The Fifth Republic is the name of Franceâs current government. It began in 1958, after a coup at the hands of the French military in colonial Algeria convinced officials in Paris to dissolve Parliament. Fearing that the military could extend their control beyond Africa, the government called former general Charles de Gaulle out of retirement to hold the country together, as he did during the post-liberation years of World War II. To do so, he crafted a new constitution. Under this government, the president has substantial power, holds a term of five years (it was originally seven) and, following a change to the constitution in 1962, is directly elected by the French people. (de Gaulle held the position until 1968.)
This system of government differs dramatically from previous republics, which relied on parliamentary rule. In the Fifth Republic, the head-of-state appoints a prime minister to lead the Parliament (which is comprised of a Senate and a National Assembly), controls the armed forces and Franceâs nuclear arsenal, can dissolve Parliament, and can hold referendums on laws or constitutional changes.
One caveat to the presidentâs powers is the possibility of âcohabitation,â when the president is from a different political party than the majority of politicians in the parliament. In these cases, the president must choose a prime minister who will be accepted by the parliament, and the two share powers of governing more equitably.
But while the conditions are likely not there to bring about a sixth republic in France, the current crisis could lead to other institutional changes.
Indeed, Macron already tried to amend the constitution during his first term, with a plan to add proportional voting to the parliamentary elections and to reduce the number of MPs.
He tried again after the "Yellow Vests" protest, with a reform that would have made it easier for the parliament and citizens to launch a shared referendum, but the law didn't come to fruition.
Will the Fifth Republic last?
French political commentators and scholars have been trying to answer this question since the Fifth Republic was first founded, and itâs impossible to do more than make educated guesses. Since de Gaulle first wrote out its constitution, there have been 24 revisions of it, which have affected 2/3 of its articles. Subsequent changes to the republic have even increased the presidentâs clout. A 1962 referendum had the president elected by popular vote, and a 2000 referendum resulted in an alignment of the presidential and parliamentary election calendars â something that has almost always resulted in an absolute majority for the president.
So far the constitutionâs flexibility and the force of the past presidents has kept the Fifth afloat. But far left agitator and presidential candidate Jen-Luc MĂ©lenchon has been leading a march for the âsixth republicâ and Marine Le Pen talking about radically reshaping Franceâs domestic policies, thereâs no telling what might happen by the time Macron leaves office and a new President is ushered in.
Many believe that a certain regime of politics is coming to an end, of which Emmanuel Macron is the epilogue. It is both the end of a regime in the political-institutional sense â hyper-presidentialism and the weakening of counter-powers â but also the exhaustion of a certain regime of "belief" in politics, i.e., the credit we give to men and institutions. It is a symbolic crisis as much as a legal-political one.
I suspect the Fifth Republic will chug along just fine. There may be a few bits of tinkering but not much. I suspect - much like the debates for Proportional Representation in the UK, politicians of all stripes say one thing but do the opposite one in power - once someone like Marine Le Pen comes into power (she is favoured to win the next presidential elections after Macron steps aside) then I doubt she would voluntarily give up her presidential powers any more than any other politician wanting to exercise power to make policy.
At the heart of these debates of changing the Fifth Republic is the very idea of France itself as it faces changes in its society and the challenges therein. In the mind of General de Gaulle, the French presidential system was intended to reaffirm France's independence and sovereignty in the bipolar world of the Cold War. Never have both appeared so threatened.
The decline of state sovereignty is a global phenomenon at the crossroads of several simultaneous revolutions. The first is the history of capitalism, with the financialisation and globalisation of markets and the new supranational actors that are the multinationals. The second is the institutional history of Europe, with the construction of Europe, which is deconstructing the nation-states of which it is composed. The third is the history of information and communication technologies with the emergence of the GAFA [Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon] and the new authoritarian algorithmic governance that is being imposed on States and citizens. And finally there is the strategic history of Europe with the end of the Cold War and the integration of France into the Western bloc under the aegis of NATO.
Any of these would be challenging for the nation state, but all five at once is enough to make any stable democracy shudder at the foundations.

Louis Tomlinson has revealed that he failed to get a ticket for Oasisâ 2025 reunion tour over the weekend.
Tickets went on sale on Saturday (August 31) and promptly sold out at 7pm.
However, some fans who managed to reach the other side of multi-hour long queues were left frustrated to find huge price increases on tickets, due to Ticketmasterâs dynamic pricing policy.
Ticketmaster have clarified on their website previously that tickets that are âmarket-pricedâ âmay increase or decrease at any time, based on demand. This is similar to how airline tickets and hotel rooms are sold.â
Now, the former One Direction singer said he tried for tickets but could not got beyond the queue.
Speaking to Sky Sportsâ Martin Brundle on the grid at the Italian Grand Prix yesterday (September 1), when asked if he managed to bag a ticket, Tomlinson said: âI didnât, I was in the queue, but I never got a number⊠I did try, I did try.â

[ENG translation] Joker Out after performing at Sziget: This is a dream come true for us
This article was written by Katja Kaja MejaÄ and published on the 12th of August 2024 on the Njena.si website. Translated by @kurooscoffee, @chaosofsmarty and a member of JokerOutSubs, review by @weolucbasu, English proofreading by IG GBoleyn123.

The 30th edition of one of Europe's largest festivals, Sziget, is coming to an end today in the capital city of Hungary. On Thursday, the Slovenian band Joker Out also took to the main stage, impressing the gathered audience. After the concert, they gave an exclusive interview for the web page Njena.si as well.
Sziget festival, which has been attracting music lovers from all over the world for decades, was not only a venue for top-notch performances this year, but also the realisation of long-held dreams for the Slovenian band Joker Out. The Hungarian festival is one of the largest European festivals and also one of the most significant events in the music industry. With a diverse array of music for all tastes and other artistic programs that transform an island in the middle of the Danube into an island of freedom for almost a week, it creates an atmosphere which keeps everyone coming back. For Bojan, Kris, Jan, Jure, and Nace from Joker Out, who returned to the festival this year as performers, this performance undoubtedly represents the pinnacle of their career and a confirmation of their hard work and persistence.
Sharing the main stage with Kylie Minogue and Sam Smith
One of the greatest confirmations of their success is that the boys stepped onto the main festival stage at 5:30 PM on Thursday, sharing it indirectly with some of the biggest names in contemporary music, such as Halsey, Tom Odell, Kylie Minogue, Liam Gallagher, Sam Smith, Louis Tomlinson, Martin Garrix, Fred again, and others. The bandâs lead singer, Bojan CvjetiÄanin, proudly emphasises: "This is a dream come true for us. We have always viewed Sziget festival as the ultimate goal. When we were asked in an interview years ago how we would define success, we said back then that it would be the main stage at Sziget festival. I believe that at the time, in our minds, we didn't think that it would happen anytime soon. But we counted on it as a 'maybe, someday, in the future,' so this is all really crazy."
The unbelievable joy, to finally be able to perform on the stage where we watched our biggest musical idols when we were younger. The audience in front of the stage has more than exceeded our expectations and gave us excellent energy that will remain a pleasant memory.
The guitarist Kris GuĆĄtin added that even though the names performing on the main stage this year are, of course, very important in the world of music, the most important piece of information to them is who performed on stage in the same time slot as they did. Not only at this year's festival, but in previous years as well. "Because it's a more direct comparison," he explains, adding "when I was at Sziget 2018 as an attendee, I went to listen to my favourite band in the same time slot. We also found out that our friend from London, Lewis Capaldi performed in the same time slot when he first performed at Sziget. And yesterday (on Wednesday) Tom Odell, who is an outstanding musician. This is a beautiful and realistic display of our slot and what we managed to achieve."

Jan Peteh arrived at the festival already on Wednesday, because he wanted to see the shows of two performers live, otherwise the boys had to leave Budapest immediately after their show and head towards their other concert locations. "It was planned, because I wanted to see two, or rather one performer. L'Impératrice, who are currently my favourite band and Marc Rebillet, who is known because of his YouTube streams and I've got to say, I'm even more impressed than I thought I'd be and it was definitely worth it."
The boys had to set off quickly as they had new concerts waiting for them, but if they had been able to stay, they unanimously singled out a peformer they would've wished to see and hear live at this year's festival. "Liam Gallagher, for sure." Liam performed at the festival on Friday night, and is otherwise best known as the frontman of the former English rock band Oasis, with which he and his brother Noel made some of the greatest hits of the 90s. That includes the legendary song 'Wonderwall'. Kris also added that he would've liked to see today's performance of the English producer and DJ who makes music under the name 'Fred again..'. "I don't know him that well, but it would've been interesting to see him because a lot of people are into him."

A new album and a different concept of concertsÂ
The musicians have some more performances ahead, and then they're promising to release a new album in the autumn. "The album, the release of our third studio album, which will also kind of open the season of the last quarter of this year. As far as concerts go, we will focus mostly on the Balkan region. We will also do a few standalone concerts in this area to promote the album," reveals Bojan, and adds that they will go back to their beginnings a little.
"There's a more intimate atmosphere in store again, as we will choose venues that might not be as big as we could've gone for, but this album will be our first new experience in a while of playing new material that we don't know very well either, and we would like to get to know it in a circle of people that we can feel more in touch with," he explains. The Jokers will reveal more information about the album and the performances that will accompany its release in the coming weeks.

I am not the best person to answer this question, as I am currently delving deeper into my research on the group of the Enragés, particularly from a legal perspective, here https://www.tumblr.com/nesiacha/762409217481179136/jacques-rouxs-criticism-of-the-constitution-of?source=share (and also because I don't have much time). Perhaps @saintjustitude or @anotherhumaninthisworld, as well as other Tumblr users more specialized than I am on the subject, could provide better insights.
Nevertheless, I will offer my modest contribution on Claire Lacombe. The academic historian Antoine Resche has written a good biography of her, and historian Mathilde LarrĂšre has also discussed her in depth. Unfortunately, I lost my notes from Jean ClĂ©ment Martinâs excellent book La RĂ©volte brisĂ©e: Femmes dans la RĂ©volution française et lâEmpire , as well as one of the most important references on revolutionary women, Dominique Godineau.
We know that Claire Lacombe was born in 1765 and was an actress who worked in Marseille,Lyon, Toulon then living in Paris. She was one of those women, like ThĂ©roigne de MĂ©ricourt, who proposed to take up arms to fight the tyrants. What I donât understand is whether Lacombe was referring specifically to Louis XVI and La Fayette, or to other European monarchs as well (which is not impossible, as ThĂ©roigne de MĂ©ricourt, despite advocating reconciliation between the Montagnards and the Girondins, supported the idea of war). According to Mathilde LarrĂšre, these two women, alongside Pauline LĂ©on, are considered among the most well-known.
Claire Lacombe participated in the storming of the Tuileries in 1792 and received a civic crown like Louise Reine Audu and ThĂ©roigne de MĂ©ricourt. She was interested in the Jacobin Club before becoming secretary, then president, of the SociĂ©tĂ© des Citoyennes RĂ©publicaines RĂ©volutionnaires (Society of Revolutionary Republican Women). Along with other revolutionary women, she demanded the right to bear arms, something Olympe de Gouges, who wrote the DĂ©claration des droits de la femme et de la citoyenne , did not dare to ask for in the article addressing menâs right to bear arms.
Claire Lacombe grew closer to Leclerc and became a member of the political group known as the Enragés. She made several demands: the trial of Marie Antoinette, greater rigor in arresting suspects, the prosecution of the Girondins by the Revolutionary Tribunal, and the application of the Constitution. She also advocated for more social rights, as outlined in the petition of the Enragés (which would later be taken up by the Exagérés, who, unlike the Enragés, were less suspicious of delegated power and believed in wielding influence beyond the revolutionary sections).
Lacombe was first arrested in September 1793 but released the following day.The majority of the Convention, including La Montagne and what are called the exaggerated or the HĂ©bertists, fought the enragĂ©s ( especially Roux and Leclerc) during this period . Her second arrest in April 1794, alongside Leclerc and Pauline LĂ©on, lasted longer. Unlike the latter two, who were released after Thermidorâpossibly due to their connections with Tallien (one of the few good actions of Tallien, it should be noted)âLacombe was not released until August 1795, which is rather strange. Could it be that she didnât have the right connections to secure her release? Or perhaps, out of disgust for certain Thermidorians, she refused help? Or was she simply forgotten?
In any case, there is no further trace of her political activism. She went to Nantes to resume acting before returning to Paris, where she fell into debt. We donât even know the date of her death (something she shares with the revolutionary Marie Anne Babeuf). It seems she is among those revolutionaries who have been too forgotten, as we do not know what became of her.
Sources: Antoine Resche Mathilde LarrĂšre
Feel free to check out, as I mentioned, Dominique Godineauâs book Citoyennes tricoteuses, which is very interesting, as well as Jean ClĂ©ment Martinâs book that Iâve mentioned.

met late summer 2022 at one of martin's gigs in Ibiza - lando was there on vacation with max f, ollie etc. the video going around of them at fisher's gig was a couple of days after martin's.
sept 2022 monza gp - martin was at the race even though he wasn't playing and was with mclaren - they posted pics of him and daniel in their hospitality. after the race, lando posted pics of them him & martin leaving in a heli - he called martin his uber driver đ€Ł. lando stayed in amsterdam for a few days. both of them posted videos of them on martin's boat on the canals with martin's friend jurrian. local gossip sites mentioned they'd been seen in restaurants with friends. in this time martin bought lando his decks. lando posted pics of himself with them on the plane back to the uk and martin said in an interview a few months later that he had bought them as a gift for lando.
oct 2022 - hang out after the mexico gp - there are clips on tiktok of them at a club.
dec 2022 dubai - martin was playing there on 30th dec, turned up a few days early and hung out with lando. martin posted pics of them on his insta with some masks & there was a video of them playing padel with martin k and someone else. lando's friends all posted from the vip section at martin's gig.
jan 2023 - following martin's gig in thailand, he and louis met up with lando & martin k and they all flew to finland for several days - lots of pics and videos - then on to ibiza for a few more days - martin has a home there and his parents & sister spend a lot of time there and were with them - martin posted a pic of himself with his family and also there were videos of lando and both martins on a hike. martin then flew to nice the same day lando went back to monaco - he posted a pic of himself the next day in nice getting a haircut.
may 2023 miami gp - martin was playing at the miami race. that's where the nipple pinch pics come from & also this gem https://www.tumblr.com/alexi-01/716928290612559872/stop-this-is-so-cute-look-at-martijns-face?source=share
june 2023 - arrive early together in nyc and hang out ahead of lando's press stuff. martin's parents and sister were also with them - there's a pic of them with lando & martin in a japanese tea house. lando stays through to martin's gig and arrives late for thursday media day in canada. martin shows up to play after the gp in canada. he and lando were out together that evening in montreal - a dj in the bar they were in took pics with them both. next day lando posts a pic of video of him, martin & louis on a hotel balcony.
july 2023 - max v & lando go to tomorrowland after the spa gp. max is in vip with his family, lando is up on stage with martin trying but failing to hide behind some speakers. videos of them at the afterpary. lando then goes to amsterdam for a couple of days before he has to be back in spa - posted a pic of the view from martin's place & a pic leaked of them playing pool.
august 2023 - after being on vacation with his family lando goes to ibiza. missed all his friends who had been there all summer, stays with martin's childhood friends incl jurrian from the amsterdam boat. pics of them out celebrating ward and jurrian's bdays and the afterparty of martin's show. lando then flies with martin to his shows in bratislava and then marseille - was pictured in bratislava plus martin posted a story with him in and lando let the marseille detail out in a ziggo interview at the amsterdam gp.
sept 2023 - zandvoort gp martin hanging with lando's dad on the grid. after the race there's a video of the two of them getting out of a van at amsterdam airport and boarding max v's plane which flew to monaco.
oct 2023 - hung out after the mexico gp after lando had had dinner with carlos. i follow a friend of lando & max v's who lives in mexico city who now has a locked account so the pics aren't public but he posted pics of both of them and martin started following him. swedish house mafia guys were also there (assumption carlos may have been there too as even though there were no pics the guy started following him as well though carlos didn't follow back)
nov 2023 - that hug at the vegas gp. local papers reported lando was also in the club with martin and max v but there are no pics and as he was probably still in some pain after his crash it's likely they confused thierry v with lando.
dec 2023 - ski trip with lando's friends. martin flew directly back from gigs in singapore and malaysia to join up with them.
to be continued...
and that's just the stuff we know about lol. bffs of w/e else, anyone's guess at this point, but they really did become very close very quickly.
Anon, I am giving you a big ole fat kiss on the forehead. God bless you for this breakdown â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
So much stuff happens throughout the season that I routinely forget tiny details (especially ones you've listed here like the family dinner in New York). To see them all spelled out here is đđ€

Charles-Henri Sanson is pretty famous.. how about his siblings? The internet doesn't provide much, what can you say about them? đ
If you speak or read French, it is possible to get some info on them by reading Jacques Delarue, or the National Archives.
Now, what I found about the forth generation sibblings can be compiled in the two dictionaries written by Michel Demorest, namely "Dictionnaire historique et anecdotique des bourreaux" and his later one "Dictionaire généalogique des familles de bourreau" (of which I only had time to make very rough notes) as well as the description of the Sanson house, which was done to split the fortune amongst the many heirs of Charles-Jean-Baptiste Sanson.
So,
Madeleine-Claude-Gabrielle Sanson, was born in around the winter 1738 (reconstituted given the birth date of her younger brother and her father's age at time of mariage). She was married off in January 1754 to Pierre HĂ©risson, ten years her senior, executioner of Melun, around age 16. Of the mariage, five daughters would be born. She died before August 1779. Her eldest daughter, Marie-Madeleine-GeneviĂšve, married Louis-Cyr-Charlemagne Sanson, her own uncle. She's Charles-Henry's only full-blood sibbling.
Louis Charles Martin Sanson, born in 1744, executioner of Tour. He married Marie Victoire Collet de Charmoy in 1787, who turned out to be a quite bloodthirsty and violent woman. From the marriage would resulta son, Louis-Victor. During the Revolution, he became the protégé of Sénard, and was influential in fanatic circles. He also was poltically active, and attempted to become member of the Surveillance Comity, of which he was thankfully banned from doing so, although he was in position for a short while during the Terror, and arranged the results to his financial benefits. He was also apperently neglectful and corrupt at his actual job. He would publically strip the condemned, to their shifts, and would publically strip their corpses. He eventually calmed down after being tried for his corruption. He became executioner of Dijon after wards, job he hated because of the life-threatening ostracism he was subject to, so he played sick.
Nicolas-Charles-Gabriel Sanson II: Born 1745. He was executioner of Versailles from 1765 to 1778, then 1779 he became torturer until the abolition of his office. He then became executioner of Blois, were in 1795 he married the widow Anne François, of unknown surname. Appearently, his stint as a torturer caused him to become a hardcore alcoholic. He switched to Montpellier, 1800, age 55, where he died from an alcohol poisonning too many.
Ălisabeth Sanson: Born around 1747, married Pierre François Verdier at age 18.
Louis-Cyr-Charlemagne Sanson: Born 1748, and died in 1794, age 46 years old. In 1760, he became assistant to his older brother Charles-Henry, age 12. He became executioner of Provins 1768, age twenty. He left the post in 1788 to become executioner of Versailles. In 1779, year of his father's death, and actually a bit after, he married his own niece Marie-Madeleine-GeneviĂšve HĂ©risson. The couple would have children, none of whom would survive past infancy. During the French Revolution, he became an activist for his profession and supported his son's career after he quit the executioner thing to work as a locksmith. The 10th of August 1792, he was arrested on charges of royalism, and released two days before the massacres of September. That same year, he married Marie Fare Gendron, after she had fallen pregnant with his child, a boy who would survive to adulthood. His death appearently caused a bureaucratic hellscape for the judicial authorities. His widow would come to live with Charles-Henry.
Marie-JosĂšphe Sanson : Born 1752, died in 1819 or 1813, depending on sources. She married her first cousin Jean Louis Sanson around 1773, at the age of around 22, while he was around was around 24. They had two children, with a daughter that would survive into adulthood. After her husband's disgrace from office and premature death, she would succeed in escaping infamy to become a "ouvriĂšre en linge" after the Revolution. She was one of the rare members of an executioner family to successfully integrate society.
Pierre Charles Sanson: Born in 1753. He became assistant to his older brother, officially so in 1792, but he became sub-lieutenant of the Cannonier in 1794, and Master Carpenter. He treated patients, and that's what we know of him.
There were other sibblings, this ask took me long enough. I'll get you another one if you want to.

easy company registration cards part 2
part 1
included in this compilation under the cut are the registration cards of 13 more easy company veterans featured in band of brothers (2001). all are taken from publicly available draft records held in online databases and collected by me, and contain details like the registrant's serial number, physical attributes, date and place of birth, phone number, residential and mailing addresses, place of employment and nominated next of kin, as well as their handwriting sample and signature. like or reblog if you use or save.
a note about draft registration
during the second world war, the united states selective service system conducted a total of six draft registrations, the records of which are held collectively in two groupings at the national personnel records centre in st. louis, missouri. members of easy company were drafted in all but one of these registrations from october 1940 through to december 1942. the six registrations are as follows:
16 october 1940: males aged 21 to 35 "within the continental united states". winters, nixon, welsh, toye, perconte and liebgott were among those registered on this date.
1 july 1941: males "who had reached 21 since the first registration". lipton and speirs were registered on this date.
16 february 1942: between the ages of 20 and 45 "who had not previously registered". roe, bull, malarkey and luz, among others, were registered on this date.
27 april 1942: between the ages of 46 to 65 "not eligible for military service". no known easy company members were registered on this date.
30 june 1942: between the ages of 18 to 20. talbert, webster, grant, guarnere, babe, shifty, skip and christenson, among others, were registered on this date.
10-31 december 1942: "those who reached the age of 18 after 12 november 1942". penkala, who turned 18 in august 1942 three months before the cutoff, was nonetheless among those registered in this period.
if you have a family member or ancestor who served in a branch of the us armed forces during either the first or second world war, chances are that you can find their registration card on databases like ancestry.com and familysearch.org.
