First concert I went to

I would like to say an unknown band called Blur in a tiny tent at Reading in 1994, but I accidentally took my first and very much last acid tab off an apprentice plumber called Tony from Swansea and watched the The on the big stage instead. It was all fine until the music started to creep up from the grass right up my legs and I was surrounded by terrifying gargoyles.

First pop-inspired fashion trends I adopted

I’m afraid I was a relentlessly unfashionable child. I was a square and listened to 10cc I’m Not in Love and The Eagles’ Desperado on repeat. I did love Robert Smith [from the Cure] but I didn’t wear enormous jumpers until my twenties.

First time I realised the BBC drama Sherlock was going to be a huge hit

The read-through was electric, which is not normal. Usually, it’s nerve-jangling because everyone is terrified they’re going to be sacked. A few weeks later I was watching the scene where Benedict first stuck his head round the lab door and said to Martin Freeman: “The name is Sherlock Holmes and the address is 221b Baker Street.” And I thought, yes it is. But really, I realised it was going to be huge when I was on early Twitter and the show went off. When Sherlock kissed [my character] Molly I got 60,000 followers in an hour.

First TV show I enjoyed

Like everyone at school I was obsessed by Jim’ll Fix It. I put two letters into one envelope to double my chances. One was to ask to meet John Travolta because I’d seen him star in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, a film in which he plays this kid that can’t step outside a little plastic tent or he’ll die. The other was asking to meet the pop star Paul Young — I figured I had a better chance with him because he was from Luton. At least I didn’t do what my brother did and write to Jimmy Savile to ask to meet Rolf Harris.

First film I saw at the cinema

The first film I saw on my own at the pictures was Stand by Me at The Point in Milton Keynes. I had seen River Phoenix in the video for Ben E King’s single on Top of the Pops and was utterly love-struck. That was it. River was the only one for me. I still think River was the great acting talent of his generation.

First time I cried at the cinema

Watership Down. That was actually the first film I saw at the cinema. At the Palace in Wellingborough, when I was five or six. It was the first time I had any clue that creatures die. I was very affected by it — I called my next rabbit Bright Eyes.

First actor I admired

Joan Greenwood in Kind Hearts and Coronets. She was the single most beautiful woman I’d ever seen — and I was fascinated by her voice. I also loved Richard Burton’s voice, mainly because he narrated The War of the Worlds, my dad’s favourite album. I wanted to marry Richard Burton so I could listen to him all day long.

First thing I did to embody my new character Deb in Such Brave Girls

I started with her voice. I wanted to use the Northamptonshire accent. It’s the land of my birth and how my whole family talks except for me because I was a scholarship kid at a posh school, and I’ve never worked in it before. And then the clothes — Deb is obsessed with being feminine, so with her costumes it’s often about the cleavage. I think of her as a wily street rat in dangly earrings.

First famous person I met

I didn’t meet anyone famous until my first proper job, which was as a film journalist. The most exciting thing to happen was to go to a film set and sit in Michael Caine’s trailer. He asked: “Would you like to marry me?” I blushed and started stammering at him. And then he politely pushed a little dish of Murray Mints in my direction and I realised that he’d actually said: “Would you like a Murray Mint?”

Mothergate: Time For Some More Horrifying Science Facts

We’ve discussed the history of uterine transplants, and pinned down that it’s 100% possible with zero suspension of disbelief. Uterine transplants were attempted in 1931 most notably with Lili Elbe, who died of immune complications, not complications of the surgery. The first successful kidney transplant, however, happened in 1954, which puts us perfectly in the realm of reality (again, without any suspension of disbelief).

However, something that had been stumping me for a bit was the fact that egg freezing and IVF didn’t really show up in the medical community until the ‘80s. So, I decided to look a little deeper into the history of the subjects. Here’s what I found.

IVF:

Though the first successful human IVF procedure happened in 1978 with the birth of Louise Brown, experimentation with IVF dates back to the mid 1930s.

However, there was success in rabbits in 1959.

This has been confirmed by multiple sources (x)

Here’s why I care more about early success in animals than I do about the first successful human cases:

1. Brenner has no code of ethics, which is integral to the medical community at large. That’s why procedures takes so long to get put into practice. Brenner’s whole thing is no-ethics fringe science. He cares about what is possible, not what’s right or safe.

2. Henward directly refers to both himself and El as being “animals” in Brenner’s eyes. Thus, animal trials are on the board.

3. The rabbit scene, 1959.

Not just the fact that it’s a trapped rabbit in 1959 associated with Henward, but that Virginia (removed/from a distance) and Alice (directly) are associated with that particular rabbit.

In fact, the gutted rabbit is most heavily associated with Alice, which feels like a tie to Mother Alice being described as being cut open in the Indianapolis Gazette (she was compared to a deer, but the “torn open” part remains the same).

So organ/uterine transplants and IVF? ✅ In the realm of possibility both in reality and within the bounds of Stranger Things.

SEX CELL FREEZING:

Sex cell freezing began in 1949 with the discovery of glycerol as a cryoprotectant. In 1950, scientists began freezing various sperm samples and found success in the process. Egg freezing, however, wasn’t successful until 1972, when Whittingham/Leibo/Mazur perfected the slow-freeze method in mouse eggs.

Now you might be going “but James, that means it can’t have happened back in 1959, and that dismantles your whole theory”…Not necessarily.

Bear with me for a second. We’re talking about Hawkins National Lab, a lab on a TV show about a fictional town with kids who have superpowers. We’re talking about the lab that developed NINA, the lab that developed Soteria. 1972 is just 13 years after Henward was stolen. That’s when it happened in real life. We’re in a fictional universe. IVF and egg preservation were dreamed up by Huxley in 1934 with the release of A Brave New World. Suspend your disbelief for a moment.

Could it happen? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Hell, Henward directly equates both himself and El with lab rats in Brenner’s eyes:

All this to say…the science of it?

I wanted to draw something simple of her. Idk if anyone else remembers this but apparently it’s from Eddsworld?? Here’s the first day I’m doing this! I decided to plan which days I’m gonna do, only the ones I have an idea for. (I might use my MSPaint color palettes for some of them too)

Le 21 août

Ce matin on se lève très tôt car de longue date on a des réservations pour une exposition son et lumière par Teamlab. L’exposition est loin de notre hôtel dans les quartiers de l’ancien port de Tokyo. Arrivés sur place on peut constater que le quartier est désert, de grands stationnements vides.

Team Lab Borderless, premier musée numérique au monde, ferme son site fin août. Son exposition roulait depuis 2018. Nous sommes parmi les derniers à visiter l’exposition sur son site actuel. La rumeur veut que Teamlab cherche un site plus central à Tokyo.

Magnifique exposition, mais c’est terminé, dommage. Après l’expo on se cherche un restaurant vers le vieux marché aux poissons, qui bien que barricadé et ses activités relocalisées, il reste quand même une vie commerciale et quelques bon restaurants typiques, on en choisit un qui offre ses sushis au comptoir, faits à la demande devant nous.

C’était les sushis  les plus frais que j'aie jamais mangé et je ne crois pas que ce soit possible de retrouver une telle fraîcheur ailleurs. J’ai choisi une variété, dont mes favoris de tout temps, soit aux pétoncles et à l'anguille. 

Après le dîner on s’est promenés dans ce coin de ville,  en attente du souper-spectacle que l’on avait réservé et le quartier étant très loin du centre on était mieux de rester sur place.

Pour le souper nous avions réservé au Nazuki, un restaurant thématique, souper et divertissement. Louise depuis quelques jours, avait l’estomac à l'envers, choc culinaire, mais le restaurant a accepté que Louise assiste sans payer le couvert, elle a grapillé dans mon assiette! 

Le Japon regorge d'histoires et de légendes. Pour notre souper nous avions droit à 5 services illustrant l’histoire du coupeur de bambou. L’histoire se décline en cinq scènes, chaque scène fait l’objet d’une présentation visuelle sur grand écran et est suivie d’un service s’y référant.

Il était une fois, un vieil homme et sa femme;

Scène 1 Un jour, un vieil homme, sans enfant,  est allé dans les montagnes pour ramasser du bambou et en a trouvé un reluisant. Il a coupé le bambou et il en est sorti une petite fille minuscule, grosse comme le pouce.

Scène 2, suivie du second service

Le vieil homme ramène l’enfant chez lui et la nomme, Kaguya-Hime ( princesse lumineuse). Le vieux couple élève Kaguya-Hime comme leur fille avec beaucoup d’amour et de soin, elle grandi et devient une femme d’une beauté exceptionnelle.

Scène 3. suivie du troisième service

Malgré les efforts pour la cacher, la nouvelle de son incroyable beauté se répandit, de nombreux hommes, dont cinq prince tentèrent, de demander sa main. 

Kaguya-Hime pensa à des épreuves impossibles pour départager les cinq princes, faisant la promesse d’épouser celui qui réussirait l'exploit qui lui était demandé.

Il fût demandé au premier prince de ramener le bol de mendiant en pierre du Bouddha d’Inde, au second une branche de bijou de l'île de Horai, au troisième la robe légendaire du rat de feu de Chine, au quatrième un bijou coloré du cou d’un dragon et au dernier, les cauris des nid d’hirondelles.

Voyant la tâche impossible à réaliser, les trois premiers princes essayent de duper la princesse mais échouent. Le quatrième prince renonce et le cinquième meurt pendant l’épreuve.

Scène 4, suivie du quatrième service Par la suite l’empereur du Japon lui rend visite et en tombe amoureux et la demande en mariage. Elle refuse, lui disant qu’elle n’est pas de ce pays et qu’elle ne peut pas aller au palais.

Cet été là, elle pleure chaque fois qu’elle voit la pleine lune. À ses parents adoptifs elle finit par avouer qu’elle n’est pas de ce monde et que bientôt elle devra retourner chez les siens, sur la Lune.

Scène 5, suivie du dernier service

L’empereur envoie ses gardes patrouiller pour protéger la princesse du peuple de la Lune. Mais le moment venu, les gardes sont aveuglés par une étrange lumière. 

Kaguya-Hime annonce que malgré l’amour qu’elle porte à ses parents et à ses amis sur terre, elle doit retourner avec son peuple sur la lune. Elle écrit des mots à ses parents et à l'empereur. Puis, son entourage céleste la ramène à  Tsuki-no-Miyako.

Riley always considered herself loyal to Mortimer; considering him as her true father. But the scientist could take so much before reaching her breaking point. When she found out about the plan Nick and the human loose in the studio had, she was against it. The very idea of a puppet becoming the very thing that sustains them sounded like complete and utter lunacy; absolute taboo.

Louise: Do we really have to convince her to do this? She made it very clear that she wants to use me for a goddamn lab rat, and she hates your fucking guts!*

Nick: Riley may be a stuck-up psycho. But if you make your argument seem logical, she’ll listen to what you have to say... For a few seconds at best if you don’t delay. *

Riley did not want to become a human at first for a few reasons.

One. Humans were considered as nothing but a resource to be used up. To her, it was like a lion wanting to become an antelope.

Two. If Mortimer found out, he would kill them all for even considering something so outrageous.

Three. Humans die from old age. Eventually, they will die of old age if they go through with this.

But one reason made he consider above all else. Maybe if she went through with it. She would finally be able to learn. To grow beyond want she was. To finally be able to use a microscope; gather more data.

After a long and partly tearful(Mostly on her side) debate with Nick about the pros and cons of transferring their conscious into human hosts, Riley said that she would do it. But only if a vessel would be provided for Rosco. Nick agreed to her terms and put it upon himself to get it while her, Louise and Daisy get the spell/ritual ready with the vessels picked out. I honestly could not let Riley be without her support animal; they’re inseparable(physically and spiritually).

 Riley’s vessel was a homeless woman who was unlucky enough to be wondering the street at night during one of the puppets recent host hunts; while Rocso was placed in the body of a stray golden retriever that Nick found wondering outside the studio and knocked out(I can’t draw dogs right in case you tell). For reasons unknown, the ritual gave him the mindset of a normal dog that doesn’t want to kill everything it comes across and imprints on Riley the moment he sees her for the first time again.

After leaving the studio for good and sometime adjusting to their new bodies, the gang now live with Louise and her mother(who was not happy about the idea at all until her daughter and someone will be revealed soon convinced her that they would not try to kill anyone); now learning what it means to be human and experiencing new issues and thoughts they never thought before.

No longer bound by the mental and intellectual limitation she had as a puppet, Riley is now capable of learning and maintaining knowledge; finally becoming more then what she was originally made to be and realising that she can find a new purpose for herself outside of just being Riley Ruckus.

I like the idea that Riley becomes obsessed with learning new things. No matter the subject, she wants

to learn everything about it. Eventually she rediscovers LOTR and even becomes a die-hard fan(She didn’t like rings of power though) to the point where Daisy becomes deeply concerned and Nick thinks it’s too early in the day to put up with her rants and BS.

And of course, Rosco is the goodest boi and is Rileys pride and joy; just happy to be there.

Last I heard they where combating some rats that have settled into a dump in Red Deer I also learned recently that apparently the fine for having a rat here is $1000cad

I’m surprised it’s in Red Deer and not somewhere closer to the provincial border like Lake Louise or Lloydminster. Red Deer is about as close to the middle of Alberta that you can get lol.

It’s legal for labs and stuff to have rats but that’s it I think. If they catch you with a pet you get that big fine and the animal is seized. Fun fact: I have never seen a rat before!
