Guillermo Del Toro is really out here making the best possible movies for me to obsess over. progressively undermine every aspect of fascism but also reimagine popular storybook characters but also commentary on catholicism but dont forget we still hate fascists and what if biblically accurate divine beings with Cate Blanchett making monkey noises the whole time and now the pain of immortality but also the pain of mortality and up next its a cri- *stepped on* its a cricket tha- *hit by door* its a cricket that doesnt get to fi- *pummeled by unrolling paper* its a cricket that doesnt get to finish his song but dont worry you get some other bangers in the meantime and the fox is a conman and whoops crucified delimbed and eaten 1.2 times now bury your family and carry the dead in your heart as you wander the earth not knowing if you will die but rabbit poker in undeath

Rewatching Pacific Rim right now, and there's this tiny moment between Mako and Raleigh that I really love
Toward the beginning of the movie, before any of the main action, Mako is showing Raleigh around the shatterdome, introducing him to the newly-renovated Gipsy Danger
Directly after this, Mako shows Raleigh to his quarters and the two of them have this conversation:
They talk a little more, Mako reveals her amazing simulator score, but also confirms that she is not one of the pilot candidates. They then discuss Raleigh's abilities. He asks Mako for her opinion - she thinks he is skilled but too unpredictable and reckless. She ends with this:
Raleigh thanks Mako for her honestly and says she may be right. Then goes on to say this:
And the tiny detail in this scene that drives me crazy is right here
He says when. Not if, when. Mako has just explicitly confirmed that Marshal Pentecost is not considering her for Jaeger pilot. It has already been established at this point that there are only 4 Jaegers left anyway, and that the program is nearing its end, one way or another. In all likelihood, they have very little time left until the end of the whole damn world. Hell, Mako herself just criticized Raleigh, and he could very well wish to get back at her for that, were he a different person. AND YET, despite all of that, he says when. Raleigh has faith in Mako from the very, very beginning, before they even drift together, before he even sees her fight.
And that drives me crazy! I love their relationship so much
#pacific rim#pacrim#mako mori#raleigh becket#raleigh x mako#maleigh#sorry for the low quality screengrabs they're just straight screenshots I didn't do anything special#i love this movie#i know i am obsessed with newt and hermann but I do wish there was also more mako and raleigh fan stuff out there#ALSO raleigh is so repectful of Mako through the whole damn movie#like for real#I feel like most other movies would have the male protag be an asshole here#a woman he doesnt know very well just flat out stated that he's not the right person for the job#he could very easily do the wounded pride thing here and be a complete dick to her#i feel like most movies would go that route and the audience would be expected to find it understandable/justified#but NO! raleigh is respectful. he pushes back on her opinion but also thanks her for being honest and acknowledges that she may be right#i love del toro for that and I love these two so much

Wow, Guillermo del Toro really said You know what my animated kid's musical needs? Catholicism. War. Death. Alcoholism. Fascism. Frankensteinian undertones. A haunting meditation on mortality and grief. Cate Blanchett making monkey noises. And he was so fucking right
#i really shouldn't be surprised after Pan's Labyrinth and like basically every one of his other films but#Pinnochio was extremely good y'all#and the making-of was incredible too - just the LOVE and CARE that was poured into the overall look and design is just???#im frothing at the mouth. i love stop-motion so much#pinnochio netflix#guillermo del toro#ANIMATION IS A MEDIUM NOT A GENRE AND THE STORIES IT CAN TELL ARE SO FUCKING COOL

hi GT!
Lionheart had me the moment you kicked it off with “it’s a nice day to start again.” Might i ask why you chose that particular line?
And, if you havent already answered to this emoji:
❄️
P.s: you have my eternal gratitude for creating the most brilliant piece of writing i’ll ever read. I shout about it from the rooftops, share it on my socials, requested my spouse to read it so we may discuss it together (in lieu of a present for my 30th birthday), et cetera.
I see from your URL you are a fellow lad of taste.
There's a couple things going on in the epigraph for Book 1. On one level, it's a lyric from the first muggle song I picture Draco listening to on his walkman at the end of the book, so there's a cute full-circle thing there. The second layer is the theme of change and redemption, which, in Lionheart, doesn't so much come from major moments or self-sacrifice, but from the slow, grueling, everyday work of living, and living better. It's a nice day to start again because every day is. You always have the opportunity to start making better choices, no matter what lies behind you. That's the thesis of any Draco redemption arc, right? You have to imagine that he could have chosen to be better.
And then thirdly, there's the audacity of doing a full Hogwarts canon rewrite, a good 30 years after the original books came out, millions upon millions of words of fanfic later, and basically asking everyone to read the same story they did the first time around, only different. So it's a kind of winking entreaty. It's saying to readers, many of whom are understandably wary of doing it over, zeroing out the characters to starting positions, and starting from the beginning with 11-year-olds all over again. It's going: "hey. That was fun, right? Why not do it again?"
#thank you so much for the compliment -- honestly it's terribly kind#i hope your spouse likes it. for their own sake also because by god that is so much assigned reading#you're iconic for that tbh. all birthdays should come with a syllabus#oh! and ❄️ ⇢ what’s your dream theme/plot for a fic#and who would write it best?#tbh i've wanted someone to write a really good pacific rim AU for years and years#and it has always fallen juuuuust low enough on my writing pile for me to never get around to it#like it's always the thing i want to write 3rd most and i only let myself have 2 projects at a time#not sure who would write that best - I think anyone who loves and Gets the movies#the premise of which is 'what if you and your soulmate could pilot a 50-foot mech by having mindsex so good it killed godzilla?'#and if you don't want to stand up and cheer just thinking about that i don't know what to tell you. perhaps you have never seen a movie#also like it's about love and trust and trauma and healing. AND killing really giant monsters#and it takes itself JUST seriously enough to nail all of that without getting mopey or goofy#movie of all time. someday i will kiss guillermo del toro on the lips#in my (delusional) world his oscar win was actually a belated award for pacific rim.

pov: I have just experienced something that changed my life forever (I just watched Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio)
#everyone needs to go watch this movie and I cannot stress that enough#it is so so so good and it is so easily the best adaptation of the story#Disney wishes they could’ve made it this good#easily one of the best films I have ever seen EVER and it ranks very highly on my list of favorites#and that’s not even mentioning the animation and music#as well as the voice acting!!! it’s truly a work of art and I promise I’m not exaggerating#genuinely made me cry quite a bit#I feel like if you loved The Little Prince you will also love this#it should also be noted that it’s much more faithful to the original story than other adaptations have been!#and it has a different setting that works excellently#guillermo del toro’s pinocchio#pinocchio

@heartofstanding tagged me in this meme months ago and unfortunately it took me this long to get to it because I had a mild crisis over how long it's been since I've read a novel, let alone one that I loved 😅 so this is nine of my favourite novels (not books, because if I included manga/short stories/comics/etc this would be giant)
0The Picture of Dorian Gray -- Oscar Wilde// Pyrrhus-- Mark Merlis//The Scarecrow--Ronald Hugh Morrieson//Unnatural History--Kate Osman//Tunnels of Blood--Darren Shan//The Coffin Dancer--Jeffery Deaver//Hero--Perry Moore//Frankenstein--Mary Shelley//One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-- Ken Kasey
#TPODG I feel like is obvious. But a genuinely hilarious book that is also poignant and tragic and so /so/ compelling#The more work you put into it the more you get out of it and I get so sad every time I see people#not wanting to look deeper than what's beyond the surface#Pyrrhus gets the extremely high honour of Greek Myth Retelling That is Actually Good#it's less about the Trojan War and more about the journey there set in the 1980s gay scene#the cursed spot that gets Philoctetes abandoned is an effective allegory right until the moment it isn't an allegory at all#and you should see the gut punch coming but somehow you don't#The Scarecrow is my Token Kiwi Representation and it's also the one that got me into the genre I now write almost exclusively#reading it feels like watching a cheesy low budget slasher that accidentally says some really interesting things about sexism and misogyny#(I say accidentally because it is the 20s and my tutor very loudly hated this book for being sexist)#(and I both totally agree and disagree because Prue is the prototypical final girl and needs an adaptation that does her justice)#Also the story of this novel's publication is freaking hilarious and why I will only write under a pseudonym because I would be next#Unnatural History is an exact blueprint of what I love about sci-fi done well in the way we've only very recently started to see on screen#and I hate that the show of Doctor Who rarely if ever reaches this level#Tunnels of Blood is my favourite of the Darren Shan Saga but really is just a stand in for the entire series#yes it's a kids series but it's a kid series that got me into horror and surrealism#and delivers the most effective and heartbreaking plot twist that not even Hannibal pulled off as well#The Coffin Dancer is just some damn good crime fiction and I wish Jeffery Deaver wasn't so slept on#(yes I know The Bone Collector got an adaptation but The Bone Collector isn't even in the top ten of the Lincoln Rhyme series)#unfortunately Deaver's strongest point is his use of point of view#but he still manages to get the twist to be shocking (and Coffin Dancer is the best example of it) in a way that other media fails at#Hero is about a gay disabled teen with superpowers and somehow tumblr does not know about it#It is such a fun riff on superheroes while also being genuinely sweet and touching and sad#It was meant to get a tv show but the writer passed so it got stuck in production hell :(#Frankenstein is Frankenstein. It's just good on like every level. Victor is my problematic fave. I will take no criticism.#I am however on my knees hoping the Guillermo Del Toro adaptation finally gets it right#one flew over the cuckoo's nest means so much to me but no one ever talks about it beyond the Ratched and Mcmurphy stuff#who are the least interesting characters to me. And I find the debate about the sexism ignores that the novel is about the structural abuse#of the mentally ill

Baz Luhrmann's ‘Elvis’ by Guillermo del Toro
Source: Variety
I absolutely love Guillermo's last paragraph, he puts into words what makes Baz's work so magical in such a beautiful way: "Such is the power and purity of Baz — our only Baz and his belief in Truth, Beauty, Freedom — and, above all else: Love. Love of Cinema, Love of Emotion and Love of Love." Yes, this is what has always drawn me to Baz's work. Pure love and beauty. How am I supposed to watch one of his movies and not feel completely full of love and life? It's impossible. I love Baz's passion and love for the stories he chooses to tell. "Love of Love", that's exactly it. He is a Maestro. I really love that Guillermo was the one to review Elvis is in this article too 💕 Both these auteurs surrender themselves to the Cinematic Wonder and Magic. Perfect fit.
#i normally dont comment on these here but im soooooo damn happy like this made my day i love reading what directors think of other directors#and guillermo always has so much love he creates so much joy through his work and his passion this made me very happy i hope yall read this#elvis 2022#guillermo del toro#baz luhrmann#austin butler#article#filmmaking
