Curious about your interpretation of Cazador's old master Vellioth
My partner has a comic called DE RERUM NATURA about Cazador's origins and Vellioth's eventual death. I assign to his personal canon and love his take on Vellioth's design as a gigantic human man ala DorĂŠ's Bluebeard, as well as the really rough dynamic he thought up between them.
To give a really quick summary: Vellioth is turned by Cazador's mother, who naturally mistreated him in all-too-familiar ways until Vellioth eventually killed her, became a full fledged vampire himself, and turned her son into a spawn and kept him around specifically to spite her memory. Making a mockery out of Cazador's entire existence while telling the world that he was his sole, charitable caretaker; and Cazador a simple dullard in need of constant supervision since his mother's passing.
As DRN kind of implies, while Cazador's hatred towards Vellioth requires no justification and his ascension to power is definitely a practical priority, he does do it first and foremost because he is moved by the death of his mother. I really, really like this, as it clears the way for Cazador's future obsession with the concept of family - as well as holding the thread far into the past for this cycle of abuse in the hands of authority figures and relatives, since Vellioth very much occupied a "step dad" sort of role in his life for so long.
Like... Slight pivot, but I am so much less interested in endless torture and physical humiliation than I am in the gut-churning dread of a man who has to look into the face of another, for hundreds of years, with the visceral knowledge that he devoured his mother piece by piece like a roasted porkloin - a dehumanization so speakable, and yet so simple. Yes, all of the spawn in every generation suffered, but I don't think anything they went through is worse than the mind-games and the severance of their lives from community, love, and family - and I think that this version of Vellioth & Cazador story illustrates that really well.

love languages ŕż ŕż*:シďž
hp boys x reader (harry potter, ron weasley, fred weasley, draco malfoy, cedric diggory, remus lupin, sirius black, james potter, tom riddle) backtrack: inspiration: my post for pjo (here) that has the same concept
harry potter
giving: acts of service
harry always fights to protect those he loves, lest we forget the battle in the department of mysteries to âsaveâ sirius, and even those he could not care less about (ahem draco). heâs self sacrificing, literally walking to his own death in the last book to save everyone else. and on a day to day basis, he goes out of his way to include or be nice to everyone, especially those who donât really have friends, like luna or neville. heâs less about grand gestures and sappy love, instead preferring to care for his loved ones in practical ways.
receiving: words of affirmation
before harry went to hogwarts and met his friends, he literally received no love. petunia, vernon, and dudley would emotionally and physically abuse him. for that reason, I think harry would really appreciate someone praising him or just simply saying an âI appreciate youâ or even âI love youâ. also for that reason, I think physical touch might be a receiving love language for harry too.
ron weasley
giving: acts of service
oh gosh here we go, I already know thereâs going to be so many âacts of serviceâ guys on here. ronâs one of the most loyal people in the series, heâs always there for his friends and he is super selfless and protective of them. curse the movies for taking away his moment where he stands up on a broken leg to protect harry from a literal serial killer (well not really, but they didnât know it at the time). heâs not the most, uh, articulate should we say, but he always helps his friends out.
receiving: words of affirmation
growing up in a family as big as his, ron got cast aside a lot. I mean, his literal deepest desire was to be noticed by others and not be overshadowed. and deep down he definitely knew that his family loved him, it was just kind of hard to see sometimes since his parentsâ and siblingsâ attention was always so divided. (side note, as an only child I could not imagine being in a family of ronâs size; one of my best friends has two sisters and sheâs one of the nicest people I know, and I definitely think thereâs a correlation) so if someone were to finally notice him and genuinely love him for who he is and tell him that, it would make him so happy. finally, heâs enough as he is. finally, he feels like someone loves him.
fred weasley
giving: quality time
quality time and acts of service are the big ones for fred. heâs willing to put himself into dangerous situations during the war (rip fred weasley, you deserved better) and the battle of seven potters. besides that, he thrives on bringing people together and making connections. heâs super friendly to everyone, a classic jokester, and he shows his love through the time he spends around people, especially george. they were always together. it hurts that they can't be anymore.
receiving: quality time
fred spent like all of his time with george when they were first starting weasleysâ wizard wheezes. granted, that was because starting a business takes a lot of time and effort, but it shows how fred is willing to spend time focusing on his passions. that led me to think heâd find it super important to spend time with his loved ones, and he would want his partner to spend a lot of time with him too. he uses humor as a defense mechanism and a coping mechanism, but deep down he knows that the war is actually dangerous and will have real consequences, such as bill getting mauled or george losing an ear. (or, you know, FRED LOSING HIS LIFE.) so he treasures every little moment with his loved ones.
draco malfoy
giving: acts of service
thinking about this was actually really hard. dracoâs such a cold person, and heâs never shown love; all his selfless actions can be chalked up to fear and having no choice. so I had to look at when and why he married astoria. and this meant dipping into the cursed child, which Iâve never read fully but have read enough to be able to say I hate it and I donât accept it. he truly did love astoria, even when his relationship with his parents suffered because of it. he became a better person because of astoria--miss girl really said âI can fix himâ. he even went so far as to disregard his fatherâs wishes when he wanted to let the malfoy line die with him. so I think when he really does find someone he loves, draco can be a pretty selfless person.
receiving: words of affirmation
gosh, just how much do people suck up to him? he was treated like a king in his early hogwarts years, and he loved it. I think the deeper reason is that he grew up without a ton of verbal affection from his family, so thatâs something he craves from other places--a partner, or peers. the first time he hears an âI love youâ, heâd be absolutely shocked and maybe turn cold or shut down. after some time and patience from both of you, heâd slowly begin to accept praise or loving words. if heâs feeling brave, he may even reciprocate them. only when itâs in the middle of the night and heâs pretty sure youâre asleep, though.
cedric diggory
giving: quality time
cedric spent a lot of time with cho when they were together; they would always go on dates and spend a lot of time together in between classes. it shows how much he values spending time with his loved ones. another giving love language of his is definitely quality time, because cedric is 100% a giver. he tipped harry off about the golden egg. he wanted harry to take the cup when they were in the maze. heâs just such a nice guy.
receiving: physical touch
this is for two reasons. one because I want it to be, and two because did you see his face when rita skeeter ruffled his hair in the movie? the guy was not having it, but I bet if the right person did it heâd be all blushy and smiley. also when harry went to the courtyard to tell him about the dragons, he was literally laying in his friendâs lap. and I canât remember correctly, but wasnât it said that he and cho would constantly hold hands? yeah. enough said.
remus lupin
giving: acts of service
remus does so much for others. he was one of the best defense against the dark arts professors for a reason. and even if his competition wasnât so poor, Iâm sure he wouldâve been just as popular. heâs a natural mentor and caregiver, always there for others and sometimes neglecting his own needs because of it. he engages with his students on a personal level, especially harry, and he is always willing to put himself in danger for others, as seen in the battle of seven potters and the battle of hogwarts.
receiving: words of affirmation
this and quality time. for quality time, he spent a lot of time with his friends in school, and he spent a lot of time with harry when he was the datda professor. this time really helped grow his relationships and helped him feel close to his newfound family. as for words of affirmation, I think itâs obvious; as a kid, he never really had friends, and as a result he secretly yearns for encouragement and emotional support. kind words and whispered promises that everything will be okay. that is how remus lupin feels loved.
sirius black
giving: quality time
sirius spent so much time with his friends when he was young. he had a really rocky relationship with his family, so he gave all of his love to his friends. he and james were practically inseparable, they had such a nice connection. on top of that, after barely any human interaction for twelve whole years in azkaban, he treasures every single moment he has with his loved ones. itâs like every time he and his partner are together, he looks at them and can hardly believe this is real. but it is real. heâs out of azkaban, heâs free, and he has such an amazing partner to spend the rest of his life with. thatâs decades! (I canât with siriusâs death, I--no. he did not die.)
receiving: words of affirmation
sirius spent his childhood and adult life being rejected and ridiculed. thatâs got to hurt, especially when he was literally in azkaban for something he didnât do. he was so deprived of love and general human interaction for twelve years that I imagine heâd initially be kind of awkward or even scared when his partner first shows him love through praise or verbal affection. after a while though, heâd warm up and hopefully show that youthful, happy side of him again. also, heâd probably be big on quality time, since he got none of it at all during his azkaban years.
james potter
giving: words of affirmation
ah, finally someone whoâs not acts of service or quality time! at this point I think maybe itâs just me. james is teasing and playful with his words; heâs very vocal about his affection and appreciation for his friends and loved ones. he did, after all, ask lily out pretty much every time he saw her. not at all like remus, who is a love letters and secret admirer kind of guy.
receiving: words of affirmation
james loved hearing praise and support. especially when he was in school. fuel his ego. thatâs it.
tom riddle
giving: words of affirmation
I donât think voldemort could physically feel love. I sometimes wonder if tom riddle and voldemort were different people, and honestly thatâs a can of worms I donât want to get into right now. I believe thereâs some sort of theory that he canât feel love because he was conceived while his dad was under a love potion? I have no idea. the important thing is that we all know how good tom riddle was at manipulating people. flattery gets you nowhere, they say, well clearly not if youâre tom marvolo riddle, because flattery got him everywhere. so he would use words to flatter people and show his admiration or appreciation of them, but was any of it actually real? I doubt it.
receiving: words of affirmation
honestly kind of the same deal with draco, but he's a lot worse. he wants to be treated like a king--scratch that, he wants to be treated like a god. he craves affirmation for his greatness and abilities. all his followers praise him endlessly, calling him âmy lordâ and sucking up to him. he also wanted his ideologies to be affirmed and supported by others. letâs face it, words of affirmation were just another way for him to prove to himself that heâs the greatest.
just a heads up guys, I'm so tired as I'm writing this so it was unedited

Veilguard Review: Doom Upon the World
Warnings: Spoilers for Veilguard, very political review (considers race, gender, religion and choice consequences centred around established Thedas).
Another long post: 4k words
In my first review (Love, Wisdom and Pride), I focused on the relationships most pivotal to Solasâ arc reaching resolution: Inquisitor and Mythal (though heavily Solavellan inspired, I tried to be aware of how the Inquisitorâs role as a rival/friend outside of romance was still considered as an important relationship in his story). This review, on the other hand, will focus on the worldstate and what we lost [x], as well as my speculations on which story beats/companions/advisors I feel should have been integrated into the story for a deeper emotional payoff for past Dragon Age players (and overall story cohesion). Â
N.B: This review is definitely a critique of something I love, born from love, becauseâyes, I had expectations; yes, they were high; no, I donât think thatâs a problem; no, I do not hate the game we got, but I mourn for what the devs clearly were building towards with the last 3 games in the series, and from what we know from the internal struggles with Bioware under EAâs helm (as evidence from the development time, layoffs, staffâs disappointment, and the differences between the final game and the concept art) the only thing getting in the way of a truly epic game was corporate meddling and greed.
Spoilers below the cut.
Without further ado, the primary criticism I have is that Varric should not have been our advisor! I read a post somewhere that succinctly surmised the that Varric was chosen as our Advisor so that:
Solas would make an âirredeemableâ mistake for all the Solas haters to use as an excuse to simply view him as an antagonist, simplifying the goal of the game to: stop the elf from bringing down the Veil.
Varric was used for marketing purposes rather than story depth choices; heâs popular, beloved and an easy carrot for the EA stick to dangle in front of loyal fans.
His writer has literally been trying to kill him off for the last 2 games! Varric was supposed to die in Inquisition! (lol)
I firmly believe he should have been holding the blight back in Kirkwall, and that his position as Viscount of Kirkwall should have affected the outcome of the blight spreading in the South!
Advisors in the North
Right off the bat, the two best choices for advisor, (excluding the Inquisitor out of favouritism) should have been Dorian and Morrigan.
Dorian: because weâre in the North, the Shadow Dragons are by far the more âgrassroots organisation against imperial powerâ kind of organised body the Inquisition started out as. Since we donât have a calling to fight against like the Wardens in Origins or a family to try and keep together in a city on the brink of implosion like Hawke, or a pseudo religious-political body to inspire Hope in the faithful like the Inquisitor, Valour, Love and Hope cannot be at the heart of this story. It has to be JUSTICE [x].
Justice for the culmination of Andersâ story; for Merril and everything she endured to repair the eluvian; for Fenris, the origin of his lyrium tattoos (which according to GhilDirthalenâs post, there was a plot point linked to elves whose lyrium bodies did not possess latent magical prowess) and the slaves in Tevinter; for the rebelling elves that should have formed factions as the Dread Wolfâs Agents like the Trespasser epilogue hinted at; for misunderstood spirits hurt by mages like Cole; for the ancient elves like Abelas; for the templars who saw the corruption in their ranks but had no way out because of lyrium addiction like Sampson; for those corrupted by red lyrium that was spreading throughout Thedas with no cause or cure; for the dwarves like Branka, obsessed with the answers held in the Anvil of the Void, or Harding, or Shaper Valta who saw a Titan and witnessed the death of the Legion of the Dead; for Sandalâs prophecy!; for the qunari oppressed by the Qun, turned talvashoth, searabas, hisraad like Bull! Justice for two decades worth of worldbuilding on the part of the writers and the devs who loved telling these stories. Â
Morrigan: is self-explanatory to the story they were crafting between Solas and Mythal. And what would have been even better is if they actually just explained away the Well of Sorrowsâ choice unaffecting the Inquisitor because Morrigan eventually had to assimilate the essence from the well to keep the Inquisitor from going madâlike the anchor had to be tempered by Solas in Trespasser. Easy as that!
The best part is that pitting Morrigan and Dorian as foils of each other further allows the game to have greater stakes and tension because Morrigan (changed by Mythalâs righteous anger and need for justice for what was done to her by the Evanuris) could champion making choices more detrimental to Thedas but ultimately in line with Solasâ plans. And Dorian could make choices that put the safety of Thedasâ citizens at the forefront by sacrificing headway in stopping Solas and his Agents from advancing with their plans!
Best yet, we could have had a hardened vs softened Dorian depending on whether you recruited him in Inquisition, and/or did his quest.
[Inquisitor concept art by Matt Rhodes]
Favouritism Bonus Round: The Inquisitor (or alternatively Morrigan) should have been the voice to champion Rook to seek out the wolf statues, and they should have been present when discussing the memories, as it would have given them more gravitas when uncovering the literal story of "Solas is Andrastian God creating the Veil" or "the Dalish Dread Wolf is being proven to be a saviour" or "Elves originally being spirits in the beginning", or "Titans were at war with the elves" beyond comments like: âOh, Solas regrets thisâ or âThey were doing itâ. (This is the issue with having a âcouch settingâ for a âwar roomââdiscussions feel less intellectual, factions donât necessarily bring their own unique viewpoint into the interpretation of Solasâ decisions/Elgarânan and Ghilanânainâs presence, etc.) Everyone is not digesting the material given like itâs a clue to stopping the world from ending but rather like gossip. With the Inquisitor, as either a friend to Solas, a rival or a romanced Lavellan, finally finding the Dread Wolfâs Achilles Heel after vowing to stop him would have rung true, closed the loop.
Sigh.
This is also why I feel the Inquisitor should have been the one in Varricâs placeâlike literally. I mean recovering from an injury after failing to catch up to Solas in ACT 1, possibly dispatched by Agents of Fen'Harel! Because they could then be forced to pass the mantle to hunt down Solas to âRookâ. Not dead. Or a blood magic illusion. Just, Inquisitor, wounded, making small talk, sometimes bringing up plot points from Inquisitionâyour Hawke on the battlements in DA:I or Alistair in the gardens with Morrigan and Keiran.
It would also make more sense for the Inquisitor to be able to use the eluvian to travel between Skyhold and the Lighthouse, allowing for believable absences during plot points where their lack of action inspite of their presence wouldnât make sense. Not to mention more gut-wrenching if we heard about the South from Inky rather than reading 4 letters!
Previously, I stated how the Inquisitorâs presence needed more weight in the non-Solavellan endings! Some peopleâs Inquisitor befriended Solas, some hated him, either way, the Inquisitor should have been present for the final showdown beyond a passive observer! If the Inquisitor ended up being the last friend/former love that Solas destroys (in a bad worldstate end where you donât collect Mythalâs essence), which then prompts Rook to fight him because Solasâ last tie to empathy failed to redeem him, that would have added so many layers! The Inquisitor falling is the last straw for Solas too, whether friend, lover or foe, he fought beside them, stopped Corypheus with them! The Inquisitor was partially his making of a hero; his first âgoodâ mistake! It would then make sense for him to snap, choosing to be a villain in the hopes of being stopped because he canât stop himself, heâs come too far! Rather than the âI am a Godâ ending they gave us.
Agency of a âRookâ on an Empty Chess Set (Factions and Backstory)
Personally, from both a writing and a viewerâs perspective, I think our protagonist should have always been linked to the Shadow Dragons (and the factions choices shouldnât have been incorporated. This is more because, framing oneâs backstory as being a member of a factionânot a people with established political positions in Tevinterâsiphons the narrative of personal stakes. Imagine being a mage who could have begun with higher approval in Tevinter but lower elsewhere, maybe theyâd be saved from the Venatoriâs thrall that was linked to Neveâs companion storyâagain linked to Ashur and the Dragons. Or an elf mage could begin a storyline like that of the city elf in da:o but focused on the Shadow Dragonsâ tackling slaveryâs presence in Tevinter. A Qunari origin could explore being a refugee aided by the Shadow Dragons as they flee the Qun because they donât fit in the dogmatic religion. A warden could be a criminal in Tevinter, showing us what is considered ârules for criminalityâ in a city that corrupt and extremist.
Overall, the factions donât add much diversity to Rookâs background, backstory, dialogue tree or influence on the world state beyond a last name that doesnât really matter. With a Shadow Dragonsâ background, the very ethos of âRookâ would have been about overcoming oppression, and then the nickname makes sense too, a name to stay concealed, to keep loved ones safe while DAVâs protagonist battles politics, blood mages and blighted gods. It would have been even more meaningful if the nickname âRookâ paralleled âDread Wolfâ, in that it was bestowed by your origin-based backstory antagonist and then used as a call to freedom (we wouldnât even need a cutscene, this could have been revealed in part of their banter/dialogue). This simple choice would have allowed us to focus on Treviso and the Antaamâs occupation and Tevinter and the Venatoriâs rise to power on a more personal level. It would also place our Rook in a position to be a foil to Solasâ âdo what is necessary for the greater goodâ vs âbe better than those that came beforeâ plot lines. Building off this, the hardened companion status between Neve and Lucanis should have formed a parallel, with one tilting towards understanding Solasâ extreme efforts to stop the Gods, whereas the non-hardened character should have taken the role of foil. Both of whom would add balance to the tension when discussing Solasâ memories or even in exploration banter during missions (one the âdevilâ on your shoulder, the other your âangelâ depending on where Solasâ actions stand for you since Inquisition).
Finally, the Shadow Dragons' should have been linked to Dorian more directly, potentially created with backing/support from the Inquisitionâs advisors/Inquisitor directly (since their default attire is the Shadow Dragon apparel).
Companions: Cole for Compassion; Briala for Rebellion and Revenge
Cole
In my review Love, Widsom and Pride, I briefly touched on the fact Cole (whether recruited, not recruited, kept spirit or changed human) was absolutely necessary as a companion. Because it doesnât matter which version was present in the world (RIP the tapestry), every iteration of Cole works synergistically with appealing to Solasâ spirit side:
If he wasnât recruited in Inquisition, he could simply have his default origins as a compassion spirit that âfollowsâ the greatest pain in the Fade that yearns to be healed, giving a compassionate viewpoint to Solasâ folly.
Recruited-to-the-Inquisition Spirit Cole could have a greater connection to Solas than even Varric, seeing as Cole was most likely a literal representation of Solas rewriting his own history of corruption by preventing a spirit from becoming something against its nature.
Human Cole would have a deeper connection to the world of Thedas, and could have been a great tool to prove how change was inevitable, not always a bad thing, and inevitably out of even Solasâ control. And he could still offer insight into Solas' mind via 'remnants' of the time he was more spirit.
Briala
What I enjoy about this companion head canon is that Briala is literally Solasâ direct parallel story-wise:
Sheâs in love with Celene, the âbestâ choice for ruler in Orlais even though she burned Brialaâs alienage. They share a great power imbalance, with Celene able to affect the fate of all elves in Orlais, yet is unwilling to free them, return the Dales, or concede power even though she claims to love Briala, too. Briala is a rebellion upstart, raised by Felassan for crying out loud. She controlled the eluvians and knew how to get around the crossroads, she has more of a bone to pick with Solas than any other NPC not close to the Inquisitor! (Celene and Mythal share many similarities as well, with Celene seen as the more benevolent of rules when compared to Gaspard the Warmonger; and if Gaspard is in power but controlled by Briala, her being dethroned from her seat of power by Agents of FenâHarel when she lost access to the eluvians would have been a great story arc to explore).
Sidenote on DAV's Romance, Companions and Choice Consequence
Building off having either Cole or Briala as a companion, I do think it would have been nice to have them as non-romanceable too. Donât get me wrong, I know it's great to have options, but I do feel making everyone âpansexualâ wasnât the right way to go for all the companions. It takes away character choice, personality, taste and individualism from the companions. Dorianâs story would not be nearly as impactful if he could have been romanced regardless of gender. Solas being unwilling to romance any race besides elf (though a direct correlation to the developers being afraid of the âevil bisexualâ trope that was popular in the 2010s) also adds to his story; where heâs reluctant to see the world as real, to accept non-elven people as having agency, because that would mean he wasnât walking through a see of Tranquil, but instead, he was the Forgotten One out of time.
I also firmly believe that a possible reason Cole wasnât a companion despite there being plans in place that heâd return (Trespasser epilogue slide, I remember you), is because I can 100% see an EA big-wig being like: âHeâs unfuckable. Give us someone hot and brooding and slap a demon in them and youâve got fuckable-Coleâ and then we got Lucanis.
I like Lucanis. Iâm not crazy about him, but I enjoy the Machiavllian family drama. Very Renaissance Medici story beats. I adore Mary Kirby as a writer, too, but I feel the introduction to the Crows of Antiva should have been Zevranâs mantle, or he should have at least haunted the narrative and missions related to the Crow factions (of which there should definitely have been factions within the Crows). Considering the fact I romanced Lucanis, I couldnât shake the fact that a lot of his âacceptance for being bound to Spiteâ beats paralleled a Human Cole having been âcuredâ from Compassion.
The romances seem less⌠memorable to me than past games. The importance of choice means you have to accept the story unfolding based on the consequences of your choices; and gender-locking at least one companion would show the cause and effect of beginner choice. Taash is actually written to prefer women over men, which is vital to their arc around gender dysphoria and being non-binary, they would have been a perfect candidate! I imagine their story would also be a great way to explore how being one race attempting to romance another could have a slower progression rate (again, because of Taashâs multi-cultural background, and their complex feelings at having been raised by a mother so tied to the Qun, them being cagier around a qunari Rook romance would also have added layers!) But with everyone available to be romanced, and having no initial repercussion for early game choices despite which character model would have bruises or cuts (Neve or Harding), genuinely roleplaying as Rook, and not as someone using Rook as a stand-in for ourselves, is more disconnected than previous games. This is why the romances feel off to me. Doing the romanceable companionsâ storylines seem like Iâm the one trying to date them, not Rook. Maybe itâs because Rookâs established personality is the direct repercussion of a sanitized worldstate! Â
Foibles of being âUnproblematicâ: A Sanitised World
The issue with trying to make a game that wonât touch on difficult topics, is that, when you make that game a sequel to a series that was literally built on the backs of tackling real world politics, it makes a lot of the world seem plastic. A poor imitation perhaps.
The World of Thedas book actually tells us that Thedas is a fantasy setting that uses the real world as its backdrop for conflict and world building. Andraste is Joan of Arc. Andrastian faith is Christianity founded by a woman. Orlais is the French bourgeois era. Fereldan is more Highlands/Celtics region if it never had a chance to expand because of the blight. Elves are the disenfranchised (and a direct parallel to popular elven cultures that were often portrayed as the pinnacle of advanced magic/civilisation). City elves live in alienages (literal ghettos). Dalish elves (native to the land) are being run out of their homes, the Orlesianâs are trying to claim the territory for their Empire, and their numbers are dwindling, their culture and language a poor imitation of what it had been, barely surviving colonialisation! Dwarves have a caste system that determines everyoneâs future! Dagna had to leave her home! Harding grew up on the surface. Varricâs whole plot thread anchoring him in act 1 of DA2 is helping his brother discover Deep Roads riches so they can get their familyâs title again.
And through all 3 games prior to Veilguard, weâre told the Ventaori are monsters, the Imperium is crueller to its elves/slaves than any place in the South! The best option beyond turning Feynriel tranquil in DA2 (one of the few Dream Walker mages) is to send him to Tevinter. What becomes of a half-Dalish mage in Tevinter? Neve, our first companion beside Harding, is determined to make Dock Town a place worth living! So, to walk into Veilguard and have no slavery storylines in a place called the fucking TEVINTER IMPERIUM (modelled after the fucking Roman Empire close to collapse) is so jarring. So unbelievable. What injustice is Neve battling? What woes has Dorian been dealing with in the Magisterium?
The closest we get to seeing the darkness that exists in the world (besides the hanging corpses lining the streets of Dock Town if you save Treviso, is the side quest where a father makes a deal with a demon to keep his child alive by sacrificing so many innocents).
And then there's Tevinter's "savage" neighbours, the Invading forces of the Qun! Frightening, right? But from the blasĂŠ manner the Qun's rigidity is discussed, it is framed as though anyone can simply up and leave the Qun if they so wished it, according to Taashâs mom. Yes, Taash is being hunted, and their mom is taken prisoner, but it was all in service to a tablet that discussed fire-breathing, not about returning to the Qun. Iron Bull being deemed hisraad holds less severity when the consequences of leaving a subjugating, dogmatic, religious-political society are simply... nothing. There's no anchor to Taash being raised in Rivain for safety reasons beyond keeping their fire-breathing secret. And what of all the elves that commit to the Qun? Why are there no elf converts among the Antaam? What about the fucked-up stuff the Dwarves of Kal-Sharok were doing before Veilguard? Kal-Sharok dwarves apparently were changed by the First Blight, and are supposed to have a âtaintedâ appearance according to the World of Thedas concept art book. Why are they just... normal dudes in booby armour (lol)?
[Imshael! A demon/spirit of choice & Calpernia as potential companions is insanity>>!]
I possibly wouldnât have these strong opinions if the games gave the companions more⌠just more âcontroversialâ stories with harder choices! Veilguard in a way feels like playing a game with child-lock on. Yes, what happens to Tevinter or Treviso looks awful when you see it, but the side-quests, companion stories, NPC dialogues and world around the âmise-en-sceneâ donât reflect this--it's like set dressing. The âI canât believe the Venatori are evilâ side comments by Rook in Tevinter when the Venatori takes over become whiny, child-like and âhopes and prayersâ coded. Do something then, Rook. You are the hero of this story, are you not?
I am forever grateful that Lucanis is actually hardened and removed as a romance interest if you sacrifice Treviso (finally, good old dragon age consequences).
Now onto good criticism of our companions!
Companions: The Good, the Balanced and the Essential
Good: Neve and Davrin.
Neve is our eyes and heart to Dock Town, our humanising presence for the Tevinter Imperium. She is also written in a way that I find her to have the best agency as a non-romanced character than most.
Davrin is a breath of fresh air for the reputation of the Grey Wardens, heâs the genuine article. Him owning up to being young and foolhardy when he rejected the Dalish ways in search of adventure, only to be battle-hardened and then become more appreciative of the fact he was taught to live in harmony before he was exposed to the discord of the Deep Roads is such a good character growth moment. Â
Balanced: Harding. Harding grows into a much more invaluable story piece when she unlocks the Stone Sense and uncovers her peopleâs history. Itâs a rather short-sighted choice to have her be one of the Ultimate Sacrifice characters because what becomes of the story of the Stone? Who hears the song? Who will speak of the Titans to other dwarves if she is chosen to go on the final mission?
Essential: Antoine and Evka! No notes, they should have been conditional companions in a side quest! Theyâre fleshed out so well, and their relationship is real and built into their character, but itâs not all they are! Antoine is smart, hopeful and also tortured by the new blight. Evka is powerful, pragmatic and also caring.
The Red Herring that should have been: Bellara as an Agent of FenâHarel! Her storyline would have worked with the concept of being found âsuspiciousâ by players if the Agents of FenâHarel were an active group. A Veil Jumper in Arlathan whose brother got entabgled with a Forgotten One? Someone who is an outright believer in the elven pantheon? O, Bellara, the power you would have had as a possible double-agent in our midst, only for us to have been wrong in doubting her and having it be someone else! Race and position to power should have inforced so many story beats in this game, man!
Finally: Religion, Where?
Iâm a little exhausted, so Iâll wrap this part a little quickly. Religion is paramount to understanding the decisions and states of mind of so many characters in Thedas. Lelianaâs arc alone is one of the most intimate insights into Andrastian faith! The Inquisitor is literally responsible for appointing the Divine! The Divine can call for an Exalted March! The Black Divine is a huge plot point when discussing the differences between the Southern and Northern iterations of the Chant. Tevinterâs Old Gods (Archdemons) are blighted dragons linked to the Evanuris that whisper the will of their masters to humans. Archdemons are responsible for the Blight, our first âsave the world kiddoâ moment in da:o! So where is the disbelief in the streets that Elven Gods exist? Why is it always âOur Godsâ are back? What about city elves who believe in the Chant of Light? Where is the Black Divine? Why is everyone okay remaining Andrastian when the fact Solas made the Veil is revealed? Where is the politics and religious civil war in the streets between NPCs?! Between companions? Why isnât there a cultish, zealous group of extreme Andrastians following Solas around? Why isnât there another version thinking of Solas and all elves as the second coming of Maferath? How are city elves fairing compared to Dalish elves at the reveal itâs their pantheon gunning to end the world? Again! RACE AND POLITICS MATTER! They always mattered in Thedas before, yet here they are anecdotal at best.
The Veil Should Have Come Down
Itâs apparent to me, and numerous others, that Veilguard was stunted by its attempts to be an entry piece that wasnât alienating to new players of the RPG game format, but it was also haunted deeply by itâs very EPIC tapestry mechanic (chocies mattered!). Ironically, Veilguard served to be a soft re-boot of the series. This, I think, was the grandest mistake. If they meant to reboot the series for future instalments, we should have fundamentally changed the physics and rules of Thedas completely to allow the next instalment to start from the literal ground up. By bringing down the Veil, weâd finally free the Titanâs, introduce the concept of Dwarves with magic, awaked the Forgotten Ones and maybe allow for new species/lore/concepts to shape the future. And to work around the tapestry, they could have simply set the next sequel 200 years later. Sent our heroes to rest. Ended with a new canvas.
It should have concluded with the very ending that was prophesied by Sandal in DA2:
âOne day the magic will come back. All of it. Everyone will be just like they were. The shadows will part, the skies will open wide. When he rises everyone will see.â
Bonus: Anaris should have been a DLC boss with Fenris involved!
Why, you ask? Just this data-mined codex entry still present in the game:
Truth be told, like they did with Corypheus in the Origins DLC, I think they could very well bring him back as the big bad of DA5âwhich I think should have always been about fleshing out the war between the Titans / the Forgotten Ones / Evanuris!
Anaris and a waking Titan?! That would have been beyond amazing!
Which⌠again, is why the Veil should have COME DOWN!
P.S.: I know a lot of these criticisms seem like unhappy nitpicks, but I did enjoy Veilguard, I got an ending I could live with. BUT I am so angry by how many roadblocks are placed before game devs with a clear story in mind--as is obvious with the concept art book. Obvious threads were leading to Veilguard having always been the end of the Dragon AGE! We kill the last Archdemon! The last dragon linked to the Gods and the blight! The game developers have even alluded to having fought tooth and nail with EA's suits, but could only manage to give us the game we got. And I'm beyond grateful. But MAN does it hurt!
Remember to say thank you to the writers/artists/voice actors on their socials, they deserve a little love too.
Fin!

Oh I know this one! I'm a huge horror fan and not in the usual way I don't care for slashers or final girl survival horrors, I like the more actually spooky and less gruesome stuff, and a part of loving horror is understanding the genre.
No one in my family enjoys horror, fair enough it's not for everyone, and a lot can be said to criticize horror and various horror sub genres. Rape and vore and gore is used too often as shock factors or tactlessly handled. Platforming fucked up world views accidentally or otherwise through horror and using the fact that it's horror as an excuse? Meh not a fan but somewhat more understandable.
The thing about horror as an overarching genre is that it's not intended to scare, I mean it is but that's not the central goal. It's meant to explore the things we are most uncomfortable with. It can do that through scaring, but also through tragedy, through mystery, through thrills and chills (more lighthearted spooks), through morbid comedy, and through heavy fictionalization of very real things.
The thing is, though, horror is only effective specifically with the people whose horror it's addressing, and even then only if it addresses it correctly according to the expectations and experiences of that sub group. (I hit post before I finished oops)
A horror that is effective for me is one that rather focuses on the beauty, reverence and tragedy of the beyond, than cheap scares and shock factors. A ghost story where the ghost may or may not be real. It could be a supernatural entity doing spooky shit, or it could be a manifestation of the deepest most painful experiences of human existence. A ghost can be a malevolent entity, or a figment representing malevolent experiences that are difficult to understand and wrap your head around.
Haunting of hill house explores sudden and traumatic loss, bly explores a loss you know is coming for a long time before it arrives, the turn of the screw (another adaptation of the short story bly is based on) focuses more on how terrifying mental illness can be for those who suffer from it. Lavender (2016) explores imo csa tactfully, depicting it as a family of ghosts luring a lone survivor of a tragedy back home to take revenge on the actual killer, while also exploring how survivors of childhood trauma and especially csa can feel shame and responsibility for the things that happened to them. It even addressed suppression of traumatic memory semi effectively.
You can tell my bias for the sub genre of trauma and tragedy explored through a lense of the supernatural. This sub genre of horror isn't good to everyone. They rarely have gore, they have limited or highly artful jump scares, they favor subtlety over shock value and they make use of the set and the score to tell the story rather than any scary events overtly portrayed. They still have those, but it takes second stage to the story. People who love more traditional horror, jump scares, ghosts that are visible and vocal and violent, straightforward stories where everything is explicitly explained, that's more appealing to a lot of people.
Slashers rose to fame because of the rise in serial killers, found footage worked because we were shifting from analog to digital media and digitizing old analog media unearthed a lot of random shit and sometimes strange and unsettling shit, and people wanted to explore that concept more deeply.
In the 60s horror was a pretty new genre to my knowledge. The closest we got was snuff films (which are mostly lost to time thank god) and Gothic horror, monster films with practical effects, it was a whole new concept and they were testing the waters with godawful tech and even worse makeup, but they stood the test of time because they were the first steps to a whoooole new type of media, where people could explore the most extreme and terrible things we experience in a way that is safe, it feels safe. People like horror because you can walk away from feeling the things you're too scared to feel usually, and go right back to regular life like nothing happened, because technically nothing did.
Now I'm no film historian, the above information is pieced together from random shit I've heard and read and watched over the years, but I think I got the gist of it. Horror sucks from generation to generation, person to person even, because whatever is happening in society at the time, or to the individual in their life, will affect what themes and tropes hit hard for them.
Hill house works for me because I've experienced sudden and traumatic loss and it manages to capture how the grief actually feels over the years. Bly manor works for me because I'm queer, but also because my grandmother had Parkinsons, my grandfather had dementia, my other grandfather had esophageal cancer, and knowing what's coming didn't make a difference in any way to how intensely I've grieved them.
Lavender works for me because I was traumatized by csa and early exposure to sexual materials, and I have had to fictionalize my trauma to be able to cope with it my whole life, and my memory isn't reliable, and if I'm ever driven to it by highly extreme circumstances I would probably benefit from getting retribution for all the shit everyone in my life has put me through.
Slashers aren't good to me because it's cheap shock value, and I feel like a lot of my generation feels the same. Though they seem to be making a bit of a resurgence, and I'm curious to see what the reasons are. Older generations don't like the more subtle mindfucky horror I like, because they don't want to have to think about it. They want cheap thrills and chills and excessive gore that you have to suspend your disbelief for.
I haven't been able to figure out what about slashers are good to older generations, but I would like to know more. This is getting too long and I think I've said what I wanted anyway so yeah, the world sucks in different ways now than it did 20/30/50 years ago, and fictional media will reflect that.
"Why does Gen Z suck shit at horror?" every generation sucks shit at horror. In the 2000's they were sucking shit at found footage, in the 80's they were sucking shit at slasher flicks, in the 60's -- Jesus, in the 60's they sucked so much shit someone went and made a whole TV show where a bunch of guys watched horror movies from the 60's and made fun of how much shit they suck.

Maybe something with Valeria as mom to a very talkative baby girl? While reader is just dying of love in a corner*blink blink* (sry I'm ovulating xd)
This was so cute! :(
I love my angst and tension but I never realised how good it feels to write something that's just wholesome. It makes me wonder how Valeria would actually be if she were a mother. I think I can see her being both overprotective and one of those parents that thinks her kid should break a few bones in life. Not what I wrote here, just a little headcannon.
Tags/Warning: Mentions of Pregnancy, WLW, Tooth Rotting Fluff, Unnamed but Loved Baby
Baby Babble
Tranquility is a heavy feeling. Though it's not similar to the heaviness of hopelessness. It isn't cumbersome rather comforting. You feel weightless as you sink into the couch. Cuddled up under three blankets. After many long, serious talks with Valeria, weighing the risks of having children, you finally proceeded with the IVF process. Due to the nature of Valeria's work, she couldn't be the one to carry. It was a lengthy process with needles and vitamins and pills. Almost two years of preparing and failing. It took a while but finally your body accepted her eggs and you carried your baby girl for eight and a half months.Â
Your daughter was born a little early and a little sickly but made a swift recovery. So energetic and happy. Her conception was difficult, and the beginning wasn't simple, but she turned out to be such an easy baby. Rarely fussing and as healthy as she could be. Valeria didn't carry her, but she's just as invested, if not more than you. Often being the first one to get out of bed and check on her when she cries at night. When handling her baby there is no trace of the violent criminal, instead she's just Valeria. Stripped down of all her complex layers.
A few flickering candles light the clean-living room. A few toys scattered around the open space, stuffed animals and plastic contraptions with cartoonish smiling faces.
"Come here." Valeria coos. Crouched down with her arms spread. Recently, your daughter has begun to start using her legs. Awkwardly stumbling in small bursts before tumbling down onto her knees. Your daughter smiles, her chubby cheeks looking even chubbier and that makes you smile in turn. She pushes herself onto shaky feet and takes cautious, wobbly steps towards her mother.
"Ba! buh." She babbles. A talkative thing, she is. Valeria has taken it upon herself to start teaching her the basics of Spanish. Even before she started to crawl Valeria was dutifully making flash cards. Simple words and grammar. She hasn't said her first word yet, but you believe it will be soon.Â
"That's right, come here mija."
Your daughter blows raspberries and falls to her knees. Landing soundlessly on the carpet.
She gets back up and continues on. Your persistent little girl. She makes it into Valeria's arms where she's promptly lifted up.
"ÂĄMi niĂąa fuerte! EstarĂĄs corriendo de un lado a otro en poco tiempo." Valeria says, voice high pitched.
"No baby talk." You remind her gently. As hard as it is, the pediatricians discouraged baby talk. It can negatively impact the development of their speech.
Valeria sighs and nuzzles her baby's nose with her own. "I know, I know." Valeria jerks her head away as your baby swings a tiny fist at her. Eliciting an amused chuckle from the both of you.
"Mmm." Your baby hums. "Mma."
"It sounds like she's saying 'ma.''" You remark, lips twitching from how precious she is.
Valeria holds her up and looks at her, smiling warmly.
"it does," She laughs. "'mama', say 'mama.'"
"Am."
"Ma-ma." Valeria walks over and sits down next to you. Adjusting the blankets over her thighs. Your baby sat on her knee with an arm holding her up. You lean against Valeria.
"Mam."
Her little voice makes your heart swell. What will she sound like when she grows into her forever voice? She blinks her big brown eyes, so much like Valeria's.Â
"My beautiful family." Valeria murmurs softly. Kissing your forehead.
"Mama."
You gasp in excitement. Grabbing Valeria's arm. "She said it!"
Valeria strokes your daughter's cheek.
"You're so smart." She says thickly. "Say 'mama'. Say 'mama' sweetie."
"Mama!" Your baby squeals. Valeria's face lights up. You're overjoyed that both of you can be here for this milestone.
You yawn but fight back sleep. Wishing you could stay in this moment forever. Capture it in a little bottle to carry around with you. To hold and admire in your darkest moments. A reminder of what you have and what you're living for. Your wife, and your daughter. The two most important people in your life.
"She'll be graduating college before we know it." Valeria whispers fondly. Resting her head against yours.
"Shhh." You reply. "Don't say that. She'll be this small forever." You gently trace the curve of her nose. Trying to burn the sight into your memory.

The world had decided long ago that nothing goes without effect, good, bad, and indifferent. Every action and every motion will have an equal effect. This is the philosophy that was shoved down your throat since you could understand it. So why did you have such a big Effect?
The taps of rain on the roof was the loudest sound in the room. Sitting Idlily on the edge of the bed, your eyes stayed glued to the fire flickering in front of you. The brilliant light reflects in your eyes as it dances freely, but the fire is not the real point of your focus, no you are too lost in your mental prison. You force yourself to relive the memories and feelings, just to occupy your time. Your eyes canât help but drift to the newspapers chaotically scattered across the floors; âTyrannyâs Last Remnantâ is what the newspapers had dubbed you.
The media had spent the months since your familyâs imprisonment to tear you down ruthlessly. They say that you still lead a life of luxury and opulence because you werenât punished like the rest of your family. Your eyes snap back to the fire, letting go of the breath stuck in your throat. you fall limply back onto the bed, as it creaks. The room around you was not a good reflection on in light of the accusation against you but you had no control of the room.
You wanted to hate the new place that you are meant to call home, but you couldn't even utter a complaint about it. You let these thoughts drift to the back of your mind. They werenât nearly as loud as your memories.
You are stuck in a never ending cycle of self reflection that comes with your predicament. Maybe if your were more honest maybe you could see that you put yourself there. Everything you around is nothing but static. Your hands desperately grasp for the sheets of the bed, you no longer can feel them. Your mind races as your breathes grow shallow and slow. A sinking feeling takes over your body as your consciousness fades. You are sent off in your memories as the rain and fire grow into nothing but a quiet whisper.
When you come back to awareness, you no longer feel sheets of silk covering a plush mattress on your back, nor are you surrounded by the high walls of your room. Rather rounded stones of a river banks press in to your back as steady streams of spring water wash over you. When you open your eyes, you find that the water is not clear but rather unearthly cosmic colors whirling around as they rush over you and the stones are not a soothing gray but a chilling black, with your skies and ground bleeding into each other making them one in the same.
An empty laugh escapes your lips echoing in the empty space you always find yourself in, you want to feel something more but you felt too tired. All you can do is recall, back to the times when if you had even barely uttered of a complain it was dealt before you could even think again. You were pacified with gifts, territories, and new subjects to learn about. This was expected with being a royal, as your family had put it. They had found solace from their so-called stressful lives among material possessions, and it seemed as you would have to as well. You were always grateful for the lessons and gifts, but never once had they actually filled your deepest desire. Your deepest craving,
unconditional familial love. You yearned for it, yet it never came
You are ripped from your thoughts as a coldness washes over you. no longer surrounded by streams of spring water running over your almost lifeless body, you feel specs of snow and hell slowly beginning to cover you consuming you and your entirety as you fall deeper into the memory.
Echos of muffled hiccups and sniffles bounced off of the empty sumptuous palace halls. A child held they hands over their mouth, a weak attempt to silence their cries as they balled themselves up in the corner. They looked no older than 5, yet the way their face felt like they had seen the worst atrocities in this world could make you think other wise. You recognized the eyes without fail, it was you. You recognize this day, too. This horrid day.
Bells tolled in the distance startling you out of your âdaydreamâ, not that they were in your mind to begin with. You didnât move from your corner, you never wanted to move again. Your sobs becomes quieter as your tears dried, the bells continued on as servants rushed back and forth past you. They never once looked your way, as you lifted your eyes from your knees. They all looked panicked about something. Talking in quick whispers, they mumbled about âmust findâ and an âheirâ. You kept quiet as about a dozen more passed you, not even sparring a glance to you.
Eventually you got bored of the Methodic foot steps of the passer-by, you rested your head against the windows as the whispers and foot steps become distant as the bells finish their final course of rings. Back then, you thought it was funny how the bells still rang even well after the turn of the hour. Normally it was saved for the founders day and the rulers birthday; now you wish you had ran back then.
You had settled back into your abyss of deafening silence; staring out the window with distant eyes as the snow waltzed down from the cloudy skies above, but a looming figure watched you from a distance. You had become a perspective child, you felt their eyes on you when they first started staring. You didnât want to pay any mind to that, âmaybe they will go away if I donât look for themâ is what you thought. The figure never looked away, the presence of the stare only grew more intensely focused on your unmoved figure.
You hadnât move to look at the figure, you were lost in your thoughts, but the burning sensation intensified in your chest and began to crawl in to your hand and up your throat you knew they had drew closer to you. You whipped your head around to the figure, finally giving to what you thought the they wanted.
âHelloâ the figure, now more clearly a man, softly said to you, as he kneeled down to your eyes level with a soft smile etched on to his face with warm gaze that accompanied it.
You were taken back by the manâs soft demeanor, the burning in your body had disappear the moment you saw his eyes. âHiâŚâ you stumble over your words as you were still to focused on how warmth from his gaze felt so unfamiliar yet, you had never wanted something to continue more.
âI am Bruce Wayne.â He offer out a hand to you, and you to reached out to take it but stopped yourself from taking it. Oh, You remembered that name from a list your parents had educated you on. His eyebrow creased and his smile fell as you retracted your hand.âAre you okay?â
Your parents said that with him especially to be more mindful of your actions because he was very important to your family, they warned you of the effect you may have. You always abided by the philosophy your were taught. âYesâ you hurriedly standing up and greeted him with a shallow bow, try your best not to trip over your feet. âExcuse me for my response,â you held an even voice as you rose up from the bow, keeping a straight back. âI am _ __, it is my pleasure to meet you, Sir Bruceâ He was richer then your family and held no official titles, the King and Queen had offered him a dukedom when his company had helped the empire through a drought, but he turned it down.
âIt is a pleasure to meet you as well, your highness.â His smile returned quickly after you exchanged greetings. You gave him a look when he said âYour Highnessâ.
âI am sorry Sir Bruce, but I think you have addressed me wrong. I am not a child of a current or pervious monarch.â You politely corrected him. He looked put off by the correction, you hurried to correct your act âwhat I meant was-â you were stopped short by him
âNo, itâs okay. It was my mistake.â He seemed to relax as he watched you stumble over your word like any five year old child should. âI seem to have confused honorifics once again," He laughs "I hope that you excuse me I am still new to society.â You couldnât help but feel a small flames of kinship burn in your heart as he spoke.
âI am too!â You blurted, eyes glistened with a hint of excitement. âToday is my first official day in society, or that's what my mom said.â
âOh really?â Bruce tilled his head, rubbing his chin as if he wasnât aware of it âWhy today?â
âI donât know,â you voice became hushed. You hadnât stopped to think about it for long, you were just a kid excited to see new people.
âPerhaps, we can figure it out together.â Bruce stood up and offered his hand to you once again. You stared at his hand, something in your little mind started to itch. You took his hand with out hesitation this time.
âI would like that.â You gave him a small smile as he lead you down the hall.
You and Bruce spent the better part of an hour talking about many things as you roam the cold palace grounds. You hadnât even noticed the larger amount of guards pacing the halls looking for something, while they mutter about being punished for âlosing someoneâ. You were too distracted by the feeling your heart and head screamed for you to focus solely on Bruce. You werenât sure what it was then, but you never wanted to let it go.
He seemed impressed by your knowledge, you could see glints of fascination in his eyes, as it absorbed his mind. You were a well educated child, even at this age, as it seemed. He indulged you with many different topics, from the basics of favorite color and animal to astronomy, science and literature. It was bliss for you.
But it would end for you.
âWhat about your family?â Bruceâs question was innocent enough, any reasonable adult would ask about your family. âAre they looking for you?â

i only watched the first few episodes of hazbin and am fairly neutral on it as a whole and while i think the hatred of viv is a little overblown at the end of the day i agree that she needs to grow up and get off the internet and like be fucking professional. i also agree w you that while her initial idea is really interesting the way she goes about the characters and world building leaves a lot to be desired for such a cool concept. which brings me to your hh rewrite, which i honestly love to death. i am rotating your charlie redesign in my mind microwave. i never really cared much for the original charlie design despite enjoying her character but your design i absolutely love. i also really appreciate all the thought that went into your redesign of angel even tho i donât really have any problem w his of design. i love the world building of his mafiosa past and i really wanna know more about his little sister molly (who shares a name w my nonna) as well as where in italy his family is from. like is he northern or southern italian? (probs southern given the mafia connections) did he go to catholic school? did he maybe get kicked out of catholic school (my dad did lol). was he born in italy or is he a first gen kid of italian immigrants born in New Yoik? I also just love the 40s cartoon vibes he gives, that boy absolutely had his first crush on popeye the sailor man.
THANK U SO MUCH!!!!! đŠˇđŠˇđŠˇ I think Angel would get kicked out of Catholic school. heâs a troublemaker .

Not only a Tommy bashing fic, we're veering into one of those fics that has OOC in front of every character name and the only thing canon about it is the way people look.
listen I'm too upset to really Process right now but so far this season, maddie has been.... let's just say i don't trust the writers to treat her well. they ALMOST got it right, having her talk to her husband about wanting to have another baby... and then flushed that Significant moment down the toilet by making her, a grown ass 40 year old woman, accidentally pregnant again. because birth control doesn't exist, i guess, and family planning is a foreign concept to her, as a woman with a history of PPD and medical training. the whole POINT was for her to make a CHOICE to either get pregnant on PURPOSE, knowing she'll be prepared this time around, they'll do it right, they'll work together, they'll get help. or, not wanting to risk it, and making the CHOICE to adopt.
like it's bad enough her entire character arcs have been 1. abusive husband/DV and 2. motherhood and PPD.
because that's what women are for, silly! being wives and mothers!
but the very least they could do is treat her with a shred of respect.
i love maddie so much. i can't wrap my head around her blase attitude re: buck's spiraling, her biphobic/homophobic comment about buck's ex gf, and now this "the universe will bring you someone special" yeah, maddie? like it brought you? or was it actually that you and your husband fought tooth and nail for each other? just... the overall fuckery. i'm so fucking mad. my maddie would never.

Okay, here's my little secret project I mentioned earlier â Toga tarot cards! I've done a tarot reading and am gonna draw every card I got
3 of Cups is always about harmony and girl friendship to me, and it suits Himiko SO WELL
And I came up with a few vibes/headcanons this card gave me:
- Himiko LOVES giving presents. Sharing things is actually her love language
- there are times when she constantly feels restless and/or lacking something even if things are perfectly perfect. This state goes away after venting to someone important to her
- Himiko has a sharp intuition. Her instincts can be described as predatory
- she's the embodiment of "found family" concept. lacking a true bond in childhood, she surprisingly brings a sense of belonging and acceptance to any group she becomes a part of
- despite it all, it's hard for her to draw the line between attentive and needy. she just can't understand why people wouldn't need her presence and contact constantly, so when her loved ones hint at her being overbearing or needing space, it's like a physical hurt

The Concepts of Community & Family as it Relates to Thai Buddhism in Peaceful Property
I really really enjoyed watching this series. I am someone who grew disillusioned with Buddhism at a young age for very personal reasons, only to find my own version of a relationship with it as I grew older and learned to appreciate it from a different perspective. So the spiritual meaning behind this series really resonated with me.
I can only explain things to the best of my personal knowledge, so my apologies if anything is factually incorrect.
There are four basic tenets that one must cultivate in order to achieve true happiness. They are known as the brahmavihara (ŕ¸ŕ¸Łŕ¸Ťŕ¸Ąŕ¸§ŕ¸´ŕ¸Ťŕ¸˛ŕ¸Ł). 1 - Metta (ŕšŕ¸Ąŕ¸ŕ¸ŕ¸˛): Literally translating to mean 'goodwill', it is a genuine concern for the well-being of others. 2 - Karuna (ŕ¸ŕ¸Łŕ¸¸ŕ¸ŕ¸˛): Literally translating to mean 'compassion', it is the recognition of another's suffering as one's own and a selfless desire for that suffering to end. 3 - Mutita (ลุŕ¸ŕ¸´ŕ¸ŕ¸˛): Literally translating to mean 'kindliness', it is the feeling of experiencing sincere gratification from the happiness and success of others, regardless of self-contribution. 4 - Ubeka (ŕ¸ŕ¸¸ŕšŕ¸ŕ¸ŕ¸ŕ¸˛): Literally translating to mean 'equanimity', it is the ability to remain impartial combined with the understanding the we cannot mitigate the personal karma of others.
Essentially, the brahmavihara teaches us to always place others above ourselves... while realizing that they will be responsible for facing their own consequences if they fail to do the same.
How does this play into the "family" dynamics that exist in PP? Oddly enough there are certain facets of Buddhism that preach 'anti-family' values, as family can be one's primary source of attachment and suffering. There is a quote that states, "Family is the blood that burdens you." However, when a familial bloodline has lost its way (or in this case, has been "cursed"), Buddhism encourages surrounding yourself with a community that is organized on a familial basis... what we would call 'sangha' or 'found family'. Valuing the members of that found family above corrupt ideology would realign one's path toward enlightenment. Or in simpler terms, the people we choose to surround ourselves with can spiritually save us from ourselves.
Home's family has been "cursed" by the three poisons of Buddhism: greed, hatred, and ignorance. Phon's greed and value of worldly possessions over others has led her down of path of literal darkness, toward a belief in the occult. Somkid's hatred toward his father has fueled his deceptive behaviors... which he saw as a way to reclaim a father's love (that he believed he never received) from the people who didn't deserve it. Home's grandfather was ignorant as to how his actions, or lack thereof, affected the family that surrounded him.
Home's own version of ignorance would have led to his own karmic downfall. The series does a great job of having Home slowly discover the true meaning of home by integrating him within a 'found family' that teaches him the values of the brahmavihara... which ultimately leads to his spiritual 'awakening' (in a sense).
Metta/Karuna: Communicating with and healing the souls of the spirits the group encounter, requires compassion and understanding... a sense of community/sangha that these spirits and Chobkol (the magician) were lacking.
There were several instances of compassion born out of goodwill, the most obvious being between Home and Peach. Forgiveness is a big deal in Thai Buddhism. It is one of the cornerstones of what we refer to as "harmonious justice", as it promotes ideals of true selflessness. Peach forgiving Home because he's seen the changes in Home and how this one action does not define who Home actively wants to become was really really important. Home and Peach exist in balance of one another... keeping them on a shared karmic path where Home can no longer 'turn a blind eye' to his family's injustices (we could get into that more, but that'll make this even longer than it already is đđđ). I think having Tay and New take on these roles to almost ease the minds of non-Buddhist viewers toward a more Buddhist ideology was actually quietly genius.
Sangha is also what heals the vengeance in Kan's heart, born of the teachings of Metta: "We must refrain from inflicting suffering upon one another and be free from vengeance." It could have been woven into the narrative with a bit more finesse... but I digress.
Ubeka: Home accepts the rightfully directed anger and complaints against him and his family for the harm they have caused. His partiality toward his family, simply because he is related to them, disappears. He stands against his aunt and fights against his uncle at the risk of his own life. And he does so by still allowing them to face the karmic consequences of their own terrible crimes... whether they are at peace with it or not.
Mutita: Home celebrates Peach's dreams above his own wishes... without knowing that they would eventually coincide. I could even argue that their eventual correlation could be a result of Home's 'good karma' paying forward.
Home had to reevaluate his core morals in order to be free of his family's curse (meaning within himself). All these representations of Buddhist notions, born from within his newfound family, are what define Home's idea of the true meaning of home... and happiness.

Headhunters Pt. 1
17 Again AU: After a disastrous first day with the twins, Stan swears to do better as an uncle. But fate loves playing tricks on him and the magic 8-ball in the attic is more than it seems.
Now on top of having a pair of twelve year olds around the house while he tries to finish the portal and bring his brother home, Stan has to deal with being back in his seventeen year old body! Summer has never been weirder in Gravity Falls.

Legend of the Gobblewonker (Art)
Prologue, The Legend of the Gobblewonker (previous)
It was only with mild surprise that Stan woke up young again.Â
Gravity Falls weirdness wass unreliable on any given day. The state he was in didn't seem to be going away anytime soon.Â
So Stan grits his teeth and heads downstairs to make breakfast anyway. This is still fine. He was still fine.Â
He can't afford to keep the Shack closed another day, so he improvises his usual look a bit. The jacket stays even if it's a bit big on him and the shoulders aren't as filled out as they normally are. But he doesn't have to shove himself into the girdle and counts that as a win. Beneath the jacket he dons a plain white T-shirt and a pair of old jeans from the back of the closet.Â
They might have been Ford's at one time, though they seem kinda small...
Mabel calls his outfit 'hipster-business casual' when she sees him and he has no idea what that means.
Wendy is off work that day, leaving him without a teen-speak translator.
Absent-mindedly, Stan wonders if she'd caught sight of him yesterday at the lake.Â
Hopefully, she hadn't and the weirdness will be gone in the morning.Â
In all, the day turns out pretty uneventful â aside from a few tourists giving him extra tips after tours.Â
They thought it was adorable that he was so interested in the 'family business' and laughed when he claimed he was well into his fifties.Â
Not with that baby face, they'd say.
Fine â if they wanted to throw more money at him, he wouldn't complain.Â
Before long, the day is done and Stan eagerly shucks the blazer and his jeans in favor of boxers and a T-shirt. Â
He avoids the mirror, memories of Glass Shard Beach plaguing his every step.Â
He swears he can hear his mother on the other side of the wall, schmoozing some schmuck over the phone. Sees his father glaring at him from the corner of his eye.Â
Feels the phantom hands of his brothers on the stairs, Shermie's large and powerful on his shoulder while Ford tugs at his sleeve more hesitantly.
Stan shudders and leans against the hallway wall, squeezing his eyes shut against the memories.Â
He breathes deep and carries on, planning on joining the twins downstairs when the scent of dust and wax catches his attention. Â
A long-forgotten door beckons to him from down the hall, filled with waxy faces of celebrities and fictional characters.
Huh, he'd forgotten all about these guys.
Outside, he can hear Soos and the kids coming and can't resist the set-up for a good prank.
Having to hide in a dark, dusty room for a chance at a jump scare is worth it.
Stan cackles at the twins' screams before bundling them up in a bear hug.
"It's just me!" he crows joyfully. "Your Grunkle Stan!"
They scream once more out of reflex before settling down.
"Grunkle Stan, what is this place?" Mabel asked, flopping over his arm to stare upside down at the displays.Â
Dipper wriggles in his grasp, in danger of being dropped, before Stan sets them back on their feet.
"Behold â the Gravity Falls Wax Museum!" Stan declares, proudly spreading his arms and spinning on his heel. A born showman even as a young man. "It was one of my most popular attractions... before I forgot all about it."Â
More like got creeped out by the things and hid them away so he didn't have to look at them anymore.Â
Like Ford's old room. Â
The loss of wax Abraham Lincoln makes him pout and whine, but Mabel is quick to offer a solution.
It's amazing to watch the kid work through the night, but when she refuses to stop and sleep, Stan puts his foot down.
He manages to get some food in her and gets her to take a nap, but the girl is too much like Ford to stay down for long. She'll be up soon and Stan will have his hands full.
------------------------
The next morning was... interesting.
This time, when Stan woke up as a teenager, he didn't question it and went about his business. Mabel was still passed out on the couch in the living room, fingers sticky with wax and glitter as she took a small break from her work. Stan puts her pancakes in the microwave and eats a quiet breakfast with Dipper, both of them too out of it to form proper conversation.
Stan didn't know if it was a side-effect of being a teenager again, but it was incredibly difficult to wake up before noon. His mind felt like it was running on empty until the sun reached its peak in the sky. On the other hand, it was easier to stay up at night. It'd work out in his favor when he got his hands on Dipper's journal. Whenever he could swing that.
The kid had it hidden well and never left it laying around in the Shack.
Stan could feel that the answers to getting his brother back were closer than ever and the set-back of keeping it secret at the same time was almost too frustrating to bear.
He huffed to himself and slumped down onto the couch outside, half dressed in his usual attire. The summer morning was turning out to be a hot one and he was already sweaty enough. The jacket stayed off, draped over the arm of the couch and in-reach in case a tour bus suddenly appeared.Â
A rustling around the side of the porch had him tensing instinctively, too many years on the streets and in nasty situations to let him relax for long. Even using his twin's identity didn't keep him safe from everyone after him. And with this face, itâd be even harder to keep convincing people he was the real Stanford Pines.
Stan slipped his hand into his jeans pocket, fingers sliding into his brass knuckles. Even in this body, they fit like a glove, the only consistent part of his life from the past 40 years. The knuckles had come with him from New Jersey, the one thing he'd ever chanced lifting out of his old man's shop.
The thought of Filbrick finding out that Stan stole from him was still a chilling one.
Stan positioned himself to watch the side of the porch as casually as he could, muscles lax in preparation to move whatever direction he needed to.
It probably wasn't the kids â they were naturally noisy. So was Soos. The only other person who'd be hanging around the Shack was...
"Who are you?"
Wendy.
The girl really was cool as ice, merely raising a curious brow as Stan explained his plight.
"That's some freaky shit, man." She said finally, dropping onto the couch beside him instead of heading inside. The slacker. "But you've still got your memories, right? You're not just, like, mini-Stan Pines from 1940 or whatever?"
Stan pinned her with an irritated look. "How old do you think I am? You kids have no idea how age works."
"So?"
"And stop swearing! The kids are around here somewhere."
"They'll hear worse in high school."
"Yeah, but I ain't gonna have them go home talkin' like that and have their parents come up here to murder me."
"Would they even recognize you like that?"
Stan grew quiet, his brow furrowing as he stared into the treeline.
No, they wouldn't.
The last time he'd seen his nephew as himself and not using Ford's name had been back in 1972. Back when he really was seventeen.
Alex had been a baby back then, wailing in his grandmother's arms as Filbrick threw Stan into the street. He'd never known an uncle aside from Ford.
Or, at least, the man he thought was Ford. Alex had visited once when the Shack was still the Murder Hut. They'd spent the month fishing and riding the backroads through town, Stan teaching the kid how to drive and use bad pickup lines on girls.
It'd been the highlight of his thirties. He'd hoped it would be the same when the twins came down to visit.
It was turning out to just be weird.
"I'm sorry, man." Wendy said suddenly, drawing Stan out of his memories about a freckle faced kid with too many freckles to count.
"It's fine, kid." He sighed, rising to his feet and sliding on his jacket. "Go on and get to work. We've got customers to rip off."
Wendy hummed in agreement, her eyes sharp beneath their lazy lids. She held her tongue, though, and he was grateful for that much.
Mabel was missing from the couch when they came in, a nest of blankets the only indication that she'd ever been there.
"Kids?" He called, moving into the parlor. "Where'd youâ GAH!!"
By some miracle, Stanford was standing in front of him. The twins and Soos crowded him, only that familiar face visible over the kidsâ heads and grinning at him.
Which was weird.
Even when Ford smiled, he never looked like that. And he certainly wouldn't smile at Stanley.
"Grunkle Stan!" Mabel cheered, dripping glitter onto the hardwood. "What do you think of my masterpiece? I thought about recreating this new, young you â but that would have been pretty confusing for the customers. Like a waxy twin!"
A waxy twin.
That's all it was.
Ford was still trapped on the other side of the portal, likely hurt and resenting Stan.
"Grunkle Stan? Are you... alright?"
Dipper crouched down next to him, brow furrowed in concern.Â
Stan sucked in a deep breath, vaguely acknowledging that he'd stopped breathing at the sight of what he'd thought was his brother. It wasn't Ford. Just a wax figure.
And the twins were looking at him strangely now. Time to redirect.
"Can a teenager have a heart attack?" He asked seriously before pasting on a cheesy grin. "Because that hunk is making my heart do flips!"
The twins laughed, the tension breaking as Soos helped Stan back up. It was strange how easily the handyman could lift him now, like he weighed nothing more than a sack of potatoes. And he handled him so gently. Like a child!
Stan remembered when Soos was the child, all chubby cheeks and wide eyes as he followed him around the Shack. Like a little baby duck.
He'd been a pretty cute kid, honestly.Â
Ugh. Being young again was turning him into a sap.Â
He needed to change the subject and Wax Stan had just given him the perfect idea.
"Kids," he grinned eagerly as he drew them near. Mabel had a light shining in her eye, apparently on the same wavelength as him. Dipper looked more skeptical. "The Wax Museum is back in business!â

Finished Batman: The Knight.
Oh my god is this a good comic. It very much reminded me that Zdarsky and I are on very similar wavelengths in terms of what we look for in a story. This felt like, no joke, someone had picked my brain of what I expected to see and had envisioned existed during the events of Bruce's training quest, and presented it to me on a platter, divided between 9 separate masters, each chosen and elaborated out of various hints and suggestions over the years.
It wasn't perfect; some of these mentors and masters were in effect standing in as a summary of multiple known characters with these skillsets, while others altered and shifted earlier versions of this history to fit better. But it made for a coherent update, and cleaned up a lot of pre-Crisis and early post-Crisis conception of this period that no longer fitted together as neatly, and sorted out the timings, and made it make sense.
For instance, we know there are multiple single blow techniques, from various secret masters. Shiva knows most if not all of them, and we know of several different masters and traditions who have them (O-Sensei, Richard Dragon and Ben Turner: the Leopard Blow; Legless Master: the Whispering Hand; Master Kirigi: the Vibrating Palm Strike). Shiva also knows The Scapel, The Wind Through the Reeds, The Lion's Paw, Wave and Shore, and the Skullcrack.
But Bruce doesn't need to learn all of those in the course of this story. He needs to learn one, as a representation of that period of his education. And so Master Kirigi got pulled forward to be the representative of the set.
We got more Henri Ducard, and a Ducard that was back to his pre-Flashpoint version. We had Giovanni Zatara and Zatanna. We had Lucie as a stand in for Selina's teachers. We actually got two teachers in the realms of 'stupid shit Bruce has done to his brain': but in this case we got to offset Hugo Strange (who could not trick Bruce, and who must always fundamentally know who Bruce is even as nobody believes him) with Daniel Captio, who is allowed to train Bruce in weird mental techniques and stands in for everyone else (Professor Milo. Dr Hurt. Whoever convinced him to do the ThĂśgal Ritual. Etc etc)
It was elegant. And I don't think it needed any more of Ra's and Talia in it than it had; indeed what we got was a tight compression of some Denny O'Neil and some Mike Barr Ra's story themes into the underlying fundamental origin of the relationship, but not a full discussion of all its features. There are so many more stories out there further elaborating on their many conflicts.
Also Zdarsky does love Tim so much and had fun with parallels and I laughed several times in issue 10 because apparently we were playing Like Father Like Son. Love some good family theming going on in Al Ghul conflict.
It's just been such a while since I had the experience of sitting down and reading a story that in many ways felt like something I had already believed, but had never seen spelled out, and knew that how I wanted it to go in my head contradicted some known comics beats. This smoothed those contradictions out and gave me how I had wanted to conceptualise all of this.

Martyn fanart!
I think this is part one on here so part one of tagging YouTubers in my bad art!
@inthelittlewood
Lore! So to start with Martyn his design and concept is based off the changlings from mlp. He can shapeshift and feed off of others love (it doesnt have to be romantic, any kind of love works). I have since changed a few things about his shape shifting and how he interacts with others. The short of it is he acts more like the reformed changlings (if you know you know) but shares the look of the regular changling.
I thought the tricker nature of changlings matches Martyn pretty well and he could pull many pranks being able to shape shift. (I might have changlings confused with fey but im rolling with it)
Letâs talk lore about how im connecting all these smps! (Specifically hermitcraft, empires, and the life series)
First off, you might have noticed Martyn has a map in the first sketch. This is because inbetween the death games, Martyn does not have an smp to call home like the Empires and hermits. (Because rats and other smps are not included in this) so Martyn spends his time traveling from place to place and maping out the boarders of different smps.
This is also to explain that one time Martyn logged onto the empires server and claimed it wasnt canon. My headcanon (and lore for this rewrite/au) is that Martyn had access to Empires because he had been there in the past to map the smp. He is also really good at getting into locked servers for the pure purpose of mapping them out (it also annoys Xisuma that Martyn keeps getting past his whitelist)
This is a limited life swap au.
This is a pretty basic au, i had drawn Scott and martyn in an attemp to draw them as heathers but realized they looked like the bad boys. Thus i drew a bunch of the other teams also swapping places. The mean gills are now the bad boys, the family is now team ties and vice versa. (Etho is the only one that didnt trade spots cause he was already teamed with Ties and the clockers)
Here is the full page for those who are interested. Iâm sorry itâs unfinished. Feel free to use the idea, I will not gatekeep.
I can barley girlboss and Iâm a horrible gaslighter

[Transcript:
So, I just saw a trailer for a film called Carry On which is a thriller about a security guard being forced to do something for mysterious figure. An hour later I'm still pissed off about it. Not about the plot of the film, at all, I love a good one room thriller (in fact it's pretty much my favourite genre, pretty much every play, every short I've ever written is a one room something).
The problem is I get halfway through the trailer and then they announce this:
âYou will do what we say because we have your girlfriend and/or wife.â Itâs never âwe have your husbandâ, âyour boyfriend,â âfiancĂŠâ.
If it is being switched up then the object â yeah 'cause that's what this archetype is, theyâre an object â to be saved is your father, your brother, your son.
Obviously, not to say this never happens, but it's really interesting the only way they'll let women save men as if it's within that maternal family concept. It's just this weird specific quirk of misogyny in film
I'm just saying that it could be interesting to put more men in situations.]
Iâm very specifically thinking about One Room Thrillers because âgirl goes to save boyfriend/fiancĂŠ from the fae/supernatural on a long journeyâ is a piece of well-worn folklore - but very specifically folklore.
Not thrillers.
