Liu Bolin ‘Ghost Stories’
Sculptor, performer and photographer, Liu Bolin, nicknamed "the invisible man", presents in this retrospective exhibition photographs from the four major themes of his work for more than ten years: politics and censorship, tradition and Chinese culture, consumer society and freedom of the press.
"I decided to blend in with the environment. Some will say that I disappear in the landscape; I would say for my part that it is the environment that seizes me.
In 2005, his first series "Hiding in the City" presents a self-portrait of the artist immobile and covered with paint, merging with the rubble of his studio, located in the artists' neighborhood shaved by the Chinese government. Standing as a ghost, showing a forgotten soul in the destruction- here but invisible. The message is strong : denouncing  how a human citizen can feel impotent and powerless in his society and in certain life decisions. A silent protest: Liu Bolin makes himself invisible to get noticed.
Since then, he has created works combining photography, body art, optical art and living sculpture. This man-chameleon poses for hours in front of a wall, a landscape or a monument to get to blend in with the scenery - eyes closed, his silhouette barely visible - with the help of his painters-assistants, without any digital stuff . At the end of the camouflage process, he freezes the performance through photography.
