Le temple, le clocher et l’église de Lourmarin…

Today we came to Lourmarin Village in France to visit Camus' tomb.

The writer received the Nobel Prize for Literature at the age of 44. With the money he won from the Nobel prize, he bought a house in Lourmarin, which reminded him of the mountains of his birthplace, Algeria. The house is on a street called Rue d’Eglise, we will search there after we finish this post.

He played for his local football team. He said, “Everything I learned about morality, I learned it on the football field and in the theater.”

At 46 years old he died in a traffic accident. The Lourmarin football team carried his coffin on their shoulders.

Lourmarin hasn't changed much since his time; it's a small, quiet, calm and very nice place with no tourists visiting. So many art workshops. The tomb of Camus is also a small, simple tomb. He is buried next to his wife Francine.

Picked up two little cones from the grave. I cried a little more. Visiting the graves of writers makes me very emotional for some reason.

Lourmarin

Situé au cœur du Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon, Lourmarin est un des plus beaux villages de France, qui compte 1131 habitants. Lourmarin est situé à environ 35 km d’Aix en Provence, et à 58 km d’Avignon.

Réputé pour son château classé monument historique, mais également pour les personnages célèbres qui y ont vécu et qui y sont enterrés, tels que Raoul Dautry, Albert Camus ou Henri Bosco, Lourmarin est un village touristique très attractif.

Lourmarin est également un village résolument tourné vers le numérique : Inaugurée en mai 2015, au sein de l’ancienne Coopérative de fruits et légumes du Village, la « Fruitière Numérique » est un tiers lieu dédié aux nouveaux usages numériques, ouvert à tous : particuliers, entreprises, écoles, artistes, étudiants…

Le château de Lourmarin

Dans un cadre exceptionnel face au village, le Château de Lourmarin, premier Château Renaissance en Provence, se compose de deux parties : Le Château vieux construit à la fin du XVe siècle par Foulques d'Agoult et une aile Renaissance du XVIe siècle d’une remarquable unité de style. Visites libres et guidées sont proposées pour découvrir ce bel ensemble. Ouvert à la visite toute l'année. Gratuit pour les moins de 6 ans.

Sa '"grande élégance"' se remarque grâce à sa loggia à l'italienne. L'aile Renaissance XVIe siècle est entièrement meublée et contient des collections du XVe au XIXe siècle.

C'est un lieu qui vit toute l'année. En été, il devient une résidence d'artistes (peintres, sculpteurs, musiciens...) On le surnomme La Petite Villa Médicis de Provence.

Egalement Centre Culturel, vous pourrez venir écouter de superbes concerts en été sur les terrasses du Château (Jazz, théâtre, classique...).

Toute l'année, l'Association des Amis de Lourmarin organise des conférences sur des thèmes variés. De nombreuse fêtes ponctuent la vie du château comme la Grande fête Renaissance, un festival Musical et de Pop rock au printemps, Un festival de Musiques classiques en été ainsi que des expositions.

Provence hotel Le Moulin de Lourmarin revives an 18th-century mill. A serene village retreat with modern Provençal interiors.

Pastis-sipping guests relax under shady trees and watch games of petanque being played at new French hotel Le Moulin, which mixes modern and authentic Provençal styles.

Rising French studio Jaune created the interiors of the 25-room Lourmarin hotel, which revives an 18th-century oil mill at the foot of the Luberon hills in Provence’s Vaucluse department. The practice used local hues, materials, artisan-made pieces, and the rustic, rural vibe of Provençal living at the Beaumier-owned boutique hotel.

The sun-dappled ‘village hotel’ has a sweeping, stone foyer staircase with wrought metal detailing, lime plaster walls, dried flower displays, handcrafted earthenware, including glazed tiles made in Millau by Terres Cuites de Raujolles, and a palette of pale hues, sisal yellow and ochre red, which are inspired by colours found in the earth locally. The Luberon has an abundance of ochre deposits that were once quarried extensively.

In the hotel rooms, there are wall-mounted sisal headboards, woven straw lounge chairs from Midi Editions, and wall niches with clean, simple shapes. Painted window shutters frame small windows, and dark orange cupboard curtains feel classically French. They sit beside contemporary pottery pieces and framed paintings, paperbacks and objet d’art curated by studio Be-poles and displayed on walls, windowsills and recesses. Along with a tall, curved glass window and a barrel-vaulted ceiling, Le Moulin’s bistro has looping bamboo chandeliers suspended above tiled tables and beige banquettes, and the original inside workings of the mill on display. Here, diners devour dishes such as Camargue clams marinated in white wine and honey from the Luberon region with Provençal herbs and mangetout. After dinner, they can retire to the elegant drinks bar, which features rich wood and a wall-hung display of straw hats.

ll y a 64 ans jour pour jour, Albert Camus trouvait la mort dans un accident de voiture. René Char lui dédiait alors un poème, "L'Eternité à Lourmarin", dont voici un extrait :

"Toutes les parties — presque excessives — d'une présence se sont d'un coup disloquées. Routine de notre vigilance... Pourtant cet être supprimé se tient dans quelque chose de rigide, de désert, d'essentiel en nous, où nos millénaires ensemble font juste l'épaisseur d'une paupière tirée. Avec celui que nous aimons, nous avons cessé de parler, et ce n'est pas le silence".
