment), and the remaining Death Scythes and their meisters (more on them in a moment), Tezca is just heads and shoulders above them (until Justin cut off his head). Maybe this is why Tezca was the only one to leave an impression in Soul Eater NOT, whether showing up to scare the main trio in the manga, or as a keychain in the anime.
(There is also Noah in Volume 14, but we already saw his design in the Monotone Princess video game as Grimoire, so that is a technicality.)
The problem I’m having is that I didn’t get into Soul Eater until the manga was in its final chapters and only when the anime started airing on Toonami, so as a late participant in the fandom, there wasn’t much of a reason for me to feel disconnected from characters introduced after the anime ended. I pretty much treated anyone who was in the main manga and NOT as a Soul Eater character, all with the potential to lead their own story. It's just that some characters are easier to write for than others, not for any reason except that some are given more personality to work from than others.
As time goes on, I do prefer the anime more and more over the manga, so perhaps I have a bias towards characters who were in the anime but not in the manga--because I think, had the Studio BONES first anime had more time, more episodes, and diverged more wildly from the manga, we could have had those late additions to the manga get adapted in better or at least in surprising and expected ways that could have improved upon what didn’t work in the manga and could work better in adaptation. Imagine if we had Tezca as an actual character in the first anime: I think he could have been a second Excalibur, for good or bad. Imagine if the story was re-worked to give Pushkin some bigger relevance in the anime. What kind of fight could you stage if the Clowns had a larger role in the story, not as Asura's lackeys but as the actual leaders of some new threat for the next season?
This includes the later Death Scythes and their meisters, who have little to no personality and could have benefited from inclusion in the anime, just to make them into more fully realized characters. That’s an excellent opportunity for headcanon and fanfiction, but when the original manga doesn’t give you enough to work with, it also means that the portrayals of those new characters can go in infinite directions such that it is difficult to get to core details of those characters that are consistent across all iterations in fanworks.
In other words, we have numerous versions of Batman but which mostly have the same core details and principles (Adam West Batman is not Michael Keaton Batman is not Kevin Conroy Batman is not Diedrich Bader Batman--but they have more in common than different), whereas there is so little in the manga to understand Alexandre, Zubaidah, and others to make them feel like realized characters who can thrive in fan works.
And it is such a galling disappointment, not only because they are characters who add diversity and inclusion to the story, but because the manga and the anime had its chance to expand on those characters in Soul Eater NOT--and just didn’t. Djinn and Dinga appear in the NOT manga--only so they can stare down Shaula and not do anything while Tsugumi and the others take down the witch. They don’t even appear in the NOT anime. None of them got cameos at the end of Fire Force because Ohkubo was so desperate for attention that he substituted good storytelling with fanservice by way of “Soul Eater Babies” instead of making any meaningful connection between the world Shinra created and how we got to these adult characters who didn’t get much spotlight otherwise in the fandom. (Granted, I also can go on my rant again that Fire Force and Soul Eater being in the same timeline already doesn't make sense because Spirit Albarn shows up both in Fire Force's Japan and then 800+ years later in Soul Eater's Death City...It's almost as if the timeline fails on its own...)
As for Gopher: he has potential, and it was under-utilized. Not everything is going to be as memorable and impactful (albeit obviously problematic and unfortunately also badly done in other areas) like Chainsaw Man when it comes to imagery that seems evocative of grooming and cycles of abuse and rebirth. But Gopher did seem one-note, hence why his ending was also one-note, where he gets to leave with additional flavors of Noah…that opens up more questions than I want to address right now about how this basically reverses the power dynamic in which it is now Gopher possessing Noah for his own satisfaction rather than Noah using Gopher either as his lackey or his punching bag.
The Moon Clowns? Memorable designs, just cannon fodder for fights. They are the equivalent of film-only characters like the villains in a My Hero Academia movie. Their designs are already outclassed by Compress in My Hero Academia. Kaguya has potential but seems more like a prototype for Tamaki in Fire Force in a different direction. Not to encourage fanservice-bait, but less you’re going to use Kaguya in a surprising way in terms of personality or commentary on sexual puritanism or bodily autonomy or just acknowledging that some people are flirts, the most I could imagine is having her face off against Blair--which would just be a repeat of Blair’s fights against Mizune and the Succubus.
Finally, about Giriko: …Eh, I don’t love his last arc.
Giriko’s final arc becomes an extended attempt to rape Maka, thereby prompting Soul to intervene to save her, inspired in part by the shoe-horned but not unwelcomed story beat of Maka’s self-doubts that have been with her since the first time she encountered the Clown but which does seem awkwardly forced into the story by introducing the “love letters” / meister invitations to Soul. It is not as if Maka’s arc was not always there, and it’s not as if waiting until this arc to finally address it is bad--but the seams of the narrative stitching are showing. And it all depends on the Mark Millar school of “you know the villain is bad because he wants to rape someone,” which is cliche and, worse than that, a gross failure to actually talk seriously about rape, living after rape, the fact that a rapist is just as likely someone who isn’t a mustache-twirling villain or a Giriko-level obviously bad guy but a toxic "nice guy."
There is almost something there with Giriko having nothing left to live for after Arachne is dead and confirmed gone forever. But there’s no moment of something haunting there. He is fighting against Soul; Soul has Arachne’s witch soul in him now. Unless I’m forgetting something, it’s not as if we get a scene of Giriko promising he will slice Soul in half and pull Arachne’s soul out of him. That would never bring Arachne back--but it would be symbolic and a quick shorthand to the audience about what Giriko is actually getting at, and it would be a hell of a lot more interesting than, “Giriko wants to get off on sex and power fantasies by raping Maka.” It would remind us that Arachne was a part of all of this. You could even have an excuse to give Giriko a scene, however unearned it is, of him dying and imagining a reunion with Arachne, to show how this toxic loyalty contributed to the bloodlust that ended his life.

I read up to volume 14 of Shimizu Reiko's Kaguya Hime, so I'm now halfway through the story.
Some opinions under the cut, about the plot and f/f status of the story (spoilers)
The series has taken a turn towards a lot of the recurring male characters being into Akira to mirror the tale of Kaguya Hime and her various suitors. For some of them, it's quite sudden and theorized by a few characters as them still being used as sacrifices to the moon people and potentially part of a bigger plan.
The scale of the story is now pretty ambitious and it can feel a little bit over the place with the switching to different places and characters.
When it comes to f/f, the content is either older women being into Akira and trying to get their hands on her, while she's very much not into it, and girls around Akira's age who are enamoured with her and who she likes in ambiguous ways.
Mayu's love for Akira is painted as kinda removed from sexual one at points: she talks about her wish for them to stay together forever as virgins and it feels like she has a bit of issues around sex and "purity". She seems to want a platonic or asexual relationship in part because of being disgusted by what her mother did but then she also has some pretty kinky thoughts at times... Like wishing for a BDSM-styled lady to whip her instead of a random dude, when she's threatened with corporal punishment in one scene.
Outside of that, Gyokurei was killed and with her, the only f/f content not involving Akira has died down. There aren't many significant interactions of female characters outside of those with our protagonist. Maggie, one of the earlier recurring female characters, has been missing for a while after somehow losing off-screen a gas mask she had to protect herself from poison and being sent to a military hospital. Some recent plot points seem to hint that she's probably not alive anymore.
So it's not exactly super heavy on that front. Honestly at that point, it really feel like there's no way for much more to happen and Akira has been very much centered on Yui (main male character) as her love interest, which feels like it's probably not gonna change, although who knows given some of the twists in this story.
I'm still intrigued by the general plot and since I love the artstyle, the illustrations and little f/f scenes we get, however small they are, I'll try to read to the end.
But depending on how much the "every dude is in love with Akira" takes front focus and how some characters are treated (like Mayu being relegated entirely to annoying comic relief or Satton sometimes seeming like he's being flanderized into an Angry Black Man stereotype), I might also drop it.

@farminglesbian tagged me to list 9 books I plan to read this year. However, I'll extend the list and include comics, graphic novels, and manga, because I love reading those, too.
Thanks for tagging me!
Generally speaking, I do not plan ahead what I'm going to read over the course of a year. Most of my drive to read something originates from an obsession or a certain curiosity, something I watched or read about, or when I browse the shelves of a book store.
That is why my list of books I read so far is pretty much all over the place.
1. "Kingdom Come" - Alex Ross
I really want to look at Wonder Woman in that glorious golden armor.
2. "The Power of The Dog" - Thomas Savage
Highly enjoyed the movie, so it's a no brainer for me.
3. Another Moomin book by Tove Jansson. I've read the first 3 and watched the new aninmated series Dec-Jan, which I enjoyed a lot.
4. Maybe another one by Virginia Woolf? Last year I read "Orlando". But I really have to be in the mood since the language is quite complex. No reading in bed for me when it comes to her work. I fall asleep too easily hah. Her diaries and letters are easier to read every now and then.
5. Another novel by Michael Crichton. Loved "Jurassic Park", and "Dragon Teeth" was awesome. Plus the new Jurassic World movie will be released this summer, so there's a high chance my dinosaur obsession will resurface.
6. I'll probably re-read all "The Way of The House Husband" volumes as soon as the new volume is released. It's one of the few Manga series that make me laugh out loud.
7. If I'm in the mood this year, I'll re-read "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. The one novel that got me into reading (almost) exclusively in English back in 2004-2005.
8. Maybe I'll manage to finish "Dune" by Frank Herbert, or at least the first half which the Villeneuve adaptation covers.
9. "The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski
I put it aside, although it's a great read. Love the writing style.
I'll tag the following and anyone who feels like it (no obligations):

Manga Update: Kiss Him, Not Me!
Volumes: 14 (Anime: 12 episodes -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, AS WELL!!!) Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars Favorite Characters: Kae Serinuma, Mutsumi-senpai, & Nishina Favorite Pairings: Kae Serinuma x Asuna Mutsumi-senpai Pros: Hilarious, heartwarming, charming, absurd, and just bloody entertaining AF Cons: Okay, so..... the weight loss subplot is problematic (mainly with the casual fatphobic rhetoric), but.... speaking as someone who had her own fair share of body image issues, I found this series' take oddly refreshing (more thoughts below) Recommended for: FANS OF THE ANIME SERIES. And any current or former BL fangirls, otaku, nerds, etc. Y'all will relate to the madness within, methinks lol
~~~
I cannot believe it took me six years after falling in love with the anime to FINALLY finish the manga, when I literally devoured volumes 3-14 (the end) in just a few days. Only a handful of manga titles make me laugh out loud, and Kiss Him, Not Me! is firmly in that category. The anime references, fandom/shipping lore and madness, and overall shenanigans are just a joy to consume.
And though I adore this series with every fiber of my being, and I say both the anime and manga are more-or-less on equal footing (with the anime being only slightly objectively "lesser" because the manga has more story, but I digress), I will say I do "prefer" the anime, but ONLY because the dubbed cast did such a fantastic job hamming up every single line of dialogue. But I definitely want to own BOTH the manga AND anime one day!! It's just so much fun and sweet and adorable and hilarious!! What's not to love?!
That aside.... let's address the elephant in the room.
So. Let's talk about the Weight Loss thing. Semi-spoilers ahead (TW: weight loss and gain, unrealistic eating habits, fatphobic reactions, etc)
The anime also covers the basics, but here's the breakdown:
Kae Serinuma is an overweight otaku who has her bestie to fangirl with, but is also mostly satisfied with remaining perpetually single, as long as she can indulge in her BL fantasies in fiction and reality.
one day, her favorite anime series kills off her favorite character, sinking her into a week-long starvation depression period
when she finally emerges, she is skinny, glowing with gorgeous skin, and Hot AF
(yes that is VERY problematic, but stay with me)
she returns to school, everyone is Shook, and immediately gains a harem of boys seeking her affection
standard harem shenanigans ensue, but with a lot more Self Awareness, which makes it even funnier
then Kae enters a chocolate character contest, eats up the leftover pieces over the weekend, and..... gains weight again
(yes, that means she literally fluctuates between Thin Perfection and Comical Fatness at the drop of the hat. Yes, that is problematic, MOVING ON)
half of her harem is horrified and demands she lose the weight (gross); the other half accepts her and is fine either way, and one member actually gains Character Development and moves up from shallow fuckboi to caring love interest (no, he's not the chosen one)
Kae is encouraged to lose weight and WANTS to, of her own volition, and doesn't seem to mind either way (important)
and so Kae loses weight again, this time a bit more realistically (albeit cliched) with exercise, and a good dosage of humor because it is fake BL shenanigans that motivate her lol
Okay. So here's the thing.
Yes, the way weight loss is literally addressed and resolved/relapsed is unbelievably unrealistic, problematic, and fatphobic AF. But that's only if we don't account for Kae herself.
Because the crux of it all is...... Kae literally does not give a shit.
She's happy in any body shape.
She never feels shame for being fat, and when others shame her, she dismisses it. If anything, she ironically feels more uncomfortable when she's thin because of the unwanted Pretty Privilege attention she constantly receives.
Two of her love interests, including (spoiler) the guy she ends up choosing and marrying, literally love her both before and after the weight loss/gain, and don't see a problem with her body, other than a vague "you probably shouldn't lose/gain weight so quickly and drastically," but still support her decisions.
The weight thing is not to be taken too seriously, even while it's still important to unpack. She's not LITERALLY gaining/losing that much weight super quickly (the series even makes jokes about how that's even possible), but she is fluctuating between what is deemed by Society as what is Attractive vs Not. Maybe in a real world setting she switches between make-up vs no make-up depending on her mood. Maybe she does gain weight, but it's actually minimal, because society is extremely fatphobic and considers anything a smidgen higher than The Perfect Thinness as Fat Slob or some sort of nonsense. Or maybe it's something entirely different, some of innocuous societal norm of Attractiveness that Kae doesn't maintain, for whatever reason.
Except....... that's also not the case? Because Kae IS abnormal, a deviant with her interests, hobbies, and fangirlish obsessions. And the best part? WEIGHT DOES NOT PLAY A FACTOR INTO IT.
Whether she's fat or skinny, she is a shameless, passionate, loud, and insane fangirl, who literally drools over hot guys and literally has "ugly" thirsty facial expressions even when she's supposed to be "hot." And that is SO GOOD.
Too often in Problematic Media that features weight loss, there's a feeling of shame vs confidence, nerdiness vs normality. And though people AROUND Kae certainly react with all kinds of fatphobia, SHE HERSELF DOES NOT AND THAT IS KEY. Her weight does not determine her worth nor her love for otakuness. He weight only ever influenced her surroundings, and before long, the shallow pettiness is set aside and her harem grows to care for her PERSON, not just her Sparkling Perfect Skinny Bod.
I completely understand why some people cannot get past the blatant fatphobic reactions of Kae's peers, but for me, Kae herself is what makes it palpable. And her friends/love interests who don't care either.
(And another important note/spoiler: her future husband literally happily marries her when she's overweight and, back when she first regained her weight at school, literally tells his fellow harem members that Kae is beautiful either way. SO LIKE. I THINK THE SERIES IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO MAKE SOME LEGIT COMMENTARY AND NOT JUST BE FATPHOBIC FOR THE LULZ, Y'ALL.)
[ VOLUME 6: Ch 25 - 28 ]
With Kiro’s help, MC returns to the original world, waking up at Twin Leaves Orphanage
The four love interests retain fragments of their memories from the Winter World. Shaw retains all of his memories
In the half year that MC wasn’t around, a name list of the Evolvers in the original world was disclosed by the STF
The STF takes away all the Evolver children from Twin Leaves Orphanage, claiming that they have to manage Evolvers who are minors
MC tries to use her Evol, but realises that she has lost it
Cyril appears in this world. He has also lost his Evol and is now an ordinary person
STF’s Commander Leto publicly announces the existence of BS, and calls for the arrest of Hades, who had created the flu. At the same time, he expresses that STF already knows the identities of the core members in BS
Lucien manages to produce a vaccine for the flu, resolving the Flu Incident
Lucien sets up the Ultima Bioresearch Centre
Over the past half year, Lucien has been experiencing hallucinations of MC because of how much he missed her. He even decorated his house to look like MC’s
Tumblr media
Following the address given to her by Shaw, MC heads to an abandoned warehouse to investigate. She meets Litton and learns that Gavin is currently in a facility meant for evolution, and is part of the first batch of subjects to undergo experiments
To rescue Gavin, MC takes on a fake identity with the assistance of Litton, pretending to be a male and successfully entering the facility
MC and Gavin discover that nobody has survived the pre-experiments, suggesting that Evolvers are unable to withstand the final evolution
Gavin and Litton coordinate, causing an explosion and a power cut in the facility. Gavin and MC seize this opportunity to escape and head to the evolution accelerator. When they reach the base, they realise the accelerator has already been taken away
Tumblr media
MC finds a design for an intricate machine part which resembles the black box
Black Queen and Leto are working together
In the Observation Centre, MC hears about a mysterious organisation called “No Man’s Island” which helps Evolvers with nowhere else to turn to
Through a flyer, MC finds the location of “No Man’s Island”. She boards a cargo ship, and discovers that the Boss behind the organisation is Victor
Leto has grown suspicious of Victor’s cargo ship, and often conducts surprise investigations. Fortunately, the Evolvers on the cargo ship leave in time and evade the STF
Tumblr media
MC receives Kiro’s text and heads to the amusement park as arranged
On the outside, it appears that the amusement park was blown up by BS. In reality, Leto hid explosives underground
Tumblr media
The STF publicly declares that Hades has been dealt with, and Eli volunteers to enter the evolution accelerator
Through intercepting a live broadcast, Helios announces that he will be formally challenging the STF
Tumblr media
-
[ VOLUME 7: Ch 29 - 32 ]
“Kiro” suddenly announces that he will be returning from retirement with a concert
MC rushes to BS to look for Kiro. Since Helios is there, it is revealed that “Kiro” is simply Anole disguising himself using Evol. The concert was also organised by Anole
Tumblr media
MC learns from Helios that the evolution accelerator had already existed 17 years ago. However, it’s unable to operate without the QUEEN gene. Because MC’s Evol has been obtained, the accelerator is able to function
Anole flees in defeat, and Kiro performs on stage
A kidnapper from Trio-Stars pretends to be a writer from “Entertainment Weekly”, drawing MC away from the concert venue. MC is knocked unconscious and brought away by the kidnappers
From the conversation between the kidnappers, MC discovers that she was mistaken to be a chemist of devo serum (i.e. Black Queen)
Shaw appears and saves MC
As a condition to participate in this matter, MC has to assist Shaw in completing a mysterious transaction in Agio Street. The buyer is willing to pay handsomely for the devo serum and the chemist who formulated it, and the seller is a local gang that had been established in Agio Street for many years - Trio-Stars
Shaw disguises himself as an informant from the Trio-Stars, and MC disguises herself as a drug manufacturer
In a bar in Agio Street, MC bumps into members from the Trio-Stars who are looking for MC. Shaw joins in the scuffle, and the two of them flee
MC ends up at a fortune teller’s, and finds the medium very familiar
The medium is actually Black Queen, and Cyril is there too
To continue the investigation, MC pretends to be an informant for the Trio-Stars and heads to the location for the mysterious transaction. She meets the “buyer” - Victor
The boss of Trio-Stars exposes MC’s disguise. Fortunately, MC and Victor work together and manage to escape
MC learns from Victor that the devo serum might be related to her loss of Evol
In the Ultima Bioresearch Centre, Lucien’s research on the devo serum shows that it is unrelated to MC’s genes. While her genes have a stabilising effect, it doesn’t have the ability to cause Evol devolution
Tumblr media
Kidnapping Incident at Twin Leaves Orphanage (Dr Song). Lucien and MC rush to the scene
The head of the orphanage steps out to explain that the missing kids were actually playing hide-and-seek, and they weren’t kidnapped. Dr Song, who has lost her Evol, is taken away by the STF
From the kids, MC learns that “MC” (i.e. Black Queen) had invited the kids to a game of hide-and-seek
MC and Lucien meet Artemis at the bridge, and she forces MC to hand over what Dr Song gave to her. Lucien uses space folding to send MC away
Tumblr media
Along the way home, MC bumps into Gavin, who is investigating a murder in Agio Street. The victim is an Evolver, but the autopsy report showed that the victim no longer had Evol
MC and Gavin discover that the victim used to be an equipment caretaker in Loveland High, and they head over to investigate
In Loveland High, there’s a sudden earthquake. MC is responsible for evacuating people who are still in in the building, and meets Eli who is leading the Special Operations Team in a mission to apprehend an Evol criminal. In fact, Eli’s true motive is to find Gavin (and to retrieve the experiment report for the accelerator)
Gavin and Eli engage in a fight. In the end, Eli leaves a weakened Gavin trapped in a classroom. The building collapses, and Gavin manages to push MC outside the building
While searching for Gavin, a second collapse occurs. MC enters a time subway created by Cyril
Gavin manages to escape from the building
Tumblr media
Based on MC’s consciousness, Cyril created his final work - the time subway
MC boards the time subway and sees the experiences she shared with the four male leads as the subway travels forward. She also “meets” the four male leads during their younger days
MC starts running in the opposite direction of the subway in order to break free from this cycle. The time subway becomes a gift from MC to Cyril - he has always craved for a perfect world
After leaving the time subway, MC awakes in the hospital and is told that she had fainted along the street. Cyril bids her farewell
At the convenience store, MC meets a youngster who escaped from the Observation Centre. The other escapees are attempting to search for a place which can give them the devo serum. MC claims to be an Evolver who escaped from the Observation Centre, causing the escapees to accept her into the group. She boards a truck with them
MC gets a premonition of the youngster’s future, and realises that her Evol has returned
While on the bridge, the truck meets with an accident. In order to stop another sedan from tumbling into the ocean, a middle-aged man in the truck uses his Evol, revealing his identity as an Evolver
Because of the Evol energy waves, STF captures the escapees, resulting in a brawl between the two sides
One of the Evolvers loses control of his Evol, and accidentally sends a bullet and car flying towards MC
Victor appears and stops time, rescuing MC. However, he collapses because he interfered with the laws of nature
Tumblr media
MC reveals the truth of how Evolvers in the Observation Centre were being used as experimental subjects for the evolution accelerator
Gavin leads the NW squad to investigate, and announces that he will take responsibility for everything that happened in the Observation Centre
After locating the evolution accelerator, he sends the coordinates to Helios, who heads over to destroy it
Tumblr media
The four male leads meet
Tumblr media
-
[ VOLUME 8: Ch 33 - 34 ]
Miracle Finder discloses the truth about STF
Leto invites Evolvers to a party, including MC and the four male leads
MC attends the party with the four leads (split routes), and discovers that the invitees are all influential people in society
At the party, Leto uses a sound wave manipulator to influence the brain waves of Evolvers using music. By controlling these influential people, there will be less objections to Leto’s plans
MC and the four male leads successfully resolve this incident in their split routes. Unfortunately, Leto escapes
Leto’s misdeeds are exposed
Gavin becomes the new Commander of STF
Tumblr media
MC receives a text from Shaw, who tells her to bring her father’s notebook to Twin Leaves Orphanage
MC learns from Lucien that the replication Evol he lost was stolen by Leto
Through Shaw, MC learns that Leto used the replication Evol to kidnap the kids in Twin Leaves Orphanage, and also installed explosives in order to threaten the STF. Leto requests to see QUEEN, and MC heads there with Gavin
Tumblr media
Under Leto’s request, MC enters the orphanage by herself, but meets Shaw in the dilapidated building, who tells her to look for the kidnapped children first
MC meets Leto in one of the rooms, and he has a black box which can be used to steal Evol. He has copied the Evol from the four male leads, and plans to steal MC’s Evol too
MC tries her best to fight against Leto, but ends up unconscious
Upon waking up, Black Queen and Anole have also appeared in the dilapidated building. They have not only taken away the notebook, but have also ended Leto’s life. The black box is also broken
The kids from the orphanage are rescued by Shaw
Victor and Zero return to the Space and Time Administration to fix his Evol
Tumblr media
-
[ VOLUME 9: Ch 35 - 36 ]
With a recent spate of unnatural disasters occurring in Loveland City, a Relief Centre is built to house Evolvers who are discriminated by society and have nowhere else to go
MC chances on Shaw in an alley, who is severely wounded due to an overuse of Evol. She sends him to the hospital
Before he loses consciousness, Shaw returns her the notebook (belonging to her father) that Black Queen took away from her
Tumblr media
In the hospital corridor, a youth hands a black card to MC and tells her to head to the address written on it in order to get rid of her Evol
MC learns from Shaw that these black cards were specially made by Black Queen, and they contain Evol which can influence their consciousness. Whoever touches the cards will think that Evolvers are the prime reason for the unnatural disasters, and that only by getting rid of Evol can the disasters be stopped. Shaw’s Evol has also been damaged by Black Queen
MC also learns that Black Queen’s Evol is the ability to cause a deterioration of Evol. The more she deteriorates Evol, the more powerful she becomes
When MC asks Shaw about which side he’s on, Shaw expresses that he is someone who walks among history, and hence does not belong to any side. He simply wants to find the truth, and push for the truth to be discovered
MC and Minor pretend to be siblings and head to the address stated on the card. They bump into Gavin, who is there to investigate
Under the guise of wanting to get rid of their Evol, MC and Gavin search for Black Queen. In the process, they are pulled into a strange dimension behind the North District Waterfall. MC realises that her pretence of being siblings with Minor was discovered early on
Gavin uses his Evol to destroy this strange dimension, and they leave it together
Gavin tells MC that there are many spots in Loveland City where Evol can be removed. Through the strange dimension of the North District Waterfall, Black Queen has been able to create even more of such spots
Tumblr media
Lucien takes MC to a space where MC can see where Black Queen is, but not the other way round
MC witnesses Black Queen failing to use her devolution ability. Lucien tells MC that as long as MC’s strength grows, Black Queen’s strength will weaken, and she may even become powerless
The reason why Black Queen still exists is because MC left out one world line while consolidating them. Black Queen is urgently harnessing power to destroy MC in order to bring these two world lines together
There’s a sudden uproar at the Relief Centre, and Lucien uses his new Evol to calm everyone down
Tumblr media
Shaw tells MC that Black Queen intends to become the world’s true QUEEN the next day
Victor returns to Loveland City from the Space and Time Administration
During Black Queen’s coronation ceremony, Kiro uses his Evol to command Black Queen to return the strength she stole
Black Queen seizes an opportunity to escape. MC looks for Black Queen and they engage in a final battle
MC falls into Black Queen’s trap, and the latter absorbs a large amount of Evol
Victor suddenly appears. Through turning back time, MC regains the Evol she had lost
With Victor’s help, MC defeats Black Queen
The people who were influenced by the black cards begin to return to normal
Tumblr media
Through Black Queen’s memories, MC sees how Black Queen had experienced the deaths of the male leads in other worlds (but these images may have been falsely created by Black Queen to make MC feel fearful about the ending awaiting her)
Tumblr media
In Black Cabin, Black Queen closes the world line that belongs to her, and starts to disappear
The STF, Ultima Bioresearch Centre, LFG, the hacker KEY and BS’ leader Helios work together, initiating a “New World Plan” in order to deal with the unnatural disasters and conduct rescue efforts
-
[ VOLUME 10: Ch Ch 7 ]
The X1917 comet cluster will reach earth after a month, and the world will be destroyed
MC discovers that one new page has appeared in her father’s notebook. The ambiguous words tell MC what she can do in the face of the incoming comets as QUEEN
Tumblr media
With Shaw’s guidance, MC uses her Evol to look through his Dragonfly Eye, enabling her to read the words hidden in the notebook
At the very last moment, MC will be called to “the other place”
MC spends her final moments with the male leads. She bids them a proper farewell and make a promise to reunite with them in the future (split route)
Tumblr media
MC is brought to “the other place”. In the world behind the door, she meets a mysterious person
MC sits on the throne belonging to QUEEN, and wears the QUEEN’s crown. The world begins to shift backwards to 17 years in the past
When MC opens her eyes and pushes the door before her, she enters a narrow corridor. The scent of disinfectant is in the air, and she sees a signboard saying: Research Room.
So we got CHAKHO back... and what a mess.
[WARNING! I WILL BE GIVING SPOILERS LIKE ITS MY LAST DAY ON EARTH AND WE DON’T GIVE A F*CK]
.
.
.
.
So.. 7 Fates Chakho is back.
But why did these last 2 chapters feel like when Netflix is about to cancel a show and they have to cram 40+ books/volumes worth of story-telling into ONE episode?
‘Cause that’s exactly what Episodes 13 & 14 felt like. Everything was just so rushed!
Like one minute we got explicit acts of cruelty and violence mixed with super long, boring and pointless dialogue. Then the next minute there’s a bit of comedy and then back to Heavy Angst.
I DID liked that we got an actual visual of Narae (Jooan’s Beom girlfriend who was killed by Bulti trying to protect him and WHY Bulti killed her. The main issue wasn’t that she was in love with a human, but more the fact that she pulled her weapon against her own kind).
Tumblr media
CEIN! WE FINALLY GOT HIM INTO THE STORY.... but I was slightly meh with him??
Tumblr media
In the wattpad/written version of Chakho, Cein is introduced as this young lad who had a traumatic experience with a Beom who was going to eat him, yet he somehow survives (Cein lost consciousness before being eaten so he has no recollection of HOW he survived and got out). And also the Beom Brow that lets him see people’s past lives is described as an actual brow he RIPPED OFF from the Beom while fighting for his life.
Due to this event, Cein is left with PTSD that makes him crave other’s company but at the same time FEAR of getting close to anyone in case they turn out to be bad guys. So the Beom Brow serves as a type of escapism from the world he lives in.
He is SO TERRIFIED of Beoms that when he is finally introduced to Zeha’s team he outright refuses to become a Beom Hunter and even leaves, but continues to follow them for a long time.
Yet in the webstoon version he is shown as this extroverted wiseass that didn’t even hesitated to come between the Weapon Shop’s owner and Zeha’s team when it was very clear the guy was scamming them till the point where they got Jooan’s weapon as a “freebie”.
However in the written/wattpad version the scene played out differently. The guys go to the Weapon Shop, but realize they only have enough money for ONE new weapon. Jooan notices the spear and feels a strange attraction to it and for a brief moment remembers Narae so he asks how much for it and the shop owner tells them its worth the exact amount of money they earned from the last bounty. And it is Zeha who offers to buy it for Jooan as a “thank you gift” for helping them in the last mission.
Another detail that seemed to change is the person Cein is shown that connects everyone in Zeha’s party. Like all of them are bound/connected to the SAME past life, like all of them were part of them same being.
Tumblr media
In the wattpad version of the story the entity is simply described as a powerful man dressed in white robes and also having white hair. Which leaves you to believe it could be a sacred being like Haru.
But in the webtoon version we are shown that this being is actually a Beom who rebelled against his kind and fought them until his final breath.
I also don’t recall Hwan appearing so quickly to regroup with them and why weren’t we shown the scene where he goes back to his home and he has the flashback of what happened the night that his family was killed??
Which version is the correct version? The Webtoon or the Wattpad version??
Thots on not me episode 9
1) they did the deeds. And both of them ,like togezzerrrrrr. Chef's kiss😘🤌🏽
2) sean is in love . And smiling. Like an idiot.
3) which is kinda sad if he already doesn't know about the twin thing but very very lovely if he does. I'm rooting ( strongly) for the latter.
4) like the lovemaking? The hands? The thump thump? Like they live in each other's hearts now .
5) the way he wanted to tell him , before . I'm not black. Look at me. Please , I'm not.
6) the way sean was like , i know baby. It's okay. All i want is right here.
7) I'm not equipped to deal with sean being SO in love. The boy's been hurt , hurt and hurt again. White , please don't hurt him at all. Come clean soon.
8) eugene is... There's something there. Why do i feel like gram and eugene got more stories than we know. Like what was Eugene's mind on when she saw the blood. They both had a hand in Black's injuries , i feel. It's purely based on my intuition and i could be 100% wrong. Please DO NOT TELL ME SPOILERS FROM THE NOVEL I DON'T WANNA KNOW.
9) and gram seemed way too sincere to eugene and NOT BLACK when he said you should get back together.
10) the way sean was watching white as long as possible without appearing rude in front of namo. Like he kept his eyes on white and white alone till he started the bike on
11) the dance was very beautiful.
12) gram is still SO hot. But boy I'm getting suspicious 😒😒😒
13) twin reunion. Yay. I felt things. Love from both sides.
14) the slap stung.
15) white and black. Good God. All i was thinkin was black actually does look older and like BLACK. like.... This is the black that everyone knew. Of fucking course , they doubted you. Black is like coal and Fire . You're not black , you're white.
Side note :- Gun attaphan take a bow. Good lord .
16) we all knew it was todd. But how did he ambush black??? The fierce and very very cunning black?
17) and the earrings scene hurt. It felt like someone was tearing something away from white , and it's worse coz black doesn't realise how much , just HOW MUCH , it must've hurt white. After the fight with his dad , he doesn't take them off on screen. It has become part of him.
18) sean and namo. Please both if you handled it as good as it goes. So please be friends. We need both of you working together
19) i like that we saw namo's pain. And i liked it better that someone noticed and takes care of her.
20) dan and yok. Yok is such a dork. I'm scared that we're getting to see so much of him and THEM , coz something terrible is gonna happen to yok. Please don't hurt us like that p nuchie
21) gawin looks phenomenal as the elder cop and noone is mentioning how the clothes suit him. Like the white tee?? Wow.
22) they're both so in love. It's their eyes speaking volumes and then dan saying " not a friend. Phi. "
23) kiss by the backwaters always remind me of together with me and maxtul. I just can't help it.
24) eugene looks like a doll. So pretty.
25) tawi's men are getting close to them and i don't like it. They slid that in , but kinda distracted us with all the fluff and romance but this is gonna come back and bite us sooner or later. Please just let them all be safe .
26) what did dan do to fix his mistake? Did he find the family of the person he killed? I would like to know more.
So many thots. It was such a romantic episode. I'm gonna watch it again , later maybe. Exams are a bitch.
REQUESTS ARE OPEN AND ENJOY LUVS <3
Tumblr media
“Out of all the ways you could’ve brought the band back together,” you say, motioning quotation marks with your hands, “-telling us that zombies are a thing is not a scenario I had in mind,” you shrug.
A sigh was heard from the other end of the phone before they decided to speak, “Well, how ‘bout you turn on the TV and check the news?” Tony asks.
You looked around in search for a remote, grabbing it from the nightstand and turning on the television. Flickered through a few shows finding a news channel and turning up the volume.
“The city of San Francisco, now currently under quarantine, has cases shooting through the roof-” the news reporter announces. “Doctors are working around the clock in full body hazmat suits.” they explain.
“Any more information concerning what caused it?” a news anchor asks.
“It’s still unsure who or what has begun the spread but we will have more information on it shortly. Back to you guys at the station.” the reporter nods.
“Tony, what’s happening?” you ask, looking around the room and beginning to pack your belongings.
“Not sure yet Renee. But we’re gonna need all hands on deck for this one,”.
...
“Sorry to cut your little hiatus short,” Tony mumbles as he struts into the room, tablet in hand. “Still waiting on Cap and the others,” he adds, taking a seat beside you.
“It’s fine,” you reply as sunk into the seat to get more comfortable “Felt like I was running out of places to hide anyway,” you explain “Ross was on my ass almost every-time.”.
“You know, I don’t understand why you even went into hiding.” Tony hums, turning to you.
“Oh, I helped the other side in more ways than you think,” you huffed as multiple pairs of footsteps were heard.
Clint, Sam, Nat, Steve, and T’Challa waltzed into the room with tired smiles. Gear in hand and ready for the fight, just like the good old days. But now, you weren’t sure if there were any of those left.
“Renee,” Nat grinned, welcoming you in her arms “Glad to see you in good shape,” she says as you pulls away for you to hug the others.
“Thanks,” you beam before finding yourself in front of Steve. Who you had a secret (not so secret) fling with before the Accords. Pushing that aside, you pulled him into a hug “Nice beard,”.
“Okay, let’s get this meeting started.” Tony huffs, clasping his hands together.
‘Wait, this is everyone?” asked Sam, which was question everyone else thought.
“Everyone who responded to my phone call? Yep,” Tony confirmed, a pang of sadness hit you.
Did everyone really not want to fight one last time? Try to save the world from what seemed to be its impending doom? You realized something else, what if they were already dead too?
Everyone took their seats and turned to the holographic images being projected from the center of the table.
“So, the world is tearing itself apart by something that’s turning everything in its path into zombies.” He explains, as if it were the easiest concept in the world. “I’ve been getting radio signals from civilians that need help,”.
“This is a rescue mission?” asked Clint, “Where would we even take them?” he questioned.
“The avengers compound, state of the art and built to withstand well...an apocalypse” the billionaire explains.
“Say we house them here, how long will that plan work? Resources like food and what not’ll run out eventually,” Nat says.
“-And what do you propose we do with the walking dead?” T’Challa asks.
“Kill as much as we can,” You reply. “Figure out weaknesses and hit em’ where it hurts. Maybe we could even find a cure!” you add, trying to give them all hope.
“This isn’t like something we’ve dealt with before. They aren’t robots we can switch off or aliens we can shove through a portal.” Clint counters, obviously frustrated.
“Then how will we know how to stop them if we don’t at least try?” Steve asks, finally joining the discussion.
“There’s the Cap we all know a love,” Tony sighs, “We start tomorrow,” he announces.
...
That night, you threw together dinner and the group sat in the living area. Besides the jazz playing the background, everyone ate in a comfortable silence. You allowed yourself to bask in the last remaining moments of normalcy.
When you walked into your room, everything was just how you left it. Minus the countless used mugs of coffee. But the posters, photos of the team, and tickets from plays and games. Memories.
KNOCK KNOCK
“Come in,” you say and watch the door knob turn.
“Hey,” Steve grins, approaching you with a freshly shaved face. He looked around your room and chuckled “Tony left my office just-“
“-How you left it, huh?” You sigh with smile, taking a seat on your bed and patting the empty spot beside you.
“Yeah,” he chuckles. That smile had you wrapped around his finger in an instant. “You okay?” he asks, watching you space out.
You nodded wordlessly as he took you hand and traced random shapes on it. His tracing dragged slowly up your arm, to your shoulder, then your chin.
You turned to face him with a dark shade of pink overtaking your features. Steve knew that if he said anything, it would ruin the moment because he would get nervous and ramble.
...
“Come on,” Steve breathed as Bucky kept running towards the quinjet.
Confusion glazed over his eyes as you let go of his hand. You looked back to Nat, who was holding back T’Challa. Then you turned back to Steve and cupped his cheek.
“I can’t. I’m sorry.” You sighed at feeling of him relaxing at your touch. “I’m sorry,” you repeated as a tear stained your face.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Steve assured, pulling you into a hug without hesitation. He took in a deep breath and let out a sob. “Look I’m sure you-I mean we will-Could you-“
You gave him a bittersweet smile as he tried to put his words together before saying…
“Just kiss me like you’ll miss me,”
Thats not as bad of a cliffhanger as I thought it would be, actually. Dgm Hallow reflection (+spoilers!) below. Long post!
(I wrote this right after I finished Hallow a week ago but Ive been ditzying it up so its late. May expand kn some points later)
Tumblr media
(That screenshot is technically relevant bc its during Tykis speech which is a super important scene, but also I just. Really like how Hallow portrays Allen. Its all just very very pretty.)
Everything seems to be trying to set up complexity—obviously, thats obvious, agh.
Kanda views the Order as an enemy but works with them for Alma and to make up for awakening Allen/Nea. Tyki speaks to Allen about the duality (trinity?) of possessing innocence and being an exorcist and being a noah and being hunted by Apocryphos (who is innocence) and etcetcetcetc. Allen himself feels it, as he is confined and beat by the Order. An akuma lives (remains unsaved as well) because Link, representing the Order, confines him. His “Noahness” provokes his home, while his “Exorcistness” prevents him from allying with the Noah.
[is Link actually dead?]
A point I find interesting is that Allen wouldve probably went with Apocryphos if he hadnt killed Cross. He talks about how he can seperate Allen and 14, something which Allen definitely wants at that point because it would solve all his problems. When they first meet, Allen only hits Apocryphos and saves him from Tyki because he saw the memory of him murdering Cross.
[is Cross actually dead?]
The Alma Karma and Kanda arc SLAPPED. I read it several years ago, but…its just very well done. Tragic. I love it.
[Kandas not dead! Yo]
[Ill stop now.]
I actually really like Tykis speech to Allen and Allens choice to leave everything behind to figure out what the fuck he wants and what he is, on his own. Its… weirdly fitting. I wouldnt have thought of it, but I cannot think of a better direction for this story to go.
Its almost coming-of-age-esq. Everything is against Allen right now, even his own head. Im really excited to continue the manga from where Hallow left off. I know its still ongoing (and I dont have the money to buy more than a few volumes right now), but I heard Hallow ends at around vol22-23. Theres currently 27 volumes, I think. I really like this story and where its going.
Im sad at how little Lavi was in Hallow. He probably wouldve taken up too much time—they only had 13 episodes and it was mainly focused on Kanda and Allen (which I love!).
I also wanted more. Nea. Noah. Mana. I want to know all of the things about them. Allen was just about to speak with Nea, just try to understand him and talk a little, when Apocryphos came in and interrupted. Maybe we get a scene like that in the manga… though, its also difficult to tell. Nea is trying to possess Allen, he may not want to “chat.” I just want to know more about them.
Id like to talk a bit about Nea, Mana, Allen, Cross, and the Earl now… theyre a complicated bunch.
From what Ive heard online and from the 2006 anime+Hallow, heres what Ive figured out:
Cross knew Nea and Mana before Nea died. Nea died 20yrs before Allen was born. Mana and Nea are brothers (twin?), though I think Nea was the older one(?).
Mana went a bit bonkers after Nea died. Cross says he may have not even really remembered everything while he was raising Allen.
Allen is conflicted about Mana. Hes unsure if Mana loved “Allen” because he would be Nea or because he was Allen. (Points to dream where Allen is following Mana who keeps calling him the wrong name.)
Cross promised Nea he would look after Mana because Nea would rewaken near Mana eventually.
Nea is 14 and hes attempting to take over Allens mind. He wants to destroy the Earl and take over as the Earl (or at least thats what he told Earl).
The Earl, despite being the one to kill Nea when he betrayed him, still loves Nea very much. He desperately wants Nea back at his side. The other Noah, notably Sheril, are… uncomfortable with accepting the traitor.
Now, lets get into more sussy territory.
Mana is the Earl. Big “maybe.” They both wear top hats is my main evidence lol. Also Ive heard some things about it online.
Other notable things I saw in Hallow:
Allen was a little shit before Mana died. Cross notes this in the last episode of Hallow and we see some of it firsthand in earlier eps. Apparently, he adopted a lot of Manas traits (politeness and formal speech, notably) to deal with his grief.
Cross has dad energy for Allen. You cant take care of a child for that long and that intensely without some paternal instinct kicking in.
Similarly, Allen definitely felt some affection for Cross. Though their relationship is often joked as being terrible (and it certainly wasnt good, especially considering that Cross took in Allen so he could foster 14), Allen is hella pissed at Apocryphos for killing Cross.
The name thing—Cross says before Apocryphos kills him, something along the lines of “He didnt tell me his name was Allen when I met him.” Was this meant to imply his observation of Mana, or that Allen was never really Allen? Sighs.
Also, the whole Walker thing. Just very sweet in general.
Interesting that Tyki is the one to give Allen the “come to jesus” speech. Tyki is established to be a Noah who still really values and holds onto whats left of his human life, so he (to some extent) can sympathize with Allen more than other Noah. He tells Allen to leave every side and figure shit out himself, something which doesn’t immediately benefit Tyki, but will benefit Allen.
Theres an overwhelming sense of resisting/being uncomfortable with ones life being on a predetermined path. This is an fitting theme to introduce in a story that focuses heavily on religious aspects. God in dgm and hallow is an… odd figure.
RWBY Volume 8, Episode 13 (Worthy)
Well, wow. That sure was an episode that happened.
Thoughts under the cut.
Anyone who leaves spoilers for episode 14 on this will get blocked.
- First of all, I want to now talk about the spoiler I saw for this episode last week, to put the anger from my last post into context: After I had just finished watching episodes 8-12 and started writing my post about them, I went into one of the RWBY tags bc I’m dumb and saw a post that said (I don’t remember the exact words, but more or less): “I’m so glad Yang is finally dead, so now her fans can shut up about her and everyone can ship Blacksun instead.”
… Yeah. Imagine seeing that when you haven’t seen the actual episode and have no idea what really happened. I honestly completely panicked for a few minutes, before remembering I don’t actually know anything and this might just be a “Weiss gets impaled in Volume 5, but one episode later it turns out she’ll be fine” situation. So then I had to look up what actually happened to Yang, because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to sleep. So, to the person who made that post: Fuck you. Not only did you freak people out for no reason (because come on, there’s no way falling into the void actually kills you – and even if it does, we at least definitely don’t know that for sure after episode 13), but even if Yang had actually died, it’s super shitty that your first reaction to a beloved queer character’s death would be “yay, now people can ship my m/f ship instead”. Like, I don’t care if you personally dislike Yang/ dislike Bumbleby/ prefer Blacksun – show a little bit of decency.
Phew. Sorry, I had to get that off my chest because it really made me angry. Now let’s get into the actual episode:
- “Worthy” as a title pretty much already made me predict that Cinder would succeed in her plan, since “you have to be worthy” was what Watts told her in his speech. She’s gotten the message and is now back to efficient plans – and while I love to see it, it also very much scares me when it comes to our heroes’ survival chances. The last time Cinder was doing well, we lost Pyrrha, so… help.
- And gosh, this whole episode was so intense! I feel like it mostly set up a bunch of very intense situations that are going to escalate in the last episode that I’m very much not ready for.
- I still think the whole central location between the worlds is really beautiful, if dangerous. (They should have specified to Ambrosius that they want handrails or something.)
- Nora using her hammer like a witch’s broom was amazing.
- I also loved the scene with Jaune and the people at the train station; that was really funny.
- The middle of the desert might not have been the best place for the exit. Didn’t the group consider that there might be a sandstorm or something else unpredictable out there? Couldn’t they have picked a better exit point?
- Cinder causing an explosion in the middle of the evacuation that throws multiple people into the void was bad and all – but it was still one hell of an entrance!
- I love that now that Cinder realized that she has to rely on teamwork, she’s suddenly being so nice to everyone. Apologizing to Neo, complimenting Watts on “tearing the kingdom apart with nothing but his intellect”, that soft “You deserve this, Arthur”, complimenting Team RWBY on their plan, thanking them for teaching her “one last lesson”. Yeah, maybe she’s just talking to Neo and Watts like this because she needs their help, and to Team RWBY because she’s confident she’ll win – but it’s still amazing to see the shift in her attitude and how she’s clearly changed her tactic.
- It’s insane to me that some people correctly predicted that Cinder would ask Jinn the last question based JUST on the fact that there’s a part in the opening where everyone else freezes in time while she walks past them. Holy hell! I love trying to guess stuff based on the intro, but I would have never thought that far.
- Cinder’s question to Jinn seems like a waste considering it was Jinn’s last question, but maybe it just seems that way to us as viewers because Jinn didn’t reveal anything we didn’t already know. Was it the right thing for Cinder to do? I don’t know, to be honest. Yes, it did give her the chance to ruin the heroes’ plans, but I have a feeling Salem won’t be happy about the question being gone. Pretty sure Salem was going to ask Jinn how to get the Beacon relic, and now she can’t do that. (Cinder ruining Salem’s plans for the beacon relic? Let that be foreshadowing, please.) I mean, maybe it’s worth it from Salem’s POV if it gets them the staff and then she’ll have 2 of the 4 relics – but they could have still gotten the staff later, while I don’t know if Salem has any plan B for the beacon relic. And I’m a little worried about Cinder now. I always thought that Salem wouldn’t kill Cinder no matter what, because she still needs the Fall Maiden for the beacon relic – but if she now has to wait another 100 years for the beacon relic anyway, I’m not sure if she’ll have a reason to keep Cinder alive. (And I’m still worried about that “Some lives will end much too soon” line playing over that scene of Cinder clutching her Grimm arm in the opening.) I also wonder if Cinder even knew that this was Jinn’s last question. Did Jinn even tell her that? Also, when will the 100 years even be up? Do the questions just reset every 100 years regardless of when they were used? So maybe we’re already at year 80 or something and will only have to wait 20 years?
- The cut from everyone at the central command place screaming to them being dead was kinda funny in a “very dark humour” way.
- When Harriet first jumped onto that ship with the bomb, I, like an idiot, thought that she was finally being sensible and trying to get the bomb as far away from Atlas and Mantle as possible, not that she was trying to still drop it on Mantle. She and Ironwood might as well be working for Salem’s team at this point, because they’re doing everything to help the villains’ plan. And the villains are even counting on it! Watts freed Ironwood from his cell and is piloting Harriet’s ship. Those two are just straight up helping Salem’s team in their attempts to… what was it? Save Atlas?
- Ironwood killing Jacques was awful and proves once again that Ironwood has zero morals left. And I didn’t like Jacques, but that was the kind of death that absolutely no one deserves. He had no way to escape or fight back, he was defenseless, locked up in a prison cell with nowhere to run – that’s not just a murder, that’s an execution without a trial. And Jacques wasn’t even a threat, he wasn’t in the way of any of Ironwood’s plans. Ironwood killed him literally just because he could. And no one who thinks they’re the good guy (and Ironwood still thinks he’s the good guy) should go around just killing people who aren’t even a threat.
- And then we have Yang falling into the void. Honestly, as heartbreaking as Blake’s sobs and anger are, I kind of love this from a “supreme angst, let’s see my faves suffer” perspective. That said, Yang better actually be fine or else.
- Actually, my prediction is that the rest of team RWBY will jump into the void to save Yang in the last episode. Because they’re all falling in the opening, and because “Sometimes it’s worth it all to risk the fall and fight for every life”. That’s pretty much the only prediction I feel somewhat confident about, for the rest I have no idea.
- I wonder if it would have been better if Penny had just gone through the doorway and gotten the staff to Vacuo. I get why she didn’t, because Yang just fell and her other friends were in danger… but at the same time, she was supposed to protect the population and the staff (and she has the maiden powers that I’m sure Cinder still wants). If she had just gotten out of there, at least the group in Vacuo would have had some help against the sandstorm and the Grimm. But then again, it would have also severely weakened Term RWBY’s chances against Cinder and Neo… it’s a tough call, really.
- “Why didn’t you just learn your lesson?” “Oh, Penny… I did.” Okay, but that’s the thing: She really did! Just not the lesson Penny wanted her to learn. And notice how Cinder called Penny by her first name again? She didn’t use to do that. I still think somewhere down the line Penny has earned her respect.
- I wonder if Penny’s technically weaker now because she’s human (?? is she??). She’s definitely not used to fighting without her robotic parts (as you can see when she tries to reach for her swords and realizes they’re not there anymore). I summoning those swords like she then did her semblance or another maiden power?
- Blake now has to choose between helping Ruby and helping Penny and Weiss – gosh, the suspense…
- I’m glad Vine at least finally tried to stop Harriet now! (Better late than never.) But I really wouldn’t blame Qrow and Robyn for crashing into their ship. It’s not like they had any way of knowing that Vine was trying to talk sense into Harriet. Also, Qrow crashing through Harriet’s windscreen was amazing.
- Winter and Ironwood are going to fight to the death and I’m so scared of it. (I just need Winter to survive, please…)
- When Weiss described the doorway as a “one-way ticket to Vacuo” last episode, I briefly wondered if that meant they wouldn’t be let back through, but then I brushed it aside and didn’t think about it too much anymore. Oh, damn. You really do have to be very specific with Ambrosius.
- I’m not even sure which location is the best to be in right now because they all seem very unsafe: Atlas and Mantle are unsafe because Atlas is falling, because Mantle might still get blown up by Harriet, and because Salem might still come back any time. The place between worlds is unsafe because of the void and because there’s a big fight happening right there. And Vacuo is unsafe because of the Grimm and the sandstorm. So really, they’re all awful for the civilians right now.
- And now I’m thinking the volume might actually end with the protagonists split into three groups as well: Team RWBY in the void (that they’ll spend Volume 9 finding their way back from), one half of the other characters in Vacuo (Oscar, Ren, Emerald, maybe more?), and the other half still in Atlas/Mantle (Qrow, Robyn, Marrow, Winter, maybe more).
- I’m super nervous about the last episode. I haven’t seen any spoilers at all so far, and I plan to keep it that way. I’ll probably completely ignore anything RWBY-related until next week because the anxiety would kill me otherwise. I’m really worried we’ll get a character death or even several. And ironically, my first prediction on who might die this Volume (Penny, Nora, Winter, Cinder) hasn’t changed all that much. I’m worried about Penny because she has the Maiden Powers and the staff, so Cinder will come after her (but I really think it would be an awful writing choice to kill her off after we just went through so much to save her). I’m very worried about Winter because she’s engaged in a duel to the death with a man who has a big canon that he just blew someone up with. I’m worried for Cinder because of the opening and because Salem might be pissed at her for using the last question. I’m worried for everyone who’s still on Atlas and might get blown up by the bomb (Qrow, Robyn, Marrow, Winter again). And I’m very worried for the characters who are in the in-between realm. Not so much Team RWBY, but I’m worried about Nora, Jaune, and Penny. So yeah, I’m pretty much worried about everyone and very much not ready. Now let me ignore RWBY’s existence for a week – or only reblog posts I already have saved as drafts – because it’s the only way I’ll know peace.
nervous, genya shinazugawa.
Tumblr media
spoilers for volumes 14 and 15 of demon slayer!
synopsis: genya has no clue how to deal with girls, especially when they’re all over him and the girl in question is you!
“TANJIRO, WHERE’S TANJIRO?”
you were practically raging, grabbing every member of the kakushi by their collars and thrashing them around until you’d gotten a coherent response
unfortunately, they were so shocked by your behavior that they could barely form words
“[Y/N]-CHANNN”
your head whipped around, narrowing at the person who’d used the cutesy honorific
oh, it was just zenitsu
he was twirling around in ecstasy, a blush adorning his cheeks as he approached you
the kakushi had already escaped your grasp as you’d loosened your grip at the sound of your name being called
“it’s a beautiful day, isn’t it [y/n]-chan? we should go pick some flowers!”
your erratic stare had softened at the sight of your friend and you offered a small smile
“i’m sorry, zenitsu. but i’m rather busy at the moment... do you happen to know where tanjiro is? i’ve been meaning to visit him.”
his sweet expression seemed to sour at the fact that you’d mentioned another man
“yes... he’s still recovering at the estate i think. he’s probably sleeping too, so you might not want to bother him.” he replied nuzzling into your side, beckoning you to stay
“it’s alright, i won’t wake him. thank you zenitsu!” you cupped his hands in thanks, bowed, and made your way to the butterfly estate
of course he’d be there! it was often used as a recovery base
you scolded yourself for your stupidity, picking up the pace as you burst threw the doors of the mansion
it’d been a few days since tanjiro had arrived back at headquarters, but you were on a mission and hadn’t heard of his condition until you’d returned and you were extremely worried
was it left... right? you paused momentarily to gather your thoughts before taking a swift turn and flinging open the door to the infirmary
“eh—[y/n]?”
there he was, sitting upright, hands laying on his legs
“TANJIRO!” you cried, throwing your arms around him in haste
at his slight wince, you immediately jumped back, afraid that you’d hurt him
“i was so worried... i heard that you were seriously hurt”
tanjiro gave you his signature smile, his vibrant eyes being covered by his kids
“ah don’t worry about me, [y/n]! i’m still in one piece.” he smiled enclosing your hand with his own
you smiled at him, tears threatening to spill
he was too kind for his own good
he had so much warmth and light to spare, that he even extended his grace to something as lowly as demons
and there he was, almost beaten half to death, yet he was comforting you
tanjiro kamado was the kindest man you’d ever met, and probably would ever meet
you shook your head of your thoughts and slapped his shoulder, to which he gasped
“how is it that you encounter so many members of the twelve kizuki? and they’re all upper ranks as well! you have to be more cautious, you fool!”
he rubbed his shoulder as you lectured him, holding back his laughs
“you worry too much! plus, we defeated them so all’s well, yes?” god, he was so optimistic. you were too, but to a certain extent
“yes... i guess so.” you sighed, eyes filling with enthusiasm. “it’s so amazing that you were able to kill it, tanjiro! you just keep getting stronger and stronger, i’m quite jealous.”
you were actually very jealous
when you’d first met tanjiro, you practically outranked him in every aspect except... well your actual rank
you were taller, physically stronger, and more agile
though he was still a few centimeters shorter, his physical strength and speed had increased
tanjiro modestly shooed his hands, blushing at the flattery
“don’t praise me too much! i couldn’t have done it without haganezuka’s excellent swordsmithing. mitsuri and muichiro were also fighting. oh! and genya—genya, too! he was amazing and he had this cool gun that hurt the demon!”
tanjiro pointed towards the bed to his left, and it was only then that you noticed a figure was inside the white sheets
you gaped at the figure, who’s back was facing you
another demon slayer had also faced an upper-ranking member of the twelve kizuki? that was amazing!
you quickly detached yourself from tanjiro and sat yourself on the edge of the strangers bed
at the feeling of weight pulling the bed down, the mysterious figure sat upright and stared at you wearily
and then, his face exploded into scarlet
“wow, genya-san! you fought the demon as well? i knew you were strong, i could tell when we met during the final selection.” (you used the term met lightly)
as you spoke to him, you’d unconsciously cupped his hands and stared at him in awe
oh god, a pretty girl was holding his hands. a pretty girl was holding his hands!
it’s a well known fact that genya shinazugawa could not talk to girls
or make eye contact
or... acknowledge them
he had no problem pounding into girls when he was younger, but now that he’d matured, he noticed how dainty and pretty they were
especially you
he remembered you from final selection, too
you were the second to arrive (after inosuke) yet unlike him you’d waited patiently for the other survivors
though what he remembered the most was that even though you had just spent seven days on the brink of death, you were smiling brightly
it angered him. why were you so happy? you’d just escaped death and probably watched others be torn apart by demons
but right now, your smile was giving him butterflies and turning his cheeks red
you waited for a reply, or at least an acknowledgment, but was met with silence and downcast eyes
he must be shy, you thought. but he didn’t really strike you as the shy type.
“ah, please forgive me genya-san. i made myself too familiar with you. but i was wondering if you could show me that gun tanjiro was talking about. when you’re better, of course!”
though you were just as enthusiastic as before, you distanced yourself from him, drawing your hands back from his
he almost frowned at the loss of warmth, but you couldn’t tell from the nervous, almost constipated expression on his face
“o-ok...”
at the words, or rather, word, you gasped and smiled sweetly at him
“thank you! get well soon, genya-san! i’d really like to see that gun as soon as possible.” you noticed that your words were rather rude, so you added a “and you, too. i’d like to see you too.”
genya stiffened at the words, his soul leaving his body
to your right, you could see tanjiro holding back a bright smile
due to his keen sense of smell, he could smell the nervousness oozing off of genya
and the overwhelming, sweet scent of a blooming first love
Nora saying when the Grimm came her mom ran and left her behind, and then it was Ren and Nora, hurts.
All this time I assumed Nora was an orphan, and that's why she dressed funny and scavenged food from the trash.
But that wasn't true. Her mom was *there*. And when the Grimm attacked her mom just ran, leaving Nora behind to fend for herself. Nora wasn't an orphan then. She was a neglected, unloved child forced to fend for herself.
*Thought*
I'm seeing a split opinion about whether or not Salem believed Cinder's lies. And I also unsure of whether she did or she saw right through them and is biding her time.
But it would be so poetic if she DID believe them. She views herself as an all powerful, immortal being, who should be beyond such tricks. She is practically a god.
And yet, a human lying to and tricking the gods is exactly what got her into this mess in the first place.
After all, even the gods in Remnant are fallible.
If you told me during volume 1 that I would call an episode a 'lighter, happier episode before shit hits the fan in the climax' when it contained:
A character nearly getting shot dead for insubordination only to be rescued by someone else tackling him to the ground and arresting him
That super emotional scene between ren and nora
Ruby pretty much at her breaking point
Ruby and Yang crying about Summer.
Penny fighting a virus and asking Ruby to kill her so she doesn't follow through with what the virus is forcing her to do
I would have laughed at you
Cinder lied to Salem's face. Cinder lied to her face. I love competent Cinder so much (in the "she is a threatening villain and thus makes a good story" way).
"Sorry, team good used the last question, and Neo killed Ruby"
