Opening on Saturday, March 11th, 2023 at Harman Projects in New York City is artist Louis "Masai" Michel's solo exhibition, "The Message."

For the past three years, artist Masai has been living on the south-eastern coastline of Margate, England. His proximity to the coast has informed the environmentally conscious artist's practice, resulting in a new body of work exploring our relationship with plastic items that often end up as trash in the sea.

The exhibition incorporates several distinct series' of artwork including a group of paintings of marine species that have been directly affected by ocean plastics, several text-based artworks bringing attention to specific types of plastics that often make their way into sea, and cyanotype prints of beach-found seaweed that have been hand embellished with paintings of fishing net.

Five Artist Report and How They Influenced/Inspired My Work

For my final project topic, I have decided to choose ‘Nature’ in order to expand on my research and graphic media development as this topic caught my attention the most for both contextual and graphic media work. This is due to the fact that climate change and animal cruelty are one of the most pressing issues in society over the past decade.

On this particular blog post I will be discussing the visual works of five creatives whose work is relevant to and has inspired my final graphic media creation, as well as why they are of interest to my project. Starting with Vanessa Barragao and Courtney Mattison, who are both artists that create work that addresses the pollution of the ocean. The reason why I chose these two artists is because two of my final pieces addresses ocean pollution and they use similar techniques in their work as me to show before and after the damages of humanity.

Portuguese artist Vanessa Barragao creates large scaled textiles rug tapestries and wall hangings focussing on the ocean pollution which is caused by the textile industries. Each piece she has designed is handmade and was created by using discarded textile waste. One of her work in particular, named the Coral Garden portrays the effects of coral bleaching caused global warming, which eventually damages and completely kills the coral reef.

Courtney Mattison, who is an artist from America creates ceramic sculptures which also ‘explores the diversity of coral reefs, but also how many of these once-vibrant ecosystems are now dying’. She explains her work with these powerful words, “Toward the edges and tail of the swirling constellation corals sicken and bleach, exposing their sterile white skeletons—a specter of what could be lost from climate change.” Global warming/Climate Change is a regular increase in the temperature of earth’s atmosphere which is ‘generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants’, which is produced by man-made creations and activities such as fossil fuel burning.

Marie Antuanelle is an artist from Australia who also address ocean pollution through her work. However, the difference between her work and the previous artists mentioned above is that, Antuanelle only produces work which captures the beauty of the oceans, not only does she paint beautiful oceans, but she also incorporates real nature objects such as gemstones and seashells in her work. Through her undeniably eye-catching paintings she wants the audience/viewers to understand the “importance of marine conservation and how precious natural beauty is to humanity” and that by “erasing any traces of human presence to impart the feeling of a completely free and pure world”. I chose her as another artist who has influenced and inspired my final project was because of her concept of creating vibrant and human free paintings of nature to show the maximum capacity of the beauty of our world. I incorporated this and received the idea mainly from her which is reflected in my before pollution and damage caused by humans art pieces.

The next artist whose work is of relevance to my work is a street artist from the UK named Louis Masai Michel. He is well known for creating such beautiful murals of endangered animals. Masai says that “these murals are aimed at getting viewers to consider the animals’ plight, so that they are moved to take action that might just help to save them.” He created a series of images which consisted of various endangered “animals being stitched together by a bee carrying a needle and thread.  In this way, I have allowed my bees to become a metaphor to encourage people to join in with stitching the planet together – and to stop unstitching it. His amazing work shows us how important it is to save endangered animals from extinction before we run out of time.  Similar to street artist Masai is South African street artist Sonny, who creates large murals of endangered animals. His work is ‘an exploration of the precarious balance between mankind and the animal kingdom.’ He portrays this by creating paintings of endangered animals with their faces half stripped down and decorated with patterns of the tribes local to each animals origin, as well as highlighting certain body parts in gold which are sold by poachers.

Both these street artists inspired me to create two pieces for my final graphic media project which involved an endangered species and the results/use of the animal’s skin just for human pleasure and greed.

A London Street Artist Paints Swarms of Bees on Urban Walls to Raise Awareness of Colony Collapse Disorder

Street artist Louis Masai Michel is on a one-man mission to raise awareness of the plight of the humble honey bee through his Save the Bees mural project . The murals began shortly after Michel returned from a trip to South Africa where he was painting endagered animals, when he began to learn about about bees and the grave implications of colony collapse disorder. He immediately set out to paint a series of murals incorporating bees on walls around London in May of last year, but the endeavor proved wildly popular and has since spread to Bristol, Devon, Glastonbury, Croatia, New York, Miami, and New Orleans.       Michel is currently taking a break from bees to open a show of unrelated artwork at Lollipop Gallery later next month, but plans are in the making for a phase two sometime next year.
